What have homes looked like in America since the first mass arrivals of European colonists in the 1600s? Every era has its own influences based on global trends, the cultures of people who moved to particular regions, and the current events of the day. Now, American Home Shield (AHS) has visualized ten of the most popular styles we’ve seen over the past 450 years of American history. A series of renderings transforms the same home again and again, from the simplicity of early colonial designs to the artsy influences of Modernism.

Cape Cod (1600s – 1950s)

As the name suggests, Cape Cod style originated in the Massachusetts colony, and its particularities revolve around the harsh New England coastal climate. It’s known for a steep roof that easily sheds rain and snow, a central chimney serving a large hearth that warmed the whole house, and a rectangular shape, with cedar shingles on the exterior. It fell out of favor by the 1800s, so most of the original Cape Cod homes were renovated beyond recognition or demolished long ago. What we see today is mostly the product of a Cape Cod revival that started in the 1920s and exploded just after World War II.

Georgian Colonial (1690s – 1830)

One of America’s most consistently popular styles, Georgian Colonial spread across the entire country. It’s admired for its classic proportions, symmetrical design, and a lack of unnecessary ornamentation. Clean lines and shapes provide most of the appeal, with just a few flourishes here and there around the windows, doors, and fireplaces. They were mostly modeled after English estates with influences from classic Greek and Renaissance Italian architecture, and typically feature paired chimneys and windows in rows of five.

Federal (1780 – 1840)

Born in the wake of America’s independence in 1776, Federal style reflects a desire at the time to shrug off European and British influences in favor of a uniquely American aesthetic. Some iconic examples include Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello estate, the White House, and other government buildings built in that era. Just as the country’s leaders looked to Ancient Greece and Rome as models for government, architects chose elements from those historical styles as Federal influences, as seen in the columns and colonnades.

Greek Revival (1825 – 1860)

The fascination with Greek culture continued into the 19th century with the Greek Revival style, which we can clearly see in the designs of plantations in the South, state capitol buildings, churches, and urban row houses built at the time. Colossal Greek temple-style fronts with Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns and details make these houses easy to identify.

Italianate (1840 – 1885)

Though no less grand, Italianate style represented a somewhat more relaxed approach to architecture. Nearly always two stories or taller, these homes featured low-pitched roofs, wide overhanging eaves, large decorative brackets, tall narrow windows with arches or curves, wrap-around porches, and sometimes even a cupola or tower. It’s meant to capture the informal yet picturesque character of Italian farmhouses.

Queen Anne (1880-1910)

British influences came barging back into the country during the Victorian era, when Americans just couldn’t resist the ornate stylings of Queen Anne architecture. And who could blame them? Drawing from upper class and royal British style, what we commonly call “Victorian” architecture today is known for its turrets, gingerbread trim, complex interior layouts, steep roofs, bay windows, and decorative flair inserted at every opportunity.

American Craftsman (1905 – 1930)

Often referred to simply as “Craftsman,” this style arrived along with a wider cultural backlash to the Industrial Revolution, as people began to prefer handcrafted elements in favor of anything mass-produced. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, which also included decorative arts, interior design, and landscape design, it was widely used to create bungalow-style homes from local natural materials. The over-decorated look of the Victorians was out and simplicity was in, and houses in this style featured thick square columns, overhanging eaves, and low-pitched roofs.

Art Deco + Art Moderne (1920 – 1945)

More works of sculpture than conventional architecture, Art Deco and Art Moderne homes make use of materials like concrete, stucco, and glass to craft appropriately artsy structures with unexpected shapes and details. Art Deco is associated with more ornamentation, geometric shapes, and zigzag patterns, while Art Moderne houses often had flat roofs, horizontal grooves or lines in the walls, asymmetrical facades, and glass-block windows.

Ranch Style (1945 – 1980)

Apparently, Americans like their homes the way they like their salad dressing. Ranch is one of the nation’s most enduring and popular styles, partially because its simple single-story designs were so cheap and easy to build. Ranch houses typically have large open spaces inside, with galley kitchens, low-pitched gable roofs, brick exteriors, and large double-hung windows.

Prefab (1945 – Present)

Often called the architectural style of the future, prefabricated homes revolutionize the construction process by building most components offsite in a factory. That means homes can be built faster and with less noise, waste, and impact on the building site, often using modular components. That modularity makes it easy to create stacked configurations in clean, simple shapes, typically clad in low-cost and durable exterior materials like corrugated aluminum.

Monica, type A personality and chef, generally kept her eclectically decorated Greenwich Village apartment immaculate and ready to host a gathering at a moment’s notice. But, as revealed in “The One with Frank Jr.,” there’s one room that Monica neglected: her bathroom. As Joey Tribbiani points out, “You know, if you move your hamper you can see the color the tile used to be!”

If Monica were a real person, we’d imagine she would have given her bathroom at least a small update by 2021. Now, the folks over at QS Supplies have taken the liberty of giving her bathroom a digital makeover in a range of styles they imagine she might choose, from industrial to Moroccan.

Farmhouse Style

Monica’s real bathroom, like much of the rest of her apartment, was painted a very 90s shade of purple. That loud vibe is pretty much the opposite of contemporary farmhouse style, where predominately black and white palettes are typically accented with beige and gray. Perhaps the most realistic (and likely) makeover on this list, it’s pretty easy to pull off, from the plastered paint and wainscoting to the classic tub filler and checkerboard floor.

Tropical Style

Marrying tropical style with modern sensibilities, this fantasy renovation wows with a lush wall of living vegetation alongside the tub, so you can take a mini-vacation in your very own mini-resort whenever you want. Stone, elaborately carved reliefs on the wooden door and a ceiling fan bring the look together.

Art Deco Style

Everything about this Art Deco style bathroom makeover says “sophistication,” from the gorgeous tray ceiling and bold patterned floor to the capiz sconces and gold accents. Of course, if your bathroom looks like this, one would hope that the rest of your apartment is on the same level.

Moroccan Style

Drama, saturated color, and to-die-for patterns characterize this vibrant conversion, turning Monica’s bathroom from blah to unforgettable. Naturally water-resistant stone flags and mosaic tiling are a great choice for both function and looks. Using a piece of wooden furniture in place of a standard vanity is one designer’s trick more of us should keep in mind for our own renovations, and the arch shapes of the door and bath entry take this look over the top.

Japanese Style

For a personality type that could use a little zen, a Japanese-style bathroom might be a good idea. This redesign feels spacious, open, and relaxing, with an absolutely epic wooden bathtub. Timber slats on the walls bring in some warmth, and who wouldn’t love a gorgeous bonsai growing in their shower?

“Are you familiar with the Japanese concept of unagi?” writes QS Supplies. “According to Ross Geller, it’s a Japanese concept meaning ‘state of total awareness.’ According to the Japanese, unagi means ‘freshwater eel.’ It’s a good lesson in Japanese design style: if you want it for your bathroom, make sure you understand the principles, not just the surface appearance!”

Industrial Style

Perhaps the style that most announces “I’m a successful chef in New York City,” this look reimagines Monica’s apartment as a warehouse conversion with raw concrete walls and flooring, a decorative metal grille ceiling, a sliding door, lots of hard angular shapes, and what looks like a slightly smaller, less comfortable tub than her original clawfoot.

This four-bedroom $8.8 million condo is undeniably beautiful, with interiors that live up to the building’s reputation as a design gem. Listed by the Corcoran Group, unit 20B enjoys incredible views from the Hudson River to the Midtown skyline with One World Trade Center right across the street. Enjoying 3,665 square feet of space with four bedrooms and 4.5 baths, the apartment offers 10-foot ceilings, seven-foot casement windows, white oak floors, and a walnut-paneled entry door opening into a formal foyer and generously sized great room with north and west exposures.

“The adjacent open kitchen features custom cabinetry and hardware with calacatta gold marble countertops and back splash, including an island with seating for five,” reads the listing. “The kitchen is fully equipped with state-of-the-art appliances by Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Miele, as well as a garbage disposal and vented range hood. The company’s latest collection of 32 pieces of furniture and many more accessories, “French Art Deco,” softens the bold, graphic style of Art Deco with a romantic French influence. Founder Sara Sugarman and her team of designers took inspiration from the Art Deco movement’s centennial anniversary, adding their own fresh spin to it. The collection was photographed within a classically detailed space to show off how beautifully it all fits together.

The Lulu & Georgia website explains that they “kept the color palette simple, allowing the pieces themselves to make a statement. Our Senna Rug steals the show with its bold, geometric pattern and handwoven details. We layered our Bruin coffee table and side table to provide an added dimension and scale to the room — not to mention added surface space. Lighting is key in this look, and the sculptural Josline wall sconce adds just the right amount of character to space. Though this look is quite minimalist, layered accessories in the same tonal range give texture and visual interest to the built-in bookshelves and mantle.”

“A soft rug underfoot in a bedroom is essential, and our Braeburn rug is no exception. Made entirely by hand, the graphic pattern is a high-low combination of cream and varied-gray wool. The abstract, linear pattern is echoed in both the channel-tufted bed and subtle curves of the wall art. We kept the bedding clean and simple in keeping with the Art Deco style, with soft linen sheets and a pop of color and texture in the mohair throw.”

Other standout pieces in the collection include the Pomona accent chair in rich terra-cotta, the rounded-back Belmont sofa in goldenrod velvet, and the comfy Renzo accent chair clad in fuzzy upholstery reminiscent of sheepskin. The Kianni round dining table is a stunner with its angular brass base, and the Hannah cabinet brings in some subtle texture with its translucent woven cane doors.

The French Art Deco collection is exceptionally well-rounded, so it’s easy to completely redecorate an entire space (or even your entire home, if you’re feeling ambitious) for a cohesive effect down to the smallest details. After all, not everyone has the time and inclination to search antique stores and flea markets for the right accent pieces, even pre-COVID-19.

Some of the effortless finishing touches include a baroque framed print of Mary Hoare’s “Lady Dungarvan, Countess of Ailsbury,” the more streamlined “Motion Study No. 14″ print by Karlos Marquez, the all-brass Arc Table Lamp, and the beautifully simple Ateriors Savion Sconce.

Will these timeless trends ever fade for good? We recently explored the answer to that question in regard to one of the Roaring Twenties’ most popular design movements.

The History of Art Deco

Similar to popular car styles that trend every few years, some great features of art deco just can’t be denied. High contrast, inundated colors, bold silhouettes, daring bursts of chrome and brass — all of these make for classic accents that never lose their appeal.

The movement was born in France just before World War I broke out. It was a time of opulence and indulgence on many levels, and it influenced virtually every aspect of life. Glamor, fantasy, fun, and lavishness inspired everything from the design of ocean liners and vacuum cleaners to the day’s music, theater, and literature. Fashion was playful and alluring, boasting an abundance of rich materials, brilliant colors, and geometric patterns.

Many of the most beautiful examples of art deco can be found on buildings from this period. Today, some of those buildings are even being restored to keep their defining features intact. For example, One Wall Street, constructed in 1929, is currently having its exterior restored by Macklowe Properties. Not only will the structure’s historical limescale veneer be restored through this process, but its celebrated Red Room will also be refurbished to its original art deco splendor, with its triple-height floor-to-ceiling mural by Hildreth Miere acting as its focal point.

Originally a bank designed by Edwin Lutyens in 1928, Hotel Gotham in Manchester UK is now the city’s most famous five-star hotel. It’s been pristinely maintained for nearly 100 years, and visitors come from all over the world to stare at its majestic, palace-like exterior and Wall Street-inspired art deco interiors. The hotel’s regal appearance has even earned it the nickname “King of King Street.”

The New Art Deco

Today’s art deco features a lot more dramatic disparity in the way of wall displays and furniture selections. The colors are deeper and surrounded by even more brass and chrome. Geometric patterns and fabrics from the past like velvet and fringed material are already making a big comeback. And since there’s no real indication that this trend is going away any time soon, we only expect to see more varying combos of concrete, inlay, marble, lacquer, and smoked glass in the coming years. Burlwood, a throwback to the 60s and 70s, is also likely to resurface to heighten the emotional response expected from art deco.

Looking to work art deco into your home? Start small by adding accents to a single room, or go full throttle and push all those dated midcentury furniture pieces into the garage.

Located on Melrose Avenue near West Hollywood, Olivetta blends LA’s sunny, relaxed personality with a bit of Old World flair. Owners Marissa and Matt Hermer hired Tom Parker of interior design firm Fettle, who also designed the Draycott, to infuse the space with equal parts freshness and nostalgia. Contrasting with the airy black-and-white interiors commonly seen along the rest of Melrose, Olivetta is filled with cheerful colors, moody lighting, and soft textiles.

The space is roughly divided into four areas: a bar, a dining room, a “living room” lounge, and a sun room, each with its own particular atmosphere. The idea, Parker explains, is to make it easy to close off certain areas for private parties while leaving the rest open. A lot of consideration has been given to how the spaces change as day turns into night.

The restaurant’s official website reads: “Beneath an expansive skylight and fabric lined ceilings of the Dining Room lies the feature that best summarizes our spirit…a mural-style wallpaper designed by London-based artist Adam Ellis. Imagined in an art deco style and awash in the rich beauty of California’s flora and fauna set in glimmering gold leaf, this flamboyant print clearly defines the panache of Olivetta.”

“Lounging beside the pill-shaped martini bar that serves as the heart of the space, you’ll find the Living Room to be a incredibly comfortable setting in which to enjoy cocktails and conversation. The original artwork by Jack Lewis and Emily Baker, as well as the sumptuous velvet banquettes, add to the cozy old-world charm of the room.”

“The intimate space of the Barroom, anchored by a grand white marble bar, is rich, bold, and in all respects theatrical. Blue mohair walls and commissioned artworks by Shana Fraise, Stephanie Morton, and Blakeney Sanford hang beneath a striking French Riviera-inspired fabric ceiling. The Cabaret Stage in the center of the room hosts live performances and DJ sets nightly.”

“The white-rendered, ivy covered walls of the Sunroom, with beautiful Bougainvillea vines climbing their way into the trellis roof, are reminiscent of the public gardens of coastal northern Italy; creating an airy background for the striking contemporary art by Larry Bell hanging above the fireplace mantle.”

The different materials in each space are similarly thoughtful, including durable leather banquettes in the barroom so that “if it does get rowdy at night, and someone stands on it, you don’t want to put a heel mark through,” Parker tells Architectural Digest. And unlike so many restaurants full of hard, acoustically unkind surfaces that can make it hard to hear your dining companions, Olivetta features acoustically treated walls and fabric ceilings to enhance comfort and intimacy.

Let’s not forget the most important part: the food. Executive chef Michael Fiorelli presides over a pan-Mediterranean menu with influences from Greece, France, Spain, and Italy. You’ll find classic Italian comfort food items like pasta and bread, but there’s also plenty of fresh seafood, artful combinations of fruits and vegetables, roasted meats, and vegan options, too.

In 2020, top European designers are welcoming the return of the 80s, when statement pieces like curved sofas were all the rage. Today, we’ll see more of that glamorous design with sofas, loveseats, and accent tables in curvaceous forms that feel more like functional art than furniture.

Ceilings with Personality

Look for decorated ceilings to make a grand entrance in 2020. No longer boring and blank, they give personality to your home with bold colors like Kelly green, cobalt blue, and poppy red. Geometric patterned wallpaper can also turn a fun and whimsical decor scheme into something striking and modern. Looking for a little ambiance? The setting is a typical “bourgeois” apartment in a 1960s building on Corso Sempione in the historic city center. Calling the project “Teorema Milanese,” the architectural duo of Andrea Marcante and Adelaide Testa transformed the apartment’s classically-styled interiors into a bright, open, and playful living space that feels utterly of its time without being too trendy.

The architects wanted to retain the apartment’s original layout but brighten it up, so they only made one major structural change. Knocking down a partition wall to combine the living and dining rooms into a single large space, they connected the living room to the entrance and helped maintain visual contact with the kitchen. A central corridor leads to private areas like the bedrooms and bathroom.

Translucent partitions outlined in brass transmit daylight from a large bank of windows on the outer wall and establish interesting lines for the eye to follow as you move through the common areas. These lines interact with those of contrasting marble flooring, which is the real star of the apartment. Verde Alpi marble in a rich, deep green anchors the dining space, leading into the streaked blue-and-white Cipollino Tirreno marble in the entranceway. The glossiness of the marble reflects the daylight, giving the home a subdued glow all throughout.

A write-up for the renovation on HomeWorldDesign reads: “The design of the marble slabs and the pattern of the veins within them create visual pathways, guiding the inhabitants through a pattern of precise spatial hierarchies. The floor joints also form the base for a screen in brass and glass, another custom-made piece, which acts both as a visual filter between the entrance and the dining area and also as a storage feature, and whose metal ‘arms’ indicate more intimate visual pathways between the apartment’s entrance, the kitchen, and the living area. The use of marble continues in the corridor and the bathrooms, again covering the walls to provide a luxurious backdrop and base for the washbasins, in gray ‘Salomè’ marble.”

The reflectiveness of the marble is echoed by that of the metallic accents and the diamond-shaped mirror set into the dividing wall. On the ceiling, a rose mimics the look of traditional ceiling ornamentation that you’d usually see in this sort of apartment in Milan, but updates it with geometric simplicity.

Part of the beauty of this project lies in its expert blending of styles and elements, producing something that feels truly original. As the architects draw from Italy’s mastery of marble, the clean-lined elegance of art deco, and the bright, playful style of Memphis design (which actually originated in Milan), they create a home that’s rooted in history and a sense of place, yet refreshingly new.

Milk Train offers the kind of treats that stand on their own merit, like soft serve convections sitting on clouds of white cotton candy, topped with all manner of cookies, pretzels, candies, and even breakfast cereal. And when the stuff you’re selling is already manna from heaven to influencers, you might as well have a space to match.

Design firm Formroom took inspiration from art deco train stations to give the ice cream shop an iconic look. Instead of minding your step, you’ll be reminded to “mind the melt” by the double lines on the tiled floor. The counter features signs that read “order,” “arrivals,” and “collect,” while toppings are housed inside graphic interpretations of old instrument panels.

Instead of train schedules, the board on the wall displays the menu. Suitcases adorn shelves on the walls, and the booths resemble tiny train cars. The white, baby blue and pale wood color palette is appropriately cool in more ways than one.

Design publication Architronic reports: “Milk Train approached FormRoom to design and produce an immersive space that catered primarily to their diverse Instagram demographic, who propelled the brand to instant online fame in 2018. FormRoom worked with the brand to strategize and evolve upon their four core pillars: Surreal, Timeless, British, and Immersive.”

“FormRoom created a unique, dream-like landscape for the Milk Train customer. A predominately monochromatic palette is utilized to echo the art deco movement popularized amongst traditional train stations and platform iconography. Covent Garden was to provide the core brand design blueprint, by which all future sites will evolve from. Since launching, the design has generated an unprecedented response online, including being awarded ‘Best Experiential Design’ at The Drum Awards 2019 and ‘Best Café Design’ at the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards 2019.”

The shop takes advantage of it’s ultra-enticing aesthetic with undeniably cute seasonal accents like autumn leaves and spring flowers — all the better to match their corresponding seasonal ice cream offerings. Every detail has been carefully thought out, and the result is stylish and memorable instead of feeling like a passing fad.

Designers take inspiration from all sorts of places, from nature and history to music and movies. Yes, it’s not at all uncommon for themed decor to come out after the release of a feature film, bringing its scenes and characters to life through one-of-a-kind pieces. But when Pottery Barn found inspiration in the Fantastic Beasts movies, they worked directly with Warner Bros. to create a line of products that perfectly captured their aesthetic without sacrificing any of their own signature style.

These new pieces are part of the Pottery Barn Teen collection, and are clearly targeted at teens and teens at heart who were captivated by the Harry Potter spin-offs. The 30-piece collection makes it easy to drape an entire room in the Fantastic Beasts-style through furniture, bedding, and accessories. The art deco design elements are front and center to mirror the film’s 1920s setting. Shades of gray, blue, and greens pair flawlessly with metallics to emulate the characteristics of the film’s creatures, including the phoenix, moth, snake, and raven featured prominently in the series.

While some items represent the film in general ways, other pieces are notably specific. For example, the Magical Spells table lamp features a wand-holding hand supporting an orb-shaped light. A large black bean bag features the face of the Niffler Critter. Newt Scamander makes an appearance to the collection as a suitcase shelf, and the easily-identifiable Nagini Mirror is encircled in wriggling snakes.

Fantastic accessories include pillow covers in the design of the Nagini Mirror and Wanded Pillow, as well as the Magical Threat Clock directly out of the MACUSA headquarters.

As a centerpiece for the room design, the Wren Wingback Upholstered Bed comes in 13 color options, and can be topped with either the Fantastic Beasts Tencel Quilt + Sham or the Art Nouveau Duvet Cover + Sham.

Adorn the walls with a 52” x 52” Celestial Dome Tapestry, complete with magical creatures and astrological elements. There are also plenty of lamp, throw rug, and wall hanging options to go around. There’s even a shimmering Ministry of Magic robe to lounge in.

While the artwork and attention to detail are remarkable, Pottery Barn Teen also took a step towards corporate responsibility by ensuring that many of their Fantastic Beasts products were fair-trade certified, ensuring safe working conditions for those who manufacture the goods. Plus, there is at least one linen labeled with the Oeko-Tex® certification, which means the fabric was tested in a third-party lab and verified to be free from over 300 harmful substances. Think of it as a step above organic bedding.

When it comes to creating a magical fantasy film, nobody does it like Warner Bros. When it comes to designing bedroom decor that takes you to another world, Pottery Barn is your one-stop shop. No wonder new this collection looks so good.

While the original bistro is known for its wood-clad comfort, capturing the spirit of its Bedford Avenue location in the Greenpoint neighborhood, the Los Angeles location takes inspiration from its own unique location within an old art deco building. Designers Home Studios are based in Brooklyn themselves, but they didn’t hesitate to dive right into West Coast style and make it their own.

Certain details in the new restaurant echo those seen on the other side of the country, including the arched shape of the bars, metallic accents all throughout, and a general sense of casual airiness. But fittingly enough, Five Leaves LA feels remarkably sunnier than its predecessor, thanks in part to high ceilings, light walls, and curving built-in banquettes in mustard yellow and a shade of coral that verges on terra cotta.

The new 2,430-square-foot space occupying the first floor of Hollywood’s Merrick Building is split into dining and bar areas, each given a window into the other. The long white bar top stretches like a ribbon over its bright turquoise base, with glass bottles carefully arranged behind it like an apothecary.

The back bar itself is custom-made from black steel by Shelton Studios, as are the plant shelves holding succulents and tropicals, which run just below the ceiling and through the entire space. In the dining area, all of the building’s rounded and arched shapes are echoed by modern pendant lighting.

The Los Angeles space is about twice the size of the restaurant in Brooklyn, giving the designers more to work with, but that presents its own challenges in terms of keeping the vibe cozy, says designer Oliver Haslegrave. Dropping the pendant lights down low over the tables was one way to achieve their desired mood.

“On the whole, if you were to put the two in front of somebody, and ask which is in New York and which is in L.A., I think they’d guess right,” says Haslegrave in an interview with Architectural Digest. “The new one is lighter and softer in materials and finishes. There’s a lot of reclaimed woodwork. There’s a little bit more color in the upholstery and paint finishes. The floor and metalwork are very true to the original in terms of their rawness. Ultimately, it’s going to be about energy. For the design part, you want to read the room, so to speak, in terms of what is the energy there, and the building.”

Serving a New American menu with an Aussie twist all day long, Five Leaves Los Angeles offers everything from breakfast with grapefruit mimosas to dinner with its signature Turmeric Bees Knees cocktail, which features gin, lemon, turmeric-infused honey, orange bitters, and spices.

Some standout plates at Five Leaves L.A. include “gravlax,” a breakfast plate with house-cured char, watercress, beet-cured egg, pickled onion, caper cream cheese, and toasted rye, as well as minted cavatelli with English peas, green garlic, Meyer lemon, and smoked ricotta.

That’s why we think Pharrell Williams’ first foray into the world of drinks and dining is sure to make waves, especially considering the fact that San Francisco trendsetter Ken Fulk, French celebrity chef Jean Imbert, and hospitality wunderkind David Grutman are all involved. Welcome to Swan and Bar Bevy: the newest hip offering to grace Miami’s Design District.

The project is mainly the brainchild of Fulk, who’s done a great job of channeling old-school Miami into both the overall concept and the subtle intricacies of this 250-seater restaurant and tropically-themed bar. The result is a blend of classic Floridian design and contemporary sophistication. Yes, this restaurant and bar could not exist anywhere else but Miami — despite the fact that there are hints of inspiration from lots of other places worked into it, making for a truly unique offering.

The restaurant’s circular bar is most definitely a highlight here, painted a pastel shade of pink and adorned with diamond shaped mirrors along the rim of its dropped ceiling. This pattern is repeated in both the carpet and the detailing in the bar panels. The materials are at once sumptuous and familiar, with floral throw cushions and wicker-backed chairs reminiscent of your grandmother’s veranda paired with House of Hackney wallpaper to bring it into the modern era. An eclectic collection of artwork permeates the space and seamlessly compliments all the rosy hues within. The effect is one of exaggeration and excess, but it’s so carefully pulled together that it also feels timeless and comfortable.

Bar Bevy is a decidedly more sultry offering, consisting of a single darkened room that’s dripping with luxuriously patterned wallpaper, statement oriental rugs, dark wood on the floor and ceilings, and the occasional lantern to illuminate the corners and seating areas. The Art Deco theme still pervades this exotic space, though it very much feels like it’s also tinged with Eastern influences. The bar’s corridors and restroom areas provide some light relief in the form of bright white wooden paneling inset with green leafy patterns.

Of course, the biggest draw to Swan and Bar Bevy is Jean Imbert: the French chef who dazzled Pharrell Williams with a private dinner inside a New York apartment some years ago and who is now Williams’ partner in this venture. The menu will feature a list of American-French cuisine thought up by this auteur, of which collaborator David Grutman says: “We’re trying to go simple. We don’t want to overdo it with a million sauces. You’ll notice a little French influence, but it’s not going to be traditional. And you definitely won’t see the same old tuna tataki that’s basically on every menu right now.”

Some hotels rely on their distinctive interior designs to draw in guests. Frequent travelers may start to feel like all their hotels look the same after a while. The difference between hotel A in Atlanta and hotel B in Houston becomes indistinguishable in a blur of neutral colors. But the Blue Moon Hotel in Miami is definitely a place that’s distinguishable. After a major renovation in 2015, it became memorable in a powerfully colorful way.

The Blue Moon is located in the Miami Beach Architectural District, commonly known as the Art Deco District, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Conceived of in 1997 as a fusion of two existing hotels (the Lafayette Hotel from 1934 and Florel Apartment Hotel from 1940), the Blue Moon Hotel quickly became dated in the years after its opening. When it came time to revamp the complex, the designer’s biggest challenge was remaining respectful to history while also giving it a contemporary feel. In the end, a mix between art deco artistry and 21^st-century modernity was achieved. It’s now a hotel where you can experience Miami Beach around colors and textures that simulate the sensation of being outside even when you are inside.

Painted four different shades of blue, the hotel’s reception desk resembles a vintage dresser, with each level of decorative drawers separated from the others by a metal trim. The handles exist purely for ornamentation, giving the desk a unique identity that foreshadows the tranquility locked away in the rooms upstairs. Blue Moon presents old imagery as something new, giving you the feeling of a place that you think you have been before, but really have not.

Each of the hotel’s 75 rooms and four two-room suites give guests a choice between enjoying the city like a tourist or living like a true Miamian. With their blue accent walls and white and light brown furnishings, the more traditional rooms provide enough visual balance to be comfortable but still exciting. In other rooms, the accent walls are adorned with contemporary imagery and art deco patterns for a more audacious look. In every room, the natural light from a large set of windows creates the perception of a vast interior space.

The art deco theme can also be traced throughout the hotel’s common spaces, from the hallways to the meeting rooms. This theme is only interrupted by the restaurant and pool, where white tables are offset by an array of colorful seating. The splashes of blue and green on the restaurant’s only wall nicely tie the deisgn together, simultaneously acting as a kind of exclamation point.

The Blue Moon Hotel provides its guests with an intimate experience without coming off as over the top or gaudy. The hotel’s judicious emphasis on contemporary design in some areas and the art deco style in others keeps it feeling fresh and relevant. Something like that is usually hard to attain in historic places, but here it seems to have been effortlessly achieved.
