You might be having the most rotten, terrible, frustrating, and infuriating day of your life — but things could always be worse. A new set of teacups from Calamityware aims to remind you of that fact with a bunch of detailed illustrations in the style of Delft pottery. As you unwind with your mug of soothing bedtime tea, reflect upon all of the catastrophes that aren’t happening right now. There’s no zombie apocalypse, for instance. A giant troll didn’t swipe your car off the interstate on the way home. Aliens haven’t landed in their UFOs to eradicate humans from the planet. No one has actually resurrected any velociraptors.

This might just be the most fun twist on traditional Delft pottery you’ll ever see. Dating back to the 16th century in the northern part of The Netherlands, the very Dutch craft involves artisans hand-painting intricate scenes of landscapes, windmills, and houses in beautiful Delft blue. Calamityware’s version takes those idyllic scenes and inserts Sasquatch, giant frogs, pirates, sea monsters, cephalopods, and a “devil blob,” among other horrors.

Available as sets of two or more cups and saucers, or saucers alone, the 8-ounce teacups add a new option to Calamityware’s previous 12-ounce “Things Could Be Worse” mugs. They’re all made and decorated at the award-winning Kristoff porcelain workshop in Poland using the traditional in-glaze technique and are food safe, microwave safe, and dishwasher safe.

By the way, Calamityware has a host of other “Things Could Be Worse” products on their website. To go with your new teacup set, you can purchase four different bundles of matching tea accoutrements, including a teapot, sugar crock, and creamer carafe. A special holiday edition of the mugs introduces giant robots, pterodactyls, and zombie poodles into a festive winter scene alongside Santa, Christmas trees, and giant gingerbread men.

As their Kickstarter page says, “Your Things-Could-Be-Worse Teacups and Saucers are sure to become treasured family heirlooms cherished for their beauty, utility, and humor. Plus, these teacups help you achieve inner peace by keeping life’s setbacks in perspective and promoting a healthy attitude of gratitude. Things could be worse. In-glaze porcelain is fired at extra-high temperatures to allow the image to melt slightly into the surface of the plate. Connoisseurs will appreciate the beauty of the in-glaze technique which the artists at Kristoff have been refining since 1831. This is the look of porcelain you see in museums. Sweet.”

The teacups are expected to be available in the shop later this year. A set of 2 teacups and 2 saucers sold for $68, while a full set of 8 of each cost $264. The original Calamityware mugs and other products are available on the company’s website starting at $21.

There’s something magical about the work of Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori. His tiny tea houses have a sense of vitality and movement to them, as if they could transform into living creatures and walk away at any moment. Reminiscent of fairytales and Japanese animated films like those of Studio Ghibli, Fujimori’s fantastical structures stand on long leg-like stilts or hang from cables, gazing passively down at the world below.

His latest is yet another tea house/treehouse amalgamation, blackened on the outside in a traditional Japanese process called “yakisugi.” The wood is intentionally charred to carbonize it, giving it natural protection against insects and weather and a dramatically crackled appearance. Simultaneously, the structure’s curving shape, pointed roof, and rounded windows lend a bit of softness to the effect.

A narrow 19-step metal staircase leads to the entrance. Inside, a U-shaped wooden bench wraps around a table used for tea ceremonies. Irregular cutouts in the oak-paneled walls reveal gridded leaded glass windows, adding to the organic and seemingly sentient qualities of the house with an effect that’s almost like eyes.

The Ein Stein House’s (“One Stone House”) location is almost as notable as its architecture, standing on Europe’s first permanent NATO missile base, Hombroich Rocket Station, which was abandoned before being purchased in 1994 by art collector Karl Heinrich Müller for use as a museum and outdoor art gallery.

The Museum Insel Hombroich, set in the German town of Neuss in North Rhine-Westphalia, features over 62 acres of meadows and woods. Now dotted with a collection of outdoor installations, the property was once so secretive that Neuss wasn’t even noted on maps, guarding stored warheads for cruise missiles and rockets. When he renovated and adapted the site, Müller wanted to embrace its history while infusing it with art and culture, leaving the storage facilities, hangars, observation tower, and bomb-shelter systems in place.

A description of the project on architecture site Metalocus explains that the “stone tea house and other architectures were developed together with the Japanese architect. The selection of projects focuses on the tea houses he has planned, in particular the Ein Stein tea house designed for the Hombroich rocket station and its creation. The tea houses — like other buildings and furniture shown — are shaped by the use of natural materials and their relationship to the surrounding landscape.”

“Karl Heinrich Müller, the founder of Museum Insel Hombroich, was particularly interested in the tea ceremony and in objects and works of art from the context of this centuries-old tradition.

Just three of the world’s most precious tea bowls still exist. Made from a type of pottery called “Yohen Tenmoku,” one of the remaining original bowls is currently in Osaka, another in Kyoto, and the third in Tokyo. Nobody knows exactly who made them or how they were made, only that it was likely in the Nan-So region of China during the Song Dynasty, between the 12th and 13th centuries CE.

Made with a base of blue-black glaze dotted with oily-looking spots, the bowls were likely unappreciated in China, where rainbows were considered unlucky. Somehow, a number of them made their way to Japan, where they were prized by collectors and valued for use in tea ceremonies. The style was eventually recreated by Japanese ceramicists, but today only a small number of artists still work with the style.

The beautiful crystalline patterns on the bowls appear spontaneously during the firing process, which are different from the “oil spots” found on other forms of pottery baked in the Jian kilns of China. Modern potters, for all their new techniques and technology, can’t seem to replicate the workmanship of the originals.

A new crowdfunding campaign called “TENMO” pays tribute to their uniqueness while enhancing the qualities that make them look like “the cosmos in a cup.”

The campaign’s official Kickstarter page reads: “Tenmoku, also known as Jian Ware, is a legendary, precious type of porcelain that produces unique designs that are both mystical and unpredictable. It’s impossible to produce two identical Tenmoku porcelains. The name of Tenmoku comes from the word ‘Tenmo(天目).’ It means the eyes of the sky in Chinese and Japanese.”

TENMO founder Tom Fu adds that “other than just being a cultural symbol, many elderly people from China and Japan appreciate Tenmoku for its potential ability to soften water and enhance flavor thanks to the special clay and glaze used to produce [it]. One time when I was getting my morning cup of coffee, I serendipitously used a Tenmoku teacup for my coffee instead of my normal coffee cups. The feeling I got when drinking my coffee out of the Tenmoku was unlike anything else I had experienced with common coffee cups.”

“Drinking my morning coffee out of the Tenmoku that day made me realize that there are no authentic Tenmoku coffee cups on the market currently and that the delicate and exquisite designs of Tenmoku perfectly match the elegant and fine flavors of coffee.”

The result is a Kickstarter campaign aiming to revive the tradition, created by an engineer of magnetic materials in collaboration with master ceramicist Sun Whenzha. They’re made of the very same natural iron-rich clay from Fujian, China that created the originals, and they feature a nano-porous surface that’s believed to enhance the flavor of coffee and tea.

The TENMO campaign page contains lots of fascinating details about the science behind the clay and why its iron content affects the glaze in a way that produces these gorgeous nebula-like patterns. And while the campaign itself may have already ended, you can still follow the project to be notified when the cups are made available to the public.

The post TENMO: Cosmic Coffee Cups Revive an Ancient Chinese Craft first appeared on Dornob.

Making tea has always been a soothing ritual, whether you use tea that comes in bags or loose-leaf teas that you load into an infuser. The Dreaming Whale tea infuser from Gongdreen is a sweet take on plain, boring tea infusers.

Meant to look like a whale in the middle of a pleasant dream, the Dreaming Whale opens its mouth to hold your loose-leaf tea. Close the mouth and dip the whale into a mug of hot water and you’re minutes away from your comforting beverage.

Water enters and exits through small holes in the whale’s body, gently joining tea leaves and hot water in a happy infusion of the restorative drink enjoyed around the world.

The whale’s cute water spout is used to swish around the infuser as the tea is being made. But it can also be detached and used as a stirrer or decoration for your beverage of choice. This would definitely make a cute gift for the tea lover in your life, and it only costs $13. Get it at Gongdreen, where you can find other tea-related items and loose tea as well.

“Do you know the sperm whale? The oil of the sperm whale is known to be one of Earth’s best natural elixirs. The motif of this product is a sperm whale dreaming a peaceful dream somewhere in the deep sea. It’s like drinking Earth’s best natural elixir!”

“Slow down your day with a Dreaming Whale tea break. You can enjoy the tea time when your tea is gently brewed through the Dreaming Whale’s tummy.”

“Open the cap of the whale’s belly under the whale’s body and add the tea.
If you use the “stream of water” to put the whale in hot water, you can pump it conveniently. You can see the water coming up. If you want to stir tea, just use the ‘stream of water.'”

Many tea and coffee lovers have already discovered the joys of the electric kettle, which allows you to heat up water anywhere there’s a power outlet handy. The trouble with those is that they still tend to be too bulky to take along with you, and many have fragile glass carafes, to boot. But what if you could smash the kettle down to less than half its original size to pack into your luggage, take out on a hike, or stow away in the center console of your car?

The Voyager Kettle does all that and more. This highly portable kettle can go virtually anywhere you do, making it easy to boil water within minutes whether you’re at the office or out on a backcountry trail. While it’s not the first collapsible kettle made of food-grade silicone, it’s the first one that doesn’t require an accompanying hot plate or stove.

The Voyager features a 1000W heating element that can be powered by either a 110- or 220-volt current, which means you can use all sorts of different charging devices to power it up, including your car, without the need for an inverter.

The kettle’s coolest feature (other than its collapsibility, of course) is the fact that it will hold your water at the selected temperature for as long as 30 minutes. No more boiling a kettle of water, stepping away for a few minutes, and coming back to find that the water isn’t hot enough.

A digital screen displays the temperature inside the kettle, and you can either choose from 10 preset temperature options or set your own to get things brewing. True tea and coffee aficionados will love that feature, since different types of tea leaves and beans can require different brewing temperatures for optimal flavor. Just remember that the next time you use the kettle, it will automatically heat up to the temperature you last used unless you specify otherwise.

If there’s one caveat to the Voyager, it’s the fact that you still have to plug it into an outlet or charger. A truly portable electric kettle would actually be battery powered so you wouldn’t have to fuss with cords or power supplies while on the go. But perhaps making it self-contained would add too much bulk to the base and defeat the purpose.

The Voyager Kettle recently completed a successful round of crowdfunding on Kickstarter, raising over $43,000 to go into production. With any luck, it should be available to the public in the near future.

The kettle’s Kickstarter page reads: “My company, Nomad Joe, introduces Voyager Kettle to make your time away from home feel more like home. It is our mission to bring people worldwide a simple solution for making coffee or tea while traveling.”

“If you want to have your coffee just the way you like it, why not make it yourself, no matter where you are? People need a simple solution for making coffee or tea while traveling. Whether you’re a world voyager or you just want to make a decent cup of coffee in your office, dorm room, or Airbnb, you need a portable coffee-making option to help you get your fix.”

The post Flat-Pack Voyager Tea Kettle Collapses For Easy Travel first appeared on Dornob.

Connecting a teapot to the internet might seem like overkill in our age of already overly complicated gadgetry, but it’s actually pretty easy to mess up a cup of tea. After all, different varieties require different brew times and water temperatures to fully bring out their respective flavors.

If you’re a serious tea enthusiast, you can spend some time learning the ancient art of tea brewing — or you can allow Teplo to do it for you. Not only does this high-tech teapot make achieving the perfect cup a whole lot easier, but it also assesses the room temperature and your emotional state to make little tweaks to your brew.

Of course, the Teplo certainly isn’t the world’s first smart brewing device. Products like the Qi Aerista offer preset brewing modes for black, green, floral, oolong, and milk teas along with customizable settings and a companion app that allows you to keep a tea diary and find new leaves to try. But where Teplo does go the extra mile is in considering what makes you, the individual tea drinker, different from all the other tea drinkers in the world.

The smart teapot incorporates built-in sensors that collect information about your heart rate and body temperature along with room temperature, humidity level, and sound level to adjust optimal brewing temperatures and time, resulting in a truly personalized cup of tea. So it’s not just perfectly tailored to your own preferences in general, but what’s best for you at the precise moment you’re craving a comforting brew.

To use the Teplo, just add cold water to the removable, dishwasher safe kettle, insert your preferred tea leaves into the rose gold infuser, select the corresponding tea from Teplo’s mobile app, and place your finger on the heart rate sensor if you want an extra personalized cup. The pot will then heat the water to the ideal brewing temperature in just a few minutes, and the infuser will auto-rotate and submerge the tea leaves for the correct amount of time. Once the process is complete, the infuser will rotate out of the water to prevent over-steeping. The pot will even keep your brew warm for hours, in case you’re the forgetful type that makes a pot and only remembers it once it’s gone cold.

Teplo’s makers explain: “Traditionally, tea masters changed tea-brewing conditions by seeing or feeling the drinker’s mental and physical state. Teplo hypothesizes to do the same by collecting your information and your surrounding information. A heart rate and finger temperature sensor located on the base of the kettle detects the user’s heart rate and body temperature. A noise, ambient light, surrounding temperature, and humidity sensor located at the base collects the surrounding environment information. A brewing algorithm based on these parameters then adjusts tea brewing conditions.”

“For example — If you are stressed (judged [by] a combination of higher heart rate and body temperature, higher surrounding noise level, [and it being] later in the day), Teplo will brew tea at a slightly lower temperature, increasing the brewing time to make a more calming, sweeter tea. Similarly, if you are tired (judged [by] a combination of a lower heart rate, normal body temperature, lower surrounding noise levels, [and it being] early morning), Teplo will brew tea at a higher temperature to increase caffeine levels.”

Teplo is currently in the final stages of its Kickstarter campaign. You can back the project while it’s still active and receive a smart teapot of your own at a discounted price, or wait until it’s available to the public next year. The expected retail price is $349.

The post Teplo: Smart Teapot Offers Personalized Brews first appeared on Dornob.

In traditional Japanese tea-master style, this designer avoided hiring an architect or skilled carpenter to construct this “tea house built too high” in Japan.

The experimental and experiential nature of the design and construction process are quite evident in the finished project, photographed by Edmund Sumner. The building pushes structural capacities to their limits and bends (or breaks) design traditions in its organic, evolved-over-time form.

Rather than using trees on the small family plot he owned, he went to a local mountain to harvest two tall logs for the support of his structure. In turn, this allowed him to situate the building where he wanted it and to fully integrate the “trees” with the building they are supporting (since they will not grow over time).
The resulting “house on stilts” is inaccessible except when the builder wants it to be, requiring the use of a tall ladder to scale the first length of trunk before you can reach the built-in ladder that ultimately leads to the DIY tree house design. Sometimes he leaves the ladder nearby, sometimes he doesn’t. So technically, maybe it’s only too high for the people he wants to keep out of it. Aren’t privacy and serenity two key characteristics in any truly great tea house, after all?
Japanese architect and historian Terunobu Fujimori is known for his eccentric and unusual creations, almost always made from natural materials. Other projects include the Nemunoki Museum of Art in Kakegawa, which Fujimori refers to as a “hairy mammoth” for its hand-rolled copper roof connected to the hillside by a “spine” of living grass. Though he’s well known in his native country, Fujimori didn’t become a recognizable name in the West until the 2006 Venice Biennale.

The post DIY “Too Tall” Treehouse Design first appeared on Dornob.

Brewing your own beer has traditionally required a bit of an investment of funds, space, and time, but a new gadget promises to make it more accessible than ever — while also allowing you to brew kombucha, soda, tea, coffee, and other beverages.

Crafted in Seattle, Washington, the Pico U is an all-in-one “universal brewing machine,” fitting onto your countertop as easily as a coffee maker. It comes in two models: the Pico U (Basic), which brews coffee, tea, and fusion beverages like horchata, and the Pico U (Deluxe), which brews all of that plus beer, kombucha, and dry soda. If you can dream it, you can drink it, the makers say, listing off possibilities ranging from a yerba mate afternoon pick-me-up to a crisp lemon cilantro soda.

Just want a cup of coffee? Add in fresh grounds, and you’ll have your beverage in hand within 90 seconds (as fast as a Keurig). Naturally, the process is a little more complex for craft beer, but it’s still beginner-friendly. You use the Pico U’s “Beer Editor” to choose from a library of recipes or create your own. Then, add your grains to the mash bin, place your hops and other flavorings into the “Hops Pack,” and clip the lid onto the “PicoPak,” the bin of ingredients that slots into the machine. You can even buy an accessory keg to brew up to 1.9 gallons at a time.

You can use all the fresh and locally sourced ingredients you want, or you can order pre-filled “PicoPaks” online, which show up at your door ready to brew. These ingredient bundles are fully compostable and easy to customize if you want to add a dash of vanilla to your cold brew or mint to your soda. The PicoPak containers are made from 100-percent bagasse (sugar cane husk pulp.) You can buy as few or as many PicoPaks at a time as you want.
“Pico U creates rich and flavorful beverages using precise temperature control,” explain the creators. “The thermal block takes water from the reservoir and brings it from room temp up to a customizable temperature. Water is distributed evenly over the top of the coffee, first blooming the grounds, then completing the brew for perfect results every time. When you load a PicoPak or PicoPak Mini into your Pico U, it sends the brewing mixture to the right place at the right time to accurately follow your preprogrammed recipe. The Pico U’s multi-flow-manifold allows second-to-second control of what ingredients get infused into the brew.”

“With up to four stages in one recipe, Pico U can use high heat and flow rates to extract rich flavors, and then mellow things out to tease out subtle aromas without overheating delicate ingredients. This powerful feature enables a multi-stage hops boil while brewing beer and empowers a world of creativity when brewing fusion beverages, from infused coffees and teas to kombucha and beyond.”

While it’s certainly true that there are simpler ways to brew all of these beverages, you don’t often find a way to do so much all at once using the same piece of equipment. Plus, brewing these beverages at home saves an awful lot of disposable packaging, from coffee shop cups to glass beer bottles. If you’re a big beer, coffee, tea, and soda drinker, the $199-$229 Pico U could pay for itself pretty quickly. If you miss out on backing the Pico U on Kickstarter, you should keep an eye on the project page for future pre-order opportunities.
Update: As of June 8th, crowdfunding for the Pico U has been postponed. Be sure to check back with us for the latest news on this incredible home brewing machine.

The post U Brew Everything: Brewing Machine Makes Soda, Coffee, Tea, Kombucha, and More first appeared on Dornob.

Just when you thought mugs were incapable of being further innovated, here comes a new and creative variant that simplifies that little act of squeezing that burst of flavor out of your teabag.

A play on slingshot, the SlingsHOT follows a similar pull-and-release motion as you draw the string up through a pre-cut slot in the side, which in turn puts pressure on your teabag while keeping it from popping entirely out.

Designed by Samir Sufi, this simple tweak means no more messing with fingers of spoons if you are the type (as this author is) who is inclined to get the most out of each and every teabag, but who never thought there could be a simpler way.

The post Ingenious Mug Gives Tea Bags an Easy Squeeze first appeared on Dornob.

Making a nice cup of tea is one of those no-brainer activities that plenty of us do multiple times a day. We rarely think of how much energy is used to heat the water for that tea. Even if you’re using an energy-efficient electric kettle (as opposed to a stovetop one), the minimum water amount is typically at least enough for two cups of tea. If you only want one cup of tea, you’re wasting energy to heat water that you don’t need right now.

Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Nils Chudy created an intelligent way to heat water one cup at a time, right in the cup. The Dyson Award-winning Miito consists of an induction plate and a metal rod that goes into the liquid.

When the cup and rod are placed on the plate, the rod is quickly heated by an electromagnetic field which only heats ferrous materials. The Miito is extremely energy efficient because it delivers the heat directly to the water and nowhere else.

The tip of the rod is coated in silicone to create a safe, non-heated place to grab it by. Its simplified shape makes it easy to clean, so you can even use it to heat milk, soup, and coffee that’s gone cold. Any non-ferrous vessel can be used, as well, like a whole teapot or a bowl.

The overall design is streamlined and surprisingly elegant for a kitchen appliance. There is no on or off switch; removing the rod from the plate puts it into “standby” mode and the device switches on when a vessel is placed on the plate and the rod set into place. Once it heats the water and is removed, it goes back to standby, and when the rod comes to rest on the plate again it shuts off, waiting for your next cup of tea.

The post Simplici-tea: The Electric Tea Kettle, Completely Redefined first appeared on Dornob.

Tea company Boh wanted to display in a very tangible way just how much calmer a nice cup of chamomile tea can make you, and they achieved it with a beautifully simple redesign of their tea bags.
//www.youtube.com/embed/RmZSVHVmVQM?rel=0
The bags all feature figures or images looking chaotic: a growling bear, a storm cloud, an erupting volcano, and others. Once you immerse the bags in boiling water, however, the images change to much calmer ones. The bear smiles, the lightning disappears from the cloud, and the volcano becomes a calm mountain.

The ad campaign is a simple design that provides a kind of visual calm before the tea imparts its natural physical calming effect.
Heating water for tea might seem like the simplest act of your day, but most of us overfill the kettle and waste tons of energy every day. Electric kettles cost an average of £24 (or over $40 US) to operate, a number that could be greatly reduced if we had a more accurate way of telling how much water we need when filling up the kettle to boil.

The standard electric kettle doesn’t offer a very effective visual indication of how much water is being poured into it. Most have markers indicating the number of ounces or milliliters contained, but that’s an abstract concept for most minds. The KTTL from designer Anna Czaniecka saves energy by putting tea kettle portion sizes into a more understandable form: cups of tea.

The KTTL is shaped like two cups of tea stacked one atop the other. Figuring out how much water to boil for your cup of tea is as simple as filling the kettle up to the line between the two “cups” for one cup of tea, or all the way to the top for two cups.

The designer figures that British households alone could save £68 million annually by more accurately measuring their water and cutting down on wasted energy. The design was shown at the Kingston University graduate show 2014 as a 3D printed prototype. Czaniecka meant the design to highlight the problem of energy waste and hopes to one day put the product into wide-scale production.

Here’s what the designer has to say about it:

“facts:

a) kettle is one of the most energy consuming appliances
b) 75% of people in the UK overfill their kettles
c) it costs on average £24 per year to use a kettle
d) 40% of people boil a kettle 5 times a day or more

It’s hard to translate the capacity of a mug into a kettle. As a result we boil more water than we need which means using more electricity, longer boiling time and higher bills.”

KTTL is designed to get around these shortcomings, and it does so in a smart, streamlined compact package.

The post Cup-Shaped Kettle Can Save Millions in Energy Costs first appeared on Dornob.

When you love literature, every favorite book has a distinct feel to it. Your mind creates a mental ambiance that defines your experience of that particular book. Designer Flora Chan designed a series of teas that add another layer of experience to reading the classics.

Prologue teas each contain a unique blend of spices and loose tea leaves that Chan formulated based on the plots of classic literature. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Moby-Dick, Lolita, Don Quixote, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Great Gatsby are all represented in the set.

The tea tins feature pictures and motifs that characterize each novel. Sherlock Holmes’ pipe, Moby-Dick’s white whale, and Lolita’s red lips are all recognizable icons from these famous books.

The loose leaf teas and their distinctive flavors would be the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon spent reading a great classic book. It’s not often that you can imagine a whole other world while also tasting it.

Via Fast Company:

“Flora Chan’s own musings got her thinking about tea, and more specifically, what The Great Gatsby might taste like were it reincarnated into an herbal beverage. According to Chan, it’s a green tea–inspired by the symbolic green light that Fitzgerald wrote about–with notes of apple, mint, blackberries, plum, and raspberries. Whereas the zany and unpredictable world of Alice in Wonderland would taste like a (highly caffeinated) maté with mango, lemongrass, pineapple, and coconut.”

“The vibrant colors in Alice in Wonderland parallel its colorful cast of characters,” Chan tells Co.Design. “The windmills that Don Quixote infamously mistakes for giants, as well as Sherlock Holmes’s iconic pipe, are featured as well. And the whale, of course, is Moby-Dick.”

About Flora Chan:

“I am a multi-disciplinary designer and creative strategist with particular fluency in identity systems and brand experience. These days I spend most of my time researching, prototyping and conspiring about the future of brands with the fine folks at Redscout.”

The post Taste Your Favorite Tale with Literary Tea first appeared on Dornob.

The cherished ancient tea-drinking ceremony is one of the unfortunate casualties of our busy modern lives. The act of slowing down, taking time to reflect, and enjoying a simple pleasure has been largely lost among modern generations. Product Design student Hsin Lin designed her thesis project around reviving this ritual, updating the classic tea cup and saucer combo.

Lin’s design is called FIN. It redefines the way tea drinkers interact with their cups and saucers, which are nearly as important to the ritual as the tea itself. Traditionally, cups and saucers are stacked separately: the saucers in a stack and the cups lined up in a neat row. Young people, always in a hurry, tend to forget how important the saucer is and end up simply grabbing a cup in a hurry.

FIN changes that by uniting the cup and saucer into connected pieces that can be stacked together. The sleek, modern design will please the younger generations looking for just such an aesthetic. The cups are elegant white ceramic; the saucers are cork and feature a slot in one side through which the handle of the cup fits.

When united, the cups stack atop one another with the saucers at the ready. When it is time for tea, the saucers come out of the cupboard along with the cups, and the cups fit perfectly atop the saucers. The designer believes that this added convenience will help to revive the tea ritual by making it simpler and more convenient to keep up the tea ceremony tradition.

Some people are just so used to having a cup of tea every couple of hours that they can’t stand to be without it when they’re away from home. Now those people won’t have to look for a restaurant when the craving strikes, because the Novel kettle is portable enough to take literally anywhere.

Invented by Stanislav Sabo, the Novel kettle features a heatproof plastic on the outside and a lining of 100% silicone. It is the silicone that makes the kettle watertight and allows it to fold flat. It receives power from an energy source through a bayonet adapter and a cord that is attached to the removable base piece.

There are small magnets embedded in the Novel which allow the pieces to snap into place whether the kettle is opened up or folded shut. The magnets also let you conveniently hang the Novel from metal surfaces.

According to the designer, the Novel folds up small enough to fit into your back pocket. It could also easily slip into a laptop bag, purse or backpack so that wherever you go, you can always count on a cup of hot tea.

“Novel is a patented travel folding kettle which is unique due to its simple design, allowing to be folded into a minimum shape and put in the back pocket of your trousers!, into a travel bag or a laptop bag. The body of the kettle is ergonomic and made of special heatproof plastic, which is pleasing to the touch when heated to the boiling point. The inside of the kettle is made of 100% silicone, which allows its horizontal folding.”

“The source of the electric power is provided by a bayonet adapter with a supply connector to the source of the electric energy (wall sockets at home, el. car socket, el. socket of solar panels …) There are magnetic elements included in the body of the kettle, in the lid and in the adapter, which allow us to pack the kettle simply and safely and provide its fixation into operating or storage position towards the magnetic base (minimum requirements for storage space). Folded or unfolded kettle can be fixated on metal components of the side walls of vehicles, vessels or planes for medical, security, rescue and humanitarian forces!”

Some are friendly and furry, and others look poised to snap you with claws or wrap you with tentacles – from spiders to swans, you never know what you will find at the bottom of these “Creature Cups” coffee (or tea) mugs.

The exterior of each one is conspicuously identical and unassuming, so for guests come to visit for the first time, the shock will definitely catch them off guard – for those in the know, though, they will still always get a little surprise with their final sips.

“Each design comes in a color specific to its theme. The Creatures of the SEA have the Wedgewood Blue exterior. Creatures of the LAND have the Cobalt Blue exterior. The Creepy Cups have the Black exterior. The Limited Editions will vary in an array of colors. “

“The volume measurement does include the creature, which will reduce the volume by 0.5-2oz depending on the creature. The creatures do not scale with the cup, so the creature in the 11oz is the same size as the 15oz. All 11oz cups are 3.2″ height and 4.1″ diameter, weighing 0.8lbs. All 15oz cups are 3.5″ height and 4.2″ diameter, weighing 1lb. Creature bowls are 25 oz. with dimensions of 3″ height and 7″ diameter.”
