Celebrity creative director and designer Willo Perron has released his first furniture collection, comprised of livable, modernist pieces that rebel against the notion that high-end furniture should need to be protected by things like stuffy drink coasters.

“I love simplicity and purity,” the French-Canadian-born artist says. “I have an aversion to clutter and I find minimalism somewhat oppressive. All these pieces are meant to be used and be playful and played with — nothing I make is precious or too fragile, it’s meant to be used. My mantra is ‘no coasters.’”

Debuting his seven household objects at the Lower Manhattan gallery Matter Projects from September 22nd to November 30th, this is the first time Perron has “actually physically showed things to people,” the first time that people can see and touch his work in person. As a creative director, he has made a name for himself working on video production, print, brand identity, and set design for stars like Jay Z, Rihanna, and Kanye West. Perhaps his most famous work is the floating Ferrari he was able to orchestrate for Drake’s 2018 concert series.

Furniture design, while a new arena for Perron, stays true to his enveloping dramatic style. For starters, his Sausage Sofa is an enormous 40-foot long “bean bag thing,” an “adult playground stoner dream.” His inspiration came from his younger days in Montreal. “My neighbors had this giant beanbag, and as kids we would all just jump around in this thing and just play in this thing all day long, so it’s kind of a nod to that,” the designer told Architectural Digest.

Also included in the collection is the Pillo Sofa, which appears to be constructed completely out of overstuffed cushions. Hailed as a “near instant classic,” Perron designed it and other pieces in his line simply because he couldn’t locate what he was looking for anywhere else.

“Some of the furniture pieces came from us trying to find pieces for interior projects that we were working on at my studio when we couldn’t quite find perfect options with the right energy. It was just developing pieces to put into projects. I like the idea that in doing people’s interiors or their homes a lot of the pieces are unique, and they’re not that commercially available.”

The “No Coasters” anthology incorporates the Dino surfaces trio: a table, bench, and coffee table. They all feature organically-round legs and softened table edges. The Vanessa seat is an ultra-comfy riff on a papasan chair. All the pieces are colored in the beige and brown tones of the arid landscapes near Perron’s Hollywood Hills home.

When asked if he’ll continue in furniture design, the artist he replied “absolutely.” Reiterating his design aesthetic, he says, “Objects, and clothes, and things in life don’t have to be uncomfortable to be beautiful, and it also doesn’t negate more visceral things, and doesn’t make it less attractive. They don’t need to have those constraints to be beautiful…. I like that idea of being able to live in the things that you have. They’re not museum pieces.”

The post Willo Perron Launches “Anti-Coaster” Furniture Collection first appeared on Dornob.

Fashion shows are are all about movement and flow: the way the clothes flit along the runway in tandem with the models to create a living, breathing tableau meant to draw the eye and bring the designs alive. But what happens when the whole dynamic of an in-person fashion show is turned on its head by a global pandemic that discourages large gatherings and up-close-and-personal interactions between viewer and apparel?

The answer is simple: fashion innovators get creative.

Put on hold for nearly two years as a result of the pandemic, fashion shows went mainly virtual, and many of the top houses resorted to livestreams and digital showcases to present their newest collections. Others even took it a step further with über-innovative takes on the traditional. Dior, for example, presented miniature versions of their couture dresses for a digital show during the pandemic, while others opted to hold their shows in wide open public spaces to give attendees adequate room to spread out.

In 2022, however, most fashion houses have returned to the norm. In-person shows are back on the catwalk, as evidenced from the uptick in designers opting for live shows during the 2021 Paris Fashion Week (despite the Omicron surge and continuing COVID restrictions in the French capital).

But there are still fashion all-stars that are opting for creative and forward-thinking solutions when it comes to presenting their wares to the masses, whether it’s in response to the pandemic or simply as a way to stand out and be bold. The latest from Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele is a stunning example of the house’s iconic vision on full display.

Showcasing Gucci’s Love Parade Collection, the second by Michele in the historic house’s 100th year of business, the collection was originally presented outdoors along Hollywood Boulevard — the perfect backdrop for the glamorous Gucci. A riotous celebration of over-the-top luxury and cutting-edge design subverting old Hollywood tropes, the collection takes on a whole new dimension when taken off the runway and placed on display. Rather than focusing on movement, the pieces’ sedentary status is instead shown in a series of marvelous midcentury tableaus that are more akin to department store window displays than they are a live show.

The next show took place at the epic Preston Hollow Dallas mansion, a modernist marvel of clean lines and open spaces designed by Texas architect Lionel Morrison. The space was decorated with Michele’s vision of midcentury excess for the event — think bright, shaggy rugs, flower power wallpaper, and shapely furniture in lush fabrics and even more eye-popping colors.

Guests were welcomed into the magical mansion and were free to peruse the goods at their leisure. In addition to the Love Parade Collection, the space also showcased many of Gucci’s most luxe jewelry pieces and coveted skin bags (flown in from Italy specifically for the occasion), a slew of made-to-wear customizable pieces, and, of course, some decadent Gucci in-house cookies.

While many top fashion houses have already chosen to get back on the runway, others are still looking for new ways to display their wares to audiences looking for that extra touch of iconic glam — and the latest installation from Gucci’s visionary creative director Alessandro Michele is a shining example of this. Set to the backdrop of a gorgeous Dallas mansion bedecked with all kinds of plush midcentury pieces, the collection is a feast for the senses that proves fashion can exist — and thrive — just about anywhere.

The post Gucci’s Latest Fashion Show is a Midcentury Fever Dream first appeared on Dornob.

“I know it when I see it.” Interestingly, the famous line delivered by Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart regarding pornography could also be applied to design. Why do I need to know all of the definitions and boring parameters when I know it when I see it?

While this is true to some extent, it does help to know a bit about design terminology, as it can help you make the right decisions when developing your own sense of style. After all, when is a sofa not a sofa? When it’s a midcentury modern sofa, of course!

To get a clearer picture of the nuances that can often exist within the design world, it’s helpful to start by learning about two of its most well-used terms: “contemporary” and “modern.” While you may have heard these words being bandied about interchangeably with regard to different design aesthetics, there are actually subtle nuances between the two that can make a difference — especially if you’re planning your own interior design scheme. And while it’s okay to use these terms to describe trends that are right now, or of the moment, once you get a grasp of their differences, you’ll be one step closer to becoming a bona fide design expert.

Contemporary: Right Now

Let’s start with contemporary design, as it’s a little harder to define than its counterpart. Unlike “modern” design, contemporary design isn’t defined or restricted by a specific period of time. Rather, it’s constantly evolving to reflect changing trends and styles as they happen. Think of it in terms of present-day design. For example, as I write this on December 20th, 2021, one of the most popular design trends is cottagecore. But cottagecore itself has evolved since its inception last year, with variations on the theme that place it firmly in the category of being “contemporary.”

Another aspect of contemporary design is its fluidity. Not defined by any one style, it tends to adopt various facets of current design trends. Think of it as a mish-mash of up-to-the-minute trends. Right now, that means minimalist clean lines, modernist neutral palettes, Art Deco vibes, and a combo of natural textures with shiny, manmade objects like steel and chrome.

Modern: Early to Mid 20th Century

Shouldn’t “modern” be the term to describe the stuff that’s happening right now? Not in the world of design, where modern is actually so last century. But that certainly doesn’t mean that it’s passé, and it’s definitely not out of fashion. In fact, it’s one of the most popular design trends out there, showing that some things never really go out of style.

Modern design was essentially borne of the modern art movement, heavily influenced by aspects of both Scandinavian and German Bauhaus designs. Think simplicity in both form and function, more natural materials like wood and stone, and earthier tones, rather than the neutrals you tend to see in contemporary design. And yes, midcentury modern does fall under the umbrella of modern design, as it came about in — you guessed it — the middle of last century (the 1950s and 60s).

Now that you know the essential differences between these two popular design terms, you’ll be more equipped to develop a signature aesthetic unique to your own taste and style – because design is so much more than just “knowing it when you see it.”

The post What’s the Difference Between Modern and Contemporary Design? first appeared on Dornob.

The Pikachu two-seater sofa (199,100 yen, or about $1,755 USD) and chair (154,000 yen, or about $1,358 USD) are two major standout items. Featuring wooden frames in a simple midcentury modern style, this seating offers cushions upholstered in what looks like a conventional pattern from afar. Even better, they pair perfectly with the Pokéball side table (111,100 yen or about $980 USD), which has a similarly subtle design (relatively speaking, at least).

The cutest piece of all has got to be this Snorlax rug (44,000 yen, or about $388 USD), depicting the wild creature snoring away as always, with its two little fangs sticking out. Four other available rugs include a Gengar ghost pattern, Eevee, Ditto, and a Partner group of Venusaur, Charmander and Squirtle, all for 9,350 yen (about $82).

The Pokémon themed bed linens are also available in two sizes: twin (4,950 yen or $44 USD) and double (10,450 yen or $92 USD). Prints include a blue Ghost pattern, Pikachu, Eevee, and Partner Pokémon. You can also get pillowcases and blackout curtains to match each one.

If the prices seem a little high, that’s because furniture in Japan tends to be more expensive than it is elsewhere in the world, and Karimoku is a leading manufacturer of high-quality items. It’s unclear whether either the Pokémon Center or Amazon Japan will ship items from this Pokémon collection overseas, so if you’re intent on getting your hands on some of these pieces, you might have to get a little creative to import them.

While these particular pieces are pretty unique, there’s no shortage of Pokémon-themed decor on sites that do ship to the United States and elsewhere outside Japan. At the American Pokémon Center website, items for the home include a giant 45-inch tall Ditto bean bag chair, some equally cute abstracted Pokémon graphic rugs and throw pillows, a Snorlax wall light box, and many more themed objects like pool floats, string lights, pot holders, and mugs. And don’t forget to cruise Etsy for handmade versions from small creators all over the world, including an enormous plush Snorlax, a Pokécube lamp, Mewtwo furniture pulls, and a neon Bulbasaur sign, just to name a few.

Last year, IKEA released a digital archive of every single one of its annual catalogs dating back to the year 1950. What began as a black and white leaflet with text written by IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad himself transformed into the brand’s familiar staged rooms showing off the items in each new collection. Each one is like a time capsule of decor trends, the clean lines of midcentury modern design morphing into the oversized shapes and candy colors of the 1980s and back toward minimalism by the 2000s.

Household Quotes took a deep dive through all of these back catalogs to examine exactly how living rooms evolved across generations, revealing not just what people liked their spaces to look like, but how much it cost to furnish and decorate the entire room each year (adjusted to reflect inflation). The UK-based website produced realistic renders for every decade, putting together its own scenes featuring the most iconic furniture pieces at the time.

1950s

Recognize that armchair? The Rex, which cost the equivalent of $350.38 in 1950, looks almost identical to the Strandmon chair available today for $279, reflecting the fact that classic design never really goes out of style. Ornate photo frames and a delicately proportioned upholstered couch add decorative touches, but the star of the show is definitely the UTÖ coffee table. Quite a bargain at just over $135 and made of elm wood, it looks like it could be in the showroom of a much higher-end furniture store today for a lot more money. The total cost of this room is $1,819.34.

1960s

Check out the mod wallpaper and enviable midcentury modern pieces available during the 1960s. Doesn’t it make you wish you could order straight out of that catalog? This selection brings together neutral tones and a whole lot of wood, toning down the upholstery to let the form of each piece steal the limelight. The RIO coffee table ($161.93) was made with entertaining in mind, treated with a plasticized finish to withstand all the cocktail parties people indulged in back then. The total cost of this room is $1,764.22.

1970s

By the 70s, IKEA’s offerings were getting a little groovier. In the original catalogs, you’ll find all kinds of humorously dated pieces, like bulging couch cushions covered in hideous brown fabrics, but also styles that are trending today, like cane and rattan. Household Quotes chose items that are decidedly 70s but wouldn’t necessarily look out of place mixed into a contemporary living room, like the CENTRUM 50 coffee table ($180.51). The total cost of this room is $1,701.32.

1980s

We’re not ready for 1980s-style couches to come back anytime soon, are we? The YSTAD three-seater sofa is one of the mildest of IKEA’s living room seating offerings from that era, which included a whole lot of loud prints. The ERVIK/VOSS coffee table exemplifies the kind of metal and glass combinations that were popular at the time. You might recognize the BILLY cabinet, which first appeared in 1979 and has now sold 41 million units. This room cost a total of $1,480.25, the second-most affordable era in IKEA design.

1990s

Not exactly a decade known for design that stands the test of time, the 90s produced a mishmash of styles that started off unabashedly bold and bright and became much more simple and utilitarian by 1999. This collection includes some head-scratchers, like the LAVIN standing lamp and odd MULLSJO armchair, but also the well known LACK table, one of IKEA’s most affordable pieces of furniture ever produced. Priced at around $20 back then, it’s now down to $9.99 for the same size and shape. This room cost $2,086.23 to put together.

2000s

By the 2000s, IKEA had found its design stride with pieces they’ve kept around in the ensuing decades. Favorites like the POÄNG armchair, originally offered in 1976, have come to exemplify the brand’s visual identity. This was also the decade when IKEA really started to expand into the United States, which is now its second-largest market after Germany, cementing its aesthetic into our cultural consciousness. This room cost $1,732.95.

2010s

The most expensive decade to furnish your home entirely with IKEA finds at $2,806.45, the 2010s brought back the brand’s beloved STOCKHOLM range, a premium collection featuring a distinctly Scandinavian aesthetic. This wool STOCKHOLM rug ($229.20) will likely become one of many in the collection’s history to end up a rare and desirable commodity in the decades to come. The leather STOCKHOLM sofa is another piece with high potential to age beautifully, with leather that “becomes softer and acquires a darker tone in time.”

2020s

We’re just two years into the current decade, but so far, it’s the most affordable time in the brand’s history to get absolutely everything you need from IKEA. This room totals $1,112.95 and illustrates how the Swedish retailer has crafted a contemporary aesthetic that’s minimalist yet warm, with an increasing focus on sustainability.

The post 70 Years of IKEA Catalogs Show How Living Rooms Have Evolved first appeared on Dornob.

When the coronavirus pandemic first brought normal life to a screeching halt in March 2020, retired interior designer Annie Kampfe suddenly found herself with more time on her hands. She pulled out the dollhouse kit she’d purchased from Earth and Tree Miniatures in Amherst, New Hampshire in 2017 and got to work alongside her husband, Cliff Donnelly. Instead of faithfully reproducing the model, though, they subverted the kit, recutting almost every piece to achieve the midcentury modern vibe they were after.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CKuOMA2D74G/

What began as a way to pass the time soon became a passion. The Kansas City, Missouri couple wanted their “mini modern house” to feel like a real space, so they spent thousands of hours throughout 2020 perfecting every last detail of the three-story, 13-room miniature home, working in 1 to 12 (inches) scale. Using tiny tools, they handcrafted the components as true to life as possible, often using real materials like wood, tile, mortar, and concrete, as would be appropriate for the full-scale versions.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B1RwXFMAe3S/

Kampfe was inspired by the house she grew up in, which her parents built in Omaha, Nebraska. She spent a lot of time searching for just the right pieces to put inside the miniature, which all had to be midcentury modern in style. Most of it is vintage and German in origin, but some came from contemporary artists and craftspeople she found online. She even sourced a few pieces from her childhood home, including cork wallpaper her parents had hanging in their den.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CLQhDlDjcFR/

https://www.instagram.com/p/CLH-RYCjYP4/

Each room of the dollhouse is a marvel, with a lot to take in. The possessions are perfectly disheveled, as if the miniature occupants just stepped out. In the living room, which Kampfe floored with wood in a parquet pattern, there are tiny paintings, candlesticks, books, liquor bottles, drinking glasses, and textiles she needlepointed herself. The house is wired for electricity, too, so the lamps (custom-made by a friend) all work.

Before the pandemic began, the couple did a lot of traveling, allowing them to pick up miniatures from cities like Atlanta, Maine, New York, and Paris for the home. The tiger-shaped rug in the master bedroom, found in a local store, is the piece that started the whole project. “It intrigued me because I’m a lifelong needlepointer,” she told Today. “I asked the gal who owned the shop what it was used for, and she said, ‘Annie, I think it’s meant to be a dollhouse rug.’”

In January, when the home was more or less complete, Kampfe’s son posted about the project on Twitter, and interest in their design soon exploded across the internet. Since then, they’ve continued to modify and refine the dollhouse, adding a basement level with a functional garage door. They offer close-up views and details on each space on Instagram @minimoderndollhouse.

“We had no idea Scott was going to put those photos on his Twitter,” Kampfe told Today. “I thought he was teasing me — he was like, ‘Mom, you’re going viral.’ I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’ We don’t necessarily love all the attention we’re getting, but I love the joy and happiness that this little miniature world has brought to a lot of people. It’s just been so humbling that something we’ve enjoyed so much made people happy.”

The post Missouri Couple Spent Lockdown Building an Amazing Midcentury Modern Dollhouse first appeared on Dornob.

Maria Sharapova may be best known for her prowess on the tennis court, but it turns out she’s also a style phenomenon. She was intimately involved in the design, construction, and decoration of her Japanese-inspired home in Los Angeles, which produced a lot of buzz when it debuted in Architectural Digest back in 2019. Now, she’s collaborating with Canadian furniture company Rove Concepts to bring her vision to a line of midcentury modern furniture.

The “Maria” collection features six pieces, each designed with an eye for minimalism, durability, versatility, and elegance. Staged within her own home, their neutral shades, textural textiles, and refined silhouettes epitomize “Japandi” style, a word describing the overlap between Scandinavian “hygge” coziness and the perfectly imperfect nature of Japanese wabi-sabi. Both emphasize natural materials, heirloom quality, and the patina that comes with regular use.

The “Maria” furniture and decor collection includes a plush velvet sofa with a walnut frame, a coordinating upholstered bench, a woven hemp rug, a floor lamp with a dome shade, a softly curved pedestal-shaped coffee table made of glass fiber concrete, and a matching side table. The lamp and tables in particular have a statuesque feel to them, and the sofa is both stylish and welcoming. The pieces range between $250 and $3,124 USD, with the sofa and bench offered in five muted nature-inspired hues like “warm taupe” and “porpoise” gray.

“Traveling the world, I have been able to see the way culture and design intersect,” Sharapova says. “This collection was born out of my passion for design and inspired by my love of art and architecture. In partnership with Rove Concepts, my first-ever home collection pays homage to my life as an athlete, designer, art enthusiast, and entrepreneur.”

“Between Maria’s design-forward thinking, craftsmanship, and attention to detail and Rove’s expertise in creating beautifully handcrafted furniture, this collection is a seamless fit,” a Rove Concepts spokesperson adds.

For her three-story home overlooking the ocean, Maria collaborated with architects Grant Kirkpatrick and Duan Tran of KAA Design. The interiors are defined by expansive glazing and panel-formed concrete walls, accented with silver travertine, cedar, and bleached oak. Set just steps from the living room, the swimming pool is the true heart of the home, flanked by tatami-style lounge beds and sculptural chairs and tables by Willy Guhl.

Sharapova grew up in a sparse home, and as a result, she associates well-curated belongings with good health. Each piece in her current home is chosen with intention, pairing the simple lines of midcentury modern furniture with the character and personality of antiques and one-of-a-kind finds. It’s easy to see how her choices for her domestic refuge translated to the “Maria” furniture collection.

“I kept telling everyone that I want this to be the best house they’ve ever done. I tried to push their vision because I believe in all of them and want to see them shine,” Maria told Architectural Digest. “I’ve traveled all over the world and enjoyed lots of incredible spaces. But my home is my absolute favorite. I think that’s the way it should be.”

The post Tennis Star Maria Sharapova’s New Furniture Line is Effortlessly Cool first appeared on Dornob.

Property records show that the couple closed on their new five-bedroom, 3,800-square-foot house for a final price of $9,625,000 on December 30th, 2020.

The luxury residence sits on a 0.39-acre lot with more than 100 feet of frontage on scenic Biscayne Bay. Built in 1955, the home hasn’t been renovated since 1960, and it’s still packed full of historic charm without looking like a dated time capsule. Although the listing on Realtor.com states that the home is a whopping 526.63 percent more expensive than nearby properties, South Florida realtor Vickie Arcuri (who wasn’t involved in the sale) describes it as a “teardown” based on the photos.

“True midcentury modern gem located on the most sought after location of prestigious North Bay Rd,” reads the listing. “Enter into this unique architecturally designed home surrounded by lush landscaping through wooden gates and an open foyer entry where you will find high ceilings and great walls for art throughout. The functional indoor/outdoor living makes it the perfect home for entertaining. Enjoy the bay breeze and breathtaking sunset views from the outdoor oasis that offers over 100+ ft of water frontage and unobstructed bay views.”

Whether they really do demolish the existing house to rebuild or just give it an extensive makeover, the process will be par for the course as far as Crawford and Gerber are concerned. A source told Page Six that the couple “really enjoy building and renovating houses,” having already done so with two previous homes in Malibu and Beverly Hills.

It’s hard to imagine paying over nine million dollars just for a lot in an area with a FEMA Flood Zone rating of 10/10, but that’s how exclusive this little stretch of Miami Beach is. Crawford and Gerber will now be neighbors with the likes of Karlie Kloss and Josh Kushner, who just bought a $23.5 million eight-bedroom estate down the street, and a host of other big names in fashion and business, like Tory Burch fo-founder Chris Burch, former J Crew CEO Mickey Drexler, and billionaire Barry Sternlicht.

Other celebrities who call North Bay Road home include Phil Collins, Dwayne Wade, and Gabrielle Union. Nearby Indian Creek Island, also known as “Billionaire’s Bunker,” has recently been in the news as the future home of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner. Tom Brady and his supermodel wife Gisele Bundchen also bought property there in December, with plans to tear down the current home and build their “environmentally friendly” dream mansion.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="The swimming pool outside Cindy Crawford's new Miami Beach mansion boasts an impressive view of Biscayne Bay.
Wealthy people continue to flock to the Miami Beach area despite dire predictions about the city’s future as climate change advances. It’s considered the “most vulnerable” coastal city in the United States, with an additional six inches of sea level rise expected by the year 2030. About 10 percent of South Florida’s coastal areas will be underwater with a sea level rise of two feet, and a catastrophic five to six feet of sea level rise is likely by 2100.

The post Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber Buy a Mansion on Miami’s Exclusive North Bay Road first appeared on Dornob.

Taste in couches is almost as personal as taste in clothes. After all, your soft upholstered seating is probably among the most lived-in objects in your home, and everything about it has to be just right for your needs, from its style to its comfort level.

Newly released in 2020, these six sofa options include a little something for everyone: artsy, retro, bohemian, classic, and family-friendly. Hewing to the prevailing design trends of the year, they’re also modular, customizable, and made to last.

Swyft’s Snap-Together Sofa

If you love the flat-pack ease of bringing home a sofa from IKEA but long for a much easier assembly process (and higher quality), London startup Swyft has just the thing for you. Their new Model 01 features pieces that simply click together using the company’s “Swyft-Lok” mechanism, so transporting it is a breeze. Plus, with its sleek silhouette and gorgeous color choices, it’s a versatile fit for many interior design styles. It’s available in sofa, loveseat, and chair styles, with the three-seater retailing at £995 (about $1,230).

Burrow’s Slope Nomad Sofa

Midcentury modern diehards will appreciate the understated beauty of Burrow’s Slope Nomad Sofa, “the essential sofa reinvented for modern life.” Though it’s a looker, there’s much more to it than meets the eye. It’s made with strengthened steel pins, galvanized latches, precision milled Baltic Burch, and tight stain and scratch-resistant olefin fiber weave to stand up to whatever your family can throw at it. That’s no surprise, considering it’s made by personalized bed company Helix. Continuing the trend toward modular designs, this sofa is also designed to be totally customizable, so you can create configurations ranging from compact options for small apartments to enormous eight-seat sectionals. They start at $1,431.

Architectural design comes to life in a variety of ways, often standing out against a landscape of traditional elements. Strong characteristics of buildings, houses, and other dwellings add eye-catching appeal and provide unique features that make their designers easily identifiable. This type of innovation garners attention and praise from other architects, journalists, and design enthusiasts — but of course, what might initially appear to be ingenious details can also be the very things that turn potential buyers and investors away down the road. That’s because extreme designs often come to be associated with trends, although that fact doesn’t come to light until some time has passed and it becomes obvious that the work isn’t timeless after all.

Although there will always be people with the money and appreciation for extremely unique architectural works, most eccentric features find a difficult time gaining acceptance over time.

Take, for example, the Aqua Star floating house in Southeast Portland’s Oregon Yacht Club Marina, located on the Willamette River. This disco-era vessel covers nearly 3,000 square feet and boasts stainless steel ceilings, along with an anodized aluminum wrap around its exterior. Starting out at nearly $1 million, the realtors selling the Aqua Star quickly realized they would need to attract the attention of a very specific buyer. After over 1,000 days on the market, the price dropped $145,000 to $850,000. Architect Robert Oshatz, who built the two-story metal vessel for the original owner, gave it the look of an observatory and allowed for ample outdoor viewing from the interior.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="The inside of the Aqua Star Floating House is similarly shiny and retro.
Update: We recently noticed the listing was removed from the Sotheby’s International Real Estate website altogether, so it may have found a new owner — or perhaps the original owners have decided disco might come back en vogue after all.

Moving down to Boca Rotan, Florida, you can find an example that is simply out of this world, complete with pricing fluctuations to match. The Star Trek-themed abode owned by tech entrepreneur and former Penthouse magazine executive Marc Bell originally landed on the market in 2014 with a price tag of $35 million. Four years later, it was priced at $34.5 million. Last year, the asking price lowered drastically to $25 million, followed by another drop to $22.9 million. Perhaps the price tag is still scaring away potential buyers, or maybe it’s more about the 20,000-square-foot custom build that completely encompasses Bell’s passion for sci-fi, with a home theater set to resemble the Starship Enterprise and doors that replicate the iconic “whooshing” sound on board.

If this Brentwood, LA home that just sold for $1,865,000 is any indication, perhaps upgrades aren’t the key to the successful sale of real estate. Although the 1952 home shows pride in ownership, it’s likely not the type you’d expect, with every detail of the home remaining in original condition. From paneled walls to rare light fixtures, shag carpet, and distinctively original cabinetry, the home held on to the midcentury aesthetic long enough for it to come back into fashion, only sitting on the market 47 days before finding a new owner.

Owning a home designed by a notable architect may simply be a matter of passion for the work, but whether it’s actually a good investment is difficult to say depending on whether the structure ends up being considered “trendy,” and eventually, outdated. One home in Illinois that’s fresh on the market will truly measure interest in such architecture, having been designed by the renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Priced at $2,275,000, it will take both the right budget and the right appreciation to re-sell the house at 170 N Mayflower Rd, Lake Forest, IL.

The post Does Trendy Design Always Stand the Test of Time? first appeared on Dornob.

Interior designs that used to be influenced by and shared via Better Homes and Gardens are now exploding on social media platforms like Pinterest and Instagram. In fact, the Instagram hashtag #interiordesign has garnered over 87 million posts to date. Riding high on this wave of popularity, home improvement service finder Angie’s List has decided to identify decorating trends all across the United States to establish which styles are most prevalent in each region.

To effectively analyze the information, the research team commissioned by Angie’s List focused on the 10 most common design tags, which they identified as:

https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/midcenturymodern/

https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/bohodecor/

https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/industrialstyle/

https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/cottagestyle/

https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/scandinaviandesign/

https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/modernhome/

https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/shabbychic/

https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/rusticdecor/

https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/coastalliving/

https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/traditionalhome/

The team then cleaned up the data by deleting outliers and organizing it all by state, ultimately creating two maps: one that shows the most popular design style tag in each state, and one that shows which states share their #instahomes the most.

They discovered the state of California is particularly proud of their interior design efforts, publishing over 10,000 design-related posts to date. Florida was barely a close second with a still notable 4,600+ posts, and Texas measured fairly high, too. The more remote states of North and South Dakota, on the other hand, either don’t focus on interior design styles at all or just aren’t frequent Instagram users, considering they only showed 38 and 42 hashtags, respectively.

When it comes to style, the easternmost and Southeast regions of the country are dominated by #coastalliving, the most popular indoor decor style of all the options listed, with 18 total states boasting the hashtag.

#MidcenturyModern came in a close second, dominating 16 states across the midwest plus California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Washington. Eight other states felt #rusticdecor better defined their tastes, while Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee instead favored #traditionalhome. Border-sharing Utah and Nevada felt the #modernhome vibe, and verdant Vermont was the sole state to come in under the #cottagestyle heading.

Of course, there’s a bit of subjectivity to consider when it comes to describing design elements. For example, one person’s definition of boho might be another person’s version of traditional. So the Angie’s List researchers went a bit further, identifying elements and images that best represented each category of decor.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="A typical Coastal Living-style bedroom, as created by Angie's List.
#coastalliving incorporates a soft palette of blues and white, along with nautical elements and natural materials such as wood and rope.

#boholiving wasn’t well represented, though it’s likely something along the lines of plush velvets, coarse tweeds, and the soft cottons of pillows and cushions counterbalanced with copious throw rugs.

#rusticdecor is more of a farmhouse look with chalkboards, wire baskets, open shelving, and metal accents.

If you think #traditionalhome is more your style, think blank canvas with neutral-colored walls, balanced out with hearty floral or damask upholstery and striking artwork. Of course, traditional style can also overlap with #cottagestyle, which itself features bright and airy spaces identified by antiques and cozy textiles.

The best thing about the Angie’s List findings is that they prove it’s almost impossible for a home to perfectly fall into any one of these categories. Why not create a #modernhome sunroom in your home, complete with a #coastalliving bedroom and an #industrialstyle bathroom for a perfect representation of your unique tastes?

The post Angie’s List Analyzes Instagram Posts to Determine the Most Popular Decor Style in Every State first appeared on Dornob.

Are you stuck in a bad relationship with trends that aren’t helping you live your best life? Break up with them. We just entered a new decade, after all, and it’s time to throw open the doors, air everything out, and make some serious changes.

Interior design experts are all over the internet telling us which items, colors, and styles are soon going to feel like the modern equivalent of shag carpeting and harvest gold appliances (which have possibly out so long that they’re almost cool again). Here are four of the biggest offenders:

Midcentury Modern Everything

Image via Froy

Midcentury modern is an enduring style for a reason, and many people consider it a classic that can never be “out.” That’s still true when it comes to individual pieces or small collections, but there’s no denying that we’ve had a solid 15 to 20 years of midcentury modern mania that’s led some people to completely overdo it in a way that ultimately feels cookie cutter. Does your house look like a midcentury modern showroom? Mix it up a little. Bring in some color and texture, items from different eras, and objects that represent a little more of your own personality.

Millennial Pink

Image via Enter My Attic

Is this a beautiful shade of pink? Yes. At least, it is if you like pink at all. It’s soft, it’s warm, and it’s got a sort of hazy Wes Anderson feel to it that’s easy to love. But now that it’s 2020, it feels very last decade. In fact, it’s probably safe to say millennial pink will be one of the defining trends of the 2010s, once we have a little more distance and perspective from them. In the mean time, let’s put it away for a while and experiment with some new colors.

Geometric Shapes

Image via Sara Elman

Sharp, graphic lines make a big impact and add visual interest. But we’ve seen a lot of geometry in interior design over recent years, both in the form of larger architectural details and prints and patterns found on decor. Chevrons, crosses, and triangles feel painfully 2010s at this point, but even geometric shapes that are a little less ubiquitous could use some freshening up. If you want to move forward but keep visually interesting accents, try replacing these items with softer, rounder curving shapes.

All White Everything

Image via Hall of Homes

It’s not hard to see the visual appeal of all white interiors. They’re common in art galleries for a few reasons: they amplify daylight, give the eye an easy place to rest, and make focal points pop. Plus, we’re so bombarded by visual input and clutter nowadays that being in a pure white space feels like a mental vacation. The problem is that not only are they incredibly impractical (ever try to cook a full Italian dinner including marinara sauce in a white kitchen?), but they can also feel sterile and cold. If you want to feel like you live in a vaguely extraterrestrial mausoleum a la Kim and Kanye, go for it. But this kind of minimalism is more for show than for actual living.

Obviously, as with all trend-related advice, take this with a grain of salt. Don’t get rid of stuff you still love. Donate the items you don’t feel connected to anymore instead of throwing them out. Check resale shops and thrift stores before you buy something new. And if you really want to avoid all the waste that comes with trend-chasing, always ask yourself whether you’re replacing something because you truly want or need to, or because you’re blindly following trends that will soon fall over the same cliff as all those before them.

The 1950s and 60s were the golden age of air travel, when the seats were spacious, the service was luxurious, and the food was freshly cooked. Planes often had dining lounges and open bars, and flight attendants were glamorously dressed in outfits designed by the likes of Emilio Pucci. All of that feels a long way from the cramped, harried, low-quality experience typically seen on commercial flights today, so it’s easy to see why so many people are nostalgic for it.

New York City-based architecture and design firm Stonehill Taylor aims to bring that feeling back at the TWA Hotel. The only in-airport hotel at John F. Kennedy International Airport, the TWA makes use of the head house of the TWA Flight Center airline terminal, designed in 1962 by renowned architect Eero Saarinen. The terminal was preciously declared a city landmark in 1994, which protected it from demolition even as other parts of the airport were knocked down and renovated around it.

The building itself already had the iconic look of air travel from yesteryear. Stonehill Taylor was brought in to infuse the guest rooms, Sunken Lounge, Connie cocktail lounge, and other public spaces with that same flair, simultaneously updating them for modern sensibilities. The design team took inspiration from the year 1962, the first time an American was able to circle the Earth and a time when aviation was “the promise of the future” signifying the beginning of a new era.

Outfitted in period-appropriate furnishings, the guest rooms enjoy views of the tarmac. There’s definitely something Mad Men about them, but you’re not entering a time warp. The vintage details that accent each space feel tasteful rather than forced, and the inclusion of TWA-branded toiletries in the bathrooms is fun.

But the standout is definitely the cocktail lounge set in the vintage Lockheed Constellation “Connie” L-1649A Starliner, which features refurbished vintage airplane seats in cherry red, banquette seating, and what the architects describe as a “reveal moment,” when guests can see the plane’s original interior frame encased in glass. The cockpit is also visible, restored with authentic controls and switches.

The firm explains that “by offering a modern refuge with a thoughtful, strong sense of design and space, the rooms are meant to make guests feel the same appreciation and excitement for aviation that travelers once felt during the rise of the industry.”

“Set back on either side of Eero Saarinen’s iconic TWA Flight Center, two newly built wings designed by architects Beyer Blinder Belle and Lubrano Ciavarra house the 512 guest rooms. Sixties-inspired elements include select Saarinen-designed Knoll furnishings, a martini bar, a vintage rotary phone, and gleaming terrazzo tiles in the bathroom with Hollywood-style vanities. The rooms have a crisp white palette accented with warm walnut elements and brushed brass.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="An air travel-inspired lounge area inside the Stonehill Taylor-designed TWA Hotel.
They add that “custom furnishings and lighting, like the wood trim, which follows along the ceiling edge and softly illuminates the room, [reference] midcentury design. In many of the rooms, beds are positioned to let guests enjoy the exciting rhythm of the runway or the glory of Saarinen’s TWA Flight Center.”

The TWA Hotel officially opened in May 2019, and rates are quite reasonable, currently running between $160 and $200 per night.

The post Stonehill Taylor Designs Retro Air Travel-Inspired Interiors for the TWA Hotel first appeared on Dornob.

The General Motors Technical Center is widely regarded as an icon of midcentury architectural design and has received generous praise as a landmark project since its opening in 1956. Over 60 years later, General Motors designer Susan Skarsgard offers a detailed history of architect Eero Saarinen’s original construction and design of the center via her new book.

The book is titled Where Today Meets Tomorrow: Eero Saarinen and the General Motors Technical Center, and it includes photographs, architectural drawings, interviews, documents, and an unprecedented level of insight on the process of creating such an iconic project. When referencing the design, Skarsgard comments: “Every detail is prototypical — they didn’t go off-the-shelf for anything, whether trim work, door handles, and every bit of hardware and wall covering — it’s all completely designed for that space.”

The General Motors Technical Center is located in Warren, Michigan and was Saarinen’s first-ever solo project. Of course, that doesn’t mean this task wasn’t also the brain child of several talented midcentury artists, including names such as Harry Bertoia, Alexander Girard, Florence Knoll, and Alexander Calder. The center was even deemed a National Historic Landmark in 2014. Ironically, despite receiving such acclaim and status, this landmark was not very well known for a long time, as it was mostly kept hidden behind closed doors and only admitted employees and guests. That’s what makes this new book all the more exciting.

The photos in the book give a full picture of the atmosphere around and within the center. The facilities resemble a wide, sweeping campus and cost around 100 million dollars to create. The center has 38 buildings and accommodates over 20,000 employees. The photos also show us the “Design Dome,” which is based on the steel and metals commonly used to make automobiles. The dome is used to display GM’s new product line and is considered the heart of the campus. We’re even given an ariel view of the entire facility, including “The Lake” and its stainless steel water tower.

The book also gives us access to the interiors of the buildings previously seen only by employees and insiders. The technical center’s simple, crisp lobby features large glass windows, reflective tables, and large rectangular arm chairs. The dining area, while also overwhelming linear, incorporates a splash of orange and lush greenery. Everything about the look is minimal and sophisticated while still maintaining comfort.

Eero Saarinen was a famous Finnish-American architect known for multiple high-profile projects. Some of his designs include the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri and the TWA Flight Center of the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. While architectural design obviously made up a large chunk of his adult life, it was also a considerable part of his childhood. This is because he was the son of acclaimed Finnish architect Gottlieb Eliel Saarinen. Subsequently, Eero’s upbringing and European influences allowed him to become a leader in the International style for architecture, which is similar to modernism but originated in Europe post-WWI.

While Eero did have big shoes to fill growing up, he certainly left a large shadow of his own, designing some of America’s most iconic landmarks.
