The CP collection comes packaged as a groovy laser-cut set to be assembled at home. Giving new and cutting edge meaning to ‘flat pack’, you can go all ‘zen’ and build the dream lamp.

Great gifts for DIY enthusiasts, lovers of model airplanes and design-led cheats – “I made that!” If you get it wrong, hopefully you can dust it off and start all over again. All the electrics are taken care of – you just worry about the fiddly bits. Though what’s to worry about? It’s easy, and it looks hard. Now you can show off about it.

The CP standard lamp takes to the floor. Elegant and striking, its splayed stance is almost anthropomorphic as open and friendly, it stands to attention like an enthusiastic dog. Oh and never forget – you made that!

“The laser cut lamp series are all DIY-packages. In other words, they come in a kit to be assembled by you. The ‘ribs’ of the lamps are cut out of MDF by our very own laser cutter, which gives the sides a black color that matches with the cord and fitting.”

“The lamps are produced in a social work facility. The lamps come in four different sizes and styles. But they all have some classical as well as modern elements in them. We are really happy with the balance in pricing and quality for this series. Real Dutch Design that is affordable for everybody. That’s how we like it.”

Brooklyn-based designer Jake Wright was surrounded by military-related objects from the time he was a child. Born to an Air Force Pilot and a military defense contractor, Wright was naturally drawn toward these materials in his design work. Known collectively as Stockpile Designs, Wright’s line of furniture and home objects is based on obsolete and decommissioned military equipment.

“This lamp is made with the tail fins of a 100-lb bomb from the Korean War. Paint and corrosion are removed to expose gleaming steel, interrupted by rough machinists marks from the factory. Finished with a nickel socket, elegant cloth-wrapped cord, and a natural linen shade. Included is a card outlining the piece’s history and care instructions.”

“Base is 29″ from table to harp (where the shade attaches), and approx 7.5″ in diameter; shade is 17″ in diameter and 12″ tall. Made to order, ships approximately four weeks from order date.”

The guts of these Korean War-era bombs have been scooped out and replaced with lamp wiring. Stockpile Designs also offers replica bomb lamps for those who like the look of the unique fixtures but aren’t comfortable with having a disabled weapon in their home.

“Cluster bombs are deployed as huge cylinders packed with explosive bomblets. At a pre-defined altitude the casing of a cluster bomb opens, spilling the bomblets across a wide area. First deployed during WWII, they were most widely used during the Vietnam War. American forces dropped hundreds of millions of anti-personnel cluster bomblets over Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. Nearly a third failed to detonate on impact, and are still responsible for hundreds of injuries and deaths every year.”

One of the most striking designs from the collection is the Bomblet Pendant. It’s made from a “lazy dog” bomb that was never explosive, but could be incredibly destructive when dropped from airplanes – kind of like vertical bullets. Wearing one around your neck as an adornment might seem strange to some, but perhaps it can be seen as an expression of non-violence.

Is there any adult who didn’t enjoy making and watching shadow puppets as a kid? The “Bird in Hand” lamp from designer J.P. Meulendijks brings back memories of shadow birds, bunnies and all of the other creative manipulations we used to love making with nothing more than our hands and a light.

A flock of statue-still hands is situated in a circle around a hanging light in this intriguing fixture. The shadows they cast on the walls and floor closely resemble the creatures that kids all over the world create with their own shadows.

Moving around to different positions in the room and looking at the shadows from different perspectives would change the objects you see in the abstract shady shapes.

These outstretched, interlocked hands seem to resemble more than just a novel way to surround a light. Their interconnectedness is reminiscent of the way parents and children join hands when playing. Perhaps the overlapping hands also represent the many, many generations that have enjoyed making shadow puppets since long before electric lights made it easier.

The hands are made from a material created by the artist himself. ECOLOTEK is a fully compostable material made of hemp fibers, minerals and binder. The Bird in Hand lamp is available for €1066 (around $1400 US).

“This big eye-catcher is based on, and tribute to the universal art of hand shadows; making shadows on the wall using your hands to create birds, rabbits, and other figures. Playing with light and hand shadows is a centuries old past time long before electric light was invented. ‘ BIRD IN HAND’ plays with this concept: All of the hands are positioned to look like a flock of birds, flying out in circles. The shadows cast on the wall looks like birds. This results in a very expressive, dynamic and striking looking lamp , with layers of humor and poetry hidden in the design.”

In their 2017 catalog, Estonian lighting studio Mari Lights displays a range of innovative fixtures. Engineer Tauri Mae and jeweler-artist Mari Saarepera founded the company in 2012, combining their distinct backgrounds to create a line of contemporary lighting reminiscent of the mid-century emphasis on craftsmanship and durability. Mari Lights’ designs are sleek, simple, and modern. Mae’s academic training and experience as a fabricator have given him a thorough understanding of manufacturing techniques, while Saarepera’s work as both a blacksmith and a jeweler have taught her how to work through a creative idea from start to finish. The result of their talents is an artful, uncompromising style.

Each of the pieces in Mari Lights’ newest line of fixtures bears Saarepera’s signature craftsmanship and is simultaneously subtle and attention-grabbing. The “North Chandelier” marries an industrial cool with old-school nostalgia for an arresting effect that is not easily forgotten. The team employed century-old neon making methods alongside modern-day manufacturing processes and materials to create this unique fixture. The contrast between the chandelier’s contorted, white neon tubes and classic black frame makes for a centerpiece that both bears a touch of history and looks towards the future.

The duo’s new “Black” pendant lamp has a simpler aesthetic and strips away everything but function and necessity. On their website, the team cites a quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry as reflecting the goal of this design: “Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” This fixture is minimal, professional, and offers a high-end look that would fit in with nearly any décor. “Black” is made from smooth aluminum and finished head-to-toe in a fine satin paint. However, the thickness of the shade doesn’t diminish the glow of the high-intensity bulb within. The pendant lamp still casts a bright beam of light on the space beneath it.

The in-the-works “Ambiguo” collection will come in three different forms: a pendant lamp – like “Black,” a wall-mounted lamp, and a simple chandelier. Each fixture is two-sided, and each side has its own half-obscured, half-illuminated light bulb. The mirrored look of this lamp’s two sides could make for a futuristic collection of uplights and downlights inside a home. “Ambiguo” is, like many of Mari Lights’ fixtures, built for its function. The lamp arose out of a need for more light in Northern Europe, where the Mari Lights studio is located, and was designed to be able to shine in multiple directions. Mari’s biggest concerns when designing lights are functionality and style, and the Ambiguo collection is a perfect example of this union coming to fruition.

Tauri Mae is also quite fond of function, explaining: “There is no true perfection, but I think we might just be stepping on its heels by seeing that what’s on the inside is as important as what’s on the outside.” In terms of form, design, and aesthetic simplicity, Mari Lights’ latest collection seems to have brought the company a bit closer to that standard of perfection.

The post Mari Lights: Luxury Lighting for the 21st Century first appeared on Dornob.

Generally fan art comes in the form of drawings, sculptures, digital renderings and the like – a little less often it takes the form of furniture objects like this light that pays tribute to the classic AT-AT Walker from the original Star Wars movies.

It looks a bit like a long-legged wooden side table at first, but a drawer slides out to reveal the hidden ‘head’ of the walking vehicle. In turn, the resulting composition appears a lot like the mechanical legs and body of the AT-AT strider. The fact that it’s a table and a lamp in one, with a functional drawer, just makes it that much cooler.

Of course, you would not need to know the pop-cultural reference to see that this design by LifeGoods is neat regardless of context- though having the sci-fi savvy to recognize the robotic body implied in the form might help a bit when trying to explain this work at a dinner party (or geek film festival).

That’s the beauty of this piece. While a lot of furniture and home decor inspired by pop culture can feel kitschy, overly literal and cheap, LifeGoods’ version of an AT-AT in table form feels refined, elegant and truly useful. It could fit right in to all sorts of homes, whether or not any other Star Wars references are present.

“We are fascinated by wood and its codes,” say the designers, who were recognized for the piece at the [D3] Awards in Cologne.

“We pick up antique details of cabinetwork and give the object a look which is totally contemporary due to its dimensions. We explore the limits of the wooden piece by expanding its legs and by creating a drawer that functions as a light dimmer. The lamp is like a science fiction object but characterized by the warmth and the preciousness of woodwork.”

While some designers may be relatively limited in terms of what inspires them, others can find inspiration in the most unusual places. One such man is Fabio Antinori, who since the mid-1980s has created many one-of-a-kind exhibits and objects for the home.

“One day, I entered a large sporting goods store, where a large number of wheels were displayed in the bicycle department,” recounts Antinori. “As a daily cyclist, I was fascinated by that vision, so I decided, almost instinctively, to take three (wheels) of different sizes.” This was an example of an impulse buy with a creative purpose that was not fully formed. At first, Antinori had no idea how he was going to repurpose the wheels, but felt like there still must be some way he could use them. Then something happened that had nothing to do with cycling that gave his creative instincts a clear direction.

“A few years ago, the first high-capacity LED strips began to appear on the market, so the idea of associating a known object — a wheel — with a new emerging one — the LED — led me to the first experiment,” he adds.

When you bike to work everyday like he does to his studio, you form a personal connection to it — or at least more so than you would to driving or taking public transit. This closeness is undoubtedly another part of the inspiration that helped Antinori realize his vision.

“I have always loved (Marcel) Duchamp’s art, so perhaps it was my subconscious that guided me there,” he reveals. “The fact remains that all the people who came into the house and saw this strange object — an illuminating wheel — hung from the ceiling, were struck by it.”

The positive feedback that he received from friends, family, and associates soon got him thinking more in commercial terms. He recounts: “I understood the potential of the idea, and so I started to think of it as not only an extravagant object — a unique but approximate piece in the realization — but instead as an object that had all the characteristics of a product to be reproduced in series, of high quality, which could be part of the large family of lamps.”

To go from having an inkling of undefined inspiration to thoughts of productization is the path that many successful entrepreneurs take. It is proof that a simple idea born on a day that you were not expecting can quickly put you in front of customers all over the world, like at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York, where I had the pleasure of meeting with Antinori in May of 2019.

It took Antinori two years to develop the technical aspects of the lamps. In case you were wondering, the wheels themselves are stationary and cannot spin. He also came up with the marketing campaign for the lamps, which in turn got him thinking about his idea in broader terms. “I created an image and a communication strategy, (which included) conceptual films, the website, and graphic design,” he explains, “until I found myself creating a brand that could contain these curious objects, named CYCLAMPA.”

A trademark brand of his company Kaleideas, CYCLAMPA resonates with customers because of its relationship to the environment. It would be wrong to create a product that blends energy-saving LED technology with a zero emissions bicycle, only to wrap and ship it in an excess of plastic. For this reason, Antinori only uses plastic for a few components, but the majority of the packaging for the lamps is recycled cardboard. “The bicycle (and the light) become a cultural object,” he explains. “Watching it stimulates us to return to environmental issues, where sustainability can marry beauty.”

Along with their environmental significance, these lamps also carry an emotional meaning for Antinori. He says: “These lamps represent for me the desire to look beyond (the usual), and to discover everyday objects, like a banal wheel, that can still suggest something new.”

The post CYCLAMPA: The Upcycled Bike Wheel Lamps Born from a Trip to the Local Sporting Goods Store first appeared on Dornob.

As we adapt to the idea of sharing ourselves online, there are those adopting that same strategy to connect us in subtle ways when we are not at the computer – like this creative multipurpose night light in the shape of an archetypal gabled house. In a fun twist, it’s connected to the IoT (Internet of Things).

The so-called Good Night Lamp starts with your own house-shaped lighting fixture, but allows you to expand your collection with smaller homes that reflect that activities of loved ones.

And of course, how you cluster or distribute these may be a reflection of where you want illumination at different times of day (based on expected occupancy) or simply how you want to arrange and remember who is where.

Unlike Twitter or Facebook status updates (or even FourSquare check-ins) these are simply signals of presence – home or away, awake or asleep, set to states determined by their users.

“Turn a Big Lamp on and Little Lamps which you’ve given away turn on too. Anywhere in the world. Use the Good Night Lamp to tell a loved one ‘now’s a good time for a chat’, ‘I’m thinking of you’ or ‘call me when you get home’. You decide. As your family grows or moves away, you can add as many Little Lamps as you want. “

“We partnered with technology company Eseye to connect your lamps to global mobile networks. You don’t need wifi at home but you need enough mobile coverage to receive text messages. Plug your lamps in and they just work!”

“The Good Night Lamp is part of the permanent exhibition at the London Design Museum which is on the top floor and called Designer, Maker, User. We’ve also been featured in exhibitions at the Dublin Science Gallery, the National Science Museum of Vienna, the Stephen Lawrence Gallery in London and the National Science and Media museum in Bradford.”

According to this notion, there are certain patterns and proportions that occur in nature, which go into the design of churches, temples and monuments but are also revered by mathematicians and philosophers. Think of the spiral and a snail shell. Or the Fibonacci sequence. Cozo in San Francisco wants to bring geometric art into your home via lights, sculptures and other designs.

Their nascence began with an installation project called HYBYCOZO in 2014. After you turn it on, the lampshade warms up and begins to change color. It slowly goes from nighttime dark to early morning glow to midday sun.
It takes a few minutes for the lampshade to turn completely light, mimicking the slow and subtle beauty of an actual sunrise. The Solarise shows off some of London’s most iconic skyline features, which is a plus for everyone who has ever visited and loved the city. Watch the light shift in intensity like a real sunrise in the video below.

“The ‘Solarise’ lampshade depicts a subtle image of the London skyline and mimics the effect of the sun rising. Sunrise sets the city aglow and energizes people. As the sky gets brighter, the skyline appears as one of the most attractive views and symbolic images of a city.”
“The sky is printed with a thermochromic layer that changes colour in reaction to heat. When the light is switched on, the heat of the bulb causes the sky to change from dark to light and creates the effect of the sun rising gradually over a timespan of a few minutes.”
Want to get one of these city skyline lamps for your own home? They’re available for purchase through Lauren Moriarty & Co. You could also try to DIY your own, non heat-reactive version with an easy tutorial from Just Crafty Enough that uses a straight pin to poke holes through the shade.

The post Heat-Reactive City Skyline Lamp first appeared on Dornob.

It goes without saying that the lighting in any space is extremely important. Aside from making it possible to perform daily activities, the light can add to the ambiance and style of the room. In many cases, it can make or break the overall design and feel. Needless to say, it doesn’t hurt to give the lighting some extra thought. And if you have the capacity to spend a pretty penny, extravagant options for luxury lighting may be on your radar. That’s where Tempo Luxury Home comes in.

Based in New York City, Tempo designs one-of-a-kind accessories, soft goods, and more. The mastermind behind the brand is Joe Ginsberg, a Manhattan-based artist, interior designer, sculptor, and painter. Thanks to his arsenal of skills and talent, the finished products embody Ginsberg’s varied expertise. His work has appeared in multiple major residential and hotel projects.

While everything by Tempo produces is something out of a dream, the brand’s knack for lighting is especially alluring. Hand-blown glass is infused with soothing shades and eye-catching texture. The thought that each piece is created by hand is already an awesome concept; it’s an excellent way to showcase something entirely unique in your space.

An Eye for Pleasing Silhouettes

Another noteworthy aspect of Tempo’s lighting collection is the use of shape. While most big box retailers stick to conservative forms, Tempo makes it a point to push the envelope even further. You won’t see average lamps and figures here. In some pieces, even the actual light bulbs stray away from the average piece. Talk about a major conversation starter.

Tempo’s exquisite, distinctive style works best for spaces that embrace a modern, sophisticated style. Each fixture works especially well with colors, prints, and patterns that make a minimalist statement. Simplicity is the name of the game with Tempo; it only makes sense that the surrounding décor embodies this tone.

Furthermore, each piece can even double as the focal point of a room. In a kitchen, a creation by tempo can work especially well over a table or island counter top. In the living room, it can create a relaxing atmosphere when paired with plush pillows and abstract art. You can even use it to replace a chandelier in the stairwell, if you have the capacity to do so.

Designing A Room Around the Lighting

If you’re lucky enough to have a reading room or home office, a piece by Tempo can also upgrade the room’s vibe. But because the style of a Temp creation is so noticeable, your best bet is to choose the piece first. From there, you can build the room around it. As with any decorating adventure, this is where mood boards and Pinterest can come in handy.

While a piece by Tempo is quite the investment, it sure beats shelling out the cash at another chain retailer. A luxury brand like Tempo is especially fitting for those that value sleek design, craftsmanship, and a unique interior space. Home owners that want to make a purchase that they’ll love for years to come will also adore Tempo. After all, it’s safe to say that you won’t find a similar piece anywhere else.

Scabetti

Taking the company name from their child’s mispronunciation of the word “spaghetti,” creative couple Dominic and Francis Bromley founded “Scabetti,” their sculpting business, back in 1999. The duo’s objective has always been “to produce beautifully considered, sometimes quirky, but always desirable objects, made with pride and quality as locally as possible.” Operating out of a studio in North Staffordshire, the Bromleys design and produce every one of their sculptures by hand, making each ceramic piece unique from the rest. The company is set apart from its competitors thanks to its unbelievably lifelike works and commitment to using high-quality, English-sourced materials. In recent years, their products have become immensely desirable in both domestic and luxury markets.

Shoal

Scabetti’s award-winning “Shoal” installation was first conceived of as a collection of 1,500 English fine bone china fish, all appearing to “swim” in the same direction around a large lighting fixture. John Bromley—Dominic’s late father and world-renowned sculptor—fashioned the original clay figures that would eventually become the inspiration for the project. Shoal was first revealed to the public in 2007 and has since been commissioned for several public buildings and private residences. Every sculpture bears the artists’ signatures as a mark of authentication.

Thin, steel wires coated in white nylon are used to suspend the ceramics from the ceiling. The pieces are hung from varying heights to create a cloud-like swarm, mirroring the appearance of an actual school of fish. The installation’s upper framework is crafted from steel and covered in a powdered white finish to blend it into the artwork. Of course, not every Shoal has to be the size of a grand foyer. Today, smaller, more manageable options exist for personal use. For instance, the “tabletop” Shoal comes in the form of a bedside lamp. Small chandeliers are also available for dining areas, hallways, offices, and living rooms.

In 2009, Dominic and Francis revealed a glass version of Shoal at the 100% Design show in London. The piece consisted of an astounding 386 kiln-formed clear fish. Scabetti has since discussed a colorful future for their glass Shoals, though we have yet to see how that vision will manifest.

Other Iconic Collections

As breathtaking as it might be, Shoal is not Scabetti’s first commercial success. In 2003, the company unveiled their “Drawn to the Light” project: a similar installation consisting of several abstract, “three-leaf” cluster forms suspended around a central light. Much like the “Shoal” fish, these clusters were made from pure white bone china to achieve a captivating, translucent aesthetic. When lit up, a Drawn to the Light installation casts whimsical shadows all across the walls of the room it’s in, literally drawing people’s attention to the light. The team’s “Goldfish” collection, which features 186 golden fish hanging from 24ct gold-plated framework, has also been met with positive reception.

Where to Order

Head over to Scabetti’s website to peruse their extensive portfolio, where you can obtain quotes for each design upon request. You can also request “artistic installation” for some of the pieces, in which the Bromleys will personally piece together and unveil your order.

The post Diving into Scabetti’s Bestselling “Shoal” Design first appeared on Dornob.

Himalayan salt, a rock salt from the Punjab region of Pakistan, has become the latest health fad due to a number of benefits that it is said to possess. Being less processed than both table salt and sea salt, it is Himalayan salt is considered the purest form out there and the best for human consumption.
However, it isn’t just for eating. Himalayan salt can actually clean the air around you, as well as bring a more harmonious vibe to your home. One way many people have chosen to integrate this into their living space is by using salt lamps. These lamps absorb circulating water vapors from the air that can contain pet dander, smoke particles, pollen, or even harmful bacteria and viruses, and they are attractive and inviting. With their pinkish-orange color, they give off a beautiful calming light while they work to benefit your health. Saltean, a company that aims to bring us back to our more natural surroundings, offers a variety of salt lamps that cater to different tastes, styles, and needs.

How Do These Himalayan Salt Lamps Work?

Himalayan salt is hygroscopic, which means it attracts water molecules to itself that may contain particles that are harmful to your health. When the salt retains these vapors, the air around you becomes cleaner and fresher, which can improve your breathing. These microscopic compounds remain on the salt instead of circulating through your environment. That’s where the “lamp” comes in. The heat from the light bulb causes the water to dry and traps the pollutants onto the salt, which allows it to continue working to clean your air. The water vapors are re-released into the air as clean molecules free of pollutants. Depending on your environment, the volume of pollutants in the air, and your breathing abilities, Himalayan salt lamps come in different shapes and sizes to ensure every need is met.

Which Salt Lamp is Perfect for Me?

Saltean has a full line of Himalayan salt products to choose from, and each serves a specific purpose. The Natural Salt Lamp works to detoxify the air, increase blood flow and energy levels, help you focus and concentrate better, and even aids in creating healthier sleep patterns.

Another great choice is the Leaf Salt Lamp. This boasts a more exotic leaf shape that is ideal for any room in your home. Like the natural variety, the Leaf Salt Lamp increases blood flow and energy levels, but is also beneficial in stress reduction, relaxation therapy, and can help in the treatment of conditions like dementia or insomnia.
The Drop Salt Lamp is designed to resemble a drop of water and aims to help with sinus ailments and reduce redness or swelling. It is perfect for the bedroom, as it can work while you sleep.
If lamps aren’t your cup of tea, Saltean also offers other products made of Himalayan salt that also contain the same properties. From cooking plates that cleanse your food, to the chunk bowl for a different appeal, the company gives you many choices in introducing Himalayan salt into your everyday life.

Adding a splash of playfulness to a creative design usually gives a product a colorful jolt. Need proof? Check out OWL paperlamps, the fruit of the imagination of two architects based in Lisbon, Portugal.

“We were inspired by the origami art of creating paper figures, but we were looking for more than just another animal figuration,” say Hugo Formiga and Teresa Almeida, the owners, creators and designers at OWL paperlamps. “We were seeking true liveliness in our creations, so it was clear from the start that our concept had to combine light with larger-scaled paper models.”

Now their colorful creations are available for people to enjoy in their homes — after they put them together. Don’t worry; you don’t have to be a crafting genius or model-maker extraordinaire. The models come in different levels of complexity corresponding to their size, the amount of detail in their design and the number of pieces.

The designers recommend the Barn Owl for beginners, since it is the smallest and easiest lamp to assemble. OWL paperlamps actually lives up to its name by offering a full trio of barn owls for beginners. The designers say it takes about an hour to assemble each of these, but they promise that you can check their website to find some tips and tricks if you are nervous.

Barn Owl 1 is white, but you can choose from eight other colors for the second and third birds. Stick with a traditional owl color if you like, or go pink or yellow — it’s up to you.

Once you’ve honed your skills, you can make your way through the rest of the models, tackling the Night Owl, the Parrot, the Emperor Penguin, the Small Penguin or the Tortoise if you choose. While we love the cute little Barn Owls, Aurora, the Night Owl, is a majestic way to illuminate your living room. The Emperor Penguin is also striking, and while you have color options for him too, we have a soft spot for the blue back and wings with a pure-white tummy.

Parrot lamps bring a sunny look to any room, even in the depths of winter. Perch them where you will, with tails hanging over ledges or shelves, and guests will give them a double-take when their eyes set on them.

The Tortoise may be slow, but he’ll grow on you. Affectionately called “Fred” by Formiga and Almeida, the tortoise is designed with plenty of detail in his shell that pops with bright color when the light is switched on.

The lamps are made out of high-quality 160-gram paper, which allows for flexibility as well as sturdiness. Formiga and Almeida put a lot of thought into the colors of the paper: “They were carefully selected to create different and unique ambiences when the Paperlamps are lit up,” they explain.

“Each Paperlamp design presents individual features enhanced by the animal’s movement and position,” they add, “and glowing in the dark is the ultimate effect to bring out each creature’s liveliness.”

Lamps or art…? We think these can be both. And we can’t wait to see which creatures will be added in the future to expand this lively lamp family.

The post OWL Paperlamps Bring Light to Life first appeared on Dornob.

Crystals seeded onto discarded French chandeliers and candelabras literally bloom like flowers over time, growing as if they’re alive. For his ‘Overgrown’ collection, artist Mark Sturkenboom accumulated unwanted objects and utterly transformed them, taking ‘trash to treasure’ to a whole new level. The chunky, irregular crystals are reminiscent of ice or salt and have a wild, uncontrollable appearance, mimicking what much of the Earth might look like if humans disappeared and it were left to its own devices.

That’s the idea behind the series, says Sturkenboom, who envisions “relics from a desolate flooded world.” After poring through junk shops and curbside toss-aways for antique brass chandeliers in Paris, the designer plated them in 14 karat gold and coated them in a crystal growing fluid he brewed himself, creating “the perfect conditions to set a hyperevolution in motion.”

The pieces in the Overgrown collection are presented in their finished state, but it would have been cool to see the whole process as the crystals developed, changing the shape of each object over time. They definitely look like they could have been pulled from the frozen sea a few thousand years from now, as the artist intended. They’re available via Sturkenboom’s website, ranging from 850-1200 euros.

More from the artist

“Our world is cluttered with stuff, how would the world look like a few thousand years from now? Overgrown is a series of chandeliers and candelabra that appear to be relics from that desolate flooded world where the influence of time is key. A theme that’s intertwined with Sturkenboom’s oeuvre. Atelier Mark Sturkenboom designed a fluid, based on minerals, which allows objects to grow crystals over a period of time.”

“He reclaimed antique French chandeliers and candelabra and created the perfect conditions to set a hyper-evolution in motion where every object grows out to be a unique piece, a modern interpretation of a crystal chandelier. These pieces are part of Sturkenboom’s ongoing fascination of the influence that hyper-deterioration has on modern life, glimpsing in the future. It is also possible for us to transform museum pieces, inheritance pieces or special objects to your liking.”

The post Old French Chandeliers Become Living Lights When Seeded with Crystals first appeared on Dornob.

The deepest depths of the oceans still remain a mystery. It’s a place where ancient, bioluminescent creatures seem to live suspended in a dreamlike state. The order of jellyfish is pretty well explored, but they still have sense of alien magic. California designer Roxy Russell was inspired by these water inhabitants to has dream up the Medusae Collection of jellyfish lamps, gorgeous pendant lights with poetic names like Hydra, Ophelia and Medusa, characters from Greek mythology.

The diaphanous Medusa Pendant Lamp, ornate Polyp Pendant Lamp and ethereal Ophelia are made from velum finish polyester Mylar and white powder-coated aluminum. The designer works in recyclable PET (polyethylene terephthalate, a form of polyester), yet is very aware of the problems created by plastic debris in our oceans and the irony of adding to our ever-increasing plastic landscape. But she believes she is doing so consciously. After all, you wouldn’t toss these lamps the way one would empty water bottles or fast food packaging. The lamps are meant to endure, and possibly even remind us of the fragility of our ocean eco systems.

“The ocean is such a boundless source of inspiration for myself and many other people, in all fields. Unfortunately, I am also very concerned about the fragile state of it’s very complex eco-system.”

“I wanted to bring to the surface, and illuminate the growing problem of plastic polluting our oceans in a way that makes people inspired to help. We have a floating island of plastic garbage in the Pacific that is twice the size of Texas. Up to 70 percent of this plastic is below the surface, broken down into tiny pieces, becoming a toxic part of the eco-system. Countless fish and birds die from mistaking these bits for food.”

“This is an opportunity to look at how we might be contributing to the problem. Most people think it’s ok to use plastic bottles because they throw them in the recycle bin or think someone else will, but what they don’t realize is that much of the plastic that is manufactured never gets recycled.”

Maybe you’ve got a faceted glass terrarium, a beautiful transparent vase or just an exceptionally favored bottle of whiskey laying around that you’d like to literally highlight like a work of art. The ‘Baselamp’ by Luke Lamp Co. lets you turn nearly any object into a sculptural DIY lighting fixture, so long as it can sit flat and isn’t too opaque to transmit light. Handmade in New York and built for use almost anywhere in the world, it’s currently up for backing on Kickstarter.

The base is made of solid walnut or bamboo, set on an aluminum heatsink to ensure that it doesn’t overheat the object it’s used with or the surface it is placed upon. The LED bulb used for illumination won’t get too hot anyway, however, and a recessed touch capacitive dimmer switch makes it easy to customize the level of brightness.

At full blast, it packs a vibrant punch with 410 lumens, yet won’t transmit any UV light (so no bottles of fine liquor will be harmed by using them as a lamp.) The bulb is covered with a Makrolon Lumen XT polycarbonate diffuser, and the plug-in power adapter works on all voltages.

Want to snag one of your own? Pledge $99 or more to get the bamboo version, or $109 for the walnut version. Kickstarter rewards are due to start shipping this August.

More from the designer

“Whether it’s your favorite bottle of whiskey, a glass incense burner, a vintage notebook, a flower-filled vase, a particularly imposing action figure, or even your amazing quadcopter (while you wait for the batteries to charge) – the uses for Baselamp are endless, and limited only by your imagination.”

“Baselamp was designed and refined over the past year and a half with a focus on versatility and ease of use – with an integral chip-on-board LED and a recessed touch-capacitive dimmer switch, we’ve created a lamp that is not only super bright (410 lumens!) but also doesn’t create too much heat or any UV light (a particular concern for the aforementioned whiskey application).”
