To paraphrase a rather overused saying, one person’s trash is another’s treasure. The things we throw away are often still completely usable in some way – it just takes a bit of imagination to see their potential. Experimental architecture firm Raumlabor saw potential not only in objects, but in 24 teenagers from all over Italy. This amazing recycled sanctuary shows the power of positive thinking.

In one week, the teens turned piles of garbage into this impressive building, dubbed Officina Roma. The small structure contains a workshop, a sleeping area and a kitchen, and everything is made of what was previously considered trash.

Officina Roma is more or less a three-dimensional collage that one can actually step inside of. It is made of old bottles, used car doors, discarded furniture, trashed wood, recycled oil barrels and even partial car bodies.

Although it was only a temporary installation, the building was a reminder to viewers to think more clearly about their lifestyles and how they too can easily reuse and recycled old materials. The building techniques used were simple enough for even the most inexperienced builder to relate to, yet the statement was bold enough to inspire nearly anyone.

More from Raumlabor

“The OFFICINA ROMA is a villa entirely build out of trash. It consist of a sleeping room, a kitchen and a work shop. The plan lacks a living room, a comfort zone, instead there is an empty work shop in the center. OFFICINA ROMA is an experimental building practice, build within an one week long workshop with 24 high school students from all over Italy.”

“The building is composed as a collage: A kitchen entirely build out of old bottles, the sleeping room with walls from used car doors, the workshop using wooden windows and old furniture and the main roof set from old oil barrels and used dry wall profiles.”

The post Teens Transform Piles of Trash Into an Amazing Recycled Sanctuary first appeared on Dornob.

A range of furniture from French designer Géraldine Biard is meant to provide comfort and relaxation for people living with dementia. The line, called Jardin d’Hiver, includes a credenza, a console table, and two bedside tables. Each is meant to stimulate the senses of touch, sight, and smell.

On each tabletop is a tiny simulated mountain range rising out of the Corian material. The topography provides a gentle surface to run one’s hand over, an action that stimulates the sense of touch. This stimulation is an important part of Alzheimer’s and dementia care as it keeps the brain working.

The tabletop “mountains” also act as a aromatherapy center. They dispense soothing aromas which engage the sense of smell and can provide comfort when a dementia patient is feeling agitated or restless.

Finally, the tables all provide gentle light therapy as well. An internal light shines softly through the translucent Corian, illuminating a relaxing mountain scene. The designer sees the pieces as moving with the patient from home to a care home if that should become necessary. The consistency of being surrounded with familiar furniture can help decrease a dementia patient’s agitation levels and make them feel more comfortable overall.

Here’s a description of the collection from the designer:

“Jardin d’Hiver is a collection of furniture for relaxation composed of two beside cabinets, a console and a credenza. Every piece is integrating aromatherapy and light therapy to alleviate sleep disturbances and anxiety, and engages the user’s sight, smell and tactile senses. The translucent and strength qualities of Corian® have been used to design the top section of the pieces. The design evokes an open window into a snow covered landscape, where the aromatherapy emanates from a sculpted mountain, and the light therapy diffuses behind a graphic scenery that invites the individual to envisage a faraway relaxing landscape.”

The post Therapy Tables Offer Tactile Relaxation first appeared on Dornob.

Bringing the eternal beauty of nature indoors is a trick that designers have used for centuries to add a certain depth to interior spaces. Italian designer Enzo Berti uses marble and wood to create a beachscape right in your living room.

The Pavé Stone collection, commissioned by and for Italian marble company Kreoo, consists of a heavy marble base under a comfortable wooden seat. Both layers look like huge, polished stones you would find on a beach.

The wood grain might seem like it would look out of place next to the polished marble. However, it nicely complements the stone’s own natural grain. The two stacked pieces flow together beautifully and bring to mind the fun of skipping rocks or collecting interesting bits of natural keepsakes along the beach or river.

Kreoo envisions offering the stacked stone chairs in three sizes, in several marble colors and with a choice of a bleached or aged larch wood seat. A table – made of a marble base with a small pedestal attached – is another option that would nicely round out the living room set.

“The seating system is realized through the overlap of two natural layers: a marble base and a wood seat in bleached or aged larch.
Pavè Stone (indoor) is a design of new comfort and various solutions.
Proposed in various marble colors and in 3 different sizes.”

“In 2010 thanks to the 50-year-long experience by Decormarmi, Kreoo creates an unexplored dimension of the marble item managing in exalting its sensual and secret soul. Marble is combined with wood, Murano glass, and metals. | Kreoo ventures in new thicknesses, waves and shapes | it experiments new materials | looks for new functionalities.”

“The name Kreoo has a precise reference to the Greek verb kraino meaning “to create, to realize”: from Ancient Greece, Kreoo draws the instinct for perfection and harmony and translate it into a contemporary, aesthetic and innovative vocabulary.”

The post Nature-Inspired Stone + Wood Seating first appeared on Dornob.

Book lovers, get ready to drool. The book shop inside the Conarte Library in Monterrey, Mexico is a stunning architectural tribute to the beauty of books. The reading area features rhomboid shelves made of pinewood; as they recede into the back of the room they twist and bend to create a mesmerizing optical illusion.

Design firm Anagrama designed the unique structure with the intention of creating an illusion of disconnection with the outside world. That contributes to a peaceful environment in which readers can just let go, forget about daily life, and melt into a great book.

Gentle overhead lighting and a lighted arch at the back of the bookshelf structure make the space feel almost like a cathedral. This is where you come to worship books and meditate on stories.

Built-in bench seats, intersected by a staircase, lead up to the back of the room. If you look carefully, you’ll notice a subtle gradient paint job going from a soft blue in the front to a gentle green at the back. The colors emphasize the overall feeling and sensation of being uplifted by this glorious tribute to the experience of reading.

The post Visually Stunning Library Wraps You Up in a Big Bookish Hug first appeared on Dornob.

When you were a little kid, did you ever wish you could actually climb into your awesome Lego creations? We sure did, and that all came rushing back when we saw EverBlocks. These life-size lego blocks fit together just like their toy counterparts, but they let you build actual, usable structures instead of just mini replicas.

The blocks come in full-size (one foot long), half-size (six inches long), quarter-size (three inches long), and finishing caps, all of which interlock. To put together a large, functional structure, you have to use a combination of Lego building methods and conventional construction principles.

Just like with LEGOs, to connect and build your structure up, each layer has to cover the seams of the layer below it. For added structural security, each block has a channel built into it to accommodate reinforcement rods. Connector clips and metal baseplates can add to the structures’ stability.

EverBlock has some intriguing ideas for potential uses for their giant blocks. On their site, they suggest that the system could be used to construct temporary modular buildings. The structures could be used as emergency shelter or temporary workspaces. When it’s time to move on, they can be taken apart and reused in some other place. There are no tools involved in building or un-building, so they can be reused over and over.

The blocks come in 14 sizes, including metallic gold and silver, which can be put together in endless combinations to create your very own customized lego furniture, room dividers, trade show booths, toys, and whatever else you can dream up. The company can even rent you blocks for special events or provide design and installation services. But we’re 100% sure it’ll be more fun to build those projects yourself. What would you build if you had your own set of life-size Lego bricks?

The post Big Kid Toys: Life-Size LEGO Building Blocks first appeared on Dornob.

The horrific tsunamis of 2004 and 2011 affected all of us in some way, but the majority of us not directly affected could do nothing about the disasters other than sit back and watch them unfold. Two engineers from Seattle were inspired to put their expertise to good use so that future disasters need not take such a dramatic human toll, designing a floating tsunami shelter that might just save your life.

Scott Hill and Julian Sharp have been working on their tsunami shelter design since 2011. The Survival Capsule is meant for children, the elderly, the disabled, and anyone else who would find evacuation difficult or impossible. The designers stress that evacuation is always the safest course of action.

Outside, the capsule is wrapped in aircraft-grade aluminum that can withstand impacts with objects traveling up to 75 MPH. Inside, a ceramic thermal blanket protects occupants from any exterior fires, while the aluminum casing prevents the pod from melting. The designers point out that the shelters could also be used in case of other natural disasters like floods, tornadoes, and earthquakes.

The Survival Capsules, available in two- to 10-person models, can be allowed to float freely or be tethered in place. In the event that the tether would cause the capsule to be trapped underwater, the tether can easily be released. If the capsule does somehow become submerged, on-board oxygen tanks would keep occupants supplied with air for up to one hour.

Storage space allows for a stash of enough water and supplies for up to five days, keeping occupants alive until they can be rescued. Of course, with a starting price of $10,000 for a two-person shelter, the capsules will be out of the price range of many of the people they could help the most. We hope to see government programs to fund the supply of high-tech tsunami disaster shelters like these to be used by the public in especially high-risk areas.

The post Save Yourself with this High-Tech Floating Tsunami Shelter first appeared on Dornob.

How great would it be to create exactly the chair that you want at exactly that moment? Instead of settling for the furniture that’s already there, you could design a seat that’s high off the ground for conversation or super-low for relaxing. The backrest could have a deep recline or you could add high arms. You’re limited only by the number of foam bars.

When you aren’t using the Sink In pieces as furniture, they camouflage well as unique sculptural pieces for your living space. You can create random designs or line the bars up so the pieces just look like big, soft blocks. Each piece is $700 USD with an additional $80 for shipping…which sounds about right for high-concept, made-to-order designer furniture.

From the designer:

“‘Sink in’ is an adjustable seating furniture that allows a variety of sitting positions to fit the user comfort in height and size.

The ‘sink in’ is built from two wooden frames filled with sponge units which can be moved back and forth, thereby creating various of different chairs models in various sizes and heights.

The furniture can be placed vertical or horizontal.

The frames are made of birch wood, 100/70 cm, inside 204 hard sponge units -70 cm length, width 5 cm.

When the furniture is unoccupied it is used as a decorative sculptural element in the space.

Suitable for adults, youth and children that want to relax and sink in.”

Homeless people who “sleep rough” – that is, who sleep unprotected outdoors – are often the victims of verbal abuse and outright violence. In cities with overcrowded shelters or few resources for the homeless, sleeping outdoors is sometimes the only option. London architect James Furzer wants to keep the city’s homeless population safer with a unique project he calls Homes for the Homeless.

The project can’t help stop people from becoming homeless; rather, it helps people out a bit when they find themselves in that position. Furzer’s idea is a group of small pods that attach to the sides of existing buildings to provide safety and shelter for those who would ordinarily have to sleep unprotected outdoors.

The pods are quite small on the inside and designed with no toilet facilities. They are meant to be built quickly from inexpensive materials and bolted on to existing buildings by way of simple steel frames. These aren’t permanent home solutions – they are supposed to provide temporary shelter from the elements and from people who would harass or harm the homeless.

Furzer acknowledges that there are plenty of challenges with a concept like this. The pods would have to be mounted high above sidewalk level – above the level of pedestrians’ heads, actually – to keep them from impeding the sidewalk. Access would be via ladders, and there would have to be a set of rules for using the pods, including limits on the time of day they can be utilized.

The architect’s hope is that, after he completes the design and engineering of the pods, charitable organizations will pay for and “adopt” one or more pods. Those organizations would then be responsible for maintaining and monitoring the pods in their area to ensure their proper usage. Of course it would be great to see several of these lined up on the side of a city building, but even one pod shared on a rotating basis could mean a temporary respite from the stresses of sleeping rough. Homes for the Homeless took first place in FAKRO’s “Space for new Visions” competition.

The post Pod People: Tiny, Building-Attached Shelters for the Homeless first appeared on Dornob.

Though not technically a treehouse since it’s built on supports rather than trunks, it sits high above the ground keeping the nearby trees company.

Created by Sharon Davis Design, the 350-square-foot treehouse has two levels: the main level and a crow’s nest. Entry to the structure is through a custom climbing net and a trap door; the second level is accessed via a ladder on the first floor leading up to a second trap door.

At the very top, in the crow’s nest, you’ll find a beautiful mahogany writing desk and an area open to the view toward the meadow and apple orchard. When you’re ready to leave the top level, a twisty stainless steel slide will deposit you back on the first level.

Just under the slide is another net that acts as a sweet lounge area. The view from this side of the treehouse is a wide vista of the Hudson River Valley. On the opposite end of the structure, a little balcony looks back toward the main house on the property.

When you’re done playing (or mom is yelling that it’s dinnertime), the treehouse’s exit is via two support poles that double as fireman’s poles to take you back down to the ground. The whole treehouse – as big as some apartments! – is made of steel and reclaimed white cedar siding.

“Entry to the structure is via a custom climbing net and a trap door. A ladder leads up through a second trap door to the crow’s nest above, which hosts a mahogany writing desk with views toward the meadow and apple orchard. A custom stainless steel slide arcs between the roof deck and main space, forming an elegant sculptural object beneath which visitors relax in a lounging net.”

The post Awesome 2-Level Kids’ Treehouse first appeared on Dornob.

Toilet paper is one of those things that we tend to work hard to keep out of sight. There are entire storage systems built for the sole purpose of hiding your stash of toilet paper. French designers Bertrand Jayr and Lyon Béton take the opposite approach with their Cloud toilet paper holders.

The holders are sculptural grey (or silver if you’re particularly optimistic) wall-hanging shapes that resemble the outline of a cloud. Their hanging hardware is concealed so there’s nothing to distract from the graceful, simple lines. A small version and a large version are available to fit your bathroom.

You pile your toilet paper on top of the wall holders to complete the cloud theme. The fluffy white rolls are the perfect shape to form indoor clouds on your bathroom wall. You can stack them high to ensure you’ll always have a supply at hand or use the Cloud as more of a whimsical sculpture with just a few rolls. Either way, it’s probably the first time we’ve thought of a toilet paper holder as “beautiful.”

Want one of your own? You can purchase the Cloud toilet paper holder at Lyon Betón’s website for $130 USD. From the product description there:

“Because small spaces deserve a little levity, too. Bertrand Jayr designed a smaller version of his hit toilet paper shelf, specially adapted for narrower washrooms. Don’t hide your toilet paper anymore. Turn it into a work of art!”

About designer Bertrand Jayr:

“According to Bertrand Jayr, there is a transversality linking these disciplines, which are both distinct and related. It is precisely through the transgression of its own limits that Art is constantly redefining itself. This is how this young artist and designer from Lyon considers these two practices simultaneously. An innovative and meaningful design, reconciling creativity and use.”

“Graduated from the School of Applied Art of the city of Lyon in 2004, between BTS and Fine Arts, he spent 4 years training in Interior Architecture and Design which will allow him subsequently to sharpen this transversal artistic vision. Bertrand Jayr enjoys making objects talk. Strongly permeated by Conceptual Art, it is often the intention that dictates its approach.”

The post Cloud Toilet Paper Holder first appeared on Dornob.

There’s basically nothing better in the world than climbing a tree and watching the world go by from way up in the branches. But when you get to a certain age – say, past 16 or so – climbing trees tends to get a bit more difficult. Designers Robert McIntyre and Thor ter Kulve developed a system that takes the work out of tree climbing and leaves you with just the fun, whimsical part.

CanopyStair is a little like a ladder that you might find leading up to a treehouse – but in this case, the goal at the top isn’t a super-secret hideout. It’s just the opportunity to sit among the leaves and watch life go by below.

The modular, removable system is harmless to the tree and requires no tools to install. Woven ratcheting strips wrap around the tree’s trunk to hold each step in place. Thick pads protect the tree’s bark and keep the stairs themselves from cutting into it. A thin wooden pole connects each stair to a handrail to drastically cut down on the danger factor.

CanopyStair can be installed with no special skills or tools. Installation times differ depending on tree girth and height, but a 20-foot set can be installed in around three hours by two people.

“CanopyStair was conceived last year when designers Robert McIntyre and Thor ter Kulve spent time in the Azores. Though the house where they were staying was near the seashore, a tall stone wall that surrounded the house cut off any view of it. Only by climbing a tree in the garden could they watch the sun setting across the ocean, and so they began to discuss ways of transforming a garden tree into a staircase, thus allowing them to walk and up and down easily and enjoy the view.”

“During the course of their final year at the RCA studying on the Design Products postgraduate programme, ter Kulve and McIntyre developed their concept, and began to experiment with various prototypes. Testing out CanopyStair they realised that what they had created was something rather special, much more than just a means to a view. They felt that they had unlocked a gate to a secret garden and made a passageway to a secluded habitat. Forest canopy is the least explored ecosystem on earth, a cloud of life that they could now access unobtrusively. And there was something deeply nostalgic about the experience of ascending the stairs – tapping into childhood memories of exploring, climbing, trespassing, of tree houses and summer days.”

The post Removable Stairs Reach the Treetops first appeared on Dornob.

Remember a very, very recent time when standing desks were all the rage and doctors were telling us that sitting down to work was as bad for our health as smoking? Well, that’s actually still true, but now you can quit pretending to be ok with standing up all day at work because the LeanChair is about to switch things up a little.

The LeanChair is technically a standing desk, but the difference is that, as you might have guessed, you get to lean back a little while you work. It looks like a tall chair without the seat, with a standing platform at the bottom and a work surface that swings out of the way when you’re stepping onto and off of the platform.

Leaning is a natural physiological response to standing for a prolonged period. The reclining position takes pressure off of your spine and weight off of your legs, making you feel way more comfortable without giving in to the urge to sit. LeanChair’s inventor, Wayne Yeager, says that the leaning desk takes about 25% of your body weight off of your feet. Your body will thank you for that little kindness.

You can use LeanChair with your existing standing desk or just use the removable work surface that comes with it. Either way, you get your butt out of a chair and you don’t have to deal with the physical and mental torture of standing for an entire workday. The project is on Kickstarter and has completely demolished its modest goal of $25,000. A standard pledge of $295 – about a quarter of the cost of a fancy standing desk – gets you a complete LeanChair.

The post Leaning is the New Standing: Clever Chair Takes the Pressure Off first appeared on Dornob.

Your bathroom faucet seemed fine all these years, but it’s about to feel dreadfully boring. American Standard has unveiled three new faucet designs that look absolutely impossible. They were made using 3D printing, a technique that allows for a great deal of freedom that can’t be matched by traditional manufacturing.

The basic physics of water faucets tell us that the water needs to travel freely through a tube in order to come out of the tap. With traditional manufacturing, that means a straight tube curved down at the end because, well, that’s what works. But the American Standard faucets have crazy criss-crosses, graceful loops, and one absolutely bonkers waterfall.

3D printed faucets aren’t completely new; companies have been using the technique to make prototypes for years. There have even been some plastic 3D printed faucets sold to consumers. But the faucets in this line are the first high-quality, working, ready-for-market products.

Style like this doesn’t come cheap, we’re afraid. To score one of these marvellous pieces of hardware you’ll need patience and many thousands of dollars. The printing process itself takes 24 hours per piece, and then there’s the careful buffing and polishing. All of this fanciness will add up to a price tag of $12,000-$20,000 when the faucets hit the market in 2016.

The post 3 Incredible 3D Printed Faucets That Will Blow Your Mind first appeared on Dornob.

Maybe you’re a coffee drinker and you live with one or more other coffee drinkers. Maybe no one can decide whether drip, air press, or cold brew coffee is king. Maybe you’ve got gadgets to make all of those kinds sitting out on your kitchen counter because, let’s face it, you’re never going to change someone’s favorite coffee-making method.

Australian engineer Mark Folker has stepped in to save the day and free up some counter space by inventing a coffee brewer that covers all three options. His invention, the Trinity ONE, can handle pour-over brewing, air press brewing, and even cold brew without the need to fiddle with too much equipment.

The Trinity ONE is a sculptural kind of assembly that is meant to be out on display. It looks a bit like a mad chemist’s setup with its glass beaker suspended from a stainless steel and walnut timber frame. You’ll find no flimsy plastic parts or fiddly knobs and buttons here; all of the pieces are pretty straightforward.

To make pour-over coffee, you set a filter into the beaker’s conical opening, fill it with coffee, put a carafe underneath it all, and pour hot water over the coffee grounds. The air press method has you pour in the coffee and the water, then drop in the weighted press to move the water through the coffee and into the carafe. Thanks to the weighted press, you don’t have to worry about slowly and carefully pressing down on a lever with your hand.

Cold brew coffee is made by turning off the “flow control” and then pouring in the coffee and water. You can then let the coffee steep for as long as you like – most cold brew enthusiasts prefer a 12-hour brew. The project raised more than its goal on Kickstarter; Folker says that when the product is ready for mass production, it should sell at a price of $400 AUD, or just over $300 USD.

The post Innovative Trinity One Coffee Maker first appeared on Dornob.

The words “healthy lifestyle” are so very rarely used in connection with “McDonald’s” that putting them together sounds like kind of a joke. But in keeping with a worldwide trend of increasingly healthy lifestyles, McDonald’s new takeout containers that hang securely on your bike’s handlebars.

The fast food giant worked with Argentinian ad agency Tribal Buenos Aires to create the unique packaging. The folding cardboard container has compartments to keep the sandwich and fries separate along with a hole in the bottom to carry a drink. Everything is held securely so it doesn’t get too banged up during the ride. You’re out of luck if you want to order a salad.

The recyclable container has a cutout at the top that slips easily onto your handlebars. It’s light and compact enough that it won’t add much weight to your ride, and it won’t get in your way while you’re pedaling. McDonald’s rolled out the packaging in Copenhagen, Denmark and Medellin, Colombia. They plan to introduce it in Amsterdam and Tokyo – all four cities are known for their high concentration of cyclists.

More from Phaidon:

“Made of recyclable card, the container opens flat to reveal two compartments for solid food, with the cup of drink lodged securely in a circular hole in the base of the box. Integrated into the top of the box, which is a sea-green colour and carries the McBike logo in orange, is a convenient hook. With the number of big city cyclists hugely on the up, we can’t believe somebody hasn’t done this before. All in all, it’s a great way of ensuring that tonight’s ‘supper’ is not your last.”

Home or office objects that do double duty are always a hit with us, but the BE READY collection from Swiss design duo SUPERLIFE is on a whole new level of cool. Each of the objects in the four-item collection has a double life that may just save your life in an emergency situation.

Blackout starts off as a stylish floor lamp – if you look closely enough you’ll notice that the top of the lamp looks just a little different than similar lamps. That’s because the top comes off to be used as a flashlight if the electricity should ever cut out.

The lamp is plugged in and charging the internal battery under normal circumstances, so when you pull it off of the base you don’t have to scramble to find conventional batteries to put in it.

If you’re ever in a natural disaster situation and need to find your way to safety, all you have to do is remove the flashlight from the base, turn the light on with a push of a button, and easily illuminate your path.

In normal conditions, Meduse is a quirky little round rug. You’ll notice there’s a thin strip of material off to one side; that’s for inflating it in the event of a flood.

The rug actually becomes a makeshift floatation device. It won’t keep you as safe or hold you for as long as, say, a boat – but it will hopefully help you keep your head above water until help arrives.

Poumon looks like a regular desktop pen/pencil cup in a fun curvy shape. It could sit unnoticed on your desk – that is, until you need it.

The Poumon contains a filter to help you breathe in a fire or when a lot of stifling dust is present, such as in a partial building collapse.

Alive is the only product that doesn’t really serve a regular daily purpose; instead, it serves two disaster-related purposes. It sticks to the underside of a desk or table, discrete and out of sight until you need it.

If you are trapped in your building, a whistle detaches from the main body so you can audibly lead rescuers to your location.

The base also sports a small glowing light that can help rescuers see your position in the dark as well, making their jobs easier and getting you rescued as soon as possible. Of course, no one ever wants to use products like these, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

The post Don’t Panic! 4 Objects With Disaster-Ready Functions first appeared on Dornob.
