These elemental color choices highlight different functions show off the sleek twist to this practical do-it-yourself furniture design.

The basic building blocks of this crafty storage unit series called Konnex is a set of three different boxes – each the same in shape but scaled up and down in size. Even with just three there are many layout options. With more, well, the possibilities are pretty much endless.

Shown here is the as-advertised base unit consisting of six modules (two of each size), but once you get the idea you could create anything you want … pyramids, towers, steps and so forth to fit any nook and cranny you have in your home.

And that is just thinking in two dimensions. What would happen if you started adding slots so you could build the system out from the wall as well, or use them to turn corners or even span the ceiling? The only catch: one could wish these were designed to pack flat, making them more mobile and save shipping space (and cost) but perhaps the next-generation variants will be … it just seems strange to have storage-system boxes that require, well, another box in which to store and ship them.

The post Modern, Mobile, Modular: DIY Slot & Slide Shelves System first appeared on Dornob.

By day, Domonique Brown works a normal eight-hour marketing job. By night, she creates beautiful artwork for huge brands like Target, Bath & Body Works, and Urban Outfitters. Brown’s unique crayon and marker art, which adorns everything from dinner plates and throw pillows to phone covers and tote bags, mainly features images of Black women, men, and families in vibrant, highly stylized colors and settings.

Her passion for creating Black art stems from her childhood as a minority in Pomona, California. “Growing up, I was often the only Black kid in my class, and I found it hard to find things that represented my background,” Brown says on her website DomoINK.com. “My father and I would go out of our way to find greeting cards that had images of Black families on [them]. We’d buy them from individual sellers because many retailers didn’t carry them.”

As an adult looking to decorate her own home, the artist recognized there was still a severe lack of Black art at big-box stores. That’s when she decided to do something about it by starting her own brand of art prints, apparel, and home décor in her spare time.

“Our voices, idea, and stories still remain unspoken for in the art world,” Brown says. “I want my portraits to tell unknown stories. I want people of color to be represented.”

One of her most popular prints is her “Black Hair is Dope” portrait, which depicts a Black woman with a head cover and long twisted braids. Brown says of the piece: “I created this portrait to challenge stereotypes about Black people wearing durags. It serves to humanize and normalize that this headpiece is an essential aspect of our culture.”

At the start of the pandemic, Brown was working two full-time marketing jobs, putting in 80-hour weeks and making roughly $130,000 a year. She then quit one of those jobs and started designing in her evening hours. Although “there were a lot of sleepless nights” in the beginning, her artistic investment soon paid off. Brown’s after-hours work now amounts to less than two hours a day now and earns her $22,000 a month, thanks to sales on her website, Etsy shop, Society6 shop, and retail partnerships.

World-renowned companies including Disney, Samsung, and Lowe’s quickly took notice of Brown’s distinctive style and asked for collaborations. She’s even created art for the L.A. Lakers.

This year, Bath & Body Works commissioned Brown to craft a piece in honor of the Juneteenth. The result was an image of a Black family enjoying a picnic on the national holiday. She also recently completed a one-of-one artwork to decorate the walls of a Santa Monica Dr. Martens shop.

While her art career has officially taken off, Brown continues to work a traditional job as a marketing manager for an insurance company offering health care options to low-income Californians — but she loves making her mark with her side hustle.

“My ultimate goal is to make DomoINK a lifestyle retailer that can be a source of representation for those who are underrepresented,” Brown says. “The feedback I have gotten from people who feel seen by my work has been incredibly gratifying, and it inspires me to grow my business even more.”

The post Domonique Brown’s Art Brings Representation to People of Color — and Earns Her $22,000 a Month first appeared on Dornob.

The latest collection by Singapore-based firm Atelier Pendhapa is so unique, you can’t help but feel drawn in by its unusual shapes and proportions. Avant-garde yet still functional and comfortable, each piece is a conversation starter. Pendhapa is currently displaying core “collectible” pieces from its Javanese black teak line at Paris gallery Zebres, including a console, tables, stools, chairs, a variety of small vessels, and a sofa.

It’s immediately clear why such pieces would be displayed in a gallery: they are indisputable works of art. The sculptural “Khanda” table is a standout, consisting of three separate black wood pieces that can either be pushed together or separated for flexible usage. “Khanda is a playful yet grounded piece with a certain sense of timelessness in its solid mass,” explain the designers. “Its function varies from a low table, a pair of stools, a bench… it is a dynamic piece of furniture which evolves in a room by changing its function over time.”

A pair of stools called “Cuddle” function much the same way as the Khanda table, coming together like living creatures seeking comfort. The makers explain that the design was born “as a story between two beings,” bringing two seated users together in close proximity or separating them as more autonomous beings.

Likewise, the alluring “La Nuit Étoilée” armchair embraces the user with a mysterious shape and a color palette inspired by the midnight sky. “As we approach it from the back, it appears like a piece of the moon, levitating in space,” says Atelier Pendhapa. “ [The inside] reveals a radically contrasting interior in soft night blue. A swivel mechanism is concealed within its solid dark wooden structure.”

The “Mast” chair aims to bring balance to the body with its solidity, which “anchors the object in space.” Its curved design consists of just two elements, a base, and a circular back that folds around the body to provide a sense of intimacy. The “Anchor” chair achieves a similar effect in a slightly different shape, with a lower center of gravity and a soft blue velvet seat.

The “Sarani” trio of objects takes its name from the Sanskrit word for “an endless spiritual path,” and includes three pieces designed with this notion of infinity embodied in their curving shapes. Atelier Pendhapa collaborated with a local fine metal craftsman to bring the objects to life, pairing their signature black teak with Kuningan metal. The objects include a striking coffee table, a vase, and a bowl.

Other pieces by Atelier Pendhapa are just as captivating, like the “Naksathra” sofa with its skeletal black frame and structured white cushions, the graphic black and white “L’Écorce” bench with its built-in side table, and the invigorating “Admani” bench, a collaboration with artist Helena Bajaj Larsen.

Founded in 2019, Atelier Pendhapa consists of designer/architect duo Antonin Hautefort of France and Ignatio Tenggara of Indonesia. Hautefort and Tenggara bring together their diverse cultural backgrounds and a shared passion for local craftsmanship to design spaces and objects that evolve over time, yet feel timeless and always in dialogue with their context.

The post Atelier Pendhapa’s Dramatic Black Teak Furniture Collection Debuts at Paris Gallery first appeared on Dornob.

Not too long ago it would have sounded like futuristic science fiction, but here it is – the world’s most expensive luxury bed that is not suspended but, instead, is tethered to the ground so it does not simply drift up and away.

Seven years of study went into the development process of the permanent, non-degrading magnetic support system for this seven-figure sleeping platform. The bed frame itself is a simple rectilinear board, painted black, that appears to hover on invisible legs.

As the old argument goes: if you are going to spend a third of your life lying on something, you might as well make it something nice. Since it can hold up over fifteen hundred pounds, well, weight will not pose a problem for most people.

To be fair, it is worth questioning the real value in such an expensive solution. How is this floating magnetic bed so fundamentally different from a normal bed – or a hanging, water or other specialty sleeper? And what is it about that experience that makes the design worth as much as a mansion? Perhaps it is just another plaything for the rich, for now at least, but who knows … as technology evolves maybe it will be a teenage fad ten years from now, too. What the military did for flight, architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars may just do for the sleep (or entire furniture) industry. Maybe.

“The Floating Bed was designed as a pointer towards gravity. An omnipresent force that dictates our lives here on earth. It was done by making the exception, a Floating Bed that seems to fall up instead of down.”

“Essential in the long process of testing, engineering and designing was to make a piece of furniture that, visualy, is not dictated by gravity. Four thin cables that are tethered to the floor communicate hanging upside down. The direct surroundings and custom made covers form an integral part of the product. It can be used as sofa or mere art piece.”

The post $1.6 Million Dollar Magnetic Hover Bed first appeared on Dornob.

The concept of tiny houses on wheels took off in the public imagination about a decade ago, and ever since then we’ve seen virtually every conceivable iteration of a hand-built mobile dwelling. But for all their diversity of sizes, layouts, roof shapes, and materials, few have ever looked quite so strikingly sculptural as this: the Base Cabin by Studio Edwards.

First and foremost, there’s the jagged silhouette with its massive triangular planes, the sharp ridge of the roof smoothly transitioning into the walls on all sides. Its sheer aerodynamic angularity makes it stand out from the crowd. When working with such a small space, most designers choose headroom over visual flair, but with the Base Cabin, it’s hard to deny just how cool the sacrifice of that space can ultimately look.

Then there’s the choice of stark matte black for the entire exterior, punctuated by a handful of well-placed windows and double-width folding glass doors. The black rubber stretched across the cabin’s lightweight steel frame produces an overall effect of abstracted mountains, and it makes the whole structure easy to tow.

Inside, marine plywood lines the floors and ceiling for a feel that’s clean, modern, and only about a million times more pleasant than the average plastic camper. That’s exactly the point for the Victoria, Australia-based Base Cabin Building Company, who hired Studio Edwards to come up with a “considered, functional, and flexible space that provides a fresh design approach to the micro-home typology.”

As you can see, the resulting product is a camper for lovers of architecture and design — and one that many people would be proud to travel with. The only downside might be all the curious onlookers who will want to ask questions about your highly unusual cargo.

It’s remarkable just how much Melbourne-based British architect Ben Edwards managed to fit within this “cocoon,” including a bathroom and storage space. The built-in window seat with bookshelves underneath is a particularly nice touch, situated beside a rear window that opens completely to the outdoors. Unlike many tiny houses, there’s no loft in the Base Cabin, but its high ceilings negate the claustrophobic feeling that can come with smaller campers.

“The design is inspired by the A-Frame cabin and iconic airstream trailer,” says Edwards, adding that “the A-frame is structurally efficient and uses less material than conventional portal framed buildings. [The Base Cabin] is mute in its appearance and clad in black rubber to blend into its surroundings.”

“A cozy sleeping space sits below the A-frame roof, with triangular windows framing views [of the outside world. The cabin comes] complete with a central bathroom and shower bathed in light from the roof-light above. A kitchenette to the rear of the cabin provides kitchen functionality, with a window seat and fold-out table adjacent to a large operable glazed facade.”

Naturally, sleek modern architecture on wheels also costs a bit more than the average camper. The price of this cabin starts at $99,000 AUS, and only three have been built so far. If you’re intrigued, check out Base Cabin’s website for contact information, or follow the brand on Instagram.

The post Base Cabin: Dramatic Black Mobile Retreat by Studio Edwards first appeared on Dornob.

Thinking about building, remodeling, or redecorating a bathroom this year? You might want to check out some of the latest and greatest modern bathroom features and trends for 2020. Whether you just want to stay up to date on the best styles in the industry or are looking for the coolest new add-ons, this list will help guide you in the right direction.

Bold Marble

Image via Maddux Creative

Skip the standard Carrera marble and try something a little bit out of the ordinary instead. Unusual marble patterns like Zebrino, Arabascato, and Paonazzo add artistic flair and the grounding influence of natural materials in one. And when it comes to 2020 bathroom trends, this design by Maddux Creative practically has it all: an interesting marble pattern, gold accents, open shelving, and vessel sinks.

Brass and Gold

Image via Blaze Makoid Architecture

It’s hard to be mad about the continued popularity of warm, elegant-looking brass and gold accents in interior design. You can bring these metallic materials into the bathroom in all sorts of ways, including lighting, mirror trim, faucets, and cabinet hardware.

Dramatic Black

Image via HGTV

Bathrooms are usually fairly small, so they may not seem like great candidates for dark hues. But you don’t have to paint your whole bathroom black in order to pull off this trend. Black brings in some contrast that sets off other elements in the room: daylight streaming in through the windows, living plants, white walls, beautiful marble, gleaming lighting fixtures, and reflective surfaces. Try incorporating it through your vanity, an accent wall, shelving, or accessories. Black cast iron tubs set against white walls are also very popular this year.

Integrated Lighting

Image via Grand Mirrors

Good news for your makeup application routine: we’ll likely see a lot more diffused LED lighting integrated into bathroom elements like mirrors, shelves, and vanities in 2020. The effect is much softer than that of a standard lighting fixture, and it tends to be a lot more flattering, too.

Open Shelving

Image via Septembre Architects

The idea of open shelving in the bathroom isn’t to keep all your clutter in full view, but rather to mimic a spa-like feeling with well-curated vignettes. Shelves on the wall or beneath your vanity might display baskets full of plush towels, aesthetically friendly bath oils and salts, plants, or apothecary jars full of cotton balls.

Smart Features

Image via Kohler

If you’re disappointed that, in the decidedly futuristic-sounding year of 2020, we still don’t have all the cool tech predicted back in the 80s, you can at least soothe yourself with a shower that’s perfectly customized to your preferences down to the single degree. Smart features are invading one of our most private spaces, and while to some people that sounds like a nightmare, to others it’s a dream.

For instance, Kohler has a new smart toilet with built-in speakers, ambient lighting and, for some reason, Amazon Alexa support. Their Verdera Voice Lighted Mirror supports Google Assistant, as well, playing music, telling you the weather, or changing the color of the integrated lights. And Kohler’s PerfectFill bathtub technology will draw a bath “to your preferred preset temperature and desired depth with a simple voice command.”

The post 6 Bathroom Trends That Feel Fresh for 2020 first appeared on Dornob.

Sick of losing your spot when you stop reading halfway through an article? Hate to leave magazines simply strewn about the coffee table? This two-in-one storage solution is a minimalist solution for saving the page and stacking your light reading material.

The angled roof provides a way to make the page without bending or creasing the magazine, while also making it the most accessible of the bunch (sitting on top) for when you want to pick back up where you left off.

The interior area works as a way to keep magazines roughly straight, while still allowing you to grab out another from the pile out either the front or the back. For a single sheet of wrapped metal painted in a solid modern color (black, red or white), this little design idea from Rudolph Schelling Webermann, aka DING3000, goes a long way.

Striking or melodramatic, beautiful or gloomy — your personal take on houses with black exteriors might depend on your view of the color itself. Conventionally associated with mourning and morbidity, black is often seen as dour and unwelcoming, especially when used with a heavy hand. But for those who appreciate it, black is effortlessly chic, the perfect counterbalance against which brighter colors, busy patterns, and dynamic textures can be properly appreciated.

Monochromatic black houses are certainly a bold choice, but they’re growing increasingly popular, and a new set of rural cottages in the Hudson Valley present an argument to continue the trend.

Thomas Phifer and Partners, an architecture firm based in Manhattan, completed “Hudson Valley House II” in 2018. Set in an idyllic clearing full of native grasses and surrounded by conifers and deciduous honey locust trees, this “house” is really a series of small black buildings arranged around a central communal garden. Perhaps you’ll look at the photos of these stark pointy structures half-obscured by trees and liken them to the foreboding huts of scary old witches, or perhaps you’ll be intrigued, drawn in by the interplay of the textural shingles and the lush green branches.

Two of the structures are connected, housing a living and dining room in one and a bedroom in the other. The third, which looks like an archetypal gabled house that’s been cut in half, offers the residents a tranquil chapel from which to contemplate the setting, just as singularly dark inside as it is out. But venture into the other structures, and you’ll find pale wood-lined spaces that feel bright, light, and well-ventilated, perfectly complementing their dark facades.

Each of the pavilions is covered in cedar shingles treated with Swedish black tar, a natural surface treatment made of 100-percent pine tar. Not only does this ancient treatment impart the look of black paint, it also acts as a natural preservative, creating a water-repellent vapor barrier that will keep the wood looking beautiful for decades on to come.

Set against the lush greenery of summer, the overall effect of the Hudson Valley cottages is subtle, but one wonders just how much the mood of the complex might change once winter arrives.

The firm’s website reads: “Since founding Thomas Phifer and Partners in 1997, Thomas Phifer has completed an expansion of the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, the United States Courthouse in Salt Lake City, Utah, the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, North Carolina, the Raymond and Susan Brochstein Pavilion at Rice University in Houston, Texas, and numerous houses in the Hudson River Valley of New York State.”

“Since 1997, Thomas Phifer and Partners has received three Design Excellence awards from the General Services Administration and more than 20 honor awards from the American Institute of Architects, as well as numerous national and international citations. His projects have been published and exhibited extensively in the United States and overseas. A monograph on the work of Thomas Phifer and Partners was released in 2010 by Skira Rizzoli.”

The result is a clean contrast between the actual sitting element – generally identifiable as wood or metal, folding or regular – and the lounger-shaped box around it. Neat or or nonsense, however, is for you to decide.
“‘Sofa-dress is a job of space design and a suggestion of furniture design. The act of putting on the clothes of the ‘sofa’ on the existing chair in itself makes the previous object a little more cushiony furniture and it also can achieve an intention as a unified space with the same cuticles. The ‘sofa-dress’ projects the past objects through the rays of space, which makes a new present without removing the past completely. Wrinkles that appear in the material within this design are possible to be ironed using steam like clothing.”

The post Secret Seat: Soft “Fake Sofa” Chair Cover first appeared on Dornob.

You’re far less apt to give away something you spent hours creating than something you grabbed at a cheap price point from a big box store, for example. It’s not just the time you put into the project, but your creative touch that gives it extra value. So it’s no surprise that modular furniture systems that let us be the designers of our own couches, armchairs and sectionals are growing more popular.
Stylish and interactive, this particular kit-of-parts couch, chair and stool system looks like large, heavy pieces of solid furniture at first glance. Once you know what to look for, though, each interchangeable modular object becomes visually legible on a whole new level.

Deconstructing the Modi system of transforming furniture from Moredesign, one finds it is not as simple as it first appears. The black base is a straightforward framework in which one can ‘plug’ various white cushion elements to create various kinds and configurations of useful seating. Want your sofa to have a back and two arms, like a conventional design? You can do that, or create configurations that are more like chaise lounges with a single arm and a long back surface. The limitations are up to your imagination.

Stood side by side, these convertible furniture elements can stretch to make full-length, L-shaped or other wrap-around modular couch and guest-bed sets.

The history of the hermitage is a long and fascinating one, telling of monastic religious figures, social outcasts, novelists in seclusion, war deserters, and the kinds of mysterious older women often assumed to be witches. Humble and small, the habitats preferred for a life of utter solitude are typically found in remote places like forests or mountaintops.

They’re often shed-like in their scale and the low sophistication of their materials, containing little more than a bed and a table. Some of the people who occupy them might be seeking wisdom or healing in asceticism, while others might be fleeing outside influences.

A small, lone cabin in the woods might still strike fear in the hearts of hikers who stumble upon it, especially if it’s particularly rustic or unkempt – but even modern remote hideaways can look like they belong in fairytales or horror movies. When a man in the Czech Republic wanted to build himself a retreat where he could “hole up” and recharge in between demanding projects at work in the city of Prague, he approached Uhlik Architekti with an unusual vision.

No doubt, the finished project is odd, and still, perhaps, a little unsettling. Pitch black on the outside, it’s tipped up onto a boulder on one end, almost as if it fell from the sky. Gazing at it within these woods, one could imagine all sorts of strange backstories for its presence. The truth about its usage may be mundane, but the cabin itself certainly is not.

The architects call the setting “a remote and somewhat forgotten place” in the woods between Central and South Bohemia, where the client comes from. Finding a particular sense of magic there, the architects decided they’d build the cabin with their own hands using wood from nearby forests and the skills of local craftspeople. The exterior is charred pitch black, while the budget-friendly plywood interior glows amber by lantern light after dark.

Steps lead from the standing-height bedroom at the entrance up to a resting spot elevated over the boulder. Each step provides a place to work, eat or sleep, with the space beneath them devoted to storage. One of the benches even folds over to create a double bed.

Both of the glassed-in openings can be enclosed and protected by large shutters, one of which is operated by an old-fashioned pulley and hand winch. The angled roof, covered in asphalt tiles, easily allows water to drain off to one side, diverted from the entrance by the rail of the pulley wheel. All of the steel components were crafted by a local blacksmith, in keeping with the traditions of hermitages around the world, yet the overall effect of the “Forest Retreat” is strikingly contemporary.

Small as it is, the space is configured either for solo habitation or for performances that can be enjoyed by a group, with the steps acting like stadium seating. One of the glass windows offers views of the treetops, while the other gazes down the rocky hillside. When the shutters are closed, the volume is certainly mysterious: a black monolith, its purpose obscure. What would you think if you were wandering around in the woods of Bohemia and discovered a structure like this?

The easiest way to give virtually any structure a more mysterious air is to paint it black. Somber and dramatic, the color has a psychological effect on viewers, calling to mind all the darkest and strangest aspects of our universe, from shadows to the black holes in outer space. When paired with traditional architecture, black paint can carry connotations of witches in fairy tales, but pair it with more contemporary structures, and an entirely different mood emerges. In the case of one alpine hotel overlooking a forest in South Tyrol, Italy, the effect is surprisingly complementary to all of the rocky crags and rich shades of green found in the surrounding landscape.

Designed by the local firm Pedevilla Architects, Hotel Bühelwirt is a modern take on the classic hiker’s hotel. Such lodgings can be found in mountainous regions all over the world, serving as gathering points for travelers seeking a deep connection to the nature in the area. Often remote and sometimes only reachable by way of a long hike, these accommodations are also typically as rustic as their surroundings, empasizing warmth and comfort above all else. Hotel Bühelwirt is located on an elevation called Buehel in the hamlet of San Giacomo, so deep into the Italian Alps that it’s nearly in Austria.

If you look closely at the hotel in person, you’ll realize that within its blackness is actually a very dark shade of green inspired by the nearby Black Forest. The shade was also chosen to mirror the look of the mountains on a cloudy day. The wood itself is locally sourced, like most of the other materials used for the project. The jagged shape of the black volume spills down the mountain from an original, much more conventional inn built by the current owner’s grandparents, acting as an extension that adds 20 new rooms, a restaurant, and a wellness area to the existing facilities.

Step inside, and you’ll find a series of serene guest rooms with a light, airy feel that sharply contrasts with that of the exterior. Every one of the rooms looks out onto the landscape through a spacious window with a built-in lounge area, perfectly framing the views. Minimally furnished but wonderfully cozy, the rooms are finished in a soft cloud-gray plaster, which itself is brightened by the presence of larch wood siding. Modern chairs by Prostoria transform into spare beds on demand. Some rooms even include telescopes on their balconies and freestanding bathtubs.

The restaurant boasts a strategically placed play area for children and a kitchen for guests who prefer to prepare their own meals. A sauna with stepped seating looks out onto the garden and a gorgeous river below. Spa access, breakfast buffets, picnic snacks, and dinners all come complementary with each stay. Double rooms are available for around €60 per person.

Hotel Bühelwirt was a finalist in the “Interior and Architecture” category at the 2018 AIT Awards, a world-renowned architectural awards ceremony.

“The reduction of things to their essentials…the characterization of traditionally necessary things…the demand for convincing clarity and simplicity in architecture…and the conscious need for architecture to express its purity — those are all the basic parameters within which Pedevilla Architects work and create,” explain hotel owners Michaela and Matthias Haller.

“‘The connection between today and the world of yesteryear…the connection to the locality and its history: that makes the difference. And now the expansion of the traditional inn with this advanced architecture which, though spectacular, will still seamlessly integrate itself into the landscape.”

Pavilions are often erected at big global and civic events to highlight the virtues of the latest technologies, a particular national character, or good design itself through architecture. World fairs, biennales, and international expositions always make use of these specialized structures, and the 2018 Winter Olympics are no exception to that rule. Taking place in Pyeongchang, South Korea from February 9th to 25th, this year’s games will feature a pavilion that champions advancements in the creation of color — more specifically, the creation of Vantablack VBx, the darkest shade of black in the world.

The pavilion was commissioned by Hyundai as a means of promoting its new hydrogen fuel cell vehicle and designed by British architect Asif Khan, who describes himself as a “closet astronaut.” This characterization seems especially appropriate considering the pavilion’s concept and internal environment. The building was imagined as “a window cut into space” on the outside, but internally, a multisensory hydrophobic water installation carries 25,000 drops of water along grooves in the floor and pools them at its center. The contrast between these two designs is pronounced to say the least. Being that it’s the “darkest building in the world,” it’s quite a shock to see the futuristic, pristine conditions inside of it.

Vantablack is a color that’s been in development for a few years now, and it even made headlines back in 2016 when the infamous artist Anish Kapoor gained exclusive rights to its use. Of course, the Hyundai Pavilion only uses the advanced Vantablack VBx, a sprayable version of the original pigment with an entirely different compositional structure.
Construction began a steel frame, which was later clad with curved walls and sprayed with the paint. Since Vantablack VBx absorbs almost all light, the depth of the resulting structure is almost impossible to gauge. Reflecting nothing, it looks like a black hole. The curved walls enhance this effect, and they’re made even more mind-boggling by the installation of tiny, camouflaged LED rods at their tips, which themselves look like stars when lit up. Khan says, “It’s a preoccupation of mine, trying to create experiences to better understand where we are now as humans, placing ourselves in the big picture. I’m interested in that feeling of the sublime when you pull back the curtain of reality. It’s a different way of experiencing architecture.”

For humans to get a more coherent sense of the structure, it’s necessary for them to move around it and see it from all angles. Khan adds: “It changes as you approach it. From far away you see it as a surface of blackness, it just looks like a void. As you approach you pick out the stars, and as you get closer the stars begin to move in parallax, which means they appear as a three dimensional body. As you walk past it they’re almost globular in their clustering.”

The post Asif Khan Creates “Darkest Building On Earth” For Winter Olympics first appeared on Dornob.

Proving once again that beauty and art are in the eye of the beholder, an old coal crane that was last used 73 years ago has just been transformed into a 50-square-meter luxury hotel and meeting sanctuary in Nordhavn, a harbor located in Copenhagen, Denmark. Owner Klaus Kastbjerg and architect Mads Møller from Arcgency first unveiled this beauty back in 2017, and now “THE KRANE” is officially open to the public.

Four Magnificent Stories

Upon entering THE KRANE, visitors are greeted by a reception area on the ground floor. Right above that is a meeting room called the “GLASS BOX,” which offers a 360-degree panoramic view that’s sure to inspire magnificent ideas and make them soar. Atop this think chamber is an inviting spa that boasts a glass wall and two tubs for visitors to relax and absorb the enchanting vistas in. Møller once described the environment around THE KRANE as “an immersive, multi-sensory experience…the integration of sensations – sight, sound, and stemning (the Danish word for ‘atmosphere’).” The fourth story, which has simply been dubbed the “KRANE ROOM,” is comprised of a lounge and terrace covered in Dinesen Douglas outdoor planks.

Black On Black

Few designers have the vision or courage to create art that only focuses on one color — especially if it’s a non-color like black. But Kastbjerg and Møller insisted that the crane’s coal-loading history be reflected in the redesign so that visitors would give the exterior just as much attention and appreciation as they’d give the interiors. Furnished with handcrafted furniture and accessories by local artisans, THE KRANE’s high-end decor is nothing if not a master class in craftsmanship, style, and quality. Commenting on the minimalist black-on-black interior, Møller states: “Black plays a pivotal role in muting and minimizing visual distractions so people feel almost enveloped in the interior. There are hundreds of different shades of black. Depending on the time of day, you can see so many subtle nuances.”

Awesome Accents

To complement the black beauty of THE KRANE, a mixture of leather, wooden, stone, and steel embellishments have been scattered throughout its interiors. The furniture on each level was made-to-order to match the structure’s theme and dimensions. Dinesen Douglas planks cover most of the floors, ceilings, and walls, all of them finished with an exclusive mega-black oil, which itself adds an air of intensity to the atmosphere. Only in the conference room are the planks lightly colored and refined with lye and white oil.

Perfect For Work & Play

Each floor of THE KRANE was specially constructed to meet various needs. Business transpires in the conference room, with a breathtaking view of the ocean and harbor outside. The sleeping quarters accommodates two and features the best and most lavish Danish designed furniture. Visitors receive a personal concierge, who personally picks them up at the airport and remains on call throughout their stay. A personalized assortment of wines and bubblies are sure to end the evening on the ideal note. The spa, which is lined with stone from top to bottom, sports two large baths and a marvelous glazed glass wall for a window on one side. Luxury amenities include Wi-Fi, a flat screen TV, air conditioning, heating, and a projector.

The post THE KRANE: From Coal Loader to Seductive Sanctuary first appeared on Dornob.

Have you ever wanted to own a little corner of the world that you could escape to whenever you wanted? Thanks to a new prefabricated shelter by Japanese furniture, clothing, and homewares brand Muji, you can now do just that. The shelter, or “hut,” as Muji has called it, is a one-room dwelling that can be set up anywhere. That is, anywhere in Japan, as the company has not yet planned any international sales. Muji’s goal in creating the hut was to provide people with a space of respite and contemplation that could be sited in a garden, a beachfront, a hillside, or even in a field.

The hut measures 3.8 x 3.5 meters and consists of a single interior space separated from an external front porch by a sliding glass door. The room measures 9.1 square meters, while the porch provides an additional 3.1 square meters of space. Though the structure’s total surface area of 12.2 square meters might seem small, it’s a pretty generous size for a hut. The prefab has an almost perfectly square floor plan and a lean-to roof that pitches downwards from back to front, allowing water to run off easily. A slightly off-center window in the hut’s back wall promotes cross ventilation and permits through-views to the front to take full advantage of whatever idyllic setting the shelter finds itself in. With its sliding door open, the cabin can comfortably fit three to four people. Residents and guests alike will be able to enjoy protection from the elements indoors without having to isolate themselves from the surrounding external environment.

Nearly every part of the Muji hut was built using Japanese wood, from its timber frame to its exterior cladding all the way down to its interior wall paneling. The hut’s external walls are lined with blackened cedar boards, which have been burnt to become extra durable and to acquire antiseptic properties. Muji borrowed this technique from Japanese shipbuilding practices, in which wood is burned and stained to give it the strength to withstand harsh ocean tides. The prefab’s roof is made from structural plywood that has been covered with asphalt and a corrugated sheet of aluminum-zinc alloy for weather protection. The internal surfaces are finished with a simple cypress veneer, creating a minimal background over which owners will be able to decorate and express their individuality. The hut rests on a concrete raft foundation to keep it off the ground and has a mortar-finished floor for easy cleaning.

Muji says of the cabin, “It’s not as dramatic as owning a house or a vacation home, but it’s not as basic as going on a trip. Put it in the mountains, near the ocean, or in a garden, and it immediately blends in with the surroundings, inviting you to a whole new life.” This is only the latest in a series of prefabricated shelters by Muji. Two years ago, the company released a trio of mini-cabins and a test prefab house. The hut retails at $21,000 and is currently scheduled for a fall release.

The post Muji Designs Prefab Timber Huts in Japan first appeared on Dornob.

It’s not really enough for a coffee maker to just be an ugly drip machine producing mediocre watery brews anymore. At least, not for those of us who uphold the consumption of this energizing manna from heaven as perhaps our most important morning ritual. So what happens when you’re a coffee connoisseur and also a design nerd who desires aesthetically pleasing, matching items adorning every surface in your home? Well, a matte black set of impeccably designed coffee making tools, for one. Have you ever seen an espresso set sexier than this?
The ‘Collar’ set by Italian studio Something Design for Danish brand Stelton marries Scandinavian minimalism with Italy’s reverence for the ritual of making coffee. One glance at this series of four black, brass and wood objects is enough to tell you that the designers take coffee seriously. The simplicity of these tools encourages users to relish each pleasurable act that goes into producing a cup of java, from manually grinding the fragrant roasted beans to spooning in the sugar at the end.
It’s a beautiful union of Scandinavian design principles and modern aesthetics of the sort that would fit into the most avant-garde of interior designs. The warm tactile veined oak of the handles, the sheen of the Teflon coated steel and the juxtaposition of angles and curves all come together to create a coffee set so beautiful you’ll be happy to get up a tad earlier to use it rather than dropping into the corner cafe. In addition to the stovetop espresso machine and the grinder, there’s a milk jug and a sugar bowl, and the pieces will be available individually when they debut on Stelton.com in September for $45-$85 each.

The espresso maker is a modern take on the moka pot, also known as a macchinetta, a stovetop contraption that brews coffee by passing boiling water pressurized by steam through the grounds. While the original moka pot is flashy and reflective, with a faceted vessel that flares at the top, the Collar is restrained in its finish and silhouette, but maintains the essential triple-chambered setup of the original. The lust-worthy Collar is practical and functional but also exceptionally beautiful, and it’s easy to imagine this set in use with the most exquisite varieties of coffee on the market.
Something Design Studio is a collaboration between Daniel Debase and Federico Sandri, which “evolves along a continuous dialogue encouraged by spatial, cultural and behavioral observations,” the designers themselves explain. “Multiple experiments with different materials and a deep understanding of production methods form the basis for a much broader thinking where objects are never considered purely on their own but always as part of a bigger picture.”
Collar isn’t the only sexy coffee set offered by Stelton, which is known for its selection of beautifully minimalist home goods. The shop also offers the Theo Coffee Maker by Francis Cayouette (pictured above), made of matte black stoneware and bamboo. This pour-over-style coffee maker appeals to all “slow brew” filter coffee fans and comes with a silicone collar to protect your fingers.

The post Coffee Is The New Black: Meet The Sexiest Espresso Set Ever first appeared on Dornob.
