We all have good intentions when we fill our fridges with an abundance of healthy produce. We’ll definitely eat it within just a few days, we tell ourselves. But when we wait too long, the inevitable occurs. The kale starts to wilt. The carrots go soft. The berries are covered in mold. What if you could buy a small air purifier that lived inside your refrigerator, reducing the bacterial load to keep your food fresh longer? Then you might actually get to make that antioxidant-rich spa salad instead of having to throw the ingredients away. Vitesy’s “Shelfy” is a device that claims to do just that.

Currently wrapping up a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, the Shelfy sort of looks like a misplaced Apple device. It’s a minimalist white pod that you tuck onto one of your refrigerator shelves to let it do its magic. Taking up less space than a gallon of milk, the Shelfy extends shelf life up to 12 days, reduces bad odors by 80 percent, and results in up to 10 times less bacterial load inside the refrigerator.

To use it, you just select the mode you want (eco, standard, or boost); place it in the fridge wherever it fits best, including in a drawer or door; and reap the benefits. Shelfy’s makers claim the device can keep some vegetables like zucchini good for as long as 22 days, and extend the lives of fast-rotting foods like strawberries by up to a week.

Food waste is a major contributor to environmental crises like climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, requiring tons of resources and land to grow food that people don’t end up eating (and emitting methane gases when it rots). A single family spends an average of almost $2,000 a year on food that they end up throwing away. Shelfy cites studies that show one out of every two refrigerators has an above-average proliferation of mold and bacteria, contributing to the problem.

The Shelfy uses an advanced ceramic filter, a silent fan, and a battery to take in air inside the refrigerator through mechanical ventilation, passing it through a photocatalytic filter that destroys pollutants. After a while, it’ll notify you that it’s time to remove the filter and wash it under running water, or charge it via a USB-C plug. You can control it with the Vitesy Hub app and connect it to Amazon Alexa and Google Home via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The Shelfy also monitors your refrigerator’s energy consumption based on how many times you open the door.

The designers explain that they “conducted research at CSI SpA – FPM Laboratory (Food Packaging Materials), an Italian and European technological hub with a team of about 400 experts including engineers, physicists, chemists, and microbiologists who have made quality, safety, and sustainability the backbone of their professional role. They’re recognized as a center of excellence, especially for companies in the food, packaging, construction, and automotive sectors, in which every day, for more than 25 years, they have been working to enhance quality companies and protect the market.”

“Shelfy uses an innovative and sustainable nanomaterial-based photocatalytic technology since the filter doesn’t need to be replaced, just washed under running water. Photocatalysis is a safe chemical reaction that absorbs air pollutants and turns them into harmless elements. The use of this technology guarantees safety, better performance, and less consumption. In this way, we make Vitesy technology sustainable and effective.”

If you missed the Shelfy’s Kickstarter campaign, you’ll be able to pick one up soon for the retail price of €169 (about $175).

The post Fight Food Waste in Your Fridge with the Shelfy Smart Purifier first appeared on Dornob.

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of designing or renovating a kitchen and overlook the details that really matter. Before you spend your hard-earned money on features you’ll regret, consider these six common kitchen design mistakes that could make your kitchen harder to use, clean, and enjoy. After all, if your kitchen’s functionality is impaired, you’ll just end up ordering a lot more take-out – and then what’s the point of putting so much time and effort into it?

Lack of Adequate Storage

Image via Apartment Therapy

Open shelving is all the rage right now, and it’s easy to see why. Upper cabinets can dominate the space, especially if they’re a dark color, while simple shelves contribute to an airier feel. But keep in mind the cardinal rule of well-organized interiors: there should always be a home for everything. Otherwise, you’ll just end up with all those extra dishes, glasses, cooking implements, and baking ingredients cluttering your countertops. If you take away storage on the wall, add it back somewhere else.

Neglecting a Good Workflow

Image via Cooksmarts

Pay attention to how you actually move through your kitchen while using it. Is there a place to set hot things down beside the stove? Is there a clear path from the stove to the sink to the fridge? Can people pass through without bumping into open doors, a too-large island, or other obstacles? It’s harder to engineer a good workflow when your kitchen is small, but there are always workarounds, like slide-out surfaces, pocket doors, and counter-depth appliances.

Choosing Hard-to-Clean Materials

Image via Fantastic Frank

Sure, tile counters can be beautiful. But have you ever had to clean greasy sludge out of grout? The same goes for real wood floors and unfinished wood cabinets, both of which can discolor quickly from oily splashes and spills. Before you choose those porous countertops or stainless appliances that show every single fingerprint, think about how (and how often) you’ll be cleaning their surfaces. You might find that alternative materials suddenly seem more appealing.

Indulging in Too Many Trends

Image via HGTV

Two-toned painted cabinets, mix-and-match hardware, and speckled granite are three trends that were majorly popular just a few years ago, but all of them are now on their way out. Sorry, Joanna Gaines, but shiplap is probably next. When you’re designing your kitchen, avoid including too many things you’d see on a reality TV home makeover show, because there’s good chance they’ll look dated in the very near future. If you love a certain trend too much to pass it up, use it for something that can be switched out easily when you feel like making another change.

Going Hard on Amateur Projects

Image via Lovely Etc

You watched all the YouTube videos. You memorized every second of that TikTok tutorial. Great. You can probably handle a lot of DIY projects and save money in the process. Just make sure you really know what you’re doing, and don’t skip any steps. Proper planning and prep is crucial. For instance, if you’re looking to paint your cabinets, don’t forget to degrease, sand, and prime them first, or they’ll start to bubble and peel in a matter of months.

Overspending on the Wrong Stuff

Image via Viking

It can be tempting to design for other people’s impressions, imagining what they’ll think when they walk in. But your kitchen is for you, and it should match your lifestyle. If you really don’t need a top-of-the-line gas range, those thousands could go toward items that will actually make your life easier, like cabinet shelves that slide out so you don’t have to crawl inside looking for that one muffin tin.

The post Don’t Make These 6 Major Kitchen Design Mistakes first appeared on Dornob.

It’s January, and of course, that means many of us are scrambling to get back on top of our health and fitness goals after a few too many holiday indulgences. If you’ve made a resolution to cook healthier in the new year, a few strategic kitchen design tweaks can go a long way toward creating a space that encourages healthy eating. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Spacious Island

Many kitchens, especially in older homes, just don’t have enough counter space. And let’s be honest — it’s hard to devote a lot of time and energy to healthy home cooking when you feel cramped. If possible, add a central island, even if it’s just a compact butcher block surface on wheels that gets tucked away when not in use. Get some inspiration for small spaces at Apartment Therapy.

Convenient Chopping Station

Healthy cooking requires a lot of fruit and vegetable chopping. Make this process as easy and convenient as possible by setting up a chopping station with a large cutting board, sharp knives within reach, and your trash and compost bins as close by as possible.

Water Filter

Easy access to fresh, great-tasting water makes it a lot easier to stick to your daily hydration goals. If your fridge doesn’t have a built-in water dispenser, consider adding a built-in filter to your faucet or using a filtering pitcher.

Healthy Items at Eye Level

On your counter or open shelving, arrange healthy food items right where you’ll see them every day. That might include fresh potted herbs, produce in bowls or baskets, and dry staples like brown rice, beans, quinoa, and nuts in clear jars. That way, you’ll feel inspired by these ingredients every time you enter your kitchen. (Image via Eat This, Not That)

Plenty of Storage Space

Adequate storage is essential to a functional kitchen, both to keep the counters clear and ready for use and to hide away less-healthy items you might otherwise find too tempting. Whether it’s the kids’ snacks or your cookie baking supplies, these items are best kept in a high cabinet so they’re not the first things you see when you go looking for a snack or a meal idea.

Lots of Room in the Refrigerator

It’s hard to eat healthy when you don’t have enough space to store fresh foods, especially greens and other items that need to be tucked into a drawer to stay crisp. If a large refrigerator fits your kitchen and your budget, great. If not, see if you can clear out some unnecessary condiments and add extra produce-saver bins, like this set of stackable containers from Amazon.

Magnetic Whiteboard or Chalkboard

Even the most die-hard health nuts occasionally let food go bad in the fridge. To stay on top of what needs to be eaten ASAP and inspire ideas for healthy recipes, keep an inventory of the most perishable foods in your fridge written on a whiteboard or chalkboard, either on or beside the fridge. This is also a great place to write your grocery list and have family members write their own meal requests. A big magnetic dry-erase whiteboard sheet is fast, easy, and cheap. (Image via No Ordinary Homestead)

A Bright, Open Feeling

You might have to get creative in smaller kitchens or rentals, but natural light (or a good facsimile) and connection with the spaces where your family hangs out can be a big motivator to spend more time cooking. Consider switching out any heavy curtains or opaque blinds with lighter, sheerer materials that let lots of light into the room. Eliminate obstacles between the kitchen and living rooms if you can, too, or at least tuck some bar stools under the island or a small table in the corner so you can chat with a loved one while you work.

Little Extras That Make You Happy

Think about what might make you want to linger in your kitchen a little longer. A bluetooth speaker, so you can play music or podcasts while you cook? An under-cabinet iPad mount? There’s no shame in a kitchen TV, either, if that’s what works for you. Similarly, if standing for long periods is hard for you, an anti-fatigue floor mat will go a long way toward making you more comfortable.

The kitchen is the heart of the modern home in 2020, but it hasn’t always been that way. In fact, early homes had no real designated space for cooking and eating, with families relying on nothing more than a table near the fire. Then, with the introduction of modern appliances like the refrigerator, the world saw the need for personal spaces where food could be cooked, eaten, and stored all at once.

Throughout it all, kitchen design has evolved based on trends and needs. What once was a rustic and functional part of the home, is now a vital space for entertaining, gathering, and food exploration. Of course, other rooms in the home have also undergone changes with the introduction of things like indoor plumbing. But the kitchen has perhaps seen the longest list of innovations in the form of appliances, structural requirements, and interior design.

Interested in tracking this unique evolution, the creative team at HomeAdvisor recently did a deep dive into the past 500 years of kitchen design. They then put together a digital compilation of all the changes they observed over that time.

For accuracy, the HomeAdvisor team worked with noted historians Sara Pennell, Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Greenwich and author of The Birth of the English Kitchen, and Nancy Carlisle, Senior Curator of Collections at Historic New England. They then began with a kitchen in England circa 1520, moving to America as the new world evolved and bringing the interiors all the way into modern times.

The first example is a 16th-century Tudor manor kitchen (1520-1620), whose cold stone walls are counterbalanced by the warmth of the multifunctional fireplace. Cast iron frying pans and a quintessential cauldron above the fire show the nature of cooking during these times, while ceramic pots, the primary means of storage then, line the shelves. Nearby, a wooden trough functions as a bread-making station.

Next, the 17th-century Late Stuart-era kitchen (1680-1720) boasts improvements in overhead candle lighting, storage, and display options. Teacups grace the space as afternoon tea becomes more common, and a cast iron coal gate makes the hearth more efficient to use. Another new device called a mechanical roasting jack was set up with a series of pulleys and weights that would automatically turn the spit inside the hearth, freeing up the cook for other tasks.

With the 18th-century Colonial Williamsburg kitchen (1720-1780) comes another light fixture upgrade and the advent of tile flooring, along with newer hearth features such as a swinging iron crane used for supporting Dutch ovens and other cookware.

The 19th-century Victorian-era kitchen (1870s) features the very obvious addition of modern cabinetry used for storing food and other cooking implements. Another innovation is the wood or coal-burning stove as a replacement to the traditional hearth. Not only is this form of cooking infinitely more efficient, but it also spares the cook from stooping over the fire. The kitchen sink was another enhancement of the century, although it still wasn’t the critical component it is today. Ceramic is still the storage option of choice, although much of it is now housed inside the cabinets.

In the 20th-century fitted kitchen (1960s), electric appliances and other conveniences finally enter the scene. An electric refrigerator offers storage for perishable goods, and the gas range modernizes the cooking experience. Plus, new materials for counter and floor coverings make the space easier to clean. Even small appliances such as toasters and coffee pots change the face of the kitchen during this time.

Jumping into the 21st-century designer kitchen (2020), we see ultra-efficient and streamlined design coupled with copious entertaining and gathering space.

There are some uses for which plastic might remain necessary well into the future, no matter how much we want to help the Earth. Medical supplies, for instance, and materials that need to remain sanitary in transit — though one would hope that we can eventually find biodegradable alternatives for those, too.

For many people, plastic necessities include packaging that helps keep food fresh, because food waste is just as big of an environmental problem as pollution. Americans waste an incredible 150,000 tons of food each and every day — about a pound of food wasted for every person in the country. Most of it is thrown away because it’s spoiled.

But if you look beyond the convenient plastic wrap and disposable zip-top bags found at your local grocery store, there are plenty of ways to make food last. Products that use vacuum seals without the need for disposables might even keep food fresher for longer than ever, and all without the environmental impact.

“Equilibric Vacuum Lids” are a new offering that aim to be just as convenient and easy to use as conventional methods, but with much better results. It’s a set of universal vacuum-suction “Freshy” lids that remove all the air from your food containers. The accompanying automatic pump takes just five seconds to “seal your meal” using a small motor.

The process prevents bacteria buildup, prevents oxidation caused by exposure to oxygen, and seals in just the right amount of moisture so food doesn’t dry out. The special silicone sealant on the lids also lets them fit almost all dishes, pots, pans, coffee containers, and drinking glasses. The three sizes fit any diameter from five to 40 centimeters (about two to 15 inches), and they’re dishwasher safe.

“Freshy! is a technologically advanced universal vacuum lid [that uses a] special silicone coating to form a vacuum seal with just about any size container, dish, or pan. Freshy! is so fast and so easy to use. Once the lid is placed on top of the container, you simply attach the hand-held turbo pump to the lid and in seconds, the air is pumped out of the container, allowing you to keep food fresher, tasting better, and [lasting] up to seven times longer than [it would in] a regular plastic container.”

“Equilibric! is here to put an end to food waste and to help stretch your food dollars by fighting off food’s number one enemy of spoilage — air (oxygen). The air left in a container that food is stored in can cause food spoilage in several ways. It can help bacteria grow and it can cause damage to foods by oxidation (the same process that makes metal rust). When it comes right down to it, Equilibric! preserves your food by preventing the growth of mold or bacteria. It’s those things that make food spoil. And by removing oxygen, mold and bacteria can’t grow.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Young woman preps fresh veggies and stores them using her Equilibric! lids to enjoy later.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are the most obvious foods to use with the Equilibric set, but leftovers, coffee, chips, cookies, and other snack foods can benefit, too. As a bonus, the set’s included drink cap even works on bottles of wine.

Check out the Equilibric Kickstarter Campaign for more information on backing the project and preordering in the future.

The post Equilibric!

Opening your cooler to find a soggy mess at the end of the day is pretty much inevitable when you’re packing anything more than drinks into it. Soft foods like sandwiches get squashed, melting ice infiltrates your bags and containers to render food inedible, and everything else in the cooler ends up smelling like old hot dogs. Not exactly appetizing, huh? Oh, and if you’ve got a lot of stuff in a large cooler, fumbling around for a particular item just makes the ice melt faster.

Some kind of organizer that keeps certain foods up out of the ice seems like an obvious way to solve the problem, but somehow, few such products actually exist. The JOEE, which takes its name from baby kangaroos, is looking to change all that.

The JOEE’s designers deem their creation “the ultimate hard cooler organizer,” consisting of a simple plastic insert that sits above the main ice compartment of your cooler to keep certain foods separate and protected. Cans and bottles are heavy and can end up smashing the more delicate items, so the JOEE gives them their own little upright compartment, holding six 12-ounce cans or three bottles. There’s also a section for clean, hygienic ice storage for your drinks and — perhaps most crucially — a dry food storage area. This section of the JOEE cooler organizer lets foods prone to sogginess stay chilled without directly touching any ice, holding up to nine sandwiches at once.

Made of impact-resistant BPA-free plastic, the JOEE also boasts a lid that doubles as a clean cutting surface, and test runs by its makers show that it keeps ice cold 13 percent longer than usual, even in high performance YETI coolers. Since it’s modular, you can leave your heavy cooler outside and just bring in the organizer to pack your foods and drinks. Then at the end of the day, just run it through the dishwasher.

The JOEE doesn’t just fit YETI coolers. It also works with a wide variety of models from Grizzly, Igloo, Coleman, Cabela’s, Canyon, Orca, Pelican, and more. If you want to determine whether it’ll fit your cooler, just make sure the bottom of the inside measures at least 9-and-3/8ths inches wide, the inside top measures between 10-and-3/8ths and 13 inches wide, and the interior depth is at least 8.5 inches.

“Over the years, high-end coolers have evolved to become bear-proof, virtually indestructible, and to keep ice cold for as long as 10 days. But when it comes to food storage, most of the advanced coolers are still just an empty box. JOEE is changing that.”

“Imagine off-roading in the backcountry with a cooler in tow, knowing that the food you brought along is safely stored right where you put it. JOEE secures your food inside your cooler and protects dry ingredients from melted ice. Now, your cooler can be just as awesome on the inside as it is on the outside.”

The JOEE cooler organizer just completed a successful Kickstarter campaign. Backers will start to receive their products in November 2018, and it’ll likely be made available to the public around the same time. The JOEE is designed and manufactured in Colorado.

The post Maximum Cool: Hyper-Organized Cooler Nixes Soggy Sandwiches first appeared on Dornob.

That’s basically like throwing out two out of every five grocery bags you bring home after each trip to the store.
The idea behind this sustainable venture is to allow consumers to save all that money and reduce their waste, making sure that every item on their shopping list can be utilized to its full potential before its shelf life runs out completely.

How Does it Work?

Each Smarterware container comes with one removable (and waterproof) SmartTag, which use a green, yellow, or red light to indicate whether the food is fresh, needs to be eaten soon, or is past its shelf date and should be avoided. Simply attach the Smart Tag to any piece of Smarterware and let your smart home assistant know exactly what you’re saving. Then Ovie does the rest.

When the button on the Smart Tag is pressed, it connects to Ovie’s hub, which registers the device with the company’s cloud. When you tell your smart home assistant what you’re saving, it informs that cloud. Ovie then pulls up information regarding your food and how long it should last from a database and sends it back to the Smart Tag, triggering a countdown process.
After half of the countdown has passed, the cloud tells the Smart Tag to change the color of its light to yellow and forwards a notification to your phone via an accompanying app to let you know. The next time you open your fridge, you’ll have no problem deciding which grub to snap up first. Family meal planning just got a whole lot easier for the head chef!

For extra assistance, you can elect to have Ovie send you a daily reminder (at the time of your choosing to prevent notification overload) regarding which of your ingredients need attention. Ovie’s downloadable app tracks your food in real time so you can make constant changes and updates, meaning your tags will always read correctly.
You actually don’t have to have a smart home assistant for this to work, but the company does believe that it makes the whole experience a lot more fun!

Who’s Behind the Design?

Ovie is a technology brand with a vision to reduce waste. Realizing that Americans waste 31 million pounds of food each year, they conceived of Smarterware to help solve a problem that is gravely impacting our planet and damaging precious environmental resources.
Ovie is also a member of the Pledge 1%, meaning that they donate 1 percent of all of their profits to combating food insecurity, poverty, and waste all around the world.

How Does It Help You Live Sustainably?

The company claims that around 50 percent of all meals are consumed outside of the home, which means that the average American is enjoying café and restaurant food far more than they are taking to the stove and cooking up their own grub. This lifestyle not only affects our personal finances, but it can also lead to unhealthy eating habits. Of course, making dinner every evening can become a bit of a chore, so the idea behind Ovie is to simplify the task and make it as enjoyable as possible using smart technology.

Ovie can also give you some recipe suggestions based on the ingredients that they already know are waiting to be used in your fridge, so there’s really no need for that takeout brochure that’s been pinned to your fridge for the past twelve months. If you do decide to treat yourself to a pad thai one afternoon and find that you can’t finish it, just put it in the fridge and add a Smart Tag to it to make the most of it later on!

How Can I Get On Board?

Pre-order your Smarterware and Smart Tags on Kickstarter now to receive 50 percent off your order. By making these small yet significant changes to your home and lifestyle, you can begin to reduce your carbon footprint and enjoy a simpler, healthier life from the comfort of your own kitchen.

The post Reduce Your Home Waste With Ovie’s New Sustainable Tupperware first appeared on Dornob.

What is Bee’s Wrap?

The naturally sourced Bee’s Wrap is a malleable material that can be used as a sustainable substitute for plastic food wrap. It’s washable, reusable, and biodegradable—meaning it won’t negatively impact the environment after being thrown away.
Bee’s Wrap was founded in 2012 by farming and gardening enthusiast Sarah Kaeck, who hoped to begin a movement towards healthier and greener living by eliminating the use of plastics in kitchens. After researching some traditional food storage methods, Kaeak was able to create Bee’s Wrap from a combination of organic cotton, beeswax, organic jojoba oil, and tree resin. The wrap is easily molded by the warmth of your hands and hardens to provide safe food storage just minutes after application. Use Bee’s Wrap to cover plates and bowls or to store sandwiches, vegetables, and cheeses.

How is It Made?

At first, each wrap was produced and hand-printed with bee’s wax in the creator’s home. Over time, the company has received enough funding to design and invest in custom fabric-coating machines. Today, Bee’s Warp products are manufactured by a growing team of women in a quaint Vermont workshop.

How is It Sustainable?

Since their inception, Bee’s Wrap fabric and printing processes have been certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard. The beeswax itself is naturally sourced from sustainably-managed US hives, and the jojoba oil is 100 percent organic. These ingredients are not only easier on the environment but possess antibacterial qualities to retain food freshness. As for the packaging in which Bee’s Wrap is delivered, it’s completely recyclable and uses no plastic.
To reuse Bee’s Wrap, simply wash it with cool water and gentle soap. To store the wraps, let them air dry, fold them, and put them away. With proper care, one Bee’s Wrap can last up to a year, so consider it an annual investment. When the wrap’s kitchen life comes to an end, you’ll only have to cut it into strips and throw them into your compost heap. Alternatively, you can try using the strips as kindling for your next fire!
As an environmentally-conscious company, Bee’s Wrap is determined to pave a pathway for social change. At an individual level, the company wishes to at least enhance the lives of those who buy and use their products. Creator Sarah Kaeck explains, “As a family business, we are vested in the values and environment we pass along to future generations.”

Where Can I Get Bee’s Wrap?

You can shop for Bee’s Wrap products on the company’s website, but remember that all shipments are coming from the USA. If you’re living in another part of the world, postage can become a little pricey. Purchase Bee’s Wrap in sets of three or in specific food categories like “baguette wraps” or “bread wraps.” Wraps can also be ordered to feature any of three unique prints: original, geometric, and clover. If you think Bee’s Wrap would make the perfect gift for a friend or loved one, but you’re unsure of what kind of wrap to get them, you can always buy a gift card!

The post Bee’s Wrap: Conscious Design for Sustainable Living first appeared on Dornob.

Sink this spaceship-like prefab pod into your yard and you’ll have an instant electricity-free refrigerator that can keep foods fresh and chill your wine thanks to insulation from the soil. ‘Ground fridge’ by Floris Schoonderbeek for Dutch brand Weltevree is based on traditional root cellar designs. Bury it just three feet deep, and it’ll stay between 50 and 54 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, the ideal temperature for most produce, wines and cheeses.

The whole thing weights 661 pounds and measures about 7.5 feet in diameter, and boasts an aesthetically pleasing arrangement of curving wooden shelves. There’s no permit required to install it, and you pack the soil displaced by the unit on top to create a little hill from which the door will emerge.

The storage capacity is equal to that of about 20 standard refrigerators, up to 1100 pounds of food or the bounty of a 2,690-square-foot garden. Crafted from laminated polyester, it’s strong enough to resist the intrusion of tree roots and other plants, as well as pests.

“The transition to a self-providing food chain showed me the loss of storage facilities,” says the designer. “I set out to solve this in a sustainable and comfortable way. The Groundfridge is a combination of old and proven techniques in a present-day application.”

The post Subterranean Fridge Pod: Keep Food Cold Without Electricity first appeared on Dornob.

Every once in a while you see a product and it makes so much sense that you have to wonder why it didn’t always exist. The Kosmo Freestanding Beverage Cooler (fittingly sold by a company called Problem Solvers) makes it simple to tote along five gallons of a beverage wherever you go without having to worry about having a table nearby to put it on.

The cooler features three telescoping legs that adjust to any height you need. Because they are independently adjustable, you can even put the cooler on uneven ground without the worry that it will tip over.

The legs are self-contained and permanently attached, eliminating that irritating “I know we forgot something…” feeling as you’re leaving for the day. Even if you prefer to put the cooler on a table or countertop, the legs fold away neatly so the large container can be used as a traditional cooler.

On top of the cooler, the lid has five spots to hold cups, cans or bottles. Twin handles and a single spigot finish off the design. For $70, it’s not a bad way to tote your iced drinks around in the warmer months. Plus, they kind of look like friendly space robots, and you have to love anything that’s useful and looks like a space robot.

In order for the ordinary cooler to work you need a table to set it on. After an outing to a local state park where he did not have access to tables or anything else to place the cooler on, he became frustrated and vowed to make a cooler that would be an independent operating system. The Kosmo cooler is an independent operating system that can work either as a table top drink dispenser or as a stand alone drink dispenser. Why would you buy anything else?”

The post Beverage Cooler on Legs Looks Like a Space Robot first appeared on Dornob.

Food storage options abound in any home supplies store, but some of them are true standouts. The EVAK Glass Food storage containers are a cleverly designed set of storage vessels with lids that squeeze every last bit of air out of the jars.

Air is, of course, the enemy of fresh foods. That’s why you furiously try to squeeze those zipper bags as flat as they can go when you’re putting away the dinner leftovers. The minimal lids of the EVAK system do the same thing, but neater and without the danger of squishing the food inside.

The lids have incorporated air inlet and outlet valves. As you push a lid down into the container, all of the air is pushed out, sealing in the freshness. The top parts of the handles are plastic, but the bottoms are stainless steel so your food only ever touches glass and stainless steel.

There are no special mechanisms to work in order to operate the lids. No buttons, no levers, not even a complicated twisting motion. Just push down to seal and pull up to open. The jars come in two sizes: 6″ tall and 8.4″ tall.

The post Sleek Glass Containers Push Out the Air, Seal in the Fresh first appeared on Dornob.

The Swiss are fascinating from their military organization to their rich history of high-quality and world-famous industrial design including watches, pocket knives and more. This giant-sized reinterpretation of the classic Swiss Army Knife (aka the Swissarmius cutlery holder) is both a humorous and functional adaptation of a well-known multifunctional original applied creatively in a kitchen context.

When stocked with kitchenware, the base container looks as if it were left open with its fold-out accessories fully deployed – making even a chaotic set of knives, spatulas and serving spoons look right at home and ready to use. When empty, the simple curved design is quite elegant with its white interior and red facade. You can see how the best effect will be achieved with simple silver or chrome utensils that best match the look of a real Swiss army knife.

It makes one wonder: what else could we do in the kitchen or elsewhere using this Swiss-style storage solution and at what point will it upset the Swiss? In any case, it’s a clever idea and a fun way to spice up the decor on your kitchen counter. Probably best to leave your knives in a drawer or magnetic strip where they belong, so you aren’t tempted to store them blade-up and cut yourself.
