The California-based Rareform is the result of two brothers with a passion for the environment. When one of them, Alec Avedissian, was living in El Salvador, he observed the locals using old billboard advertising materials as roofing tarps, and the signs couldn’t have been more clear: billboards made for a terrific durable and waterproof material.

With product ideas churning in his head, Alec headed home to secure his brother’s help in creating a surfboard carrying sleeve. The two then began calling billboard companies who were more than eager to ship truckloads of used billboards to their home.

Knowing that the typical billboard only remains roadside for an average of a month or two, Rareform can count on a consistent material supply. Plus, turning a usable material into something useful is a business model that gives the vinyl billboards new life instead of just sending them out with the trash.

Six years after the brothers set off on their venture, manufacturing has moved out of their parents’ house and the product line continues to grow. Production in their plant is almost completely streamlined, beginning with the sorting and washing of hundreds of billboards daily. The materials are sorted by thickness and color in order to match the a wide array of preferences for different products. Pieces are then hand cut and inspected before being sent out for final stitching. Even the smallest scraps are incorporated into manufacturing, resulting in minimal waste. Once stitched, each bag is individually photographed for an accurate representation of how the pattern lays out in the final product.

To date, the brothers and their team have converted 2,710,252 pounds of billboard material into one-of-a-kind backpacks, duffle bags, crossbody bags, messenger bags, and briefcases. Unique totes and purses come in a variety of options, with a new lunch tote being the most recent addition to the lineup. The good news is that when it comes to using up all those scraps we mentioned earlier, a ton of products fit the bill. Choose from wallets, toiletry bags, wristlets, pouches, and even fanny packs. Planning on traveling sometime soon? Pick up a passport holder, luggage tag, or key chain. If you’re looking for something more casual, just grab a fun tee or hat.

Rareform may be all about sustainability, but they still realize we live in a modern world, accordingly churning out heaps of laptop sleeves and iPhone cases. Don’t worry though, Alec’s passion for surfing hasn’t waned one bit, and his initial long and short board surf bags are still considered staple products six years later. They also produce change pads, which are perfect for handling the wet and sandy conditions the beach provides.

While Rareform continues to pick up vinyl billboard waste (and we salute them for it!), the newfound spotlight on the ad industry’s bad habits is causing some changes around them. More specifically, new technology in printed billboards allows makers to reduce their carbon footprint with the use of water-based adhesive vinyls and 100-percent recyclable paper. On top of that, many billboards are now digital, taking away the waste but not the resource consumption. Digital billboard signs do create a host of other environmental problems though, including energy consumption, light pollution, and disposal at the end of usable life.

Even better: the embroidered panel is created from recycled scraps of tribal clothing. Once the clothing is made, the extra pieces of scrap fabric are collected and sewn into the material for this collection.
Ethnotek uses ethically sourced handmade textiles for its bags, and the company says purchases help fund employment for hand-printers, weavers and embroiderers in their partnering artisan villages in Ghana, Guatemala, India, Indonesia and Vietnam.

5. Hiptipico

The Viva is a handmade unprocessed-leather backpack stitched and finely detailed in Guatemala. The company says its Hand-Crafted Collection showcases the local artisanal leather hand-stitching method and preserves indigenous culture.
Ten percent of online sales go to Hiptipico’s ‘Backpacks that Give Back’ scholarship program, which helps the children of its artisan partners attend an international preparatory school in Guatemala.

Kiev, Ukraine-based designer Konstantin Kofta of Kofta Studio makes some of the wildest and most attention-getting bags you’ll ever see, but they don’t sacrifice any function for their interesting looks. Made primarily of leather or rubber, Kofta’s creations take on unexpected shapes, sometimes looking like bizarre extensions of their wearers’ bodies. To wear them, you probably have to be okay with a certain amount of gawking from strangers.

The studio’s most recent offering is its fall/winter collection, “ABC,” which consists of nine sculptural geometric bags that are simple in shape but never boring.

“[The] relationship of man and space, the synthesis of technical and creative, making the form is absolute by bringing [it] to geometrical perfection. Forms cleared from any symbolism and metaphoricity or repeatability, monochrome, neutral surfaces, industrial materials, and methods of manufacture. ABC seeks to convey the simplified essence and form of objects, cutting off secondary images and shells. The symbolism prevails based on three main figures, [as well as] colors, dots, and lines.”

Some of Kofta’s designs may seem dark and strange, almost gothic — like the ones resembling anatomical human backs, matte black gas masks, and screaming faces. Others are industrial and architectural, like the barrel, canister, brick walls, and tires.

2017’s “Fear” collection includes some of these darker pieces. Kofta adds that: “fear has its own beauty, elegance, and sensuality. It is one intricate phenomenon. Only living beings may experience fear. The dead [are] nonchalant. It becomes the absolute silence, immortal and eternal, clear from the doom of an imminent ‘I.’ It is important to stop grasping things by their names. Contemplate the feeling and let it reveal itself.”

But Kofta doesn’t only work in stark black. Some of his collections are downright bright and playful, like a series shaped like fruits and vegetables, or the beautiful jewel tones of bags resembling beetles and other natural specimens.

Of the fruit-shaped “Mellow” collection, released for spring/summer 2019, Kofta writes “A fruit to be considered as a product, a final point, destination, and result of any long-term process, effort, contact; the path from birth through blossom towards art.”

Founded in 2010, Kofta Studio is the recipient of numerous art and fashion awards, including the Red Dot 2018 Award and an A’Design Award in 2016. You can see their entire archive at KoftaStudio.com.

According to an analysis of U.S. Department of Transportation figures gathered from 2012 to April 2018 on luggage handling, more than half a million pieces of luggage are predicted to be mishandled each year. That means being lost, damaged, or even sent to the wrong destination altogether — and that’s just for domestic flights.

Lucky for us all, British Airways recently introduced an electronic luggage tag that guarantees you’ll never again be a victim of lost luggage. It’s easy to use, doesn’t mar the surface of your bags, and can be held onto for several trips to come.

How It Works

Passengers purchase the tag from the British Airways website and then link it to the accompanying BA app on their iOS or Android smartphone. The tag is then self-loaded with the passenger’s flight information, including where their flight originates and the final destination. However, the tag only works on direct flights, and it still can’t track the movement of your luggage while it’s physically in transit.

Instead of waiting in line to check in luggage, the tag allows you to simply scan your information, deposit your bags at a designated check-in counter, and walk away assured that wherever they travel to, the information regarding their proper destination will remain well intact. The airline claims that this process reduces luggage check-in time to just around 35 seconds.

The Cost of Peace of Mind

Unfortunately, investing in one of these tags isn’t exactly cheap. Priced around $78.48 through October 2019 and $99.66 thereafter depending on the current exchange rate, the device will be most attractive to travelers who frequently fly British Airways. However, one tag is good for over 3,000 flights and is non-transferable, so for most BA customers, it’ll hardly ever be more than a one-time purchase.

Cosmetic Concerns

The RFID label attaches to the handle of your bag like a customary address tag, but thankfully there are no stickers on it to mar the appearance of your actual luggage. There’s no hardware required and no adhesives involved, either, making the tag extremely easy to transfer between different bags as needed.

Not a New Concept

RFID luggage tagging is far from revolutionary in the airline industry. Back in 2011, Qantas airlines introduced the Q Bag Tag. Unfortunately, that tag wasn’t as upscale as the British Airways version, preventing it from ever being used more than a single time. On top of that, it’s also not currently compatible with the Qantas mobile app.

Looking Forward

Both international and domestic airlines are expected to follow suit with their own versions of interactive electronic luggage tags in the next few years, making the old skycap experience a thing of the past. Stay tuned for more innovations in the highly-competitive airline industry, because who knows? They might just invent something as ingenious as increased legroom one of these days.

The idea for HoverGlide first arose after looking for a way to lighten the impact on troops carrying heavy loads in the battlefield. The Office of Naval Research approached Dr. Lawrence Rome, a biology professor at the University of Pennsylvania and an expert in muscle function and biomechanics, to create a pack that Special Operation Forces could rely on for the massive loads they frequently carry.

The result was the HoverGlide, which today comes in four distinct models, each with a different task in mind. All four packs, however, are compatible with the same patented Suspended Load Technology (SLT) that allows their contents to move up or down in direct correlation to the person carrying it. While this technology doesn’t necessarily make the standing weight any lighter, it does reduce the impact weight that comes with movement.

To get a better idea of how it all works, imagine yourself carrying a forty-pound pack. Whenever you were standing still, forty pounds of pressure would be applied to your joints and body. Whenever you were in motion, the up and down movements of the backpack could cause impacts three times heavier than the actual weight of the pack. With the HoverGlide, that impact is reduced by as much as 87 percent. Talk about a big load off your shoulders!

To see the HoverGlide in action is to suspend disbelief, especially when the wearer’s running. The pack even moves up and down a bit when walking, hovering over the back at a constant distance from the ground so it almost appears still — and a sharp contrast to a typical bouncing backpack. The benefits of this design can really be seen and felt when going up or down stairs. Because the pack moves effortlessly with each ascent or descent, there’s absolutely no pull on the shoulders. Think of it as “hovering” when in motion and “gliding” over stairs.

With the design hammered out, the HoverGlide frame was attached to the Trekker: the largest available pack with a carrying capacity of 55 liters. Along with the spacious main compartment, this pack also offers a standard hip belt, mesh cargo pockets, and a floating upper pocket.

The smaller Tactical design was created with first responders and trainees in mind. It’s large enough for a hydration reservoir and water bottle with its 30-liter carrying capacity, but still small enough to use while running or climbing stairs. The Hiker is similar to the Tactical but intended more for day hikers who need to pack hydration essentials and other small pieces of gear.

The smallest model, the Commuter, comes on a 20-inch modular frame and is perfect for use as a day-to-day pack for work, school, or hiking. Of course, the Tactical, Hiker, and Commuter can all be swapped out for use on the same frame, which means you can get three of the four total pack options in one design!

The last HoverGlide crowdfunding campaign raised nearly $250,000, with the latest one on Indiegogo raising yet another $300,000. Thanks to that success, production is now well underway, and the company hopes to start shipping orders out as soon as July 2019.

The creators of the Hot Pocket note that the usual options to warm up in the great outdoors require disposable single-use hand warmers that only heat up small areas of the body, hot water bottles that could easily leak inside your sleeping bag at any moment, or physically sleeping dangerously close to a fire.

A more sustainable modern solution would be a lightweight, multifunctional item capable of providing significant warmth over a long period of time. The Hot Pocket does just that thanks to its ion battery power and built-in twin radiant heat panels. It’s also breathable and weather-resistant.

The Hot Pocket’s power pack can provide either six hours of heat or fully juice up a phone four times per charge, and it takes just 90 minutes to recharge. It’s also got a power level indicator, built-in LED flashlight, charging port, USB port, and Hot Pocket power port. You can charge it by plugging it into the wall, your car, or a portable solar panel.

The Hot Pocket comes in three sizes, with the size you choose depending on the temperature your sleeping bag is rated for and whether or not you’ll be sleeping in a hammock. If you’re especially cold-natured, the makers recommend getting two: one for your chest and another for your feet.

While the Hot Pocket heated stuff sack is clearly great for camping, it’s also a lot more versatile than that. Since it unzips completely to lay flat on the ground, you could just as easily use it on airplanes and roadtrips, at sporting events, or to keep a toddler cozy in their stroller on a cold day. Basically, it comes in handy anytime you have to be outside or in a cold place but don’t want to be bogged down by wearing excessive layers.

Made by Sierra Madre Research, the Hot Pocket just completed a successful round of crowdfunding on Kickstarter. It will be available for sale later this year at an expected retail price of $139 for the small size, $159 for medium, and $179 for large.

Thanks to the latest in green technology, there’s now a new option making its way onto the market that eliminates many of these concerns. It’s remarkably easy and eco-friendly to produce, looks and feels almost exactly like animal leather, and avoids producing a lot of the waste normally associated with the leather industry. It’s called “Mylo” and it’s made entirely from mushrooms.

The process of producing this intriguing new material begins with mycelium cells: the vegetative part of fungus most typically found growing underground like roots. Fungal mycelium consists of branching, thread-like strands that absorb nutrients and can self-assemble into dense mats.

Developed by a company called Bolt Threads, Mylo takes just days to produce by growing mycelium in beds of corn stalks, where they form an interconnected three-dimensional network. Once they’re ready, Bolt Threads compresses these mats to make a 2D material, after which they tan and dye it to produce the final product. According to the company, Mylo is strong and abrasion-resistant with a warm, supple feel and a ton of leather-like qualities.

They add: “Our friends at Ecovative pioneered this mycelium fabrication technology, which literally grew out of the great work they’ve been doing in creating soft flexible foams. We were blown away and thrilled when they agreed to allow us to help develop it into a commercially viable new material. We’ve established a long-term partnership with Ecovative to optimize this technology and put processes in place to produce commercial-ready Mylo™ material and bring products to market that consumers will love.”

Last fall, Bolt Threads launched the Mylo special edition of the Chester Wallace Driving Bag: a multi-pocketed tote that fused the innovative leather alternative with high-quality design. The world’s first commercially available Mylo product, the tote started at $400 and was only available in limited quantities. While its Kickstarter campaign has long since closed, it’s possible that the bag will become available for purchase again. In any case, it’s just one of many Mylo offerings in the making.

The health benefits of yoga are widely known, but in some communities it’s still seen as a rather feminine activity. What’s worse is that yoga accessories tend to be geared toward women and their generally shorter, smaller bodies.

Brogamats is a company selling yoga accessories that are decidedly more manly than the typical pink and purple butterfly-adorned yoga mats and carrying bags.

Their line includes a bag that looks like a burrito, another that looks like a log, and a very manly plaid lumberjack pattern. A yoga mat that looks like a quiver of arrows is encased by a matching bag that makes you look like a pretty tough dude walking down the street with a bag of arrows on your back.

The guys behind Brogamats point out that their products aren’t just for men; ladies get tired of the normal flowery yoga stuff too. Although their product line seems a little sparse at the moment – the arrow quiver is the only design with a bag and a matching mat – we’re looking forward to some new bro-friendly designs in the futurre.

The creators also made some “Yoga Joes,” i.e. G.I. Joe-style toy soldiers doing yoga poses. Is it all a bit absurd? Definitely. But whatever gets people into wellness, I guess.

“Brogamats was founded on the belief that yoga practitioners defy simple categorization, and include people of all walks of life, all genders, all Lululemon budgets, and all levels of earthy pretentiousness. We are avid yogaphiles who felt the range of yoga products currently available was frustratingly narrow, so we decided to start designing our own. First, we threw on some graphics that we thought would be fun to carry on our backs on the way to class or unfurl in front of envious classmates. Second, given that men are taller, heavier and sweat more than women, we decided to make a mat that was extra long, extra thick, and grippy as hell.”

Bridle leather, saddle stitched, with custom metal fasteners … it all sounds so elegant, which makes the uniquely bent and angled shapes of these suitcases and chests and pop out all the more.

Using such traditional techniques and materials, it is tough to set creative work apart from ordinary vintage and retro objects. Hence the twisting and curving found in each piece by British luggage and handbag brand Williams.

Naturally the pragmatist will object to the offbeat forms they take, but after buying such a fine work would you really toss it carelessly into a trunk, let alone fly with it on an airplane? Probably not – many of these are as much decor as they are travel cases, and could of course be crafted to fit individual shelves, steps and other home spaces.

Some smaller hand-held works, though, may be well-suited to making a splash at an office or other business affair – conventional enough to be professional, but artsy enough to create a lasting impression.

The making process is extremely labor intensive with each piece of leather being cut by hand and constructed individually using traditional techniques, while maintaining the highest level of quality. All of the products are made from the highest quality, English Bridle leather, sourced from Northamptonshire, where it is finished by hand by experienced craftsmen. All of our fittings are cast in one of the last remaining foundries in the UK. British materials can be more expensive but we believe strongly that they reinforce our dedication to quality and truly British designs.”
