Two years after it went up on Craigslist with the simple description “runs, drives, stops, registered,” a 1948 Chevy bus became a bohemian hand-crafted home by the name of Ophelia. Freelance surf-craft builder Ryan Lovelace renovated the interior, which already featured a microbus extension on top, to make it a comfortable residence.

Over 2012 and 2013, Lovelace fitted the interior with built-in couches, a wood stove and a small kitchen. There’s a closet tucked into the back of the bus, and a rail running along the top row of windows holds potted plants.

The wood paneling inside was reclaimed from a demolition at director George Lucas’ house, acquired at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

Lovelace also built a wooden loft that he refers to as the ‘sleeping pod’ to the upper back portion of the bus, with a large window that provides views out onto whatever landscape he chooses to live in at the time.

The post Rolling Home: 1948 Bus Remodeled into Handcrafted Abode first appeared on Dornob.

When you think of double-decker buses, you most likely picture the large, bright red ones driving down the streets of London. You probably don’t think of them as potential overnight accommodations, or hot vacation destinations.

Well think again. When Adam Collier-Woods, a U.K. based carpenter, discovered that one of these behemoths was en route to the scrap yard, he decided to put his skill and creativity into repurposing it as a destination for vacationers looking to have a unique, relaxing retro experience.

While on a drive through the countryside, Collier-Woods saw a decaying bus in a field and was immediately inspired to transform his own double-decker bus into, to paraphrase Monty Python’s Flying Circus, “something completely different.” After purchasing one on Ebay for £4,500, he spent over half a year renovating the enormous bus, documenting the entire process on a local television station.

Built in 1982, Collier-Woods’ bus ended its career after clocking nearly 700,000 miles on the odometer. Hoping to evoke an air of nostalgia for those who may have taken a similar bus to school when they were children, he placed a strong emphasis on keeping as much of the original structure and features as intact as he could, including the steering wheel, driver’s seat, and select other seats. Throughout his renovations, Collier-Woods also sought to keep the interior design retro, taking great care to procure matching furnishings and paint to create the perfect bright, nostalgic vibe. That included keeping the bus’s original bright green exterior. Finding the project “one massive recycling exercise,” Collier-Woods was able to put his skills as a carpenter to good use devising what is now known as the “Big Green Bus.”

Now located on a campsite in East Sussex, the bus is available to rent and can sleep up to six people. Nestled in an idyllic forest setting, holiday makers should prepare to max and relax (and unplug, as there’s no Wi-Fi) around the bus’s picnic area, heated outdoor shower, and outdoor hot tub. Inside, features such as a full kitchen (including stove), a log burning stove for warmth and coziness, comfy beds and seating areas, and the funkiest electric lime green decor make the former transport vehicle both comfortable and stylish.

If you feel like venturing out and exploring the surrounding area, there are plenty of things to do in East Sussex. And if you want to just kick back in the bus and dig those funky vibes the whole trip, you’ll have almost as much to do. A lounge area toward the front of the bus contains board games, and there are also plenty of books laying around in case you want to pretend you’re cruising through the forest while lounging on one of the Big Green Bus’s original seats.

With amazing views, luxe accommodations, kitschy design, and a bit of nostalgia, the Big Green Bus is sure to delight guests who want a cozy cottage experience in a unique, retro setting. Learn more about it here by taking an online tour of the bus and its beautiful surroundings.

The post The Big Green Bus: See How a Carpenter Transformed This Double Decker Into a Hip Retro Vacation Spot first appeared on Dornob.

In Studio Ghibli’s beloved 1988 Japanese animated fantasy film My Neighbor Totoro, the titular character Totoro is an adorable furry giant who lives in the forest. An important scene in the film features him encountering the film’s human protagonist, Mei, at a bus stop, where he holds a green leaf over his head to hide from the rain. She in turn offers him her red umbrella, and he gives her a gift of acorns wrapped in a bamboo leaf to plant.

Now, kids (and kids at heart) all over Japan can travel to a recreation of this heartwarming scene in the rural town of Takaharu, Miyazaki Prefecture, where a “life-sized” Totoro stands waiting at a (fake) bus stop. A couple marking the milestone of turning 70 years old wanted to celebrate by creating the attraction for their grandchildren, as well as other children who might derive joy from seeing the cuddly replica.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="" title="Tonari no Totoro Bus Stop - In Progress shots " src="https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/cimg/www.dornob.com/700x394_85/66/Totoro-bus-stop-in-progress-607066.jpg" alt="Shots of the large Totoro replica being built from scratch.
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="" title="Tonari no Totoro Bus Stop - In Progress shots " src="https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/cimg/www.dornob.com/700x525_85/69/Grandparents-Making-Totoro-Bus-Stop-607069.jpg" alt="Shots of the large Totoro replica being built from scratch.

The grandfather, who worked as a plasterer for 50 years, started by creating a wooden barrel as the base and layering cement on it. His wife and other elders from the neighborhood helped smooth out the surface and add details like the pointy ears, whiskers, and big round belly. They then set their replica on a bed of gravel and bricks on their own private property, placing a bus stop sign directly beside it. They have since installed a “fortune telling” vending machine in the area and begun renting out red umbrellas as photo props.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BpsnamZltuR/?utm_source=ig_embed

Naturally, it wasn’t very long before the installation started to draw visitors. The couple’s grandkids loved it, and so did just about everyone who learned of its existence. It quickly became such a big tourist attraction, the local town authorities had to release guidelines about respectfully visiting it, going so far as to recommend convenient guest houses located nearby. They even added three parking spaces so multiple people can visit at once to try out their best poses and post their photos on social media.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BpRqRaSgUEU/?utm_source=ig_embed

The couple’s hard work helped bring the magic of the film to life, and the result is undeniably adorable. It’s no wonder Totoro fans from all over the world are starting to make their way there.

Totoro himself is inspired by legendary creatures called Koropokkuru from the Ainu tales of Japanese folklore. Unlike Totoro though, they’re not furry creatures, but rather tiny humans. Their name means “people below the leaves of the Fuki” in the Ainu language, and as the story goes, they were the original inhabitants of the northern Japanese islands. Short, agile, and skilled at fishing, they are often depicted holding leaves over their heads.

If you want to visit the Tonari no Totoro Bus Stop yourself, it’s marked on Google Maps at 7538-6 Kamamuta, Takaharu, Nishimorokata District, Miyazaki 889-4414, Japan. You’re welcome to give him a hug and take your photos between 8 am and 6 pm each and every day.

Are you a big Studio Ghibli fan? You’ll love the artwork of Japanese artist Monokubo, who creates fantastical digital paintings featuring friendly oversized animals like wolves, cats, foxes, and birds, all of whom similarly watch over, protect, and play with their human companions.

The post Japanese Couple Builds Totoro-Inspired Bus Stop for Their Grandkids first appeared on Dornob.

A mini replica of the iconic Bauhaus school building in Dessau, Germany is now on the move, exploring the legacy of one of the world’s most influential architecture movements.

Created in bus form by SAVVY Contemporary for the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus, this small-scale clone of the original Dessau Bauhaus building’s workshop wing contains both a 15-square-meter apartment and an exhibition space. But this project, entitled Spinning Triangles, represents much more than just a centennial celebration. Its intention is to dive into how Bauhaus became not just a solution, but also a problem, spreading and imposing Western concepts of modernity all around the world.

First, a quick background. Founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar, Germany in 1919 as a new type of art that made no distinction between form and function, Bauhaus relocated to Dessau and took on a bold form of its own to reflect its distinct values, housing workshops within a three-story wing with glass curtain wall facades. Establishing its architecture department in 1927, the school operated in Dessau until 1932, when it was forced to close by the Nazi Party, at which point it moved to Berlin under new director Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The original school facility was bombed during World War II and only fully restored in the 1990s.

The experimental school didn’t just spawn an architectural style and philosophy — it practically defined what modernity looks like globally as its professors and visionaries left Germany, taking their ideas with them wherever they went. As people from Northern and Western cultures sought to “civilize” developing countries, the Bauhaus aesthetic arguably uprooted and replaced those of many native cultures, increasingly forcing indigenous peoples to ignore their own values and ideas along the way.

Founded by Berlin-based architect Van Bo Le-Mentzel, the Spinning Triangles group hopes to use the Bauhaus bus to develop a new collective interpretation of the school’s teachings alongside people from those colonized nations. The bus will travel between Dessau, Kinshasa, Berlin, and Hong Kong, inviting guests to “question the complex heritage of modernity.”

The team adds: “Five ‘masters’ will export this ‘school’ to Berlin, where forty students will learn and unlearn, presuming nonchalantly that it may not be the South that needs development but the North. Regular open school days and a continuous program with invited guest lecturers allow the participation of the public. Thus, words and actions aim to challenge and transform Bauhaus traditions and narratives of modernity and modernism.”

“Design has power. It creates our environments, our interactions, our being in the world. For too long, practices and narratives from the global South have been kept at the periphery of the design discourse, been ignored altogether, or appropriated. This needs to change. And it can only do so if we start with new forms of learning and unlearning, that may perhaps actually be very old, but have certainly been overheard for far too long.”

It’s a worthy cause, and the “Wohnsmaschine” Bauhaus bus is certainly a wonder in its own right, particularly in the way it scaled down the entire facade of the original building to the size of a tiny house.

The post Bauhaus Bus Takes Iconic Architecture on the Road first appeared on Dornob.

It features seven beds, a living room area and a restroom and would theoretically fit into typical mobile home parks, though finding dealers with parts for sale might be a bit trickier to keep the finished buses on the move.

This bus housing concept is an intentionally non-radical work of construction, requiring no contractor or elaborate plans to be built — just a group of people who wish to turn an ordinary vehicle into a multi-person housing unit on wheels. The value is in the labor, not the design — and forget about estates or land prices.

Professor Antonas contends that architects often over-complicate issues of design, layering form upon concept upon meaning without simply looking at what is in front of them and how few changes could make it work in a new way. Instead of starting with a site and building on examples from a given typology, he proses stripping an existing object bare and filling it in as needed – neither radically new nor conventional as an approach to remodeling a space or structure. It’s a refreshing approach, particularly in regards to urgent housing needs, if it were to be applied to communities like the homeless and refugees.

“Typical banal elements show us already how to interact with them,” says the designer. “The beds, the sofa, the water closet, the shower, the small wardrobes, the bookcases already speak about a particular type of stay in which we know how to behave. They are all elements of a given functionalism, traditional now originated from modernism.”

The post Double-Decker Converted Bus Community first appeared on Dornob.

In spite of its good intentions, charity can sometimes feel like it’s being put on top of people, forcing them to provide the help that an organization thinks its recipients need.

Lava Mae gets to the heart of important issues, though, providing showers and personal hygiene products to people living on the streets around the world. Dignity and self-worth are the core messages Lava Mae shares as it helps people access these most basic of human needs and comforts.

“Lava Mae brings critical services to the streets, delivered with Radical Hospitality, to restore dignity, rekindle optimism, and fuel a sense of opportunity,” the nonprofit explains on its website. “Our audacious goal is to unleash a Radical Hospitality Revolution around the world.”
CNN Hero Doniece Sandoval started Lava Mae in San Francisco back in 2013. She noticed more and more people sleeping on the streets of San Francisco as the city became an increasingly expensive place to live due to the tech industry boom, which skyrocketed real estate prices and sped up the gentrification process.

CNN reported that Sandoval was shocked when she found that there were less than 20 shower stalls and toilets for the thousands of homeless people in the city. “For the homeless community, it was the equivalent of being in a third-world country,” she told CNN.

The organization converted retired city buses into mobile shower units that could give people easy access to their services, and it also hands out hygiene kits, packs of new underwear, and comfortable pairs of socks.
Now Lava Mae provides outreach in Los Angeles, too, and it’s developed a kit to make it easy for people in other cities and countries to set up their own mobile shower projects for their communities. The “BuildIt” kit provides specifications for building mobile shower trailers and includes talking points to examine before launching a project. Lava Mae even helps connect new service providers with local partners, volunteers, and donors.

“We pilot, test, and refine new programs and share what we’ve learned with the world,” the nonprofit says, adding that it “forges creative partnerships across sectors to radically increase access to services and better meet [its] guests’ needs.”

Human connection and dignity are paramount in all of Lava Mae’s work, and in the list of ways in which people can help, it’s noteworthy that the first suggestion the organization provides is “Acknowledge: Simply making eye contact and even smiling at those you pass on the street is a good first step. It makes a difference when people are seen rather than ignored.”

Other ways that individuals and corporations can help are by donating supplies for hygiene kits like toothbrushes and soap or volunteering at one of Lava Mae’s locations.
In addition to the mobile showers, Lava Mae runs pop-up “care villages” to give homeless people easy access to checkups and treatment from doctors and dentists as well as a good haircut, a clean set of clothes, and the chance to talk with a lawyer if they need legal advice.

Lava Mae has served more than 4,000 individuals, provided 20,000-plus showers on its mobile units, and raised global awareness about the homeless community’s lack of access to basic hygiene.

The post Lava Mae Converts Buses into Mobile Showers for Homeless People first appeared on Dornob.

Once you have used a multimodal transit center in a major city, you start looking for that convenience in every city. Sadly, that option does not exist in most. In many cities, there is one bus terminal for mass transit, another for inter-city buses, a commuter train station, and an inter-city train station. San Francisco is hoping to eliminate all these extra degrees of transportation separation with the Salesforce Transit Center, a multimodal hub for municipal and inter-city buses.

The first phase of this $2.3 billion project was just completed in August of 2018, connecting the city’s new Salesforce Tower to the transit center itself. Of course, Salesforce is also financially connected to the project. The company pitched in $110 million to have their name put on the transit center — a practice more commonly seen with sports arenas and stadiums. Nonetheless, the Salesforce Transit Center is very much a public building.

The idea for the transit center was first proposed in 1999, followed by 10 years of planning and another 10 of construction. The underground concourse will be for Caltrains, with municipal buses running through the ground floor and regional buses the second. A 5.4-acre-linear rooftop park will be used to top the whole thing off. Buses can access the center directly via a bridge on the second floor bridge, which will effectively keep them off of surrounding city streets. The choreography of how this works is a lesson is shared transportation spaces.

The exterior of the building is a rhythmic façade of aluminum panels, with perforations allowing natural light to pierce deep into the building all throughout. From the street, the building’s inner white columns can barely be seen through the screens, stretching out at all kinds of angles to support the roof. Still, the first true impression of the interior comes in the form of a spacious 125-foot high central hall. The building was designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, while PWP Landscape Architecture was responsible for designing the linear park above.

Spanning five city blocks and a ton of connecting stations, the transit center will soon be a focal point and social gathering place for everyone in downtown San Francisco. The site of the park was in desperate need of good public space, and now, it’ll contain a playground, a 1,000-seat amphitheatre, a picnic area, and a café. Any mechanical systems coming out of the center’s roof will be hidden away behind berms in the park.

Some people see the Salesforce Transit Center as the “Grand Central Station of the west,” comparing it to the historic New York City train station made famous in film and television. In reality, the new hub is more akin to the inverse of New York’s Penn Station, a monumental neoclassical gem that was demolished in 1963 and replaced with Madison Square Garden. Today Penn Station exists beneath the arena, a situation that led one leading architecture historian to famously say: “one entered the city like a god. Perhaps it was really too much. One scuttles in now like a rat.” At the old San Francisco Transbay Terminal, the opposite is true. The old one scuttled in like a rat, but the new one enters triumphantly like a royal.

The post The Salesforce Transit Center is Making Commuting More Enjoyable first appeared on Dornob.

A high demand for electric buses in China has been making the country’s air significantly cleaner in recent months. As the world leader in the manufacture of electric buses, China (a country often seen as one of the largest polluters on the planet) will actually be helping cities all over the world clean their air before long. As more North American and European cities strive to meet their zero-emissions targets with respect to their public transportation systems, they will have to start turning to electric buses.
According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, of the approximately 385,000 electric buses being run around the world in 2017, 99 percent of them were run in China. By contrast, the European country with the most electric buses in operation was the Netherlands, with just under 300 (around the same amount as the U.S.). Electric buses make up 17 percent of all buses in China, and about 9,500 new buses are added to that figure each and every month. In 2017 alone, almost 90,000 electric buses were sold in China. Collectively, the electric buses in use today have saved some 279,000 barrels of oil from being used.

Why is China so enthusiastic about promoting the use of electric buses on the streets of its cities? Mainly out of fear of social unrest. Many Chinese cities are blanketed by such appallingly polluted air that it eventually becomes a political issue for local authorities to deal with. Ultimately, the demand for purer air in China manifested as an abundance of electric buses on the roads. More than enough to keep the people happy.
By 2025, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and 12 other cities plan to exclusively rely on electric buses to make up their fleets, retrofitting existing vehicles to help them meet new sustainability standards. China’s own Shenzhen had an all-electric fleet put together by the end of 2017. This 16,000-bus fleet is so large that it trumps the number of electric buses in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago combined. One of the top manufacturers of electric buses, Build Your Dreams (BYD), is even based in Shenzhen, making it the perfect model for other cities to follow.

90 percent of the buses in Stockholm are electric, and some of them are even charged wirelessly. In comparison, American cities are transitioning to electric buses at a much slower rate. In August of 2018, Stockton, California became the first city in the country to establish an all-electric bus route. Of course, that’s still just one route in one city. Not quite the momentum you would expect for a country hoping to meet lofty sustainability goals in the next several years, but it is a start. Other cities in the U.S. like Las Vegas have started testing driverless electric buses.

The high cost of electric buses is what keeps many American cities from integrating them more completely into their systems, but like that of solar panels, these costs will probably diminish over time. Ironically, the country that many would see as the most unlikely promoter of clean urban air will soon become the world’s main supplier of vehicles that achieve exactly that.

The post Electric Buses Are Making Your City’s Air Cleaner Than You Think first appeared on Dornob.

China has been leading the way in new technologies for some time now. This vast nation has pioneered some of the smartest developments in the battle against climate change, and they’re also at the forefront of the technological revolution taking place in the automotive industry. It’s rare these days that tales of driverless cars and electric forms of public transport are not making headlines, but China has once again proven that it is most definitely a world leader in the field of intelligent vehicle design.

While much is made of self-driving prototypes (some of which has even been road tested), China’s new public transport system is truly innovative. A step ahead of all current forms of public transportation, it combines elements of the city’s train, bus, and tram systems. Developers are calling it the “rail bus,” and it just made its first journey in the Chinese city of Zhuzhou this past October.

While this is not the first time a driverless form of public transportation has been floated or even tested in the public sphere, the “rail bus” is different in that it runs completely independent of any fixed track. Both trains and trams run on tracks, and electric buses are guided by overhead cables, but the “rail bus” finds its way around the city using painted markings on the road. Special sensors on the underside of the bus scan the markings as they pass, directing the vehicle onward and eliminating the need for a driver altogether. Of course, as a safety precaution, the front of the rail bus has been designed with a driver’s cabin in the event of an emergency. On the bus’ first real journey in October, a driver went along with the vehicle just in case.

The design was first unveiled last July by the Chinese transport company CRRC, who lauded the fact that the rail bus was more eco-friendly and cheaper to run than current transport systems operating in Zhuzhou. The city suffers from severe traffic congestion, and it’s hoped that the rail bus will contribute to alleviating some of it, especially since it runs above ground, which allows it to operate on the existing infrastructure and only requires the painting of transmission markings in the streets. By contrast, a new subway system would cause major disruption and be a lot more expensive to install. The cost of the entire system is estimated to be at about 80 percent of what a subway system would cost.

The route trialed in October was 3.1 kilometers in length and broken up by four stops. The fact that the vehicle is electric means that it can run for 40 kilometers on a single charge. Each vehicle measures 30 meters in length and would be replaced after about 25 years of use. Its maximum velocity will be approximately 70 kilometers per hour. It’s expected to start running full-time in 2018, with each bus being able to accommodate as many as 500 people at a time.

Dornob recently profiled another self-driving vehicle. You can check it out here.

The post Driverless “Rail Buses” Now Running in China first appeared on Dornob.

It seems like every week now there are new announcements of futuristic models that will no longer require gas or people to operate them. Going beyond personal vehicles, there has also been talk of driverless buses, trains, and trams. In that vein, British automotive designer Jonny Culkin has devised a new kind of public transport for people living in London — one that would provide an alternative to the iconic “Tube,” which is known for the aloofness of its passengers and its absence of connection with the world above.

Culkin’s new creation is a small-scale version of London’s famed Routemaster bus, which has earned a place in cultural and design history thanks to its hop-on, hop-off feature (something that is often characterized by the opening at the rear of the bus). The original Routemaster was out of circulation for many years, until it was given a new lease of life by the famed British designer Thomas Heatherwick a few years ago. Culkin’s design takes the concept of the Routemaster and reimagines it for a public that has lost touch with its surroundings after years of commuting on the London Underground.

Culkin’s “Mini Routemaster” would be a self-driving pod that takes the rectangular form of a bus but is much smaller in size. Deeming his creation “technology with a friendly face,” the designer feels that Londoners would be more comfortable boarding a new type of vehicle if its presence was at least somewhat familiar. Something that’s too futuristic might be initially off-putting to travelers, he argues. The vehicle would have large areas of glazing all around it to allow passengers to see where they’re going and experience the city in a more connected manner, rather than being shuttled underground from one place to another and then spat out in a completely different context, as can happen with the Tube.

Structurally, the vehicle would be made up of a carbon-composite internal frame enveloped by a glass-like polycarbonate outer shell. The Mini Routemaster would be powered by a battery pack on its underside, which would allow the cabin to be smaller, as most conventional vehicles need significant space in the front for the engine. Eliminating the need for the engine would also free up more space inside the vehicle and permit more passengers to board at one time.

To make the vehicle even more sustainable, the Mini Routemaster’s poles, railings, and shelves for baggage would all be made from recycled newspaper waste — an important feature considering the fact that London controversially produces nearly 10 tons of paper waste a day. Seating would be made from durable Kvadrat fabric, and the floor surface would be made of a material reconstituted from recycled teabags.

The designer says, “Autonomy and electrification offer the chance to create new types of transport and experiences; there hasn’t been such a technological shift since we first went from horses to cars. It’s a chance to reimagine public transport so its better suited to a more human-centric city — one that is less congested, greener, and generally a better place to be.”

The post The Mini RouteMaster Self-Driving Bus first appeared on Dornob.

As a way of relentlessly teasing the fans who have been hoping for a re-release since the 70s, Volkswagen has shared not one, not two, but five Microbus concepts since 2001. The worst part is, none of these designs have actually gone into production. The plucky and practical VW Microbus made its debut in 1950 and would go on to become a symbol of the 1960s counterculture. In the decades that followed, used buses would get snatched up almost as soon as they hit the secondhand vehicle market. Then came “Dieselgate,” a controversy over Volkswagen’s alleged attempts to hide the amount of environmental damage its vehicles were causing, which led to a serious slump in the company’s American sales market.

In an effort to put that mess behind them and return to their former glory, it looks like Volkswagen is finally making the modern Microbus a reality, and it’s literally going to be electric. Released in January at the Detroit Auto Show, the company’s newest concept, which they’re calling the “I.D. Buzz,” initially seemed like just another prototype that would be hyped but never hit the market. That all changed in June, when the automaker revealed that the I.D. Buzz EV would be available to the public within the next few years, possibly even by 2020.

Volkswagen’s chairman of the board, Herbert Diess, has since confirmed this news in an interview with Auto Express. According to the chairman, the bus’s iconic frame was quite difficult to reconcile with modern engines. Switching to electric made it possible for the company to both retain the vehicle’s original proportions and equip it with an abundance of interior space. I.D. Buzz is expected to have a driving range of around 300 miles. “We would like to bring this back because it fits so well to what the brand stands for: it’s emotional, it has functionality, it makes your life easier,” Diess explains.

In keeping with its predecessor, the I.D. Buzz will feature the iconic two-tone paint job, blunt nose, and large VW logo. Don’t be fooled by its vintage exterior — this car’s also got 21st-century style. I.D. Buzz boasts oversized 22-inch wheels, wrap-around LED lights, and a luxurious interior you’d expect to find in a modern vehicle. The cabin has a lounge-style layout and incorporates eight seats, many of which can be reclined, adjusted, or transformed into tables and beds. A skylight in the ceiling makes the interior even more pleasant to hang out in.

The driver’s seat can swivel a full 180 degrees so that everyone can face each other and have a good time together, just like in the Microbus days of yore. Of course, that’s not the only reason Volkswagen included this feature. The chair has been programmed to automatically turn around the moment you engage the car’s autonomous I.D. Pilot mode, in which the I.D. Buzz does all the driving for you. Still, we wouldn’t count on a self-driving version of the car coming out until sometime around 2025. For now, we’ll take the hang-out space!

Users will be able to control air conditioning, music, and GPS all from the car’s augmented reality display and removable portrait tablet. When it’s the I.D. Buzz’ turn to drive, its squared-off steering wheel will retreat into the dashboard. The culmination of these modern features is a remarkably smooth, spaceship-like interface that wastes no room on superfluous switches and knobs. Taking a page out of the Tesla Model X’s book, the bus’ battery pack has been mounted flat into the floor and takes just 30 minutes of wireless charging to reach 80 percent of its total lifespan. The I.D. Buzz EV will receive 369 horsepower from its electric motors and be able to go from zero to 60 mph in five seconds flat.

The post Volkswagen is Bringing Back the Microbus (For Real This Time) first appeared on Dornob.

While most bus conversions cover up the existing windows to make the most of the space, architecture student Hank Butitta took a different approach, leaving them open while installing multi-purpose, transforming built-ins for a bright and highly functional interior. Documenting the process on his website ‘Hank Bought a Bus,‘ Butitta created a 225-square-foot tiny house packed with plenty of places to sleep, lounge, work and cook.

For his Masters Final Project, Butitta wanted an opportunity to explore the details of a full-scale building project in a physical, hands-on way. While bus conversions are nothing new, he saw potential to craft the interior in a way that hasn’t been done before.

Purchasing the bus on Craigslist for $3,000, Butitta spent another $6,000 stripping the bus down, installing electrical wiring, adding plywood walls and building out all of the furniture. Since the windows are all evenly spaced, he used them to create modular units of 28 inches square, grouped into four primary zones: bathroom, kitchen, seating and sleeping.

Twin beds toward the front of the bus can be folded out for additional sleeping space, and conceal storage for clothes and shoes. Bench seating in the center also folds out into a large lounge area that can accommodate groups. Translucent insulated panels pull up from behind the built-in furniture to cover the windows when needed, and the emergency hatches were converted to skylights. Dimmable rope lighting was installed where the walls meet the curing ceiling.

The whole process of completing this converted bus house took about 15 weeks to complete. Says Butitta, “I also thought it was important to demonstrate the value of full scale iteration in architectural eduction. There are too many architecture students who don’t understand basic physical limitations of materials or how they can be joined. This project was a way to show how building a small structure withs imple detailing can be more valuable than drawing a complex project that is theoretical and poorly understood.”

The post Bus Converted to Bright Tiny House first appeared on Dornob.

Clearly inspired by the VW bus, a new electric car concept brings this classic into a new era with power generating capabilities, panoramic windows and extra safety features for the modern wanderer’s lifestyle.

The Nimbus by Eduardo Galvanis has four driving modes for four different kinds of trips: the energy saver for city driving, standard mode, faster cruise and four-wheel drive. Its electrical engine works parallel to a micro combustion generator to recharge its own lithium-ion batteries, and part of the exterior is covered in solar cells. A regenerative brake mechanism enables the car to capture and convert kinetic energy for additional power.

A multi-function convex dashboard adds GPS and a touchscreen for internet services, maintenance alerts, and control of the sound system, interior lights and air conditioning.
This unusual bus stop looks a bit like it has a parasitic growth protruding from its side. It is, in fact, an urban intervention by Portuguese firm Like Architects.

The project is called Bus Stop Symbiosis, and symbiosis is a better word than parasitic to describe the relationship between the existing structure and the added undulating one.

In a symbiotic relationship, it is possible for both organisms to benefit. The vaguely worm-like red wood fiber/resin addition benefits by entertaining passers-by and giving them a place to sit.

The bus stop benefits because the urban art installation provides them with an interesting object to study while they wait for the bus – most of them, no doubt, wondering what this weird curvy thing might be.

Installed as a temporary installation in an historic district of Largo dos Lóios, Oporto, Portugal, the unusual art object was only present for a short time in 2010.

Contrasting so starkly with its surroundings, the shape and color of the bright red sculpture was a statement about the historic world melding with the modern world.

A playful and interactive project, the Bus Stop Symbiosis drew attention to the existing structure while adding a fun but somewhat puzzling new element to the bus stop and the entire street.

“The public space of the site selected for the intervention – Largo dos Lóios – is designed by the flow of public transport, taking as central element a broad set of (three) banal bus stops. BusStopSymbiosis takes advantage of this centrality – worthy of an artistic intervention – and in a provocative approach encourages the public to think about the design of public space Standing next to an ordinary bus stop and creating a new inter-urban relationship, BusStopSymbiosis is an urban facility that aims not only to increase the space for seating in the existing bus stop, but as well to entertain those who are still waiting for their transport or just strolling up nearby. Unlike the existing seats, BusStopSymbiosis enables people to feel free to seat towards either side of the square, allowing them to voluntarily decide their position in the public space.”

The post Worm-Like Sculpture Attaches Itself to Portuguese Bus Stop first appeared on Dornob.

Life on the road is a lot more comfortable – and chic – when you’re rolling in a custom DIY RV with all the modern amenities a traveler needs, designed to your own specifications. What makes this particular project even more impressive is how totally transformed it is from the dilapidated, dusty city bus the two young designers began with.

A pair of Israeli women purchased an old city bus that was a bit worse for wear, gutted of its seats with various components barely hanging on both on the exterior and interior. They stared at it for two days, trying to imagine how they could turn this seeming junker into the RV of their dreams.

Gaining inspiration from fashion magazines, the women installed new floor, wall and ceiling surfaces, a long kitchen counter, a dining table with brightly-colored seats, a bed, closets and a bathroom with a shower. The counter and one of the dining seats conceal the wheels. A design company helped with the technicalities of fitting everything into the limited space.

The designers decided to restore the exterior of the bus, leaving much of its original character intact. An elevated surface in the rear part of the bus provides storage space, which can be accessed through doors in the floor.

The post Run-Down City Bus Converted to Chic Custom DIY RV first appeared on Dornob.

For all of the indignities that public transportation seems to cause, there are still plenty of people out there who feel a certain affection toward the vehicles that move us around every day. This incredible home office must belong to one of those people, because it’s made from the front end of a real Ikarus bus.

The old Ikarus is in a home in Hungary, which is fitting since Ikarus is a Hungarian company. When the project began the bus was old, rusted and quite neglected. A few coats of paint, some loving restorations – and the removal of all but one small corner – and the bus was ready to become a distinctive home office.

Because the bus’s front is enclosed other than the door, this sturdy office is almost like a separate room within a room. There is only enough space inside for a desk and a chair and perhaps a few little odds and ends. Its working headlights and painstakingly restored exterior make this a truly unique and memorable project.

This reclaimed bus turned home office project is yet another cool way that people can make use of old vehicles that are no longer functional. You might be surprised just how many things can be made out of hubcaps, car hoods, headlights and the other components from broken-down vehicles.

For example, a company called Weld House recycles old scrap metal from cars into cool furniture with tons of personality. Artist and welder Joel Hester makes awesome recycled furniture out of junkyard cars, making the most of worn paint and irregular coloring.

These projects show that no matter how worn out something is, if you’re creative enough, you can find a way to salvage it. That skill will probably come in handy a lot more in the near future as we grapple with the fact that there is no “away” to “throw” things into.

The post Vintage Bus Recycled into Home Office first appeared on Dornob.
