The new textile and wall-covering collection from designer Catherine Martin is just the latest reminder of Presley’s continuing influence. Dubbed the “Royal Menagerie,” the collection was made for the luxe brand Mokum, itself a division of James Dunlop Textiles.

The set designer for the new movie Elvis, Martin’s vision is a sumptuous and gloriously maximalist exploration of plush, bold fabrics and eye-popping patterns — the height of 1970s opulence. The designs capture signature sights from Elvis’ world-famous Graceland home in Memphis and reimagine the lavish suite he occupied during his famed Las Vegas residency in 1969 at what was formerly the largest hotel/casino in the world, the International Hotel (now the Las Vegas Hilton).

Upon seeing the Royal Menagerie, one can almost imagine him lounging amidst its velvety landscapes, with or without his blue suede shoes. Dominated by bold, bright botanicals and immersive patterns that even Elvis himself wouldn’t sneer at, Martin’s vision is full of depth and delightfully 1970s grandeur that is as showy and complex as Presley was himself, both as a performer and as a mainstay of the American cultural consciousness.

Of course, the designs were not only inspired by Elvis’ palatial home and Las Vegas suite. They also pay tribute to the king’s penchant for audacious, fashion-forward prints that defined his on-stage persona as much as his smooth, silky voice and gyrating hips. The “Panthera” pattern in particular, with its leopard print amidst a deep gold backdrop, is a chic homage to Presley’s distinctive duds.

Meanwhile, Graceland looms large as its colorful, stained-glass peacock windows are playfully evoked by “Royal Peacock” — fabrics and wallpaper prints dominated by green jungle hues. And don’t forget the ever-present deep shag carpeting, another iconic mainstay at Graceland.

Deep hues offset the rich textures of the fabrics and textiles, but the star of the show is definitely the plush patterns, which are pure Presley. As Martin, “a child of the 70s,” herself recently noted, “I have an affinity for pattern.” Indeed, just one look at the over-the top pieces featured in this collection is enough to satisfy any Elvis fan’s wildest dreams.

Wallpaper started showing up again in chic interiors about a decade ago, but in updated patterns and without the chair rail or ceiling borders. In just the past year though, designers and homeowners have started playing around with wallpaper borders in fresh and unique ways.

“We know that using color in homes has become increasingly popular in the past few months,” says Lucy Searle, Editor in Chief of Homes & Gardens in an interview with MSN. “We talk constantly to interior designers, and they largely cite the pandemic as the reason for this — homeowners spent the confinement of the pandemic lockdowns really examining their homes and many really craved visual joy. Paint can bring color in blocks, but wallpaper can bring rich colors along with pattern and texture, too.”

She adds that “interior designers also tell us that people are braver with color scheming and mixing patterns than they were before, which means where once a wall might have been wallpapered alone, now borders are adding that extra visual layering.”

London-based designer Susie Atkinson recently added borders to her online wallpaper offerings, telling Apartment Therapy that she loves the way they “add detail and delight in an easy, affordable way.” She says borders are catching on again because they are “less of a commitment than wallpapering the whole room but still bring that color and interest to walls adding an accent to contrast or complement a room. The possibilities with them are endless.”

When wallpaper originally got its start in the 16th century, it was hung on walls with copper tacks instead of glue, and borders came into vogue to discreetly cover up the tacks. “For centuries, borders have been used in decorating — historically, often to hide imperfections in a room or a wallpapering technique, to complement the design, or, as is often thought in recent years, as a sometimes not-so-stylish addition to a scheme,” Kate Hawkins, founder of wallpaper business CommonRoom told House & Garden.

Thankfully, modern methods have freed borders from their practical intent, and they can be pasted on almost anywhere. Today’s trendy borders are graphic and playful. Stripes and clean geometric patterns are popular, but so are small print florals, reminiscent of some of the earlier 80s designs.

You can find Instagram posts with wallpaper borders outlining door or window frames or highlighting an entire entryway. Not only are they being used to line ceilings and create chair rail details, but they’re also being in placed around joinery detail like under the tread of staircases or along the cornices of a closet. One designer even plastered border to form a patterned corona for his ornate bed.

Accentuate the Positive

Start by searching your home for existing architectural details you’d like to play up. Got an interesting front door? Paint it a bright color inside and out. Original wood trim around the doors and windows? Give it a boost with some furniture polish or shift the color with oil stain, which doesn’t require extensive sanding before use. Call attention to a cool ceiling with an attention-grabbing light fixture. If you have a fireplace, make it the centerpiece of the space by painting it (or the area around it) with a color that strongly contrasts the surrounding walls.

Faux Trim Work

If you aren’t already in on the secret of architectural salvage shops, find some in your area immediately. You never know what you’ll find — grand columns, pristine Victorian cabinetry, midcentury modern details, and other accents can completely transform the character of your space for a modest investment.

Fake a Fancy Ceiling

If you already have picture rail or you’re interested in adding some, here’s an easy way to fake a tray ceiling: extend the ceiling paint down to the rail. Again, you can fake one with a stripe of contrasting paint.

IKEA’s inexpensive and widely available Billy bookcase is a great starting point for the look of built-in shelving without the high price tag. One enterprising couple mixed them with IKEA Sektion kitchen base cabinets, spaced them all evenly using 2x4s, and then added crown molding and trim. The result looks just as expensive as the $9,000 they were quoted for a custom job, but it cost them just $1,500.

Industrial Design

While it was super hip to have bare pipes and bulbs for a minute, stark and warehouse-like industrial decor is quickly becoming too cold and grim for our current pandemic conditions. People are looking for cozy, welcoming, and warm spaces to soothe their frazzled home-bound nerves. Industrial touches in strategic places will remain chic, of course, but an entire house full of them just isn’t desirable anymore. In fact, a recent survey of 2,4000 people by UK-based home improvement resource HomeHow found that 61 percent of respondents are already regretting going overboard on industrial decor.

Open Shelving

That same survey found that another 52 percent of respondents regretted switching out their wall cabinets for open shelving. Sure, those dishes and glasses look pretty on the shelves in the magazines, but in real life – the one where we’re all stuck at home more than usual – open shelves aren’t so practical. If dishes are close to the stove, they can attract grease or dust. Plus, compared to wall cabinets, open shelves can seriously reduce storage space and look cluttered if not properly arranged each and every time.

Shiplap and Barn Doors

Thanks to the genius styles of Joanna Gaines, farmhouse decor found a serious following in the 2010s. Still, it can feel terribly out of place in, for example, an urban condo. After her most recent home renovation and sale, the actress launched a new design business called Frenshe Interiors. Announcing the venture on her popular lifestyle blog of the same name, Tisdale also declared that she would be taking a break from doing her own renovations for a while as she was expecting her first child and wanted to “be more present in my life for my family.” Baby girl Jupiter Iris was born on March 23rd, 2021.

To date, the bulk of the posts on her newly created @Frensheinteriors Instagram account have been highlights from the residence Tisdale and her husband Christopher French sold in January. After buying the 4,214-square-foot Los Angeles property for $4.1 million in 2019, Ashley worked with her contractor father Michael Tisdale and several of her favorite designers to transform the house into a chic abode that resold for $5.78 million.

“We walked into a home that had sadly been forgotten; the couple was getting divorced, and I think the house suffered as well,” Tisdale wrote. “There were pieces of the wood floor missing in rooms, leaking walls from leaking windows and weird design choices like painting the beautiful gazebo and window trim white so the house had no dimension. We realized this was not what we expected and it was gonna be a huge undertaking but with my dad, Michael Tisdale, being a contractor (and us not afraid of renovating) we were excited to bring this house back to life.”

After completing the most pressing projects like replacing the roof and waterproofing the windows, Ashley turned her attention to the aesthetics. To modernize the house – located in L.A.’s Los Feliz neighborhood – Tisdale had steel doors and European oak floors installed but held onto many details like leaded glass windows and light fixtures that were original to the 1923 dwelling.

She also decided to go bold with color in several of the rooms, painting the dining room a rich forest green, giving the living room fireplace a coat of denim blue, and creating black and white stripes around a downstairs powder room. The entryway, designed by celebrity interior artists Pierce & Ward, features an intricate wallpaper throughout.

“I would have never gone for wallpaper because I’m not a huge wallpaper fan, but they killed it with this entry. They created a beautiful[ly] ornate but stylish welcoming to the home,” Tisdale wrote in an Instagram post.

The kitchen was a special labor of love, as Ashley and her husband committed to using a small IKEA kitchenette for a year while the renovations were being completed. Decked out in white subway tile and white shaker cabinets, Tisdale added a wood ceiling and a butcher block island to soften the look. The eating nook features a custom fireplace conceived and built by her father.

Ashley also revamped the outdoor deck, pool, and lounge area, throwing in some color and stripes.

For fans of the actress who worry that home design might distract her from her first craft, Ashley put those fears to rest. When asked by Architectural Digest about her goals for the new business, Tisdale replied, “To have fun. This isn’t my full-time job. I’m an actress first. I just have a passion for interior design and will continue to help friends and clients when I have the chance.”

The study outlines wallpaper’s many stylistic transitions and provides a visual snapshot of the trends over the centuries.

Beginning in the 1500s, wallpaper became a more affordable option than the decorated tapestry previously available, making it more accessible for the standard home owner. No longer a product exclusively for the elite class, designs centered around the block style, coming in large squares rather than today’s ubiquitous rolls. At the end of the century in 1599, a Guild of Paperhangers was even established in France. These craftsman developed wallpaper with higher-quality prints and faster production options. Then came the layering of different materials, such as flocked wallpaper, made with a dusting of powered wool. During this time, makers began gluing squares into rolls for a design that repeated across the wall.

The 1700s saw wallpaper design gain popularity in America, while the British saw the government implement taxes on the already common product. At the same time, the Chinese were focused on the luxury market, painting unique designs rather than mass producing prints.

In fact, it wasn’t until the industrial revolution of the 1800s that wallpaper entered the realm of mass production. The first wallpaper printing machine rolled out lengths of the stuff, making it even more affordable for the general public. Patterns began to vary widely, offering a range of designs for the consumer. Natural elements were still popular, but geometric art and ornamental prints found an audience, too.

Print options continued to expand in the 1900s, ranging from bold to plain, and wallpaper became available at virtually every price point. In addition, it had become more durable and less likely to fade.

Born in Lima, Peru in 1950, Paredes draws from a deep cultural connection to nature and a fascination with the process of discovery. Working solely in the realm of self portraiture, Paredes makes herself virtually invisible, treating her own image like that of a rare creature to be hunted in the jungle. This is especially apparent when you consider the evolution of her work. In the early 2000s, Paredes completed a series in which she painted herself to look like some of nature’s strangest animals, like armadillos, snakes, and skunks, as well as mythological creatures like gargoyles.

The works were autobiographical, she says; she felt a kinship with “loner” animals and those seen as strange. The works also reflected her desire to fly. Her aim was to erase signs of gender altogether and blur the boundaries between humans and animals. As time went on, more manmade elements began to appear, and her more recent works featuring wallpaper illustrate how she felt as an outsider after moving to the United States. The “nature” is forced and two-dimensional, no longer her native environment, while the three-dimensional artist comes close but never fully succeeds at blending in.

“These works talk about migration and re-location and longing… My life now is pretty nomadic, so behind each image there is a story about a place I have been attached to but had to leave, or a new place where I am living now … how we have to come to terms with such circumstances,” she says in a January 2020 interview with Australian magazine Talking Pictures. “The series started with a static figure. Later the figure gets to ‘participate’ in the action by moving and imitating the background. Then, in the ‘Warriors’ series, the character interprets, grabs, destroys, and appropriates the wallpaper for her own needs and purposes.”

There’s no Photoshop or other digital manipulation happening in these photographs. Paredes plans each composition down to the smallest detail. From afar, the illusion is near-perfect, but if you zoomed in far enough, you’d see the brushstrokes, which the artist likes to leave visible. They add a small but perceptible layer of messiness, alongside Paredes’ own bodily “imperfections” like wrinkles, hair, and scars.

The artist’s theater background comes into play, as well. What we see is the final image, the work that’s presented to the world. But for Paredes, each photograph is just a tiny sliver of what actually took place. She sees each one as a private performance that’s only for her to experience and mull over. “I get pretty much caught up in the performance itself, and sometimes it stays within me for a long time,” she says.

One day, Rachel Cope, the co-founder of Calico Wallpaper, stumbled upon an aura photograph that her partner had taken when he was just a child. Cope found that the image stuck in her mind as if begging her to be put to creative use. “Calico Wallpaper’s Aura Collection reveals these unseen fields,” the company muses. “Drawing on the practice of Kirlian photography, we worked with the experimental design studio The Principals to create an interactive installation that could capture a subject’s Aura. Using conductive sensing, we were able to render the inherent electricity in our bodies and invisible attributes of space visible, and explore the spectrum of Aura’s ever-changing colors. We transformed the resulting images into large-scale wallpapers to create a series of seven colorways that reflect the intangible qualities of energy and light.”

The installation in question features panels lined with Aura wallpapers and an interactive chandelier that emits various sounds based on the movements of the people walking directly beneath it. The exhibition debuted at this year’s Sight Unseen Offsite, a show that displays the work of several high-end design studios.

Some of the Aura collection’s available colorways include a deep indigo that fades into cerulean blue, a muted pink and gold that recalls a sunset disappearing over the horizon, a shimmering lavender, and the dark hues of an approaching storm. Each roll of wallpaper is printed on Type II vinyl, given a Class A fire rating and 10-week lead time, and features custom, non-repeating artwork.
