Not everyone can see past the dust and deterioration of an abandoned space and imagine a gorgeous, elegant design. Leave it to an architect to recognize all the potential, envisioning the changes that could bring the long unused structure to life. Of course, it doesn’t hurt when the abandoned building you’re starting with is a modernist classic by Philip Johnson.

The Schlumberger Research Center Administration Building, located in Ridgefield, Connecticut, was completed in 1952. Known locally as “The Philip Johnson Building,” the single story structure housed research scientists and the executive team for an oil and drilling equipment company. It’s set atop an underground garage, and designed in a style architecture fans will recognize as quintessentially Johnson.

It’s a shame we don’t have before-pictures. If we did, we could take in the full transformation of the building, which sat empty for a decade and required extensive restoration. It took BassamFellows eight years to complete the historic renovation, keeping all of the steel, glass and brick bones that make the building so special and accenting them with contemporary elements for a fresh update on midcentury modern style.

If there’s one defining feature of the space, it’s the abundance of natural light streaming into the glass and bricked-in spaces. The result is a feeling of connection to the natural world while remaining protected from the weather, traffic, and activity outside. There’s something serene about the simplicity of the pale gray bricks combined with warm wooden trim. The simple lines and stylish furniture from the firm’s collection reinforce this peaceful vibe.

The central courtyard, with its showcased curving evergreen tree, grounds the structure, and gives it a dash of extra personality. Operable panels allow free air circulation when the weather is nice, so adjacent lounge areas almost feel like they’re outdoors.

BassamFellows uses the building as their headquarters, design studio and showroom. To make sure they did justice to the original structure and its primary architect, they researched the building’s original ratings at the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library of Columbia University.

From the architects: “By converting areas that were originally designed as secretarial pools, BassamFellows created large lounge areas that serve as collaborative spaces. This minor change gives the building the perfect mix of private vs. public space and feels completely in step with contemporary ways of working. It’s a wonderful testament to good design that the building is as relevant today as it was radical then. The restoration project recently received a preservation award from Docomomo US.”

Prior to renovation, this building was “virtually unknown” as an example of Philip Johnson’s work. Now, it’s a fitting tribute to the American architect best known for his “Glass House” in New Canaan, Connecticut (1949), sculpture garden at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1953), and Johnson building at the Boston Public Library (1972).

Led by Craig Bassam and Scott Fellows, BassamFellows is a multidisciplinary firm producing architectural projects, modern interiors and high end furniture.

From the firm: “BassamFellows’ pioneering Craftsman Modern aesthetic, which marries architectural authority with a minimal-artisanal philosophy, was introduced with the debut of the iconic BassamFellows Tractor Stool at the 2003 Salone del Mobile in Milan. From its inception, the company has focused on building relationships with some of the world’s leading craftspeople, whilst forging innovative and intelligent collaborations across the worlds of architecture, branding and design.”

The post Abandoned Research Center Reclaimed as a Furniture Gallery first appeared on Dornob.

Urban Outfitters has released their fall 2019 furniture lines, and they have something for everyone.

The post Urban Outfitters’ Fall Furniture Lines Have Something For Everyone first appeared on Dornob.

Fashion trends seem to change almost daily. Furniture style preferences shift a little more slowly, but Urban Outfitters isn’t counting on that slow movement in 2019. Instead, they’ve introduced five phenomenal furniture collections to satisfy not only every taste but every budget.

The lines include more than 80 stunning, unique pieces that can complement rooms of almost any size or color palette. Styles range from sleek and modern, to retro and iconoclastic, to classic and antique. Materials vary from metal and rattan to rubberwood, lightweight Scandinavian wood, and mango wood. Any collection you or piece you choose can help make your home the ideal place to kick back, relax and enjoy the onset of autumn.

Aria Curved Metal Collection

Concentrating on tubular forms for frames and bases, the Aria Curved Metal Collection cuts a minimalist profile from bedroom to living room. Thin legs and inset fine points give the beds a delicate quality, a rack built to showcase record collections is ideal for a den or living room, and the white-on-white theme throughout is smartly smashing. Prices for beds are under $600, racks and small tables are under $200.

Huxley Mid Century Modern Collection

Tree-huggers will love the Huxley Mid Century Modern Collection for its stylish use of rubberwood—hailed as “environmentally friendly” since it comes from plantation trees that have already served a practical purpose. The dense grain of rubberwood is aesthetically appealing, and less likely to warp or shrink than other materials.

The rich wooden finish of the pieces in this line is warm and inviting, and the collection features nostalgic pieces from the mid-20th century. The assortment is designed for smaller spaces and is priced mid-range.

Lita Wood Slatted Collection

If you’re a fan of sleek, modern lines and light-as-air wood that pairs well with casually draped upholstery and chic slatted styles, the Lita Wood Slatted Collection will fulfill your decorating desires. From storage cabinets with adjustable rods and drawers, to kitchen carts that make entertaining easy, the pieces in this group are a little pricier than the others, but accordingly elegant.

Mikko Rattan Collection

Combining rattan and metal, the Mikko Rattan Collection harkens back to the diverse styles of the 60s and 70s, updating those older designs with refinement and class. Curved rattan over sections of exposed iron add a welcoming flair to the beds, and from settee sofas to bedroom dressers, the pieces have a warm, comfortable feel. Prices range from $180 for a nightstand to $800 for beds and chests of drawers.

Virginia Carved Wood Collection

Classicists will swoon over the Virginia Carved Wood Collection. This bedroom set features carved mango wood accented by metal, and includes a simple, mid-century vanity with a curvy tri-fold mirror. Whether you choose a natural wood finish or opt for the white collection, the vintage lines and tastefully underplayed details evoke old-fashioned romance. This collection is priced in the midrange—from the vanity listed at $480 to the queen bed at $800.

The new collections are available in full online. Select pieces are for sale in designated showrooms nationwide.

The post Urban Outfitters’ Fall Furniture Lines Have Something For Everyone first appeared on Dornob.

Just because something’s been done a certain way for as long as we can remember, doesn’t mean it’s the only way it can be done. Sometimes, a new interpretation of a common object can open up a whole new world of possibilities. Take stovetops, for example. They almost always look exactly the same, but why should they?

A lot of today’s kitchen designs are still based on the assumption that all homes require full-sized cooking appliances. But that’s not always true, especially in urban environments. Many people just don’t use their kitchens that often, or they’re only cooking for themselves. It’s about time we collectively rethink what we need from our kitchens (and the rest of our homes) and ask for designs that are more functional for modern lifestyles.

One concept that aims to save space and look good doing it is the Ordine from Adriano Design, a set of stove burners (or “hobs,” as they say in the UK) that hang on the wall when they’re not in use. The designers, brothers Davide and Gabriele Adriano, rightly point out that the common stovetop and oven range combo seen in most contemporary houses doesn’t meet everyone’s needs.

Today’s urban homes are getting smaller, so space is at a premium. Plus, more people than ever live semi-nomadic lifestyles, moving frequently for their jobs or to check out new cities. It makes sense to make home interiors more modular and transformable, tucking away seldom-used items so they don’t take up valuable square footage.

The Ordine stove breaks out of the ordinary in a variety of ways. First of all, its two-burner design is just the right size for many people who only cook every now and then. It features a touch-screen interface to adjust the temperature or set a timer. When it’s hung back up after use, it barely takes up any space. Plus, it has a high-tech look that fits in with other gadgets around the home, which is more than we can say for most kitchen appliances.

“Ordine! A revolution that will change the cooktop concept, a ‘burner’ that you freely place whenever you need to on our job and then, when you have finished, you just need to hang it like a cooking utensil or pot,” the designers say. “More freedom to interpret cooking space, modularity, grading … a small brick. Ordine transforms and creates a new order in things … in the kitchen … Ordine is a revolution — a deconstruction of the induction hob as we know it today. The hob is no longer an irremovable block in your kitchen, where the distance between the nozzles is never enough when you are cooking with larger pots. With Ordine, you will decide at what distance the nozzles need to be while cooking and how to put them back, leaving the surface free when you don’t need to cook.”

Flexible and adaptable, the Ordine is a clever way to free up space in small kitchens. Imagine how cool it would be if your entire kitchen was modular like this, so you had total control over how all the elements were arranged.

The post Future Kitchens: Minimalist Stove Burners Hang on the Wall first appeared on Dornob.

This Nordic electrical appliance company designs gorgeous coffee makers such as the Wilfa Svart Manuell. Winner of the Award for Design Excellence from the Norwegian Design Council, it is an object crafted – in cooperation with super barista and coffee connoisseur par excellence Tim Wendelboe – for pour-over style, manual hand-brewing. This process invites to slow down and be in the moment, because you pour the water over the ground coffee yourself. Even better, it doesn’t create as much waste as the popular pod and K-cup machines.
If that’s too much effort on a bleary-eyed morning, check out Wilfa’s Precision Coffee Maker, an elegant automatic filter brewer. Aficionados of this award-winning coffee maker rave about its precision temperature and water control, and the fact that it brews a “coffee to the Golden Cup standard of the Specialty Coffee Associations of America (SCAA) and Europe (SCAE).” It’s available in sleek aluminum and stylish black. Learn more at www.wilfa.no and shop at www.williams-sonoma.com.

“I have spent a lot of time over the past 2 years together with Wilfa giving them feedback and teaching them about coffee. The first result was the manual brewer “Svart Manuell”, but that was meant as a teaser and a tool for the coffee geek to play with while we waited for the automatic version. There is a lot of technology and work put in to this pretty coffee brewer, and I think it looks awesome. It also brews really good filter coffee, but still you need to get your basics right like any other brewing techniques:

Use traceable and freshly roasted and ground coffee of high quality

Use clean fresh water with low mineral content (Tap water in Norway is perfect in most cases)

Use precise measurements. I recommend 60-70g per litre of water depending on how strong you want it. Use a scale to measure.

Make sure you grind the coffee to the right particle size. Too coarse will give you a watery and sour taste. Too fine will lead to bitter tastes.”

So Kornacki’s sulfite intervention comes between the bottle and the glass.

The Üllo is a small filter that sits in the mouth of your wine glass. You pour the wine through it, removing sulfites and sediment while also aerating the wine. The trademarked process of Selective Sulfite Capture reduces the amount of sulfites in your wine to a much safer 10 ppm. (Obviously, if you have an allergy to sulfites rather than a sensitivity, you’ll want to talk to your doctor before indulging – even with the Üllo helping you out.)

To use, you just place the filter in the mouth of your cup and pour the wine. The Üllo consists of a dishwasher-save silicone cup on top and a small aerator on the bottom. In between the two pieces is the filter – it’s a small disc-shaped polymer device that looks a bit like a tea bag. It catches all of the sulfites and sediment before they have a chance to reach your glass.

The aerator can be turned off if you’d prefer to skip that function, and each filter will last through a single bottle of wine. Üllo is on Kickstarter raising funds for a first production run, so currently you can get one with a pack of five filters for $50 (retail value $70). You can also order an Üllo-specific decanter or carafe, or spring for the special countertop holder that catches the drips after you remove the Üllo from your vessel of wine.

The post Oh Joy!

Meant to look like a whale in the middle of a pleasant dream, the Dreaming Whale opens its mouth to hold your loose-leaf tea. Close the mouth and dip the whale into a mug of hot water and you’re minutes away from your comforting beverage.

Water enters and exits through small holes in the whale’s body, gently joining tea leaves and hot water in a happy infusion of the restorative drink enjoyed around the world.

The whale’s cute water spout is used to swish around the infuser as the tea is being made. But it can also be detached and used as a stirrer or decoration for your beverage of choice. This would definitely make a cute gift for the tea lover in your life, and it only costs $13. Get it at Gongdreen, where you can find other tea-related items and loose tea as well.

“Do you know the sperm whale? The oil of the sperm whale is known to be one of Earth’s best natural elixirs. The motif of this product is a sperm whale dreaming a peaceful dream somewhere in the deep sea. It’s like drinking Earth’s best natural elixir!”

“Slow down your day with a Dreaming Whale tea break. You can enjoy the tea time when your tea is gently brewed through the Dreaming Whale’s tummy.”

“Open the cap of the whale’s belly under the whale’s body and add the tea.
If you use the “stream of water” to put the whale in hot water, you can pump it conveniently. You can see the water coming up. If you want to stir tea, just use the ‘stream of water.'”

The Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair took place earlier this month, with over 700 exhibitors showing their work over five days. Part of the Stockholm Design Week, which also included the Northern Light Fair, the annual Swedish design festival showcased the best the region had to offer in both comfort and style, as well as the classic simplicity and utility of Scandinavian design.
Design from this region of the world has long been held up as a bastion of thoughtfully crafted, pared-back, and functional products, and following a year in which a global obsession with the Danish concept of hygge resonated with comfort seekers around the world, the fair felt particularly poignant. Notable names such as Danish electronics company Bang & Olufsen, Danish furniture company BoConcept, and—of course—Swedish homewares behemoth IKEA have been leaders in the field since the 1950’s and have been responsible for a minimalist genre that has influenced design at every stage of the process, from university drawing boards to manufacturing plants, and is still as relevant today as when it first started.
The Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair celebrates the best in Scandinavian design, and we have rounded up five of the highlights from the February 2017 festival.

Design Bar, Note Design Studio

Swedish design firm Note was invited to create the Design Bar, a restaurant and bar within the fair that aims to highlight a particular Nordic designer. In a romantic palette of pinks, blushes, and burgundys, the Design Bar exemplifies the best that Scandinavian design has to offer: class, purpose, and generosity. With the idea of making a warm and inviting zone to contrast the harsh Swedish winter outside, Note created a variety of seating areas, from round tables with plush seating, to linear bars upholstered with woven fabrics, attended to by wood and leather high stools, all immaculately detailed.

Maissi Bench, Studio Kaksikko

Finnish design firm Studio Kaksikko presented their Maissi Bench, an exercise in precision and craftsmanship. The bench is a purist’s dream, with asymmetrical, curved rails and a simple wooden plane for the seat evoking the stair balustrades and industrial pipes on which the bench was modeled.

Prison Furniture Prototypes, University of Bergen Students

A slightly unusual, yet highly commendable, set of furniture was debuted at the design festival. Students from Bergen’s faculty of design worked with staff from Norway’s correctional services to create a range of furniture designed to be more hospitable to inmates. A curved daybed aims to promote relaxation, a twin-backed chair offers to ease anxiety post-release by “hugging” the user, and a minimal standing lamp has been created with an easy design that can be replicated in a prison workshop.

Best Stand, Kinnarps

British office-furniture designers Kinnarps took away the prize for best stand. Their multi-platform construction was clad in blue, semi-opaque panels and acted as a testament to the brand’s 75 year history. The stand won for what the judges considered its reinforcement of the brand’s core identity, the fundamental purpose of a stand at a trade fair.

Outdoor Furniture, Tom Fereday

Australian-born industrial designer Tom Fereday channeled his outdoor lifestyle to create a collection of sturdy, durable and water-resistant chairs and a table designed for outside use. Created for Australian brand SP01, the furniture adheres to principles of honesty in their design. The chairs are formed by overlapping slender strands of metal wire to form ergonomic shells.

The post 2017 Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair first appeared on Dornob.

Designers prefer to think about a whole composition than a single piece, yet the way home hardware works does not always lend itself to this approach. Take the classic dichotomy of door+handle, for example – no matter how classic or modern, these are generally considered separate objects.

Albed has taken a slightly different approach, dispensing with knobs altogether and building the opening-and-closing functionality straight into the cores of doors themselves. Now if only they could do something about those hinges, too (so cleverly concealed but no doubt still there when the doors are opened). Handle-free doors might sound strange, but they operate in a cool way.

From recessed pull handles (and push buttons) to curved built-in handles that seem to fold out of the surface, these designers have developed a line of (both real working and concept models) that illustrate various other ways to reconsider the age-old relationship of major opening and minor fixture. Fad, trend or timeless design? Hard to say – we will see how people feel about getting so closely in touch with their everyday door.

“Venturing beyond the limits of imagination: RING is INNOVATION capable of surprising us once again; the handle is a circular hole hiding a SOPHISTICATED opening technology.”

“Habits are hard to lose, but when faced with the ELEGANCE of the BLOW door, one is faced with the essence of simplicity. The vertical grip of the handle becomes a natural operation. The door panel is no longer fl at, its form shapes into a wave and the handle is its inside groove.”

“Albed was founded in 1964 with the idea of making high-quality design aluminium complements. It has developed its style and its own production skills, while maintaining its original goals. Our products are made entirely in italy, with raw materials that comply with all environment and safety criteria.”

“A wide ranging production of doors, room dividing systems and walk-in wardrobes. These solutions can adapt to any space, to furnish rooms while creatively optimising every area of the home and office in a refined, thoughtful and innovative manner. Technology, know-how and our production cycle that is entirely an internal process, allows us to make products and offer a “tailor-made” service for every furnishing need.”

Here in the U.S., we only tend to think about our drinking water when there’s a problem: perhaps when our local filtration plant is knocked out by a hurricane, there’s been industrial pollution, or a story like the one about contaminated water in Flint, Michigan, hits the news.
Of course, access to clean drinking water is a constant problem for many people around the world, and Rorus, a company based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is working to solve that issue.

The company explains, “Rorus makes the world’s most usable and affordable drinking-water filters because safety needs to be simple.” Don’t think they’re using “simple” to mean “acceptable,” though, because the Rorus Core Filter boasts some impressive specs. For instance, it removes the three major types of waterborne pathogens: bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Independent third-party labs have since determined that the Rorus filter removes about 99.9999% of bacteria, 99.99% of viruses, and 99.9% of protozoa from drinking water.

These results mean the filter can protect people from diseases like cholera, norovirus, polio, salmonella, giardia, cryptosporidium, and E. coli. The company adds that its filter reduces poor taste, unpleasant smell, and cloudiness to make drinking and cooking water more palatable, too. To top it all off, the filter does not eliminate any of the essential minerals normally found in water.
Since it works a little like a magnet, the Rorus Core doesn’t need to employ any chemicals. “As water flows through, the pathogens are attracted and attached to our filter material, removing them from the water,” says the tech team. Independent lab tests show that the filter exceeds both EPA and World Health Organization standards.
The Rorus Spring is the container that houses the Core Filter, and it makes it easy for families to safely store water for drinking and cooking. While the quality of the product is the same everywhere, the Rorus Spring’s style varies from location to location. “We source containers locally to keep costs low, support local economies, and adapt our filter for different populations,” its designers explain.

Rorus’ FilterPack is yet another creative solution to the problem of providing easy access to clean water. It’s a backpack/water filter combo that’s ideal for everyday hikers and teams responding to any type of humanitarian crisis around the world.
The FilterPack is lightweight (essential for long treks) and collapsible for easy carrying when it’s not in use. The Rorus Core filters water at a rate of around 15 liters an hour, and it has an automatic safety shut-off to alert the user when it’s time to replace it. You don’t need to add chemicals into the pack, and it comes with visual instructions so it can be used safely around the world without language being a problem.

You can carry 20 liters of water in the FilterPack, which is enough to supply a family of six for a day, and a single filter will last up to six months if it filters that amount of water every day.
One of the FilterPack’s best features? It doesn’t require any electricity or batteries, so you can truly take it off the grid.

Right now, the FilterPack is only available in bulk, but you can order the Rorus Spring individually.

The post Rorus: Water Filter Backpack Combo first appeared on Dornob.

Ever an experimenter, British designer Tom Dixon has recently revealed a new series of complementary furniture and lighting that plays with expectations of physicality and form. “FAT” is an upholstered seating range that balances the aesthetics of minimalism with unexpected comfort using materials that are much more welcoming than they appear, while “OPAL” illuminates the room with translucent globes that look lighter than air.

Making its North American debut in February 2019 on the “Big Fat America Tour,” Dixon’s new collection is designed to hug the body in a variety of seated positions. The rounded cushions on these dining chairs, lounge chairs, and bar stools encircle you with molded foam when you sit down. The London-based designer says the “extreme simplicity” of their components, including the glossy black metal bases, is a testament to form following function “while maintaining a humorous silhouette and a reductionist aesthetic.”

There’s something instantly iconic about these chairs’ shapes, particularly in this palette of black, gray, beige, and ivory. The aim of FAT, and of many other Dixon designs, is to strip out all unnecessary complexity, leaving behind a refreshingly usable object that’s also gallery-worthy in its own right. The design process played a significant role in these results, starting with quality materials and intriguing shapes and using full-sized mockups and prototypes to produce pleasing proportions.

For OPAL, Dixon formulated a custom tinted white opalescent polycarbonate for the globes to produce a ghostly ethereal effect of soft, diffused light. The spheres were then blow-molded for a shape that’s just imperfect enough to appear organic. The collection is comprised of two different-sized pendant lamps, a surface-mounted lamp, a vertical floor lamp, and an arcing floor lamp.

Dixon notes that new technologies help spur his creative approach to these new pieces, particularly when it came to lighting. The digitization of the manufacturing industry is providing designers with unprecedented freedom to experiment with innovative new materials and small production runs of concept products.

Dixon’s website reads: “Tom is a restless innovator who works mainly in lighting, accessories, and furniture. From his departure point in the early eighties welding salvaged steel into radical furniture, he has constantly reinvented himself through a series of different design lives — working on luxury Italian goods with Cappellini, Creative Director at Habitat and Artek, creating plastics company Eurolounge, and finally instigating his own eponymous brand in 2002 to rethink the product designer’s relationship with industry.”

“The latest chapter of Tom’s design journey began in 2002 when he left corporate life to create his own eponymous brand as a platform for a series of new adventures in the design of products and interiors. 15 years on, Tom Dixon is now a widely celebrated global force in interior design, with hubs in New York, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, and Tokyo. Our 600 products range from lighting to furniture, from tableware through to fragrance, and are distributed in over 65 countries; they are instantly recognizable for their sculptural qualities and engineered materiality.”

A literal one, anyway.
Made from the same transparent blown borosilicate glass found in mad-scientist labs (or regular ones, for that matter), this pair of water-and-wine-pouring devices might make you think twice before taking a drink just for their slight creep factor. Forget about sappy Valentine’s hearts – this one is shaped just like an anatomically correct human heart, with wine standing in for blood in one half and water keeping the other transparent.

Designed by Liviana Osti, ‘Cuore’ is hand made in Italy by glass blower Tommaso Colesanti and available in a limited edition series. It’s capable of holding a liter of water in one half and a liter of wine in the other. The designer’s interest in science likely played a role in the creation of such an unusual carafe concept; she has a bachelor’s degree in physics while also teaching arts and design at the Bauhaus University of Weimar in Germany and the Free University of Bolsano.

Here’s the designer’s description of the project:
“Two glass carafes shaping a human heart when joined together. The heart is a reminder for the generally underestimated but essential role health plays in our lives. In order to prevent cardiovascular and blood pressure diseases we have to start with the root of the problem, our daily consume of food and beverage.”
“A wine decanter is built together with a water carafe. A half half coloured mix of red and white. Red wine stands for low pressure, water stands for high pressure. The organic heart shape has been developed into two different, stand-alone objects according to the natural division of ventricles.”
Do you find the rather gory nature of this handmade glass object off-putting, or would you proudly display it in your home?

The post Heart-Shaped Carafe & Decanter Set first appeared on Dornob.

However, the chair you place it over as a cover can (hopefully) pick up the extra pounds … and the ‘dressing’ has some basic structural rigidity from its thickness and shape.

Since the black foam material used for this “fake sofa” is both cushioned and porous, it adds some additional comfort in the form of seating support and plush arm rests but also lets you see through it to get a sense of the chair that is silhouetted inside. The result is a clean contrast between the actual sitting element – generally identifiable as wood or metal, folding or regular – and the lounger-shaped box around it. Neat or or nonsense, however, is for you to decide.
“‘Sofa-dress is a job of space design and a suggestion of furniture design. The act of putting on the clothes of the ‘sofa’ on the existing chair in itself makes the previous object a little more cushiony furniture and it also can achieve an intention as a unified space with the same cuticles. The ‘sofa-dress’ projects the past objects through the rays of space, which makes a new present without removing the past completely. Wrinkles that appear in the material within this design are possible to be ironed using steam like clothing.”

The post Secret Seat: Soft “Fake Sofa” Chair Cover first appeared on Dornob.

You could probably buy a set of rake or broom handles and a simple outdoor plant pot at the hardware store, put them together and basically make your own DIY variant in mere minutes, but the concept is brilliant.

In the traditions of the modern design movement, you can see right away how each part of the whole works structurally – the solid base anchoring the object in place and the flexible spokes sticking up, elastic due to their length and a warmer material to the touch. It would not take much to convince someone you paid a pretty penny for this one-of-a-kind designer object.

Best of all, it is also incredibly easy to see out it was built – a quick mental reverse-engineering reveals that the process and product share an elegant simplicity: concrete poured into a very basic form with straight lengths of bare wood added in a loose and casual way, perfectly suited to toss up a light summer jacket. This not only makes it an idea that is trivial to build off of, but again reinforces the modernist simplicity of its style.

Still, if you prefer to buy it pre-made, you’ll be getting your money’s worth in the form of high quality materials and beautiful design. The creator calls it a “spaghetti coat rack,” and it’s easy to see why. It’s produced by Danzo Studio.
“An extraordinary coat hanger that comes with a dispersed structure built from a barrel shaped base and a bundle of scattered wood sticks, of which the tips work as hanging pegs. The design is meant to be both intuitional and interactive, since it provides the freedom of adjusting the sticks in numbers and positions.”

The post DIY Concrete & Wood Coat Rack first appeared on Dornob.

It’s easy to see how a device like this could be useful for people who can’t stand for long periods of time for health reasons, or even just when you’ve worn uncomfortable shoes a little too long for an event.

The Sitpack is meant to be extremely portable. When folded up, it’s about the size of a tall drink can. To deploy it, you flip up the two outer parts which become the sitting surface. Under that, a telescoping leg unfolds to support your weight. The height is adjustable to fit your unique body and sitting position.
The device is made of ultra-strong polycarbonate and can support a person up to 150 kg (around 330 pounds). When folded, it’s just 16.8 cm tall (or around 6.6 inches) and is small and light enough to fit in your pocket. While the current prototype was 3D printed, the designers envision their product being made on a large-scale basis entirely in Denmark in a family-owned manufacturing facility.
When you’re using the Sitpack, you aren’t completely relaxing all of your muscles as you do when sitting; you’re still engaging muscles to keep you balanced. This means that your body maintains proper posture and healthy blood flow to the legs. Mono + Mono are currently raising funds for the project on Kickstarter.

The post Sit Anywhere on This Pogo-Like Device first appeared on Dornob.

But they’re not Photoshopped. They’re real, physical “glitched” textiles created by artist Faig Ahmed, who explores mutations in patterns that are generally predictable as a way to reveal the unlikelihood of perfect symmetry in our chaotic universe.
Taking patterns that have been used in textiles for centuries in places like Turkey, India, Persia and the Caucasus, Ahmed subverts them into something unexpected. Using a traditional loom, he starts with a familiar arrangement of shapes and colors, gradually manipulating them to reflect the kinds of glitches commonly seen on computerized devices.

The resulting textile art is a mashup of tradition and modernity, with a splash of Dalí-esque surrealism. Born in Azerbaijan, Ahmed is known for conceptual works that place a twist on traditional decorative crafts, deconstructing ancient patterns and forms and reimagining them in a 21st century context. Ahmed, however, says that merging various time periods is not as important to him as re-visiting older forms of expression, nothing that he’s interested “in the past because it’s the most stable conception of our lives.”

Ahmed’s approach to blending traditional rugs with computerized elements and modern art also helps break down divisions between art and craft, which can belittle means of expression that have long been considered women’s work, like weaving.
“I explore ancient traditions, cults and cultures,” says Ahmed. “I make my own research and as I communicate with it, I create art. My carpets, installations and embroideries are the result of this interplay. It is fascinating to observe the process of such an easy transformation of such ancient and stable objects. I am in love with textile. Because fabrics are objects that humanity is using from the beginning of times, till nowadays.”

“Another thing that interests me is pattern. Patterns and ornaments can be found in all cultures, sometimes similar, sometimes very different. I consider them words and phrases that can be read and translated to a language we understand. My art is an experiment. I want to examine the subject matter to see how deep we can go inside something accomplished and holistic and to observe the influence this kind of change can have on people.”

Particularly cool examples of glitch art, these new creations join dozens of others in the same series, as Ahmed continues to explore the transformation of objects that have been visually stable for thousands of years. What does it mean to adhere to tradition while still evolving, and look to it as a way to root oneself in the past as the world keeps moving forward?

Another twist on traditional rugs by German designer David Hanauer reveals hidden patterns in the built environments of human civilization, particularly in planned communities. Taking satellite imagery catalogued by Google Earth, Hanauer shows us that repetition, symmetry and other facets of what we tend to consider visually beautiful works surprisingly well when woven into traditional-style rugs.

The post Traditional Textiles Glitch Out first appeared on Dornob.

You need special soaps, shampoos, moisturizers and all kinds of other things for the little one. But with square cabinets and (usually) rounded containers, the mess of baby stuff can quickly overwhelm your bathroom storage. A line of baby toiletries called 4 Your Baby make it easier to keep everything you need close at hand without dominating your cabinets. The plastic bottles come in typical baby-friendly primary colors, which may not be ideal for style-conscious parents, but everything else about the design is spot on.

The bottles are square to fit more snugly against one another. Each bottle has a protruding lid on the top and a recessed area in the bottom. The top of one bottle fits neatly into the recess in another bottle, allowing you to stack them like LEGO bricks. Designed by Hungarian design firm Fontos, the bottles feature simple, uncluttered fronts. The minimalist aesthetic is accompanied by bright colors and interesting shapes to make bath time a little more fun for everyone.
For now, the 4 Your Baby concept is just a part of Fontos’ graphic design portfolio and not a real product you can purchase. But the easy way these bottles fit together and the way they adopt the simple, classic shape of LEGOs makes it seem like these should just be standardized packaging for virtually everything. Too many spice jars? Stack them like LEGOs. Paint cans falling over in your garage? Why the heck don’t they stack like LEGOs?
Designs like this could solve all sorts of problems. When the bottles are empty, you could either refill them, reuse them for new purposes or just wash them and hand them over to your child to double as toys. What’s not to love?

The post Toiletry Bottles Stack Like LEGOs first appeared on Dornob.
