Clawfoot cast iron tubs will never go out of style, but the builder-quality jetted soaking tubs seen in many homes are getting a little tired. Often built into tiled surrounds, these behemoths are just as ugly as they are difficult to clean. This year, more people will go for reasonably sized freestanding bathtubs in interesting shapes to make their bathrooms feel more spa-like. Translucent tubs and Japanese-style soaking tubs are standout options, like this striking red tub from Cassa Design.

Cozy Colors and Bold Prints

Painting the entire bathroom white can go a long way toward making it feel fresh, but there’s a serious downside in all that visible dirt. It’s also kind of boring. Cozier, warmer color schemes will replace this outdated trend in 2023 to make the bathroom feel more comforting. Olive green, peach, and rich earth tones are among the top colors that will gain popularity this year, along with boosting the personality factor through wallpaper.

Modern stick-up wallpaper is much easier to put up and take down than its predecessor, and it’s available in virtually every print and color you can imagine on Etsy. For more traditional styles, you can’t go wrong with William Morris. This dark botanical print is from Etsy seller Los Angeles Wallpaper.

More of Your Personality

Bring warmth and personality to your bathroom with decor like antique furniture, window treatments, oil paintings, and other statement-making pieces. Some people are even adding rugs (just not too close to the toilet, of course). The idea is to decorate the bathroom more like you would the other rooms in your home instead of keeping it so sterile. Bringing in elements that really speak to who you are will not only make your bathroom more interesting to look at, it’ll also make it feel nicer to be in. Large artworks and a textural vase do just that in this bathroom by designer Sean Anderson.

Artistic Tile

Textured, decorative tile will be a hit in 2023, along with mosaics and other custom patterns. Try mixing and matching tile patterns, finding handmade options that feel really unique, or creating eye-catching geometric patterns. Terrazzo continues to be on the rise, bringing in a lot of fun speckled textures while remaining easy to clean. It often comes in large-format sizes, too, so there’s less grout to deal with. This gorgeous installation was created by designer Jamie Drake in collaboration with Cheryl Hazan Mosaic.

Mix of Old and New

Bathrooms where everything is brand new and matchy-matchy can feel a little soulless. On the other hand, you also don’t want it to feel like a time capsule. Go for a sweet spot in the middle by mixing old and new elements. For example, an antique commode is a great replacement for a vanity from a big-box store. Ornate mirrors and lighting also pop in small spaces. Here, designer Andrea Schumacher turned an old chinoiserie cabinet into a washstand with the addition of a marble waterfall top.

Statement Stone

Big slabs of statement stone also rank among this year’s top bathroom decor trends. The more dramatic, the better. It might come in the form of a bespoke vanity top, a backsplash, shower walls, or even flooring. Natural materials are preferable if possible, but you can get a similar look with materials like travertine and eco-stone. This dramatic wall is made of Elite Stone’s Calacatta Borghini Imperiale paneling.

Mount Fuji shows off the company’s angular Comodo and Ultra series within a minimalist wood-lined micro hut. Graphic black fixtures echo the hut’s charred “shou sugi ban” exterior and stand out against the pale interior cladding. “Natural materials such as spruce and white enamel create the basis for a warm, relaxed bathroom. In combination with dark smoked glass and soft cotton, the result is a natural fusion of colors and textures. Gentle purism that radiates pleasant tranquility and modern restraint.”

Orbit focuses on futuristic geometries contrasted against stony terrain for its BetteArt bath and BetteArt washbasins, which break down the components of standard bathroom fixtures to pure elegance. “In combination with the roughness of the surrounding scenery, the result is an exciting interplay between strong structure and soft lines that blends gently with shiny silver details,” the company explains. “Opposites have never attracted each other more stylishly.”

Miami takes a more cosmopolitan approach, and one flooded with light. Featuring BetteLux Oval as the central architectural highlight, this bathroom envisioned as a cabana on the beach aims to elicit thoughts of warm breezes and fresh salt air. The company explains that it’s “on the border between modernity and postmodernism,” using edges and circles in tandem with naturally flowing lines to create design elements that feel like “little islands of relaxation.”

Custom Showroom Spaces in Real Life

Bette has translated this idea to its real-life showroom, too. Created by design studio Atelier 522, he new BettePlaces at the company’s headquarters in Delbrück, Germany has created a series of built environments in which individual bathrooms are displayed, most strikingly a round rammed earth structure that looks like a sculptural work of art someone stumbled upon in the desert. Little wooden house-shaped rooms, brightly colored cubes, and tranquil bamboo-lined spaces reminiscent of Japanese spas allow you to imagine all the different ways you could decorate your own bathroom at home around Bette’s products.

“Made from a wide variety of materials, such as concrete, clay plaster, or Yakisugi-charred spruce wood, each bathroom possesses a very specific aesthetic and constructional situation, with Bette products as the highlight,” explains Atelier 522 CEO Philipp Beck. “Product design and architecture merge, showing in the finest detail how good design can draw everything together: from the spaces in which we live, and their individual architecture, to the center of the home – the bathroom.”

Swiss brand LAUFEN, who manufactures designer bathrooms, teamed up with architects Gabrielle Hächler and Andreas Fuhrimann to create what feels like a fever dream of bizarre bathroom concepts highlighting its products. Each one tries to capture a different mood with graphics, videos, animations, and soundscapes, taking you on a journey through a series of spaces where you may or may not notice LAUFEN’s toilets, sinks, tubs, and other bathroom fixtures making appearances in between all the weirdness.

The URBAN room is described as “a platform of hope and reflection,” featuring industrial machinery, birds, a UFO, and quite a few dystopian elements alongside the brand’s products.

The DESERT room full of cacti, wind turbines, and Joshua trees is a bit more cheerful and relaxing, even with the frog popping out of the toilet at the end.

In the FOREST room, scenes of deer, trees in the night, and a moonlit sky are interspersed with layers of code. Are you on mushrooms? Are you actually hooked up to a machine in a depressing post-apocalyptic environment while your consciousness experiences The Matrix? Who knows. What’s important here is that LAUFEN’s contemporary bathroom pieces actually look really good in this strange space. Maybe you should get some forest-themed wallpaper to go with them.

In the ARTIST room, we see artist Michelle Baumann and the commissioned art pieces she created for this collaboration: bold, graphic shapes in vivid colors splashed across LAUFEN’s fixtures. It’s enough to make you wonder, briefly, why we don’t see items like these available in creative colors and patterns more often. Then we remember resale value.

The point of the LAUFEN Virtual Space isn’t to replicate real-world bathrooms, naturally. It’s a marketing campaign, but it’s fun and arty. In a press release, the company explains that “in midst of the pandemic, online virtual rooms provide a context to products, guided by a meaningful message. Senses such as touch, smell, and personal relations are getting dangerously neglected with disastrous consequences on mental as well as physical health. This forces us to reinvent the ecosystem of communication and relationships through the creation of formats that blur the lines between digital and physical.”

“LAUFEN virtual space is about exploring a dream-like landscape through four different Kartell by LAUFEN sets and nature-infused stories that let one wander and wonder. The space wants to provide an experience of digitally animated, semi-interactive collages. Surreal spaces with a wink and the purposely very tactile feel while being fully immersed in the digital. A journey of process and progress telling a story and carefully taking the products by the hand. Almost like strolling through a LAUFEN booth at a fair designed by architect Gabrielle Hächler and Andreas Fuhrimann.”

Monica, type A personality and chef, generally kept her eclectically decorated Greenwich Village apartment immaculate and ready to host a gathering at a moment’s notice. But, as revealed in “The One with Frank Jr.,” there’s one room that Monica neglected: her bathroom. As Joey Tribbiani points out, “You know, if you move your hamper you can see the color the tile used to be!”

If Monica were a real person, we’d imagine she would have given her bathroom at least a small update by 2021. Now, the folks over at QS Supplies have taken the liberty of giving her bathroom a digital makeover in a range of styles they imagine she might choose, from industrial to Moroccan.

Farmhouse Style

Monica’s real bathroom, like much of the rest of her apartment, was painted a very 90s shade of purple. That loud vibe is pretty much the opposite of contemporary farmhouse style, where predominately black and white palettes are typically accented with beige and gray. Perhaps the most realistic (and likely) makeover on this list, it’s pretty easy to pull off, from the plastered paint and wainscoting to the classic tub filler and checkerboard floor.

Tropical Style

Marrying tropical style with modern sensibilities, this fantasy renovation wows with a lush wall of living vegetation alongside the tub, so you can take a mini-vacation in your very own mini-resort whenever you want. Stone, elaborately carved reliefs on the wooden door and a ceiling fan bring the look together.

Art Deco Style

Everything about this Art Deco style bathroom makeover says “sophistication,” from the gorgeous tray ceiling and bold patterned floor to the capiz sconces and gold accents. Of course, if your bathroom looks like this, one would hope that the rest of your apartment is on the same level.

Moroccan Style

Drama, saturated color, and to-die-for patterns characterize this vibrant conversion, turning Monica’s bathroom from blah to unforgettable. Naturally water-resistant stone flags and mosaic tiling are a great choice for both function and looks. Using a piece of wooden furniture in place of a standard vanity is one designer’s trick more of us should keep in mind for our own renovations, and the arch shapes of the door and bath entry take this look over the top.

Japanese Style

For a personality type that could use a little zen, a Japanese-style bathroom might be a good idea. This redesign feels spacious, open, and relaxing, with an absolutely epic wooden bathtub. Timber slats on the walls bring in some warmth, and who wouldn’t love a gorgeous bonsai growing in their shower?

“Are you familiar with the Japanese concept of unagi?” writes QS Supplies. “According to Ross Geller, it’s a Japanese concept meaning ‘state of total awareness.’ According to the Japanese, unagi means ‘freshwater eel.’ It’s a good lesson in Japanese design style: if you want it for your bathroom, make sure you understand the principles, not just the surface appearance!”

Industrial Style

Perhaps the style that most announces “I’m a successful chef in New York City,” this look reimagines Monica’s apartment as a warehouse conversion with raw concrete walls and flooring, a decorative metal grille ceiling, a sliding door, lots of hard angular shapes, and what looks like a slightly smaller, less comfortable tub than her original clawfoot.

A new video from UK bathroom supply store QS Supplies illustrates 500 years of “evo-loo-tion” in 90 seconds flat. Starting in the year 1520, this brief history of the bathroom tracks major developments like sewer systems, running water, toilet paper, and the introduction of matching accoutrements. Though this UK-centric history is limited to the Western world, ignoring earlier advancements of sewer systems and bidets across the globe, it’s still an interesting glimpse at how this essential space has changed over time.

1520-1620: You Only Bathed Alone if You Were Fancy

For much of human history, people had little choice but to embrace their natural funk in between rare visits to a public bath, and it wasn’t uncommon to relieve yourself just about anywhere outdoors. The whole reason perfumes were developed (and considered a luxury) was to combat the general stench of body odor and human waste in the streets. If you were among the upper classes, you at least had a scented handkerchief to hold to your nose when necessary, and by the 16th century, you might have been lucky enough to have a bathtub at home, too.

During this period, the wealthy enjoyed freestanding wooden bathtubs filled with water heated in a cauldron, often placed near a fireplace for warmth. Castles were newly equipped with “garderobes,” which were basically upper-level turrets with holes in the floor that emptied into cesspools, moats, or just the ground. A jug and basin were used to wash your hands afterward.

1620-1720: Chamber Pots and Slight Tub Upgrades

A hundred years later, many people in cities were doing their business indoors. Now in widespread use, the chamber pot introduced a lot more convenience, whether you had an outhouse or not (but it was supposed to be for number one only). Wealthier people moved on to commodes, which were boxes with a seat and lid covering the chamber pot to reduce odors. Tubs also became more common at this time due to concerns about catching diseases in public baths, but the inconvenience of hauling and heating water meant you had to at least share the water, if not the tub. Many bathtubs from this period were also lined with steel to help keep them warm longer.

1720-1820: The Advent of Mirrors

No longer just for essential bodily functions, bathrooms started to become private spaces for grooming and preening in the 18th century. Instead of keeping their tub, chamber pot, and jug in the living area, people started confining these items to their own spaces. Commodes became common, and in 1775, a watchmaker named Alexander Cummings invented the S-pipe, the prelude to the modern flushing toilet. One of the most significant developments during this period was the increased affordability of mirrors, which were previously very expensive to produce.

1820-1920: Sewers, Running Water, and Toilet Paper

This is the time when bathrooms started to look like something we’d recognize today. Governments decided to get a handle on the public hygiene situation, building sewer systems and running water pipes to most urban homes. That meant the average person could have a flush toilet, a sink, and a bathtub, with water typically heated by a boiler in the basement. Rich people’s bathrooms grew more ornate than ever, with chandeliers, gilded fixtures, exposed pipes, and a nifty new invention called toilet paper (though frankly, we’d probably all be better off if the whole world embraced bidets instead).

1920-2020: The Bathroom as a Self-Care Refuge

Over the past century, bathrooms have become one of the most important rooms in our homes, typically second only to the kitchen in terms of how much money and care is put into their design. Water heaters and electricity transformed them into hallowed spaces where we can preen for hours on end with a full expectation of privacy. Nowadays, smart technology is taking luxury bathrooms up a notch by remembering our preferences for temperature and water pressure, automatically adjusting the lighting, displaying digital information on our mirrors, and even heating the toilet seat.

It’s wild to think of what bathrooms might look like in another 100 years, isn’t it?

UK-based bathroom retailer QS Supplies has taken some of these paintings and brought them to life, giving them a whole new sense of realism. Translating six scenes into digitally rendered environments, they let us envision these painted spaces as if we could walk right into them, taking new inspiration from their designs. Some are ordinary, others strikingly ornate – one is even the scene of history’s most famous bathroom assassination.

“Whether you want a bathroom for solo spa sessions, sensual encounters, or simply to murder a French revolutionary, history’s finest artists are way ahead of you with the mood boards,” the company writes. “Who better to turn to for bathroom renovation ideas?”

Each work is presented on the QS Supplies website as an interactive sliding image between the original painting and the digital rendering (shown here as separate images). Some elements are left exactly as they were originally envisioned, while others have been altered slightly to show contemporary equivalents.

Carl Larsson’s Bathroom Scene – Lisbeth (1909) is among the most Instagram-worthy of the bunch, and it’s directly translatable to desirable contemporary style. The painting depicts the artist’s daughter Lisbeth drawing a bath sometime in the late 19th century within the Arts and Crafts home decorated by Larsson’s wife Lilla Hyttnäs. We just have one question: where can we buy that beautiful brass tub filler? “You’ve got to love that tub and vintage-style exposed pipes,” QS writes, “and if walls a shade of ‘creativity green’ never go out of fashion, how about a Scandi-style sauna underfoot?”

Perhaps most divisive of all is the re-imagination of the 1935 painting simply titled Bathroom by Perkins Harnly, depicting a Victorian bathroom with paneled wood walls, a velvet chair, a Chinese-style painted folding screen, and a gold-embellished toilet. If you’re a maximalist, you probably love it. Otherwise, it’s…a lot.

As promised, QS has also included a portrayal of the death of French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat at the hands of Charlotte Corday in this series. Jacques Louis David’s version, featuring Marat slumped over in the tub in the middle of writing a letter, is more famous, but in terms of bathroom design, there’s less to work with. Here we have Edvard Munch’s more colorful interpretation. “It’s not the jolliest bathroom, then. But the use of marble adds a grandness and cleanliness to the scene. The terracotta tiling feels very European, and the curved doorway softens the austere scene.”

Bathrooms are usually fairly small, so they may not seem like great candidates for dark hues. But you don’t have to paint your whole bathroom black in order to pull off this trend. The idea of open shelving in the bathroom isn’t to keep all your clutter in full view, but rather to mimic a spa-like feeling with well-curated vignettes. Shelves on the wall or beneath your vanity might display baskets full of plush towels, aesthetically friendly bath oils and salts, plants, or apothecary jars full of cotton balls.

If you’re disappointed that, in the decidedly futuristic-sounding year of 2020, we still don’t have all the cool tech predicted back in the 80s, you can at least soothe yourself with a shower that’s perfectly customized to your preferences down to the single degree. Smart features are invading one of our most private spaces, and while to some people that sounds like a nightmare, to others it’s a dream.

For instance, Kohler has a new smart toilet with built-in speakers, ambient lighting and, for some reason, Amazon Alexa support. Their Verdera Voice Lighted Mirror supports Google Assistant, as well, playing music, telling you the weather, or changing the color of the integrated lights. And Kohler’s PerfectFill bathtub technology will draw a bath “to your preferred preset temperature and desired depth with a simple voice command.”

Giddel brings us just a little bit closer to making Rosie the house cleaning robot from The Jetsons a reality — minus the sass, of course. Taking in its somewhat bulky proportions, you might be wondering whether you’re just going to end up spending a lot of time disinfecting it after it does its job, especially since it clips beneath the toilet lid and sits right within the bowl. The secret, according to manufacturer Altan Robotech, lies in its splash-free cleaning process, antimicrobial plastic body, and the telescopic arm that keeps it up out of the water as it scrubs.

Designed to fit inside any standard toilet bowl, Giddel hovers just out of the danger zone and extends its arm to reach on top of, inside, and under the rim, as well as well within the bowl itself and the drain. Its “memory-touch technology” maps varying bowl shapes using advanced software, directing the arm to specific 3D coordinates in both round and elongated toilets. This process ensures that the brush reaches every last spot that needs to be cleaned, but don’t worry — the brush head doesn’t spin, so you’ll never have to worry about it flinging germs all over the place in the process.

Altan Robotech adds: “Giddel is the most advanced toilet cleaning robot on the market. It has 115 mechanical, electronic, and sensory components, making it highly intelligent and functional. Unlike other domestic service robots that have stationary bodies, Giddel possesses articulating joints that move relative to one another. Setup only takes a few minutes. Once the mounting bracket is installed, you simply insert the robot into place. It even has a built-in reservoir and pump to thoroughly rinse out missed areas when you flush. When you’re done, just stick it back in its charging station. The one caveat to this whole bundle might be the fact that the station is on the larger side — and you probably don’t want Giddel to be on display in your bathroom, so you might want to tuck it into a closet to charge if you can.

For a lot of people, cleaning the toilet is a quick and easy task, and paying a steep retail price of $499.99 to have a robot do the work just isn’t worth it. But if you’re the squeamish type, Altan Robotech notes that over time, the cost of Giddel becomes less than that of hiring a maid, and it’s covered by a one-year warranty, to boot.

In 2017, Star Trek fans gained control of the Bridge Crew through a set of voice commands integrated into video game software. Now you can use voice activation at home to control everything from bathroom and kitchen fixtures to appliances and mirrors. Kudos to Amazon’s Alexa and the Google Assistant for thrusting voice control into everyday life and encouraging the exponential growth of this technology. 3D Printing Goes Metal

We’ve all marveled at the plastic prototypes created by 3D printing in the past couple years. The seemingly magical process has already been used to create common household goods and medical implants, and it only continues to amaze in the manufacturing world. Now, LIXIL Americas has 3D printed a set of fantastically-designed metal faucets for the public. Jean-Jacques L’Henaff, the company’s Vice President of Design, explains: “3D printing allows manufacturers to push the boundaries with material options, processes, cost, and quality of goods.” A kitchen and bath trend that will surely be heard around the world.

Rolling In The Deep

For decades, cooks have appreciated that deep drawer under the oven that easily accommodates broiler pans and pot lids. Finally, kitchen cabinet designs are starting to incorporate extra deep drawers to easily store Dutch ovens and other hefty pots that there never seems to be enough space for.

Sinks With Built-In Lids

Not only can you hide dirty dishes in kitchen sinks with covers, but you can also use the extra counter space for whatever you want. Sliding lids can also transform bathroom sinks into flat surfaces to hold makeup bags and protect precious jewelry from falling down the drain.

Kitchen islands with ample storage space in their lower regions are ideal for storing small appliances and other counter clutterers. Many new models also feature expandable tabletops to provide a couple extra seating spots for dinner guests.

So many people like the cushy comfort of banquette seating in coffee shops and diners that they are now available in a wide range of styles for home kitchens. Kauri wood — the most ancient wood on earth, according to Riva 1920 — was used to craft the credenza. It is 50,000-years-old and has been aged under mud and water for thousands of years in Auckland, New Zealand.

You can reveal the DeKauri’s hidden interiors by sliding its two main rustic yet modern doors to the side. When open, a washbin by Dekton (a subsidiary of Cosentino) serves as the main focal point. Made from an ultra-compact surfacing material, this washbin boasts low water absorption and is made to be scratch, stain, UV, and impact-resistant. Juniper Design played their part by providing the vanity with a rectangular mirror and bright lighting. The interior also features a beautiful gold faucet from the “Fantini AF/21” collection by Fantini Rubinetti.
Germani planned to turn heads by incorporating materials that were visually appealing but that also resembled the freshness of Mother Nature. The combination of natural stone and Kauri wood creates an exotic yet humble aesthetic. The vanity is also available in cedar, walnut, and wenge wood.

Daniel Germani is a familiar face to both companies, as this is his fifth collaboration with Cosentino and his second with Riva 1920. He recognizes that design is constantly evolving and that there are always new and fresh ways to spice up a space. When it comes to bathroom design, he feels as if not enough has changed. “When it comes to the kitchen there are ingenious, innovative design solutions to hide and store everything,” he explains. “But that’s not always the case in the bathroom. I realized bathroom storage has at its core remained the same.” That gave him the idea to conceal both sink and storage in a freestanding piece of furniture.
“DeKauri transforms incredibly utilitarian parts of the bath into something incredibly beautiful. It helps take away the feeling of being in a bathroom. I could very easily see this in a master suite, a power room, or even in an open-concept bedroom where the sleeping space and bath flow into one another.”

After the credenza received such widespread acclaim at KBIS, Cosentino announced that it also planned to exhibit DeKauri at Salone Milan in April, where it will likely continue to wow the masses.

Is it possible for a utilitarian space like an outdoor public restroom to be seen as something beautiful as well as useful? The Trail Restroom along Austin’s Ladybird Hike and Bike Trail proves that places like this do not have to be cold, impersonal, and kind of scary – they can function as works of art.

Miro Rivera Architects took on the task of creating a public restroom for the park – the first one built there in more than 30 years. The exterior is made up of Corton steel plates that vary in height and width. The plates coil around like a seashell, eventually forming the restroom walls.

The restroom’s door and roof are made of the same steel material, unifying the look and letting in natural light through the gaps in the plates. Because of the air that flows through the restroom and the sunlight that penetrates the spaces between the plates, the bathroom requires neither artificial light or ventilation.

Inside, a toilet, urinal, sink, and bench make up the restroom’s facilities. Outside of the door, a drinking fountain and shower allow runners and bikers to take a rest and cool off. The steel slats will become darker as they age, lending the structure the appearance of an ancient monument.

“The Restroom was conceived as a sculpture in a park, a dynamic object along the active trails. The structure consists of forty-nine 3/4″ thick vertical Corten steel plates whose width and height vary significantly in size, from 1′-0″ wide by 1′-6″ high to 2′-0″ wide by 13′-0″ high. The panels are arranged along a spine that coils at one end to form the restroom walls. The plates are staggered in plan to control views and to allow for the penetration of light and fresh air. Both the door and roof were fabricated from 3/4″ thick steel plates as well.”
