But now all that may be a thing of the past with an incredible invention straight from one of the most ubiquitous pop culture gems of all time: The Office. Undoubtedly superfans will recall Dunder Mifflin exec David Wallace’s idea for an unfortunately named vacuum dubbed the Suck It designed to help kids clean up their toys. Later sold to the U.S. military, the fictional Suck It was a Shop-Vac-like machine and basically a souped-up vacuum. Like so many other inventions, it was a slightly tweaked version of an already existing device.

Fast forward to today, and enter Matty Bendetto, host of the YouTube channel Unnecessary Inventions. He’s also an already accomplished inventor with a resumé that includes “LEGO socks” meant to prevent wearers from mashing up their feet when stepping on the hard little blocks. Now, Bendetto says he was “inspired” to create a new LEGO invention from watching the aforementioned episode of The Office. Of course, Bendetto doesn’t want users to simply Suck It, but to Organize It, too.

The “It” in this case is, as you may have guessed, lost LEGO bricks. According to a recent AV Club article, Bendetto created his LEGO vac by “designing and 3D printing four canister inserts” that take simple suction one step further by adeptly organizing the errant pieces by shape — the next-gen souped up Suck It.

The canisters are conveniently transparent in this uber-modified Shop-Vac, allowing users the visual thrill of watching their truant pieces being separated before their very eyes. The secret here is Bendetto’s addition of increased air flow to allow pieces to be sucked up more easily in a virtual clog-free zone. Before you know it, you now have yourself a neatly organized quartet of LEGO canisters at the ready, no muss, no fuss.

Bendetto also provides a cool video to demonstrate his latest invention. Described as “unexpectedly hypnotic,” it’s easy to see why LEGO fans would be wooed by such a device — the latest addition in the charismatic Youtuber’s list of “unnecessary inventions.”

The Danish toy powerhouse has continually upped the creative ante over the last couple of decades, with intricate play sets that have been everywhere from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to Star Wars’ galaxy far, far away. And while the sets all range in piece number, themes, and most importantly, price, there are plenty of opportunities for kids of all ages to find something LEGO that interests them, and then spend hours (or more) putting the little bricks together to form something truly amazing.

The toy industry is packed with collectibles that rise and fall and sometimes rise again in value over time (think the Beanie Baby craze of the 1990s, and their more recent return to popularity), and other more evergreen toys that never go out of style (think Barbies still in the box) – but LEGO has been a brand that has been conspicuously late to the party when it comes putting a price tag on their products’ potential collectible value.

But all that’s about to change, as a recent study by Russian researchers at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow discovered that prices for retired LEGO sets grew 11 percent annually between the years 1987 and 2015. Most surprisingly, this rate is even higher than that of other, more traditional investments such as stocks, bonds, and even gold. The takeaway? Purchasing LEGO sets is a long-term investment that is virtually unhampered by other dictates that rule the stock market, and thus are very likely to yield returns over time — especially years after the sets themselves are discontinued.

But what makes the sets so valuable, and which sets are most likely to increase in value? The study’s authors, Victoria Dobrynskaya and Julia Kishilova, offered two important reasons as to why the popular toy brand is making a splash in the market: quality and quantity.

Like other toy collectibles that see increases in value over time, LEGO sets are produced in relatively small quantities (in addition to even more limited runs of special edition sets). And with a virtually non-existent secondary market due to owners being unwilling to sell, or unable to sell because of lost parts, complete sets end up becoming even rarer, especially when they’re discontinued.

The durability and overall quality of LEGO also plays an intrinsic role in the sets’ value. They’re sturdy, well made, and have the capacity to create endless 3D iterations. The sky’s literally the limit when it comes to what can be created with just a little time and imagination (check out this Batcave and Wayne Manor created by @lego_leprechaun if you don’t believe us!).

Obviously, the sets that will likely increase over time are ones that are discontinued, but there’s also evidence that both small and large sets are rarer and appeal more to adults — making them even more valuable. Additionally, sets tied to famous places, holidays, and blockbuster movies also seem to see a higher growth value than your run-of-the-mill, more generic sets. Currently, some of the most valuable sets include the Taj Majal and the Millennium Falcon.

Thanks to their quality, quantity, nostalgic value, and endless potential, we may be looking to a future where those LEGO bricks could be like actual gold bricks in your bank account, as the recent study indicates that they’ll only continue to increase in value over time. Either way, we definitely won’t be getting rid of our Millennium Falcon anytime in the near future. Value aside, it’s just too cool to let go!

The Room Copenhagen x LEGO HOME collection is a series of desk drawers, book racks, picture frames, and wall hangers that translates the plastic primary-colored bricks into polished wooden accents. The reference is unmistakable. Each item even bears the round knobs and holes on top and bottom so they can be stacked like life-size versions of real LEGO bricks. The desk drawers are probably the most versatile items in the collection. They come in two sizes: 2X2, which measures about six by six inches, and 2X4, which measures 12 inches wide by six inches deep. The collection is crafted with sustainably sourced red oak for a chic minimalist look that blends in with most interior decor schemes. That might seem like a new development, but it’s actually a nod to the early history of the toy brand. The very first LEGOs were made of wood, with the transition to plastic coming in 1960. This collection marks the first time the brand has worked with wood since then.

All of the storage solutions in the Room Copenhagen x LEGO HOME collection were also built to scale, so they’re the same size in relation to humans as the toy bricks are in relation to LEGO mini-figurines. This is one LEGO set you never have to worry about accidentally stepping on.

This isn’t Room Copenhagen’s first time reimagining ways to interact with LEGO in the home. But that collection is geared towards kids, more closely resembling the original toys, whereas the new HOME collection is a little more grown-up.

Architecture firm Archimatika threw convention out the window with Comfort Town Housing, a low-budget residential development in Kyiv, Ukraine. The project’s vivid rainbow of shades dominated by punchy yellows and oranges enlivens an area of town encompassing several city blocks, almost creating a city-within-a-city with its own unique look and feel. It’s divided into two zones: one with streets that allow for motor vehicle traffic, and one with pedestrian-only courtyards, which feature playgrounds, benches, and walkways.

In some areas, the rooflines of the buildings connect in zig-zagging patterns, while other buildings take on elongated gabled shapes with flat facades. Between the colors and the shapes, the development almost looks like a LEGO city from above, adding to the fun (or the weirdness, depending on your perspective). The architects wanted to create three distinct silhouettes with different turns and heights of dual-pitch roofs for an overall effect that’s varied and interesting.

On some facades, they’ve used French balconies to add decorative flair and function. These are the railings attached to the facade that enable double doors to be opened inside rather than spaces you step out onto. Shifting the patterns of the windows also keeps the buildings from looking monotonous.

“The Comfort Town residential complex includes the Academy of Modern Education with a 160-seat kindergarten, a 140-seat elementary school, and a 600-seat high school,” says Archimatika. “The residential complex also includes a 4500-square-meter retail complex with a supermarket, a 4600-square-meter fitness complex with three swimming pools and gyms, a 1.5-hectare complex of outdoor sports grounds, cafés, stores, and offices on the lower floors of the apartment buildings, 22 children playgrounds, and its own maintenance service.”

The firm adds that “a different number of stories of adjacent buildings (ranging from two to 16 floors) forms a picturesque image of every street. There is also a restored park with perennial trees, sculptures, and a fountain. Thus, the former industrial territory has turned into a good living environment and the status of the district as a whole has increased.”

Though unusual for Kyiv, the development isn’t too out of place, and it feels like a vibrant and comfortable place to live, hence the name. All the pains the architects took to give Comfort Town its cheerful, fun, and artsy atmosphere certainly pay off, especially when you compare it to the depressing uniformity of similarly-sized housing projects in Eastern Europe and other parts of the world.

This set marks the first time in the iconic toy brand’s history that it’s releasing an official LGBTQIA+ set. LEGO’s Vice President of Design Matthew Ashton talked about the inspiration behind the project, explaining that he “wanted to create a model that symbolizes inclusivity and celebrates everyone, no matter how they identify or who they love…this model shows that we care, and that we truly believe ‘Everyone is awesome!’”

The colorful LEGO set is inspired by the Pride flag first created over 40 years ago by Gilbert Baker to symbolize a movement that lacked representation of its own. Since then, it has come to be an important symbol to show pride and support for the LGBTQIA+ community. Each color of the flag has its own meaning and symbolizes diversity within the community itself.

Included in the “Everyone is Awesome” set are Baker’s original flag colors, in addition to the transgender colors of baby blue, pink, and white. Also included are the black and brown stripes that were added to the flag in Philadelphia in 2017 as part of the More Color More Pride Campaign. Each minifig has its own matching color reflected on the display’s floor, and while the monochrome design symbolizes equality, each figure also has its own little added twist in the form of a unique hairstyle to show that everyone is different and beautiful.

With the set, LEGO joins other toy giants like Mattel in offering more inclusive additions to their product lineups. The latter has expanded their brand in recent years to boost diversity with more inclusive Barbies. This year, they also introduced a twist on the classic UNO card deck with rainbow-colored cards available exclusively at Target.

The LEGO Botanical Collection, announced on December 30th, 2020, is a range of “mindful models,” including a flowered bouquet and a seasonally changing Bonsai tree.

“While many people seek out green spaces to de-stress and relax, adults can now bring a touch of nature into their home and unwind as they create and customize their botanical builds,” LEGO said in its official press release. “And the great news is that LEGO plants don’t need to be watered to stay fresh.”

Those are some encouraging words for aspiring gardeners who don’t have much of a green thumb. And appropriately, both sets feature some components constructed from plant-based plastic, itself made from sustainably sourced sugarcane.

The 756-piece, first-ever “Bouquet” set consists of an assortment of roses, poppies, snapdragons, asters, daisies, and various grasses in a visually-striking array of colors. The stems can be adjusted to fit in any size vase, and the petals are repositionable for an endless combination of displays. The company suggests this bunch of beaming blossoms would even make a “special and unusual gift” for anniversaries and birthdays.

The Bonsai tree kit, with its 878 pieces, allows LEGO fans to experience the ancient art of carefully snipping leaves and branches to create an exquisitely shaped shrub. Can the holiday season be the same without a new Star Wars movie? Fans of the series may mourn the lack of a live-action flick this year, but they’ll still have something new to celebrate. A special titled The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special will premiere on Disney+ November 17th, referencing the Star Wars Holiday Special that aired on the same date all the way back in 1978.

The original 90-minute holiday special, which followed Luke, Leia, Han, and Chewie after the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, wasn’t exactly a huge hit for CBS, and it’s never been made available again. But it did introduce the concept of “Life Day,” an important holiday for the Wookiee planet of Kashyyyk, which happens to fall on November 17th.

The new animated 45-minute special will reunite Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose, R2D2, BB-8 and, of course, Chewy for a “joyous feast.” It’s the first LEGO special to debut on the Disney streaming service, and with it comes a host of new holiday-themed merchandise like the 2020 LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar and sticker book.

An official synopsis for the special explains: “Set after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Rey leaves her friends to prepare for Life Day as she embarks on a new adventure with BB-8 to gain a deeper knowledge of the Force. At a mysterious Jedi temple, Rey finds herself hurled into a cross-timeline adventure through beloved moments in Star Wars cinematic history, coming into contact with Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and other iconic heroes and villains from all nine Skywalker saga films. But will she make it back in time for the Life Day feast and learn the true meaning of holiday spirit? You’ll have to watch to find out!”

It’s unclear whether the entire cast from the most recent live-action films is returning for the special, including Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Kelly Marie Tran. The animated film is directed by Ken Cunningham and written by David Shayne, who’s also co-executive producer.

“Life Day was a Wookiee holiday celebrated by the inhabitants of Kashyyyk. It was a celebration of the planet’s diverse ecosystem and the many forms of life it encompassed. Life Day was a sacred holiday, and many Wookiees considered it their duty to return to Kashyyyk in order to celebrate it. Life Day was held once every three local years for many generations, but it became celebrated more frequently as its popularity slowly grew to the wider galaxy. By the time of the Galactic Civil War, Life Day’s importance to the Wookiees had become more pronounced.”

The new holiday special is just the latest crossover between the toy company and the sci-fi franchise, who have also released collaborative films, television specials like The Padawan Menace, six video games, and many, many themed LEGO sets.

Internationally recognized and beloved by people of all ages, LEGO bricks have earned their reputation as creatively stimulating toys. The possibilities of what can be built with LEGOs are virtually endless, and that’s exactly what makes them so fun. Of course, these little plastic blocks are useful well after playtime is over, whether they’re being incorporated into modern furniture designs or colorfully filling in damaged patches on a building’s exterior. Now, one of the most unexpected LEGO creations is giving disabled animals a new way to get around.

When an injured turtle was brought into the Maryland Zoo’s hospital, doctors patched up damage to the underside of his shell, but they weren’t sure how to keep him off it as he healed. Turtles tend to heal slowly because of their slow metabolisms, so the shattered fragments needed extra time to fuse back together.

“They don’t make turtle-sized wheelchairs, so we drew some sketches of a customized wheelchair and I sent them to a friend who is a LEGO enthusiast,” says Garrett Fares, veterinary extern at the zoo.

The result is pretty brilliant. Not only does the turtle’s new LEGO ride help him cruise around during the healing process, but it also preserves his ability to perform crucial turtle tasks, like fully retracting into his shell whenever he feels threatened. The external frame elevates and stabilizes the turtle’s shell and sits on four LEGO wheels. The clever assistive mechanism is held in place using plumber’s putty, so it doesn’t hurt the turtle at all.

Believe it or not, this little guy isn’t the first animal — or even the first reptile — to get a LEGO wheelchair. Previously, a tiny tortoise named Blade got a shiny LEGO wheelchair of his very own when a growth condition weakened his legs, hindering his mobility. This chair’s three-wheeled design is a lot simpler than that of the last one, since Blade didn’t have a specific injury to protect. Elsewhere, Schlildi, a pet turtle living in Germany, was the lucky recipient of an awesome LEGO prosthetic after losing a leg.

A tiny hedgehog named Chappi was beginning to experience difficulty walking due to the adorably named Wobbly hedgehog syndrome, a degenerative disorder that can cause loss of muscle control. Upon realizing that she could no longer use her feet, Chappi’s owner built her a custom LEGO wheelchair that made a big difference in her quality of life.

Another toy commonly used to build DIY wheelchairs for animals is K’NEX, a construction set that was widely popular in the 1990s. In 2013, a Florida veterinarian named Dr. Len Lucero fashioned a K’NEX wheelchair for a piglet named Chris P. Bacon, who was born unable to use his legs. Having since grown absolutely enormous, Chris now prefers to crawl around.

In Massapequa, New York, an abandoned kitten with temporarily paralyzed back legs graduated from a LEGO wheelchair to a K’NEX one as he got bigger. As an adult, “Mac N’ Cheez” — named after the box he was in when he was delivered to the vet — regained full control of his legs.

When you were a little kid, did you ever wish you could actually climb into your awesome Lego creations? We sure did, and that all came rushing back when we saw EverBlocks. These life-size lego blocks fit together just like their toy counterparts, but they let you build actual, usable structures instead of just mini replicas.

The blocks come in full-size (one foot long), half-size (six inches long), quarter-size (three inches long), and finishing caps, all of which interlock. To put together a large, functional structure, you have to use a combination of Lego building methods and conventional construction principles.

Just like with LEGOs, to connect and build your structure up, each layer has to cover the seams of the layer below it. For added structural security, each block has a channel built into it to accommodate reinforcement rods. Connector clips and metal baseplates can add to the structures’ stability.

EverBlock has some intriguing ideas for potential uses for their giant blocks. On their site, they suggest that the system could be used to construct temporary modular buildings. The structures could be used as emergency shelter or temporary workspaces. When it’s time to move on, they can be taken apart and reused in some other place. There are no tools involved in building or un-building, so they can be reused over and over.

The blocks come in 14 sizes, including metallic gold and silver, which can be put together in endless combinations to create your very own customized lego furniture, room dividers, trade show booths, toys, and whatever else you can dream up. The company can even rent you blocks for special events or provide design and installation services. But we’re 100% sure it’ll be more fun to build those projects yourself. Adding a new wall to your home or office interior is never easy, but when you make it into a fun project it can at least be a little less painful. That’s just what the crew at Hamburg, Germany-based design studio NPIRE did with their crazy wall made entirely of Lego bricks.

The designers spent nearly a year constructing the wall, which is an impressive nine feet high by ten feet wide. It divides the hallway from the office kitchen, effectively creating a separate room. The before picture, above, shows just how big an impact the LEGO design change had on the space.

As you might expect, a build of this size required a lot of Legos: around 55,000. The firm says that some of the Legos were recycled, but they used some 80 packs of brand-new bricks. They even managed to cleverly work the company logo into the insanely ambitious build.

“At the very beginning there was total dreariness both in the hallway and in our kitchen. When we moved into the office in mid-2008, we initially had a lot of other worries and were actually quite satisfied with the fact that we even had a hallway and a kitchen.”

“Little by little, I felt the desire to create a separation between the kitchen or dining area and the hallway. And then another six months later the time had come, I had the only correct and most obvious thought: We need a Lego wall to be able to hide all the empties and the rubbish behind it.”

“The Lego wall separates the dining area from the hallway, which is why sitting at the dining table in the kitchen is now much more comfortable and customers no longer have to go through the chaos on their way to the toilet or the other half of the office. In addition, the Lego wall is a creative and at the same time functional solution to an existing problem. This kind of problem solving is of course our favorite way as an agency and thus the entire room has now become a great reference for us.”

Open your eyes, and the gaps! This curious cure for common passer-by blindness is not a real-life project proposal, but a compelling way to draw attention to gapes and holes in the built fabric we have come to ignore. It uses fantasy LEGO buildings to envision how cities could use wasted spaces.

Spanish designers of Espai MGR took to the streets of Valencia, putting fantastic and colorful LEGO creations in various vacant lots, attracting us to (a lack of) things we would normally pass as pedestrians or drivers, unawares due to sheer familiarity.

Abandonments are a given even in the most active city, but do more damage than many people realize – particularly once we are used to them. While clever and certainly of a much larger scale, regardless, it seems likely that these folks drew some inspiration from another ongoing LEGO infill project that actually exists.

“Day by day we pass by vacant lots downtown. Just like an invisible metastasis generated in the heart of the city and extending to all its arteries. Neighborhoods that, although having a huge potential, have more and more unused spaces, a fact that does not at all promote a correct sustainable development. Years have made us immune to this problem. It’s a landscape we already recognize as typical of the central neighborhoods in Valencia.”

“Sometimes, the tourists are the ones who open our eyes by mentioning or questioning whether this situation is normal. Adding to their growing collection of architectural LEGO sets, the latest in the line will be the famous Robie House, one of the American Institute of Architects’ top ten most significant works of architecture from the 20th Century.

This Modernism-influenced, Prairie Style classic features quintessential Frank Lloyd Wright design choices including a strong horizontal emphasis, winding entryway and experiential rather than centralized interior plan – and hits the stores next month.

“The Frederick C. Robie House is a U.S. National Historic Landmark on the campus of the University of Chicago in the South Side neighborhood of Hyde Park in Chicago, Illinois. Built between 1909 and 1910, the building was designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and is renowned as the greatest example of Prairie School, the first architectural style considered uniquely American. It was designated a National Historic Landmark on November 27, 1963, and was on the first National Register of Historic Places list of October 15, 1966.”

Other LEGO buildings by America’s most well-known architect include the Guggenheim Museum, which spun the traditional flat-floored, rectangular-walled museum concept into a dynamic spiral.
