“Every year, huge amounts of isothermal refrigerated semi-trailers withdrawn from the market are imported to our country,” says architecture firm Znamy Sie. “Poland is thus becoming a cemetery for these disused trucks. Our project, prepared in cooperation with Good Spot, involves upcycling, i.e. increasing the value of the material and changing the purpose of cold storage to hotel rooms. By renovating the trailer, we give it a second life!”

The founders of Good Spot hired Znamy Sie to realize their vision. “The idea was born during a kitesurfing trip to Hel, where the key is to follow a good wind,” they explain. “What if the hotel room could move around? What if it could stay in places offering the best conditions and closeness to nature?” Thus, the first mobile hotel chain in Poland was born.

Each portable camper unit began as an abandoned, rusted-out trailer in need of some love. And while shipping containers have thin steel walls, requiring a lot of modification to be comfortable in hot and cold weather, these trailers already had well insulated shells. The architects were able to preserve a surprising amount of finished interior space (about 100 square feet) after cladding the interior walls and adding custom-built wood furniture, including storage, benches, kitchen counters, and a bed platform.

Spacious windows in the living and sleeping areas let in lots of natural light, which bounces off the bright white walls and makes the interiors feel larger than they are. The units offer not just one, but two sleeping areas, one at either end of the trailer. At the center of each one is a bathroom painted bright blue offering a toilet and a large rain shower. A metal gangway leads up to the entrance and doubles as a terrace outside. And of course, the exterior is wrapped in stainless steel sheeting to give it the feel of a more angular classic Airstream trailer.

Currently, only one unit is fully complete, but you can reserve it now on the Good Spot website. Three additional units are currently under construction and expected to be made available soon. Each unit will have a slightly different design and can be moved around Poland to tourist areas that don’t typically have comfortable accommodations. The design aims to “blend with nature without disturbing the landscape – it does not overwhelm with its form and does not compete with the surroundings.”

Good Spot founders Przemysław Kwiatkowski, Paweł Kołtunowicz, and Roman Sokołowski, who run the Hotel Service 24 company, came up with the idea before the coronavirus pandemic, but now say mobile lodging is the way to go in any circumstances. Ideal for vacations, the Good Spot trailers could also be rented by people who work remotely so they can enjoy quiet surroundings in nature and even host small meetings.

The team explains that they “change the former cold stores into three-star hotel rooms. We renovate the entire trailer with a running gear. We renew its technical elements, strengthen the entire structure, and arm its chassis. Thanks to this, each room is reborn and can travel thousands of kilometers on the road. By combining the comfort of hotels with mobility, we shorten the distance to nature as much as possible.”

Since Rodgers won JoJo’s heart over the course of eight crazy weeks in a competition with around 30 other bachelors, the couple remains happily committed to both each other and a new venture as the hosts of a property flipping show called Cash Pad on CNBC. But unlike typical home flips, Rodgers and Fletcher focus on small and unusual spaces like trailers and warehouses in an effort to help their owners prepare them for use as AirBnb rentals.

“Over the past year, we really started to think about this new trend of Airbnbs and short-term rentals,” Rodgers explains. “Every time we traveled, we enjoyed staying in them, and we saw a niche market we wanted to capture.”

One of the pair’s most recent projects was a rusty cargo trailer in an Austin, Texas backyard. Setting out with nothing but a plan and a TV crew, the couple quickly took the shipping container from trashy to treasure. And since there are already so many shipping container options on AirBnb, they knew they had to to find ways for their project to stand out against the competition.

For starters, they managed to figure out how to comfortably sleep four people inside it, with the bedroom offering a queen bed and a pull-out sofa sleeping two additional guests. To further combat the confining feeling, JoJo and Jordan also ensured that every window in the shipping container could act like a door and open completely, peeling away the side of the rental for easy access to the outdoors. Once outside, a wooden deck provides room for additional seating, an outdoor dining or grilling space, and a relaxing pad for stargazing. As with most tiny home experiences, the outdoor space is almost as important as the lodging itself here, so the pair took it upon themselves to throw in a second entertaining space complete with a fire pit and life-sized versions of games like Jenga and Connect Four.

The AirBnb was recently listed as a rental option after its corresponding episode aired on Cash Pad. Anyone interested in more information about how the space was converted from cold to cozy should definitely tune in and follow the drama as it unfolds.

Fletcher and Rodgers are assuming all the risk (i.e. paying for the renovations and providing the owners a standard monthly rate) of several AirBnb conversions for the sake of the show, with the belief that it’s a profitable endeavor and a good way to help homeowners complete their passion projects and fulfill their dreams of hosting a proper rental space. In exchange, the couple receives any additional rental income over the first four years the AirBnb is up and running.

Now that filming is wrapped up, Fletcher and Rodgers will be spending their time on their own housing and wedding dreams. The couple recently announced on Instagram that they bought their first non-flip house together, and that a wedding date isn’t set yet, but will likely be next spring or summer.

It says something about a design (particularly for a fast-paced mobile house) when someone can look at it three decades later and still marvel at the simple, efficient and effective use of materials and space.

Created by Dutch designer  Eduard Bohtlingk, the name of this classic award-winner means ‘The Awning’ – a fitting description of the fold-down mechanism at the heart of its ingenuity.

On the road, it folds up to look like any other camper, but once on site, it deploys to have a footprint three times the size of the main volume, simply by having the walls turn into floors on either side.

Add a few pieces of furniture to these auxiliary spaces and they become functional overflow for living and sleeping, while the core functions remain housed in the central area. When stored up for the season, it’s incredibly compact – especially compared to standard trailers and recreational vehicles.

How B-Turtle Works

Fully inflating in a matter of minutes, the camper can also be taken down and packed away in less than 10! Comprised of an inflatable tent situated on top of a metallic frame, the B-Turtle also has an integrated tray in its trailer section capable of storing up to 120 liters — something that will surely help lug all your camping essentials around. In “turtle” mode, the B-Turtle acts as an ordinary cargo trailer with a width of 79 centimeters, allowing for easy traveling on most paths. In “camping” mode, it offers enough sleeping space for two and a spacious vestibule at the front, which itself can be used as an awning area or entrance. The camper has also been equipped with a fully retractable door.

Once the tent has been pitched, the B-Turtle measures 83 X 51 inches, with a two-person air-filled sleeping platform that stands 28 inches above your chosen terrain. The trailer and tent can then be fixed using the guy-lines, supporting legs, and tent pegs. The tent is also equipped with a rear wall window, two side window openings, and mosquito nets. The support platform that unfolds and rests on top of the trailer measures 130 x 210 centimeters in size and promises a sturdy foundation.

Once deflated and packed away, the tent attaches to the bike using a drawbar with Weber coupling. The trailer has two 12-inch spoked wheels with slight inclination in order to run and grip the roads better.

The B-Turtle is available for purchase from GentleTent for €2,990 (approx. $3,500 USD). This includes the trailer, the inflatable tent, the guy-lines, the stakes, a repair kit, and a hand pump. In the near future, the company hopes to give customers the chance to rent a B-Turtle for weekend trips and short holidays.

Cutting a dramatic silhouette with its angled ends and corrugated black metal exterior, Drake is a 357-square-foot trailer capable of sleeping up to six people, complete with two lofts and a “flex room” that converts from a living area to a bedroom. The trailer measures 30 feet in length, eight and a half feet in width, and 13.4 feet in height. At 13,000 pounds, its weight is actually in the same ballpark as those of similar-sized commercial RVs. But instead of plastic paneling and flimsy surfaces inside, you’ll find the kind of solid wood finishes you’d expect to see in a cabin. Blurring the line between RVs and tiny houses, Drake aims to provide all the comforts of home in a portable package.

It boasts a full-size entry door, 14 double-paned windows, highly efficient insulation, and a roof strong enough to withstand snow loads of ski resort caliber. Ten-foot-high ceilings give it a spacious feel, and all of its built-in furniture — including a sofa covered in custom Sunbrella cushions, hidden storage drawers, a double-duty work/eat bar, and plenty of shelving — saves precious floor area. The master loft can fit a king-sized mattress, while the secondary loft accommodates a queen. Closets, dimmable LED lighting, custom cellular blinds, standard electrical outlets, a washer/dryer combo, and full-sized modern kitchen and bathroom furnishings make it as comfortable as any hotel room. The Drake can be placed anywhere you can put a traditional RV, and it has all the standard inlets and outlets required for use at an RV park.

Self-described “guinea pigs” Brian and Joni Buzarde knew just what would make Drake livable for long periods on the road, mostly because they’ve been living in an earlier model they built themselves since 2012. They designed, constructed, and tested their own handmade RV (which they named “Woody”) in exchange for the freedom to follow jobs from Austin, Texas to Aspen, Colorado while living in all sorts of beautiful locales along the way. When certain small things didn’t work out (think storage ideas and plumbing setups), they learned from the experiences and refined their designs. Drake is the result of all that trial and error.

Land Ark currently has one Drake model in stock and ready to ship at $139,000, and future orders will have a three-to-four-month lead time. That may be more than the $15,000-$50,000 average for a new fifth wheel RV measuring the same length, but for some discerning buyers, beautiful design makes the trade-off worthwhile. Anyone who wants to take a tour of the completed model should stop by Compass Mountain in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, a former RV park in the process of converting to a 42-unit tiny home community.

Kim Lewis is an acclaimed Texas-based designer who famously worked on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” before beginning her own “Tiny Homes” project in early 2017. Now, Kim Lewis is partnering with Cavco Industries, Inc. to bring people some irresistible mini-living spaces at an affordable price. The first of these collaborative creations was unveiled at this year’s Dwell on Design conference in downtown Los Angeles.

Lewis has worked on over 120 housing projects across 43 states and has long been a regular face on TV channels like TLC, National Geographic, Animal Planet, and FYI. Lewis has also been featured in several iconic magazines, including InStyle, Austin Woman, and People. This year, Dwell on Design invited her to showcase her innovative “Joshua Tree” tiny home at their convention.

On working with Lewis, Cavco President Tim Gage had this to say: “Working with Kim and her team for Dwell on Design has pushed us outside of even our very creative design box and encouraged us to take risks with truly special designs and ideas, but this is exactly the kind of thing that keeps Cavco as an industry leader.”

The Joshua Tree

At 560 square feet, the Joshua Tree is larger than the average tiny home and consists of two ground floor trailers connected by a long front porch. A bedroom occupies one of the trailers, and the other one contains both the kitchen and living areas. Intended for space, light, and open-plan loving bohemians, the Joshua Tree’s design was inspired by the desert and its residents — the people who crave a connection with nature and live surrounded by valleys and mountains of sand under sunset skies.

Kim wanted the Joshua Tree to function like any ordinary brick-and-mortar house, so she gave it a proper bedroom instead of equipping it with the space-saving sleeping lofts you see in countless other tiny home designs. The trailers are each nine feet six inches high and have enough windows and sliding glass doors to make their indoor spaces feel as if they were out in the open.

Features of the Joshua Tree Tiny Home

Keeping things clean and modern, the dwelling boasts white walls, copper piping, a freestanding Kohler claw foot tub, retro appliances, Silestone countertops, Barn Light Electric lighting fixtures, and a mint green Big Chill refrigerator. Lewis used the desert’s sunset hues to create a color scheme that would capture some of the surrounding landscape’s natural magic.

Why Should I Consider a Tiny Home?

If you’re money-conscience, want to immerse yourself in the outdoors, crave a freer lifestyle, or simply desire the luxuries of a home but the ease of minimalistic living, then a tiny home is for you. They are the affordable future for our thrill-seeking millennial generation, who are constantly in pursuit of the next big adventure and don’t like to be tied down by contracts and mortgages. You don’t even have to use the Joshua Tree as a permanent residence, either. They also make great holiday homes, offices, and weekend getaways!

Lewis notes: “Baby boomers want to downsize, but they still want a home that feels luxurious, happy, and unique…the younger generation is more adventurous. More and more people are working for themselves, so having a tiny home gives them more flexibility and financial freedom.”

The Joshua Tree will initially be sold for $60,000, lower than the average asking price for small dwellings. The tiny home’s modest price reflects Lewis’ philanthropic vision of encouraging others to live with less and experience more.

Conceived of by the international advertising company Anomaly in collaboration with Fabian Mazzola of Bitlens Studio, this project, which was surprisingly not commissioned by MINI, takes the British automaker’s signature style and adapts it to create an unusual trailer with Airstream-like proportions and a 21st century aesthetic. Inside the pod, you won’t find any of the faux wood or plastic interiors you’d expect to see in traditional RVs. Instead, you’ll be greeted by a spacious living environment and a set of modern amenities that were designed make your travels as luxurious as possible. Mazzola says, “This idea came up as I wanted to create an idea, an illusion of a futuristic pod that came with all the accommodations a home has.”

For starters, the MINI-inspired camping pod features panoramic windows that open its interior up to picturesque views of the surrounding landscapes. For added privacy and protection from the sun, the windows have all been tinted, but you’ll be happy to hear that they still let plenty of daylight in. These glass panes even stretch up over the pod’s cozy full-sized bed for some breathtaking views of the sky. A second skylight rests above the camper’s minimalist kitchen area.

The interior has been designed to mimic a hotel suite, boasting wooden floors and sleek lighting fixtures. Since you can use the pod’s extra space however you like, you’ll easily be able to throw some additional chairs and accessories into the mix, too. What other camper comes with its own full-sized bathroom? This modern back room features a tub that’s big enough to stretch out in and, in keeping with the rest of the pod, a sizable window that allows you to look out at the ocean, forest, or any other preferred climate while enjoying a comfortable bath. Not bad at all. While rugged campers who prefer the gritty feel of the outdoors might turn their noses up at this kind of luxury, the pod is perfect for any travelers who are accustomed to staying in high-end hotels but want to spend some time in a more natural setting.

Of course, no design comes without a few flaws. For instance, it’s not clear whether the mobile home would provide an option for covering those big windows up at night, something most people would find pretty crucial to their personal comfort. The kitchen could stand to be a little more functional, too, and more accessible storage space is always convenient when packing for a road trip. Of course, this is still more of a speculative concept than a concrete design, and there’s no reason those details couldn’t be amended later on.

If it were ever manufactured, this MINI-inspired camping pod would undoubtedly come at a hefty cost and be out of a lot of would-be adventurers’ budgets. Still, if there’s one great thing that can come from renderings like these, it’s their potential to inspire companies to think outside the box, take risks, and begin incorporating some of these luxurious features into their own vehicles.

It’s true that tiny houses can sometimes feel confining, a fact that’s magnified when they’re set in places that get sweltering hot during the summer. Air circulation, insulation and clever floor plans and storage solutions are the key to making a small space work in a state like Texas, where temperatures often reach well over 100 degrees during the day. One interior designer has found a way to not only configure a comfortable space using unconventional materials, but also decorate it with a refreshing blend of mid-century modern and bohemian styles, adding pops of color and unexpected accents throughout the home.

Kim Lewis of the firm VAGABOND calls this 380-square-foot dwelling in Austin ‘mid-century meets Marfa style,’ which infuses the micro home before you even step through the door. A set of colorfully painted wooden steps lead up to an elevated wraparound deck, which hugs the base of two gooseneck trailers. The trailers are positioned at a 90-degree angle to each other with a breezeway in between, promoting air circulation and creating a network of indoor/outdoor spaces that encourage connection to the outdoors.

The space between the trailers is covered with a roof and equipped with a ceiling fan as an ideal place to cool off and enjoy the fresh air. A built-in bench offers seating for humans, with cut-outs beneath creating shaded spaces for their furry friends to relax. The same patterned trellis that disguises the bases of the trailers outside continues throughout the interior in the form of door screens on this little porch and between the bedroom and bathroom.

Inside, basic black and white surfaces provide a neutral modern backdrop for the inhabitants’ colorful belongings, including Guatemalan textiles. Pipe fittings utilized as handles and supports for steps and shelves add an industrial touch. Whereas the elevated area above the trailer hitch would normally house a bed, the double-trailer layout enables them to use it for storage instead, creating a spacious and conveniently located closet and laundry area. A pass-through bar and hammocks lure the owners and their guests back out onto the deck.

The designer, who is known for her work on the television series Extreme Makeover, notes that materials were carefully chosen to keep the trailers mobile in case the couple wants to pick up and move their home somewhere else. Granite and heavy hardwoods were nixed in favor of Silestone countertops and lighter woods. Two low-profile refrigerator drawers fit beneath the kitchen counter to hold just as much as a traditional refrigerator without taking up too much space. The overall effect is a fun twist on the tiny house trend.

“I definitely see it as a reflection of the housing industry – the desire to better find a way to live within your means,” Lewis told Lonny Magazine. “It also represents a free-spirited philosophy; many young couples want or need the flexibility to travel or to live in multiple destinations. This style of living allows for that.”

This tiny Texas house definitely makes living in an ultra-small space seem more possible, especially with those extra comfy features. Would you live there?

An ordinary compact camping trailer hides a transforming interior that can adapt from a mobile workspace to a relaxing place to take a nap within minutes. Dubbed #dojowheels, this little studio by Belgium-based design firm FIVE AM feels larger than it is inside thanks to a clever space-saving trick.

The circular table pops up from the floor, revealing access to a storage space that keeps the interior from feeling cluttered. But even cooler than that is the fact that while you’re sitting at the table, you can dangle your legs inside. Not only does that make it more comfortable to sit, it also makes the ceiling seem far higher than it really is.

The camper is “a mobile training facility or dojo, which is a perfect reflection of our vision on working together,” say the designers. “It can easily change its setup to offer the user the most practical surrounding. The flat surface acts as a bed, couch and table with storage available underneath.”

The peg board wall also makes it easy to hang various working implements as well as little cubbies for your magazines, gadget chargers and other small items. Since the trailer is so small, it’s easy to tow around, enabling the owners to switch up their view to whatever inspires them the most day by day.
