Unspillable Wine Glass: When You Get Tipsy, This Cup Won’t

Wine glasses may be designed to look elegant and optimize flavor-enhancing air flow, but with those top-heavy goblets teetering on such a thin base, they’re an accident waiting to happen. The ingenious Saturn Wine Glass by Christopher Yamane of Fragile Studios eliminates the risk of impossible-to-remove wine stains with a design that makes the glass virtually unspillable.

Made from a single piece of glass, the Saturn Wine Glass features a rim that prevents it from turning over if you knock into it. Yamane used traditional glass-blowing techniques to give the stemless glass its signature Saturn-like ring, folding a bubble of glass and trapping air within it.

The rim also acts as a fill line, so servings are perfect every time. It might take a while to get used to holding this glass in the palm of your hand, but it’s worth the assurance that you won’t end up with a dress covered in Shiraz.

Star Wars Coffee Table Pinball Machine

It’s a coffee table. It’s a pinball machine. It’s a “Star Wars” lover’s dream. It’s the Droid, a piece of furniture so cool, you’ll want it whether you grew up with Darth Vader, Yoda and C-3PO or not. Created by utterly inventive Hungarian ALTAR furniture, this “one and only love child of Star Wars pinball and R2D2” has snagged a 2015 A’Design Award and garnered – deservedly – lots of international attention. The object, a bona fide coffee table on wheels, is basically a vintage “Star Wars” pinball field housed in the body of an R2D2.

This next piece of info (get ready for total geek-out), might be the most exciting aspect of this amazing creation: It has a mini slide projector that displays “R2D2 in the Death Stars’ sewage.” It beeps, it blinks, it whirs, it pings (see video below), it took 321 hours to come alive, and it costs circa $13,000 (if still available), not counting shipping from Budapest. It’s epic. We rest our case.

Its creators, ALTAR furniture, have devoted themselves to rescuing pin ball machines after they die, imbuing them with a second, awesome coffee table life as “wonderfully complicated, meticulously planned and crafted sexy beings,” as they so eloquently write on their website.

Fruit Loops: 8 Circular Bowl Designs

Circular forms are a clear choice for storing the rounded forms of fruits – but these creative modern design ideas are anything but obvious. For starters, when someone asks you to pass them this vertical wooden fruit ‘bowl’ just give it a nudge and send it rolling their way – just don’t slip while sliding them the bananas! Imagine it making its way down an extra long hall-style dining table.

Another unexpected fruit bowl design is this nifty set of wood, metal and black-painted plastic half-bowls, also by Helena Schepens , a designer and artist from The Netherlands. While it may not have quite the same moves as the wheel-shaped bowl, it’s still quite dynamic. From tiny grapes to sizable pears and apples, each piece of fruit added to or subtracted from the mix changes the angle of the centerpiece, leading it to lean from one side to the other.
It’s so simple, yet it makes such a big impact. The design draws in the user and turns the vessel into an active part of the composition, requiring you to interact with it in a whole new way. You might just find yourself playing games with the balancing act, testing out how different kinds of fruits and fillers affect the way the bowl leans and moves.

To round out this list, pun intended, other designers have developed turn-style systems allowing you to rotate your fruit into place and pop it out of the mix (like the metal one shown on top or the white wall-hanging repositories at the bottom).
Still other designer fruit centerpieces use seemingly endless spirals and bottomless bowls to play on ideas of infinity and negative space – quite a lot of aesthetic thought put into such a simple decorative home object.

Heart-Shaped Carafe & Decanter Set

Take note, Debbie Harry: this is what most people would call a heart of glass. A literal one, anyway.
Made from the same transparent blown borosilicate glass found in mad-scientist labs (or regular ones, for that matter), this pair of water-and-wine-pouring devices might make you think twice before taking a drink just for their slight creep factor. Forget about sappy Valentine’s hearts – this one is shaped just like an anatomically correct human heart, with wine standing in for blood in one half and water keeping the other transparent.

Designed by Liviana Osti, ‘Cuore’ is hand made in Italy by glass blower Tommaso Colesanti and available in a limited edition series. It’s capable of holding a liter of water in one half and a liter of wine in the other. The designer’s interest in science likely played a role in the creation of such an unusual carafe concept; she has a bachelor’s degree in physics while also teaching arts and design at the Bauhaus University of Weimar in Germany and the Free University of Bolsano.

“Two glass carafes shaping a human heart when joined together. The heart is a reminder for the generally underestimated but essential role health plays in our lives. In order to prevent cardiovascular and blood pressure diseases we have to start with the root of the problem, our daily consume of food and beverage.”
“A wine decanter is built together with a water carafe. A half half coloured mix of red and white. Red wine stands for low pressure, water stands for high pressure. The organic heart shape has been developed into two different, stand-alone objects according to the natural division of ventricles.”

Three-Ring Service: Stackable 3-in-1 Condiment Holder

This interesting device bears a passing resemblance to a child’s ring-stacking toy, but it is far more sophisticated. The Stackable table set from Peleg Design combines three table condiments into one attractive, space-saving object that looks more like a sculpture than an ordinary kitchen item.

Central to the set and appearing as the bottom ring of the stack is a flat bottomed jar of olive oil. Its angled opening makes it easy to pour without spilling, and a rustic cork stopper contrasts with the very modern look of the rest of the set.

The other two rings are salt and pepper shakers. Maybe having two separate shakers and a bottle just for olive oil doesn’t take up much space, but this brilliant design saves at least a bit of space while making a table look sophisticated and even a little playful. Though the design might appear a little gimmicky at first glance, it’s actually just as functional as a more conventional set, if not more so. The space-saving stackable nature of the set makes it easy to keep your kitchen organized, too.
Founded in 2004 by Shahar Peleg, Peleg Design is known for the playfulness of its products. You can find all sorts of goofy and fun modern housewares at their website, though this particular object appears to be sold out.

Reversed Vessels Made of Cast Veggies

From potatoes, peppers and onions to pears, apples and oranges, we take the unique organic forms of fruits and vegetables for granted when we pick them up at the grocery store or slice them for a meal – these bowls, by comparison, are creative food-for-thought pieces that leave a new, unique and lasting impression.

Requiring no firing, these unique bowls made of powdered ceramic by Mischer’Traxler (via Dezeen)are as naturally unique as each fruit or vegetable that went into making them. The works individually reflect the embedded organic form of the objects pressed into them and their identities are reinforced by dyes added before the pressing and drying processes.

Each piece casts a new light on the plant matter that made it possible, from the smooth shapes and surface textures of citrus fruits to the rough and variegated and complex fractal patterns of cauliflower and everything in between. Because they do not need to be fired, these cast ceramic bowls can hold the shapes of otherwise heat-sensitive source materials.
Presented in Milan at FoodMarketo, a collaboration between Apartamento magazine and event design firm Designmarketo, Traxler’s “Reversed Volumes” are a fun new way to look at the shapes of common objects.

“The vessels highlight the various surfaces of nature and help to look at them from a different perspective,” says the artist. “They can be used for all kinds of food. The small bowls are ideal for ice cream and desserts, the aubergine works perfectly for serving olives, the melon for fruits and the cabbage is big enough for salads. The bowls were initially designed for FoodMarketo in 2010. After some months of small batch production within the studio, the project was developed further for serial production. Since 2013, they are produced and edited by PCM Design and available in selected shops worldwide and in PCM’s online shop.”

Pizza Box Transforms into Tableware

It always seems a little silly to take the pizza out of the box and put it on plates, then attempt to shove the intentionally strong and awkwardly-shaped cardboard container into a recycling bin or trash can. This brilliant-but-simple Green Box invention gives multiple new functions to this traditional staple of delivery around the world.

There are great green benefits to this transforming tableware design that reduces the need for excess dishes but it is also a simple, convenient and easy-to-manufacture redesign of something we take for granted – something most designers have (mistakenly) assumed for years was as well-designed as it could be. Seems like there’s a lesson to be learned in all of this.

One part of the box divides evenly into four plates that, because they are based on the size of the unit designed to contain the pizza, work out to hold about a quarter of the pizza each of course. Even better, the other half of the box folds into a shape that can store up to half of the remaining pizza in a convenient wedge, making it easy to fit this storage box back in the refrigerator with your leftovers.
This waste-reducing pizza box design goes a long way toward the zero waste gold standard — a lot farther than most pizza boxes, anyway. The best part is how easily GreenBox made this wonder of modern packaging happen. It’s just a matter of looking at existing materials in a new way and coming up with something smarter. The addition of a few perforations and a slightly edited shape are what bring this eco-friendly packaging design together.
“We like to think of it as the pizza box of the 21^st century,” says GreenBox.

4 in 1: Glassware for Any Beverage

Does it ever strike you as strange that we have so many objects dedicated to drinking? Unlike food, which comes in many consistencies, liquid is relatively uniform. But somehow, we’ve deemed it necessary to have at least a half-dozen different kinds of glassware in our cabinets, taking up precious space. Isn’t there a more efficient system that could cut back on all the clutter?
Versatile, universal glassware that adapts to the type of beverage you’re drinking might be the answer. For example, this multipurpose glassware design plays to different kinds of Connoisseur without compromising its essential shape or requiring that you store glassware for every occasion.

Simply want water? No stem or attachment is required for this most basic, day-to-day function. Shifting to a nice Malbec or fruity Rosé? A simple slender neck and base slot in, elegantly extending the core cup unit to make it a wine glass. Both actually look like modern drinking glasses you would want to buy separately – even if they didn’t offer these cool multifunctional shape-shifting capabilities.

For cognac drinkers, an angled base tilts the tableware to let it breath better – turning it into an effective side-tilted snifter. A baseless champagne stem is perfect for toasting-oriented, mobility-focused celebrations, essentially forcing you to keep it in your hand (as setting down your drink at the wrong time can mean missing the key toasts.)
With the cupboard space-saving “One Glass 4 Every Drink” concept design, designer Sven Milcent and Utopik Design Lab have arguably solved a basic drinkware problem, though whether or not it would work well in practice depends entirely on the connections – the interchangeable pieces are the physical and conceptual lynchpins that will make or break these (literally) in real life. Whether we’ll get a chance to ever find out by testing them ourselves remains to be seen, but clearly there’s a market for such a product.

Space Saving Multifunctional Knife

Modern kitchens have so much technology in them, one has to wonder sometimes how people lived without all this cookware – yet they did. These sleek and sharp-looking stainless-steel knives are an attempt to go back to a simpler, less-cluttered kitchen without compromising contemporary conveniences to which we have become accustomed. They’re basically like a multi tool for your kitchen, combining multiple functions into a small package that helps declutter your drawers.

Using the flat of the blade and/or the handle, each part of this three-piece space-saving kitchen set serves at least a second (if not a third) additional function – thus reducing the need for other conventional kitchenware. The six-inch knife includes a grater/crusher and herb-scooper; its four-inch sibling doubles as a vegetable peeler. The smallest in the set is a short three-and-a-half inch piece with a ‘decorating’ tool built into it. How many standard kitchen knives can do all this?

This BasicKnives project from Caroline Noordijk was part of a collaborative project between the RCA and BrAun to explore beyond-traditional ideas for simplifying kitchen cutlery design and enhancing the cooking experience with multi-functional chef tools and without compromising high-quality materials. Simple but rather ingenious, this knife set saves you space, materials, cost as well as the time it takes to flip between various implements.

“BasicKnives reinterperteds one of our most basic kitchen tools, the knife. It incorporates different (cutting) tools within the blade surface, making other tools in the kitchen drawer redundant. The BasicKnives project was a result of a collaboration project between the RCA and BrAun. The knives were also shown at the 50 year BrAun exhibition.”

Ingenious Mug Gives Tea Bags an Easy Squeeze

Just when you thought mugs were incapable of being further innovated, here comes a new and creative variant that simplifies that little act of squeezing that burst of flavor out of your teabag.

A play on slingshot, the SlingsHOT follows a similar pull-and-release motion as you draw the string up through a pre-cut slot in the side, which in turn puts pressure on your teabag while keeping it from popping entirely out.

Designed by Samir Sufi, this simple tweak means no more messing with fingers of spoons if you are the type (as this author is) who is inclined to get the most out of each and every teabag, but who never thought there could be a simpler way.

Whiskey Tasting Tech: Engineered Glass Provides the Perfect Sip

A proper whiskey-tasting glass is designed to direct the aromas up to your nose, since scent is such an integral part of appreciating the unique flavors of various varieties. Conventional whiskey tasting glassware narrows toward the top to hold in the scent, but can a few tweaks make the tasting process even more enjoyable? With a shape reminiscent of an oil lantern, this ‘whiskey tasting set’ by French designer Nicolas Brouillac adds a few extra features.

“The whiskey glass from Les impitoyables is designed to enhance all whiskeys and eaux-de-vie, such as Cognac and Armagnac,” says the designer. “With a distinctive wide bowl, this technical class will reveal the subtleties in the whisky, bringing out the aromas for an utterly indulgent tasting.”

The nose is just as narrow as those on most whiskey tasting glasses, but the trick to this glass is in both its metal base and a central dome that distributes the liquor in a circular shape within the bowl. Pour only enough whiskey in the glass to remain below the level of the dome, which divides the liquor to prevent an overpowering elevation of alcohol vapors to the nose.

The metal base will chill the whiskey for at least thirty minutes without watering it down, eliminating the need for ice. You just pop it into the freezer for a few hours before use.

Forget Multi-Tasking: Spectacularly Specialized Utensils

It seems safe to say that, outside of a finishing school or royal dinner, most of us stick with the basic silverware set for meals. Fork, spoon, butter knife, and maybe a sharp knife. Maybe even a salad fork if we want to get very fussy. But there was a time when silverware sets included an absurd number of devices, the functions of which were all but indiscernible to the casual user.

Designer Lee Ben David pokes fun at these specialized tools in her set of conceptual table tools called Very Specific. They include a delicate three-pronged grabber just for cherry tomatoes; a combination prong/scooper for plucking and eating artichoke leaves; a knife with two hinged prongs for cutting and then opening hot pieces of pita bread; a spaghetti fork with a clamp on one side to hold down unruly noodles; a combined knife and fork lever for scooping food onto the fork one-handed; and a device used solely for pushing edamame beans out of their pods.

The designer’s ideas go back to the almost-unbelievable designs of yore, when cutting fish with the wrong fork was seen as a serious mealtime offense. There was well and truly a piece of cutlery for every imaginable food, and polite people were expected to memorize their functions. Although cutlery isn’t nearly as laser-focused these days, this type of over-specialization can still be seen in the incredibly specific single-function kitchen tools we use for cooking and baking.

The Very Specific utensils are tongue-in-cheek design, but a few of the designs actually offer real solutions to mealtime problems. We would never give up the deep satisfaction of biting edamame pods to pop the beans out, but the spaghetti fork with attached prong is pure brilliance. The only design David is thinking of putting into production (though she may just be making another joke) is the one-handed knife/fork set, which would allow people to eat one-handed while holding a plate in the other hand.

Balancing Act: Elegant Water Jug Tilts to Serve

Part sculpture, part functional object, this water jug could stand as the centerpiece of your dining table in place of a vase of flowers. CAWA is an elegant twist on the standard means of serving water at the table, fitting a test-tube-like vessel into a curving wooden stand that can fill glasses with one simple flick of the wrist.

The design, by Lucas González, answers the questions “Why do you serve as we serve?” and “Why are water jugs as they are?” Traditionally, water jugs were made to be carried from one room to another, hence the typical shape that’s been in use for centuries.

CAWA looks at the purpose of a water pitcher at the dining table in a new way, reducing the act of refilling a glass to a single movement of the arm.

The half-circle cradling the glass vessel leans back on a sort of kickstand in resting position. Tilt it forward to use, and then tilt it back again when you’re done.

Inception Dish Drainer is a Flexible Little Manhattan

In the movie Inception, a strip of New York City rolls up on itself, with the streets and buildings ripping themselves from their earth-bound positions and rolling into the sky.

This scene was the inspiration behind the Inception dish strainer/desk organizer from designer Luca Nichetto. While visiting a friend’s office, Nichetto saw a small model of Manhattan on a desk and the idea took shape. The flexible silicone replica of Manhattan features simplified buildings of all shapes and sizes.

The protruding buildings work perfectly for holding up dishes as they air dry. But the silicone protuberances can also be used to hold mail or other office supplies. Model skyscrapers and the spaces between them are effective holders, bending but not collapsing between their weight.

Scoop Bowl: Flat-Edged Design Makes it Easier for Disabled People to Eat

For disabled people with muscular conditions or those who have only one hand, getting the last of the food out of a bowl can be a huge challenge. Designer Ryan Kirkpatrick addresses that problem with the Ceramic Scoop Bowl, a unique bowl with one flat edge that allows it to stand up and facilitate easier eating.

The bottom of the bowl features a rubber base that keeps it from slipping around on the table as users scoop their food out. The slightly sloped shape of the bowl helps the food naturally shift toward the flat edge, preventing liquidy foods like soup from becoming too shallow to scoop out.

When the user gets close to the end of a bowl of food, the bowl can then be tipped up to sit on its flat edge. The edge acts as a little plate, holding the food so that it is easily scooped up. The wide rim of the accessible bowl makes it easy for those with muscular conditions to handle and carry it.

Kirkpatrick calls himself “an industrial designer with an interest in inclusive design and repositioning products that people need, into objects that they desire.” His other designs include the Tacdial, a tactile analog wristwatch developed for the visually impaired so users can easily feel the current time.

The world could certainly use a whole lot more designers who create objects and spaces with people of all abilities in mind. This kind of “universal design” avoids excluding people with varying abilities or ghettoizing items designed specifically for their needs. It’s good to keep in mind that any able-bodied person could become disabled in an instant, requiring a drastic change in their surroundings and belongings, and that we all experience a decline in abilities as we age.

Swarm of Ants Appears to Invade a Beautiful Set of Fine China

Walking into your kitchen to see that an un-rinsed plate has attracted a horde of ants is a pretty disgusting surprise. For German artist Evelyn Bracklow of La Philie, seeing ants swarming a carelessly placed plate was a source of instant inspiration for her new series of hand-painted fine china.

The artist recognized that the sight of ants on otherwise beautiful dishes inspired a number of conflicting feelings: fascination, disgust, fear, and admiration all swirled inside her. She decided to recreate this fascinating scene on pieces of fine china.

Bracklow collected pieces of fine china and carefully, lovingly hand painted swarms of tiny realistic ants all over them. The first reaction upon seeing the pieces might be shock, amusement, or a creepy feeling, but the tiny painted pests are somehow delicate and beautiful against the backdrop of the china pieces.

The incredibly realistic ants are startlingly lovely, despite the initial recoil that they inspire. The artist calls it “a seductive horror,” which seems an apt title for such a shocking and inventive series. Each piece is unique and signed, and some are available on Etsy.

About the artist

“Evelyn Bracklow *1986 lives and works in Dortmund. In her work she negotiates the interfaces between art and design. She draws her material from everyday cultural practices and the daily handling of objects. In addition to ceramics of table culture – cups, plates, vases – she also deals with figurative objects. Bracklow paints over, inhabits and alienates the objects with ants. Whole insect states and busy individuals walk on the objects and crawl on the surface. The supposed pest creates irritation and negotiates the relationship between man and nature. The ant becomes corrective and provokes thoughts about values, appreciation and impermanence and thus becomes a direct reaction to social conditions.”

“But Bracklow is not only committed to the ant. And yet remains true to the theme of processing: In picture objects, she sticks thousands of filigree D-c-fix film strips onto the picture carrier. The material comes from the industry and is otherwise used in advertising lettering or the cladding of everyday objects. Layer by layer, nets, nests, and structures grow into dynamic objects on the surface. In neon colors, reflective, monochrome white or black, the snippets and fragments form a new context – they now appear almost organic and invite you to look at them multiple times.
