The result is the ASB Nautilus, which the company calls “the world’s first whirlpool made entirely out of glass.” The design is as simple as can be: just four sides made of transparent glass and a solid floor. That allows it to virtually disappear during the day, so you barely even notice it’s there. But at night, it “becomes the protagonist at the touch of a button,” as built-in lighting turns it into a visual focal point even when it’s not in use.

That means instead of tucking it away in a corner or sinking it into the ground so it’s less of an eyesore, you can put it on full display. Measuring about six by six feet wide and three feet tall, it offers a minimalist silhouette framed with stainless steel and features an array of lighting schemes that start simple in the MK I model and get more complex with the MK II and MK III versions. The MK I has an RGB LED strip running around the perimeter of the tub, the MK II can be illuminated across the whole surface of the floor, and the MK III has a full LED screen with video content to offer “an incredibly immersive spa experience.”

All three models can be programmed to light up in your preferred colors, but the MK III gives you the most options. You can even livestream to the screen if you want, watching programming through the water. The company imagines this feature being particularly valuable for logos and other brand content. It’s kind of weird to imagine trying to watch anything more than some ambient visuals, but it could be cool to project custom creations for parties and events, too.

The Nautilus hot tub also comes with a heating system that can be placed as far as 15 feet away from the tub and three easy-fix pipes that supply water and air. The connections are hidden beneath steps providing access to the tub on all sides. The standard tub heats up by one to two degrees Celsius per hour, taking up to eight hours to be ready to enjoy, while the premium version heats up in half the time. The premium versions also include a high-end UV cleaning system, and every tub comes with an insulated cover in your choice of color.

Some users might miss the molded plastic seating that makes standard hot tubs comfortable to sit in. The Nautilus doesn’t have jets, either. “We believe that the concept of limiting the user to present seating configurations takes away from the experience the Nautilus is designed to provide,” the company explains. “An experience much closer to the Japanese Onsen culture where one floats in hot water admiring the view or relaxing the weary body along the way. It is a ritual of indulgence and immersive-ness. For this reason we believe the lighting aspects of the Nautilus are of superior nature over the gimmicky massage jets and plastic benches.”

Unveiled virtually at the 2021 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the pricy bath takes inspiration from shinrin-yoku, or Japanese “forest bathing,” the practice of experiencing deep relaxation in the woods by taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of nature with openness and intention. The idea is for the tub to provide refuge from all the stress of daily life, immersing you not just in warm water but also in the experience of self-care.

The smart tub stands fairly tall, with a boxy silhouette and a curved void that fills with water from the bottom for a more gentle, quiet introduction to your home spa interlude. In the fullest-featured (and most expensive) version, you can use voice commands and/or the accompanying smartphone app to turn on the tub, set the depth and temperature, activate the atmospheric fog, and choose from static or dynamic lighting options in various colors. The tub’s “experience tower” also delivers essential oils directly into the water if you like, and its wooden “infinity edge” allows water to spill over the sides and be captured and recirculated.

Depending on which features you choose, the price ranges from $6,198 to $15,998, but no version is entirely plug-and-play. Produced in collaboration with the high-end faucet brand Moen, the Nebia first launched in 2015, with a groundbreaking design that could atomize water into millions of tiny particles to make its spray as efficient as possible. Now, the San Francisco-based startup is back with the Nebia Spa Shower 2.0, which incorporates customer feedback on the first model for a host of new improvements.

Ten precision-turned nozzles enshroud the user in a warm mist, delivering ten times more surface area of water to your skin and hair than the average shower head. An adjustable sliding bracket also allows you to customize the water pressure, and the whole thing tilts up to 45 degrees to help you direct the spray. Finally, a fully positionable hand wand with a magnetic dock lets you target those hard-to-reach areas lower on the body.

Installing the Nebia is also quite easy. You can do it yourself without the need to hire a plumber or drill into your shower enclosure. “If you can change a lightbulb, you can install Nebia,” the company says. It can even be done in a matter of minutes, with the parts simply screwing and sliding into place.

Lava Mae gets to the heart of important issues, though, providing showers and personal hygiene products to people living on the streets around the world. Dignity and self-worth are the core messages Lava Mae shares as it helps people access these most basic of human needs and comforts.

“Lava Mae brings critical services to the streets, delivered with Radical Hospitality, to restore dignity, rekindle optimism, and fuel a sense of opportunity,” the nonprofit explains on its website. “Our audacious goal is to unleash a Radical Hospitality Revolution around the world.”
CNN Hero Doniece Sandoval started Lava Mae in San Francisco back in 2013. She noticed more and more people sleeping on the streets of San Francisco as the city became an increasingly expensive place to live due to the tech industry boom, which skyrocketed real estate prices and sped up the gentrification process.

CNN reported that Sandoval was shocked when she found that there were less than 20 shower stalls and toilets for the thousands of homeless people in the city. “For the homeless community, it was the equivalent of being in a third-world country,” she told CNN.

The organization converted retired city buses into mobile shower units that could give people easy access to their services, and it also hands out hygiene kits, packs of new underwear, and comfortable pairs of socks.
Now Lava Mae provides outreach in Los Angeles, too, and it’s developed a kit to make it easy for people in other cities and countries to set up their own mobile shower projects for their communities. The “BuildIt” kit provides specifications for building mobile shower trailers and includes talking points to examine before launching a project. Lava Mae even helps connect new service providers with local partners, volunteers, and donors.

“We pilot, test, and refine new programs and share what we’ve learned with the world,” the nonprofit says, adding that it “forges creative partnerships across sectors to radically increase access to services and better meet [its] guests’ needs.”

Human connection and dignity are paramount in all of Lava Mae’s work, and in the list of ways in which people can help, it’s noteworthy that the first suggestion the organization provides is “Acknowledge: Simply making eye contact and even smiling at those you pass on the street is a good first step. It makes a difference when people are seen rather than ignored.”

Other ways that individuals and corporations can help are by donating supplies for hygiene kits like toothbrushes and soap or volunteering at one of Lava Mae’s locations.
In addition to the mobile showers, Lava Mae runs pop-up “care villages” to give homeless people easy access to checkups and treatment from doctors and dentists as well as a good haircut, a clean set of clothes, and the chance to talk with a lawyer if they need legal advice.

Lava Mae has served more than 4,000 individuals, provided 20,000-plus showers on its mobile units, and raised global awareness about the homeless community’s lack of access to basic hygiene.

When Boston-based designers Sally Wilson and John Kelsey of Wilson Kelsey Design were tasked with creating a luxurious bathroom based on artworks from the period between 1875 and 1915, Monet’s water lily paintings quickly came to mind. The duo visited the Orangeries Museum in Paris and took in an oval room designed by Monet himself to house his oversized water lily panels, noting the “modern sensibility expressed by their simplicity.”

“While Impressionism may seem traditional today, at the time it was considered avant garde,” they explain. “The late 19th century was a time of transition and flux. Impressionism was part of the movement away from classicism and realism toward expressionism and deconstructionism. In fact, impressionism was the modern movement of the period. The potential to create visual tension and excitement around that ‘moving away’ was very inspiring to us!”

The result is a work of art in its own right — an ovoid bathroom featuring impressionistic water lily wallpaper, French paneling in the color “Chicago Blues” by Benjamin Moore, a water lily glass tile mosaic, and sculptural golden accents. First unveiled at the 2018 DXV Design Summit in New York City, the bath pays tribute to Monet in both its incorporation of his works and its successful distillation of a mood. Its harmonic contrast of classical and modern elements makes the space easy on the eyes and keeps most of the focus on the artistic features.

“A Monet hallmark is the reflection of light on water, and a bathroom is all about water,” says John Kelsey. “Our goal was to celebrate Monet and his Lily Pad Series within the context of that era’s architecture while adding a modern sensibility and technology via our fixtures, lighting, and materials.”

Who wouldn’t want to sink into this sumptuous freestanding tub designed by Lowell, enjoying Rem Collection faucets with water flow patterns reminiscent of natural waterfalls? They opted for top-of-the-line materials manufactured into a shower that’s “an unparalleled visual and tactile finish and an iconic design fit for every home.”

The central element of the Nebia is the bracket that you attach to the wall of your shower. (Did you proudly grout and tile the wall? Don’t worry about having to take a hammer to your hard work–the anodized-aluminum bracket adheres to your tile itself and channels the water to the showerhead and wand.)

On the bracket is an arm that slides up and down so you can adjust the height of the spray. Little kids? No problem. Tall and gangly teen who hogs the shower? Ditto. Everyone can customize their showering experience.

The widespread appeal of the shower has been put to the test with willing volunteers from Equinox Gyms, Google, Apple, and Stanford University, and the company refined its design based on their feedback.

Nebia is just starting out, and the company is setting its sights high, saying it wants to make world-changing products to help communities in need. “Our vision is to scale our technology and reach all corners of the world where sanitation and water conservation is most vital,” the management team explains.

This radical redesign of bathroom water features was thought up by Julia Kononenko. The 2 in 1 system does something that may be entirely new in bathroom design: it combines the shower head and sink faucet into one long, swiveling arm.

In this revolutionary bathroom design, the shower and sink are right next to one another. When you need to use the sink, a long metal arm swivels down to faucet height. When you are showering, the arm swivels back up to shower head height. One fixture, two functions.

As the arm moves between positions, a central switch automatically alters the water flow. When in shower head position, the water comes out like raindrops – but when in sink position, the water is dispensed through a central opening in one strong stream.

The example built by the designer shows just how stylish and visually fascinating this bathroom would be. Of course, we would suggest adding shower doors or at least a curtain to keep the water from splashing everywhere, but the compelling design deserves appreciation for its unique aesthetic and functionality.
