These changes rarely happen without comment from society. Fashion used to instigate uprisings and outrage, from the flapper dresses of the 1920s to the women’s trousers of the 30s, the wild zoot suits of the 40s and 50s, the denim jeans and daring miniskirts of the 60s, and the gaudy flower-powered fashions of the 70s. But that doesn’t stop designers from coming up with some of the weirdest clothes and accessories imaginable—nor does it stop at least a few people from trying them out.

Velvet Swimwear

Velvet has long been reserved for special occasions, but it’s now making a splash as the “it” fabric for swimwear. The silhouette of each velvet swimsuit may vary, from classic one-piece styles to strappy bikinis. If you thought velvet teddies were daring, hang on to your pearls, because this bathing suit trend is certainly hot.

Harness Shorts

The exact advantage of these “shorts,” may be in question, but that’s a moot point when it comes to fashion. High-waists are in vogue right now, and these shorts also have cutouts on all sides. Even the leanest body will curve out a bit under the fabric, accentuating its humanity. Maybe “Bulges Are Beautiful” will be the new runway mantra!

Ultra Narrow Bodysuits

For under $25, you can pick up a garment with hints of both lingerie and sportswear. Some people find them uncomfortable, but others love the freedom of motion and the daring lines. 5. Hiptipico

The Viva is a handmade unprocessed-leather backpack stitched and finely detailed in Guatemala. The company says its Hand-Crafted Collection showcases the local artisanal leather hand-stitching method and preserves indigenous culture.
Ten percent of online sales go to Hiptipico’s ‘Backpacks that Give Back’ scholarship program, which helps the children of its artisan partners attend an international preparatory school in Guatemala.

Plus, there’s no better combination for apparel than something that looks great and does the planet a world of good. The company has already expressed interest in experimenting with even more alternative materials in the near future to continue pushing for a sustainable future.

The €250 handmade-in-Europe vegan sneakers were available for pre-order all throughout March 2019, with initial deliveries expected to begin shipping at the end of April.

Thanks to the latest in green technology, there’s now a new option making its way onto the market that eliminates many of these concerns. It’s remarkably easy and eco-friendly to produce, looks and feels almost exactly like animal leather, and avoids producing a lot of the waste normally associated with the leather industry. It’s called “Mylo” and it’s made entirely from mushrooms.

The process of producing this intriguing new material begins with mycelium cells: the vegetative part of fungus most typically found growing underground like roots. Fungal mycelium consists of branching, thread-like strands that absorb nutrients and can self-assemble into dense mats.

Developed by a company called Bolt Threads, Mylo takes just days to produce by growing mycelium in beds of corn stalks, where they form an interconnected three-dimensional network. Once they’re ready, Bolt Threads compresses these mats to make a 2D material, after which they tan and dye it to produce the final product. According to the company, Mylo is strong and abrasion-resistant with a warm, supple feel and a ton of leather-like qualities.

They add: “Our friends at Ecovative pioneered this mycelium fabrication technology, which literally grew out of the great work they’ve been doing in creating soft flexible foams. We were blown away and thrilled when they agreed to allow us to help develop it into a commercially viable new material. We’ve established a long-term partnership with Ecovative to optimize this technology and put processes in place to produce commercial-ready Mylo™ material and bring products to market that consumers will love.”

Last fall, Bolt Threads launched the Mylo special edition of the Chester Wallace Driving Bag: a multi-pocketed tote that fused the innovative leather alternative with high-quality design. The world’s first commercially available Mylo product, the tote started at $400 and was only available in limited quantities. While its Kickstarter campaign has long since closed, it’s possible that the bag will become available for purchase again. In any case, it’s just one of many Mylo offerings in the making.

It looks a bit like something out of an old mid-century James Bond movie – a white sphere that unfolds into an on-demand work station, perhaps manned by minions or even their overlord.

The Globus by Artfiort collapses into a minimalist ball on steel supports, then extends and flips to reveal a comfortably encompassing leather seat and work surface (as well as vertical or horizontal screen for looking and touching).

This luxury modular bed by Hugo de Ruiter may be the first truly novel idea for an adaptable bed-and-couch combination seen in quite some time. A focus shift is the key: instead of forcing the main mattress area to fold, twist or otherwise contort itself into a new configuration, the flexible modular headboard makes all the changes you need.

The result isn’t exactly a typical sofa, but the movable leather elements do let you use the space in different-but-similar ways, for lounging together, reading apart, or anything in between. Designer Hugo de Ruiter created this for De Sede, the Swiss luxury leather furniture manufacturer whose designs are in high demand on exclusive sites like 1stDibs. Bridle leather, saddle stitched, with custom metal fasteners … it all sounds so elegant, which makes the uniquely bent and angled shapes of these suitcases and chests and pop out all the more.

Using such traditional techniques and materials, it is tough to set creative work apart from ordinary vintage and retro objects. Hence the twisting and curving found in each piece by British luggage and handbag brand Williams.

Naturally the pragmatist will object to the offbeat forms they take, but after buying such a fine work would you really toss it carelessly into a trunk, let alone fly with it on an airplane? Probably not – many of these are as much decor as they are travel cases, and could of course be crafted to fit individual shelves, steps and other home spaces.

Some smaller hand-held works, though, may be well-suited to making a splash at an office or other business affair – conventional enough to be professional, but artsy enough to create a lasting impression.

Sarah, also runs a series of short courses from the workshop where you can learn to make your own leather goods. The making process is extremely labor intensive with each piece of leather being cut by hand and constructed individually using traditional techniques, while maintaining the highest level of quality. All of the products are made from the highest quality, English Bridle leather, sourced from Northamptonshire, where it is finished by hand by experienced craftsmen. All of our fittings are cast in one of the last remaining foundries in the UK. British materials can be more expensive but we believe strongly that they reinforce our dedication to quality and truly British designs.”
