The ingenious Saturn Wine Glass by Christopher Yamane of Fragile Studios eliminates the risk of impossible-to-remove wine stains with a design that makes the glass virtually unspillable.

Made from a single piece of glass, the Saturn Wine Glass features a rim that prevents it from turning over if you knock into it. Yamane used traditional glass-blowing techniques to give the stemless glass its signature Saturn-like ring, folding a bubble of glass and trapping air within it.

The rim also acts as a fill line, so servings are perfect every time. It might take a while to get used to holding this glass in the palm of your hand, but it’s worth the assurance that you won’t end up with a dress covered in Shiraz.

The post Unspillable Wine Glass: When You Get Tipsy, This Cup Won’t first appeared on Dornob.

A revolutionary pair of glasses lets people who are deaf and hard of hearing put subtitles on their everyday conversations. Called XRAI Glass, the eyewear takes audio collected from the built-in microphone and converts it to text that is projected on the lenses for the wearer, effectively allowing them to read conversations in real time.

The XRAI Glass company collaborated with augmented reality firm Nreal to harness the power of their existing AR glasses and use translation software that can be downloaded onto any smartphone.

Commenting on the release of this breakthrough invention, XRAI Glass CEO Dan Scarfe says, “We are so proud of the ability this innovative technology has to enrich the lives of people who are deaf and have hearing loss, so that they can maximize potential. Whether that means being able to have a conversation while continuing to make dinner or keeping a conversation going while walking with a friend. The scale of the opportunity is huge.”

Scarfe got the inspiration for the glasses after watching his grandfather struggle to keep up with conversations at family gatherings. “There was just a little epiphany moment where I thought, ‘Hang on a second. He watches TV all the time with subtitles. Why can’t we subtitle the world?’”

The idea is already receiving rave reviews from deaf and hard of hearing advocacy groups. “This is a great example of the positive difference innovative technology can make for people who are deaf or have hearing loss,” says Mark Atkinson, CEO of RNID, a British hearing loss charity. “At RNID we are excited about the potential for technology to transform the lives of our communities. XRAI glass is intuitive and simple to use and could be a powerful tool in ensuring people with hearing loss don’t feel excluded in social settings. We support and applaud this endeavor and are keen to play our part in connecting innovators with our diverse communities.”

Steve Crump, the founder and chair of DeafKidz International, personally attests to the viability of XRAI Glass. “As a profoundly deaf person myself, I was blown away by this technology. When I tried on the glasses, I was astonished – real-time subtitles that enable you to engage and participate as never before. I see XRAI Glass as a hugely positive force, and I can’t wait to work with the team to help bring this to life.”

He adds: “To me, this technology enables me to be involved. It empowers…me to be in the conversation in the moment. I’m getting a real-time stream of subtitled information where ordinarily I might be behind. I might not quite catch everything, but this is giving me a real-time narrative which … enables me to make decisions because I know what is being said.”

The product is initially launching only in the United Kingdom, where there are more than 12 million adults affected by deafness or hearing loss. If successful, the glasses and app could have global implications, as it ‘s estimated that more than 5 percent of the world’s population, or 430 million people, suffer from disabling hearing loss, including 70 million suffering from full-blown deafness. XRAI Glass is currently working to develop software that could also translate any language.

The post AR Glasses Allow Deaf People to “See” Conversations first appeared on Dornob.

Tech design company Ampere has created the latest innovation in smart glasses: a pair of sunglasses that allows you to change the tint with the touch of a button.

Released on an Indiegogo campaign earlier this year, the “Dusk” shades are different from the decades-old Transitions lenses that change tint based on the surrounding light conditions. The new product from Ampere uses electrochromic technology (the same tech available in luxury cars to control windshield tint) to electrically manipulate the lens darkness specifically to the user’s preferences. And it works fast, with the lenses taking just 0.1 seconds to adapt to the preferred hue.

The tint level can be customized between 3 and 35 percent, and preferred settings can be saved on the company app. When users are far from their phones, the glasses have manual touch controls on the left-hand side that can adjust between three tint levels. Another option includes setting the controls to have the lenses alter automatically with changes in ambient light readings.

Being smart glasses, Dusk also includes an open-ear audio system that lets users receive phone calls or listen to music on the go. The speakers are discreetly hidden in the frame earpieces and allow for a crystal-clear audio experience even while keeping the noise inaudible to those around you.

Compatible with iPhones running iOS 14 and Android 12 models, the embedded microphone and button on the right side of the Dusk frame makes it possible to quiz Siri or Google Assistant with voice commands and gives users the hands-free ability to answer calls or skip songs on their playlist.

Even better, these glasses have the bonus of actually looking good. Designed after the classic Ray-Ban wayfarer style, the matte black frames are sleek and unisex. Dusk is also lightweight (measuring just under one ounce), making each pair comfortable enough for all-day use.

For eye safety, the sunglasses are polarized and block 100 percent of harmful UVA and UVB rays. Additionally, with all the included smart tech, Ampere took care to make their product waterproof (IP65 waterproof rating) to be wearable around the pool or on the lake.

Dusk glasses also feature some helpful accessories. For an extra $50, users can purchase a protective case that also acts a charger when out and about. When fully charged, the shades will provide seven days of paired tint adjustment time and four hours of active listening time. The carrying case also incorporates a space for an Apple Air Tag to track the glasses via Bluetooth if and when they get misplaced.

The sunglasses went on presale at a discounted price of $189 and are currently scheduled to ship in October 2021. The company’s smart changing lenses concept was very popular on Indiegogo, raising over $430,000 from almost 1,600 backers. The campaign was so successful, in fact, that two other options were unlocked: a pair with mirrored lenses, and an indoor Dusk frame to block that pesky blue light from phones and other screens.

Delaware-based Ampere specializes in making “fun, one-of-a-kind award-winning gadgets” to improve life for their customers. Their other offerings include a foldable charging cube, a hydropower shower speaker, and a UV sanitizing wireless cell phone charger.

The post Dusk: Smart Sunglasses Let You Adjust the Tint with Your Phone first appeared on Dornob.

One of the Center for Disease Control’s main coronavirus prevention tips is to avoid touching your face. And honestly, it sounds easy enough. Just stop doing it, right? Not really. The average person touches their face 23 times per hour, and it’s really hard to interrupt an action we take without even realizing we’re doing it. Seriously, try it for an hour and see how long you can go before you reflexively reach up to wipe your eye, rest your chin on your hand, tap your lips in thought, or scratch an itch. Training yourself not to do something that’s almost as automatic as breathing is much easier said than done.

Wearing a plastic face shield is an easy way to stop this habit in its tracks, but most of the ones you’ll find for sale at your local drugstore or on Amazon are bulky, uncomfortable, and too hazy to see through. A different version aims to be as comfortable as wearing glasses while offering protection from potentially infectious droplets and interrupting mindless face touching.

“Blocc” covers all the major avenues for infection on your face, working as a barrier when you reach for them. Unlike a conventional face shield, which uses foam and a headband to cling to your face, Blocc rests on your ears and nose. It doesn’t quite extend all the way past the chin, but its bubble-like shape makes that unnecessary.

It might seem like a face shield worn like glasses would make it impossible to actually wear glasses underneath it, but the design actually leaves plenty of room for most frames. Just remove the Blocc’s nose rest to accommodate them. The ergonomic shape also makes it easy to wear when running or riding a bike.

3D printed out of clear polycarbonate, Blocc is designed for everyday use by the public, not for healthcare or laboratory settings. It’s easy to wash with soap and water so you can use it over and over again. Though it’s no replacement for a mask, it’s a great supplement, especially for people who have to interface with the public for work and need some extra protection.

The face shield’s creators explain that “our team is based in South Korea — one of the first countries to be hit hard by the pandemic. We often noticed people wearing masks and habitually touching their face out in public. After looking into this further, we found that the average person subconsciously touches their face 23 times an hour (source: https://bit.ly/2APII4I) and that this is an innate habit very difficult to break. Therefore, it only seemed logical for us to create a face shield that would block (hence, the product name) the hand from touching the face.”

“We noticed that some people had already been using them, but none of them seemed to look comfortable or well-designed. This is why we decided to make one ourselves — one designed for the average person to wear in public without feeling embarrassed or uncomfortable. Our sincere hope is that Blocc will help you become wary of your face-touching habit. With your help, we can make Blocc a reality.”

Blocc raised nearly 500 times its initial goal of $5,000 on Kickstarter, and it’s now available for pre-sale on Indiegogo. You can get one for $27, or a two pack for $52.

The post Blocc: A Streamlined Face Shield You Wear Like Glasses first appeared on Dornob.

Pull the World Wide Web right out of your electronic device’s screen and into your physical environment with a new set of augmented reality goggles from Magic Leap. After six years of research and development, this long-promised product is finally on its way, and considering how cool its effects look, it’s safe to say the delay is forgivable.

The “Magic Leap One” headset uses light-field technology to project realistic animated 3D imagery onto the user’s retinas, blurring the lines between what’s real and what isn’t. A handheld controller lets you navigate the augmented reality world, pulling up menus and options as you go.

Though not exactly fashionable or unobtrusive, the headset is lightweight, taking the form of goggles instead of the bulky helmet-style viewer that many have come to associate with AR technology (and do we really expect these things to be fashionable?).

You strap a circular computer module to your hip, which in turn plugs into the goggles. In addition to the remote, the system can be controlled using voice commands, gestures, eye-tracking, and head pose input. Magic Leap says users will even be able to purchase prescription lenses for the headset, answering a crucial question for those of us that need a little vision enhancement.

The Magic Leap One is currently being billed as a “Creator Edition” designed specifically for developers. The company has yet to release any details on pricing, but they say the headset will begin shipping in 2018. A consumer version probably isn’t too far behind. They’re careful to note that they’re still working on the final version and that “the product is continually dancing and may be different at time of shipment.”

So how does it work? According to Magic Leap, the headset’s primary feature is its “Digital Lightfield,” which consists of photonics that generate digital light at different depths to blend with natural light, making digital objects look more realistic in the user’s environment. It’s a way to help our brains process digital objects the same way we do real-world ones, so we can immerse ourselves in these augmented environments for longer periods of time without strain.

A suite of built-in sensors detect surfaces, planes, and objects in your surroundings so they can be digitally recreated and blended with virtual elements. Using room-mapping technology, the AR system determines the dimensions and placement of rooms and the objects they contain, so when you place a digital object somewhere, it’ll stay put. For example, you could place a virtual television on the wall over your fireplace or a weather display in a corner of the room.

The “Soundfield Audio” feature mimics the real world to account for the location that a sound is coming from, “meaning you’ll know how close a virtual T-Rex is as it stomps up behind you.” The headset’s high-powered processing unit provides gaming-quality graphics, and its next-generation interface eliminates “outdated” point-and-click input systems in favor of more natural and intuitive options.

The developer release will allow people working in fields like gaming to produce content that specifically makes use of the Magic Leap One system. The possibilities feel virtually endless, offering developers “a sandbox without boundaries (or real sand).”

“Great games transport us to different worlds. But what happens when games live in ours? Now, gameplay and characters finally come to you,” says the company. “Where will you take them?”

While they may be the first to pull off a wide release, Magic Leap isn’t the only company working on exciting AR technology. It’s likely that 2018 will bring announcements from companies like Google and Apple regarding products with similar capabilities.

The post Magic Leap One: Are These Goggles the Future of AR? first appeared on Dornob.

Remember how confident Google was that everyone was going to want to wear its smart glasses? The tech giant’s vision of wearable augmented reality devices hasn’t quite come to fruition. At least, not yet. There are a lot of factors that went into the failure of Google Glass, not the least of which is the fact that they just didn’t seem to do anything our less expensive smart phones can’t already achieve. But more than that, they were ugly.

Put on a pair of Google Glasses, and you’re broadcasting to the world that you have a camera aimed at everyone, and you may or may not be recording them at any given moment. The ultimate effect was more “creepy dweeb” than “aspirational innovator.” But augmented reality glasses are probably in our future whether we’re concerned about privacy or not, and other manufacturers are learning from Google’s mistakes.

Take “Norm Glasses,” for example. Created by the startup Human Capable, Inc., these smart glasses offer a host of functions, and they’re far less conspicuous. Designed like a fairly normal pair of mirrored sunglasses, “Norm” is equipped with a wearable mini-computer, camera, speakers and a “heads-up display” (HUD) that can display information like text messages, the time, the weather or navigational directions in your field of view.

Taking photos or videos with Norm Glasses is a lot less conspicuous than whipping out your phone, which some people might find convenient and others concerning. You can also use them to surreptitiously scan barcodes to find online reviews of products or make price comparisons, if you’re the kind of person who likes to go into a brick-and-mortar store to check things out in person and then find them cheaper on Amazon.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEcWMnQXdjo

The features don’t stop there.

“All components are embedded discreetly inside the frame, people around you won’t be able to tell any technology is present. Norm Glasses can be hung on your shirt or blouse when not in use, just like normal sunglasses. The sleek design also folds up into a standard eyeglass case.”

“With an Android-based system, Norm’s functionalities can be extended with apps in the same way as on smartphones. In addition, Norm supports integration with voice platforms such as Alexa — their functionalities are available to you anywhere you go.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FwGHq6pce4

The lenses come in tinted, transition, polarized or clear varieties, with or without a prescription. One would imagine that the clear prescription lenses would be the most useful, so people don’t wonder why you’re always wearing sunglasses indoors.

When the creators set out to crowdfund production costs for Norm on Kickstarter, they smashed their goals, with nearly 2,000 backers pledging over $590,000 to bring the project to life. The Norm Glasses are now available for pre-order on IndieGoGo with shipping expected to start in April 2020. The retail price will be $449.

If you’d rather wait for a new and improved iteration of Google Glass and you’re willing to pay a premium, you’re in luck. Google seems to have learned from its mistakes, too, and its new frames are a lot more — well — normal-looking.

With the new school year on the horizon, students are slowly starting to dust off their laptops and anticipate new challenges. But aside from more powerful, faster, and lighter portable PCs out there, there are some other really cool new gadgets that make learning easier and more fun.

Livescribe 2GB Echo Smartpen

Think your head will explode trying to catch every word of a lecture? With this nifty tool, you can rest easy knowing you won’t miss a thing. The Echo Smartpen records everything you hear and write and automatically saves it to your computer. It also comes complete with software for Mac or Windows, a 50-page Starter Notebook, two ink cartridges, and a micro USB cable to transfer data and keep your pen charged. The pen is so compact (6.8 inches long) it fits in your pocket, so you’ll have no problem taking it around and recharging in between classes.

Astrohaus Freewrite

If you enjoy taking notes but hate the bulk of a tablet, Freewrite is the tool for you. It’s a word processor that connects with the Cloud, so whatever you type is automatically saved. Whether you’re taking notes in Psych 101 or composing iambic pentameter for poetry class, this tool allows you to write on with the confidence that nothing will be lost. The Freewrite’s advanced e-ink screen is clear even on sunny days, too, so you can relax on the beach while you compose if you so please. The battery life lasts for over a week with regular use, so there’s no need to constantly recharge either.

ThirdEye Gen X1 Smart Glasses

Many lecture halls are massive, so if you’re not in the front few rows, it’s difficult to see formulas on the board or other visual aids used by educators. Slip on a pair of these Smart Glasses, and you’re guaranteed to have the best view in the room. These spectacles transform your view to one comparable to viewing a 90-inch screen from a distance of 10 feet, with a whopping 13 megapixels making sure that everything is clear as crystal. If necessary, the X1’s photochromatic lenses can also be replaced with prescription ones.

Garmin vívosmart 4

No matter how many gadgets and tools you bring to a classroom, you always have to be of sound mind and body to maximize learning. vívosmart helps keep you on track. Besides offering standard info like daily steps and exercise, notifying you of medication and supplement schedules, and tracking the number of calories you’ve burned, the device also keeps track of your sleep quality, stress levels, and pulse oxygenation. Before you head out the door for an all-night session, the compact vívosmart can tell you if it might be better to chill and relax at home.

Of course, there’s more to education than writing and listening, especially if your passion is math, science, or engineering. The Plus CE graphing calculator displays connections between data, equations, and graphs in full color and includes graph lines for easy reading. The 2019 model is also 30-percent thinner and lighter than past versions, and is ideal for Use for Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II, Trigonometry, Statistics, Business & Finance, Biology, Chemistry, Geometry, Precalculus, College Math, and Linear Algebra. Last but certainly not least, the TI-84 is also approved for IB exams, AP exams that permit graphing calculators, and the PSAT, SAT, and ACT college entrance exams.

Unlike food, which comes in many consistencies, liquid is relatively uniform. But somehow, we’ve deemed it necessary to have at least a half-dozen different kinds of glassware in our cabinets, taking up precious space. Isn’t there a more efficient system that could cut back on all the clutter?
Versatile, universal glassware that adapts to the type of beverage you’re drinking might be the answer. For example, this multipurpose glassware design plays to different kinds of Connoisseur without compromising its essential shape or requiring that you store glassware for every occasion.

Simply want water? No stem or attachment is required for this most basic, day-to-day function. Shifting to a nice Malbec or fruity Rosé? A simple slender neck and base slot in, elegantly extending the core cup unit to make it a wine glass. Both actually look like modern drinking glasses you would want to buy separately – even if they didn’t offer these cool multifunctional shape-shifting capabilities.

For cognac drinkers, an angled base tilts the tableware to let it breath better – turning it into an effective side-tilted snifter. A baseless champagne stem is perfect for toasting-oriented, mobility-focused celebrations, essentially forcing you to keep it in your hand (as setting down your drink at the wrong time can mean missing the key toasts.)
With the cupboard space-saving “One Glass 4 Every Drink” concept design, designer Sven Milcent and Utopik Design Lab have arguably solved a basic drinkware problem, though whether or not it would work well in practice depends entirely on the connections – the interchangeable pieces are the physical and conceptual lynchpins that will make or break these (literally) in real life. Whether we’ll get a chance to ever find out by testing them ourselves remains to be seen, but clearly there’s a market for such a product.

The post 4 in 1: Glassware for Any Beverage first appeared on Dornob.

Technology pervades every corner of our lives in today’s modern age. From our phones and computers to home audio systems activated at the touch of a button or merely by the sound of one’s voice, it’s practically impossible to escape the reach of 21st-century amenities.

The newfound convenience of wearable technology means you can access your emails and messages straight from your watch or glasses, as well as manage your calendar and track your biometrics. The Google Glass tried to tap into the smartglasses market a number of years ago, but it never really took off — perhaps due in part to its aesthetic, perhaps due to its functionality. Now there’s a new pair of glasses on the market that not only looks amazing, but also performs a number of tasks that will please any discerning audiophile.

Audiovisual giant Bose has released two pairs of Bose Frames in hopes of revolutionizing sound and vision. These stylish sunglasses, which are available in two classic shapes (square and round), have been designed to combine protective wearability and high-definition audio reproduction. The glasses bring the latter component to the table via a built-in audio system in its arms, which itself is still small enough to keep their total weight at just 45 grams. The system works like pair of wireless headphones, transmitting sound over the ear as opposed to into it while simultaneously performing some functions of a cell phone, allowing users to make and receive calls, stream music, and easily access information.

Along with this subtle audio immersion, wearers can also speak into a tiny microphone located in the right temple of the glasses. This mic allows them to command Siri and Google Assistant with ease. It also allows the glasses to be voice-controlled, through which the wearer can order the stopping, playing, and skipping of songs without having to use their hands.

Not only do the Bose Frames offer consumers the most up-to-date audio technology, but they also boast a timeless design that provides an unparalleled level of visual protection. The glasses are designed with tinted lenses that keep up to 99 percent of UV rays away from the eyes, while their hinges give off a flash of glamour with their elegant gold plating. The edges of the frames have been shaped to create a smooth silhouette and bear a soft matte finish.

As if all that wasn’t enough, the glasses are also connected to Bose AR, the company’s exclusive augmented reality platform. GPS tracks your movements and location to help you feel totally immersed in the soundtrack of your life. The frames are charged using a plug-in lithium battery, which runs for around three-and-a-half hours and takes about two to fully charge. Unfortunately, prospective wearers will have to wait until after Christmas to purchase these amazing sunglasses, as they won’t be available to buy until February 2019 — but they are already available for pre-order.

The post Bose Frames: The Ultimate Intersection of Fashion and Technology first appeared on Dornob.

Just a year ago, Snapchat founders Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy rang the bell at the New York Stock Exchange, surrounded by decorations in their company’s signature shade of yellow. Snap went public for the first time that day, with an impressive valuation of $24 billion and shares spiking by as much as 41 percent above the company’s initial $17 offer price. It seemed like the app used by 178 million people around the world was soaring toward Facebook-like echelons of success. Today, however, Snap stock is down by over 43 percent. On top of that, the company has lost nearly $40 million on what turned out to be a misguided business decision: its camera-equipped Spectacles.

https://www.youtube.com/embed/yjPWlb8LnSo?list=PLCNs_Pv3evLQ6q5UZTaKrUHDB_lv-kEXX

“We were very excited about Spectacles and by the initial reception, and because we were so excited I guess we made the wrong decision,” said Spiegel in a November 2017 earnings call. “We were balancing the trade-off with unit economics, of course, that come with hardware, but ultimately we made the wrong decision based on the early traction and ordered a lot of long-lead time parts, and ultimately weren’t able to sell as many Spectacles as we thought we’d be able to based on the early adoption.”

Spectacles, Snap’s first foray into hardware, debuted in the fall of 2016 as the company sought to rebrand itself as not an app creator, but a camera maker. The company expected the glasses to be a hit and strategically placed them in vending machines in cities like San Francisco before making them available to the general public online for $130 each. But sales were surprisingly sluggish, and by October 2017, Snap was stuck with hundreds of thousands of unsold pairs. Spiegel says that they only managed to sell about 150,000 — a figure that represents a mere 0.8 percent of Snapchat’s total userbase.

The failure of Spectacles isn’t Snap’s only problem. For a while, Snapchat’s photo and video sharing platform was completely unique, only displaying each “snap” temporarily to create a more ephemeral social media experience. Facebook saw its potential and offered to buy the budding brand for $3 billion. When Snap turned them down, Facebook simply shrugged and added the same functionality to its Instagram property. Facebook even copied Snapchat’s filters (playful modifications overlaid atop photos and videos) and rebranded them as “lenses.”

Data for the next quarter revealed that the number of new daily Snapchat users had fallen by two-thirds, and it’s been in a kind of downward spiral ever since. In fact, the users that are still active on Snapchat are primarily using it to just message each other directly.

There’s also the fact that despite its increasing revenue, Snap is spending significantly more money than it’s taking in. The company lost $443 million last year, partially because it locked itself into expensive cloud contracts with Google and Amazon in hopes of drastically boosting user growth (something that has yet to actually happen). In an attempt to protect its new features from the likes of Facebook, Snap has also adopted a highly secretive company culture, warning employees that they could face jail time for leaking information. Of course, the leaks are still coming. And where other companies involve their investors and advertisers in their plans, Snapchat remains tight-lipped. None of this has left investors particularly excited about its future.

Do you still use Snapchat, or have you gotten bored with it? Would you ever wear Snap’s Spectacles?

The post Future So Dim, You Don’t Need Shades: Snapchat Loses $40 Million on Spectacles first appeared on Dornob.

EnChroma Labs, a company based in Berkeley, California, develops everyday sunglasses for people with a red-green color deficiency — a common type of color blindness. Don McPherson, one of EnChroma’s two founders, originally engineered the eyewear for doctors to use as protection while performing laser surgery, embedding rare earth iron into the glasses to absorb any wavelengths that might harm the human eye. Surgeons, astonished by the protection and saturated colors that the glasses offered them, quickly started using them outside of the hospital. Those who didn’t know how color blind they actually were could scarcely believe the effect the lenses had on their vision. Shortly after this discovery, McPherson re-constructed his creation to serve a broader purpose and help individuals affected by the inability to distinguish certain hues from one another.

McPherson started off the EnChroma journey by researching exactly what color blindness, also known as color vision deficiency, entailed. He found that color blindness was an inherited condition that occurred when a pair of eyes were unable to see colors in normal light and that it resulted from an absence of color-sensitive photopigments in the cone cells of the retina (the nerve layer at the back of the eye). The human body requires several functioning genes to produce photopigments, and if any of those genes are damaged or abnormal, the result is often color blindness. The effects of vision deficiency can be mild, moderate, or severe depending on the extent of the damage, starting with red-green, followed by blue-yellow, and leading all the way up to complete color blindness, which itself has been found to be quite rare.

The company’s eyewear cannot fix everyone’s color blindness, but it is able to treat 80 percent of the people who come to them with the most common form of vision deficiency, red-green color blindness. The remaining 20 percent are missing an entirely different class of photopigments — either blue or yellow.

McPherson and Co-Founder Andrew Schmeder were able to treat so many people suffering from this condition by targeting certain sets of photopigments. More specifically, they created a method called “multinotch” filtering, cutting out sharp wavelengths of light to enhance specific colors. EnChroma lenses separate the overlapping red and green cones, improving the vision of those who have difficulty seeing reds and greens.

Founded in December 2010, EnChroma initially only offered traditional outdoor eyewear. Scanning their site today, you’ll see you can choose between outdoor, indoor, speciality, and even children’s glasses. If you aren’t sure whether the $269 to $429 price range is for you, you can always take the company’s online test at home to get a better sense of how severe your color blindness is. “Normal color vision” is just one of eight results you can receive after completing the test.

Although correcting color blindness is the main purpose of these glasses, there are still some people with normal color vision that may want to purchase a pair. The website states that when an individual with zero vision deficiencies wears the glasses, they experience a “color boost” effect, in which colors appear to “pop” with a super-ordinary vibrance. This effect, officially called chromatic contrast enhancement, is exactly how EnChroma helps those with color blindness.

While it may be an adventitious discovery, McPherson notes that the success EnChroma has endured is based on years of rigorous science. The creators are consistently experimenting with new procedures in hopes of improving their product. “It’s the same every time, they get quiet, and then it’ll all start flooding in, and I love that moment, I can watch it a thousand times,” he explains. EnChroma is a prime example of how hard work goes a long way — especially when it fulfills you on a personal level.

The post Color-Correcting Sunglasses Will Make You Forget You’re Color Blind first appeared on Dornob.

A proper whiskey-tasting glass is designed to direct the aromas up to your nose, since scent is such an integral part of appreciating the unique flavors of various varieties. Conventional whiskey tasting glassware narrows toward the top to hold in the scent, but can a few tweaks make the tasting process even more enjoyable? With a shape reminiscent of an oil lantern, this ‘whiskey tasting set’ by French designer Nicolas Brouillac adds a few extra features.

“The whiskey glass from Les impitoyables is designed to enhance all whiskeys and eaux-de-vie, such as Cognac and Armagnac,” says the designer. “With a distinctive wide bowl, this technical class will reveal the subtleties in the whisky, bringing out the aromas for an utterly indulgent tasting.”

The nose is just as narrow as those on most whiskey tasting glasses, but the trick to this glass is in both its metal base and a central dome that distributes the liquor in a circular shape within the bowl. Pour only enough whiskey in the glass to remain below the level of the dome, which divides the liquor to prevent an overpowering elevation of alcohol vapors to the nose.

The metal base will chill the whiskey for at least thirty minutes without watering it down, eliminating the need for ice. You just pop it into the freezer for a few hours before use.

If you’ve ever experienced the utter dismay of watching a glass of red wine spill all over your fancy party clothes or, even worse, your light-colored carpet, the Saturn wine glass will seem like a miracle of design. The glass from Super Duper Studio is futuristic looking and can possibly save you from future wine stain disasters.

The stemless glass has a flat bottom, allowing it to sit upright on a table. But just above the base, it flares out a little to form an even wider second base. That means that, should your obnoxious uncle fling his arm a little too far when telling his latest fishing story, the glass will weeble and wobble and even spin around a bit, but it won’t spill the wine inside. (Sharp-eyed readers will notice that the design has undergone a dramatic change from its previous iteration.)

Of course, if you’re really dedicated to spilling the wine, if the glass is hit hard enough to go flying, or if it’s filled too full, wine will inevitably slosh out. But in normal circumstances, like someone clumsily backing into a table, the space-age design is stable enough to save your white tablecloth. Even better, they stack easily so cleaning up after a party is simple.

Wine afficionados will undoubtedly notice that the lack of a stem and the shape of the glass will alter the optimal taste of the wine. Casual wine drinkers probably won’t notice a difference, though. Each glass is hand-made through a careful and rather exhaustive process, and they’re priced accordingly at $52 each. A set of $52 wine glasses will undoubtedly cost less than replacing a wine-stained carpet, though.

“The Saturn Glass is the original spill proof wine glass. The first of its kind, the stemless Saturn Glass’s contemporary design is a mix of Italian and Scandinavian glass blowing traditions which feels at home both while cosying up after work, or while hosting formal guests. “

The post Saturn: Stylish Spill-Proof Wine Glass first appeared on Dornob.

He created the sugar glasses with melted sugar through a process of rotational molding.

The glasses are meant to be used at one-time events such as cocktail parties and art openings. They are ephemeral in nature and, if not used, will melt away in a few days. They are certainly not practical for home use, but they are a lovely and unexpected departure from traditional glassware for special events.

Laposse created a signature cocktail exclusively for use with his delicate-looking sugar glasses. The cocktail is more or less a mojito that is missing the soda and sugar – the cocktail’s sweetness comes from the glass itself.

As you are enjoying the cocktail, you swirl the drink around in the cup, dissolving the sugar into the liquid little by little. When the cocktail is gone, the glass becomes a lollipop that you can eat with all of the joy you did as a child.

The sugar glasses went through several versions before Laposse settled on the final design. He experimented with mesh supports and lollipop sticks before settling on an all-sugar version.

The final result is a dissolving glass that is equal parts useful and beautiful. The edible glasses look like exquisite art glass, complete with swirled colors and tiny bubbles.

The post Sweet Swigs: Edible Sugar Glasses Look Like Functional Art first appeared on Dornob.

It is tempting to put champagne flutes and brandy snifters in the dishwasher but daunting as well - broken glass, swirled around by soapy water, is no fun at all to try and clean up ... nor is the prospect of swallowing some should you mess a shard or two. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaQWXqGe4_g

It is tempting to put champagne flutes and brandy snifters in the dishwasher but daunting as well – broken glass, swirled around by soapy water, is no fun at all to try and clean up … nor is the prospect of swallowing some should you mess a shard or two.

Thus, this simple tether by Gary Rose, available at Quirky. A flexible synthetic tube slots down onto a prong in your standard dish-washing machine, then snaps gently around the stem of your glass.

And voila: no more worrying whether your stemware will survive the next wash and rinse cycle. Not a bad gadget for frequent hosts.

The post Stemware Saver: Tethers Protect Wine Glasses in Washers first appeared on Dornob.
