At this point, IKEA might be just as famous for DIY hacks of its products as it is for its confusing assembly instructions. Thousands of brilliant IKEA hacks have repurposed the Swedish retailer’s flat-pack furniture and other items into entirely new creations, from imaginative custom cabinetry to wacky sculptural objects. Now, a YouTuber has completed what he calls the “ultimate IKEA hack,” making a six-string guitar using nothing but IKEA furniture and home goods. As you’ll see in this video, it sounds a lot better than you might expect.

YouTuber Tchiks Guitars says he started the project as a joke. “I remember going upstairs and telling my wife, ‘I’m gonna make a guitar out of Zoé’s old bed.’ She rolled her eyes to the ceiling and asked me, ‘Why?’” It’s a fair question, but the YouTuber proved his creative recycling idea was worthwhile, as silly as it sounded at first. He used wood salvaged from his six-year-old daughter’s old crib (IKEA’s Stuva cot) as well as a Henriksdal chair and Lack shelf to create the guitar’s top and back.

The intrepid upcycler made the fretboard of the guitar from a picture ledge, the jack output plate form a Lilangen door handle, the strap buttons from a Kallax cupboard knob, and the tone and volume knobs from an Aptilig chopping board — all items you can find at IKEA. You wouldn’t guess any of this from looking at the finished product, of course.

“This idea came to me while I was making a Brian May’s Red Special replica: while I was following the footsteps of Dr. May, like anyone who’s ever made a Red Special I guess, I kept asking myself the following questions: ‘what the ….?’, ‘how did he …?’, ‘wait a minute …’, ‘no way, that’s brilliant!.’ Having access to the plans felt a little bit like cheating so I started wondering how I would personally do it in 2022? e.g design and build a guitar from scratch, using nothing but what’s available around me.”

“Truth is, ever since the Electric Shelf 335 became viral (4 million views, thank you), I’ve been wanting to make something like this,” he says. “In my original design, I was trying to emulate an actual solid body guitar, so I had to find a way to make bent sides, which is not an easy thing to do when all you have is stuff from IKEA. Another problem I had was that, to my knowledge, the only tone wood that IKEA uses is acacia, which they use in some of their outdoor furniture (and I don’t have any of those at home). Anyway, I kept finding excuses not to make the final jump, but the Red Special really opened up my eyes: Brian May taught me that they are no rules, as he demonstrated by making a legendary guitar with a body that is essentially pine and oak.”

The YouTuber and amateur guitar builder first started experimenting with unusual materials during COVID lockdowns in Belgium in April 2020. His usual lumber store was closed, so he decided to make a guitar out of wood from an old shelf. Since then, he’s made several more DIY guitars, all impressive in their own ways. In addition to subscribing to his YouTube channel, you can also follow Tchiks Guitars’ creations on Instagram @tchiksguitars.

The post The Ultimate IKEA Hack?

As part of a bold advertising stunt during Berlin’s July 7th through 9th Premium Fashion Week, German DIY brand Hornbach stuck a swimming pool in a giant pair of sneakers. Collaborating with German shoe store “43halb,” Hornbach’s “Sneaker Pool” was over eight feet tall, 16 feet wide, and weighed almost a ton. The massive kicks were modeled after the iconic Adidas ZX 10000s, with great attention given to replicating every detail. White carpeting mimicked the soft fabric of the shoe uppers, while wire mesh filled in for the sneakers’ webbed material. Stretches of blue tile made up the detailing at the back of the heel, and artificial grass rugs were laid under gray rubber sheets to complete the sides.

The project fit with the Home and Garden store’s mission to “encourage people to be as creative as possible, develop their own DIY projects, and set themselves no limits.” The project was especially impressive “because the shoe, including the pool, is made entirely of materials that are available from Hornbach,” the company explained in a press release.

“With the help of assembly instructions, anyone could build furniture at home,” it continued. “With the Sneaker Pool, Hornbach is taking a step into the sneaker scene.”

While that might seem like a strange direction for a hardware chain to take, off-the-wall advertising is the norm for Hornbach. “Sneakers and pool don’t go together thematically? We say: Of course it fits! Crazy projects are in our DNA! With the Hornbach Sneaker Pool, we show how far the current love of sneakers can go.”

Earlier this year, the DIY brand teamed up with production agency Heimat on a zany two-minute commercial featuring neglected yard plants that abandoned their native soil to take a raucous joy ride to Hornbach. On the way, they run over garbage cans, compete in streetcar races, and get ticketed by a police officer.

“There’s a bit of anarchy,” Heimat founder Guido Heffels says of the brand’s approach to advertising. “A bit of giving people a good feeling whenever they create, and whatever they work on.”

The company is no stranger to collabs either, having most recently worked with Chinese visual artist Ai Weiwei, “who developed a complete work of art from DIY materials to recreate at home.” Before that, they worked with “Danish designer Sigurd Larsen and Japanese architect Yo Shimada [to design] pieces of furniture purely from DIY materials.”

In addition to working with shoe store 43halb, the hardware brand also enlisted production company Neulant van Exel for help in assembling the enormous footwear fixture. The giant Sneaker Pool was unveiled at an exclusive launch event, garnering comments that ranged from “Sensational!” to “Kinda bizarre” to “Just amazing!” At least a few guests were allowed to try out the pool during the gala.

During the event, the company explained, “The Hornbach Sneaker Pool is a tongue-in-cheek reminder that the outdoor pool season is in full swing and that anything is possible with the wide pool range from Hornbach.”

They added, “For Hornbach, sneakers and DIY are both means of creative self-expression. This playful and colossal project merges the two outlets.”

The post Berlin Fashion Week’s Coolest Couture?

Small details can make a big difference when it comes to the look of your home. Architectural accents like molding, trim, columns, ceiling medallions, and built-in bookcases add character, a sense of history, and visual interest to interior spaces. But don’t despair if your home doesn’t already have these elements, even if you don’t have a lot of money to spend. Sometimes, all it takes is a little paint or wallpaper to create the illusion of expensive accents.

Check out these 7 cheap and easy ways to fake architectural details:

Accentuate the Positive

Start by searching your home for existing architectural details you’d like to play up. Got an interesting front door? Paint it a bright color inside and out. Original wood trim around the doors and windows? Give it a boost with some furniture polish or shift the color with oil stain, which doesn’t require extensive sanding before use. Call attention to a cool ceiling with an attention-grabbing light fixture. If you have a fireplace, make it the centerpiece of the space by painting it (or the area around it) with a color that strongly contrasts the surrounding walls.

Faux Trim Work

If your space is completely lacking any interesting trim and you don’t have the budget or inclination to add it, there’s an easy fix: add strategic bands or blocks of paint to create the illusion of molding. You can make ceilings look higher and windows wider simply with a contrasting accent color, as explained by This Old House. You can even fake crown molding, panels, chair rails, and wainscoting with nothing more than paint and tape, as illustrated here.

DIY Ceiling Medallions

Decorative ceiling medallions instantly elevate the look of any room, and you might be surprised by how easy they are to install. Available at home improvement stores for as little as $20, they’re often made of PVC and come in a variety of styles. Just paint them whatever color you like and glue them up with construction adhesive to call attention to your favorite pendant lamps or chandeliers. Get a tutorial at Room for Tuesday.

Wainscoting with Wallpaper

The price of wood is still sky-high, so installing real bead board wainscoting is a lot harder to fit into a tight budget right now. But did you know you can get textured foam wallpaper that’s almost indistinguishable from the real thing? Wayfair has 3D embossed pre-pasted wallpaper rolls that you simply moisten, apply, and paint. Milton and King also offers wainscoting wallpaper in a more formal Georgian-style print, though it isn’t 3D. You’ll want to top it off with real chair rail or picture rail, but if you’re only doing a single room, it doesn’t add up to much.

Add Salvaged Accents

If you aren’t already in on the secret of architectural salvage shops, find some in your area immediately. These shops accept salvaged wood, trim, windows, doors, hardware, and much more from remodel or demolition projects and resell them for much less money than the new items cost. You never know what you’ll find — grand columns, pristine Victorian cabinetry, midcentury modern details, and other accents can completely transform the character of your space for a modest investment.

Fake a Fancy Ceiling

If you already have picture rail or you’re interested in adding some, here’s an easy way to fake a tray ceiling: extend the ceiling paint down to the rail. Greenhill Renovation demonstrates how gorgeous this look can be on Instagram with forest green on the walls contrasting with white picture rail, crown molding, and ceiling paint. No rail? Again, you can fake one with a stripe of contrasting paint.

Chalkboard paint is another interesting way to add details, though it takes a bit more effort. Artist Rajiv Surendra painted the walls and ceiling with it, then used white chalk to draw on architectural elements.

Faux Built-In Elements

IKEA’s inexpensive and widely available Billy bookcase is a great starting point for the look of built-in shelving without the high price tag. It comes in several heights, and you can group together as many as you like to fit your space. One enterprising couple mixed them with IKEA Sektion kitchen base cabinets, spaced them all evenly using 2x4s, and then added crown molding and trim. The result looks just as expensive as the $9,000 they were quoted for a custom job, but it cost them just $1,500.

The post 7 Cheap and Easy Ways to Add Architectural Details to Your Home first appeared on Dornob.

Quebec resident Leigh Partington and her husband Mark have long dreamed of returning to a small village in the Eastern Townships outside Montreal. Not only did Leigh grow up in Georgeville, where most of her family still lives, her father and grandfather also built many of the homes in the community. Early in the pandemic, the couple decided to sell the cottage they owned about 45 minutes away and purchase a plot of land in Georgeville to build their own dream residence. Working on a budget with help from friends and family, they designed a beautiful custom home that recreates the feel of a cozy English cottage.

Leigh and Mark first bought a shipping container and modified it into a comfortable (albeit cramped) place to live during the building process — no small feat in its own right. Leigh’s father worked on their new home with his crew during the week while Leigh, a high school teacher, and Mark, a marketing director, went to work. On weekends, the couple took on whatever tasks they could to speed the process along.

The design changed more than a few times along the way, as Leigh explained in a feature on Apartment Therapy (with photos by Olga Wrezel). The cost of many building materials have skyrocketed throughout the pandemic, leading to both hard choices and ingenuity to make things work. They had to sacrifice features that would have been nice, like floor-to-ceiling windows, and overcome disagreements about the interior styling. At first, Mark envisioned a modern minimalist interior, but Leigh wanted to bring in colors and textures that give it a slightly homier, more rustic feel, including the softly shifting shades of natural lime paint and plenty of wood.

Throughout the many phases of designing and building the home, one essential element remained the same. Leigh and Mark were determined to give pride of place to a painting by their friend, up-and-coming Montreal artist Dan Climan. Before they even broke ground, they made sure the proportions of the living room would be just right to put the painting on display.

Leigh explains: “Our cottage captures the idea that you inherit much from your parents and family genetically, and that as adults you have to build on it to grow as a person. This cottage was truly a family endeavor. My father spent countless hours helping, my mother would come randomly to help paint siding or bring cookies, and my aunts would do the same. We spent hours chatting about the past and the future, listening to their suggestions (sometimes ignoring their suggestions), and building something that was us, but also them.”

“My husband loves random art (he had a friend who is an artist paint Oscar the Grouch under the wooden toilet seat) and so we have many different styles within our attempt at an English cottage, but it is that ‘eccentricity’ that captures us. I chose lime paint and a pale brown palette for the walls and rooms as my homage to English country houses (or at least how I picture them in my mind). This is a place of relaxation and our palette certainly helps us achieve that.”

Ultimately, the home is a tranquil marriage of clean, simple lines, natural materials, and gorgeous views of the surrounding forests. It’s a great example of how budget constraints can actually produce a more satisfying result. The owners were able to take a hands-on role in the process and allow it to evolve naturally as they went.

The post A Quebec Couple Built This Cozy Minimalist Cottage on a Budget first appeared on Dornob.

Move over, macramé. Tufted textile creations are the next big thing to adorn the walls of homes around the world. No longer limited to rugs, hand-tufted decor combines color, pattern, artistic motifs, and fluffy textures for fun and quirky results. Not only is this artsy interior decorating trend all over TikTok and Instagram, it’s also popping up everywhere from Etsy to Urban Outfitters. If you’re feeling crafty, you can even get in on the action yourself.

What is Tufted Wall Art?

The COVID lockdowns of 2020 inspired a whole lot of creativity and DIY endeavors, including hand-tufted rugs. TikTok users first sparked the trend after rediscovering the tufting gun, a yarn stitching tool that makes it easy to make rugs in your own designs. The rugs represented a whole new way to express your style and personality at home, creating incredibly unique tufted rugs you could never find in stores.

Soon, crafters realized the uses of a tufting gun extended beyond rugs. They started tufting all kinds of things, including jackets and wall hangings. When you see how gorgeous some tufted rugs are — like the floral Tufted Jardin Rug from Anthropologie and the Loloi Optimism Sunset Rug — you can see why people would want to hang these up in a more prominent location. Most tufted rugs and wall hangings are pretty interchangeable though, so you could use them either way.

How to Add Tufted Wall Art to Your Home

Tufted wall art comes in virtually every style you can think of, including more traditional fringed tapestries, painterly works, cartoonish motifs, and abstract compositions. You’ll find the full spectrum on Etsy, ranging from small creations that cost as little as $25 to oversized works of art with price tags over $1,000. We love the tufted flower and vase piece by Molly Pilkington, Punch Needle characters by Meg Design Studio TR, and the vibrant Butterfly Eye by Jaime Derringer. Retailers like West Elm, World Market, and Overstock also have options that are a little more on the commercial side.

Integrating tufted wall art into your home is easy: just treat these objects like you would framed works of art. Use them to bring in a pop of color or pattern, draw the eye to a certain area, or introduce a whole lot of character and personality to a blank wall. Mix and match tufted works in smaller sizes, or work them into a gallery wall alongside your favorite framed photos, drawings, and paintings. The nice thing about tufted decor is its textural appeal. Don’t be surprised if your guests want to reach out and touch it!

DIY Tufted Textiles

Who cares if you’re never as good at tufting as artists like Caroline Rose Kaufman (who makes some of the coolest tufted wall hangings around)? It’s fun just to experiment and try something new. And who knows, maybe you’ll find that you’re a tufting genius after all.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Tufted wall art creations by Caroline Rose Kaufman.
Tufting was once a niche interest when supplies were hard to come by. But the growing popularity of this art has led to a proliferation of tufting kits that make it easy to try your hand at DIY tufted decor. You can find tufting starter kits ranging from $180 to $365 at Amazon, Tuft Love, and Tuft the World.

The post How to Get In on the Tufted Wall Art Trend (and DIY Your Own!) first appeared on Dornob.

Designers, ignore the whims of TikTok at your own risk, because the app’s young users are fueling some of the biggest interior design trends of the year. In the past, that’s included cottagecore, DIY rug tufting, and ultra-organized pantries. Now, we’re seeing a fresh wave of trending hashtags relating to the home, and some of them are truly surprising.

Coastal Grandma

Image via Purple Cherry Architects

You just never know what’s going to blow up on TikTok next. Would you have thought, for instance, that teenagers would see Diane Keaton’s home in the 2003 movie Something’s Gotta Give as interior design inspiration? The trend is called “coastal grandma,” and it’s all about creating a beachy, relaxed yet clean and organized vibe that says “yes, we have money.” 26-year-old TikToker Lex Nicoleta claims to have coined the phrase, and her channel is loaded with both tips for achieving the aesthetic and surprising references ranging from Reese Witherspoon to Oprah.

Natural linen textiles and neutral tones form the backdrop for this style, which is accented with vaguely coastal themed accessories like throw pillows and wicker baskets. Amber lamps, fresh floral displays, and lightweight curtains softly billowing in the breeze complete the effect. Much of this trend actually draws from Hamptons-style decor, so be sure to check out our guide to the classic coastal style.

#Cluttercore

Image via The Apartment Copenhagen

Hold onto your hairpin legs, because midcentury modern is over, according to Gen Z. Considering that it’s been the ultimate interior design style goal for several generations now, we shouldn’t be too surprised. Also out is the kind of aseptic minimalism that makes you feel like you’re in a hospital instead of a home. Instead, young trendsetters are embracing a kind of lived-in maximalism that conveys the fact that a real person occupies the space.

The point isn’t to fill your house with a bunch of junk you don’t need. It’s to surround yourself with things you love and use. The goal is a sort of curated mess, or a feast of eye candy that gives your guests something new to look at each time they visit. #Cluttercore has been a thing for a while now, and it’s not showing any signs of going away. But don’t fret, minimalists — the pendulum will undoubtedly swing back in your direction sooner or later.

The Cloud Couch

After it was spotted in the homes of Kendall Jenner and other celebrities, Restoration Hardware’s Cloud Sofa spurred a frenzy of TikTok lust. There’s just one problem: it retails at over $4,000 per section, and if you want the whole thing, it clocks in at $12,000. Designer Timothy Oulton envisioned it as the ultimate sofa with a corner, an armless section, and an ottoman, and central to its coziness is a set of oversized pillows to nestle into. The couch exudes both comfort and luxury, and it fits right into the Coastal Grandma aesthetic.

If the price is too high, you can find some considerably more affordable Cloud Couch duplicates (or “dupes,” as they’re known on TikTok). One of the best is the Ever Slipcovered Sofa by Leanne Ford, available at Crate + Barrel for $2,199.

DIY Paint Hacks

Paint is the ultimate way to transform a space: it’s cheap, anyone can pull it off, and it makes a massive impact. Designers like Danielle Nagel of Dani Dazey LA and duo @verygaypaint demonstrate how color and pattern can make even the most uninspiring spaces pop and express loads of personality. Nagel’s aesthetic also incorporates maximalism and 70s decor, two more popular TikTok trends.

One specific example is the painted fridge trend that’s currently inspiring TikTokers to turn their boring kitchen appliances into custom creations. At Home with Ashley demonstrates with a pastel striped theme, and Jess Maple gives hers a chalkboard paint makeover.

#PlantMom

Young millennials and Gen Z have taken older generations’ love for houseplants and turned it into a lifestyle. Just check out the hashtag #plantmom on TikTok to get an idea of what this means. There are two components to this trend: using large quantities of houseplants as decor, and caring for them like you would beloved pets. We’re not talking about tucking a plant in here or there for visual interest. The idea is to fill the space with enough greenery to almost feel like you’re outside.

The popularity of this trend exploded during the pandemic, when people were stuck indoors with little to do and lacking a connection to the natural world outside. On TikTok, the #plantmom hashtag will not only net inspiration for incorporating live plants into your interior decor, it’ll teach you how to meet their needs and diagnose problems like nutrient deficiencies. TikTokers Laneys First and Regan Kastner are great places to start for all the plant content you crave.

The post Top 5 TikTok Interior Design Trends of Spring 2022 first appeared on Dornob.

Our idea of what a tiny house can be has really evolved over the last decade. Countless projects have proven you can still have all the comforts of a standard-size home in a smaller package, and that these scaled-down abodes can be incredibly stylish, to boot. The YouTube channel Living Big in a Tiny House is a great place to find wildly diverse tiny homes all around the world, and its number one most popular video featuring a jet-black ultramodern home on wheels has racked up over 48 million views. Built by couple Lisa Tranter and Matt Hobbs for just $90,000, the tall and narrow home was assembled in just three months.

Tranter has been fascinated by tiny homes for years and always hoped to build one of her own. Once she met Matt, a plumber who now owns his own bathroom and kitchen renovation company, she was ready to get started. The couple purchased a plot of land with beautiful views of the surrounding Blue Mountains and got right to work, detailing their building process on Instagram.

“Just because your house is small doesn’t mean you have to skip out on the finer things,” the couple says. That much is evident in their build, which includes a spacious living room, full size kitchen, bathroom, fireplace, and even a stairway leading to two separate sleeping lofts at either end of the house. They wanted standard size appliances, so they built the kitchen around them, tucking the refrigerator and range beneath the stairway leading to the sleeping loft. The kitchen also includes a farmhouse sink, a long waterfall-style counter, high cabinets, lots of built-in lighting, and a row of operable windows to let in the fresh air.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Lisa Tranter checks her computer on a cozy lofted guest bed inside her ultramodern DIY tiny home.
Diagonal wood floors transition seamlessly into hexagonal tile in the bathroom, where a huge louvered window blurs the lines between indoors and out. The bathroom also contains a dual vanity and a double shower with three shower heads, sliding glass doors, and a wide window for views of the scenery. Upstairs, the master loft has a king-size bed with two side tables and a skylight, and a walkway leads over the living room to the second loft, which contains a guest bed. This bed, too, has its own skylight, and both peer over the edge at the wood stove below. Does it seem like they’re lacking any little luxuries to you?

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Expansive cat patio area attached to the ultramodern DIY tiny home.
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that they have a massive deck that effectively triples their living space in this temperate climate. The outdoor living area is covered by a custom black sunshade that matches the black corrugated steel siding on the minimalist house. The elevated deck is definitely a bonus. Pet lovers will note an awesome extra feature: a huge mesh-covered patio out back, accessed by a cat door in the house.

Since building their own home, the couple has founded a tiny house building company called Tailored Tiny Co., which specializes in tailoring custom-made small spaces to their clients’ needs and lifestyles.

The post Australian Couple Builds a Stylish DIY Tiny Home in Just 3 Months first appeared on Dornob.

The holiday season is upon us, and that means lots of cookie making, family gatherings, and all-around warm, cozy feelings. While most of us are super busy this time of year trying to get everything ready for the Big Day, those creative DIYers, bakers, and builders among us (you know who you are!) are using their skills to whip up gingerbread houses that rival the real world’s most whimsical and design-forward buildings.

Today’s gingerbread houses go way beyond the simple creations many of us attempted in school. We’ve scoured the internet to find some of this year’s best, and there’s festive holiday inspo to draw from every single one. Who knows? You may even feel moved to create a modern gingerbread marvel of your own.

Classic Christmas Cottage

Who needs a gingerbread house when you can have a full-blown gingerbread cottage? This one from @ellagracebakes is both festive and fanciful, creating a lovely holiday scene. Bonus points for the brickwork detail and edible patchwork entryway.

The Devil’s in the Details

Is it still a classic gingerbread house if it’s not entirely edible? If it looks as good as this stunning house from @mygingertable, the answer is a resounding yes. While the house itself is all gingerbread, the other details are painstakingly recreated using a variety of other materials. No matter how you look at it, the result is a gorgeous and impressive edible delight.

Simple Yet Elegant

Many of today’s best gingerbread houses are eschewing the kitschy (and sometimes gaudy), colorful candies of yore and instead focusing on the elaborate construction of the structure itself, and this is certainly true of this creation from @bakerloocakes. Intricate icing deliciously highlights the details, while the height and design of the gingerbread is imposing without being overwhelming. A perfect pairing!

It Takes a Village

What’s better than one gingerbread house? An entire gingerbread village, of course! This one from @sanna_hederstedt is the real deal, complete with adorable detailed interiors. Look closely and you’ll see tables in the café, miniature baked goods, and even a tiny gum ball machine. This super-impressive offering definitely proves that it’s what inside that counts, even in the world of gingerbread.

Life Imitates Art

Sometimes gingerbread houses are inspired by real-life architectural marvels, and these are some of the best.

The Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco is lovingly recreated in edible splendor in this model by @grownasswomenwithdinosaurs.

Big tech companies like Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Google have long fought against proposed legislation that would make it easier for customers to repair broken devices. But as toxic e-waste piles up around the world, many people are getting sick of buying expensive gadgets that are essentially disposable after just a few years of use.

This month, the growing “Right to Repair” movement scored a big victory: Apple has finally agreed to allow users to self-service their products.

Apple’s New Self-Service Repair Program

Set to begin in the U.S. in early 2022, the new Apple Self Service Repair program will provide access to necessary parts and tools to do repairs on Apple devices yourself. The first phase will focus on “the most commonly serviced modules,” including the camera, display, and battery for the iPhone 12 and 13. Additional iPhone parts, as well as those for Mac computers with M1 chips, will come later.

The process requires customers to review the repair manual first, then order the parts and tools they need (the same used by experts at Apple Genius Bars) in a new section of the Apple store. When they return the used parts for recycling, they’ll get a credit toward the purchase. Provided they follow instructions, self-repairers won’t void the product’s warranty.

That doesn’t mean just anyone will be able to perform complex repairs on delicate electronics, of course. Per Apple’s press release, “Self Service Repair is intended for individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. For the vast majority of customers, visiting a professional repair provider with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair.”

Better Access to Service Locations with Genuine Apple Parts

Finding authorized repair shops has been part of the problem all along. Historically, Apple has gone to great lengths to limit repairs to a select few approved (and often overpriced) service providers, claiming they were protecting customers from unscrupulous businesses. But the company also admitted that they were protecting their own “proprietary hardware,” going so far as to create special screws that make it impossible for customers to open their own devices. Plus, authorized repair shops are typically harder to find in low-income communities, putting a greater financial burden on people who really can’t afford to replace their devices.

The problem was significant enough to get President Biden’s attention. He signed an executive order in July encouraging the Federal Trade Commission to require companies to allow DIY repairs, and the FTC ultimately adopted a new policy granting consumers the right to repair their own devices. “These types of restrictions can significantly raise costs for consumers, stifle innovation, close off business opportunity for independent repair shops, create unnecessary electronic waste, delay timely repairs, and undermine resiliency,” said FTC Chair Lina M. Khan.

Apple points to its Independent Repair Provider program, launched in 2019, as a significant step toward making repairs more accessible to consumers. The company has nearly doubled the number of service providers since then, with about 2,800 providers in 200 countries. While that’s definitely an important achievement, allowing DIY repair is a crucial step toward reducing the whopping 57.4 million metric tons of electronic waste generated each year.

Next, let’s pressure companies to actually take full responsibility for the entire life cycle of their products, including responsible recycling overseen by an independent third party. It’s the only way we’re going to get corporations to quit producing disposable products for good.

The post Apple Will Finally Allow Customers to Fix Their Own Devices first appeared on Dornob.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and it’s time to get your space into the giving spirit — whether you’re hosting a fun Friendsgiving this year or having some loved ones over for quality holiday time. But how do you make your home into the perfect Turkey Day haven without an overabundance of cornucopias?

The best way to get your home holiday-ready is to exercise your own creativity, and that’s where these DIY projects come into play. Giving your decorations a personal touch is the perfect way to welcome friends and family into your home during Thanksgiving. With the help of these inventive ideas, there will be plenty for everyone to be thankful for.

Creative Corn Wreath

Nothing says “fall” like this corn husk wreath. Simply peel back dried corn husks to reveal the vibrant colors beneath, secure the corn around your choice of craft ring (available at stores like Michaels) with a glue gun, and voila! Your home is instantly transformed. Want to make it even easier? Grab this cute kit from Etsy, which includes mini corn, supplies, and easy-to-follow directions.

Spruce Up Those Pumpkins

Don’t get rid of those Halloween pumpkins just yet! Put them in Thanksgiving mode with a little DIY magic in the form of metallic paint. Grab some at your local craft store to glam up your Turkey Day table. Not into metallics? Add in some floral branches instead (in fall colors, of course!). Want to make it extra? Purchase some colorful fall blooms to weave among your pumpkins for the perfect eye-catching centerpiece.

The sleek, sexy flying cars of our sci-fi dreams are still (more than likely) a few decades away from becoming a reality – but that doesn’t mean we can’t take to the skies in our own personal vehicles as soon as next year. A new eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft by Jetson Aero fittingly called The Jetson not only makes it surprisingly easy to use your driveway or backyard in place of a runway, it’s a DIY kit that you put together yourself, like an unusually complex piece of IKEA furniture.

“Jetson is a Swedish company with a mission to change the way we travel,” reads the company’s website. “We aim to make the skies available for everyone with our safe personal electric aerial vehicle. Our prototype ‘proof of concept’ was finished in the spring of 2018, and until now we have been very busy working on a consumer-friendly version. That project resulted in Jetson ONE, a commercially available personal electric aerial vehicle that you can own and fly. Jetson was founded by Peter Ternström and Tomasz Patan in 2017. We intend to make everyone a pilot.”

Designed for adventure, this open-body flier with eight motors is to flying cars what quad bikes are to standard vehicles, in that it’s more for fun than practicality (at least for now). The Jetson is a single-occupant eVTOL that can take off and land virtually anywhere, making it an accessible entry point into the world of flying vehicles. Its style and usage has drawn comparisons to podracers, the small, single-occupant aircraft featured in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The Jetson weighs just 190 pounds, takes up 9.3 x 7.8 x 3.3 feet during flight, and folds down into a three-foot-square package when not in use, so you can easily stow it away in the garage or even a closet in between flights.

The Jetson’s racecar-inspired lightweight carbon and aluminum fiber body is lifted into the air by eight motors mounted co-axially on four arms, producing a total power output of 88kW. Though it can technically go faster, flight speed is limited to 63 mph by the vehicle’s built-in safety software. The pilot uses a three-axis joystick and throttle lever to control the aircraft, so it’s pretty easy to learn. The maximum pilot weight is just 210 pounds, however, which does present a limitation for some. You get 20 minutes of flight time per charge on the high discharge lithium-ion battery, which you presumably recharge via cable and a standard power outlet, though this info isn’t currently specified.

Obviously, safety is a big concern for any flying vehicle, and the Jetson has numerous features that aim to make it as low-risk as a personal aircraft like this can be. Another racecar-inspired feature is the safety seat that keeps you snugly strapped in during flight, while LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors monitor the terrain below. Sensors help the pilot avoid obstacles, and triple-redundant flight computers will hover the aircraft and perform emergency functions if for some reason the pilot loses control. The Jetson can fly safely with the loss of one motor, and it even has its own ballistic parachute with rapid deployment time in the event of an extreme failure.

At $92,000 USD, the Jetson isn’t exactly a small investment, but it certainly costs a heck of a lot less than owning your own airplane or helicopter. It’s clearly in demand, too. Last year, Jetson Aero offered pre-sales for the entire 2022 production run, which sold out within weeks to clients in California, Sweden, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, and other countries. Two spots have already been reserved for 2023 vehicles, but others are still available for a down payment of $22,000. The kit you’ll receive contains everything you need, along with detailed build instructions.

The post This Exciting DIY Flying Car Kit Will Make Star Wars-Style “Podracing” Possible as Early as 2022 first appeared on Dornob.

The Tesla Cybertruck won’t hit the market until 2022, and when it does, it’ll cost at least $39,900. But if you’re in a huge hurry to cruise around in one of the weirdest looking vehicles to be released by a major carmaker in decades, you could follow CJ Cromwell’s example and make your own. Sort of. The “Plybertruck” is exactly what it sounds like: a hazy replica of the Cybertruck with paneling made of plywood instead of stainless steel. That’s about where the similarities between the two vehicles end. Underneath its modified exterior, this ridiculous DIY project is really a first-generation Acura MDX.

Opinions are mixed on whether the real Cybertruck is a massive step forward in vehicle aesthetics or more akin to the vaguely car-shaped drawing your five-year-old might bring home from school. But one would imagine that when the Cybertruck is spotted on the road, it’ll look a little more pulled together than its hillbilly cousin. The Plybertruck is crudely assembled, its body covered in visible nails. But that’s all part of the fun.

Cromwell designed the car explicitly for the Gambler 500, a mostly off-road rally in which “cheap, impractical, and fun vehicles” roam through the countryside to pick up trash and remove abandoned vehicles and boats. Participants are supposed to spend no more than $500 on the vehicle they enter in the 500-mile rally, which began as a challenge to see how far cars that cheap could go. The first year had 14 participants, but since then, the event has spread all across the country, with thousands of attendees taking part. In 2018, enough “trail trash” was collected to fill three 40-foot containers.

The rally’s official website explains that “Gambler 500 started in Oregon 2014 by Tate Morgan and the OG Gamblers, a small group embracing cheap fun in all forms. Now dubbed ‘Gamblertown’ the original event in Oregon is the global meetup for what Gambler has evolved into as a brand encouraging people across the world to go have adventures using Gambler 500 as a call sign. We allow people to use the term ‘Gambler’ as long as it’s free and participants embrace the ideals of stewardship while having cheap fun in the outdoors.”

Unsurprisingly, the Plybertruck has gotten a lot of attention both on the road and on the internet, and now it even has its own Facebook page. The car underwent some upgrades this summer after the last Gambler event, including a new windshield, battery, and exhaust system, and it’ll hopefully be rejoining the fun when the next Gambler 500 happens in Oregon next June.

The Plybertruck certainly isn’t the first participant in the Gambler 500 to turn heads with its unusual looks, and it won’t be the last. Another notable entry this year was the “Double Trouble” Ford Ranger pickup by Gage Van, which is made of one red pickup and one purple, joined together cab-to-cab. In an interview with The Drive, Van explained that the project took just three days to complete. The newer red cab is the front, which powers the Frankentruck with a 4.0-liter V6 engine. It’s often accompanied on the road by an equally wild Chevy Suburban-based boat car.

The post Plybertruck: Low-Budget Cybertruck Spoof Designed for an Off-Road Competition first appeared on Dornob.

Teens and twenty-somethings pick up all kinds of weird tips from TikTok, ranging from the harmless and sweet (like cottagecore style) to downright dangerous (like DIY dental work). During the COVID lockdowns of 2020, Gen Z and millennials turned their attention to honing a host of new skills and hobbies, but the most adorable of them all might just be the tufted rug trend. Social media, home decor, pandemic-induced boredom, and unfettered creativity crashed together to create a perfect storm of homemade rug designs, and many of them are seriously cool.

Nicholas Ferrara of Orlando is one of the TikTok users who first sparked the trend. In early 2020, the 22-year-old happened upon a YouTube tutorial for creating rugs with a tufting gun, a yarn stitching tool that looks sort of like a handheld drill. He ordered one and started experimenting, and before long he was churning out one brilliant creation after another, posting clips of his process to TikTok and Instagram. Suddenly besieged by followers requesting custom rugs, he set up shop under the name RugSoda, selling his designs for up to $250 a pop.

Ferrara’s rugs are definitely unique. Where else are you going to find a “Flat Tom” rug featuring the cat from classic cartoon Tom and Jerry? Other designs include “Squashed Squidward,” inspired by the character from SpongeBob Squarepants, the Grateful Dead dancing bear, Converse sneakers, and Ferrara’s own abstracted designs.

Other users who have skyrocketed to TikTok fame with DIY tufted rugs include Claire Molenda @clairemolenda, Anfernee Abad @pennyiech, and Miffy Hornsby @miffyhornsby. Abad has an endearingly cartoonish style, and Molenda has since expanded her vintage rug-making style to tufted jackets, with some of her videos getting upwards of a million views and her designs often selling out within minutes of posting. And of course, Hornsby’s “F#ck 2020” rug probably did the best job of capturing how we all feel about the year of the global pandemic.

If your style leans more toward midcentury modern than anime, you’ll want to check out Tim Eads @tufttheworld, a designer who founded an online community for tufters and started selling tufting guns and yarn back in 2018. TikTokers eager to participate in the new trend often flock to Eads’ website TuftingGun.com to order supplies, get help, and discuss the craft in greater detail than a social media comments section allows.

Trish Andersen is another artist credited with reigniting interest in the craft of tufting before it was cool. Hailing from Dalton, Georgia, where the tufting gun was invented, Anderson is an alum of the fiber program at the Savannah College of Art and Design. After her first rug went viral on social media, she launched a career making highly sought-after, large-scale painterly pieces. “Me and my fiancé were just fixing up our apartment and I just made that for the hell of it. I don’t even make rugs,” she tells Metropolis. Compared to other forms of fiber arts, “tufting, for me, is much more like painting and drawing. You’re able to jump around the canvas, play with your colors, and move around your piece as a whole rather than line by line.”

Dating back all the way to the ancient Mycenaeans and Egyptians, fluting is a classic design element that adds texture, pattern, and a sense of rhythm to both buildings and furniture. Traditionally associated with Greek columns and the neoclassical revival of the 18th century, fluting is now making another comeback, showing up in virtually every contemporary design style from Scandinavian minimalism to modern farmhouse.

This scalloped or ribbed motif brings visual interest to tables, headboards, lamps, cabinetry, and all kinds of other objects around the home. Today, interior designers are modernizing fluted furniture by focusing on neutral and nature-inspired colors, especially for spring and summer. You’ll most commonly see it incorporated into cast concrete or wood pieces, with the rounded vertical flutes ranging from subtle and narrow to wide and exaggerated.

Looking to incorporate the fluted furniture trend into your decor? Here are five standout pieces available for purchase, plus three bonus DIY projects if you’re feeling handy.

Quinn Lacquer 6-Drawer Dresser by West Elm

Available in white or a more rustic wood look, West Elm’s Quinn Lacquer 6-Drawer Dresser features fluted drawer fronts, metal hardware, and thin metal legs.

Talma Ceramic Toothbrush Holder by Urban Outfitters

Bring fluting into the bathroom with the Talma line of bathroom accessories from Urban Outfitters. Along with a toothbrush holder, you’ll find a matching stash box and soap dish in shades of deep green and cheerful pink.

Fluted Table Lamp in Gilded Iron by William Sonoma

When it comes to lamps, fluting is typically reserved for fabric or glass shades, but it’s nice how this sturdy iron table lamp by Williams Sonoma recalls classical Greek columns with its shape.

Textured Collection Side Table by West Elm

Available in white, terra cotta, pink, or gray, West Elm’s Textured Collection Side Table is handcrafted from earthenware and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. It has a pleasing sculptural quality to it, too, enhanced by its hand-molded shape and subtle glaze.

Linco Console Table by AllModern

Here’s a fun spin on fluted furniture. AllModern’s Linco Console Table is technically caged rather than fluted, but its shape mimics the same look with an airy and open effect. It’s made of black metal and features two shelves beneath a tabletop.

DIY Fluted Dresser by House Beautiful and Minwax

Who doesn’t love a good IKEA hack? This one by House Beautiful and Minwax takes the old reliable Malm dresser and gives it a little something extra with pine molding on the drawer fronts.

After falling in love with a pricey fluted coffee table, blogger Fariha of Pennies for a Fortune decided to recreate it herself with boards and dowels.

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of designing or renovating a kitchen and overlook the details that really matter. Before you spend your hard-earned money on features you’ll regret, consider these six common kitchen design mistakes that could make your kitchen harder to use, clean, and enjoy. After all, if your kitchen’s functionality is impaired, you’ll just end up ordering a lot more take-out – and then what’s the point of putting so much time and effort into it?

Lack of Adequate Storage

Image via Apartment Therapy

Open shelving is all the rage right now, and it’s easy to see why. Upper cabinets can dominate the space, especially if they’re a dark color, while simple shelves contribute to an airier feel. But keep in mind the cardinal rule of well-organized interiors: there should always be a home for everything. Otherwise, you’ll just end up with all those extra dishes, glasses, cooking implements, and baking ingredients cluttering your countertops. If you take away storage on the wall, add it back somewhere else.

Neglecting a Good Workflow

Image via Cooksmarts

Pay attention to how you actually move through your kitchen while using it. Is there a place to set hot things down beside the stove? Is there a clear path from the stove to the sink to the fridge? Can people pass through without bumping into open doors, a too-large island, or other obstacles? It’s harder to engineer a good workflow when your kitchen is small, but there are always workarounds, like slide-out surfaces, pocket doors, and counter-depth appliances.

Choosing Hard-to-Clean Materials

Image via Fantastic Frank

Sure, tile counters can be beautiful. But have you ever had to clean greasy sludge out of grout? The same goes for real wood floors and unfinished wood cabinets, both of which can discolor quickly from oily splashes and spills. Before you choose those porous countertops or stainless appliances that show every single fingerprint, think about how (and how often) you’ll be cleaning their surfaces. You might find that alternative materials suddenly seem more appealing.

Indulging in Too Many Trends

Image via HGTV

Two-toned painted cabinets, mix-and-match hardware, and speckled granite are three trends that were majorly popular just a few years ago, but all of them are now on their way out. Sorry, Joanna Gaines, but shiplap is probably next. When you’re designing your kitchen, avoid including too many things you’d see on a reality TV home makeover show, because there’s good chance they’ll look dated in the very near future. If you love a certain trend too much to pass it up, use it for something that can be switched out easily when you feel like making another change.

Going Hard on Amateur Projects

Image via Lovely Etc

You watched all the YouTube videos. You memorized every second of that TikTok tutorial. Great. You can probably handle a lot of DIY projects and save money in the process. Just make sure you really know what you’re doing, and don’t skip any steps. Proper planning and prep is crucial. For instance, if you’re looking to paint your cabinets, don’t forget to degrease, sand, and prime them first, or they’ll start to bubble and peel in a matter of months.

Overspending on the Wrong Stuff

Image via Viking

It can be tempting to design for other people’s impressions, imagining what they’ll think when they walk in. But your kitchen is for you, and it should match your lifestyle. If you really don’t need a top-of-the-line gas range, those thousands could go toward items that will actually make your life easier, like cabinet shelves that slide out so you don’t have to crawl inside looking for that one muffin tin.

The post Don’t Make These 6 Major Kitchen Design Mistakes first appeared on Dornob.

Have you ever felt more relieved to see the first signs of spring? With our long hard winter of pandemic discontent nearly over, we’re bursting at the seams to get outside and enjoy milder weather. Now is a great time to spruce up your outdoor space for the season to make it feel a little more festive and welcoming as we look ahead to brighter days. These 6 easy DIY decor ideas won’t break the bank, and you don’t have to be a carpenter or master crafter to create them.

Buckets of Annuals

Image via Organized Clutter

First and foremost, spring means flowers. The best and simplest spring decor for your porch is just some affordable annuals tucked into your favorite pots or some galvanized buckets, which add a touch of rustic charm. You can find galvanized buckets and basins at your local hardware store, but check vintage markets, thrift stores, and flea markets, too. Some nice choices for annuals include phlox, sweet alyssum, coleus, polka dot plant, red nemesia, and edible nasturtiums.

Colorful Thrift Store Chairs

Speaking of thrift stores, make sure you browse their chair selections when you’re there. Whether you find a matching set or an eclectic mix, you can simply spray paint them all the same color (or a palette of spring shades) to bring them together. This is a fun way to add an accent hue to your decor scheme.

Early Bloom Wreaths

Image via Annabelle Eve Designs on Etsy

Prune a few branches of your early blooming forsythia, cherry tree, or whatever else looks pretty in your yard and shape them into a wreath with some floral wire for a quick and easy update to your front door. If you’re feeling less than crafty, you can always just buy one, too. Etsy seller Annabelle Eve Designs creates these lovely seasonal wreaths with silk flowers, burlap, and a moss-covered monogram, and you can use it year after year.

Mini Solar Barrel Fountain

Creating a DIY solar fountain is easier than it sounds, and it brings so much to outdoor spaces of all sizes: sparkly reflections, the sound of flowing water, and curious creatures seeking a drink or a bath. All you need is a floating solar fountain, which you can find on Amazon for under $12, and a watertight container like a galvanized bucket, an old wine barrel, or a planter pot without a drain hole.

Switch out the throw pillows on your outdoor furniture with something sweet for spring. Alternately, stores like Crate and Barrel, Anthropologie, and West Elm, where we found this pretty “embellished blooms” throw, are good places to look.

Dried floral bouquets are a leading decor trend in 2021, and you never have to worry about them wilting. It used to be that you had to hunt down the best elements to create one in the wild, in your yard, or in flower markets, but now you can find gorgeous preserved blooms and greenery on the internet and in local shops. Crate and Barrel has a particularly great selection, including these pink paper palms, which make for the perfect dramatic backdrop to pair with lush shades of green.

The post 6 DIY Spring Porch Decor Ideas for Any Budget first appeared on Dornob.
