The CP collection comes packaged as a groovy laser-cut set to be assembled at home. Giving new and cutting edge meaning to ‘flat pack’, you can go all ‘zen’ and build the dream lamp.

Great gifts for DIY enthusiasts, lovers of model airplanes and design-led cheats – “I made that!” If you get it wrong, hopefully you can dust it off and start all over again. All the electrics are taken care of – you just worry about the fiddly bits. Though what’s to worry about? It’s easy, and it looks hard. Now you can show off about it.

The CP standard lamp takes to the floor. Elegant and striking, its splayed stance is almost anthropomorphic as open and friendly, it stands to attention like an enthusiastic dog. Oh and never forget – you made that!

“The laser cut lamp series are all DIY-packages. In other words, they come in a kit to be assembled by you. The ‘ribs’ of the lamps are cut out of MDF by our very own laser cutter, which gives the sides a black color that matches with the cord and fitting.”

“The lamps are produced in a social work facility. The lamps come in four different sizes and styles. But they all have some classical as well as modern elements in them. We are really happy with the balance in pricing and quality for this series. Real Dutch Design that is affordable for everybody. That’s how we like it.”

His goal? To design and build decent and affordable housing for low-income families in Hale County, Alabama, 30-percent of whom lived in poverty.
“Architecture won’t begin to alleviate all social woes,” (but) “it is a necessary step in the willingness to seek solutions to poverty in its own context,” said Mockbee.
The idea was to provide an affordable alternative to trailer homes, the only viable route to home ownership for many residents in the area. (Though trailers depreciate in value over time and deteriorate fairly quickly, typically they do not require a high level of conventional credit funding.)

“The Rural Studio was created by Samuel Mockbee and longtime friend D.K. Ruth in 1993 to simultaneously demystify modern architecture and expose architecture students to extreme poverty in their own backyard. Both Mockbee and Ruth have passed away, but their legacy lives on in the thriving Rural Studio community,” according to Mockbee website.
After Mockbee died in 2001, Andrew Freear succeeded him as director and the program continues to give architecture students a hands-on educational experience while assisting an underserved population in West Alabama’s Black Belt region. Initially known for its ethos of recycling, reusing and remaking, it has widened its scope in the 21st century, focusing on community-oriented work.

Rural Studio’s 2005 project ‘The 20k Home,’ was to be carried out by international post-graduates with a background in architecture or design, with the stated aim of bringing in the costs of each home to the householder at $20,000— this was deemed to be the amount that a recipient of social security payments could afford to pay in monthly mortgage installments.
“Rural Studio launched its affordable-housing program in 2005, where we have been experimenting and prototyping a new locally-built rural home, known as ‘the 20K Home.’ We were eager to make our work more relevant to the needs of west Alabama, the Southeast, and possibly the entire country. We looked at the omnipresent American trailer park, where homes, counterintuitively, depreciate each year they are occupied. We wanted to create a beautiful, small, and efficient home that would appreciate in value while accommodating residents who are unable to qualify for credit.”

The aim of the 20K House was to produce a model home that could be replicated on a large scale, with local construction workers employed in the build, designed by students, and when possible, using reclaimed materials. About 50 to 60-percent of the cost was to be used on materials and the houses were to be 550 sq ft—a fair size for such a low cost. As housing appreciates in value and building and material costs increase, the dream of a 20k home has been tempered over the years.
“It costs the same amount to underwrite a $150,000 as a $20,000, so there’s always pressures to raise the cost of the house, whether it’s from the bank lending the money, whether it’s from the builder looking to make a profit, whether it’s from the real estate agent,” said Andrew Freear, Rural Studio Director.
Nevertheless, Freear says that he sees the 20K house as a moral obligation. Rural Studio seeks to partner with non-profit organizations, so their model of a student built, cheap and custom-tailored design continues to be rolled out to those who need them.

In 2016, the Rural Studio project is still going strong. Multi-year, multi-phase efforts travel across three counties. Students work within the community to raise funds, design projects and build them. With more than 700 projects, Rural Studio has educated more than 800 ‘Citizen Architects.’ Their structures combine “sound construction, utilitarian functionality and aesthetic harmony to give their inhabitants the dignity and comfort they deserve.”

So, what is a 20K home? “A beautiful, affordable, durable, efficient and well-built home,” according to the Rural Studios website.

The post Rural Studio and the Dream of a 20K Home first appeared on Dornob.

If you want to linger outside, sharing food with friends and family, a garden fireplace and grill means you don’t have to go in as soon as you get cold or hungry. In the modern holy grail of home design, strategic placement of floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors have been bringing the outside inside. Conversely, garden-based fireplaces and barbecues are now taking the inside outside.

Sebios is a Dutch company creating contemporary outdoor fireplaces designed, assembled and manufactured in-house. Their website strapline is ‘elegance, luxury and joy compressed in design.’ The stated aim of Dutch designer Oscar van Buijtene is to spread his personal motto – “live with passion” – through his designer fire collection.

“The enjoyment of a fine meal with good wine in the company of friends and the joy and warmth of family… that is the experience I want to convey to others.” — Oscar van Buijtene

The Sebios fireplace collection is constructed from Corten steel, which weathers to a reddish-brown rust patina – the oxidation layer thus created prevents any further rusting.

It also comes in black.
Discreet and portable, it stores over your spare tire! The three steel legs latch onto the tire, and it looks pretty sharp. For around $100, it can also double up as an outdoor table.

OK so you’ve finished with your barbie – now you just need to tackle the messy grill. Either roll up your sleeves and get out the elbow grease (though isn’t it greasy enough already?) or just invest in one of these. Billed as “the world’s first automatic grill cleaning robot,” the Grillbot will do just that at the push of a button. I suppose you need to decide – what’s easier to clean? The grill or the grillbot? Well, it has removable brushes that can be cleaned in a dishwasher. So, if you like kitchen (and garden) labor-saving gadgets, you may just love it.

At this year’s convention, the company announced that the area would be called “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge” and that anyone visiting the Orlando location would get the chance to experience a “100 percent immersive,” two-day narrative adventure by staying in a special Star Wars-themed hotel!

Set for completion in the next few years, the “Star Wars Hotel” is being designed to look and feel like one of the series’ iconic starships, complete with views of “intergalactic space” from each window. Guests will even get to “fly” a life-size replica of the Millennium Falcon through the heart of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance.

The two-day adventure is expected to cost anywhere from $900 to $1000, with rooms accommodating up to four people each. During the day, guests can explore the park and sample Star Wars-inspired treats like “blue milk” from a variety of themed restaurants. Disney even plans to replicate the famous “Mos Eisley Cantina” from the original films and bring it to life in Galaxy’s Edge!

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek had this to say on the project: “To say we are excited for the Star Wars-themed lands to open in 2019 is an understatement. All along, we have said this will be game-changing, and through the model we can begin to see how truly epic these immersive new worlds will be.”
Galaxy’s Edge is Disney’s largest ever single-themed expansion, and the company clearly couldn’t be more thrilled about it. Chris Beatty, the project’s Executive Director, even told ABC News: “It’s got to be big. Go big or go home with Star Wars.” Bearing in mind that Disney owns the rights to Star Wars and that series creator George Lucas is fully on-board with the expansion, it seems like the only thing that could hold the company back is the limits of its imagination.

“Cast members,” or theme park staff, will be dressed up as well-known Star Wars characters like Chewbacca, BB-8, and Kylo Ren. The Disney Parks blog explains that Galaxy’s Edge “will allow guests to visit a remote trading port on the edge of wild space, where Star Wars characters and their stories come to life — and where guests will find themselves in the middle of the action.”

If watching the film series has whetted your appetite for a more immersive Star Wars experience, you’re in luck: you only need to wait until 2019 before you can dust off your lightsaber and head over to Galaxy’s Edge. And metal sculptor Stephen Myburgh is no stranger to promoting himself on TV either; in August 2011, he appeared on “Dragon’s Den,” a TV show on BBC,to present his majestic Mood Swing copper swing seats for possible investment.
“Give me a chance I’ll make magic products that the world will buy, I promise you,” said South African-born Myburgh on the show, but unfortunately, the “dragons” just weren’t convinced.
For them, it was all about the bottom line, and retailing at around £5K ($7.5K at that time), they believed the swings were luxury items not worth their personal time and investment. The fact that the princess of Liechtenstein was a customer cut no ice—presumably this proved to them it was a niche item.

Lucky for us, Myburgh was happy to disagree. His artistry and expertise is irrepressible, and the Mood Swing’s days on UK telly were not over. ITV’s “Love Your Garden,” shown in June 2015 featured the swings, both inside and outside, as part of an inspirational garden furniture feature. Other pieces of copper furniture have gone on to internet fame.

And if it’s inspiration you’re after, British inspirational retail expert and TV shopping guru Mary Portas was seen swinging on Ostara in her Channel 4 “Mary Portas: Personal Shopper” series. Given that Portas is considered to be an influential guide to what to buy, (she also heads up Channel 4’s TV series “What Britain Buys”) this was some coup for Myburgh and his swings.

“Nature and its subtleties have always been my design program. But opulence and luxury offer the theater that I love to live with. Copper is a wonderful medium to merge these two desires,” said Myburgh.
Born in Durban, South Africa, Myburgh completed his national service then left on his voyage of discovery:
“My travels have taken me all over the world. From the jungles of Guatemala to the deserts of Egypt,” he said. “It is these places and these experiences that help me see the world as I see it now.”

In 1997 he arrived in London. Drawn to working with copper, which he believes like him, is very adaptable, he began to explore large scale metal work. A year later, in partnership with Caroline Fletcher (his future wife), Myburgh Designs launched the Mood Swing collection.
“Each Myburgh design blends high-end sculptural originality with lasting functionality, inviting you to create and enjoy your own personal paradise. Imaginatively designed garden swing seats are crafted using luxurious organic materials that mellow beautifully with age,” according to the Myburgh Design brochure.

Myburgh was warned on Dragon’s Den that “artistic talent should stay with you—for all your talents you’ll drive people mad who go into business with you.”
Well, happily it doesn’t seem to have put him off and his Mood Swing collection is still going strong and rocking the world.

The post Sculptural Organic Copper Swings first appeared on Dornob.

The ceremonies have always striven toward six fundamental goals: to identify and promote good design, to raise public awareness of contemporary design, to help companies integrate design into their long-term strategies, to support talented youth and create a public platform for aspiring designers, to safeguard the roles of working professionals, and to effect social change through the art of design.
On March 10th, a panel of 58 experts from 19 countries welcomed 2,000 people to the 2017 awards ceremony at the BMW Welt in Munich, Germany. 75 designers took home gold awards for their outstanding work in the fields of product design, communication design, packaging design, service design, interior architecture, and professional concept.

The winning projects range from the ultra lightweight, carbon-fiber “LessThanFive” chair to the life-changing “Assistant Glasses Set”—which uses hearing aids to help the deaf visually interpret sounds—to an app that helps you find your way around London’s Tate Britain and Tate Modern galleries. All 75 award recipients will have their projects added to the online World Design Guide, which features every one of the almost 40,000 winning designs from the last 64 years. Winning entries will also go on to join their predecessors as parts of a year-long exhibition in Hamburg’s HafenCity, on display from March 11th, 2017 to February 18th, 2018.

iF’s HafenCity exhibit will also showcase the winners of their Design Talent Awards, which, according to the company, aim “to put good designs by young people in the spotlight and connect future designers with business owners, established designers, and each other.”

iF has come a long way since its inception in 1953. Founded in a post-war Berlin at a time when Germany was trying to re-establish itself as one of the world’s industrial powerhouses, it was an organization committed first and foremost to “Die Gute Industrieform,” or good industrial form. Inspired by the Bauhaus movement and its insistence on “good form,” the company eventually shortened their name to “industrial form” (hence iF) and began their efforts to show the public the extent to which design could improve daily life. iF provided a positive way for Germany to reconnect with the rest of the world: by stressing the importance and efficiency of German art and innovation. Today, their website reads, ”The iF Design Award has long become a symbol for excellent form, for aesthetic quality, and for user-focused, ergonomic and efficient design in all disciplines, by companies around the world.”
Any companies, design studios, organizations, NGOs, groups, or individuals interested in changing society through good design can now enter the contest to win iF’s Social Impact Prize 2017. Each contestant has a chance of winning 50,000 euros and of having their project immortalized in the company’s prestigious World Design Guide. The contest doesn’t require any kind of entry fee and is open to all except students.

The post iF Design Awards 2017 first appeared on Dornob.

When Vestegnens Kulturuge tasked Danish artist Thomas Dambo with creating artworks in six of Copenhagen’s western suburbs, he chose to hide them away in forests, beside lakes and swamps, and on the tops of mountains. He describes theses spots as ”some of [his] favorite places around the city.” Collectively, the artist’s ”Six Forgotten Giants,” all of which have been made entirely from scrap material, form an “open air sculpture treasure hunt,” which Dambo hopes people will partake in. If they do, they’ll stumble upon some largely unused areas of natural beauty and fulfill the project’s goal of “taking art out of the museum.”

Dambo explains, “As humans we often have a way of choosing the beaten path and the main roads. So when the municipalities of west Copenhagan contacted me about a project it seemed natural to make something which could get people out and explore the beautiful nature in hidden outskirts which you wouldn’t usually see.”

Whether he’s designing furniture, interior spaces, or huge art installations, Dambo likes to integrate the people and places around him into all of his work. Since 2013, he’s made 25 recycled sculptures that have been placed around the world. His ”Six Forgotten Giants” were completed last year, and they have since been positioned next to boulders with poetry inscribed on them. By using these snippets (and a map) as clues, travelers can successfully make their way from one “forgotten” giant to the next. With the help of local volunteers, Dambo made these sculptures out of old floorboards, over 600 wooden pallets, a fence, a watermill, and “whatever else [they were] able to scavenge.” As a token of gratitude to his helpers, Dambo has named each giant after a different volunteer.

In Hakkemosen, on the shore of a picturesque lake in Høje Taastrup, ”Teddy Friendly” forms a small bridge with his outstretched arm while sitting on the opposite side of a narrow stream. Four unemployed people, and a teacher from a local activation center named Teddy, volunteered to help build this giant, whose fur was made from the cutoffs of locally felled trees.

”Sleeping Louis” was put in a part of Rødovre that had previously attracted a lot of homeless people — food waste, pieces of trash, and old sleeping bags were found scattered across the site. In an effort to alleviate this problem, Dambo hollowed this giant out to allow people to sleep inside of him. The real-life Louis is none other than the artist’s personal assistant, who hails from Bristol.

”Little Tilde” peeks out from behind a tree in Vallensbaek Mose, an area prone to extremely cold weather. Inside Tilde are 28 birdhouses, which were inserted into the giant for birds and squirrels to take shelter in during the winter. Even an 86-year-old craftsman offered to lend a hand in Tilde’s construction!

In Ishøj, you’ll find ”Oscar Under The Bridge,” a giant whose fingers clutch the bridge running over his hideout. He’s made from the scraps of an old watermill and takes his name from the Chilean artist who helped build him.

Elsewhere, two other sculptures provide the perfect vantage points for viewing their surrounding nature. ”Thomas On The Mountain” reclines on a small hillside to look out over Albertslund. While you might think this piece is referencing Dambo himself, it was actually named after an intern who worked on all six Forgotten Giants. In Hvidovre, ”Hill Top Trine” reclines as she overlooks the grazing sheep and picturesque meadows of Avedøresletten.

Ultimately, Dambo ”[hopes his] art will inspire people to see the big potential in recycling and taking better care of our planet.”

The post Artist Hides Giant Sculptures in Copenhagen Forest first appeared on Dornob.

Undertaken in 2012 and finished in December 2015, the “Oriental Lion” (as it’s popularly known) was transported over 3,000 miles from a workshop in Myanmar to its final destination in the Fortune Plaza Times Square in Wuhan, the capital of China’s Hubei Province.

Measuring 47-and-a-half feet long, 16-and-a-half feet high, and 13 feet wide, this king of the concrete jungle has gone on to be included in the Guinness Book of World Records, officially making it the world’s largest redwood sculpture.

Conceived of by Chinese architect Dengding Rui Yao, Oriental Lion honors the imperial Chinese tradition of depicting guardian lions, or “shi,” in sculpture. The concept of guardian lions, also known as “Imperial Guardian Lions,” stems from Chinese Buddhism. During China’s dynastic period, shi traditionally stood in front of palaces, tombs, and the homes of wealthy government officials. Today, some fine examples can still be seen protecting the entrance to Beijing’s Forbidden City. Guardian lions date back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD) and are still used as powerful symbolic and decorative elements.

Nowadays, stylized guardian lions can be found outside restaurants, supermarkets, and hotels — in China and also in Chinatowns around the world. While these protectors are usually depicted in pairs to represent the “yin (female) and yang (male)” duality of life, it seems unlikely that the Oriental Lion will be receiving a companion sculpture any time soon. Its sheer size would surely be too daunting to recreate. The lion’s sides are rough-hewn like the bark from which it was made, while its back and roaring head have been smoothed out to create a sleekness of form.

Though Oriental Lion is the largest-ever sculpture created from a redwood tree, the longest continuous wooden sculpture was completed a couple of years earlier. Interestingly enough, it was also carved in China. Created over a period of four years by Chinese artist and renowned woodcarver Zheng Chunhui, it was unveiled in Fujian in November 2013. Measuring just over 40 feet long, the sculpture recreates “Along The River During the Qingming Festival,” a famous painting by the Song Dynasty artist Zhang Zeduan.

Depicting the everyday lives of Chinese people from 900 years ago, the original artwork was painted on a scroll that was designed to be opened up by hand and looked at by unrolling it from right to left. Over the years, “Along the River” has been reproduced many times. In keeping with the style of the original work, most of these replicas were painted on parchment or paper. The painting is so famous in China that it is referred to as the country’s “Mona Lisa.” Chunhui’s massive wooden take on it features 550 people herding animals, carrying cargo, and shopping at street markets.

It exceeds the Oriental Lion in length, but because it is made up of several tiny scenes, Chunhui’s recreation of “Along the River” is arguably the less impressive piece in terms of size. After all, nothing beats the sheer breathtaking nature of the lion’s scale and physical presence.

The post World’s Largest Redwood Sculpture Carved From Tree Trunk in China first appeared on Dornob.

For decades, Scandinavia has been known for its stylish interior designs and household products. Magisso, a Finnish company and award-winning lifestyle brand that was established in 2008, is part of the reason why the area has garnered that reputation. It makes functional and user-friendly kitchenware that unsurprisingly looks great, too. At this year’s Dwell on Design convention in downtown Los Angeles, Dornob decided to check out the company’s newest collection.

Magisso’s new “White Line” cooling ceramics, which were designed by Simon Stephens, marry forward-thinking functionality with a pared-down aesthetic. Unless you have a constant supply of ice cubes on hand or access to a fridge or freezer, refrigeration can be a tricky business. When the weather is hot, food and drink that’s left in standard crockery will usually turn warm. Luckily, Magisso’s cooling ceramics are not standard crockery.

Simply soak your Magisso bowl, wine cooler, plate, or carafe in water for a minute or two and watch as the droplets start to disappear. Afterward, anything you put in the ceramics should stay cool for hours! You’ll finally be able to enjoy your grapes, strawberries, watermelon, and salads outdoors without having to worry about them wilting in the heat. Plus, all the pieces in the “White Line” range feature a matte black exterior that allows for a bit of fun and personalization. Take a piece of chalk and inscribe a heart, the name of a diner, or a friendly message on them.

Of course, it wasn’t enough for Magisso to ensure a cooler dining experience for all people, so it went the extra mile and created the perfect petware for dogs and cats! A bone-shaped insertion in the well of the bowl forces pets to eat their food differently than they normally would, slowing down the process and preventing overeating and indigestion issues. Since it prolongs your pet’s chewing time, the bowl can also be said to increase saliva production and promote good dental hygiene.

UCLA collaborated with Tekes’ Global Access Program, or GAP, to help Magisso establish itself in the US. Tekes provides funding for companies, research organizations, and public sector service providers in Finland. Magisso currently has offices in Helsinki and North Carolina, though the company hopes that its innovative, functional designs will gain it global recognition soon enough.
According to Magisso’s CEO Juhani Sirén, the company usually comes up with an idea in one of two ways: either in-house or from outside sources. “It can come from a designer or a housewife, or whoever is facing a problem at their home.” He goes on to say, “Consumers are more and more demanding, they want something more than just the design, the good looks. They want to have that functionality around the product and I think that’s something Magisso is all about.”

The post Magisso: Cooling Ceramics for All first appeared on Dornob.

London-based artist Stephen Wright is a man with a vision: to incorporate found objects that would otherwise be thrown away into the fabric of his home and create a unique, visual diary of his life. The ”House Of Dreams Museum” in East Dulwich is not just the place where he lives — it’s also one of his most ambitious works to date.

Wright explains the idea behind this concept online, stating: “In 1999 I began work on a life project THE HOUSE OF DREAMS MUSEUM in my home in East Dulwich, south London. With the help of collaborator Donald Jones, I wanted to transform my house and garden into a shrine to my own obsessions. I am fascinated with over-embellishment and intend to completely adorn and smother every available surface inside and outside the house.”

Sadly, Jones passed away just two years into the project, shortly followed by Stephen’s parents. For the greater part of the last two decades, Wright has continued to expand his House of Dreams, driven by the desire to leave a lasting work behind. In a way, Wright can be said to have created a new “family” in the house, the members of which are his own art pieces.

Much of Stephen’s artistic and spiritual inspiration comes from Haitian voodoo dolls. In fact, dolls of many kinds can be found throughout his house, some of them even hanging upside down from the ceiling. He finds beauty in things that have outlived their use, and, like a human magpie, he collects bright, shiny, and sometimes dirty items that he feels will add to his home. With so much stuff around, people are bound to consider at least a couple of Wright’s findings macabre. It’s easy to see how someone would think that about the “Dented Faced Doll,” for example, which was bought in a Deptford market and run over by a car. Nonetheless, it’s one of Wright’s favorite pieces in the entire house!

The artist claims to have never felt at home in the bustling city of London. He was born on a farm in the suburbs, and when he moved to England’s capital city for work he wanted to create a living, breathing artwork to serve as his comfort zone. He likens the creation of each piece, which makes up a part of his larger life “diary,” to giving birth. Wright has also incorporated some organic objects that were donated by visitors into the house, including ashes, hair, and teeth! To make things even quirkier, Wright has said that he doesn’t clean or throw away a single object upon receiving it: all items are worked into the House of Dreams “as is.”

Wright adds, “The museum is a journey of self-exploration, incorporating my passions, which include popular religious art from Mexico, South America, India, and Haiti. I am adorning my environment to create a shrine to my life using found and bought junk, toys, glitter, bottle tops, old pottery, and kitsch souvenir objects.”

On certain days, members of the public are allowed entrance into the House of Dreams. Currently, an “open day” ticket costs anywhere from five to ten British pounds. Alternatively, you can try scheduling an appointment to see the house with the artist himself. The House Of Dreams has already been bequeathed to the UK’s National Trust, so it will be looked after long after Wright dies.

“I sometimes don’t have a clue what I am doing and why,” Wright says. “I only know it’s the right thing for me to do.”

The post Stephen Wright’s House of Dreams first appeared on Dornob.

In celebration of their 2017 theme “The Nation We Build Together,” the National Museum of American History in Washington DC has unveiled a replica of the Statue of Liberty made entirely from “Lego” bricks. Located in the building’s first-floor lobby and standing at over nine feet tall, the statue played a major role in the Smithsonian’s 4th of July festivities and now serves as an impressive, fun doorman that visitors can snap a quick picture with.

The model was designed and assembled by 49-year-old Erik Varszegi, one of four “master” Lego builders in the United States. It took the specialist 70 hours just to plan out the 125-pound (without its internal steel frame) statue’s construction — the actual building process required two extra sets of hands and a whopping 292 hours of labor! In total, 25,375 bricks in five different colors were used to complete the project. While most of Lady Liberty’s body is sand green, her base is sand yellow, and the flame on her torch boasts a warm golden hue. Plus, a few reddish and brown blocks were used to make up the observation windows on her crown.

According to Varszegi, who has spent the last 22 years building Lego models, the biggest challenge he faced during this project was faithfully recreating the back of the statue. He explains, “If I had to pick a most difficult part of the model, I’d have to say the whole backside of her. Very little in the way of photographs exist online of Lady Liberty. Seems like people only like shooting her from the front.”

On the replica, Museum Director John Gray had this to say: “The image of the Statue of Liberty is inspiring to so many of us. She embodies all of the complicated ideas that form our American history and drive our nation’s future. We try to always have a major object in the museum’s Constitution Ave. lobby to send a message about what is happening in the rest of the building and that’s what the Statue of Liberty does for us. For many visitors, she’s a great photo opportunity and we’ve seen lots of selfies snapped there.”

The original Statue of Liberty was designed by French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi and built by Gustave Eiffel (the same man who created the iconic tower in Paris). Though it was fashioned from copper, Bartholdi’s original intention was to have her made from gold. In fact, he also planned for her to be used as a lighthouse.

Since its completion in 1886, the iconic sculpture has gone on to inspire many artworks and artifacts. A handful of these items can be found in the Museum of American History alongside Varszegi’s Lego model. Miniatures, rugs, and even menorahs pay tribute to Lady Liberty and reflect our 100-plus year fascination with her.

“The Statue of Liberty remains an enduring symbol of America, and this model invites our visitors to think about what it means to be American and invites them to engage in the stories of the country,” explains John Gray.

The post LEGO Statue of Liberty Built for National Museum of American History first appeared on Dornob.

The experts over at Method Homes exhibited “Annata,” their newest deluxe custom-made house, at this year’s Dwell on Design conference in downtown Los Angeles. The company specializes in creating high-end prefab homes that prioritize sustainability and good design. To maximize efficiency and minimize hassle, Method Homes builds all of their houses and commercial structures in-house before shipping them out and erecting them onsite. The Annata model was conceived of by Chris Pardo Design: Elemental Architecture. To accommodate those with an interest in both in and outdoor living, Method Homes has created two different versions of the Annata: one that consists of two modules and one that consists of three. The home’s optional third module adds a second bedroom, spacious garage, and small outdoor terrace to the design, increasing its total footprint from 1,260 to 1,830 square feet. Annata’s incorporation of outdoor space makes it ideal for California’s wine country and coastal areas. The two-module version of this prefab was on display at this year’s Dwell on Design conference and took just one day to erect — and that includes the time it took to install all its fixtures and fittings!

At the event, a Method Homes spokesman told Dornob: ”Everything is complete when shipped. Our core mission is sustainability and energy efficiency.”

The final price of a Method Home can range anywhere from $180 to $300 a square foot, depending on the buyer’s choice of materials and intended construction site. For instance, the model featured in the company’s Dwell display was designed for a customer who wanted a holiday home in Santa Rosa. To make the house more suitable for that function and location, it was equipped with high-end materials and custom-built fittings.

No matter what kind of house you’re looking for, you can rest assured that Method Homes will build it with the environment in mind. The company explains: “Method works with design partners who share our values, which means designing and constructing homes and commercial structures that are using innovative and responsible practices. We achieve our goals through focusing on a tight building envelope, integrating energy-efficient systems and products whenever possible, and reducing waste through building in a centralized factory location where materials can be reused and recycled.”

Each Method home boasts the following sustainable features:

• Minimal or no VOC paints and adhesives, which means less chemical off-gassing
• Above-code insulation
• No UA formaldehyde
• Quiet and efficient ENERGY STAR-certified ventilation fans
• FSC-certified hardwood floors
• Locally harvested lumber
• Dual-flush toilets
• Low-flow water fixtures
• Pre-wiring for solar panels

The Method Homes model of innovation begins with the process of getting to know the client. During an in-person or over-the-phone meeting with the design team, you’ll be asked a series of questions about the site you have in mind, the things you’re looking for in a home, and your budget. The company will then draw up some rough cost estimates and financing options for you to consider. If you like, you can even hire an external architect to design the house for you! Method Homes will provide them with a set of guidelines on how to construct it using a modular approach.

The company aims to complete every project it takes on in less than four months, which is about 60 percent faster than the average time it takes to complete a traditional site-built house. What could be better than having a high-end, sustainable, and stylish home delivered straight to your door in a matter of months?

The post Method Homes: Sustainable Living in a Matter of Months first appeared on Dornob.

In 2016, the Estonian design company Kodasema unveiled KODA: an innovative, compact prefabricated house. A lot like the architectural equivalent of ready-to-assemble furniture, this freestanding self-build home can be erected and disassembled repeatedly at its owner’s convenience. This June, it was announced that a KODA would be placed in the BRE Innovation Park in Watford, England as part of a collaboration between BRE and the Estonian embassy. The park is known for housing prototypes and demonstration buildings that display innovation in the fields of material engineering, design, and technology and address the developmental challenges faced by cities around the globe.

KODA is a 25-square meter block that boasts an open-plan living area and a mezzanine bedroom. The home’s facade has been glazed to allow plenty of natural light in and to provide its residents with an uninterrupted view of the world outside. The KODA has also been built with sustainability in mind, featuring a set of rooftop-mounted solar panels that generate even more energy than the prefab requires. Inside, the home has been equipped with smart LED lighting, alarms, and climate control. Vacuum-insulated concrete walls help retain heat in the winter, cool things down in the summer, and keep out noise all year long. For around £150,000, or $195,000, you can have a KODA of your own delivered to you. By 2018, the company hopes to release a stackable version of the prefab, meaning we might start seeing some modular villages pop up in the next few years!

KODA recently won the WAN Urban Challenge 2017, a competition that asked entrants from 18 countries to address London’s deepening housing crisis in an original, innovative, and sustainable way. In 2015, Lord Kerslake, the chair of the London Housing Commission, said: “our inability to build enough homes to meet the country’s needs is one of the biggest public policy failures over 50 years.” The commission was established to come up with “radical” new construction solutions and help the mayor boost housing supply and tackle affordability issues.

After World War II, a lot of the British villages that had been devastated by bombings were temporarily rebuilt using prefabricated homes. Though they were only expected to last for about 10 years, a lot of these dwellings have stood the test of time. KODA follows in the footsteps of these earlier attempts to address the UK’s chronic housing shortage, but its portability makes it easier to set up and reposition in temporary settings.

KODA is delivered to the site of the owner’s choice via truck and assembled from a set of factory-made parts in less than seven hours. This small and stylish home can be re-sited and resold whenever it has to be, and it’s ideal for use on land with a temporary occupancy permit. Plus, the KODA is extremely versatile. Use it as an office, vacation home, classroom, studio, or workshop! With any luck, this little unit will also bring attention to the need for housing reform in places like the UK capital and eventually improve the lives of displaced people everywhere.

The post Design Collective Launches Line of Tiny Prefab Homes in UK first appeared on Dornob.

Shortly after he decided to tell the story of the refugees fleeing Syria by creating sculptures out of pebbles from his local beach, Nizar Ali Badr started sharing photos of his art online. His posts attracted the attention of Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer, who in turn reached out to Georgian animator Sandro Kancheli to turn these stills into moving pictures. Kremer would go on to compose the original score for “Pictures of the East,” a short film that brings Badr’s pebble people to life.

Badr’s sculptures are so poignant that they strike compassion into almost everyone who beholds them. After all, what could be more reminiscent of innocence and childhood than the pebbles on a beach? When they’re used to depict Syrian refugees leaving their homes and struggling to survive in foreign countries, the stones take on a tone of simultaneous hope and despair.

Many migrants lose their lives at sea. In a way, the seashore itself provides the perfect metaphor for life’s temporary nature: the tides ebb and flow, bringing water onto the shore for an instant only to take it away again. In recent years, images of refugees drifting in the middle of the ocean or enduring some other unimaginable hardship have become all too familiar. A woman cradling her child — dead, or still breathing? Families carrying the few belongings they have left in bundles on their backs. A man that’s been hanged. All of these events are really happening, but when we see them on the news every day, we become desensitized to these people’s pain and suffering.

The 52-year-old’s sculptures are simple enough for anyone to understand and remind us that these refugees are more than just clips and sound bytes. They’re human beings with their own sets of hopes, dreams, and fears. When combined with Kremer’s music and Kancheli’s animation, Badr’s art becomes a poetic tribute to the desperation and heroism shown by ordinary people in the face of a dangerous and extraordinary situation.

For the last 35 years, Badr has gone to the beach in his hometown of Latakia to collect pebbles of different shapes, colors, and sizes. Initially, it seems like he was the only person who even knew about his art! He told the BBC: “I didn’t have a camera to record any of my work. As soon as I finished, I looked at it for some time and then destroyed it to make a new one.”

Eventually, Nizar started gluing his tableaux onto cards. When glue became too expensive, he finally got his hands on a camera. He explains: “I take photos of the artwork. This is the only way to preserve them and make sure people will see them. My only consolation is the work I do and therefore I don’t see it as a source of revenue. It is pure passion for stone art. I want to communicate human emotions that people everywhere in the world share, such as love, hope, and sadness.”

Clearly, this visionary artist and sculptor has already inspired several others to help him tell the displaced Syrian people’s story. It looks like the French philosopher Blaise Pascal was right when he said “The entire ocean is affected by a pebble.”

The post Beach Pebble Sculptures Tell Refugee Stories first appeared on Dornob.

In June 2017, the winners of the first-ever Hong Kong Pixel Homes Competition were revealed. When the contest was first announced back in February, its entrants were asked to address the need for a more efficient form of multifamily housing in densely-populated cities. In the end, the $3000 first prize went to ”Towers Within A Tower,” an innovative architectural concept by the Chicago-based Kwong Von Glinow Design Office.

The competition was organized by Bee Breeders in an effort to solve the “perennial typological challenge of multi-unit housing.” Overcrowding is a real problem in a lot of major cities and directly contributes to housing shortages, inflationary markets, and increased economic disparity. To tackle this problem, contestants had to come up with a way to comfortably fit more people into a limited 100-square-meter space.

Winners Lap Chi Kwong, Alison Von Glinow, and Kevin Lamyuktseung approached the issue by designing a modular housing system in which each unit’s rooms would be placed on top of, rather than next to, each other. The resulting apartments resemble mini-towers and come together to form a single tower block. In a recent interview with CNN, Kwong explained: “In Hong Kong, everyone’s apartment is horizontal — you don’t really experience a vertical spatial quality within (people’s) houses. So we thought about making a tower out of each apartment unit, and then stacking them.”

To accommodate a variety of housing needs, the architects included plans for studio, one-bedroom, and family units in their final design. With a base of just 42 square meters, even the largest of these apartments might seem too small to lead a comfortable life in. However, it’s important to remember that they’ve been vertically arranged and span a whopping four stories each. Plus, they’ve all been clad in pastel pink and orange tiles for a bright and airy look.

Upon announcing “Towers Within a Tower” as the winning project, the competition’s panel of jurors had this to say: “As the unit progresses upward from floor to floor, the building envelope steps to maximize exterior exposure and increase availability of natural light. Organized in a nine square grid, the project takes full advantage of the perimeter, locating the public circulation at the core.”

To eliminate the isolated feel of standard apartment buildings, the designers also thought to work some outdoor common areas into their tower block. Lap Chi Kwong notes, “I lived in Hong Kong for 15 years — you take the elevator, go up, walk through the corridor and go into your apartment. The interaction with neighbors is very limited. (Apartment blocks) aren’t places that you can hang out in. So we wanted to provide public space that people can enjoy — where they can communicate and play around each other.”

Kwong Von Glinow Design Office is no stranger to winning contests. Last year, they won both the New York Affordable Housing Challenge and the 2016 Chicago Prize: On The Edge. For the New York competition, the team designed a series of ”Table Top” apartments (pictured above), which similarly employ a vertical layout to fit more housing into a dense urban area.

The post Towers Within a Tower: The Ultimate Form of Vertical Housing first appeared on Dornob.

When the architects over at Perkins + Will were asked to design a tropical home in Alto de Pinheiros, Sao Pãulo, Brazil, they were charged with the task of incorporating the area’s lush greenery into a livable structure. Specifically, the team’s clients wanted one of the on-site trees to be worked into a sprawling 1,000 square meter plan. By the time construction was completed, an entirely new type of “treehouse” had been born.

Today, around half of the plot’s total area has been devoted to a stunning tropical garden. The tree in question can be found near the eastern corner, growing through the timber “waffle ceiling” that covers many of the home’s living areas. The rest of the house is almost as dramatic as this key feature, boasting a lavish outdoor swimming pool and a set of seamless transitions from one open-plan area to the next.

In 1935, Lawrence Perkins and Philip Will founded Perkins + Will in Chicago, Illinois. The firm now has offices in 24 major cities around the world. Above all else, Perkins + Will is committed to designing sustainable buildings that promote the health of the people living and working in and around them. When President Donald Trump recently decided to pull the US out of the Paris Climate Accord, CEO Phil Harrison had this to say:

“We at Perkins+Will reaffirm our commitment to design healthy, sustainable places that promote holistic well-being for people and our environment, and our belief that forward-thinking design is fundamental to advancing a competitive economy. This includes planning for and reducing the effects of climate change, because the best design solutions consider the future, making positive contributions and enduring over time.

Today, we are part of a sweeping national coalition of communities, cities, states, NGOs, universities, and corporations that are working together to drive climate action in the United States. These intrepid, progressive entities have committed to accelerating the rate of emissions reduction in the U.S. to the point where we meet our contributions under the Paris Agreement.”

The firm’s Sao Pãulo treehouse is a great example of their forward-thinking design strategies. Plus, it’s just a beautiful piece of architecture to behold. Everyone likes the concept of bringing the outside into their homes, but it’s not every day that one sees it executed on such a grand scale. To avoid harming this sizable tree during the construction process, Perkins + Will created a digital 3-D image of it before doing anything else. That way, its dimensions could easily be worked into their plans.

To build this treehouse home without affecting the surrounding landscape, the impressive timber grid that intersects the tree was also 3-D mapped prior to its construction. It was developed by Perkins + Will in collaboration with the renowned Brazilian engineer Helio Olga. This awning not only shades the home’s outdoor areas, but it also acts as a roof for some of its indoor ones. Crucially, the grid features a single opening that’s bigger than all the others. Why? To leave enough growing room for that massive tree, of course!

The post Tropical “Treehouse” in Sao Pãulo first appeared on Dornob.
