When the real estate agents say it’s one of a kind, they aren’t kidding. Those experiencing the house in person enter through a gated forecourt hidden behind an adobe wall, followed by a central entry hall that opens to the dining room and living room. The standout feature of the living room is a large two-sided stone fireplace with a floating hearth. Overhead, the long “viga” wood beams enhance the sense of spaciousness, while the diagonal lines of the latilla wood draw the eye to the softly textured walls with built-in display niches.

The kitchen houses a large central island with bar-style seating, wooden cabinetry, high-end appliances, built-in wine storage, and windows overlooking an adjacent terrace. Many of the home’s six bathrooms are the size of a bedroom you’d find in a more average-sized home, and the walk-in closets are the stuff of dreams. As of December 12th, 2022, the home is still available. Cox and his wife Alena (aka Mrs. Doodle) started by recruiting friends and family to help them paint everything stark white, inside and out. When the pandemic restrictions and lockdowns started in spring 2020, Cox took advantage of his sudden downtime, devoting himself entirely to this project. He did all the doodling himself, working on one room at a time, starting with the upstairs bedrooms. Each one has a loose theme, like birds, sea creatures, food, clouds, robots, or “heaven and hell.” Cox doesn’t sketch anything out or even come up with a particular idea before he starts working, preferring to just draw whatever comes to mind in the moment.

Everything is monochromatic, and anytime Cox made a mistake, he left it in place. “The nature of a doodle is to let it be,” he told The Washington Post. By the time he was done, Cox had used 900 liters (238 gallons) of white paint, 401 cans of black spray paint, 286 bottles of black drawing paint, and 2,296 pen nibs. He also took 1,857 photographs of the process, later stitching them together to create a roughly two-minute-long stop-motion animation that reveals what the project looked like as it came to life.

Though Cox greatly enjoyed getting into the improvisational flow of constant doodling, it did have an effect on his psyche. In February 2020, he got the flu and started having doodle-related hallucinations, spending six weeks in a psychiatric ward. “It’s a scary feeling to think you are losing your mind and not know what’s real,” he told the Sunday Times. “I’m glad I have a grasp on reality again and now I want to make sure to go on walks and step outside of doodle world now and then.”

While he was working on it, Cox did his best to keep his doodled home under wraps. He limited visitors and was always afraid a delivery driver would snap a photo and put it on the internet. Luckily for him, that never happened. His neighbors have been supportive (and the fact that his house is hidden behind a dense layer of trees probably helps with that). However, the couple who sold him the house probably don’t love the results now that Cox has shared them with the world. “They told me whatever you do, please don’t doodle,” he told the Evening Standard. “I didn’t listen.”

Cox was able to buy the house in the first place after his career took off, the result not of agents or gallery representation, but social media and word-of-mouth. By 2021, the 28-year-old was selling nearly $4.7 million worth of doodles around the world over a period of just nine months. He now has over 2.7 million followers on Instagram and more than 95,000 YouTube subscribers, not to mention collaborations with major brands like MTV Europe and Puma.

Now, Gucci’s former HQ at the historic and high-end Grafton Street in Mayfair, London has come on the market for a whopping $66 million. The last private residence remaining on the prestigious street, the mansion is currently owned by a trust and has undergone extensive renovations since the brand vacated in 2010. But the property itself remains as gorgeous as ever, and much of the 14,000 square-foot home’s most modern touches remain much as they were during Gucci’s tenure.

There’s plenty of history in this former headquarters. The answer is simple: fashion innovators get creative.

Put on hold for nearly two years as a result of the pandemic, fashion shows went mainly virtual, and many of the top houses resorted to livestreams and digital showcases to present their newest collections. Others even took it a step further with über-innovative takes on the traditional. Dior, for example, presented miniature versions of their couture dresses for a digital show during the pandemic, while others opted to hold their shows in wide open public spaces to give attendees adequate room to spread out.

In 2022, however, most fashion houses have returned to the norm. In-person shows are back on the catwalk, as evidenced from the uptick in designers opting for live shows during the 2021 Paris Fashion Week (despite the Omicron surge and continuing COVID restrictions in the French capital).

But there are still fashion all-stars that are opting for creative and forward-thinking solutions when it comes to presenting their wares to the masses, whether it’s in response to the pandemic or simply as a way to stand out and be bold. The latest from Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele is a stunning example of the house’s iconic vision on full display.

Showcasing Gucci’s Love Parade Collection, the second by Michele in the historic house’s 100th year of business, the collection was originally presented outdoors along Hollywood Boulevard — the perfect backdrop for the glamorous Gucci. A riotous celebration of over-the-top luxury and cutting-edge design subverting old Hollywood tropes, the collection takes on a whole new dimension when taken off the runway and placed on display. Rather than focusing on movement, the pieces’ sedentary status is instead shown in a series of marvelous midcentury tableaus that are more akin to department store window displays than they are a live show.

The next show took place at the epic Preston Hollow Dallas mansion, a modernist marvel of clean lines and open spaces designed by Texas architect Lionel Morrison. The space was decorated with Michele’s vision of midcentury excess for the event — think bright, shaggy rugs, flower power wallpaper, and shapely furniture in lush fabrics and even more eye-popping colors.

Guests were welcomed into the magical mansion and were free to peruse the goods at their leisure. In addition to the Love Parade Collection, the space also showcased many of Gucci’s most luxe jewelry pieces and coveted skin bags (flown in from Italy specifically for the occasion), a slew of made-to-wear customizable pieces, and, of course, some decadent Gucci in-house cookies.

While many top fashion houses have already chosen to get back on the runway, others are still looking for new ways to display their wares to audiences looking for that extra touch of iconic glam — and the latest installation from Gucci’s visionary creative director Alessandro Michele is a shining example of this. Set to the backdrop of a gorgeous Dallas mansion bedecked with all kinds of plush midcentury pieces, the collection is a feast for the senses that proves fashion can exist — and thrive — just about anywhere.

That description might give you a mental image of a palace with hints of Liberace and 1980s Dallas-style glamour, but in reality, Jenner’s home is a tad more toned down⁠—albeit extremely luxurious and expensive. The 16,000-square-foot space feels surprisingly homey and relatable in some areas, and outrageous in others. The “dish room” is a walk-in closet displaying all her fine china on illuminated shelving, including six sets from Hermés, one Gucci Herbarium set in green, a fleet of made-to-order Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica porcelain pieces, and even a custom set with the Kardashian-Jenners’ photos on them. The Flora Danica set alone likely cost over $50,000. A set of jade-green plates also hangs above Jenner’s dining table.

Then there’s an entire massive three-door refrigerator dedicated to nothing but green vegetables, packed with broccoli, artichokes, asparagus, avocados, and more. If you’re the type who buys healthy produce with good intentions only to watch it go to waste, the very sight of it all might make you anxious. But Jenner has a personal chef, not to mention millions of dollars to make all the avocado toast she could possibly desire.

The opulent bar includes shelves full of silver cocktail shakers and crystal glassware, as well as a mirrored cabinet full of Baccarat crystal. Two small drinks tables in the living room offer a place to socialize with a cocktail in your hand. The meticulously organized pantry is the stuff of Pinterest fantasies, and the home also features your standard rich-people items like an eight-car garage, movie theater, guest house, 9.5 bathrooms, and a private gym.

“My favorite thing in the world is to be with my family,” Jenner says. “As time goes by, I realize I really want to spend more time with my kids whenever I can. We’re all so busy, so crazy, and the days go by so fast, so this, to me, is heaven.”

Good thing for Jenner, almost all of her family members live in the neighborhood. Kris and Khloe built heir homes on a parcel of land that used to contain a single family home once rented by Britney Spears in 2011 and 2012 for $25,000 a month. The floor plan has already been revealed for the Ando-designed mansion in a private gated community south of Palm Springs. Kardashian and Ye bought the $6.3 million plot of land together before their split, and in November 2021, Kardashian filed for a permit to build a new single-family residence with a pool and spa. Architectural drawings reveal an unusual, futuristic-looking home with a large central courtyard and a triangular roof shaped sort of like a Ouija planchette. Others have compared it to a spaceship.

The home will be located just down the street from properties owned by Kardashian’s mother Kris and sister Kourtney, and Kardashian says it will be “concrete, gray-toned, and really zen.” Ye recently acquired a Tadao Ando-designed home of his own in Malibu, custom-built for investment manager Richard Sachs in 2013.

Less is known about Kardashian’s Kengo Kuma project, which she’s hoping to keep under wraps “because no one knows I have a place there.” Kuma is known for beautiful wooden creations that bridge the gap between architecture and nature, typically utilizing natural materials and the labor of local craftspeople.

Kardashian told Vogue that designing her ultra-minimalist Hidden Hills, California mansion with Ye and interior designer Axel Vervoordt led to a “love affair with architecture, specifically Japanese” (she got to keep that one in the divorce). The nearly all-white home features highly curated furnishings, little in the way of decor, and a focus on clean lines and amorphous shapes. Kardashian has described it as a 15,000-square-foot “minimalist monastery” with eight bedrooms and ten bathrooms.

In fact, Kardashian loves Japanese architects so much, she incorporated a real samurai house into the Hidden Hills property. “Our guest house is actually a samurai’s old home that my art dealer, Axel Vervoordt, used to own,” she told I-D Magazine. “We got the bones of this old house from Japan and built it into our house, because it had such a different energy.” The aesthetic of Japan fascinates her, she says. “I love how everything is designed, I find it super inspiring, whether it’s the pottery, dishes, or packaging design. It’s equally really fun, aspirational, and inspirational.”

Ye is currently looking to offload one of his ranches in Wyoming. The $11 million, 3,888-acre estate in the town of Cody was listed in October 2021, just two years after he bought it. It appears that the rapper has changed his plans to build a mansion and two underground garages on the property, which already has two spring-fed trout lakes, an equine facility, livestock corrals, and a go-kart track.

The 105,000-square-foot property overlooking the Los Angeles area has a starting bid of $295 million, a price tag that would far surpass the current record of $238 million paid by billionaire hedge fund baron Ken Griffin for his New York penthouse in 2019.

Built over the past 10 years by developer Nile Niami and his company Crestlloyd, The One turned out to be more than he could handle, as he ended up losing the property to Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2021 after incurring more than $180 million in debt.

His loss means a gain for the next space-hungry billionaire, especially as the Bel Air property has previously been valued up to $500 million. The scale is hard to fathom. The 5,500-square-foot master bedroom alone is larger than the majority of Americans’ entire houses. The rest of the mansion encompasses 20 more bedrooms, 42 full bathrooms, and seven half baths. And with many of the rooms featuring towering 26-foot ceilings, the house really lives up to its grandiose name.

“The One earns its moniker because a home of this size and magnitude simply can never be built again due to anti-mansion-ization laws that were passed in Los Angeles during The One’s construction,” says one of the co-listing agents Branden Williams of The Beverly Hills Estates. “To have 3.8 acres at the top of Bel Air with unobstructed 360-degree views from every single room is unparalleled.”

As would be expected in a home twice the size of the White House, The One includes every imaginable amenity, making it more like a private resort than a home. There are five indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a channel of water bordering three sides of the home. The exterior also features a 10,000-square-foot deck, a golf putting green course, and a 400-foot outdoor running track.

Inside, some of the space is devoted to a wellness center with an obligatory juice bar, a games rooms, a four-lane bowling alley, a 40-seat movie theater, a full-size hair salon and spa, 10 indoor and outdoor bars, and even a massive nightclub. The property also boasts a tennis court, a 10,000-bottle wine cellar, and a 30-car garage with two car-display turntables. It also includes an events space/charity pavilion, perfect for hosting the “world’s top philanthropists for charity events without ever leaving [the] estate,” according to Williams.

“Comfort is an invaluable resource, so purchasing a property with virtually every amenity available is impossible to quantify since it has never been done before,” says co-listing agent Aaron Kirman of Compass. “Supply and demand helps determine something’s value and this is one of one. The supply couldn’t be more limited.”

Calling the super high-end estate “the first & last of its kind,” Kirman says he expects the bidding to get competitive.

Bezos’ new estate was reportedly sold in an off-market deal from Colorado-based holding company Lochland Holdings, owned by energy mogul Doug Schatz. It’s home to three buildings, including a main 4,450-square-foot home with three bedrooms and three bathrooms, a 1,839-square-foot guest house with two bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, and a third guest house measuring 1,815 square feet with three bedrooms and one bathroom. The property also has a 700-meter swimming pool and its own private white sand beach.

Since it was never listed on real estate websites, no updated photos are available of the grounds or interiors, but images from the last sale in 1996 and an exterior photo spread in Maui Magazine give us an idea of what it looks like.

The property is located on a marine fishing reserve surrounded by the dormant lava fields of the Haleakalā volcano, which last erupted in 1790. The deal closed in June, but details were just revealed by local real estate sources, who told The Dirt that the sale was unusually complex. The $78 million price, if accurate, is a record for Maui. Bezos is also said to be shopping for a home for his parents in Montage Kapalua Bay near a favored luxury resort, and is continuing to scout additional off-market properties. He’s currently the second-richest person in the world after Elon Musk.

Mark Zuckerberg’s addition to his massive Kauai estate includes the Ka Loko reservoir, which is infamous for a burst dam incident in 2006 that released 400 million gallons of water and killed seven people on Kauai’s north shore. The reservoir is considered high-risk and has not yet been repaired. The spokesperson for Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, says the couple plans to take the compound and “work closely with a number of community partners to operate a working ranch, promote conservation, produce sustainable agriculture, and protect wildlife.”

These efforts to mollify the community aren’t going over well with everyone. In 2016, Zuckerberg gained some enemies when he constructed a six-foot stone wall around his property that blocked easy public access to Pila’a Beach. In 2017, his lawyers filed “quiet title” lawsuits against hundreds of local Hawaiians who might hold an interest in small areas within the boundaries of his estate, an attempt to force the owners to auction off their lands. In some cases, defendants are even required to pay Zuckerberg’s legal fees. Faced with local anger, Zuckerberg (the fifth-richest person in the world) finally dropped the suit, but the pockets of land were eventually sold at auction.

“This is the face of neocolonialism,” said Kapua Sproat, a law professor at the University of Hawaii, an a 2017 interview with The Guardian. “Even though a forced sale may not physically displace people, it’s the last nail in the coffin of separating us from the island. For us, as native Hawaiians, the land is ancestor. It’s a grandparent… you just don’t sell your grandmother.”

The home sprang from the imagination of its owner, plastic surgeon Dr. Jean Cukier, who has long had a fascination with science fiction. He drew the concept on paper and gave it to architect Lynn Swisher Spears to bring to life. The neighbors reportedly weren’t in love with the design at first, nor its tendency to draw curious onlookers from around the world. But Star Wars fans are obsessed, and as it turns out, there are a few vaguely sci-fi features inside the house, too, though most of it just looks like your average Texas mansion.

At the center of the home is an angular atrium fit for a supervillain. There’s a grand staircase near the front door, soaring ceilings, and floors made of concrete and stone that were hand-cut and painted in black and white for a jagged effect. Believe it or not, when Dr. Cukier drew out his concept, he wasn’t imagining Darth Vader. His inspiration was aviation. He did, however, ask for it to be “dark and mysterious,” says listing agent Carron. “He wanted the inspiration around the house to be the stealth fighter, the aircraft. The luxury residence sits on a 0.39-acre lot with more than 100 feet of frontage on scenic Biscayne Bay. Built in 1955, the home hasn’t been renovated since 1960, and it’s still packed full of historic charm without looking like a dated time capsule. It’s hard to imagine paying over nine million dollars just for a lot in an area with a FEMA Flood Zone rating of 10/10, but that’s how exclusive this little stretch of Miami Beach is. Crawford and Gerber will now be neighbors with the likes of Karlie Kloss and Josh Kushner, who just bought a $23.5 million eight-bedroom estate down the street, and a host of other big names in fashion and business, like Tory Burch fo-founder Chris Burch, former J Crew CEO Mickey Drexler, and billionaire Barry Sternlicht.

When American film producer Ken Kao and his wife, Japanese fashion model Jessica Michibata, purchased one of the most stunning estates in Los Angeles, it was initially kept a secret. Only after several months of sleuthing did the sale of the mansion, designed by architect Noah Walker and built on speculation by Nathan Frank, a concert violinist and scrap metal industry giant, go public.

The two-structure manor sits on a three-and-a-half-acre parcel in the mountains that overlook Beverly Hills. It’s further complemented by the natural countryside of the area, including 130 native oak trees scattered throughout the property. Upon completion in 2015, one of China’s most renowned film producers and investors, James Wang, bought the property for $19.9 million. Four years later, he sold it to Michibata and Kao for an all-cash payment of $22.5 million.

The 8,000-square-foot main house has an uncharacteristic floor plan. All the communal rooms are positioned above the bedrooms, which themselves are partially sunken into the hillside under a live roof of edible herbs. The two-story 2,000-square-foot guesthouse is a renovated barn topped with a wood-clad upper floor. Like the main house, it also merges seamlessly with the surrounding nature. Glass walls and open-concept common areas give both structures an open, airy feeling.

Two of the most fantastic features of the Michibata-Kao home are the triangle-shaped courtyard sunken into the main house and the 75-foot swimming pool, which itself is infinity-edged on three sides and situated directly under one of the largest oak trees on the site. The courtyard’s stark focal point is a fire pit while the rest is kept open and simple, with concrete walls that reach the sky to round out its calming, isolated feel.

Kao, who previously teamed up with Ryan Gosling to create the Arcana production company, is the lone son of multibillionaire Min Kao, a Kansas-based tech magnate who co-founded GPS colossus Garmin (whose reported net worth is over $4 billion). Besides modeling, Michibata’s brief marriage to Formula One megastar Jensen Button — and the apology she received from Richard Branson for touching her face and making her uncomfortable many years ago when he was drunk — are among her other news-making experiences.

The Kao family is used to making real estate news headlines. In 2019, Kao’s older sister Jen Kao paid Jodie Foster $15 million cash for a sprawling house in the Coldwater Canyon area. Kao’s parents also own one of the most massive estates in the Beverly Hills Flats (once owned by Kirk Douglas), which they purchased for $15.4 million in 2013. And nine years ago, Min Kao paid $40 million for a penthouse at 15 CPW, one of Manhattan’s most prominent residential structures.

Set on five acres of land at the back of a gated community, the home is one of Legorreta’s only private residences in Los Angeles. Listing agent Judy Federal of Hilton & Hyland Real Estate told Robb Report that the owners are architecture lovers who also have two Frank Lloyd Wright homes.

The owners collaborated with the architect to create a spacious residence with unexpected elements, like a sun-drenched central atrium containing a reflecting pool. One of them has been revealed to be Hollywood producer Joel Silver, who’s known for action movie franchises like Die Hard, The Matrix, and Lethal Weapon.

The home has eight bedrooms and eight full baths, many featuring 100-year-old ceiling beams taken from Connecticut churches and barns. One standout detail is the living room’s stunning adobe-red ziggurat ceiling, which is shaped like an inverted pyramid, with a spherical chandelier hanging from the center.

Circle and square shapes repeat throughout the mansion, appearing in embossed leather wall motifs in the 20-person theater and within the pool, mezzanine, and skylight of the atrium. The master suite features so-called “his and hers” bathrooms, each adorned floor-to-ceiling in a different type of marble. Murals can be seen throughout many of the rooms.

Ricardo Legorreta, a protégé of Mexican modernist Luis Barragán, founded his own studio in 1964 and was later joined by his son Victor. In 2000, their firm became Legorreta + Legorreta, adding to the many projects Ricardo had designed himself over the decades. Among his most famous works are Pershing Square in Los Angeles, the San Antonio Central Library, and the Camino Real Hotel in Mexico City, all of which feature sculptural forms and vivid hues like red and bright pink.

$77.5 million is a lot of money, even for the elites of Los Angeles, but of course, the buyer wouldn’t simply be purchasing a home in this case — they’d be taking ownership of a piece of cultural history, and arguably, a colossal work of art.

The couple bought the Hidden Hills, California property in 2013, but decided to complete a mega renovation before finally moving in four years later. The living spaces are open concept with streamlined furniture selections. From what we’ve seen, there’s not one square foot of clutter, and every report has used the term “minimalistic” when describing the decor.

From the pictures Kim’s posted, we can also see that the hallways and staircases are stark white, with little to no furniture in any of them. In fact, they also lack wall hangings, table decorations, and area rugs. Everything’s barren and arguably cold.

Based on the social media flurry of responses to the interiors, it actually doesn’t seem like much of an argument. Some seem insistent upon providing what they feel is much-needed decor to the home, going so far as to Photoshop the images to incorporate artwork, flowers, and children’s toys (something that’s notably absent in a house with four young children).

Another striking feature is the home’s nearly complete lack of color. It’s difficult to imagine keeping anything clean in a house with four kids, let alone room after room draped in nothing but white.

In her own words, Kim describes the place as a “minimalist monastery.” With over 15,000 square feet, eight bedrooms, and ten bathrooms, there’s a lot of space to fill, but it’s so bare that it’s drawn more comparisons to a mental institution or an abandoned museum than it has a monastery. To each his own we say, but what most people seem to be really wondering is why, with so much money between them, would they choose to live in such a decor-less home. It’s a matter of personal style — very personal style, considering the fact that Kanye worked hand-in-hand with architects and designers on the project.

Many elements of the design were developed by Axel Vervoordt, a Belgian art dealer and interior designer. However, Kanye was very involved during the renovation, and word on the street is if anyone disputes his creative flow, he or she will likely be out of a job, so it’s no wonder that so many of his ideas can be seen in the final product. For instance, in the master bathroom we find what looks like a flat countertop with two faucets is actually a slightly contoured surface that acts as a double sink vanity. The room also has a bathtub large enough to fit all four kids, and the entire ceiling above it is a light box. In the attached bedroom, a 130-inch TV rises up out of the ground when they decide to use it, but returns to its hiding place with the push of a button when they don’t. Even the light switches were designed in minimalist fashion, with no box around them. Instead, they look like three small buttons on the wall.

Even in a shot of one of the girl’s rooms, which itself is draped in pink, we can see the clean lines and complete absence of goods. Perhaps they only allow us to see what they want us to see, but it appears that these are two stars who spend a lot of money just to achieve an empty abode — but perhaps that carries special meaning to them.

In an interview with Architectural Digest, Vervoodt said, “We had very profound conversations about the space of the mind and the importance of silence.” He went on to explain how this influenced the design of the space, adding that “Kanye and Kim wanted something totally new. We didn’t talk about decoration, but a kind of philosophy about how we live now and how we will live in the future. We changed the house by purifying it, and we kept pushing to make it purer and purer.”
