In another blow to the already beleaguered home buyer’s market, Zillow recently released a revised home price forecast predicting that U.S. home prices would rise approximately 14.9 percent between March 2022 and March 2023. While this is a slight downturn of almost three percent from their estimates last month, it’s still not the most encouraging news for people in the market for new digs.

The already distinctively difficult market has become even more complicated due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as many people have had to evaluate how they both live and work by either working from home or incorporating a hybrid home/work schedule. So where does this leave young professionals looking for affordable housing?

While the answer is complex, there are some developers looking to create affordable solutions when it comes to finding a place to call home.

Enter French developer Bouyges Immobilier, who launched a co-living company last year to create a new template for how “we rent, use, and share living spaces.” Pairing with the Paris-based architecture studio Cutwork, Immobilier’s aim is deceptively simple: an interior design concept that gives “working people, between 25 to 40 years old, [access to] high-quality, affordable living and a socially connected life…” But how does this lofty goal translate in real life?

To find the answer, look to LEGO.

Currently on display in Paris, the 26-square-meter PolyRoom prototype prefab unit is the ultimate building block creation translated into real-life housing. Designed to stack like LEGO bricks, the prefab modules are built using conventional construction methods — but instead of your standard cookie-cutter apartment units, these units are composed with residents’ ever-changing needs in mind, offering unique spaces to live, work, and adapt. To accomplish this, the modules were modeled to be literally transformative, equipped with movable furniture and clever storage solutions that maximize the living space and its potential for adaptation.

Based on the Japanese concept of washitsu, Cutwork co-founder and architect Antonin Yuji Maeno envisioned spaces that were multipurpose and flexible. He says, “It’s no longer about the amount of square meters [physical living space] we live in but about living in polyvalent spaces that are designed to be reconfigured to fit all our intimate and social needs.”

The bottom line? Residents have a home space that’s in flux and adaptable (yet comfortable), with plenty of options for living their best hybrid work/home lives. Plus, these prefab units can be created more quickly than more traditional building methods, stacking up like LEGO bricks into ready-to-move-in spots that hope to make their mark in the affordable housing sphere.

And just because the units act on the same principle as LEGO bricks doesn’t mean they’ll be dull, drab, and like those dreaded office cubicles stacked on end. Instead, Cutwork hopes to incorporate eco-friendly touches like balconies, facades, and rooftops full of native plants — lush, green spaces that interact with the local ecosystem instead of solely disrupting it. Hoping to open at least 15 of these sites by 2025 (that’s 2,500 PolyRoom bedrooms!), Bouyges Immobilier is ready to impress with these prefab beauties that are transformable and economical, efficient and eco-friendly.

The post These Stackable LEGO-Like Prefab Apartments Reinvent Affordable Housing first appeared on Dornob.

The Filipino island of Cagbalete is getting a unique beachfront property soon – one that combines native industries like farming and fishing with an element of recreation and tourism.

The Cagbalete Sand Clusters, designed by Carlo Calma Consultancy Inc., was created for a client looking to build a second home during the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020. With a goal of “farm leisure,” the 9.4-acre property will contain a four-bedroom residential unit for the owner, a farm-to-table restaurant, ponds for growing and harvesting mud crabs, a garden for fresh vegetables, a lighthouse, multi-story walkways and performance spaces, and lower-level swimming grottos.

“Since this is an agricultural land, the project has to be built in an ethical way with a faster and less wasteful construction method,” said chief architect and firm founder Carlo Calma in an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “Looking at the site, we set up a mud crab farm to prevent soil erosion. The mud crabs will eventually be part of the restaurant’s menu.”

Not only will the food be grown and caught on site, but the energy needs will also be self-sustained. Traditional solar panels are incorporated into custom sun umbrellas to generate the power required for the residence. “There are things in market that don’t have quality in design. We are turning these panels into sculptural pieces that are functional and sustainable even on a small scale. Its application of technology starts with the house,” Calma explains. Open-air ventilation will also help keep energy costs to a minimum.

The actual structure is made up of a series of hyperbolic pods that can assembled in multiple configurations. “The units can be stacked like LEGO blocks or pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle. One unit consists of five modules that you can rotate, flip, or move around in different ways. You can make different spatial arrangements out of them. Every unit will be unique,” added the London-trained Calma. The curving shape was inspired by the ocean coral found just off-shore from the property.

Each module will be fashioned from noncorrosive materials, including glass fiber reinforced concrete and glass fiber reinforced polymer rebar, to combat the destructive influence of salt air. The design also integrates local hapa nets as shade, sunbathing hammocks, and mosquito protection. “They have elevated the humble hapa net into something beyond its utilitarian origins,” the project’s official press release states. “It is now both part of the structure’s construction membrane, a tool for food production, and a web that facilitates the daily activities of the structure’s inhabitants, enmeshing time, culture, and space.”

Construction of the Cagbalete Sand Clusters is underway, with the residential unit on track to be completed in December 2021. Mud crabs have already been planted in the area for cultivation.

Carlo Calma Consultancy Inc. was founded in 2009 in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig, Philippines, as an art and architecture firm that aimed “to push boundaries in design thinking, architectural practice, and construction.” The developer has created dozens of residential and commercial buildings to date, best known for their geometric and organic shapes, as well as their art installations throughout the country.

The post Stackable Sand Clusters Blend Farming and Fishing with Tourism first appeared on Dornob.

Looking for high-end furniture that’s both sustainable and stylish? Oku Space, a new furniture company with a homebase in Melbourne, Australia, certainly fits that bill. Established in February 2020 by a pair of creatives with experience in both visionary product design and quality furniture manufacturing, this simple yet sophisticated brand recently dropped a debut collection whose clean lines and simple shapes pair with eco-friendly practices to create pieces full of form and function.

“The word ‘Oku’ relates to the concept of space within and often hidden.” This is the company’s statement, and it’s what visitors to their website are first greeted with upon entering the world of Oku Space. And truly, it could be considered the underlying ethos that defines all the Aussie duo’s pieces. The goal of founders Nick Rennie and Dustin Fritsche is to first and foremost create quality furniture, though their emphasis on creative (and sometimes quirky) design is what initially catches the eye and draws buyers in.

The two had been sharing a workshop for years before they founded Oku Space, and given their combined expertise, it only seemed logical for them to enter the furniture making arena. This first line of theirs consists of 11 eclectic, beautifully made pieces that give off a high-end vibe without feeling too precious to be utilized in everyday life. The collection is also timber-focused, proudly showing off the creators’ craftsmanship and ability to imagine furniture that’s so much more than the sum of its parts as it captivates the eye and takes everyday, practical seating to the next level.

The star of the show is the OS1, a dining chair with a deceptively midcentury modern shape that marries the clean lines and sparse aesthetic found in several of the collection’s other pieces. But what really sets the OS1 apart is its stackability. Though extremely functional, it’s pretty much the furthest thing from those rigid metal folding chairs or hotel ballroom monstrosities that offer neither comfort nor style. Instead, it’s lovely both as a stand-alone object and even more so when combined and stacked with its fellows, thus creating a new shape all its own.

The stackability of the OS1 is also important from a sustainability perspective, as both Rennie and Fritsche hope to develop their furniture responsibly and with minimal waste. As Rennie says, “[With chairs] as whilst most fundamental is the comfort, they need to be functional as well, and this is why I think the stackability is so important.” He goes on to add that “the benefits especially from a shipping perspective [are] really important as it allows us to minimize the possible carbon footprint of the object.”

With the trifecta of functionality, sustainability, and style on their side, Oku Space is destined to be a success in producing quality high-end furniture that lasts a long time. For now though, you can catch us lounging on chairs featured in this delightful debut collection.

The post Oku Space’s First Furniture Collection is Both Sustainable and Stylish first appeared on Dornob.

Great things can happen when modern design meets sustainability, and this new furniture collection is proof. Circular design shop Supernovas recently collaborated with design studio Odd Matter to create Afterlife, a colorful duo made entirely from recycled plastic. These heavy-duty pieces are durable enough to last a long time but are fully recyclable when they’re finally ready for a new purpose, too.

The Afterlife collection consists of a storage crate and a bench, both of which are stackable so you can create your own custom configurations. The benches can double as shelves and the crates can be used as planters, or pretty much anything else you can dream up. The design’s signature “nipple connection” uses a 3D-printed plastic bolt to keep each module secure without the need for any additional fasteners or tools. Both items are also weatherproof, so you can use them both indoors and out.

“Supernovas challenged Odd Matter to develop a collection that empowers dynamic living, with designs that give waste an afterlife and ensure the recyclability of the products at the end of their lifecycles. With the unique process that brings together different types of cutting-edge manufacturing techniques, Afterlife is made from recycled plastic waste streams such as PE and PET – namely those found in bottles, packaging, squeeze bottles, toys, gas and water pipes.”

Supernovas’ London and Madrid design teams pioneered a combination of three manufacturing techniques to produce these recycled, easy-assemblage products. Rotomolding, pressing, and 3D printing come together to turn industrial and household waste into items like multipurpose storage trays and boxes.

Even cooler is the circularity at the center of Supernovas’ business model. While conventional linear design sees a product live out its consumer lifecycle and then get thrown in the trash, Supernovas takes back products at the end of their useful lives and turns them into new objects. Their Streaming member program lets you swap out your purchase with something new of equal value whenever you feel like it, so you can try new things guilt-free. The idea is that the materials used to create these items never become waste, they simply shape-shift over and over again.

The Afterlife collection is currently available for pre-order. Both the bench (€1,674/$1992) and the crate (€400/$476) come in eight colorways, including vivid pink, black, speckled gray, terracotta, speckled black and white, blue, terracotta and white, and a mix of black, white, and terracotta. The pattern of colors is reminiscent of terrazzo, a unique look particular to the recycled materials.

Odd Matter was founded by Dutch designer Els Woldhek and Bulgarian designer Georgi Manassiev, who share a curiosity “for all things strange and wonderful” and a love for experimenting with different materials and processes. “The studio believes that by working with existing processes and notions and researching these from a different, more naive perspective, a different kind of product can be created,” they say. Products that are “unique and specific to the place they originate from.”

“Odd Matter’s design process starts from the materials, which then dictate the design and aesthetic,” says Supernovas founder Massimiliano Rossi. “The studio has an innate talent for colors and materials, making them the ideal partner to develop a product that transforms waste into beauty, and to bring functionality out of line.”

The post Afterlife: Easy-to-Assemble Furniture Made of Recycled Plastic first appeared on Dornob.

For simplicity’s sake, modular architecture is often a little boring. Modules have to be easy to assemble, transport, and stack, after all, so they generally consist of standard rectilinear shapes that end up looking pretty boxy once they’re set up on a building site. But Beijing and Boston-based firm People’s Architecture Office (PAO) does things a little differently, using prefabricated panels in a variety of shapes that allow for more creative assembly.

The results of each project made with the firm’s “Plugin House” parts are refreshingly creative, adapted for the individual needs and requirements of each particular occupant. The layout, shape, size, and color vary by project, with elements inspired by avant-garde European architects of the 1960s and 80s and the Japanese Metabolism architecture movement.

Introduced a few years ago, the Plugin concept is often used to revitalize dilapidated buildings, with the elements “plugging in” to the existing structures to provide living spaces with all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a modern home without requiring the demolition of the historic structures beside them. They’ve already been used to augment several of Beijing’s historic Hutong houses, making them habitable again.

In 2018, PAO collaborated with the Shenzhen Institute of Building Research to create “Lakeside Plugin Tower,” a particularly visually pleasing structure offering two spacious levels of living areas while barely touching the land upon which it sits. That makes it an environmentally sensitive option for the landscape, allowing it to leave behind very few signs of its presence when it’s ultimately dismantled and moved.

The research facility wanted to experiment with modern sustainable architecture that could occupy unused spaces around the country without necessarily developing them, leaving their usage flexible for future recreation, agriculture, wildlife habitats, and more. That way, more housing can be created to accommodate burgeoning populations and decrease some of the congestion in cities.

As you can see, the results are pretty impressive — and not boring in the least. The diagonal supports that lift the buildings up off the ground give them an open, dynamic feeling, and make it possible to stack the volumes offset from each other for interesting configurations. On top of that, the individual crate-like boxes that make up rooms within each home can be angled to take advantage of prime views, and their roofs can even be used as terraces.

The architects add: “The Plugin House demonstrates the possibilities of smaller, more sustainable living for contemporary urban landscapes. Cities across the US and Canada are adopting new policies that encourage homeowners to build small houses in their backyards as a way of providing much needed low-cost housing. Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) can generate supplemental rental income for homeowners, helping to counter NIMBYism and resistance to the densification of neighborhoods.”

“ADUs provide an alternative to the suburban expansion of cities. Through infill, new residents take advantage of existing infrastructure, public services, and community networks. While these policies are gaining momentum, the cost of building ADUs remains beyond the reach of most people. The Plugin House can potentially cut costs in half, making ADUs an affordable housing option.”

The post Lakeside Plugin Tower: An Expandable Modular Prototype by PAO first appeared on Dornob.

If a peekaboo desk with compartments made just for your cat to lounge while you’re working isn’t quite expansive enough for your furry companion, perhaps the CATable 2.0 will do the trick. Cats always seem to want to plant themselves right on top of keyboards, paperwork and anything else that’s competing for our attention, not to mention climbing into luggage, cardboard boxes and any other cozy compartments they can manage to infiltrate, and this cat furniture set satisfies both instincts.

The newest set of modern cat-friendly furniture from LYCS architecture, CATable 2.0 is a modular set of cubic wooden blocks that can be stacked in all sorts of different ways to create a shelving system, room divider, tables and stools. Use one in place of a chair at your desk, or place it on top of your work surface as a tempting cat cubby.

The cubes have curving cut-outs in a variety of sizes and shapes. You could connect them so that the openings line up, creating passageways from one side of the room to the next. While they may be ideally shaped for the lounging comfort of felines, these irregularly-shaped niches could also be used to display all sorts of objects. Even if you’re not a cat owner, arranging the sculptural blocks to create custom furniture is fun, and this set provides all sorts of visual possibilities.

“What’s hidden in your drawers? What kind of books would you put up on your shelf? For the same piece of furniture, we might have a thousand answers out of a thousand people. Compare to the dazzling forms of the furniture, we have a lot more curiosity over these stories behind each one of them, because they are real, subtle and sometimes, dramatic.”

“Last year, we designed CATable 1.0 which provides us with a unique space to share with our kitties. This year, CATable 2.0 is no longer a proper-sized table. It consists of 4 pieces of cubic wooden module in exactly the same size. Each one has a particular path for cat to stroll, and the “remainder” space would be used up to the cat lover’s own need: you can use them directly as stools, or stacking them into tea table, short ark, or even book shelf. You are participating designing your own furniture and creating a unique wonderland for your cat.”

The Stackable table set from Peleg Design combines three table condiments into one attractive, space-saving object that looks more like a sculpture than an ordinary kitchen item.

Central to the set and appearing as the bottom ring of the stack is a flat bottomed jar of olive oil. Its angled opening makes it easy to pour without spilling, and a rustic cork stopper contrasts with the very modern look of the rest of the set.

The other two rings are salt and pepper shakers. Maybe having two separate shakers and a bottle just for olive oil doesn’t take up much space, but this brilliant design saves at least a bit of space while making a table look sophisticated and even a little playful. Though the design might appear a little gimmicky at first glance, it’s actually just as functional as a more conventional set, if not more so. The space-saving stackable nature of the set makes it easy to keep your kitchen organized, too.
Founded in 2004 by Shahar Peleg, Peleg Design is known for the playfulness of its products. You can find all sorts of goofy and fun modern housewares at their website, though this particular object appears to be sold out.
“The world of PELEG DESIGN revolves around three basic principles: functionality, aesthetics, and humor. It is a world motivated by continuous curiosity with the explicit purpose to transform what was once an average, been-there-done-that concept into an innovative and truly exciting experience.”
“The studio’s products are designed to be used in homes, offices and other living spaces. Beyond the product, Shahar provides the observer with a complete, all inclusive experience. Through optical illusions that stretch the limits and break conventions, he invites the viewer to take a closer look, revealing a fresh view of everyday products. The viewer is encouraged to discover that beyond the products’ functionality there is a surprising game of enchantment and humor to be seen.”

The post Three-Ring Service: Stackable 3-in-1 Condiment Holder first appeared on Dornob.

The shelf can be extended　vertically and vertically and horizontally by adding more chairs and tables, shifting the overall geometry and creating new relationships. The character of Oneness changes with use. As a low table and a chair it offers a relaxing space to people, but when stacked as a shelf it is a place for our everyday objects.”
“The multifunctional purpose and extendable system can enrich a variety of spaces from office to home, through its simple, combinable and modern form inspired by the fusion of East Asian and Scandinavian design. Oneness is light, built with a Finnish natural birch plywood to make it easy to move and encourage people to compose their own structures easily. The structure is fixed by connecting each element with a clip inserted in to small holes found on the corners of the chair and table. The chair also has a secret space. When the chair is turned upside down to make a shelf, it reveals a hidden space on the bottom of the back for books and other small objects.”

The post Adaptable Stacking Custom Furniture first appeared on Dornob.

The Y:Cube can be used individually or in modular multi-story developments. Built using mostly renewable materials, each unit measures 280 square feet and includes a bedroom, en-suite bathroom, and combined living room and kitchen area. The interior partition walls can be moved around to customize the space.

The units can be stacked vertically or placed side-by-side depending on the size and space available, and they’ll be paid for by a housing charity or local provider with rent as low as $205 per week. The homes are well insulated to reduce heating needs, and come with all necessary utilities like plumbing and electric built-in. Each unit has a projected 60-year lifespan.

Developed in collaboration with the YMCA, the Y:Cube has already been used in a pilot project of 36 units in the London Borough of Merton, stacked three-high and configured in a horseshoe shape around a garden. Additional complexes, including a 105-unit housing development, are in the works.

“The Y:Cube units are 26m² one-bed studios, for single occupancy, that arrive on site as self-contained units. Each unit is constructed in the factory with all the services already incorporated. Therefore, the water, heating and electricity can be easily connected to existing facilities or to other Y:Cubes already on site. This ‘plug and play’ approach results in a modular, demountable system of apartments that are perfectly designed for brownfield sites. Additional units can be added if needed and whole developments can be taken apart and rebuilt in new locations. This modern method of construction makes for a neighbourly, clean and quiet site.”

“Each unit is constructed from high quality, eco-efficient materials (primarily renewable timber) and can achieve the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 6. The factory conditions in which the pods are assembled ensure tolerances of 2mm, creating accommodation that is so well insulated that they require little or no heating, even in winter months. This presents further valuable savings as the cost of energy rises.”

Searching for a fast, economical, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing sleeping solution for festival goers, the designers at Compaan and Labeur developed a vision for a sort of ‘honeycomb hotel’ consisting of stacked hexagonal units that can be set up quickly and easily virtually anywhere. The design was selected as one of 16 projects winning the CICI 2014 innovation scholarship, and got off the ground within a year of its conception.

The designers started by talking to festival lovers about what they wanted and needed in temporary shelter, and then created cardboard models followed by a full-scale, functional wooden structure they named the B-AND-BEE. Each ‘cell’ fits a king-sized bed with room for several people to sleep along with luggage storage, a locker, a light and a power supply.

“A festival, event, camp, work placement, off camping, partying with distant friends, … Wherever it happens to be you can now enjoy sleeping in comfort. And a delightful difference! The practical, sturdy and comfortable bed units from B-and-Bee make it a quick and simple task to conjure up some comfortable accommodation. For just a day or permanently? One bed or an entire ‘bee hotel’? There is always the perfect B-and-Bee to suit your needs. This 100% Belgian product can be installed anywhere and is really comfortable.”

“Using the handy B-and-Bees it’s simple to offer or add sleeping accommodation. You can buy one or a number of sleeping units to give all your guests an innovative, comfortable and bee-rilliant sleeping experience. A B-and-Bee is actually even part of the fun! We bet you that some guests will come purely for this unique sleeping experience!”

The bed folds up into a comfortable lounge seat to create floor space for guests and standing up to change clothes. Tent-like doors roll up and down to control the amount of light and privacy needed, and the sides of the stacked units function as benches. The first six stacked units were presented to the public at DOK Ghent during the Ghent Festivities 2014, and is expected to come to a larger audience at other festivals in the near future.

The post Stackable Honeycomb Hotel Takes Comfy Lodging on the Go first appeared on Dornob.

Rectilinear shelves make it easy to organize and display objects in a variety of shapes, but thinking outside the box (literally) can lead to visuals that are refreshingly unexpected. The ROOM collection by Erik Olovsson and Kyuhyung Cho consists of pine modules with all sorts of cut-out shapes that can be stacked however you like, calling to mind a set of children’s wooden blocks.

The 25 stackable modules feature voids in the shapes of circles, ovals, triangles, arches, octagons and more. Fitting decorative objects into them is almost like a puzzle that challenges both aesthetic and practical considerations. Which shape shows off each object to the greatest effect?

The shapes inside each module are inspired by architecture and the shapes of certain objects they could hold, like rounded holes for bottles of wine and keyholes for small floral arrangements, but the options are only limited by the user’s imagination.

The blocks can be stacked into a typical bookcase arrangement, or in sculptural compositions that make the resulting piece of furniture just as much of a decorative object as the items contained within. You can buy these pieces on 1stDibs.

“Room Collection is a shelving system, various geometric voids inspired by architecture and the objects they can hold. When all the elements of ROOM are combined it forms either a long shelf or a tall cabinet with a variety of different graphical compositions. ROOM allows each user to pick their favorite elements to build up your own composition as a shelf, a table or just as a sculpture.”

Not the table-setting kind of flatware you are used to, these kitchen implements are a new breed of slim design. As space-saving strategies go it is hard to beat a flat-pack approach, but in this case the benefits go beyond storage, too.

When it comes to cumbersome kitchen accessories, packing flat means fitting things into dishwashers, too. Dubbed Formadables by the crowds supporting and advising the project over at Quirky, the series includes a cutting board, bowl, strainer, colander and grater.

They also form a spectrum of colors that calls out their connection visually while also helping the user keep track of them by function.

Quirky brings lots of other fun and creative products to life, too, many of which solve common problems around the house. “Raft,” by Maria Morrill, for instance, is a sink plug that eliminates the need to reach into funky water.

“Maria was grossed out having to stick her hands into the food and sharp silverware ridden sink while doing the dishes and was searching for something to help. She found lots of floating plugs for the bathtub, but nothing for the kitchen sink, so she designed one herself!”

“Bevel” by Kyle Dulan is a measuring cup and 8-cup mixing bowl with a built-in scraper so you can get every last drop off your mixing spoon.

“Kyle wanted to eliminate the need to strike your utensil on the side of a bowl, or have to dirty a second untensil (or your fingers) in order to clean off your spoon or spatula. Bevel solves the problem, and offers increased ease in the kitchen for children, the elderly, or the disabled.”

“A stapler is a stapler, right? Wrong. With a few tweaks, we designed one with a whole new level of utility. While a standard stapler’s reach is limited by its length, Align’s detachable base enables a user to staple materials of any size, from posters to sheets of cardboard.”

The post Flat Folding Tableware & Kitchen Items first appeared on Dornob.

Integrating a modern residence into a historic setting can be a tricky prospect, especially when taking a fresh approach with shapes and materials. Tato Architects created a striking home for a 1930s neighborhood in Japan that hits just the right balance, blending into its surroundings while taking on its own unique visual identity.

Tato Architects has a portfolio full of similar projects: fresh, airy, breezy and modern takes on Japanese residential architecture. They’re often full of unexpected shapes and forms, prioritizing both functionality and quality of life in a way that’s markedly different from Western architecture.

“Yo Shimada founded Tato Architects in 1997, after he graduated from KCUA. As a student, he completed a number of designs and build architecture projects at the school. Based in his home town of Kobe, Tato Architects undertakes projects throughout various locations in Japan. The projects are mainly private houses; however, in recent years the office has taken on assignments for interior and installation work as well. The ideology of the practice is to formulate positive outcomes through understanding the subtle conditions and constraints of everyday life, which exist within notions of place, culture and the ongoing history of architecture.”

The post Stacked Geometric House in Japan first appeared on Dornob.

Even in the smallest of homes, there are typically separate spaces for living, sleeping, and cooking. The Micro-House from Studio Liu Lubin features a series of modular rooms designed to give residents just enough space for their indoor movements like sitting, standing and lying down.

Each modular Micro-House is shaped a bit like a plus sign, with the interior shapes meant to act as simple furniture. Each Micro-House is a multi-functional (though, by most standards, incredibly small) home.

Although the individual unit can be used as a single room, multiple Micro-Houses can be grouped together to make a larger home or even a multi-family home. The units are light and easily moved, and once in place they can be assembled by hand.

The Micro-House, made of the ultra-light and very strong Fiber Reinforced Form Composite Structure, were designed to give private housing options in crowded Chinese cities. With a Micro-House community, the lines between shared and private housing would be blurred, but each unit would at least offer a tiny getaway with space for not much more than one person.

More from the architects

“The Micro-house is based on the minimum space people need for basic indoor movement, such as sitting, laying and standing. The form of the Micro-house is designed to act as a combination of furniture and architecture elements. When being rotated, the unit of the Micro house will shift its space which contains all kinds of housing activities, such as resting, working, washing and cooking, etc. The Micro house unit can not only be used as single- functional room, but also can be grouped together as a housing suite, or even residential cluster.”

“The main material of the Micro-house is the Fiber Reinforced Form Composite Structure, which is light but strong. In this case, the Micro-house unit can be easily lift and assembled by hand. For the convenience of transportation and replacement, the size of the unit is designed as the size of containers.”

The post Modular Rooms Stack Like Building Blocks to Make an Awesome House first appeared on Dornob.

It is generally easier to stack linear things – or so conventional wisdom goes. But what happens when you add just the tiniest twist – or tilt – to such traditional approaches? Things can get a little more complicated… and a lot more visually interesting.

Take, for example, a modular bookshelf design that’s still generally functional, but just off kilter enough to look extra cool.

These simple-seeming shelves address multiple issues at once: books are meant to lean, not stand straight, and stackable systems need to nest in order to work (which often means matching pieces on both top and bottom).

By adding just a few degrees via a slight extension on one side, all of these typical dilemmas are tackled, with gravity doing the work to keep your books safe and your shelves stacked. Designed by MicroWorks.

“4° (four degrees)
Bookshelves are flat, so if your collection is incomplete,
you have to put the books on an angle so they don’t collapse,
and as a result they bend and become damaged.
Because ‘4°’ leans on a 4 degree angle it allows gravity and math to protect your books,
leaving your unique bookshelf neat.
design: MicroWorks, 2006
material: MDF
status: prototypephoto (c) MicroWorks“
