“Glow brings an entirely new level of fun that lets kids be kids and welcomes grown-ups into an exciting new way to connect and bond, even when they’re far away,” said Joerg Tewes, General Manager of Amazon Glow. “We’ve created an unbreakable, supersized, projected surface like no other, fusing digital and physical fun that excites kids and delights grown-ups with all they can do together.”

Virtually Endless Digital Fun

Topped with a 720p camera, the Glow’s 8-inch display is supposed to hit a sweet spot between the display sizes of a phone and a tablet, easy to perch on the edge of a table during a call. The 19-inch mat works with an array of digital pencils, crayons, paint brushes, and spray paint, along with a “vacuum eraser” when they want to start over. Kids can also choose from thousands of children’s books in the Amazon Kids+ library (which is included free for the first year) and games like Chess, Checkers, Go Fish, and Memory Match.

The ability to scan physical objects to turn them into digital objects is a particularly fun feature. Kids can bring a favorite toy to life, turn it into a puzzle, or reimagine it as a painting. A series of learning kits called “Glow Bits” offers another way to blend the digital world with reality, like the Tangram puzzle game, in which kids use physical shapes while their remote family member uses digital shapes to solve challenges together.

Limitations, Both Positive and Negative

The friends and family members on the other end use a tablet to participate in the activities via the free Glow app. Surprisingly, compatible tablets don’t yet include Amazon’s ultra-affordable Fire, but the company says that will change soon. You also can’t play Glow-to-Glow, so kids in different households trying to play together are going to have very different experiences. Amazon seems to view the Glow more as a way for kids to get enhanced quality time with relatives who live far away, and on that front, it does deliver. Kids tend to get bored quickly on ordinary video calls, but these activities will keep them entertained much longer.

The Glow is for kids ages three and up, and there are activities designed for every age bracket. The Amazon Parent Dashboard lets parents manage approved contacts and view recent calls. The fact that the Glow is so tightly focused on Amazon Kids+ and a limited range of activities is both a plus and a minus. There’s no web browser and therefore no opportunities for kids to wander into inappropriate content, but the fact that the standalone device doesn’t connect to other smart home devices in Amazon’s ecosystem or others can be a limitation. Every participant has to have an Amazon account, too, and the device doesn’t support Bluetooth headsets, ostensibly so that parents can listen in on the conversations.

This device is currently one of Amazon’s Day 1 Editions, which is basically a closed beta program, so it’s unclear when it will be offered for general release or whether it will be a permanent part of Amazon’s offerings. Currently, you have to request an invitation to purchase it on the product page, and due to limited quantities, not all requests will be granted.

With its 139,000 members, the Repaintings online community has posted thousands of funny retouched secondhand art. The group’s summary and invitation reads, “Find a painting at a garage sale, thrift store, or in the trash and repaint it. Add some monsters! Add a UFO! Some lasers? Don’t mind if I do! Post the results. Before and After pics appreciated.”

The rules are simple: the art must make an attempt at humor, no digital art (only good-old-fashioned by-hand techniques), and no memes or politics.

The artwork ranges in skill from rudimentary to masterful, with themes all over the board. Even our COVID-19 times get a shoutout with a recent poster featuring a nursery bookshelf scene that transforms into the “A-paw-calypse,” with all the stuffed animals in face and gas masks.

Another poster capitalized on the recent Bernie Sanders mitten craze by painting the sitting senator with his iconic handwear at the table in an old café setting.

Cartoon figures and video game icons are a particularly popular insertion by posters. One formerly serene beach background now features SpongeBob and Patrick running across the sand to greet Gary the sea snail. Another finds the Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine stuck in a river. Mario and Luigi and their pals race cars under an old stone bridge in one remake, and a giant Meowth hot air balloon carries Team Rocket through a snowy mountain setting as Ash and Pikachu look on in another. One post even turns a vista of rising birds into the video game Duck Hunt.

Others take on pop culture references from live-action Hollywood. One 18th-century damsel gets a makeover as a Ghostbuster, complete with backpack and gun pointed at Slimer. In another post, we see Darth Vader from behind, sitting in a lifeguard tower, gazing out at the seagulls and ocean as his black cape flaps in the wind. One clever crafter attached a Demi-gorgon head to a dog on the cover of an old Life magazine. And a young maid in an impressionistic field of pastels gets the shock of her life when the canvas is ripped up to reveal a leering Jack Nicholson shouting, “Here’s Johnny!”

A few art transformations make a nod to literature. One still life now shows a tiny Alice in Wonderland looking up at the mocking tiger lilies and daisies. The Kraken from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea makes an appearance in another post to wrap its tentacles around a few sailing vessels. And one hints at the childhood favorite Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs as syrupy waffles invade the sky over a winter barn scene.

One talented artist gave a 1700s girl the Haunted Mansion treatment, painting a parrot on her shoulder and skeletons to both that can only be seen in UV light. Another macabre offering is the words “they won’t ever find your body” affixed to a painted plate that originally only showed a rowboat docked in the marshy grass between trees.

Amazon gets its own tribute, with a Victorian schoolhouse metamorphosing into a shipping warehouse, complete with kids filling, sealing, and stacking packages.

And then there are the just plain silly ones. A banana gets duct-taped to a lofty mountain in one post, while a curious cow’s snout takes up the foreground of a landscape in another. A dignified Renaissance gent gets a pie to the side of his face, and a series of floral vases turn into goofy monster faces.

Even though this online community got its start back in 2014, long before COVID, its members are still providing some much-needed laughs in today’s socially-distanced world.

When the coronavirus pandemic first brought normal life to a screeching halt in March 2020, retired interior designer Annie Kampfe suddenly found herself with more time on her hands. She pulled out the dollhouse kit she’d purchased from Earth and Tree Miniatures in Amherst, New Hampshire in 2017 and got to work alongside her husband, Cliff Donnelly. Instead of faithfully reproducing the model, though, they subverted the kit, recutting almost every piece to achieve the midcentury modern vibe they were after.

What began as a way to pass the time soon became a passion. The Kansas City, Missouri couple wanted their “mini modern house” to feel like a real space, so they spent thousands of hours throughout 2020 perfecting every last detail of the three-story, 13-room miniature home, working in 1 to 12 (inches) scale. Using tiny tools, they handcrafted the components as true to life as possible, often using real materials like wood, tile, mortar, and concrete, as would be appropriate for the full-scale versions.

Kampfe was inspired by the house she grew up in, which her parents built in Omaha, Nebraska. She spent a lot of time searching for just the right pieces to put inside the miniature, which all had to be midcentury modern in style. Most of it is vintage and German in origin, but some came from contemporary artists and craftspeople she found online. She even sourced a few pieces from her childhood home, including cork wallpaper her parents had hanging in their den.

Each room of the dollhouse is a marvel, with a lot to take in. The possessions are perfectly disheveled, as if the miniature occupants just stepped out. In the living room, which Kampfe floored with wood in a parquet pattern, there are tiny paintings, candlesticks, books, liquor bottles, drinking glasses, and textiles she needlepointed herself. The house is wired for electricity, too, so the lamps (custom-made by a friend) all work.

Before the pandemic began, the couple did a lot of traveling, allowing them to pick up miniatures from cities like Atlanta, Maine, New York, and Paris for the home. The tiger-shaped rug in the master bedroom, found in a local store, is the piece that started the whole project. “It intrigued me because I’m a lifelong needlepointer,” she told Today. “I asked the gal who owned the shop what it was used for, and she said, ‘Annie, I think it’s meant to be a dollhouse rug.’”

In January, when the home was more or less complete, Kampfe’s son posted about the project on Twitter, and interest in their design soon exploded across the internet. Since then, they’ve continued to modify and refine the dollhouse, adding a basement level with a functional garage door. They offer close-up views and details on each space on Instagram @minimoderndollhouse.

“We had no idea Scott was going to put those photos on his Twitter,” Kampfe told Today. “I thought he was teasing me — he was like, ‘Mom, you’re going viral.’ I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’ We don’t necessarily love all the attention we’re getting, but I love the joy and happiness that this little miniature world has brought to a lot of people. It’s just been so humbling that something we’ve enjoyed so much made people happy.”

On the long, boring summer days of childhood, creativity tends to run wild. That creativity, however, doesn’t always manifest itself in the safest ways. For example, we can remember riding down the stairs in sleeping bags, laundry baskets, cardboard baskets, and trash bags. As fun as that was, it was exceptionally dangerous and often ended in pain.

Inventor Trisha Cleveland could save current and future generations of kids from bodily harm with her invention, the SlideRider. It’s more or less one very long plastic-covered foam mat that stretches over your stairs to turn them into an indoor slide. It features safety bumpers on the sides to ensure your little ones don’t go sliding off of the side and into the stair railings and a soft landing pad at the bottom.

When you and your kids are done playing with the slide, it folds up very neatly into a handy little package held together with a storage strap. The folded package even has handles on either side to help you move the SlideRider around and put it away.

Cleveland is developing the product with Quirky, the public think-tank that makes regular people’s inventions into real products. So far the development process seems to be moving along, but there is one unanswered question: how will kids get back up the stairs once they slide to the bottom?

Logistics aside, it’s easy to see there’s a demand for a fun and safe product like this. Quirky is reportedly looking for a manufacturer who can transform this concept into a real product for sale, and they’re soliciting opinions from the public about how much it should cost. Pretty cool, huh?

Created by ad agency Instinct as part of the brand’s 20th anniversary in Russia, the campaign features six designs for homemade forts and tents: Cåstle, Wigwåm, Cåve, Cåmpingtent, Förtress, and Höuse. Of course, the brand’s own products are featured as the components of each one, but you can always get creative and replace them with whatever you have on hand.

“Cåstle” uses four chairs, a vertical clothing stand, two sheets, clothespins, a battery-powered string light, a blanket, and three pillows to create a spacious illuminated fort that’s probably big enough for adults to use as well as children, if you’re so inclined.

“Förtress” consists of a couch and its various cushions, a sheet, clothespins, a blanket, and pillows. The cushions are lifted up and used to create a barrier, while the seat provides cover overhead.

“Wigwåm” mimics the shape of an indigenous tipi with a clothing stand, sheet, books, rope, another string light, pillows, and clips. You could probably use tent poles, crutches, or even branches if you don’t have the “TJUSIG” element handy.

“Höuse” is probably the simplest and most familiar shape, made by simply draping a couple sheets over a table and securing them with clothespins and books. Add a light and a stuffed animal if you like.

“Cåmpingtent” replaces the table with a clothes rack and adds an extra fun element: the octopus-shaped “Pressa” hanging clothes dryer in the center for the string lights.

“Cåve” uses an armchair, a sheet, books, a battery-powered string light, and three pillows for a small and simple fort that will take no time at all to clean back up when the kids are done with it.

IKEA has had its own unique ways of responding to the coronavirus pandemic in its various locations around the world while many of its stores remain closed. For instance, the furniture giant shared its recipe for its famous sweet and savory Swedish meatballs so you can make them at home, including the “iconic Swedish cream sauce” made with flour, butter, cream, soy sauce, and Dijon mustard.

In Germany, the company allowed the massive parking lot of a closed store near Frankfurt to be used by observants of Islam to pray together during Ramadan while observing social distancing laws. Over 800 Muslims were able to safely gather while remaining at least six feet apart for an important closing prayer on Eid al-Fitr, the end of the month-long fast.

The Amazing Internet Portfolio Category

Since this one of the most difficult categories, the awards team offers its entrants a couple tips. For starters, your collection must have four images. They don’t have to be related to one another, but you’re sure to score more points if they are. For example, you might submit four hilarious frames all featuring jungle cats.

The Underwater Category

This group has to include creatures that actually live in the water, like fish and marine mammals. If you submit a zebra swimming across a lake, it sadly won’t count.

The Video Clip Category

You can submit no more than two video clips in this category, each one of which must be 60 seconds or less. A maximum resolution of 1080p HD at 30fps, and a maximum file size of 150MB, are the upper limits here, but anything below those numbers will also work just fine. Just be sure the clips are uploadable by Vimeo.

Created by utterly inventive Hungarian ALTAR furniture, this “one and only love child of Star Wars pinball and R2D2” has snagged a 2015 A’Design Award and garnered – deservedly – lots of international attention. The object, a bona fide coffee table on wheels, is basically a vintage “Star Wars” pinball field housed in the body of an R2D2.

This next piece of info (get ready for total geek-out), might be the most exciting aspect of this amazing creation: It has a mini slide projector that displays “R2D2 in the Death Stars’ sewage.” It beeps, it blinks, it whirs, it pings (see video below), it took 321 hours to come alive, and it costs circa $13,000 (if still available), not counting shipping from Budapest. It’s epic. We rest our case.

Its creators, ALTAR furniture, have devoted themselves to rescuing pin ball machines after they die, imbuing them with a second, awesome coffee table life as “wonderfully complicated, meticulously planned and crafted sexy beings,” as they so eloquently write on their website.

Ask any amusement park enthusiast what the most terrifying ride is, and most will name some type of death-defying roller coaster. The horrifying aspects usually include breakneck speeds on hairpin turns, seemingly endless vertical slopes that seem to climb for days and then drop you like a rock on the other side, and cars that appear to be plummeting to the ground at virtually every curve. Definitely not for the faint of heart — or someone who just chowed down a corn dog and a basketball-sized globe of cotton candy.

Now imagine a really slow roller coaster. Doesn’t sound very exciting, does it? In fact, a carousel ride sounds more exhilarating. But if you factor in a few important details, you’ll understand why the SkyCycle in Japan strikes fear in the hearts of even the most seasoned thrill seekers.

Pedal Power

Instead of motors, gears, pulleys, and chains propelling cars around the track, SkyCycle is powered by pedals. Not just any pedals, but pedals operated by the riders. It sounds boring at first thought, like a piece of playground equipment designed to amuse toddlers, but it’s already been called the most terrifying roller coaster on Earth.

The Seat

Conventional roller coaster seats are built out of heavy gauge steel or aluminum. Passengers are typically secured in place with both a lap belt and a shoulder harness. For extra security, a metal bar is locked into place diagonally to keep you inside if you happen to fly off the track and end up hurled into the atmosphere.

Not so with SkyCycle. The seat is literally a bicycle seat, which makes weird sense since it’s attached to a metal pole that connects to the wheel (yes, that’s singular) that sits on the track. The backrest is a U-shaped piece of conduit with a small pad attached for your comfort. The so-called safety belt is a three-inch wide piece of cloth, similar to the first lap-style seatbelts installed in cars…the ones that cut you in half during major impacts.

These seats are arranged in sets of two. You can ride alone, but that adds the danger of imbalance, which high winds can make doubly terrifying when you’re only stopped in by a fabric sash.

The Height

If you still think this sounds like the most boring amusement park ride ever, wait until you factor in the height of rails you’re pedaling on: 53 feet off the ground. Still sounds kind of wimpy? Pshaw! 53 feet is nothing! In reality, 53 feet is equal to more than three stories of an office or apartment building, which are typically 15 feet tall each. Not exactly a fall out of the bed of a pickup truck should things go wrong.

The Payoffs

The ride typically takes about three minutes, though many riders have said it feels more like three hours. But on top of causing people to pedal and possibly pray, the most popular attraction at the Washuzan Highland amusement park in Okayama, Japan also provides one of the most fantastic views in the city, and of the dazzling islands that dot the nearby Seto Inland Sea.

If you fancy yourself a top-notch daredevil, testing your mettle on SkyCycle will certainly take you closer to the crown.

At the intersection of art and design sit the chairs of William Stone, a series of cut-and-paste chair designs that mix and match elements from existing seats with stranger parts like thick and bulky rough-hewn logs.

Existing structural elements that would normally seem ordinary are suddenly called into question, standing out as visual anomolies – their thinness and regularity seeming more impressive under the weighty misshapen objects they support.

In other cases, Stone takes only new and natural pieces to create wholes that are at once unique and somehow easy to believe. Their simplicity reflects a kind of do-it-yourself approach that makes one want to make his or her own at home.

From standard supports to wheeled bases and rocking rails, each of these chairs is different and yet made part of a similar set by virtue of how they were created and the combination of new and old, natural and man-made elements used.

In addition to the chairs shown individually above, Stone has exhibited a great many other Frankenstein-esque custom art chairs assembled from all kinds of parts – including ones composed entirely of single-function pieces like legs, backs or bottoms.

Color and playfulness define this interior intervention in a children’s space located within Kalorias Health Club in Portugal. The space is meant to provide a place for children to play, learn, and simply be kids. Ultimately, the deisigners, Estudio Amatam, wanted to give kids a space in which to use their imaginations and make the place their own.

Previously a space used to host corporate events, the Kalorias Children’s Space needed to be updated with children’s needs in mind. A bright but soothing shade of blue leads into the space, accompanied by playful alphabet wallpaper. Each arch in the corridor leads to a different room, each with its own defined function.

The colorful Play Room is defined by its grass carpet which continues onto a wall. The glossy bright stripes above contrast with the grass-like floor and enhance the room’s visual stimulation.

The reading room gives kids a slightly calmer environment in which to read, study, and watch movies. The black walls are actually blackboards that children can write and draw on, and the walls can become a screen for movies or cartoons.

The visual arts room features bright lights against a soft blue ceiling, resembling a starry night. The various portals, cubby holes and hiding spots inspire creative play and allow kids to explore and simply be kids.

The Open Play room is the most versatile space of all, giving kids a space to play sports, socialize, and explore. A mountain of Tetris-like blocks against one wall can be used as seating or as a fun climbing playground for kids. A small stage in the room also allows for fun theatrics.

“Designing this space for children led us to a journey through time and space in search of that restlessness that exists in the background of all beings , the imagery that makes us dream and we always seek whenever we need our most childish and creative essence.”
