After a year of renovations, wunderkind internet influencer Emma Chamberlain has shared pictures of her LA home with the public, showcasing a style that fits her authentic social media presence.

“I work from home, so I wanted to create something completely personal and comfortable,” the 21-year-old told Architectural Digest. “I brought in references from many decades and design eras, and I tried to meld them into something that feels not only cohesive but new. It wasn’t about following the rules or sticking to one aesthetic. I tried to approach it all with a lightheartedness and an open mind.”

The process began when Chamberlain bought the five-bedroom, seven-bathroom estate in June 2021 for $4.3 million. The 4,440-square-foot home was built in 1955 and had plenty of existing charm with high, open beam ceilings and cozy fireplaces. She then enlisted the design talents of Ashley Drost and Marie Trohman of Proem Studio to help her put her own spin on the space.

“It almost felt like a summer camp, so we leaned into that mood. We described it as Wet Hot American Summer meets Troop Beverly Hills. Emma said, ‘I love that idea, but I have no clue what you’re talking about,’ ” an amused Drost recalls.

Chamberlain also turned to the world wide web to help her settle on a vision (only natural for someone with more than 11.8 million followers on YouTube alone). “I’m a mood board type of girl. I scoured every corner on the internet, every weird, deep hole on Pinterest,” she says. “I find inspiration for the home everywhere, the same as fashion. It’s all one in my mind.”

The home’s color palette is muted and inviting. While the backdrop of the interior features lots of white and natural wood, the kitchen hosts a wash of calming green tones, and the bathroom has playful blue tiles splashed across the wall and floor. Drost and Trohman incorporated natural textures and materials like swaths of raw copper, cork ceiling treatments, and braided banana tree bark as wallpaper.

Quirky accents feel right at home for Chamberlain, who was once named “the funniest person on YouTube” by the New York Times. Among other things, the dining room chandelier is composed of a pair of oversized metal chains that end in glowing orbs, and there’s a custom cat bed carved out of a vintage TV console. All throughout the renovation process, the young starlet has been hard at work on her popular “Anything Goes” podcast, building her Chamberlain Coffee enterprise, and collaborating with high-profile fashion houses like Louis Vuitton and Cartier to promote her brand.

Ultimately, “the most talked-about teen influencer in the world” (according to The Atlantic) isn’t concerned about whether her followers or others dig her residential style. As she puts it, “I don’t really care if people don’t like it. I’m the one who lives here, so I have to love it. And I do.”

The idea of housing homeless people in structures the size of sheds is controversial for a number of reasons. In May 2021, Lehrer Architects got a lot of attention when they completed Alexandria Park Tiny Home Village in the North Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles, a community of 103 micro-homes capable of housing up to 200 people in 8-foot-wide cabins.

Some find the 64-square-foot size and seeming flimsiness of such tiny houses inhumane, while others believe they’re an important stepping stone to getting people off the street permanently. The architects feel that Alexandria Park Tiny Home Village was always meant to be transitional, giving occupants a sense of security and ownership as well as access to necessary services and facilities until they can move on to more stable housing. They expanded upon that idea in their latest project, creating larger permanent homes for disabled and formerly homeless veterans.

The firm certainly has the experience to back up its ideas. They’ve been creating shelters for vulnerable populations for over 20 years. Six years ago, they partnered with nonprofit developer Restore Neighborhoods Los Angeles and community bank Genesis LA to create a variety of housing prototypes that could help ease the homelessness and housing affordability crises in California. These projects are all rooted in the idea that everyone deserves dignity and a sense of community.

Located in the South Los Angeles community of the same name (just south of Watts and northwest of Compton), Willowbrook Apartments is a seven-unit complex occupying an awkwardly shaped, long-vacant plot of land close to public transit and a community church. Each unit is 300 square feet and includes a private bathroom, kitchenette, and universal design features for accessibility.

Galley-style kitchens and plentiful natural light create a feeling of expansiveness. The units are mirrored back-to-back to save space, and they’re all anchored to a communal outdoor space. A taller structure offers a community meeting room, storage space, and offices to form a “coherent urban campus, even on a small scale.”

The colors are acid-bright, with neon yellow paths winding around small stone patios and drought-tolerant landscaping. The architects wanted it all to feel very California: cheerful, sunny, and fresh. “Each bend and turn in the path provides real or implied mindful pause from the street to the front door, enhancing the separation from the public realm to the private,” the team explains. “This is something that is meaningful and critical for all residents, but even more so for those that have previously been unhoused.”

The complex will serve as a model for similar developments. The team chooses urban infill lots that are considered less than ideal by most developers, inserting either individual affordable starter homes costing $200,000, 5-bedroom duplexes for troubled teens, or small communities for vulnerable populations, like Alexandria Park Tiny Home Village and Willowbrook Apartments. The projects aim to be livable, reproducible, and anything but depressing.

“I hope this project captures the imagination of the culture, showing how such housing can actively enhance its neighborhood, no matter where the residents lived previously,” says Michael Lehrer, founder and president of Lehrer Architects. “This is critical to destigmatize these types of housing projects, and to destigmatize the people who live there, demonstrating the true beauty of complete neighborhoods that take care of all residents.”

The post Lehrer Architects Create Cheerful Permanent Housing for LA’s Disabled Vets first appeared on Dornob.

Right after buying a house, many new homeowners spend months on a mad dash to complete crucial interior renovations like paint, flooring, appliances, and kitchen counters. The yard is often something you imagine you’ll get to “later,” only to be left a scrubby mix of dry grass, weeds, and old pavers for years on end. But once you give it some TLC, you’ll realize it should have been a higher priority all along.

Whether your home needs some curb appeal or you just want to level up your game, you’re going to need some inspiration, and landscape architect Sarita Jaccard has that in spades.

Born in Argentina, Jaccard got a degree in environmental studies from New York University while also studying graphic design, a potent combination of skills that led her to where she is today. She moved to Los Angeles and worked for LA landscape artist Art Luna in 2017, starting her own office two years later. Her time with Luna gave her experience transforming some of LA’s most beautiful high-end properties, including the West Adams home of artist Henry Taylor and the grounds of a Paul R. Williams house in Hollywood.

Jaccard’s projects reveal a keen eye for exactly the right plants and design elements to complement the exterior of a client’s home. Each one has a particular mood. “Edgecliffe,” for instance, has the feel of a modernized cottage garden, with café tables tucked among towering wildflowers adjacent to textural brick facades. “West Adams” accents a Spanish-style home with banana plants, spiraling agave rosettes, trumpet flowers, and striped hammocks. As a certified California native plant landscaper, Jaccard always incorporates appropriate species for the local climate, especially for friendly pollinators.

Other projects by Jaccard are every bit as mesmerizing. “Sunkist” celebrates the expansiveness of the Joshua Tree landscape. Squares of wooden decking interspersed with circular hot tubs and tables slices through the desert floor, accented by drought-resistant native plants. “Oneonta” translates similar motifs to a wholly different landscape, a forested plot occupied by a stark black modern cabin. Here, the hardscape elements contrast with an abundance of lush dark greenery in pleasing spikes and cascades.

Sometimes, Jaccard manages to convince the clients to alter the exterior of their home to suit their collective vision for the landscape design. That was the case with a recent project in Los Angeles, which started with “a lot of broken brick and half-dead grass.” The clients wanted a kid-friendly garden full of drought-tolerant plants that would enhance their view of the surrounding Mount Washington hills. Jaccard convinced them to paint their home black as a dramatic backdrop, then oriented everything from the entrance walkway to the furniture toward the view.

Swaths of small pebbles provide relatively soft yet xeriscape-friendly surfaces throughout the front and rear yards alongside redwood decks, custom-made furniture by Blue Pocket Studio, and pockets of native plants. But the best part is the sunken cedar hot tub, which creates the illusion of an infinity edge and reflects an adjacent oak tree.

A 42-acre site along the LA River is supposed to become the new “crown jewel” of Los Angeles, transformed into a beautiful park full of trails, wetlands, wildlife habitat, and amenities. But as it turns out, the Taylor Yard G2 River Park Project might be a little more than the city bargained for. What was originally supposed to be a $252 million project when first announced in 2016 has ballooned in cost to the eye-watering figure of $1.06 billion. So what in the world has made the cost rise into the stratosphere?

Located on the border of Cypress Park and Glassell Park just north of downtown Los Angeles, the historic former rail yard was identified as an ideal opportunity for both river restoration and new public green space. It’s the largest undeveloped parcel on the river and also happens to be a strategic location where the riverbank could be naturalized, even with the rest of the concrete channel remaining as it is today. The parcel is part of the larger 250-acre Taylor Yard, currently owned by Union Pacific Railroad.

Mayor Eric Garcetti oversaw the purchase of the property for $60 million after the project was unanimously approved by the Los Angeles City Council. Plans for the parcel include one mile of direct riverfront access with views of the Griffith Observatory, downtown, and the iconic Hollywood sign. It will also unite the surrounding Rio de Los Angeles State Park and the state-owned G1 parcel, forming 100 acres of open space along the LA River.

“We’ve always considered G2 to be the crown jewel in our vision to revitalize the L.A. River, and that’s why I have been committed to fighting for the resources to finally return this land to the people of Los Angeles and the wildlife that call it home,” Mayor Garcetti said in a press release. “We got it done, and now this vast site can transform how Angelenos connect with the natural world — because it will allow for habitat restoration, and open more than a mile of direct access to the river for local communities that have been cut off from it for too long.”

The massive cost increase of the Taylor Yard G2 River Project mostly comes down to a single word: contamination. An updated study by the Bureau of Engineering found that cleaning and removing contaminated soil will cost about $231 million alone, in addition to the cost of the parcel itself, the infrastructure, and the expected operating costs of at least $6 million per year. The city will have to work with California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control to remediate the site. The good news for locals looking forward to the park’s completion is that it’s almost certainly still moving forward, despite the price tag.

Last month, a major milestone in the plan was achieved as the Taylor Yard Pedestrian Bridge was completed. Designed by SPF:architects, the bright orange bridge connects an area north of Dodger Stadium known as Elysian Valley to the neighboring Cypress Park district. It features a 400-foot box-trussed span referencing the area’s industrial heritage. Two cantilevered central viewing platforms form a “handshake” meant to symbolize peace between two neighborhoods once known for public fights and gang violence.

The post The Cost of LA’s “Crown Jewel” River Park Skyrockets to $1 Billion first appeared on Dornob.

Although her onstage work is all fireworks and roar, a peek at singer Katy Perry’s Beverly Hills mansion shows she enjoys a decidedly quieter atmosphere in her down time. The California Gurl recently listed her one-plus acre estate in the well-guarded celebrity neighborhood on Hidden Valley Road for $19.5 million, giving fans a never-before-seen glimpse into her personal style.

According to the listing by Hilton & Hyland, the property entrance starts with an “incredible ¼-mile drive with massive gates” that leads up to the ivy-covered home “surrounded by a forest of parkland and nature elements.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Simple, open living room in Katy Perry's on-sale Beverly Hills mansion, complete with a calming lilac couch.
The grounds include an expansive lawn shaded by mature trees, one of which houses the treehouse of every child’s dreams. In the back is an infinity-edge pool and spa that appears to spill over the bordering hillside. The listing also boasts direct access from within the neighborhood to both private hiking trails and Franklin Canyon trails. There’s also “parking for dozens of cars [and] on-site security,” a definite draw for all the Hollywood parties the next celebrity owner is sure to throw.

Decorated in a modern Hollywood Regency aesthetic, the 1959 home is classy, understated, and serene in its furnishings and colors. The front entryway is flooded with natural sunbeams thanks to a large overhead skylight. Various shades of purple grace the insides of Perry’s 5,427-square-foot dwelling, appearing in a lilac sectional in the step-down living room and in regal plum dining chairs. In the private spaces, restful blue reigns supreme. The master suite, with its marble bath, double closets, and garden terrace, is awash in steely blue, while the library walls are covered in a brooding navy.

The kitchen is classic with its ivory cabinets and light marble countertops. Geometric pendant lighting keeps the vibe fresh and on-trend. An outdoor eating area allows for alfresco dining while a covered patio provides protection from the elements. And quirky architectural details like a stained-glass eye in the middle of a door surprise throughout.

With three fireplaces, four additional bedrooms, six total bathrooms, and a media room on the lower level, the estate is the height of luxury and tranquility. And that’s not to mention the sky-lit gym, complete with cold plunge and shower.

The American Idol judge sold off a smaller 4,410-square-foot house down the street just last year for $7.5 million. That four-bedroom, five-bathroom acted as her guest house and took seven months to sell.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Huge modern gym space attached to Katy Perry's up-for-grabs Beverly Hills home.
Having only bought the Beverly Hills home in 2017 for $18 million, 37-year-old Perry stands to earn a nice little sum if she gets the full $19.5 million asking price. She, fiancé Orlando Bloom, and their daughter Daisy relocated to Montecito in October 2020, buying a 7,167-square-foot property on 8.9 acres right next to her hometown of Santa Barbara. The couple got a good deal on the 1934, 6-bedroom, 12-bath home, which was originally listed for just $16.25 million.

While the family will be leaving behind fellow A-listers like Jennifer Lawrence, Nicole Kidman, and Adele on Hidden Valley Road, Perry’s daughter will still grow up rubbing elbows with plenty of celebrity neighbors including Oprah, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Rob Lowe, and Ariana Grande.

The post Katy Perry is Giving Up Her L.A.

Tiny homes don’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon, especially since designers and architects are constantly finding new ways to make them more sustainable and eco-friendly. But tiny homes can also be whimsical wonders. Just take this theatrical ode to kitsch and Hollywood glamor built by artist Rachel Negrete Thorson and her husband Adrien for example.

Situated in the backyard of the couple’s LA home, this wee work of art may not be the pair’s primary residence, but through its doors one can find all the amenities of home, tucked away in a cute corner that’s brimming with personality both inside and out.

The tiny home itself has an interesting past that gave the LA couple the inspiration for the project. Dating back to the 1800s, it’s believed to have had its own starring role in the bright lights of Hollywood as a prop in many TV shows and movies, including The Wizard of Oz. Traditionally known as a “vardo,” (a word deriving from the Romani word “vurdon,” meaning cart), wagons like these were used as mobile homes by the Roma people while traveling. These wagons were historically full of colorful and ornate details, much like the current iteration in the Thorsons’ backyard.

While the history and Hollywood glamor surrounding this tiny home are definitely big parts of its appeal, it was Rachel’s devotion to capturing its whimsical side that really inspired her to revamp the wagon and preserve it as an “important piece of history” that could be shared with others. The tiny home is currently listed on Airbnb for those who want to experience the magic for themselves.

Though the wagon itself is only 84 square feet, it’s still packed with modern conveniences like a full-size bed and mini-fridge —though guests do have to access what Rachel dubs the “water closet” through a connecting building that’s attached to the wagon via an outer stone pathway. Still, this does little to diminish the effect, as the atmosphere outside the wagon is just as colorful and delightful as its eclectic interiors, complete with verdant greenery, comfy hammocks, and even a hot tub.

With retro touches like hand-curated mosaic tiles reclaimed from a local tile manufacturer, a riot of patterns, colors, and textures throughout, and boho beauty galore, the Thorsons have created a real wonderland in their own corner of La La Land. Playfully dubbed “Vardolandia” by the creative couple, this wagon certainly has its place in Hollywood history and will continue to delight those lucky enough to snag a stay in its curated confines. As Rachel says, it’s a place “to remember what [it] feels like to let your imagination run free” – a bit of Oz tucked away in modern-day Los Angeles.

The post This Vintage Wagon-Turned-Tiny Home Brings the Magic of Oz to LA first appeared on Dornob.

The 105,000-square-foot property overlooking the Los Angeles area has a starting bid of $295 million, a price tag that would far surpass the current record of $238 million paid by billionaire hedge fund baron Ken Griffin for his New York penthouse in 2019.

Built over the past 10 years by developer Nile Niami and his company Crestlloyd, The One turned out to be more than he could handle, as he ended up losing the property to Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2021 after incurring more than $180 million in debt.

His loss means a gain for the next space-hungry billionaire, especially as the Bel Air property has previously been valued up to $500 million. The scale is hard to fathom. The 5,500-square-foot master bedroom alone is larger than the majority of Americans’ entire houses. The rest of the mansion encompasses 20 more bedrooms, 42 full bathrooms, and seven half baths. And with many of the rooms featuring towering 26-foot ceilings, the house really lives up to its grandiose name.

“The One earns its moniker because a home of this size and magnitude simply can never be built again due to anti-mansion-ization laws that were passed in Los Angeles during The One’s construction,” says one of the co-listing agents Branden Williams of The Beverly Hills Estates. “To have 3.8 acres at the top of Bel Air with unobstructed 360-degree views from every single room is unparalleled.”

As would be expected in a home twice the size of the White House, The One includes every imaginable amenity, making it more like a private resort than a home. There are five indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a channel of water bordering three sides of the home. The exterior also features a 10,000-square-foot deck, a golf putting green course, and a 400-foot outdoor running track.

Inside, some of the space is devoted to a wellness center with an obligatory juice bar, a games rooms, a four-lane bowling alley, a 40-seat movie theater, a full-size hair salon and spa, 10 indoor and outdoor bars, and even a massive nightclub. The property also boasts a tennis court, a 10,000-bottle wine cellar, and a 30-car garage with two car-display turntables. It also includes an events space/charity pavilion, perfect for hosting the “world’s top philanthropists for charity events without ever leaving [the] estate,” according to Williams.

“Comfort is an invaluable resource, so purchasing a property with virtually every amenity available is impossible to quantify since it has never been done before,” says co-listing agent Aaron Kirman of Compass. “Supply and demand helps determine something’s value and this is one of one. The supply couldn’t be more limited.”

Calling the super high-end estate “the first & last of its kind,” Kirman says he expects the bidding to get competitive.

Southern California is known for its bounty of beautiful Spanish-style homes with red terracotta roofs, stucco walls, black wrought iron details, and expansive archways. Many were built in the 1920s and 30s as the new world of filmmaking spurred a boom in the famously mild-weathered region. Exuding the glamor of Old Hollywood, these classic homes tend to have the sort of complex interior layouts that were popular at the time, and plenty of dark wood interior finishes.

Los Angeles-born film producer Grace Morton grew up admiring those homes and always wanted to live in one. But her personal aesthetic doesn’t exactly dovetail with the dark, serious tone they can have inside. Shopping for a new residence with her fiancé, fellow film producer Matthew Budman, Morton envisioned something much brighter and more cheerful to serve as the backdrop for her colorful, eclectic decor.

“I always loved the soulful vibe and sense of history in Spanish-style homes,” Morton told Architectural Digest. “I was definitely not looking for new construction or anything aggressively modern. But Matt and I are both young, and we wanted something more attuned to our energy and lifestyle. So we decided to lean into those contradictory impulses and accentuate the contrast.”

Morton found just the right starting point in a 1927 home in Beverly Hills, and brought in designer Billy Cotton to transform it into the adventurous and playful abode she dreamed of. To create a clean canvas that would open the spaces visually, Cotton recommended painting all the dark wood ceilings and beams white. Yves Saint Laurent’s home in Marrakech, Morocco and Villa Borsani near Milan, Italy served as the two biggest sources of style inspiration as Morton and Cotton chose furnishings and accents, filling each room with interesting elements in the proper proportions.

In the living room, a wall of bookcases was replaced with a built-in plaster banquette covered in blue and white cushions. Low-slung vintage Mario Bellini furniture in yellow velvet and chairs by Italian designers Tito Agnoli and Gio Ponti are balanced by a Royére-inspired chandelier, neon art by Tracey Emin, and a painting by Laura Owens.

The cozy family room adjourns into a dramatic bar clad in indigo blue seagrass wall covering by Élitis. Leopard-print carpet, Italian bamboo chairs in vintage floral prints, and midcentury Italian bar tiles with a Greek key motif are piled atop one another in the small space – a bold move that fits Morton’s more-is-more philosophy.

The breakfast room feels restrained in comparison with its curving banquette seating and fun wallpaper by artist Alvaro Barrington. In the primary bedroom, however, the vibe was kept more minimalist and relaxing, with the only pop of pattern coming from floral-patterned sheets by D. Porthault.

Some readers may cringe at the thought of painting over original woodwork, but others will appreciate how much more airy and updated the spaces feel as a result. Everything is customized to Morton’s personal tastes, but her Italian and Moroccan visual influences complement the style of the Spanish-style home instead of working against it. The result feels like a natural update, respectful of the home’s history while conveying a little bit of the owner’s quirky sensibilities.

The post Old Hollywood Gets an Eclectic Modern Makeover in This Updated LA Home first appeared on Dornob.

Rapper and entrepreneur Kanye West has reportedly purchased one of the only private residences in the U.S. designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Sold for $57.3 million, the minimalist concrete home may not look like much from the outside, occupying the full square footage of its compact lot between two more conventional-looking neighbors. But, as former owner and financier Richard Sachs told The Wall Street Journal, “This is not just a house. This is like a Picasso Cubist painting, very important and very rare.”

Vaguely Brutalist in style, the three-story home features views of the Pacific Ocean from every level, and even doubled as an art gallery to exhibit Sach’s contemporary art collection. Its roughly 4,000 square feet of interior space contains three bedrooms on the lower level, a kitchen and living room on the middle level, and a master bedroom on the upper level. In addition, 1500 square feet of outdoor decks allow sunbathers a vantage point from which to view dolphins, seals, and whales.

Sachs bought the land in 2003 and commissioned Ando to design the home, which was built in collaboration with local architecture firm Marmol Radziner. Made with 1,200 tons of concrete, 200 tons of steel reinforcement, and 12 pylons drilled more than 60 feet into the sand, the residence is a prime example of Ando’s iconic style. The home was completed in 2013 after a decade of work, and Sachs says he’s only letting it go because he spends too much time on the East Coast.

Japan’s most famous architect, the self-taught Ando is known for his mastery of concrete and for rooting each of his works in a foundational ideology he calls “pure geometry.” As seen in such works as his Church of Light in Osaka (1989) and The Oval at Benesse Art Museum in Naoshima (1995), this philosophy results in spaces that make daylight, air, and views of the landscape as important as the structures themselves.

Kanye West first became enamored with Ando’s designs after a 2018 visit to Naoshima, the “art island” in Japan’s Seto Inland Sea that hosts Ando’s Benesse House Museum and sculptures by James Turrell. In 2020, West told GQ that he wanted to build a home “where every room is a Turrell,” so it’s no surprise that he fell for a home with a similar vibe.

His new Malibu beach house was initially listed for $75 million and purchased in an off-market deal, so real estate images of the interiors aren’t publicly available. If the museum-like Axel Vervoordt-designed Los Angeles home West spent $20 million renovating with his former wife Kim Kardashian is any indication, they’re probably minimalist to the extreme, soon to become a backdrop for a handful of painstakingly curated objects (i.e. almost nothing at all).

Reportedly worth $6.6 billion, Kanye West also owns a Brutalist-inspired condo in Calabasas, two minimalist condos in a New York City building, a 300-acre California plot that temporarily hosted some experimental domes, and an enormous Wyoming ranch near the picturesque town of Cody, about 50 miles from the eastern edge of Yellowstone National Park.

The post Kanye West Just Bought a $57.3 Million Minimalist Malibu Villa by Tadao Ando first appeared on Dornob.

The dynamic MAD Architects have recently shared that they are Hollywood-bound, unveiling a proposal for a bright new “Star” in the heart of Tinseltown, USA. The proposed project is a high-rise unlike any other, a distinct and uniquely-shaped office tower that draws inspiration from other Hollywood landmarks like the Griffith Observatory, the Capitol Records Building, and the Hollywood Bowl.

This will be MAD’s second US project to date, the first being the “Gardenhouse” in Beverly Hills. A combined residential/commercial space, that project is the perfect representation of the firm’s “Shanshui City” philosophy, meant to inspire, stimulate, and fulfill both the spiritual and emotional needs of its inhabitants through a connection with their surrounding urban environments. These connections are based on creating an urban setting that integrates nature with clean lines and plenty of natural light. Impactful, luxurious, and harmonious, these spaces are meant to elicit physical and emotional connections through architecture and design.

And the new Star building looks to be a continuation of this dynamic philosophy, from its unusual, curvilinear shape to its tree-filled terraces and gardens that are strategically placed throughout. Like the Gardenhouse, it’s also meant to create community connections for not only its inhabitants, but for the pedestrians that frequent the adjacent Sunset Boulevard.

Though MAD took inspiration from some famous Hollywood landmarks for the design, the Star is exceptional in its own right Towering above its neighbors, the 500,000 square foot high-rise will be immediately recognizable among the Hollywood skyline due to its unusual shape and construction. Similar to The Gherkin in London, yet even rounder and more egg-like in appearance, the Star is essentially an enormous glass dome supported by three pipes running through the center of the main structure. But the real draw here is the thin band running across the glassy giant which doubles as a funicular track. On top of that, the new building will also house an enclosed rooftop restaurant, an event space, and a 360-degree observation deck

Of course, special thought was given to the building’s relationship with its biggest users: namely, the employees that will eventually be housed within its shimmering ovoid walls. With an eye toward a “post-COVID reality,” the Star will be designed with its inhabitants’ well-being at the forefront, as seen in the plans for several outdoor spaces and curated gardens scattered throughout the facility for workers to enjoy. Environment was also a key factor in the design process, with the designers aiming to underscore the building’s light, airy qualities for a decidedly approachable feel.

With its dynamic shape and curvature, MAD Architects’ new Star building is destined be a beacon of architectural amazement in the heart of Hollywood. Even better, its futuristic form will house an environment designed to enhance the well-being of the people working inside it — a continuation of the firm’s singular philosophy of integrating nature into forward-thinking design concepts that encourage community involvement and healthy living for all.

The post A Star is Born with MAD Architects’ New Hollywood Office High-Rise first appeared on Dornob.

Everyone’s talking about Cara Delevingne’s vagina tunnel right now, but it’s not quite as scandalous as it sounds (unless you’re the pearl-clutching type). On a tour of her maximalist Los Angeles home for Architectural Digests’s Open Door series, Delevingne revealed a one-of-a-kind feature hidden behind an ordinary-looking cabinet door. The vagina tunnel is exactly what it sounds like: a somewhat anatomically correct, fabric-lined space you can crawl into, sort of like an adult version of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

“I come in here to think, I come in here to create, I come in here to feel inspired in the vagina tunnel,” Delevingne says. “I’m going to show you where this lovely labia leads – see you there!” She then emerges from a pink washing machine on the other side, declaring herself “rebirthed and cleansed.” The tunnel itself features padded walls, feathery curtains in the shape of labia, a dangling ornament resembling a clitoris, and even a golden piercing.

The vagina tunnel is just the loudest, weirdest thing in Delevingne’s eye-popping abode. Architectural Digest describes it as “Saint-Tropez meets Coney Island meets Cotswolds cottage meets Monte Carlo meets butch leather bar,” and that only scratches the surface of just how kooky and eclectic it really is. Designed with the help of architect Nicoló Bini of LINE Architecture, Delevingne’s home reflects a love of nature in the form of outlandish heron-patterned wallpaper, a snake carpet in the billiards room, a leopard carpet on the stairs, bird sculptures by Mexican artist Sergio Bustamante, and an abundance of houseplants and dried greenery.

It’s also a bit cheeky, like the model/actress herself, and the vagina tunnel clearly reflects that vibe. Delevingne wanted the house to feel like “an indoor/outdoor playground by way of Alice in Wonderland.” She incorporated a ball pit, a costume room for dress-up parties, a wall of weird hats, and two trampolines into the design, along with what Delevingne calls her secret “pink pussy palace” featuring serpentine seating, a fringed swing, a mirrored ceiling, and a stripper pole.

“My work requires me to put on many different hats and costumes. I love slipping into these various characters, so I wanted my home to reflect lots of different themes and moods,” she says. “If I’m having a bad day, I just hop in the ball bit. You can’t really cry in a ball pit.”

The vagina tunnel may not be to everyone’s taste, but how about a David Bowie-themed bathroom, a David Lynch-inspired poker room, or a Chemical X sculpture made of thousands of ecstasy pills suspended in acrylic? Just kidding, those things probably aren’t for everyone, either, nor should they be. The house reflects the highly specific personal style of this gender fluid pansexual iconoclast, and it’s a great example of how interior design could be a lot less boring if we all just let loose a little bit and embraced the things that make us unique. Maybe that doesn’t mean installing a vagina tunnel of your own (unless you’re into that), but it’s fun to think about what your version of that outrageous madcap no-holds-barred feature might be.

The post Inside Cara Delevingne’s Vagina Tunnel – and the Rest of Her Wacky LA Home first appeared on Dornob.

Leonardo DiCaprio just dropped $7.1 million on a new home in the tranquil Los Feliz area of Los Angeles, and he won’t even be living in it. Formerly owned by Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson (and Gwen Stefani before that), the gorgeous 5,000-square-foot Spanish-style residence is a gift for Leo’s mother, Irmelin Indenbirken. Built in 1928, the four-bedroom, six-bathroom home strikes the perfect balance between historical charm and modern updates. Details like interior and exterior Juliette balconies, mosaic tiles, ceiling frescos, heavy wooden beams, and ornate wrought iron railings might be enough to make you green with envy, but even if you can’t shell out millions on a similar home, you can still apply some of the same design tricks in your own space.

Go Big With Hanging Light Fixtures

First thing’s first – we have to talk about this incredible foyer. Boasting the kind of quintessential Los Angeles glamour that calls to mind classic films of the 1930s and 40s, this circular space is largely defined by its terracotta stairs, curlicue railing, and palatial hand-painted ceiling. But the star of the show is the massive chandelier that hangs at the center, drawing your eye as you ascend. If your ceiling height allows, consider finding your own version of this showstopper that fits the scale of your tallest room, and it’ll do double-duty as functional lighting and striking sculpture.

Balance Dark and Light

Don’t be afraid to venture over to the dark side. Deep hues won’t necessarily make your space feel cramped and claustrophobic, as long as you balance them out with brightness nearby. In Leo’s new home, an office lined in rich mahogany-toned wood is complemented by the light-filled hallway outside, and a dramatic dining room with indigo wallpaper and a coffered wood ceiling oozes cozy ambiance while the airy white kitchen sparkles with cheerfulness and optimism.

Prioritize Period Details

All the little details that root your home in a particular time period are part of what makes it special. That doesn’t mean you have to keep your ugly 1990s orange oak trim or pink 1950s bathroom set if they’re not your thing, of course. But if, like Leo, you’re lucky enough to have built-in cabinetry, arched doorways, terracotta tile flooring, or other original features intact, consider restoring them instead of replacing them with contemporary alternatives, even if it takes some extra elbow grease. The connection to your home’s history will feel more authentic, especially in the decades to come.

Stick to Your Home’s Overarching Style

On a similar note, try not to fight your home’s intrinsic style and setting. Leonardo’s Spanish-style home is brimming with old school Southern Californian elegance – imagine how weird it would feel if you took in the exterior and then walked in to see interiors more fit for a hunting cabin or an ultramodern penthouse. Keep your home’s overall tone in mind as you make big interior design decisions like flooring, cabinets, and furnishings, but do mix in your own eclectic influences and personal style to keep the effect from feeling forced.

Embrace Rich, Saturated Color Schemes

Even if the rest of your house has neutral walls, you should think about experimenting with color in at least one room. Leo’s new formal living area, with its lush blue-green walls and ceiling set against amber and gold-toned furniture, is a great example of how bold color choices can completely transform a space. Not only does the color perfectly set off the antique woodwork and flooring, it also makes all the wall art pop. Scared of the commitment? Try it in a bathroom or even a closet first and see how you feel.

Don’t Skimp on Decorating Outdoor Spaces

California’s perpetually mild climate makes outdoor space just as integral to daily living as indoor rooms, so it’s no surprise that these outdoor sitting areas are so well-appointed. Whether you have a whole yard to decorate or just a balcony, grant it your full attention in a way that’s tuned to your own local weather. Choose side tables, lamps, candles, rugs, and other accents that feel like a natural extension of your living room and an expression of your personal style.

The post 6 Style Tips to Steal From Leonardo DiCaprio’s New $7.1 Million LA Home first appeared on Dornob.

There’s no mistaking the fact that this pale blue residence is home to a basketball enthusiast. After all, the first thing you see from the curb is a cantilevered volume stretching out a hoop over a painted court on the driveway. Even if architect Stephane Malka hadn’t named it “Dunk House,” it probably would’ve ended up with that nickname around its Manhattan Beach, California neighborhood, anyway. This bold front-and-center placement pays homage to the Los Angeles street basketball tradition and announces to the world that the home belongs to an unnamed retired pro basketball player.

From there, the home’s identity gets less literal, but no less gorgeous. “Dunk House” is really a love letter to LA, defined first and foremost by its color. Malka created a special shade of “Los Angeles Blue” just for this application, explaining that the polarized paint interacts “with the various solar luminosities, and automatically adjusts its color to match the Californian sky’s tones, merging the house with its surrounding.” This gives the home a “contemporary stealth camouflage” that makes it less obtrusive in the landscape, merging almost seamlessly into its surroundings.

That camouflage continues from the main house to the mirrored guest home in the backyard, which reflects all the lovely sky blue as well as the adjacent palm trees and the swimming pool that stretches between the two buildings. Facing each other with oversized windows, the volumes feel like extensions of each other, and as the “Los Angeles Blue” paint penetrates the interiors, it helps to blur the lines between indoors and out.

“The result is a contextual alliance between the very materiality of the villa its surrounding, proactively interacting towards the streets of LA, the beach community, the sun’s latitude, and the sky intensity,” Malka says.

The blue is just as refreshing inside as it is on the exterior walls. Used to define a double-height lounge area, it’s painted on the walls and floors and continues with a gradient effect onto the glossy built-in cabinetry. Skylights let the sun play the same visual tricks here as it does outside, amplified by the reflections off the water. The home’s all-white furniture mimics the lounge chairs by the pool in a nod to LA’s perpetually temperate weather.

Though we only glimpse the common areas of the home in Malka’s photos, we still get a sense of the mood that likely continues into more private spaces. The bright cheerful blue shifts into textural sand-colored floors, while white walls deeper inside the home aid in reflecting the plentiful sunlight.

Already known for her acting, singing, and dancing skills, Ashley Tisdale is now adding another line to her resume: interior design.

After her most recent home renovation and sale, the actress launched a new design business called Frenshe Interiors. Announcing the venture on her popular lifestyle blog of the same name, Tisdale also declared that she would be taking a break from doing her own renovations for a while as she was expecting her first child and wanted to “be more present in my life for my family.” Baby girl Jupiter Iris was born on March 23rd, 2021.

To date, the bulk of the posts on her newly created @Frensheinteriors Instagram account have been highlights from the residence Tisdale and her husband Christopher French sold in January. After buying the 4,214-square-foot Los Angeles property for $4.1 million in 2019, Ashley worked with her contractor father Michael Tisdale and several of her favorite designers to transform the house into a chic abode that resold for $5.78 million.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CLuTmvUgwUQ/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

https://www.instagram.com/p/CMAXpAxpDfV/

“We walked into a home that had sadly been forgotten; the couple was getting divorced, and I think the house suffered as well,” Tisdale wrote. “There were pieces of the wood floor missing in rooms, leaking walls from leaking windows and weird design choices like painting the beautiful gazebo and window trim white so the house had no dimension. We realized this was not what we expected and it was gonna be a huge undertaking but with my dad, Michael Tisdale, being a contractor (and us not afraid of renovating) we were excited to bring this house back to life.”

After completing the most pressing projects like replacing the roof and waterproofing the windows, Ashley turned her attention to the aesthetics. To modernize the house – located in L.A.’s Los Feliz neighborhood – Tisdale had steel doors and European oak floors installed but held onto many details like leaded glass windows and light fixtures that were original to the 1923 dwelling.

She also decided to go bold with color in several of the rooms, painting the dining room a rich forest green, giving the living room fireplace a coat of denim blue, and creating black and white stripes around a downstairs powder room. The entryway, designed by celebrity interior artists Pierce & Ward, features an intricate wallpaper throughout.

“I would have never gone for wallpaper because I’m not a huge wallpaper fan, but they killed it with this entry. They created a beautiful[ly] ornate but stylish welcoming to the home,” Tisdale wrote in an Instagram post.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CNaU4D9p6vK/

The kitchen was a special labor of love, as Ashley and her husband committed to using a small IKEA kitchenette for a year while the renovations were being completed. Decked out in white subway tile and white shaker cabinets, Tisdale added a wood ceiling and a butcher block island to soften the look. The eating nook features a custom fireplace conceived and built by her father.

Ashley also revamped the outdoor deck, pool, and lounge area, throwing in some color and stripes.

For fans of the actress who worry that home design might distract her from her first craft, Ashley put those fears to rest. When asked by Architectural Digest about her goals for the new business, Tisdale replied, “To have fun. This isn’t my full-time job. I’m an actress first. I just have a passion for interior design and will continue to help friends and clients when I have the chance.”

The post Frenshe Interiors: Inside Ashley Tisdale’s New Interior Design Company first appeared on Dornob.

Some architects attempt to liven up drab and uninspiring office spaces by bringing in a little greenery. Spanish architecture firm Selgascano did the opposite for co-working space Second Home Hollywood, bringing the offices outside. It doesn’t hurt that the Los Angeles location practically begs you to spend as much time as possible outdoors with its sunny, temperate climate, but the way the design staggers these organically shaped office pods through the landscape makes Second Home feel a bit like an architectural interpretation of a lemon grove.

The site, formerly owned by the Assistance League of Southern California, was special in the first place. Its primary structure is a classic Neocolonial building designed by Paul Williams (the first recognized Black architect to work in Los Angeles), which the firm renovated for the project. It’s now used as the main entrance for the co-working campus and its largest indoor space, featuring a café, bar, restaurant, event and conference hall, resting areas, terraces, and 200 workspaces. A second building on the lot was demolished to make way for 60 new oval-shaped single-story offices and meeting rooms.

It’s these pods that make the site so unique. Not only are they scattered among palm trees and tropical greenery, but they’re also ringed in glass to offer 360-degree views of the gardens. Birds of Paradise, ficus, ferns, and other plants double as privacy screens for the people working in each individual office pod. The architects envision these workspaces, capable of hosting 700 people, as oversized plant pots. They sit on top of an existing underground parking facility and are nestled into a four-foot layer of soil atop the concrete slab, creating a sunken effect.

The effect is remarkably relaxing for a workspace, and seems true to Second Home’s claims that it’s the healthiest place to work in the entire city. If you prefer to work in the open air, you can do that too at any number of open tables, benches, and loungers sprinkled throughout the campus. The vivid yellow hue of the office pods makes the whole place feel cheerful, and that mood continues into the indoor communal spaces, which are also full of greenery.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="View inside Selgacanso's Second Home Hollywood co-working space.

The site is the first American location for Second Home, a London-based co-working company, and opened in September 2019. Not the best timing for a communal workspace, considering what came to pass in the following year. But while many other co-working companies hemorrhaged cash during the pandemic, unable to pack their facilities full of busy workers, Second Home Hollywood was able to continue functioning more or less as usual. Each pod is individually ventilated and has windows that open. The design could serve as a blueprint for similarly healthy office spaces in our post-pandemic future, though of course it might have to be modified for colder climates.

“How architecture relates with the environment is crucial to our well-being,” says Diego Cano-Lasso, a partner at Selgascano, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. “One of the best aspects of living in L.A. is to be able to open a door and be surrounded by nature. That close relationship with the good weather, hummingbirds and flowers is lost if you have stairs, elevators, or corridors in the way. The goal was to work in a garden, where you can be indoors but the outdoors is just a door away.”

The post Selgascano’s Second Home Hollywood is an Experimental Outdoor Office Packed with Plants first appeared on Dornob.

When it comes to interior design, a picture is indeed worth 1,000 words – which explains why we do things like scour through magazines and clip out images of rooms that speak to us. Of course in the age of the internet, we have Pinterest pinned to our bookmark bar and scroll Instagram regularly to dial in our favored designs. Sometimes we even look to the stars (Hollywood stars, that is) to pinpoint a vibe we love enough to replicate. With this in mind, HomeAdvisor linked arms with a team of architects and designers to recreate the floor plans of seven celebrity master bedrooms meant to inspire:

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Once they relocated to Santa Barbara, California, the royal couple invested $14.65 million in their not-so-humble abode known as “Chateau of Riven Rock.” Their new place is perfect for hosting guests – though they might deny as much when it comes to family, if reports are to be trusted. But regardless of political and personal decisions regarding who sleeps where, the couple’s home boasts six bedrooms in the main house and an additional two-bedroom guest house.

Defined by the French Provincial style, the master bedroom combines a touch of fairytale with a dose of romanticism. Dark wood features stand out against yellow walls and accent the white decor in the bathroom. An adjacent sunroom provides natural light from three sides, streaming in through copious windows.

Ariana Grande

To call this bedroom “Grande” is not only punny, but accurate. The master suite in Ariana Grande’s L.A. home covers the entire upper level. There’s a closet so large, it’s about the size of a standard apartment. Yes, just the closet. A terrace, bed, and lounging area round out the space – all overlooking Trousdale Estates and the canyon. While relaxing between sets, Ariana can head to the en-suite bathroom for a soak in her deluxe oval bathtub, configured to enjoy expansive scenic views.

Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer may still be central to current pop culture, but her home decor style screams midcentury modern. “Sexy is important, but comfort is essential,” she notes. Jen’s interior designer Stephen Shadley agrees with this, saying, “Jen is drawn to wood, stone, and bronze, materials that have real substance and depth. No matter how beautiful or glamorous something is, it has to be warm and inviting.” Jen’s idea of welcoming must include seating, as she offers her visitors several options in that department, including bean bags that look perfect for both human and furry guests. The room’s desk and dual sitting areas are streamlined to include art and designer pieces against a neutral backdrop of earth tones.

Justin and Hailey Bieber

This power couple sleeps in one of the seven bedrooms of their $25.8 million Beverly Hills home. Every section of the modern architectural design, from the attached bathroom on one side to the sitting and office area on the other, offers views of the Franklin Canyon Reserve.

Jennifer Lawrence

Also in L.A., Jennifer Lawrence’s $8 million residence has a uniquely old Hollywood vibe. Dark wood flooring acts as a backdrop for the clean white decor of the sitting and desk areas while an accent rug softens the bed’s location inside a smaller alcove. The adjacent bathroom is similarly draped in white, from the curtains to the fixtures, both of which offer bold contrast to the gold accents. Massive French doors open up for views of the landscape and pool below.

Travis Scott

Home is where the heart is, but there’s nothing wrong with getting a deal on real estate. Rapper Travis Scott certainly has something to sing about with his $23.5 million home, considering the fact that the original asking price topped $42 million. The hilltop location in Los Angeles invites elements of nature throughout the master suite. Described as a cross between an art gallery and a spa, the suite, along with the rest of the house, meets Delos Well Building Certification standards, which means it provides an optimized level of healthy air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mindfulness.

Selena Gomez

Back in L.A., Selena’s home previously belonged to Tom Petty. It’s unclear whether the present design caters to his taste or hers, but since there are two master suites, maybe there’s one of each. The lower-level one where Gomez rests her head features elements of a hacienda and characteristics of a farmhouse, such as the barn ceiling.
