If you’re looking to give your bathroom a style makeover in the new year, use these designer-approved ideas to help it feel as fresh as possible. The hottest bathroom decor trends for 2023 play on personality, texture, visual interest, and cozy vibes to make this intimate space the peaceful home sanctuary it should be.

Freestanding Tubs

Clawfoot cast iron tubs will never go out of style, but the builder-quality jetted soaking tubs seen in many homes are getting a little tired. Often built into tiled surrounds, these behemoths are just as ugly as they are difficult to clean. This year, more people will go for reasonably sized freestanding bathtubs in interesting shapes to make their bathrooms feel more spa-like. Translucent tubs and Japanese-style soaking tubs are standout options, like this striking red tub from Cassa Design.

Cozy Colors and Bold Prints

Painting the entire bathroom white can go a long way toward making it feel fresh, but there’s a serious downside in all that visible dirt. It’s also kind of boring. Cozier, warmer color schemes will replace this outdated trend in 2023 to make the bathroom feel more comforting. Olive green, peach, and rich earth tones are among the top colors that will gain popularity this year, along with boosting the personality factor through wallpaper.

Modern stick-up wallpaper is much easier to put up and take down than its predecessor, and it’s available in virtually every print and color you can imagine on Etsy. For more traditional styles, you can’t go wrong with William Morris. This dark botanical print is from Etsy seller Los Angeles Wallpaper.

More of Your Personality

Bring warmth and personality to your bathroom with decor like antique furniture, window treatments, oil paintings, and other statement-making pieces. Some people are even adding rugs (just not too close to the toilet, of course). The idea is to decorate the bathroom more like you would the other rooms in your home instead of keeping it so sterile. Bringing in elements that really speak to who you are will not only make your bathroom more interesting to look at, it’ll also make it feel nicer to be in. Large artworks and a textural vase do just that in this bathroom by designer Sean Anderson.

Artistic Tile

Textured, decorative tile will be a hit in 2023, along with mosaics and other custom patterns. Try mixing and matching tile patterns, finding handmade options that feel really unique, or creating eye-catching geometric patterns. Terrazzo continues to be on the rise, bringing in a lot of fun speckled textures while remaining easy to clean. It often comes in large-format sizes, too, so there’s less grout to deal with. This gorgeous installation was created by designer Jamie Drake in collaboration with Cheryl Hazan Mosaic.

Mix of Old and New

Bathrooms where everything is brand new and matchy-matchy can feel a little soulless. On the other hand, you also don’t want it to feel like a time capsule. Go for a sweet spot in the middle by mixing old and new elements. For example, an antique commode is a great replacement for a vanity from a big-box store. Ornate mirrors and lighting also pop in small spaces. Here, designer Andrea Schumacher turned an old chinoiserie cabinet into a washstand with the addition of a marble waterfall top.

Statement Stone

Big slabs of statement stone also rank among this year’s top bathroom decor trends. The more dramatic, the better. It might come in the form of a bespoke vanity top, a backsplash, shower walls, or even flooring. Natural materials are preferable if possible, but you can get a similar look with materials like travertine and eco-stone. This dramatic wall is made of Elite Stone’s Calacatta Borghini Imperiale paneling.

The post 6 Spectacular Bathroom Decor Trends for 2023 first appeared on Dornob.

What design choices would you make to create an apartment that screams “David Bowie”? Paying proper tribute to one of the greatest rock and roll icons of all time is no easy task, but Sophie van Winden and Simone Gordon of London’s Owl Interior Design were up to the challenge. The duo was approached by an unnamed (but apparently very famous) British singer to draw inspiration from his most prized possession: a portrait of the Starman himself from his Ziggy Stardust period.

The unnamed singer purchased a three-bedroom apartment in a 25-story Foster + Partners complex on the banks of the River Thames, and though it had amazing views, it was basically a blank slate full of way too many beige surfaces. He wanted its interiors to be more engaging than the city outside, a perfect setting for parties full of movers and shakers. It also had to be substantially different from his other home, a converted barn in the countryside.

The artwork, itself a tight closeup on Bowie’s face, is a collage-style portrait with a faceted geometric effect. Its soft tones of blue, gold, and the dark red shock of hair provided the mood and the base palette for the space. Though the inspiration is retro, the designers still wanted the apartment to feel contemporary, so they started by ripping out the old wood floors and replacing them with marmoleum, an eco-friendly natural material that’s easy to clean. This new surface is covered in a custom pattern, with black and pale blue shapes dancing across an off-white background.

“The open and adventurous nature of the brief allowed for a bold use of color and form,” the designers explain. “Sculptural, flowing shapes echo the curved lines of the architecture, while bespoke-made pieces such as a coral-colored drinks cabinet add moments of surprise. The lively design vernacular carries through the whole apartment, including a glittering sequined toilet (complete with disco ball) that plays David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’ on a loop.”

With a bathroom as eccentric as that, the rest of the apartment had to have its own elements of delight. They come in the form of unexpected shapes and colors, like the triangular bookshelves in the living room, a graphic rug, and new kitchen tiles in a bold grid pattern. In fact, bold geometric patterns are virtually everywhere in the home, including the wallpaper, curtains, and headboards in the bedrooms, a series of custom black-and-white closet doors, and additional wall art.

“The principal bedroom was a really difficult shape as well,” Gordon adds. A bed takes up most of the room’s footprint, so the designers framed a custom headboard directly against the wall. “Its curve mirrors the shape of the room, as do the bedside tables.” Both are a rich, deep red, since “monochrome always brings a room together,” as she explains.

The oversized green velvet sofa is custom (naturally), as is the dining table, which is ringed by Noom’s Gropius chairs in a mouthwatering shade of orange. The inside of the bar cabinet echoes that color in a slightly softer hue. Fun shapes like Sella Concept’s Ladies Pond stools in the blue-gray shade of “Jesmonite” carry the abstract sculptural feel through each room.

Ultimately, the apartment does feel like a space that would make David Bowie proud. Check out the singer’s own slightly more subdued personal taste with a glimpse of the New York City apartment where he lived before his death in 2016, which sold for $16.8 million.

The post This Wild David Bowie-Inspired London Apartment Does the Late Singer Proud first appeared on Dornob.

Most people associate gypsum ceiling tiles with the ugly drop ceilings of the 60, 70s, and 80s, which usually consisted of lightweight square tiles set into a metal framework. More recently, interior designers have begun using gypsum tiles and sheets to create interesting layered ceilings. The benefits aren’t just limited to aesthetics — you can use gypsum to create a false ceiling to lower energy bills or hide utility ducts along the true ceiling. Plus, it’s great at absorbing sound.

What are Gypsum Ceilings?

Commonly used in commercial settings like offices, gypsum ceilings used to consist mostly of solid square tiles interspersed with fluorescent lighting. Today, gypsum ceilings come in all kinds of different shapes, many of which are custom-crafted to fit a particular space. Though they’re made of the same materials, gypsum ceiling tiles are often on the thinner side compared to wallboard, so they’re lighter and easier to hang.

Old-fashioned gypsum ceiling tiles can still be found at hardware stores like Home Depot, but manufacturers like Gyprock and USG make tiles specifically designed for contemporary applications. Fitted to custom-made framework systems, they can be crafted into interesting curves and layered for a collage-like effect that adds architectural interest. They’re still a great way to conceal elements like built-in lighting and HVAC systems, and they can be integrated with other materials like wood for creative results.

How to Create Contemporary Gypsum Ceiling Tiles and Designs

Gypsum ceilings are usually installed below the original ceiling of the room. The process is similar to standard wallboard and drywall suspension systems, but it tends to require more precision and a higher level of finish to get good results. The joints are finished with paper joint tape embedded with joint compound before being treated with a special ceiling compound for the final coats. The surface is then coated with a spray-applied finish, and you can paint it any color you like. All the components are designed to work together as a system.

While a very experienced DIYer might be able to craft their own custom gypsum ceiling, it’s a job better left to professionals, especially when it comes to the framework. The suspension system usually involves attaching hanger wires to the true ceiling, upon which metal crossbars are hung. More complex and curving designs sometimes use a plywood or lumber framework. When working with a contractor to create your ceiling, you can come up with whatever creative designs you can imagine, and they’ll be happy to help you bring your idea to life.

What’s the Difference Between Gypsum and Drywall?

The terms gypsum, drywall, and sheetrock are often used interchangeably. Gypsum is a naturally occurring mineral called hydrous calcium sulphate and is often used to create wallboard. It’s naturally heat and flame-resistant, soundproof, and typically comes in sheets of varying thicknesses from ¼ to ⅝ inch.

Gypsum is also the primary material used to create plaster and Plaster of Paris, which can be formed into decorative appliqués, trim work, and medallions. When applied to flat drywall ceiling surfaces, these ornate sculpted elements are also sometimes called “gypsum ceilings.” Armstrong is one brand currently using gypsum to create amazing ornate plasterwork ceilings.

Drywall, on the other hand, is made by pressing a gypsum plaster core between two pieces of heavy paper and then kiln-drying it to create a rigid material. Introduced as an alternative to labor-intensive lathe and the plaster walls and ceilings of the 1960s, it has since become one of the most popular interior finishing materials in the world. Sheetrock is simply a specific brand of drywall, but it’s come into colloquial usage as a synonym, much like “Kleenex” for tissues and “Band-aid” for bandages.

The post 12 Gorgeous Gypsum Ceilings (and How to Get Them) first appeared on Dornob.

Death, taxes, and…Elvis? A pop culture and music icon, one of America’s most enigmatic and quintessential crooners, and a movie star, to boot, Elvis has remained a ubiquitous member of the cultural milieu long after his death, and will no doubt continue to captivate fans for years to come.

The new textile and wall-covering collection from designer Catherine Martin is just the latest reminder of Presley’s continuing influence. Dubbed the “Royal Menagerie,” the collection was made for the luxe brand Mokum, itself a division of James Dunlop Textiles.

The set designer for the new movie Elvis, Martin’s vision is a sumptuous and gloriously maximalist exploration of plush, bold fabrics and eye-popping patterns — the height of 1970s opulence. The designs capture signature sights from Elvis’ world-famous Graceland home in Memphis and reimagine the lavish suite he occupied during his famed Las Vegas residency in 1969 at what was formerly the largest hotel/casino in the world, the International Hotel (now the Las Vegas Hilton).

Upon seeing the Royal Menagerie, one can almost imagine him lounging amidst its velvety landscapes, with or without his blue suede shoes. Dominated by bold, bright botanicals and immersive patterns that even Elvis himself wouldn’t sneer at, Martin’s vision is full of depth and delightfully 1970s grandeur that is as showy and complex as Presley was himself, both as a performer and as a mainstay of the American cultural consciousness.

Of course, the designs were not only inspired by Elvis’ palatial home and Las Vegas suite. They also pay tribute to the king’s penchant for audacious, fashion-forward prints that defined his on-stage persona as much as his smooth, silky voice and gyrating hips. The “Panthera” pattern in particular, with its leopard print amidst a deep gold backdrop, is a chic homage to Presley’s distinctive duds.

Meanwhile, Graceland looms large as its colorful, stained-glass peacock windows are playfully evoked by “Royal Peacock” — fabrics and wallpaper prints dominated by green jungle hues. And don’t forget the ever-present deep shag carpeting, another iconic mainstay at Graceland.

Deep hues offset the rich textures of the fabrics and textiles, but the star of the show is definitely the plush patterns, which are pure Presley. As Martin, “a child of the 70s,” herself recently noted, “I have an affinity for pattern.” Indeed, just one look at the over-the top pieces featured in this collection is enough to satisfy any Elvis fan’s wildest dreams.

The post Long Live the King: Catherine Martin Debuts Elvis-Inspired Fabrics for Mokum first appeared on Dornob.

Haute couture fashion shows are always windows into the souls of top-billed designers. Without the constraints of mass-production, cost, or even practicality, their imaginations can roam free, producing runway pieces that let us glimpse into their current personal and world views. In that freedom, designers seemed to strike upon similar themes in many cases this year. Here are some of the trends we spotted at the July 4th through 7th Paris Haute Couture Autumn/Winter Week.

Metallics

Designers are mad about metallics again, perhaps craving the flair and excitement lacking in most of our lives during the pandemic. Silvers, golds, and many other shiny hues were embraced in collections like Fendi’s, which featured a a green-and-gold evening gown with a pattern reminiscent of a cracked dinosaur egg. Similarly, Giambattista Valli softened a silver sheath dress with a fluffy pink boa, and Balenciaga draped Nicole Kidman in what looks like it could have been a giant astronaut tarp.

Flowers

Flowers and floral trends were equally big. Dior showcased traditional Ukrainian peasant flower motifs on one dress to show solidarity with the besieged country. Chanel featured a retro pattern with daisies in mint and pastel pink. Rahul Mishra placed giant orange poppies on oversized sleeves. And plenty of designers combined floral themes with metallics, like Elie Saab, who dropped an enormous silver rose on the shoulder of a sleek evening gown, and Schiaparelli, who adorned a gold-stranded bodice and skirt with lily and posy epaulets.

Oversized Jackets

With their models swimming in ridiculously oversized jackets, perhaps some designers were hinting at their pandemic-induced feelings of wanting to hide from the outside world. Or maybe it’s a tribute to the sense of being dwarfed by our circumstances. Viktor & Rolf created an entire collection of suits and dresses with shoulder lines twice their normal size, and Fendi sported a tan overcoat and pant suit that comfortably hid the figure all the way to the ground. Maison Margiela also debuted a sleeveless, metallic trench coat that’s narrowest point started at the shoulders.

Organic Shapes

Several designers played around with amorphous shapes, revealing a need to think outside the box of quarantining. For example, Iris Van Herpen created an angel-esque form out of wisps of white-to-teal strings. And Rahul Mishra crafted a bush-like drape composed of delicate metallic ivy and flowers.

Chunky Platform Shoes

Models from almost every designer strolled the catwalk in extra-chunky, sometimes geometric, platform footwear. Gaultier’s cone-breasted pregnant figures wore combat style boots with five-inch silver soles, while Stéphane Rolland put one of his models in candy-apple red, hourglass-shaped platform heels (and hot dog earrings).

Whites

Many designers included an all-white getup of some sort, perhaps a nod to the fresh start we have all sought after the past few years. Chanel created a chiffon tent with wispy black feathers, while Giambattista sent a model out in a 1950’s-style full white skirt and tailored ivory blouse.

While you aren’t likely to see these fashion artworks on the street anytime soon, there is a good chance this fall and winter’s wearables will feature hints and elements of this year’s Paris Fashion Week trends.

The post Our Favorite Trends from This Year’s Paris Fashion Week first appeared on Dornob.

If you lived through the 80s and 90s, you know there was a time when full rooms of print or floral wallpaper bisected with a coordinating border were all the rage. But the people who actually spent time in those rooms often experienced sensory overload, and the trend faded by the 21st century.

Wallpaper started showing up again in chic interiors about a decade ago, but in updated patterns and without the chair rail or ceiling borders. In just the past year though, designers and homeowners have started playing around with wallpaper borders in fresh and unique ways.

“We know that using color in homes has become increasingly popular in the past few months,” says Lucy Searle, Editor in Chief of Homes & Gardens in an interview with MSN. “We talk constantly to interior designers, and they largely cite the pandemic as the reason for this — homeowners spent the confinement of the pandemic lockdowns really examining their homes and many really craved visual joy. Paint can bring color in blocks, but wallpaper can bring rich colors along with pattern and texture, too.”

She adds that “interior designers also tell us that people are braver with color scheming and mixing patterns than they were before, which means where once a wall might have been wallpapered alone, now borders are adding that extra visual layering.”

London-based designer Susie Atkinson recently added borders to her online wallpaper offerings, telling Apartment Therapy that she loves the way they “add detail and delight in an easy, affordable way.” She says borders are catching on again because they are “less of a commitment than wallpapering the whole room but still bring that color and interest to walls adding an accent to contrast or complement a room. The possibilities with them are endless.”

When wallpaper originally got its start in the 16th century, it was hung on walls with copper tacks instead of glue, and borders came into vogue to discreetly cover up the tacks. “For centuries, borders have been used in decorating — historically, often to hide imperfections in a room or a wallpapering technique, to complement the design, or, as is often thought in recent years, as a sometimes not-so-stylish addition to a scheme,” Kate Hawkins, founder of wallpaper business CommonRoom told House & Garden.

Thankfully, modern methods have freed borders from their practical intent, and they can be pasted on almost anywhere. Today’s trendy borders are graphic and playful. Stripes and clean geometric patterns are popular, but so are small print florals, reminiscent of some of the earlier 80s designs.

You can find Instagram posts with wallpaper borders outlining door or window frames or highlighting an entire entryway. Not only are they being used to line ceilings and create chair rail details, but they’re also being in placed around joinery detail like under the tread of staircases or along the cornices of a closet. One designer even plastered border to form a patterned corona for his ornate bed.

For those looking to add a little style to their home without taking on an entire remodel, today’s fun and clean wallpaper borders are an affordable and less labor-intensive way to bring in the “wow” factor.

The post Wallpaper Borders are Making a Modern-Day Comeback first appeared on Dornob.

Cottagecore, emotional decor, cluttercore — the list goes on and on. If there’s one thing you can count on in the design world, it’s that home decor has its own revolving door of shifting, ever-changing trends. Now, another aesthetic seems to be settling into the minds and homes of those in the know. Meet “grandmillennial.”

On the surface, this term (coined by House Beautiful) may seem like an oxymoron — the “jumbo shrimp” of the design world, if you will. But get ready to see it everywhere for the foreseeable future. But what exactly is it?

Think Grandma chic; nostalgic, traditional trends like chintz; and bold Victorian patterns and furniture that are cozily eclectic and fabulously floral — a revolt against the dull minimalism that’s dominated the interiors space in the last few years.

With grandmillennial decor, vintage pieces are so much more than furniture — they’re storytellers. Much like Gen X-ers finding their nostalgia in the midcentury modern design of their forebears, here, millennials are finding inspiration in more Victorian, neoclassical styles that are evergreen and easily attainable.

Want to try out the trend for yourself? Here are some must-have pieces that would make any granny proud:

Gotta Have that Chintz

Chintz is definitely the it-pattern when it comes to grandmillennial style, and the more the better. Think cozily contrasting patterns and colors that highlight that granny chic vibe.

Floral Faves

You’ve got the chintz nailed. Now mix and match with some floral patterns for some truly cozy feels.

Tafton Floral Club Accent Chair From Target — $290.54

Technology has allowed us to maintain connections despite pandemic-induced distances, but in the process, we’ve lost even more of the tangible, physical interactions that had already begun to erode before COVID-19 arrived on the scene. For the triumphant return of Milan Design Week 2021 after its cancellation of in-person activities in 2020, French luxury brand Hermés wanted to restore that sense of physicality and materiality in typically dramatic fashion.Their exhibit transformed an indoor court at the city’s La Pelota venue into a tiny village of rustic, textural structures adorned with bold graphic patterns and vivid hues.

Resting on a bed of orange sand to mimic the feel of being in the desert, five organically shaped “houses” set the stage for the new Hermés collection, along with a selection of objects and fabrics by other designers. A team of set designers working for La Scala aided frequent Hermés collaborator Charlotte Macaux Perelman in the creation of an immersive environment that makes you feel as if you’ve traveled to remote places to discover finely crafted treasures.

The designers took inspiration from traditional cultures that build their vernacular architecture out of earth, lime, or plaster and paint the exteriors by hand. Checkerboard patterns, diagonal lines, plaids, and other motifs commonly found in Hermés designs enlarge graphic design to the scale of architecture, begging the question of why we’ve collectively gotten ourselves into such an artless contemporary architecture rut. The structures envision a new trend in which organic materials are complemented by modern prints on all sorts of exteriors.

But of course, this little village is just the beginning of the experience. As a custom soundscape plays softly in the background, visitors navigating the space duck into each house to view objects emphasizing connections between materials: the softness of an armchair made of paper-based microfiber, and a white cashmere blanket contrasting the solidity of a chiseled stone table. Among these is an organically shaped chair by Studio Mumbai with a hand-varnished and hand-painted wooden frame, described by the brand as “robust, sensual, and totemic.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Graphic textiles featured in Hermès 2021 Milan Design Week display.
Other items in the collection include Sialk table centerpieces crafted from copper foil and colored with stenciled enamels, colorful Phi boxes arranged to echo the proportions of the golden ratio, vases, trays, stools, and porcelain dinnerware. Those of us who didn’t get to the event in person still won’t get a sense of the physicality of the objects, of course, but the exhibit marks a desire to find a balance between the digital and the tangible.

“This year, materials continue to be a major focus for the new home collections,” says Hermés. “Through their intrinsic characteristics, they determine the shape of a line, a type of motif, a creation. They are vibrant and express something that is built up, that “demands” a transformation and encourages new uses. The new collections play on raw and natural materials, incorporating unique fields of know-how.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Bold geometric patterns printed on the side of a building in Hermès ' Milan Design Week display.
They add that “oscillating between tradition and innovation, know-how is a fundamental part of the creative process. Pushing back their limits and reinventing unique know-how by working with leather, textiles, metals, and stone while ensuring precise lines: the inquisitive soul of the artisan dreams of useful objects that transcend time. The new collections embrace the simplicity of an elegance that gives way to refinement and comfort.”

The post Hermès Creates a Hand-Painted Indoor Village for Milan Design Week 2021 first appeared on Dornob.

Interior design trends are always influenced by changes in culture. The social distancing and working-from-home adjustments of the past two years are definitely affecting what we put in our homes today, as well as what we’re throwing out. Here are eight previously cool styles that will likely end up looking dated very soon.

Industrial Design

While it was super hip to have bare pipes and bulbs for a minute, stark and warehouse-like industrial decor is quickly becoming too cold and grim for our current pandemic conditions. People are looking for cozy, welcoming, and warm spaces to soothe their frazzled home-bound nerves. Industrial touches in strategic places will remain chic, of course, but an entire house full of them just isn’t desirable anymore. In fact, a recent survey of 2,4000 people by UK-based home improvement resource HomeHow found that 61 percent of respondents are already regretting going overboard on industrial decor.

Open Shelving

That same survey found that another 52 percent of respondents regretted switching out their wall cabinets for open shelving. Sure, those dishes and glasses look pretty on the shelves in the magazines, but in real life – the one where we’re all stuck at home more than usual – open shelves aren’t so practical. If dishes are close to the stove, they can attract grease or dust. Plus, compared to wall cabinets, open shelves can seriously reduce storage space and look cluttered if not properly arranged each and every time.

Shiplap and Barn Doors

Thanks to the genius styles of Joanna Gaines, farmhouse decor found a serious following in the 2010s. Still, it can feel terribly out of place in, for example, an urban condo. Today, houses full of shiplap (wooden wall siding) and rolling barn doors are quickly fading from popularity and can be very expensive to undo. If you’re still digging this look, consider a few minor rustic touches and muted colors to satisfy your cravings without a forever commitment.

Large Wallpaper Patterns

Oversized wallpaper patterns are certainly dramatic, but amid all the COVID craziness, most people want less drama in their lives, not more. Large, bold wall coverings are now dwindling in popularity as people seek designs that are more soothing and inviting.

Bold Bathroom Tiles

A similar philosophy is starting to prevail with flashy bathroom tiles. As it is, most patterns and colors circulate in and out of trendiness every few years. And while putting in a trendy pattern could make your space the talk of the town for a bit, it’ll cost you a pretty penny to redo when it finally falls out of fashion favor. If you really love eye-catching patterns, try choosing one with mostly neutral hues. Then you can add extra color through paint and accessories.

Rose Gold Metal

Metal finishes are notorious for shifting quickly in their trendiness. Brass was très chic in the 90s, while oil-rubbed bronze was the “it” look of the 2000s. Now rose gold has had its moment, too, but it’s already headed for the out door. If you still love rose gold, opt for using it in decorative accents, like floor lamps, instead of installing it permanently in your fixtures.

Terrazzo Tile

Known for its playful flecks of color, terrazzo tile came back into fashion in recent years, especially thanks to celebrities like Mandy Moore bringing its midcentury flair into their homes. Unfortunately, its appeal will seem old-fashioned again before long. Choosing a peel-and-stick terrazzo tile wallpaper could allow you to enjoy the look for the moment and easily remove it when it’s totally out again.

Minimalism

Since so many Americans spent so much of the past year at home, the minimalistic, straight lines that held sway in the past are quickly falling from grace. People are now looking for softer contours, comfier textures, and all-around more layered spaces. Plus, the sparse and austere lifestyle became way less attainable as parents, children, and pets sat cooped up in their homes for months. The ultra-sleek style is subsequently giving way to the practicality of stuff ending up everywhere.

As we adapt to life in a post-pandemic world, our sense of style is also being revised. If any of these changes in interior design trends make you sad though, don’t worry. They rotate often enough that your favorites will probably come around again, even if they’re in slightly different forms and 20 years in the future.

The post 8 Interior Design Trends You’ll Be Regretting Before Long first appeared on Dornob.

Most people think of wall tiles as an accent material for the bathroom and kitchen to provide a bit of water resistance and perhaps a touch of pattern. Rarely do you see them splashed across an entire room, especially not in a bold mix of colors and motifs. The fact that tile is usually so time-consuming to install probably has something to do with it, but this apartment in Chongqing, China by 000 Design proves that using tile as a primary design statement can be well worth the effort.

The owners of this 1,065-square-foot two-bedroom apartment facing a forested hillside clearly aren’t risk-averse. They trusted the youthful architects and interior designers of 000 Design to craft a home bursting with personality, incorporating unexpected materials, clashing patterns, vivid colors, and most of all, fun. From the moment you walk in the door, you know you aren’t in an ordinary apartment.

The designers decided to throw out conventional ideas about how the feel of a home should be different from that of a business. Why not incorporate elements you’d normally see in high-end retail or commercial design instead of intimate residential spaces, if it results in a space that still feels relaxing and inspiring?

“With the development of internet and society, people spend more time living and working at their own dwelling,” says 000 Design. “We are willing to change the stereotype of a residence space which originally should be only cozy, warm, and relaxing. We hope this apartment also shows an impression of passion, fashion, and visual impact, [giving] a different attitude of the lifestyle with more freedom and maybe a little more [angst].”

An abstract mosaic of red, pink, yellow, blue, and white hexagonal tiles unifies the entire home, surrounding the main entrance and continuing inside the primary bedroom on several walls and ceilings. The small size and random patterns of this mosaic are contrasted by larger, more minimalist square white tile on the floor and on the walls of the bathroom. Out in the main living space, another tile motif in black, white, and gray brings a sense of geometric order to a balcony overlooking the landscape. Large glass walls and crystal-clear furniture keep the visual emphasis on the pattern and the view.

Careful editing is a big part of what makes the “Live & Fun” apartment a success. What the designers left out is just as important as what they brought in, leaving blank spaces for the eye to rest before moving on to the next chaos of color. In the hallways and living areas, smooth white surfaces are augmented by pale wood built-ins offering storage space, tables, and benches. The kitchen and dining nook are cut into two expanses of white built-in cabinetry, each one bedecked in neon colors for a striking jewel box effect. The lack of cabinet hardware helps the space feel clean and orderly.

And let’s not forget the ceilings, because the designers sure didn’t. Most noteworthy is the mirrored ceiling that visually elongates the common living spaces, augmented by lighting contained within red, green, and yellow acrylic boxes. A metallic ceiling surface perforated with thousands of tiny triangles complements the tile and doubles as a unique light source.

The post Colorful Tile Mosaics Brighten Up a Modern Chinese Apartment by 000 Design first appeared on Dornob.

When everybody does their back to school shopping at the same big-box stores, there isn’t a lot of room for individuality. And who wants to decorate their entire dorm room only to find that their roommate has an identical setup? If you really want to establish your own unique sense of style, branch out beyond the chain stores of the world and look to sites like Society6 instead. With thousands of artists contributing to a seemingly endless selection of amazing home goods, Society6 has something for everyone, and their five new back to school collections make it easy to find exactly what you need.

That’s right, Society6 has not one, not two, but five curated 2021 Back to School Must-Have Collections to choose from: bedding kits, posters, tapestries, on-the-go essentials, and tech accessories. Whether you’re off to college or eagerly awaiting the first day of high school, you’ll find everything you need to put the finishing touches on your living space, gussy up your locker, and strut through the hallways in style. Available items include sheets, blankets, pillow cases, shower curtains, art prints, phone cases, laptop sleeves, Apple Watch bands, travel mugs, stickers, notebooks, and apparel.

Society6 also identified four major back-to-school decor trends for this upcoming semester. They include warped and checked prints, “blending the groovy patterns of the 60s and 70s with soothing color palettes”; playful and organic themes featuring bright colors and designs inspired by nature; retro 60s flair “for the flower child in us all”; and “neon dreams,” a vaguely surreal Los Angeles-inspired style. Among the coolest stuff we spotted are a “groovy garden in blue” duvet cover, a fun Rodeo Drive poster featuring upside-down cars in a pastel sky, a Keith Haring laptop sleeve, and all kinds of cute terrazzo print backpacks.

If you’re not sure where to start or could use some help figuring out how to blend your own style with your roommate’s, the retailer offers a guide to decorating with roommates that’s full of helpful advice. For instance, you’re going to want to make your desk a warm and inviting place where you can focus, so adding some small art prints with inspirational quotes or inspiring views could be a big help. Add personality to big walls with posters just by tacking them up with putty or pins, but try not to hog all the space. And if you end up with a roomie whose style clashes with yours, embrace it. It’ll just make your stuff stand out even more.

Don’t forget the all-important study nook. The guide explains that “since studying is a pivotal part of the college experience, it’s helpful to create a space that comforts and inspires you. Start with a plush throw — crafted from our super-soft signature Sherpa fleece! Perhaps you want a geometric floral design, colorful checkered squares, or a simple abstract design. Then, add an abundance of rectangular and throw pillows that complement the design/color of your throw blanket. As an added bonus, tie in your study nook together with a rug that fits the energy of the room.”

Did we mention that all Society6 designs are submitted by the artists themselves? Not only do you get access to virtually any style you can think of, but your purchase directly supports independent artists. And if you somehow don’t find exactly what you’re looking for after browsing the site, you can always become a Society6 designer yourself! It’s super easy to upload your own designs and end up with stuff that’s completely and totally you.

The post Make Your Back to School Style Totally Unique with Society6’s 2021 Shopping Guide first appeared on Dornob.

Summer is in full swing, which means there are new looks for your entire wardrobe, including your nail style. Here are some of this year’s coolest trends to help you celebrate exotic vacations, backyard barbecues, swim parties, and baseball games again.

Smoky Swirls

Wisps of swirling smoke snaking across nude nails like these from Instagram’s @imarninails are having a moment right now. Best of all, the swirls can be any color, creating gorgeous abstract art.

Pastel Tips and Cuticles

Pastel colors are trending hardcore. People can’t get enough of those baby blues and yellows, sage greens and light lavenders. One way to enjoy the pastel palette in a fresh way is to paint just the cuticles and tips like in this photo from @moshbeautystudio on Instagram.

Velvet Nails

Nails that look like they have the texture of shimmering velvet fabric took over the 2020 holiday nail scene, and they’re still going strong. This incredible technique is all about choosing the right products. Getting the perfect velvet nails requires gels with fine metallic particles and chromo powders to blend into the perfect consistency.

Texture

Instead of just making your nails look like they have texture, give them the real thing.
This is just part of what one can expect from the newest collab from Italian super brands Lamborghini and Zambaiti Parati. This is the second collaborative collection from the iconic pair (the first was released in January 2019), and this time they’ve created newer and even more amazing wallpaper designs that illustrate their teamwork and partnership in the best way possible.

Zambaiti Parati has long been known as a quality, high-end producer of wall coverings that wow, and Automobili Lamborghini’s sleek, fast car aesthetic is instantly recognizable, creating the overall feeling of peak automobile innovation. Who better to create a dynamic collection that’s both classic and modern, with a design aesthetic that, if not instantly recognizable, is at least instantly appealing?

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Stunning textural examples of the wallpaper prints available in the new Lamborghini and Zambaiti Parati collection.
Evoking a feeling of three-dimensionality, and with a depth that echoes the movement of a lightning-fast sports car, this most recent collection has taken the brands’ vision to the next level with stunning optics and warm tones like copper and natural green, in addition to more neutral grays that are anything but dull.

The relationship goes back to 2017, when Zambaiti Parati began their exploration of the distinctive Lamborghini look, drawing inspiration from the brand’s clean lines and uber-dynamic feel. Pairing closely with Lamborghini’s Centro Stile (the brand’s famous in-house design department), that collection successfully married Zambaiti Parati’s attention to detail and flair for immersive, almost tactile, designs with the luxury car manufacturer’s signature look, inspired by materials and even influenced by car parts. Centro Stile even scanned certain pieces to create more visually-impactful effects that saturate the collection, imbibing it with a depth that’s almost surreal. One’s eye is immediately captured and entranced by the sense of movement and texture as the wallpaper seems to breathe with a life of its own.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Stunning textural examples of the wallpaper prints available in the new Lamborghini and Zambaiti Parati collection.
And this newest collection takes that effect to the next level. The thick wallpaper is solid yet fluid, functional yet luxurious. Its quality is meant to further reflect Lamborghini’s composite parts that focus on inventive, innovative precision with regard to both overall design and materials. This translates into textures that are almost industrial in their feel — fireproof and durable, easy to install and replace, yet delicate and deep, complicated and immersive in their appearance.

While the first collaboration was the backdrop for Automobili Lamborghini’s luxe lounges and prestigous presentations around the world, settings meant to appeal to a diverse clientele accustomed to the car manufacturer’s combination of class and dynamism, the new 2021 collection is aimed to appeal to a broader international market, and is suitable for both commercial and residential use.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Stunning textural examples of the wallpaper prints available in the new Lamborghini and Zambaiti Parati collection.
With two iconic names that embrace the ethos and vision of “Made in Italy” – a concept that reflects and embodies singular Italian creativity and forward-thinking innovation – the 2021 collaboration from Lamborghini and Zambaiti Parati is a stunning and evocative take on the distinctive look of these iconic brands and their far-reaching, world-famous aesthetics.

The post Sleek New Lamborghini X Zambaiti Parati Collab Actually Makes Wallpaper Cool first appeared on Dornob.

The Mediterranean island of Sicily has maintained such a distinct culture and history from the rest of Italy, it might as well be its own nation. Set just across the Strait of Sicily from Tunisia, this stunning volcanic landscape has been a cultural crossroads for millennia, influenced by Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Phoenician, North African and other cultures for an unparalleled flavor that remains truly unique.

That extends to its interior design style, too. Sicilian decor is the next big thing, bursting with rustic materials, lush textures, and colorful patterns that’ll have you feeling like you’re lounging on a sun-baked terrazza overlooking the sea. Here are four simple tips for incorporating this up-and-coming trend into your home:

Textural Accents

Image: Casa Talia by Vivian Haddad and Marco Giunta

Old, weathered items with lots of character and natural materials like wood and woven seagrass will bring an essential rustic element to your Sicily-inspired decor. If you find a clay jug, copper pot, or antique oil painting at a thrift store that’s a little dinged up, all the better. Items that proudly bear their age and sense of history will keep your freshly updated decor from looking as if you just picked up a bunch of cheap reproductions from a-big box store. If you’re up for a bigger project, you might even consider plastering an accent wall for the look of a real Sicilian grotto home (or achieving a similar effect with all natural, zero-VOC lime paint from Color Atelier).

Warm Tones

Image: Trend Design Book

When it comes to color, don’t be afraid to go bold here. Saturated hues in warm tones like marigold, poppy, umber, and sienna paired with Mediterranean blue invoke the cheerful scenery of Sicilian streets, where vivid murals complement crumbling stone walls, cobblestone pavers, and marble archways. For inspiration, check out Dolce and Gabbana’s “Divina Cucina” collaboration with fellow Italian brand Smeg. Released back in 2017, the collection isn’t available anymore, but it’s a great reference for beautiful color combinations and could even inspire a little hand painting of your own.

Colorful Patterns and Motifs

Image: Giammona House via That’s Taormina

Speaking of murals and hand-painted accents, patterns are a huge component of Sicilian style. One of the most common motifs you see in Sicily is the Triskelion, the three-legged woman that appears on the official flag of the autonomous Sicilian region (as seen above on the facade of Giammona House in Taormina). Suns, citrus fruits, flowers, and Greek-inspired patterns are also popular. One easy way to incorporate traditional Sicilian patterns into your decor is through maiolica ceramic tiles, which are also sometimes translated into textiles. Short of traveling to Sicily in person, Etsy might be the next-best source for maiolica treasures.

Mix and Match Style

Image: Adesso Villa in Sicily by The Thinking Traveller

To modernize your Sicilian-style interiors, just mix in plenty of modern and contemporary elements, and remember to edit carefully. The difference between effortlessly chic and old-fashioned Nonna can come down to a streamlined leather sofa, a backdrop of minimalist white walls, and stripped-down statement lighting like this natural brass Mondrian chandelier featuring hand-blown Murano glass spheres. And resist the urge to fill in every open area to maintain a healthy balance of negative space and interesting focal points.

Main image: Masseria d’Estia Villa via The Thinking Traveller

The post 4 Easy Ways to Infuse Your Home Decor with Sun-Drenched Sicilian Style first appeared on Dornob.

Still creating excitement and introspection at age 92, contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama just opened a showcase of her latest pumpkin-inspired work at the New York Botanical Garden.

“Kusama: Cosmic Nature” is a combination of her past and recent art in an attempt to conceptualize her relationship with nature. Larger-than-life flowers loom over visitors, ancient oak trees get mummified in polka-dotted fabric, and enormous pumpkins dance and spread into eternity.

“It’s not just about the earthly botanical nature but also this expansion of nature being something that expands infinitely into the cosmos,” said NYBG guest curator Mika Yoshitake in an interview with Architectural Digest.

She added that “nature is much more of a visceral inspiration for her. There’s this constant mode of change — cycles of decay, death, or rebirth — that are constant themes that you can see throughout her work.”

As a young girl in Matsumoto, Japan, Kusama spent many hours in her grandparents’ commercial nursery, drawing the plant life that surrounded her (one of her teenage sketch books is also on display as part of the exhibit). Later on, she began to see optical patterns in the flowers and gourds around her.

“Her grandfather took her through fields of various flowers, like zinnias and peonies, as well as pumpkin patches,” explained Yoshitake. “She remembers pulling the stem out of one of the pumpkins and the insides oozing out. She has these very visceral memories of the plant vegetation and the pumpkins.”

Of the popular gourd, Kusama herself told Forbes, “It seems that pumpkins do not inspire much respect. But I was enchanted by their charming and winsome form.”

About the new installation, curator Toshitake says “What was really thrilling for this exhibition was working with the artist in thinking about large-scale installations that were absolutely unique to the botanical garden and not something we could do in a museum.”

One of the most show-stopping pieces is a 16-foot bright yellow and black “Dancing Pumpkin.” “I Want to Fly to the Universe” is also a standout, a giant aluminum sun with asymmetrical red and blue beams hovering over the Reflecting Pond. And the artist’s 1966 “Narcissus Garden” gets resurrected in the artificial wetland of the Native Plant Garden. Originally debuted (without an invitation) at the Venice Biennale, Kusama’s 1,400 reflective steel balls ask visitors to engage in self-reflection as the orbs echo the light around them while flowing and weaving through the water.

“Pumpkins Screaming About Love Beyond Infinity” is a five-square-foot glass cube filled with LED-lit acrylic gourds. They light up one at a time until the box panels change into two-way mirrors, reflecting an endless array of orange. A free-standing mirrored “Infinity Room” will also be opening in the summer.

The “Flower Obsession” is an “obliteration greenhouse” where patrons are encouraged to transform the space by adding coral-colored dot stickers to the strategically-placed furniture and household items.

“Our earth is only one polka dot among a million stars in the cosmos,” Kusama says. “Polka dots are a way to infinity. When we obliterate nature and our bodies with polka dots, we become part of the unity of our environment. I become part of the eternal and we obliterate ourselves with love.”

As an artist, Kusama is known for her spotted pop art, but she has given herself plenty of creative exploratory space over the years, venturing into painting, performance, film, fashion, poetry, and fiction.

“Kusama: Cosmic Nature” will run through October 31st, with timed-entry tickets available now through June 30th on the New York Botanical Garden website.

The post Yayoi Kusama Covers New York’s Botanical Garden in Pumpkins and Polka Dots first appeared on Dornob.

In interior design terms, a vignette is simply a grouping of items. Look around your home and you’ll likely find you already have some displays on tabletops, bookcases, or shelves.

Mostly, vignettes draw the eye, creating interesting focal points within a space. And while they can make for a great way to proudly put your prized possessions on display, vignettes can just as easily turn into overcluttered eyesores. These pointers will help you assemble well-designed vignettes that look natural rather than staged.

Focus on Style

While your vignette could comprise a collection of similar items, it doesn’t have to. Feel free to lay out your sand samples from around the world, but pull together a look by also adding some shells and a starfish, or a framed photo of the family on the beach. After all, the whole idea of style is to group like items without singling out too much of the same thing.

Image via Mercury News

This is true for any type of display pieces. For example, if you collect historic artifacts, putting them all on a shelf together can get overwhelming quick. Instead, try placing all the pieces from particular eras together in smaller groups. If you only have a few pieces, couple them with framed artwork, historical information, or tapestries.

As another example, say you want to feature a cultural theme such as Hawaiian or Spanish. Vignettes offer the opportunity to bring in elements that create discussion without completely smothering the space in the theme. So instead of parrots on a wire and sombreros hanging from the ceiling, place your favorite Mexican souvenirs in a grouping that will naturally bring out the wanderlust in any visitor.

Add Spacing

Image via HGTV

Pay special attention to how you place items together. Always make sure your vignettes are adequately spaced, and do your best to avoid blocking one item with another. If you have too many items for one area, create two vignettes instead!

Create Height

Image via Smitty’s Fine Furniture

Items that are all the same size and shape are boring for the eye. Instead, vary the heights of everything in the display. Even if the entire collection is made up of seashells, you can still put them in vases of various sizes, with taller ones in the back and loose shells in the front. If your items truly are all the same size, consider adding risers to the back row to at least create multiple tiers.

Texture

Image via StyleBlueprint

Again, mix it up! Along with the smooth glass of pictures and jars, throw in some coarse fabric and a candle. You’ll likely find your collection already provides a variety of textures. For example, a tribal vignette might house a wood mask, a ceramic plate, and a woven basket. Although very different in the materials, the different textures add depth and visual interest while the common theme holds it all together.

Colors

Image via Houzz

Make sure there’s some color contrast between the background and the display. Let’s face it: all white animal figurines against a white bookcase just aren’t going to make much of a statement. Instead, place a colorful image against the back panel to accent the white items in the front.

Personalization

Image via TLC

Remember to make your vignette your own. It should bring you joy. If it doesn’t, consider if it’s because it’s too cluttered, too boring, or too unorganized. Also add those items that make it personal to you. The fun roller coaster pic from an amusement park, a keychain you bought from a beach vendor, the portrait drawn by a local street artist, the mug given to you by an AirBnb host – all of these things will allow you to relive happy, meaningful memories every time you enter the room.
