If you’re an adult Star Wars fan, you’ve probably wandered through aisles of movie-themed bedroom decor for kids and wished for a grown-up version. It’s like Sobel Westex read your mind with their new collection, Star Wars Home. Consisting of bedding sets, throw pillows, and more, these items are subtle enough to read as normal adult decor to the uninitiated. But to you and any other Star Wars superfans, each individual theme within the collection will capture a very particular mood: that of The Dark Side, the Astromech, the Jedi, and Tatooine.

Augmenting Sobel Westex’s classic sheets are the textural woven Galaxy Throw, a comforter set with matching shams, decorative throw pillows, and the Jedi Ancient Text Towel featuring the Star Wars alphabet Aurabesh in sculpted hi-lo jacquard cotton. Each collection has its own color scheme and unique designs for the throw pillows and bedding. Each piece is also available individually, so you can mix and match to customize the themes if you like.

Naturally, The Dark Side is the most dramatic of the bunch. “At the dark heart of our collection is the ultimate package to transform your bedroom into the lair of the Sith Lord. Immerse yourself nightly in the interior details and body armor of Darth Vader with a rich jacquard front comforter featuring a pattern inspired by the Death Star corridor, a modern interpretation of those dark, labyrinthian halls. Offset the dark tones of the comforter with two standard and two Euro pillow shams, and two decorative pillows, one quilted faux leather and one satin flocked, that boldly repeat interior details of the Death Star space station. The comforter set is available in full/queen and king sizes.”

As The Dark Side’s counterpoint, the Jedi collection is calm and contemplative in neutral hues. The kimono-style comforter is inspired by the simple styling of the signature Jedi robe, the throw pillows feature familiar motifs, and the matching Galaxy Throw in dune pulls it all together. Similarly, the Tatooine theme has a soft vibe in soothing desert tones, bleached-out colors, and the texture of natural surfaces inspired by Luke Skywalker’s home.

The Astromech collection stands out as vibrant and fun. The seven-piece bedding set features a geometric comforter in shades of blue referencing the mechanical components of R2-D2, as well as a satin flocked throw pillow with an instrument screen graphic pattern and a “red eye” round toss pillow.

“Of course, R2-D2 is among everyone’s favorite droids. To celebrate this wonderful character, Sobel Westex designed the Star Wars Astromech collection, a bright, cheerful reflection of the joy the little guy brings to the Star Wars world. The spirit of faithful R2-D2 is artfully recreated in our Astromech bedding collection fabrics and forms. The metallic blues and rounded designs of this stunning collection will catch the eye and help you recall the movie character’s spirit and adventures.”

The sleek, sexy flying cars of our sci-fi dreams are still (more than likely) a few decades away from becoming a reality – but that doesn’t mean we can’t take to the skies in our own personal vehicles as soon as next year. A new eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft by Jetson Aero fittingly called The Jetson not only makes it surprisingly easy to use your driveway or backyard in place of a runway, it’s a DIY kit that you put together yourself, like an unusually complex piece of IKEA furniture.

“Jetson is a Swedish company with a mission to change the way we travel,” reads the company’s website. “We aim to make the skies available for everyone with our safe personal electric aerial vehicle. Our prototype ‘proof of concept’ was finished in the spring of 2018, and until now we have been very busy working on a consumer-friendly version. That project resulted in Jetson ONE, a commercially available personal electric aerial vehicle that you can own and fly. Jetson was founded by Peter Ternström and Tomasz Patan in 2017. We intend to make everyone a pilot.”

Designed for adventure, this open-body flier with eight motors is to flying cars what quad bikes are to standard vehicles, in that it’s more for fun than practicality (at least for now). The Jetson is a single-occupant eVTOL that can take off and land virtually anywhere, making it an accessible entry point into the world of flying vehicles. Its style and usage has drawn comparisons to podracers, the small, single-occupant aircraft featured in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The Jetson weighs just 190 pounds, takes up 9.3 x 7.8 x 3.3 feet during flight, and folds down into a three-foot-square package when not in use, so you can easily stow it away in the garage or even a closet in between flights.

The Jetson’s racecar-inspired lightweight carbon and aluminum fiber body is lifted into the air by eight motors mounted co-axially on four arms, producing a total power output of 88kW. Though it can technically go faster, flight speed is limited to 63 mph by the vehicle’s built-in safety software. The pilot uses a three-axis joystick and throttle lever to control the aircraft, so it’s pretty easy to learn. The maximum pilot weight is just 210 pounds, however, which does present a limitation for some. You get 20 minutes of flight time per charge on the high discharge lithium-ion battery, which you presumably recharge via cable and a standard power outlet, though this info isn’t currently specified.

Obviously, safety is a big concern for any flying vehicle, and the Jetson has numerous features that aim to make it as low-risk as a personal aircraft like this can be. Another racecar-inspired feature is the safety seat that keeps you snugly strapped in during flight, while LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors monitor the terrain below. Sensors help the pilot avoid obstacles, and triple-redundant flight computers will hover the aircraft and perform emergency functions if for some reason the pilot loses control. The Jetson can fly safely with the loss of one motor, and it even has its own ballistic parachute with rapid deployment time in the event of an extreme failure.

At $92,000 USD, the Jetson isn’t exactly a small investment, but it certainly costs a heck of a lot less than owning your own airplane or helicopter. It’s clearly in demand, too. Last year, Jetson Aero offered pre-sales for the entire 2022 production run, which sold out within weeks to clients in California, Sweden, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Germany, and other countries. Two spots have already been reserved for 2023 vehicles, but others are still available for a down payment of $22,000. The kit you’ll receive contains everything you need, along with detailed build instructions.

The post This Exciting DIY Flying Car Kit Will Make Star Wars-Style “Podracing” Possible as Early as 2022 first appeared on Dornob.

For decades, Houston residents have wondered about the mysterious “Darth Vader House,” their nickname for a sprawling luxury residence in the city’s bustling West University Place subdivision. Built in 1992, the 7,040-square-foot home looks a lot like the infamous Sith Lord’s helmet from the outside. But few people ever got to see what it looked like inside – until now. The property has been listed for sale with agents Nadia Carron and Wade Knight of Martha Turner Sotheby’s International Realty for $4.3 million, and interior photos have finally been revealed.

The home sprang from the imagination of its owner, plastic surgeon Dr. Jean Cukier, who has long had a fascination with science fiction. He drew the concept on paper and gave it to architect Lynn Swisher Spears to bring to life. The neighbors reportedly weren’t in love with the design at first, nor its tendency to draw curious onlookers from around the world. But Star Wars fans are obsessed, and as it turns out, there are a few vaguely sci-fi features inside the house, too, though most of it just looks like your average Texas mansion.

At the center of the home is an angular atrium fit for a supervillain. There’s a grand staircase near the front door, soaring ceilings, and floors made of concrete and stone that were hand-cut and painted in black and white for a jagged effect. A huge sunken conversation pit is perhaps the home’s most divisive feature, set adjacent to the living room and kitchen and at the base of two floating staircases. It’s lined with rope lights that glow neon blue after dark and has an oddly antisocial sofa at the center, with four seats facing in different directions.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="The futuristic rope lights inside the Darth Vader House continue out onto an expansive second-story balcony.
For its massive size, you might be surprised to learn that the Darth Vader house only has 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, but each room is generously sized, especially the master suite. Other love-it-or-hate-it features include jagged stone countertops, oversized sculptures, and a totally open master bathroom tucked behind a partial wall.

Texas Monthly’s Paula Mejía got to tour the inside in person, reporting that it felt like “being on the set of a retro space-age B movie, à la Barbarella.” Of the atrium, she says, “This space strikes me as one that’s pitch-perfect for plotting. It’s a lair from which you might wheel and deal, perhaps scheming to take over the world. Cukier didn’t use it as an office at all when he lived here, though. It housed his music studio, which included a Moog synthesizer, organ, and piano.”

Believe it or not, when Dr. Cukier drew out his concept, he wasn’t imagining Darth Vader. His inspiration was aviation. He did, however, ask for it to be “dark and mysterious,” says listing agent Carron. “He wanted the inspiration around the house to be the stealth fighter, the aircraft. He just thinks out of the box, and he didn’t want something that you would see in every home.

The Star Wars empire has remained well in the entertainment world’s center-stage since the original movie release in 1977. For the past few weeks, fans have been enjoying The Mandalorian via the new streaming service Disney+, and it’s already become a smash-hit in it’s own right. A big reason for this is an undeniably adorable character being referred to as “Baby Yoda,” a moniker that isn’t quite accurate but is definitely descriptive enough (while the fox-eared baby is the same species as Master Yoda, it is not a younger version of the famed Jedi and is simply named “The Child” in the series).

Warsies looking for “The Child” merchandise prior to the release of the series were sorely out of luck since the studio didn’t want to leak any spoilers regarding the storyline and the pint-sized Yoda look-alike. As a result, there’s been a notable gap in the release of official Baby Yoda merch, allowing a flood of knockoffs to fill the void. Several people have reported being duped by these third-party products, while others seem more willing to accept a “less than” version of the real thing. Either way, just remember to do your research if you plan on gifting “The Child” to your child this year.

Without further ado, here are a few of our favorite Baby Yoda pieces to be announced thus far:

“The Child” Tee

T-shirts are the long-lasting and frequently-used merchandise every fan should own, and this 100-percent cotton tee offers both the adorable character and the comfort. Available in white with just the image or dark gray with the character’s name printed above, there will be no doubt that the Force is strong with you when you’re wearing it. The same print is also available in a ¾-sleeve jersey-style tee with the words “The Mandalorian” printed below it. There are also black-and-white tee options for kids.

Jigsaw Puzzle

For Star Wars fans who also enjoy working on jigsaw puzzles, this is an easy choice. Unfortunately, it won’t ship until December 30th, so plan accordingly. But with 500 pieces and a bonus poster, you’ll be able to enjoy The Child’s adorableness again and again.

PopSocket

One item you can get in time for stocking stuffing is the licensed PopSocket with The Child’s image printed on it. PopSockets are obviously “pop”ular with all ages as a cell phone accessory, and they make a great way to show off your love for the little alien.

Bobblehead

There’s no better way to expose your Warsian ways than with a Baby Yoda bobblehead. Coming in spring of 2020, the Funko POP! doll will be available in two sizes. It’s a little bit creepy and a lot bit cute.

11-Inch Plush

Though it’s not expected to be released until at least February 2020, we thought this one was just too cute to leave off the list. The plush is currently on preorder and will likely be the most anticipated product in the entire lineup. After all, who can resist that face?

Disney’s decision to delay the release of instantly iconic “The Child” merchandise has been met with mixed reception, but with confidence in consumers’ ongoing desire to be part of the Star Wars story, the company now seems to be releasing new items almost daily.

“It was important to us that the reveal of the new character, the Child, be a special moment for fans, and we could not be more thrilled with the response,” says Paul Southern, Senior Vice President of Licensing and Franchise for Lucasfilm. “Today, we’re excited to release new products for preorder on shopDisney.com, and are continuing to work closely with our licensees and retailers to roll out additional items including toys, collectibles, plush, games, apparel, and more, allowing fans to celebrate the newest addition to Star Wars.”

The post The Mandalorian’s “Baby Yoda” Merchandise is Both Adorable and Frustrating first appeared on Dornob.

It’s a coffee table. It’s a pinball machine. It’s a “Star Wars” lover’s dream. It’s the Droid, a piece of furniture so cool, you’ll want it whether you grew up with Darth Vader, Yoda and C-3PO or not. Created by utterly inventive Hungarian ALTAR furniture, this “one and only love child of Star Wars pinball and R2D2” has snagged a 2015 A’Design Award and garnered – deservedly – lots of international attention. The object, a bona fide coffee table on wheels, is basically a vintage “Star Wars” pinball field housed in the body of an R2D2.

This next piece of info (get ready for total geek-out), might be the most exciting aspect of this amazing creation: It has a mini slide projector that displays “R2D2 in the Death Stars’ sewage.” It beeps, it blinks, it whirs, it pings (see video below), it took 321 hours to come alive, and it costs circa $13,000 (if still available), not counting shipping from Budapest. It’s epic. We rest our case.

Its creators, ALTAR furniture, have devoted themselves to rescuing pin ball machines after they die, imbuing them with a second, awesome coffee table life as “wonderfully complicated, meticulously planned and crafted sexy beings,” as they so eloquently write on their website.

At first glance, the creepy-crawlies cataloged in Arthropoda Iconicus seem plausible, even if they’re a little unusual. After all, nature has plenty of strange specimens to study, like beetles with enormous horns, crickets that look like tiny aliens, moths resembling hummingbirds, and jaw-dropping examples of camouflage developed over millions of years of evolution.

But even if you momentarily marvel over a bug that bears a striking resemblance to the Creature of the Black Lagoon or Freddy Krueger, you’ll only have to look at a few more in the series before you see the pattern is impossible to miss.

Take, for instance, the family Timorpersonae:

“Timorpersonae are disparate in outward physical characteristics, but share behavioral traits rarely found in other species. These coleoptera tend to be highly aggressive, and the manner of capturing and consuming their prey is often playful and/or extended and will almost always show agonistic tendencies. Species of the family Timorpersonae have sometimes been observed displaying ritualized behavior when stalking and catching their prey and may sometimes engage in mating displays when feeding and vice versa.”

“Timorpersonae are almost always solitary and have developed hostile adaptive behaviors to counteract intrusion by other species. Being a nocturnal family of species, they nest in the darkest available areas. Their nests are often underground or in the abandoned nests of other species, and it has been noted that several species in the family Timorpersonae seem to decorate their nests with the empty husks of their prey.”

With names like Necuratu transylvestris and Daemonius sanctimonialis, these imaginary insects translate horror icons into arthropods of all kinds. Frankenstein’s monster, Stephen King’s It (as played by both Bill Skarskgaard and Tim Curry), and Dracula are displayed alongside villains like King Kong and the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park.

Timorpersonae is just the latest such series of pop culture bugs dreamed into creation by UK-based illustrator Richard Wilkinson, whose work has previously featured characters from all kinds of films and shows, including “Astromachinae”, and “Insanusmelodiae,” which you might recognize as Looney Tunes greats like Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird, Porky Pig, and Wile E. Coyote. Still, some are more obscure than others. Star Wars fans might have fun trying to identify them all. It also helps to squint.

“A recognizable and perhaps most peculiar aspect of the Insanusmelodiae’s behavior is their clumsiness. They often meet their end under a falling stone or twig, or after falling from a long drop. Their wings, also vestigial, can produce enough uplift to keep them in the air for a moment or two before they fall.”

Wilkinson says the series was born “out of a fascination with collecting, cataloging, and classifying,” merging an activity most often associated with the natural world with the pursuits of modern life, like video games, comics, and films.

Generally fan art comes in the form of drawings, sculptures, digital renderings and the like – a little less often it takes the form of furniture objects like this light that pays tribute to the classic AT-AT Walker from the original Star Wars movies.

It looks a bit like a long-legged wooden side table at first, but a drawer slides out to reveal the hidden ‘head’ of the walking vehicle. In turn, the resulting composition appears a lot like the mechanical legs and body of the AT-AT strider. The fact that it’s a table and a lamp in one, with a functional drawer, just makes it that much cooler.

Of course, you would not need to know the pop-cultural reference to see that this design by LifeGoods is neat regardless of context- though having the sci-fi savvy to recognize the robotic body implied in the form might help a bit when trying to explain this work at a dinner party (or geek film festival).

That’s the beauty of this piece. While a lot of furniture and home decor inspired by pop culture can feel kitschy, overly literal and cheap, LifeGoods’ version of an AT-AT in table form feels refined, elegant and truly useful. It could fit right in to all sorts of homes, whether or not any other Star Wars references are present.

“We are fascinated by wood and its codes,” say the designers, who were recognized for the piece at the [D3] Awards in Cologne.

“We pick up antique details of cabinetwork and give the object a look which is totally contemporary due to its dimensions. We explore the limits of the wooden piece by expanding its legs and by creating a drawer that functions as a light dimmer. The lamp is like a science fiction object but characterized by the warmth and the preciousness of woodwork.”

Guests will even get to “fly” a life-size replica of the Millennium Falcon through the heart of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance.

The two-day adventure is expected to cost anywhere from $900 to $1000, with rooms accommodating up to four people each. During the day, guests can explore the park and sample Star Wars-inspired treats like “blue milk” from a variety of themed restaurants. Disney even plans to replicate the famous “Mos Eisley Cantina” from the original films and bring it to life in Galaxy’s Edge!

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek had this to say on the project: “To say we are excited for the Star Wars-themed lands to open in 2019 is an understatement. All along, we have said this will be game-changing, and through the model we can begin to see how truly epic these immersive new worlds will be.”
Galaxy’s Edge is Disney’s largest ever single-themed expansion, and the company clearly couldn’t be more thrilled about it. Chris Beatty, the project’s Executive Director, even told ABC News: “It’s got to be big. Go big or go home with Star Wars.” Bearing in mind that Disney owns the rights to Star Wars and that series creator George Lucas is fully on-board with the expansion, it seems like the only thing that could hold the company back is the limits of its imagination.

“Cast members,” or theme park staff, will be dressed up as well-known Star Wars characters like Chewbacca, BB-8, and Kylo Ren. The Disney Parks blog explains that Galaxy’s Edge “will allow guests to visit a remote trading port on the edge of wild space, where Star Wars characters and their stories come to life — and where guests will find themselves in the middle of the action.”

If watching the film series has whetted your appetite for a more immersive Star Wars experience, you’re in luck: you only need to wait until 2019 before you can dust off your lightsaber and head over to Galaxy’s Edge.

As Yoda so succinctly proclaimed in The Empire Strikes Back, “always in motion is the future.” Filipino designer Kenneth Cobonpue invoked that same philosophy when he partnered with Disney Philippines to create a five-piece collection of furniture inspired by the iconic Star Wars movies — a collaboration he initially declined, no less.

Cobonpue told the Philippine Star, “At first, I said, you don’t need me for this because I don’t make replicas of machines and Star Wars fans will only buy something if there’s the face of Darth Vader on it — I don’t do that. They said, ‘No, no, no. We want you to interpret through the lens of a Filipino designer.'”

That was enough leeway to convince him to design a line based on his childhood recollections of the 1970s, when he was a big fan of the movies. The resulting take embodies his talent for designing unique high-end pieces, the likes of which have previously been purchased by movie stars like Jackie Chan, Harrison Ford, and Brad Pitt.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-60637" src="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/star4.jpg" alt="The Sidious Easy Armchair.
The Collection

Cobonpue’s Star Wars collection is comprised of the Vader, Sidious, and Imperial Wings Easy Armchairs, the Chewie Rocking Stool, and the Little Jedi Hanging Lamp.

Vader Easy Armchair

Modeled after one of the most famous Star Wars characters ever, this chair can be placed in both compact offices and cozy nooks. Its canopy is an airy open weave, and the attached table folds away at your leisure. The seat cushion features a scrupulously stitched image of Darth Vader’s daunting mask.

Sidious Easy Armchair

You’ll feel power surge through your veins as you sink into the Sidious armchair. The backrest is heightened and slightly curved to look like a hood, and the chair’s legs are slightly arched forward as if they’re ready to pounce. Sit there long enough, and you may start channeling the Sith Lord’s commanding and terrifying persona.

Imperial Wings Easy Armchair

The remarkable Imperial fleet TIE fighter emblem was the inspiration for the Imperial Wings armchair. The handwoven polyethylene construction so vividly instills feelings of dexterity and power that you’ll feel like an ace fighter pilot in no time.

Chewie Rocking Stool

In this design, Chewbacca and his famous bandolier are embodied in brown microfiber strips and encircled with a fabric sash. Cobonpue chose a rocking stool to emphasize the whimsy of the Wookiee warrior and steadfast friend, Han Solo.

Little Jedi Hanging Lamp

This distinctive lamp is pretty much a story made furniture. Made from salago fiber painstakingly applied by hand to the body, the lamp is adorned with tiny Jedi knights raising light sabers, which themselves provide the actual light. A Sith Lord in combat with the Jedi represents the lofty goals that can be attained when warring forces unite and battle for a greater good.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-60638" src="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/star3.jpg" alt="The Little Jedi Hanging Lamp.
Pieces from Cobonpue’s Star Wars collection were recently made public at AsiaPOP Comicon 2018 in Pasay City. Cobonpue has showrooms in Manila, Cebu, New York, and Munich, but his Star Wars furniture is currently only available in the Philippines.

The post Yub Nub!

Everybody loves a sequel, and no one knows how to capitalize on movie franchises better than big-name brands. With every new big-budget action sequel comes a slew of themed merchandise that gets superfans hovering over their computers and lining up for days outside stores to just be the first ones to get their hands on it. Now, Columbia Sportswear has unveiled a limited edition line of outerwear to coincide with the release of the long-awaited Star Wars film The Last Jedi in December 2017.

The brand is drawing on The Empire Strikes Back to create a new ready-to-wear trio of jackets and parkas that look as good off-screen as they do on-screen. The pieces in the “Echo Base Jackets” collection will no doubt be coveted pieces of memorabilia, especially considering the fact that there are only 1,980 of them available (this number was chosen in relation to the year 1980, in which Empire was released). In fact, all of these units have already been sold online, but it’s rumored that there’s a small amount of inventory available at selected Columbia retail outlets. The collection consists of the “Luke Skywalker” Echo Base jacket, the “Han Solo” Echo Base parka, and the “Leia Organa” Echo Base jacket. Similar jackets were worn by the cast of the 1980 film, and their designs have been heavily drawn on to produce the Echo Base collection (but are still officially licensed by Star Wars).

The Luke Skywalker jacket boasts a two-tone colorway in the form of a tan body vest and beige sleeves. It’s a cotton blend, water-resistant jacket and outer vest, and it has a retractable hood to protect you from the elements. The Han Solo parka channels its titular character’s rugged nature, and its fur-lined hood is perfect for battling wind and snow. The Leia jacket is similar to the Luke one, but it’s more fitted and has a lighter-colored outer vest to differentiate it. Each of the jackets are made from Omni-Heat Reflective insulation, which simultaneously makes them look like they’ve come from “a galaxy far, far away” and helps keep their wearers warm and toasty. Each of the pieces are stylish, versatile, and durable, and you don’t have to be a Star Wars fanatic to rock them, as they look great on just about anyone.

The prospect might seem a little out of left field, but this is actually not the first time that Columbia has used Star Wars as inspiration for its clothing. In December 2016, the clothing company released its “Rogue One” collection of jackets and coats, which took its cues from the first installment of the Star Wars “Anthology” series. Theses parkas and jackets were part-costume, part-durable outerwear and combined Columbia’s signature sturdiness and reliability with innovative new technologies and creative detailing to give the garments a distinctly “galactic” feel. The Last Jedi was just released last weekend. and we have no doubt that fans of the franchise will be wearing their new Echo Base jackets when they line up to get their tickets.

The post Star Wars-Inspired Clothing by Columbia Sportswear first appeared on Dornob.

Star Wars fans have been gearing up for the release of a new LEGO kit for the past few months, with the iconic building block company getting them hot under the collar with photo and video teasers on Twitter in advance of its launch. The frenzy started when wily Twitter users noticed a tag that read “UCS MF” on one of these teasers, assuming it to mean that the product in question would be the Ultimate Collector’s Set Millennium Falcon. As it turns out, they were right.

In a press release from the end of August, LEGO announced the launch of a revamped version of the classic “Millennium Falcon” spaceship, which is not only reported to be the most detailed building set that the company has ever released, but will also be its largest to date, consisting of over 7500 pieces! This seems to be something of a trend with this particular model, as its first release in 2007 was LEGO’s biggest set to date at that time, with a piece count of nearly 5,200. The Millennium Flacon kit has long been out of circulation, but now, the 2017 version will take its rightful place as the ruler of the LEGO kingdom.

The Millennium Falcon collector’s set will no doubt be hugely sought after by lovers of the Star Wars franchise, which have proven to one of the most loyal fan bases of any movie series ever. In the films, the vessel is commanded by Correllian fighter and hero Hans Solo alongside his first mate, the Wookiee Chewbacca. It was first seen in the original 1977 Star Wars movie and has since made appearances in four other films in the franchise. The spaceship has a distinctive shape, as the spacecraft’s creator Joe Johnston was instructed by George Lucas to design the Falcon based on a flying saucer, but Johnston wanted to create something more sophisticated. This is how the Falcon’s characteristic mandibles and asymmetrical cockpit came into being.

The 2017 release of the Ultimate Collector’s Set will feature more detail than has ever been seen in a LEGO set. For instance, the Falcon comes with removable hull plates, which uncover the incredible detailing in the main hold when taken off. Other removable and sliding features reveal the gunnery station, which has a rotating laser cannon, and the rear compartment, which houses the engine room. There’s also a new cockpit element filled with updated weapons to reflect the ship’s aesthetic from the movies that have been released since the last Millennium Falcon LEGO set was released, including Episode VII/VIII crew weapons like Han’s blaster, Rey’s small silver blaster, and Finn’s medium blaster rifle. Fans will be delighted to know that the set also includes new LEGO figures: namely Older Han Solo, Rey, and Finn, as well as old favorites like Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, and C-3PO. The kit is 21 centimeters high by 84 centimeters long by 56 centimeters wide, and it will be available for purchase directly through the LEGO site from October 1st on (though superfans recieved VIP Early Access on September 14th). The set will retail at $799.99 USD for 7,541 pieces of pure Star Wars joy.

The post Star Wars Fans Swoon Over LEGO’s New “Millennium Falcon” Kit first appeared on Dornob.

Design is about picking and choosing relevant details, and this dedicated dad did it right, emphasizing the core aspects of this Star Wars vehicle (including support struts and main weapons) in designing a bed for his Star-Wars-fan son.

This Dutilly Family creation features a rear entry accessed via an added staircase in the back (with toy storage underneath for good measure), while a window in front allows for easy peaks in and out within a broader sense of full enclosure.

Major materials are as follows: “BODY: 1/4″ Masonite, 1/2″ MDF & Plywood Circles, 1/2″ MDF detailing, 1-1/2″ PVC split down the middle. HEAD: 1X3 Framing, 1/4″ Masonite skin, 1/2″ Florist Foam Circles, Florist Foam Carving Details, PVC Cannons”

Later on, the family completed the bedroom in a Star Wars theme.

From an ABC News report:

“When the family moved into a new home after the bed’s completion, they had to cut off the bed’s front leg in order for it to fit in the bedroom. ‘It looks like the AT-AT walker is walking through the room,’ Derek Dutilly said. The new move allowed the family a chance to add more ‘Star Wars’ details to the room, including adding light saber holders and hanging the Millenium Falcon from the ceiling.”

“In addition to the removal of the bed’s front leg, the family also moved the head of the bed, built a bunk bed underneath and added some new features to the stairs to improve the look. The stairs now includes space to display toys and ‘Star Wars’ items, as well storage to hold more toys underneath them.”

“The legs of the bed are made out of plywood and Dutilly used PVC for detailing, including a few PVC pipes that stick on purpose. ‘The PVC pipes are the blasters of the AT-AT walker,’ Dutilly said, adding that the back of the bed is bolted to the wall. Derek Dutilly said one of his ‘favorite features’ of the bed is a built-in escape hatch.”

The post AT-AT Walker Star Wars Bed first appeared on Dornob.

Whether the influence was subconscious or the designer a closet Star Wars fan, it is hard not to see the iconic shape of a classic science fiction vehicle in this behemoth of a home.

Like the mobile fortress in the old movie, the front of the house slopes forward toward the street and gives it the illusion of motion. It is also built with ideas of defensible space in mind – intentionally made to look, feel and be well-protected from its surroundings.

Apollo Architects clearly focused a great deal of energy into the exterior, but the interior was not forgotten in the process. Stark, white-and-black surfaces with periodic wooden elements that highlight austere modern angles.

Despite its solid appearance, slot-shaped skylights and well-spaced windows let in light and provide views to the outside though the architectural emphasis is definitely on solids and not voids.

Think the comparison is a bit of a stretch? This would not be the first time that someone created a tribute to the Sandcrawler, indirectly or otherwise. Examples include other buildings but also art vehicles, such as this one that debuted (appropriately enough) at a desert arts festival (Burning Man).

“This urban residence is located in a residential district in downtown Sendai,” say the architects. “Constructed out of wood without the use of any pilotis or other supporting structures, the building features an upper floor that protrudes dramatically outward in order to ensure adequate parking space for two cars on a lot with restricted frontage.”

“The size of the windows and other openings on the closed facade of the building have been kept to an absolute minimum as a precaution against crime, as well as a privacy feature. In contrast, the interior of the house, which centers on the internal courtyard, is an open, generous and well-lit expanse of space. The first floor houses several small, comfortable private spaces, such as a bedroom and audio room.”

“The second floor has been conceived as a single, continuous space filled with natural light, allowing unobstructed lines of sight and free-flowing ventilation. The tatami-floored living room enjoys the ‘borrowed landscape’ (shakkei) of maple trees in the courtyard, creating a tranquil atmosphere that allows the inhabitants to forget the fact that they are in the city.”
