Coercing polymers into a formerly impossible configuration, chemical engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have created a revolutionary new material that’s stronger than steel and lighter than plastic.

MIT professor Michael Strano and his team of researchers were able to defy decades of scientific studies by coaxing polymers, the building blocks of all plastics, out of their traditional chain shape into two-dimensional sheet orientations. By layering these molecular discs, the team was able to forge an ultra-strong, lightweight material they named 2DPA-1.

“Instead of making a spaghetti-like molecule, we can make a sheet-like molecular plane, where we get molecules to hook themselves together in two dimensions,” Strano explains in an MIT press release. “This mechanism happens spontaneously in solution, and after we synthesize the material, we can easily spin-coat thin films that are extraordinarily strong.”

Exactly how strong is this molecular arrangement? The researchers found that its elastic modulus (the amount of force required to deform a material) was four to six times greater than that of bulletproof glass, its yield strength (the amount of force needed to break the material) was twice as strong as steel, and its density was only one-sixth that of steel.

Another novel feature of 2DPA-1 is its gas impermeability. Other plastics are composed of coiled chains of polymers with gaps that allow gases to flow through. Strano likened them to a bowl of spaghetti noodles. He said with a large bowl of noodles, it’ll be hard to see the bottom of the bowl, but sauce added on top can still seep through all the way to the bottom because of the little pockets of space in between noodles.

The 2DPA-1 material is instead configured of monomers that lock together in unbreakable hydrogen bonds like like interlocking LEGO bricks, making it impossible for gases to leak through. The applications of this discovery could be wide reaching. One possibility could include creating ultra-thin coatings for anything covered in paint. For example, a layer of 2DPA-1 could significantly extend the life of a car’s paint job as it would prevent water and gases from getting through, keeping rust and rot at bay. It could also be employed as a coating for cell phones to make them virtually indestructible.

The uber-strong plastic could also radically change the construction market. Being twice as strong as steel, 2DPA-1 could replace traditional framing materials, allowing structures like bridges and skyscrapers to last much longer. That would reduce the carbon footprint of each new building, and save valuable resources from being used up as quickly.

“We don’t usually think of plastics as being something that you could use to support a building, but with this material, you can enable new things,” Strano adds. “It has very unusual properties and we’re very excited about that.”

Having filed two patents for 2DPA-1, the MIT team is now conducting more experiments on their remarkable 2D polymer sheets to discover what other types of innovative materials can be fashioned from its groundbreaking molecular form.

The post Scientists Create New Lightweight Plastic That’s Twice as Strong as Steel first appeared on Dornob.

Not so long ago, toting around a kayak meant you pretty much had to own a car, be physically capable of hoisting at least 40 pounds up onto your roof rack, and have a large area to store the thing when it’s not in use. But packable kayaks have come a long way in the last decade or so, from inflatables to modular setups that break down to the size of a large suitcase. These portable models all have their pros and cons, but they make it a lot easier for the average person to get out on the water (especially if you’re a city dweller with a small apartment who relies on public transit). Now, an Indiegogo campaign is raising funds for what might be the lightest kayak yet: the Pontos, which weighs a mere 7 pounds.

As you can see, the Pontos looks a lot like a tent in the shape of a kayak. It has a similar lightweight frame sheathed in waterproof nylon and an inflatable seat that closely resembles a sleeping pad. That was part of the inspiration behind this unique design. The creators wanted performance on the water and packability on land, perfect for traveling or impulsive paddles after work. And it doesn’t just fit inside your car – it fits in your closet, suitcase, and even your backpack, just one-third the size and weight of the next-smallest portable kayak when packed down.

“We believe that the benefits of outdoor recreation and a connection with nature should be available to everyone, and we’re here to help knock down some traditional barriers,” the creators write on Indiegogo. “For paddle sports, those barriers are often storing, transporting, and deploying your vessel. We’ve simplified all of these by combining the concept of a skin on frame boat with new durable lightweight materials. At just seven pounds, Pontos kayaks are far lighter than existing folding and inflatable kayak options, which weigh anywhere from 20 to 45+ pounds, and [they’re] more affordable, too! With a pack down size similar to a two person tent, Pontos is the first truly packable kayak.”

Naturally, a kayak this lightweight is designed for calm waters, not whitewater conditions. Those who prefer the latter will have to stick to their more conventional kits for now. But a good deal of thought has gone into the design to make it just as reliable and easy to use as a standard kayak. The lightweight carbon fiber frame, which consists of 18-inch sections connected with shock cord, gives the boat its structure. Once on the water, the “keel pole” presses the TPU-bonded nylon shell just enough into the water to provide excellent tracking. Other portable kayaks are often flat on the bottom, which causes fishtailing as you paddle.

The Pontos’ shell easily pulls over the assembled frame and zips along the top, so it takes just a few minutes to put it together. The 210 denier nylon used for the shell also has some advantages over the heavy plastic usually used for inflatable kayaks. Inflatables are generally hard to pack down to a small size and even harder to get completely dry after use, which makes them prone to developing mold. On top of that, inflatable packrafts also require an additional device for inflation – or a serious test of your lung capacity after a hike.

Currently, the Pontos is available for pre-order via Indiegogo for $497, a 13 percent discount off the expected retail price of $575. It comes in five shell styles in shades of beige, green, blue, and yellow. The crowdfunding campaign will raise funds to order the components and hire a team to finish production, and the boats are expected to ship by June.

The post At 7 Pounds, This Might Be the Lightest, Most Portable Kayak Ever first appeared on Dornob.

A unique corrugated plywood construction makes this timber table incredibly lightweight at just 9 kilograms (19 pounds), yet 200% stronger than solid spruce wood. ‘Ripple’ by designer Benjamin Hubert and Canadian manufacturer Corelam is made of birch aircraft plywood, using 70%-80% less material than a standard timber table.
The table is light enough to easily pick up and move around, with an incredibly slim profile, which saves a lot of resources not only in manufacturing but in shipping, as well. But despite its seeming fragility, the table can support a surprising amount of weight. It’s made by sandwiching layers of plywood together in a corrugating machine.

“Benjamin Hubert has designed the world’s lightest timber table as part of an internal studio research project into lightweight constructions. The table measures 2.5 meters long, 1 meter wide, and weighs just 9 kilograms. Made using 70-80% less material than a standard timber table, Ripple can be assembled and maneuvered by a single person.”
“The table’s impressive strength to weight ratio is enabled by an innovative production process of corrugating plywood for furniture through pressure lamination, which was developed by Benjamin Hubert with Canadian manufacturer Corelam. Ripple is made entirely from 3 ply 0.8mm birch aircraft plywood, a timber sourced only in Canada, where the table is manufactured.”
“The material is the same as that used in construction of the Hughes H-4 Hercules – popularly known as the “Spruce Goose” – the world’s largest all timber airplane. The strength of the material in combination with the unique lamination process means the edge of Ripple measures just 3.5mm. Ripple is minimal in its design language, employing a simple knockdown construction. The top surface is corrugated plywood overlaid by a flat sheet, and the A-frame legs are a sandwich construction of two corrugated plywood layers.”

Benjamin Hubert is also responsible for ‘Membrane,’ an ultralight chair made of a stretched 3D woven textile mesh over a lightweight steel and aluminum framework, weighing in at just 3 kilograms.
“We deliver technically demanding solutions that respond meaningfully to human behavioural trends. Membrane is a highly engineered, ultra-lightweight chair that resonates with the flexible needs of the home of the future. Informed by qualitative research into the sports industry, we created a visually iconic yet sustainable addition to ClassiCon’s portfolio.”

The post Ultralight Table Stronger Than Solid Wood first appeared on Dornob.

Measuring just 63.25 millimeters on its longest side and weighing a mere 100 grams with a lens attachment equipped, the NANO1 is also perfect for life on the road, where keeping weight down is an absolute must.

People under the age of 35 move more often than any other age group, whether they’re leaving the nest for the first time, graduating college, or starting a new household altogether. Instead of purchasing homes, young people often end up hopping from one rental to the next — a process that doesn’t exactly encourage the accumulation of belongings. Who wants to haul their heavy antique family heirlooms from one place to the next, year after year? The need for millennials to be mobile may also be driving a trend toward lightweight, modular home furnishings that are easy to pack up and move when the time comes.

Living spaces are also getting smaller, especially in urban centers, so furniture that transforms or serves more than one purpose is extra valuable. Why not take advantage of every available square inch of space? Beds, for example, typically hog the bulk of a room while being too low to the ground to offer much storage space underneath. Lucky for us all, a new design from Yeseul Jang, graduate of Ecole Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne (ÉCAL), is looking to fix that problem with a few simple tweaks.

The “Tiny Home Bed” is elevated on a platform to fit two levels of shelving underneath. Designed for students and other young people living in compact spaces or shared accommodations like dorms and group housing, the bed hides its built-in storage behind a pleated fabric curtain.

“Today, the number of people living in small dwellings is increasing due to limited housing capacity in urban spaces,” says Jang. “I have focused my project on the development of a storage bed for compact living. My objective was to develop a bed that was not only practical but also simple and aesthetically attractive because most of the space-saving furniture in the current market is quite massive and focuses on functional features such as foldable or transformable furniture.”

That gives the Tiny Home Bed not one but two major advantages: saving space while also being lightweight and easy to carry. It boasts a simple, airy wooden frame wrapped in polyester fabric that’s just large enough to fit a twin-sized mattress on top of. Underneath, there’s room for luggage, folded clothing, shoes, books, bins of personal care products, and whatever other items you like to keep handy. The curtain runs along a track system, and it can be opened almost all the way around to offer access from any angle.

The Tiny Home Bed also packs down small for moving, and it’s easy to assemble — two qualities Jang found crucial as she considered the lifestyle of her target customer. She cites the rise of single-person households in her native Seoul as inspiration for the project. Jang’s Master Course in Product Design at ÉCAL focuses on “the question of how design can soothe people with daily objects while maintaining the product value in markets from a business perspective.”

It’s easy to imagine a design like this becoming available at a retailer like IKEA in multiple sizes. After all, who doesn’t need more hidden storage space in the bedroom?

The post Tiny Home Bed: Compact Storage Furniture Designed for Millennials first appeared on Dornob.

The Mobile Rig is a nifty device that works in conjunction with your smartphone camera to help you produce some stunning creative shots seamlessly and professionally, even if you have almost no user experience. Eradicating the need for bulky equipment, the Mobile Rig is a lightweight and portable all-in-one setup, meaning you can carry it with you on your travels and whip it out whenever inspiration ignites that little lightbulb in your head!
Stuff Magazine has hailed the Mobile Rig as “a modular smartphone gimbal for life. More than a one-trick balance stick.”

What Features Does It Have?

The Mobile Rig comes with interchangeable lights, microphones, and a slew of other accessories guaranteed to transform your phone into a mobile studio. The rig’s integrated USB light comes with five settings, allowing you to control the color temperature and eliminate the distracting grain that sometimes shows up in low light! Plus, the light’s flexi-cable design gives you far more control than a standard fixed-position fixture, providing you the freedom to capture those especially powerful moments.
The mic reduces any unwanted sounds that your smartphone might pick up on, erasing the noise of windy turbulence, busy streets, etc. The Mobile Rig’s adjustable magnetic gimbal allows you to stabilize the camera and reliably focus on whatever you’re filming to achieve that million-dollar shot! For a controlled action shot, simply tighten the gimbal, or loosen it up for those smoother cinematic moments.
An adjustable handle makes for a more natural grip and gives you the freedom to move, while an integrated wireless trigger makes getting started quicker than ever, so you won’t miss a single second of the action! The smartphone mount also allows you to switch seamlessly between portrait, landscape, and selfie modes. To top it all off, the Mobile Rig comes complete with an integrated tabletop tripod so you can set up your shoot without ever having to hold the device, freeing your hands up to adjust your settings and position your lighting.

Who Are the Geniuses Behind It?

The Mobile Rig was developed by the same team behind the success of the original Kickstarter campaign for Smoovie. The group is entirely made up of experienced professionals, who are situated in both London and Hong Kong. Specializing in the creation of innovative, futuristic products, head product designer Alex Kalogroulis is the genius who led the Smoovie campaign to instant prosperity, and we expect equally great things from The Mobile Rig. Having worked on previous ingenious projects including sea scooters, electric bikes, and smart-touch kitchen gadgets, it’s safe to say that Alex has a pretty good reputation in his industry.
Utilizing feedback and creative criticism from the Kickstarter community, Alex has further simplified the setup and usability of the gimbal technology incorporated into the Mobile Rig, making the versatile device even easier to use!

How Can I Get My Hands on One?

People who camp are fully aware of the highs and lows of sleeping (and living) outdoors. For every spectacular sunset you marvel at from the campfire, there’s an early sunrise that shines straight through your tent and wakes you up. Then there’s the temperature issue — any seasoned camper will tell you how stuffy it can get in a tent overnight. And let’s not even mention rain.

Cue the Siesta4, a cool (literally) new tent that’s bringing comfort to campers everywhere.

Entrepreneurs from Australia, America, and England pooled their collective experience and passion for the outdoors in the form of Outback Logic, a company that would go on to partner with the top names in fabric, tent, and specialist coating design to develop the Siesta4, a one-of-a-kind heat-reflective, light-blocking tent. The four-person tent is capable of keeping out all the elements, including sand, dirt, sun, wind, and rain.

Gareth Price is the innovator behind the Siesta4, which Outback Logic says is made from “specially developed lightweight, durable, waterproof fly fabric that reflects infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light. Compared to typical nylon and polyester tents, the Siesta4 is dramatically cooler and darker inside when in direct sun.” The company says you’ll get plenty of sleep and wake up naturally in the Siesta4, rather than being woken up when the sun blasts in your face early in the morning.

The Siesta4 is made of a breathable polyester fabric, weighing in at just under 18 pounds and boasting 64 square feet of interior space and two vestibule areas for a total footprint of 96 square feet. The roof is five feet high at its peak, and the tent features two doors for easy access and ventilation. Set-up is easy, the designers swear. There are only four aluminum poles to assemble, and since you can store the Siesta4 with the inner tent clipped in, it’s a breeze to put up and put away. Just stake out the corners, and you’re all set.

Now, how do you stay cool and dry inside?

“Our unique design allows extra airflow between the fly and inner tent to keep you cooler in the sun and to help prevent condensation in cold weather,” the company explains.

Plus, the fly completely shades the inner tent. We personally love the fact that you can keep the Siesta4’s doors closed for privacy yet still have good airflow throughout the interior. Mesh vents in the tent’s walls and roof (with covers, of course) promote cross-ventilation, and you can adjust the door openings however you like to achieve the best circulation.

Then there are the optional fans. Yes, fans. Ultra-quiet 8-inch USB fans provide good airflow even when the tent’s doors are fully closed. They do this via a clever fabric duct that connects the inner tent wall to the fly.

As people who’ve experienced soggy nights camping in thunderstorms, we wanted to know how the Siesta4 would fare in bad weather. “The full-length fly and closable mesh give excellent protection when the weather turns nasty,” the company says. “It gives far better protection, in fact, than a three-season tent. We’ll even go so far as to claim the Siesta4 is the most versatile tent ever made!”

The Siesta4 sold out of a summer run earlier this year, though pre-orders are currently being taken for the next batch.

The post Siesta4: The Durable All-Weather Heat and Light-Blocking Tent first appeared on Dornob.

If you’d treated yourself to Tenkara‘s Mini Sawtooth or Mini Teton rod, you’d have been able to stash it in your glovebox or backpack, just in case of an opportunity such as this. Call it fishing on the fly, if you will.

The tiny, lightweight mini Tenkara fly fishing rods can go everywhere with you. At just over 1 ounce, you’ll not even realized you’re carrying one, and there’s no danger of poking someone’s eye out, as the clever rods collapse to just 10 inches.

Tenkara has this lightweight, compact fishing rod thing down pat. Even their regular rods are small of stature. But a 10-inch rod? How the heck does that work?

Well, the Mini Sawtooth has 15 sections and extends to an impressive 9 feet when you’re ready to fish. The Mini Teton comes with 20 sections, and that allows it to reach 12 feet when fully assembled.

The rods are precisely crafted from high-quality carbon fiber, and they come in a package with everything you need to fish: the rod, line, flies, line clips, rod sock and rod tube for carrying it safely. They even sport a lifetime warranty.

Both rods are small but mighty, and their size does not take anything away from their performance when you hit the banks and cast for those trout. They are recommended for catching fish up to two pounds.

The Tenkara rodmeisters explain that the mini rods come with an extra serving of finesse. “What makes these rods incredible is their ability to be precise and offer delicate presentations with an insane amount of feel,” they say. “You can literally feel your nymph bouncing along the river bed, and even when a little 6-inch trout hits your fly, you are able to detect the strike.” (We assume you fisher-people know what a nymph is here….)

They add that the flexibility and thin construction of the rod “offers a really unique casting experience.”

And just in case you’re not sure what to fish for with them, they say, “While we don’t recommend these rods for chasing pigs, they do great with your typical mountain stream conditions and are a great take-anywhere rod.”

Of course they should know. They are based out of Driggs, Idaho, and happily boast that “Within one hour of our headquarters we have some of the world’s best trout rivers and streams (but don’t tell anybody that).” They add that the state’s geography inspired them to devote themselves to the sport of fishing.

The Tenkara team do their best to pass along their passion for fishing and the outdoors to the rest of us. While we may not all be lucky enough to live in fish-rich Idaho, the mini rods make it easy to take advantage when a fishing opp presents itself, wherever we may be.

Industrial designers have picked up on the fact that a growing number of people don’t stay in one place for very long, and they’re responding with intelligent, portable solutions that can go virtually anywhere. But when will the big furniture makers catch up? A new modular system called LYNKO from Argentinian architect and designer Natalia Geci fills an obvious hole in the market so well, it looks like something that should be sold in a big box store like IKEA already. It’s totally ready for dorms, sublets, pied-à-terres, studio apartments and other living situations that don’t mesh well with big, bulky belongings.

Inspired by Geci’s own nomadic lifestyle, LINKO is a customizable system of metal frames connected by wooden hinges to create a virtually endless number of configurations. Accessories include mirrors, toothbrush or pen holders, leather or canvas pockets, shelves, hangers, fold-down tables, hooks, shoe organizers, bulletin boards, room dividers and many more small items you might need for storing and organizing stuff in your closet, bedroom, kitchen, office or kid’s playroom.

The modular approach lets you connect the various parts however you like, putting two or more kits together for even more possibilities. The metal frames come in three sizes, as do the wooden connectors, which are also used to add on the accessories or as rails for clothes and towels. The system can be put to work in any kind of room; use the pockets for paperwork in the office, beauty supplies in the bedroom or plates and tableware in the kitchen. There are even flat table surfaces that hook onto the wooden rails and fold flat when you don’t need them.

The valet-like structure has a minimalist look, keeping visual clutter to a minimum in cramped spaces, and the versatile modularity means you can swap the parts around whenever you want to create a new configuration, whether you’re bored with your current layout or need to make some changes for usability. Lamps clamp right onto the metal frames and they can even be used as trellises for houseplants. But perhaps the coolest part is the way it all packs down when you’re ready to move, fitting into a carrying bag with a shoulder strap.

The set intuitively responds to the trend of nomadic workers, particularly remote workers who avoid signing long leases so they can live anywhere in the world they like. The gig economy has led to an entire workforce that almost never steps foot into a company office, making them ‘location-independent’ so they can work wherever there’s wi-fi. This itinerant sort of lifestyle encourages travel and exploration and discourages owning too much stuff, especially heavy furniture. All signs point to this trend continuing skyward, so maybe we’ll soon see similar lightweight, portable furniture systems that are more accessible to the general public.

The post Furniture to Go: Modular System Made for Nomadic Households first appeared on Dornob.

When working with metal, designers usually have a difficult choice to make: the product can be lightweight or it can be strong. The Blade table from Alexander Purcell Rodrigues uses Mykon‘s aluminum honeycomb technology is an innovative product that manages to incorporate a lot of strength into a very thin table.

The honeycomb technology allows for an exceptionally high strength to weight ratio. As a result, the tabletop can be larger than you would expect without the need for central bracing.

Without the need for bracing, the Blade table’s design is very simple and streamlined. The tabletop is 82 inches long and just .43 inches thick, but it is remarkably strong.

The table is simply four legs and a tabletop that looks like it is floating slightly above the legs. Currently, the table is available in a polished aluminum finish only, but it will eventually be produced with stylish wood or lacquered tops.

“A revolutionary dining table named Blade is the first product from the groundbreaking collaboration between multi-award winning designer Alexander Purcell Rodrigues and Mykon – developers of unique aluminum honeycomb products. The elegant clean lines of the Blade table take advantage of the high-strength to weight ratio of aluminum honeycomb and new techniques in fabrication to create an impossibly thin and elegant table that has been reduced to its purest form.”

“The Blade table’s razor thin, high load bearing honeycomb core allows an 11mm thick top to span 2100mm with no cross bracing. The subtle edge details and delicate reveals combined with an intricately engineered leg assembly create a visual and material tension that forms a compelling impression of a surface that is simply floating in space.”

“The concept itself arose from an understanding of Mykon’s versatile honeycomb technology,” says Alexander Purcell Rodrigues. “By utilizing their fabrication methodologies I realized that we could create a table like no other. One where an ultra-thin tabletop was not only self-supporting it could become the sole structural element of the tables construction.”

“Collaborating with Mykon allowed me to combine their versatile honeycomb technology with their advanced engineering skillet and apply it to a polished piece of furniture with the aim of re-envisioning the ubiquitous dining table as a unique and timeless object. Blade is comprised of a series of slender elegant graceful forms that seemingly do not intersect. A sense of impossibility is created, by reducing a table to its purest form one of the most striking things about blade is how little of it there is.”

The post Aluminum Honeycomb Table is Strong & Light first appeared on Dornob.

When you’re taking thousands – or even hundreds of thousands – of pounds of equipment and passengers up into the air, you want to lighten the load in any way you can to save fuel. Virgin Atlantic commissioned British design firm MAP to come up with a new design for their in-flight meal trays. The reason for the redesign was twofold: to reduce the flight weight of the plane and to make the in-flight dining experience more like table service at a fancy restaurant on the ground.

MAP designers took some flights with Virgin Atlantic crews to see firsthand how flight attendants transport and serve meals on moving planes. They listened to flight crews and observed the serving process, then used the information to design and complete a $168 million redesign of the entire in-flight meal experience.

The airline’s meal trays have been reduced in size to take up approximately 25 percent less space on a flight. After the designers noticed that food was slipping around in the trays and becoming smooshed and scrambled, they added non-slip pads to keep every morsel in place. Each meal tray has a lip on it that hooks over the following tray so that when one tray is pulled out the next comes up to the edge of the cart. This way, the attendants don’t have to bend over and reach into the cart to retrieve the next meal.

Coffee and tea carafes were redesigned to be lifted from above, contributing to a greater efficiency of movement. The lids were also redesigned with molded text indicating what each one contains, preventing flight attendants from using unreliable methods like writing on the carafes with Sharpies.

The first-class meal service redesign was a little more involved; the designers created two-level serving trays which can snap together in a matter of seconds. The two-level tray lets the flight attendants serve a sandwich and a piece of cake at the same time, eliminating the need for an extra trip. Overall, the meal service redesign reduces the weight of each flight by approximately 291 pounds. That may not sound like much, but when you fly as much as Virgin Atlantic does, the weight savings add up to millions of dollars every year.

Grilo wanted to work with marble but realized that the weight of the material would present some practical challenges.

Initially trying – and then rejecting – a metal honeycomb structure, the designer eventually settled on a lightweight but very tough plastic substrate for the thin marble slices.

A small stone counterweight and leather strap help to both keep the tabletop in place and make it easier to move when necessary.
On its maiden voyage, this first-of-its-kind floating dome dwelling drifted lazily between Hamburg and Berlin and certainly made waves alongside Zendome‘s general release of Home Edition, its residential variant.

Set upon a platform of welded frame-hull construction, the Zendome Home Edition dome home blends elements of a basic dock (easy to attach a sailboat to, for instance) and an outdoor deck to compliment the PVC-and-aluminum living and sleeping zone.

Naturally stable due to its lightweight construction and low center of gravity, the all weather geodesic dome itself easily weathered its trip, though for longer cruises on more open waters (rather than peaceful rivers) it is hard to say how it would really hold up.

Still, while it might not have the sure footing or copious amenities of its land-based brethren, this water-going variant would certainly make for nice short stays and modest day drips up and down local canals … and besides, you can always take it down and reconstruct it on dry ground. With the ability to install a real wood burning stove, it sure looks like it would be plenty cozy enough for use in all sorts of settings.

“From now on ZENDOME is also available as the ZENDOME.20 Home-Edition for the exclusive Home & Garden area with multiple ways of possible use. Be it as a roof for the swimming pool, a temporary guest house, a garden house or simply a beautiful playhouse for the kids.”

“The frame system is constructed of powder coated galvanized steel with a strength of 2mm. 161 poles and junction discs are assembled following the easy to use colour coding of the Advanced Frame System (ADF-System). The membrane is made of all-weather welded Ferrari® material: Perfect for any given use.”

From winter weather-resistant, fireplace-equipped dwellings made for snowy mountainsides to meadow-worthy, naturally-ventilated residences, geodesic dome home designs have begun to take on ever more demanding and complex tasks.

Popularized as festival structures and event spaces, for everything from white weddings to corporate functions, flexible modular geodesic domes have enjoyed a rapid resurgence in recent years – and making them into habitable structures appears to be the latest frontier, with companies like Zendome leading the pack.

Some are simply shade structures used for covering pools or providing guest quarters and playhouse spaces for kids, but others come equipped with kitchens, bathrooms and other full-time-living amenities.

As off-the-grid, low-impact lodgings go, these kinds of frame-and-canvas structures are about as good as it gets. Lightweight and low impact, they can be quickly constructed between just one or two people and dismantled as easily and efficiently as well (not to mention: interconnected, extended and added to down the line).

The frameworks are constructed of galvanized power-coated steel, then wrapped in an all-weather membrane of PVC-coated polyester (both water-tight and flame-resistant). Starting at over $10,000, though, they are still anything but cheap.

What would be really neat to see, though, is a combination of their portable-but-large-scale and permanent-but-home-size applications – whole networks of interconnected rooms designed not just for events but for full-time dwelling, too. But there is time – after all, geodesics have a long history, and doubtless far further yet to travel:

“For centuries mankind has been searching for the perfect form. Around 600 BC the Pythagoreans tried to split up a sphere into smaller and smaller segments. The so gained Tetrahedron, cube and decahedron forms were further investigated and split up by the Greek Philosopher Plato in his Academy. The platonic geometric forms are still named after him (Tetrahedron, Icosahedron and Octahedron as well as the cube) and were presented as well as described in mathematical formulas by Euclid in his XIII book of elements (300 BC). With the help of these formulas Johannes Kepler was able to describe the orbital radius of the then known six planets by means of a certain combination of these five forms and their inner and outer spheres in his “Mysterium Cosmographicum” (1596).”

The post Zendome: A Lightweight Inflatable Version of the Geodesic Dome first appeared on Dornob.

To be fair, total weight is actually closer to sixteen and one-half pounds … but that includes a set of sleek chairs, a side table, a shelving unit and even a high-tech carpet to lay everything out on. How? With engineering ingenuity, new technology and ingenious components.

Clearly a play on words, the conceptual Light Room by Bram Greenen (recent graduate of the Utrecht School of Arts)?uses lightweight materials to make a point about sustainability and style.

In short: a little goes a long way, if we can find ways to lower the cost of high-end synthetic textiles and other hybrid alloys that make up this marvelous living room idea.

Knitted fabrics from nylon and silt to kevlar form much of what you see, with some tension cables, aluminum and fiberglass in the mix as well. Structure is emphasized not for aesthetic reasons but as a simple consequence of the goal: reducing how much physical stuff goes into the making of each object. Air, light and shadow fill the resulting voids.

The post 16-Pound Space: Futuristic Lightweight Living Room Layout first appeared on Dornob.

Concrete has a sometimes-bad reputation as a harsh, rigid, cold-to-the-touch and straight-edged material. Litracon is doing a great deal to change that image of concrete through a score of creative and sustainable applications for their patented light-transmitting concrete. Their product is literally see-through concrete, a contradiction in terms yet a reality ready to be built and designed with.

Filled with optical fibers that run from one end of a poured piece of concrete to the other, these prefabricated blocks and panels effectively transmit light from one side to the other. Colors and light remain remarkably consistent from end to end, but with a natural variation from the pouring process that actually softens the effects considerably.

The fibers can transmit light to over 50 feet and, as they occupy only a small percentage of the total concrete block or panel, they do not significantly effect the structural capabilities of the poured pieces.

One could imagine all kinds of artistic as well as functional applications for this new-and-improved form of concrete. Daylighting possibilities abound and all with potentially much lower heat loss and cost and with greater durability.

Perhaps best of all it puts another broad-ranging, highly versatile material choice in an architect’s or builder’s structural tool kit – what designers do with this solid-but-see-through substance ultimately will probably surprise us all.

More from the manufacturer

“World’s first commercially available transparent concrete Litracon Classic® is a combination of optical fibres and fine concrete. It can be produced as prefabricated building blocks. Due to the small size of the fibres, they blend into concrete becoming a component of the material like small pieces of aggregate. In this manner, the result is not only two materials – glass in concrete – mixed, but a third, new material, which is homogeneous in its inner structure and on its main surfaces as well. Litracon Classic® is a fully handmade product which results an exceptional and individual pattern of light in each piece. Litracon Classic® was listed among the most important inventions of year 2004 by TIME magazine.”

The post Did You Say See-Through Concrete?
