Traditional cement production accounts for 8 percent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, but the world isn’t exactly going to stop using concrete anytime soon. What’s the solution? A greener replacement. BioBased tiles might be just the thing we need, offering the strength and durability of conventional cement with a fraction of the waste and carbon emissions. Developed as a collaboration between StoneCycling and Biomason, the new material began as an experiment to imitate the way nature grows ultra-strong materials like coral.

The project combines StoneCycling’s expertise in construction waste mitigation with Biomason’s innovative biocement, a binder that produces a material made by bacteria and sand. Combined with StoneCycling’s recaptured mineral waste, the biocement becomes a tile that’s three times stronger and 20 percent lighter than typical concrete masonry while maintaining a near-zero carbon footprint. And while conventional cement takes 28 days to fully cure, precast modules of BioBased tile cure in just 72 hours.

Ginger Krieg Dosier, co-founder and CEO of Biomason, has spent the last nine years searching for a way to “grow” cement bricks and tiles with bacteria. The process sounds pretty fascinating. Biomason uses natural micro-organisms to produce carbon-based material in ambient temperatures just like coral does in nature, though exactly how they manage to do that is apparently proprietary information.

That carbon is combined with calcium to produce biocement materials, which can even be seeded with marine microorganisms to give it self-healing abilities and enable it to anchor itself to the ocean floor and create marine infrastructure, breakwater assemblies, and near-shore sediment stabilization.

BioBased tiles shape the biocement into easy-to-use modules with all sorts of applications, so it can be used almost exactly like traditional concrete. They’ve been installed at businesses around the world, including the Dropbox headquarters in California and Helix Lab in Denmark. More recently, Biomason struck a deal with retailer H&M to install it in many of the company’s 5,000-plus retail locations around the world.

If it continues to take off, this bio-based material could make a huge environmental impact. Concrete’s carbon footprint is currently larger than the entire aviation industry and those of the countries of China and India. It’s also the second most in-demand substance in the world after water. Biomason estimates that its biocement could eliminate 25 percent of the concrete industry’s global carbon emissions by 2030.

“The demand for low-carbon building materials is clear,” says StoneCycling’s Massa. The aim of our partnership with Biomason is to accelerate the use of sustainable building materials and architecture even further. We share the belief in our collective ability to solve climate change, and we’re thrilled to be working with Biomason on new low-carbon products to revolutionize the construction industry.”

“Since our inception 10 years ago, we have focused not only on disrupting the cement industry with groundbreaking technology, but also in establishing a licensing and partnership ecosystem to enable broad adoption of our solutions throughout the construction industry,” Krieg Dosier says. “StoneCycling will be a key partner as we scale commercially and bring BioBased tiles to the European market.”

The post BioBased Tiles: Bacteria Used to Grow Strong and Sustainable Cement Alternative first appeared on Dornob.

For some people, a regular-sized TV or even a projector screen just won’t do. When you’re hosting movie nights in an oversized space and want the highest-quality viewing experience possible, nothing beats an actual screen – especially a MicroLED screen. Samsung’s “The Wall” has entered the market as a high-end solution, and a year after offering 110-inch models for more than $150,000, they’ve added slightly smaller 101-inch and 89-inch models to the lineup. Unveiled at CES 2022, the new versions of The Wall boast the same display technology composed of millions of tiny LEDs to rival the picture quality of OLED with even better brightness.

The size isn’t the only thing that changed in the 2022 update to The Wall. Samsung’s new MicroLED technology also supports 20-bit grayscale depth, which means it can express the tiniest details in a scene, offering unprecedented control with over one million degrees of brightness and color levels. It also expresses 100 percent of DCI and Adobe RGB color gamut for a spectrum of incredibly lifelike colors that’s rare in any display.

“Art mode” is another update, which lets customers turn what could be a massive eyesore on their wall into a giant piece of art when it’s not in use. “Multi view” lets users view content from four different sources simultaneously in 4K resolution at up to 120 frames per second, and Dolby Atmos delivers an immersive audio experience with top, side, and bottom channel speakers for multidimensional sound. Ultra-low reflection black technology keeps the colors true.

People will certainly use these enormous TVs in their multi-million dollar mansions, but Samsung envisions them appearing much more commonly in places like automotive showrooms and corporate boardrooms as well as government, hospitality, retail, and healthcare settings. The Wall can also be custom-ordered in all kinds of shapes to fit existing environments.

Here’s a breakdown of what makes MicroLED TVs so pricey, other than the sheer size. All modern televisions are lit by light-emitting diodes in some form, usually a series of hundreds or thousands of LED lights behind or on the edges of an LCD screen. The LCD actually creates the image using color filters of quantum dots on some TVs. OLEDs work a little differently with pixels made of a material that glows when powered up with electricity; these electroluminescent materials are the organic compounds that give the “O” to OLED. The amount of energy sent to each pixel changes its intensity. MicroLEDs, on the other hand, eliminate the need for an LCD layer all together, creating the color and light with all those tiny, expensive LEDs instead.

Someday soon, MicroLED will likely eclipse OLED as the standard display technology on higher-end televisions and become more affordable. In the meantime, we’ll be seeing absolutely wild price tags over $100K for offerings like The Wall and other MicroLED TVs by brands like LG and Sony. If a television that costs almost as much as a starter home in a small city sounds crazy to you, you probably haven’t heard of LG’s DVLED wall-sized TVs measuring up to 325 inches wide, some of which will set you back a whopping $1 million dollars.

The post Samsung’s The Wall: Here’s What a $150,000 TV Looks Like first appeared on Dornob.

Walking on eggshells used to be a bad thing, but not anymore, now that sustainable design studio Nature Squared has transformed them into some of the most stunning organic tiles you’ve ever seen. British-Chinese textile designer and weaver Elaine Yan Ling Ng worked with Nature Squared to produce Carrelé, a new collection of multipurpose wall and floor tiles that transform a waste material into something truly beautiful through a circular design approach.

Every year, about 250,000 tons of eggshell waste is produced around the world, and most of it ends up in landfills. Ng developed a new way to incorporate them into a composite formula base design that acts as a bonding agent. Up to 3,000 eggshells go into every square meter of tile, laid out in designs that draw from East Asia’s traditional eggshell inlay art. The shells are cracked, roasted, colored, and laid out by hand to produce distinctive organic patterns, colors, and textures, some of which closely resemble snakeskin. The way the shells interact with the specific dyes, some crushed so small you can’t even tell what they are anymore, produces an effect that’s truly one of a kind. They’re also smooth and easy to clean, so they can be used in demanding places like kitchens and bathrooms.

“We tend to associate eggshells with fragility, but they’re actually very strong and naturally UV-resistant,” Ng told Wallpaper. “They also absorb natural colors sustainably in fascinating ways, making them a wonderful building material. We use natural dyes, such as indigo, madder, and chlorophyll.”

Eggshells are just the latest natural material to be transformed into beautiful tiles by Nature Squared. While some are more conventional, like bamboo, leaves, vines, mother of pearl, capiz, and other seashells, others are equally surprising, like feathers, bone, and skin. The use of animal products can be controversial, but Nature Squared notes that these materials are byproducts of the food industry, coming from animals like chickens, cows, and fish, and would otherwise go to waste. But while the pieces from those collections make the sources look identifiable, with a more literal result, Carrelé is decidedly more abstract.

Prior to this eggshell tile project, Nature Squared worked more on custom projects rather than reproducible products. Their furniture, wall panels, and mirrors are frequently installed in places like private jets, superyachts, palaces, and villas for some of the world’s richest people. Co-founders Lay Kool Tan and Paul Hoeve brought in Ng to help create new methods and products that can divert larger volumes of waste away from landfills and broaden the potential for the company to make a difference with their circular design strategy.

Most people associate macrame with kitschy 1970s decor and the kind of bohemian revival home stuff you can find at Urban Outfitters. But macrame is actually an ancient fiber art, first appearing in the carvings of Babylonians and Assyrians to depict the garb of the day. Its name derives from the Arabic word macramia, meaning “ornamental fringe,” and its usage has been documented for centuries all over the world. It can be decorative, adorning items like bedspreads and curtains, or functional, crafted by sailors to cover knife handles and parts of ships.

In Bali, Jakarta-born artist Agnes Hansella has crafted what might be three of the largest macrame works of art ever made. Her trio of woven rope installations, hanging from the ceiling of an open-air structure in the coastal town of Jimbaran, each span more than 37 feet wide and dangle almost two stories from the apex of the roof. Hansella took inspiration from the local environment for these coverings, designing each one to represent the wildlife and geographical features found nearby, like coral, birds, and ocean waves.

Respectively named “Mountain,” “Ocean,” and “Sunset,” these monumental macrame installations were woven alongside a team of artists at Locca Beach House Bali. Using 16-millimeter manila rope, which was cut with a hacksaw, the team spent 12 days on handmade bamboo scaffolding, working with Hansella’s vision but adding their own creative contributions along the way. Indeed, the longer you look at each piece, the more fun little details you can find, like the outlines of mountains and wings.

“This enormous piece is fun and challenging for me to work with,” Hansella says. “With macrame, sometimes we can’t plan the whole thing in one go. The ropes have their own nature and we are the one to follow. The design kept evolving every time a knot was made. Thankfully, I made it in time to finish all three just before the coronavirus outbreak in Indonesia. It was an up and down ride because my son was sick during the beginning of project. We were also worried about the spread, but every day we just kept on knotting and doing the best we could.”

“I was never good with drawing pictures, so the finished design is mostly something I came up with on location. I change them a lot based on my instinct and situation. With macrame techniques, the ropes have their own will and character so as the artist I follow them and see what can and can not work,” Hansella recently told Colossal.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CGrEjLqDUcu/

https://www.instagram.com/p/Br1h44njRsx/

https://www.instagram.com/p/BrHNpePDPQC/

Hansella is a self-taught artist who only just learned how to weave macrame in 2017. Since then, she’s developed a unique style ranging from neutral but complex to strikingly colorful. Some of her previous pieces have included floor-to-ceiling curtains installed in commercial spaces, adorable macrame houses for kids, wall hangings with integrated plant holders, romantic wedding ceremony backdrops, and more.

Each one is impressively intricate, and it’s cool to see how working with smaller rope for these more conventionally-scaled pieces translated into working with much thicker rope for the multi-story installations. To see more, give Hansella a follow on Instagram @macrame_id.

The post Three Massive Macrame Wall Hangings Transform a Seaside Building in Bali first appeared on Dornob.

This image of the night sky is illuminated with lamps at night for a dramatic and eye-catching effect.

While this installation is only temporary, the styrene panels held in place with removable adhesive, it’s an intriguing idea for an artistic house exterior that makes us wonder why more homeowners don’t get a little more creative with their color schemes.
If you wanted to reproduce this effect permanently on your own home, you’d likely be in for a lot more work, as it would require some detailed hand painting. But that doesn’t mean your creative house paint dreams should be dashed just yet. Take these images as house paint inspiration to come up with something that’s both doable and beautiful.

“Sited specifically within the peaceful neighborhood setting of Oak Park, Kate McQuillen’s “Night House” sparks considerations of cosmic themes, dreams, and the outsized aspirations held by those who live behind ordinary suburban homes. The image pictured above is at the home of curator Claudine Ise, in Oak Park, IL. McQuillen used a type of plastic, printed with an image that the artist created from Hubble telescope photos, to cover the facade of the home. Having been trained as a printmaker, she has always been interested in printed matter and the beauty of multiples as art for the public at large. She sees posters as an accessible form of artwork that can commemorate an event or experience.”

“To support this project, McQuillen is selling a silkscreened poster, available here. These handmade silkscreens were produced by the artist. The print is made from five screens, and features a number of inks: glow-in-the-dark, silver, varnish, yellow, white and a split fountain. They are 16″ x 20″, and are printed on Neenah Eclipse Black paper. Your support will help produce this public art project!”

The post Artistic Starry Sky House Paint first appeared on Dornob.

The California lifestyle has long been viewed as something to aspire to by people in other parts of the world: clean living by the beach, heading out to surf during the day, and taking full advantage of all of the sights and sounds at night. They don’t call it California Dreamin’ for nothing, after all. The idea of living in California also tends to go hand-in-hand with the idea of living in the perfect Californian home. If you happen to have a few million dollars lying around, an amazing house that epitomizes that laid-back attitude can now be yours.

This newly-on-the-market house is being listed by Ava Domanovski and Charles Pence of Pacific Union International for the hefty price of $7.99 million — but anyone with a keen eye for design will see that this house is truly a gem. Created by technological designer and artist Mario Romano, this incredible 7,130-square-foot property spans three floors and perfectly marries architecture, art, and technology, with innovative lighting strategies being worked all throughout the physical structure. Romano, who himself is no stranger to pushing the boundaries when it comes to interior design, has really broken the mold with some of the elements in this house, not least with some amazing 3D-printed feature walls whose sinewy surfaces have been backlit to create a uniquely comforting environment.

Officially called “M.R. Walls,” these panels represent “a break-out design language and innovat[ive] manufacturing process using the latest in parametric computing and CNC machining technology.” The walls rest in the home’s entertainment center, which itself consists of two state-of-the-art rooms on the lower levels. The same walls can also be found on the exterior of the house, where they act as a decorative and energy-efficient rain screen for the facade, which also invokes some more traditional Californian vibes by working the decks of skateboards into its 11-foot-high main entrance.

The house itself benefits from six bedrooms and eight bathrooms, with common areas like living rooms and patios blurring the lines between inside and out to celebrate the glorious Californian weather. Glass is heavily present throughout to help amplify this effect, and a vast skylight illuminates the grand staircase that winds up the middle of the layout. This skylight allows natural light into the dining and kitchen areas, the latter of which boasts a central island chock-full of state-of-the-art cooking utensils and appliances.

“San Vicente” is the last in a quartet of experimental feature homes by Romano, but all of them can treated as pieces of art in their own right. They are often used as locations for video and photo shoots, so you can definitely expect to see them popping up in commercials and music videos sometime in the near future. Romano plans to focus more on his feature walls going forward, and with any luck, they’ll continue to make their mark on California’s luxurious homes for a long time to come.

The post Santa Monica Home with 3D-Printed Light Walls Goes on the Market first appeared on Dornob.

Why trek all the way to the gym (or an actual mountain range) to get in some rock climbing practice when you could have your very own climbing wall? While they’re not exactly commonplace, residential climbing walls will inspire you to get up off the couch and experience your home from a whole new perspective.

You could get creative and add a rocky surface to a long blank wall in your home, or you can keep it simple and attach a few holds to an existing surface. Just be sure to consult an engineer about structural stability beforehand, and don’t forget to clear the way for potential falls down below.

Ready for some inspiration? Here are seven houses with seriously fun climbing walls for those domestic daredevils out there.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-60255" src="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/rock-wall-.jpg" alt="A residential climbing wall inside a Melbourne apartment.
Australian architectural firm de.arch proves you can have sporty features even when you live in an average-sized apartment. Minimalist and unexpected, this one is front and center in a two-bedroom Melbourne flat, with black grips mounted to plywood.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-60247" src="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/David-Hotson-Penthouse-2.jpg" alt="A residential climbing wall inside a New York City penthouse.
Perhaps one of New York City’s coolest penthouses ever, this renovated 19th-century loft by architect David Hotson includes both a swirling tubular slide in gleaming chrome and a daring climbing surface that extends up a narrow column all the way to the ultra-high ceiling. It’s not hard to see why these climbers are using safety gear!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-60248" src="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/BE-FUN-Climbing-Wall.jpg" alt="A residential climbing wall inside the Outdoors Indoors Home.
The fittingly-named Japanese firm BE-FUN DESIGN added a climbing wall adjacent to the kitchen in the bright and cheerful “Outdoors Indoors” home in Tokyo, which features dramatic natural lighting and a ladder leading up to a hidden nook. The wood-clad void in the center of the home is designed to mimic the feeling of a cavern for a more authentic experience.

Think tiny houses are just too small to ever enjoy a feature like this? Mississippi couple Breck and Kelsey prove that small can be mighty with their Tiny Adventure Home, built by the luxury tiny house firm Tiny Heirloom. The home’s facade boasts an operable glass garage door set into a rock climbing wall made from Rockwerx modular panels, producing an almost map-like appearance.

The founders of Scenario Architecture built “The Scenario House” for themselves and their families, and not only is it gorgeous — with a sleek staircase full of slide-out storage — but it also features a small climbing wall in the kids’ bedroom, which itself leads to a “secret space” with its own firehouse pole.

Open floor plans in business/office environments date back to 1958, when an innovative German consulting firm first introduced the concept of an “office landscape,” a conglomeration of traditional workplace furniture, curved screens, and oversized potted plants meant to supplant the private office, steno pool, and switchboard configuration. Before long, office furniture manufacturers hopped on board with the panels that would eventually give rise to the often-misinformed open cubical environment.

While the cubical office space setup efficiently utilizes space, productivity and efficiency suffer when audio and visual distractions proliferate. Hoping to remedy the situation, Kirei, a foremost designer and supplier of pioneering acoustic materials, recently added a new piece to their burgeoning line of partition solutions.

Introducing the EchoScreen

Many modular panel manufacturers tout their products’ portability, but when it actually comes time to reconfigure a large workspace, the panels prove themselves bulky and difficult to arrange. By contrast, Kirei’s new EchoScreen can be mounted to most wall surfaces or suspended from any ceiling. You can install screens individually or group them together to create new arrangements and help diminish sonic and visual overstimulation for a healthier, more dynamic office environment. The EchoScreen’s “Rolling Track” hardware permits the panels to freely run on a movable ceiling track — a process that’s controlled by an accompanying set of cables and rods. EchoScreens are easily mounted to existing T-grid ceilings with T-grid clips, already making them well-suited for most conventional office environments. Furthermore, the panels can be set up in uninterrupted runs or side-by-side to wrap around or overlie each other.

Options

In addition to the more traditional designs, EchoScreen panels can be customized and printed out in any one of 20 muted and vivacious colors. Use a single one as an artistic focal point or use several to create enclosed spaces of any size. Each panel measures 94 inches tall by 46 inches wide and 12 millimeters thick, and all of them are constructed from a mixture of recycled aluminum and PET by Woven Image, the main manufacturer of all Kirei’s North American EchoPanel products.

About Kirei

“Kirei” is the Japanese character that signifies “beautiful,” though it’s also commonly associated with purity, truth, and cleanliness. The company believes their products illustrate their commitment to these qualities with respect to our ecosystem. They describe themselves as “the source for ecologically responsible, high-performance interior elements.”

Dedicated to manufacturing products that are sensibly sourced, Kirei offers tiles made from recovered coconut shells and sustainably harvested Kirei Board and Bamboo panels. Their EchoPanel acoustic material, which aided in the rescue of over 80 million plastic bottles from landfills, is completely recyclable when it loses its usefulness.

Since the company launched in 2003, architects, interior designers, and other professionals across North America have looked to Kirei for eco-friendly, original, visually intriguing, and practical design resources. Kirei’s products have been used for major projects around the world, including restaurants, offices, hotels, schools, hospitals, and government buildings.

The post Kirei’s New EchoScreen Lets Companies Get Creative with Open Floor Office Environments first appeared on Dornob.

Can the 3D-printing revolution just arrive already? We’ve heard so much about how the ability to manufacture our own objects at home is going to change what and how we buy, potentially making it possible to recycle far more plastic and create parts on-the-spot to repair broken items. Plus, 3D printing could reduce our dependency on ultra-cheap labor, eliminate the need to import many items from overseas, reduce the amount of junk we’re tossing into the trash and into the world’s oceans, and enable just about anyone to design, invent, and produce their own goods.

It’s only a matter of time before desktop 3D printers become financially accessible to a broad swath of the public. For now, they’re still pretty expensive (with a few exceptions). Still, many design studios have access to high-end 3D printers, and it’s always interesting to see what they use them for, especially when you see their products as harbingers of what could be to come. Now, a new project by design studio Box Clever is giving us what feels like a peek into the future with a modular, 3D-printed partition that can be used in a variety of ways.

“Veil” was first created as a way to address the need for partitions in the firm’s studio space. The team 3D-printed a few concepts until they settled on one that seemed just right, and then they created a prototype. The result was so successful that they eventually launched a whole new company called Matte Chrome just to manufacture and sell it. Veil is light and airy, providing just enough of a visual barrier to delineate spaces and reduce distractions while maintaining a connection to the larger area.

“Veil is a modular system designed to create a dynamic and visually appealing privacy partition for interior environments. Veil’s modular elements can be arranged to let in more or less light, varying the partition effect,” explain its designers. “Veil allows you to get inventive with the look and function of your space. Arranging its panels in different positions creates varied effects and shapes, and a lively interplay with light and shadow.”

The system can currently be seen in place at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where you can also purchase it in the gift shop. It’s also available on the Matte Chrome website for the relatively accessible price of $99 per package, which includes 15 open pieces, 10 closed pieces, and four hooks, resulting in a partition that measures about one square meter (or 39 x 39 inches). Depending on your needs, you’ll likely need multiple packages to create your own custom partition, but the system gives you lots of room for creativity in how you assemble it. The company recommends building partitions that are no more than two square meters in height for stability, but you can go as wide as you want.

If there’s one downside to the Veil modular partition system, it’s how challenging it is to assemble. Box Clever’s spec sheet for the product reads: “Installation of Veil requires a significant level of assembly experience. While our instructional video can help improve familiarity with basic build techniques, Veil recommends consultation with a designer or architect prior to installation.”

Still, photos of the Veil are proof of just how cool it looks once it’s in place. Plus, while many of us may be trying to cut down on the amount of plastic in our lives for the sake of the environment, 3D-printed objects like this could be melted back down again once they’ve reached the end of their usefulness in their current form and made into something entirely new. Now that’s inspiring.

The post Veil: This Lacy Modern Modular Partition System is 3D-Printed first appeared on Dornob.

When you’re bored indoors, at home or at work, it may be tempting to switch off and to mentally drift to a tropical island or a Utopian idyll. How much better though would it be to just gaze at your wall and to feel you are at – or even to actually see yourself in – fabulous climes? With Eazywallz wall art you can source from a comprehensive catalog of stock images, or just provide your own. Freeze frame your last trek to Nepal or picture last year’s palm-fringed beach holiday, courtesy of Eazywallz; from floor to ceiling, multicolored and actually stuck to the wall.

Once upon a time a holiday snap, courtesy of Kodak, would remind you of a great trip away. Then came the internet – now you can upload your travel pics and publish them online. But maybe you fancy a more permanent, in-your-face reminder of the time of your life? Along comes Eazywallz, to enable you to plaster (or more accurately, stick) larger than life size images to walls, doors, windows, ceilings, furniture – any surface that is clean, flat, non-porous and dry.

Made of a self adhesive, fine canvas fabric, Eazywallz wall murals come ready to hang. No extra paste or tools required – though an extra pair of hands is advisable. They don’t wrinkle, rip or tear. Take them off to re-hang or to reuse: Unlike wallpaper, there’s no mess or mixing required, the adhesive is low tack, you just peel the backing off and stick up the artwork. As often as you like, in fact.

W. C. Fields famously said, “Never work with children or animals.” We’re not all miserable curmudgeons however, and some of us may even want to present our precious children and pets writ large upon the wall for all to see, for as long as we like. Has your dog died? Not if he’s on the wall. Is your child now a moody teenager? Well yes, but once he was a cute little toddler – look he’s on the wall!

From generic cityscapes in edgy urban lofts, to a massive reproduction of your very own work of modern art, Eazywallz artworks come measured up and ready made. With a matte finish due to their fine canvas material, they have a polished appearance and they’re made to last. They can be customized with your own phrases or logos by an in-house team of graphic designers for no extra cost and they’re shipped free in the US and Canada.

If one image (however huge) is simply not enough – then why not cobble together as many as you like? From three to three hundred, provide the pictures and Eazywallz can create the grid to enable a floor to ceiling collage of all your chosen images.

From the exotic to the prosaic – if sea-lapped beaches just don’t do it for you and a white brick wall is more your thing (and your actual wall is just dull old plaster) then you can stick up a canvas Eazywallz image, and your room becomes instantly cool and on trend!

Where overlarge wall art is concerned, Eazywallz have got it covered. Just choose your image, order your artwork, then stick it on the wall. Or wherever else you feel you can best convey your required in-house ‘wow’ factor, in personal works of art.

The post Fabulous Impact Wall Art from Eazywallz Transforms Your Personal Space first appeared on Dornob.

Rooftops can be prime real estate for all sorts of purposes, yet they’re wasted in the vast majority of cases, especially in cities where space is at a premium. These surfaces have potential to be used as outdoor terraces, gardens and skylights for the interiors below, among other uses, and one amazing vertical garden project in London manages to combine all three of these.

‘Garden House’ by Hayhurst & Co maximizes the available space on a residential roof with an angular addition covered in a terraced arrangement of planters made from marine-grade stainless steel and ribbed geotextile fleece for thermal protection and drainage.

The scheme provides a pyramid-shaped surface suitable for growing hundreds of plants with low water needs, making it easy for the residents to care for them. These V-shaped trays are arranged horizontally on the 30- and 45-degree pitched roofs.

The plot has properties owned by other people on all of sides, so having large skylights on the roof helps bring daylight in while maintaining privacy. The sloping profile of the addition is designed to fit in with neighboring buildings, and the clients’ living quarters are tucked into the ground floor. This imaginative design got ‘Garden House’ a place among the 20 houses vying for this year’s RIBA House of the Year award.

More from the architects

“Garden House is a new home, studio and gallery under a ‘hanging-basket’ roof for Whitaker Malem: the artist and costume-maker duo behind works by Allen Jones, fashion designers Hussein Chalayan and Alexander McQueen and numerous film costumes including Harry Potter, Batman and Wonderwoman.”

“On the site of a single-story workshop they built in the mid 1990s, the clients wished to create a new home an studio which maximized the space and natural light available within their tight, north-facing site behind Victorian terraced housing in Hackney’s de Beauvoir Conservation area, in London’s East End.”

“Devised as three different roof pitches, the design creates a ‘form of best fit’ – a negotiation between maximizing internal accommodation and protecting adjacent residential amenity. Garden House sets a model of how to maximize residential accommodation in sensitive inner city areas whilst meeting national and local planning policies.”

“On the ground floor, a sequence of open-plan spaces form dedicated living, dining, cooking and sleeping zones. The upper floor is lined with oak panelling to provide a rich environment for the studio, which is also used as a fitting room for clients and as a gallery space for private exhibitions of the owners’ work.”

“The roof is a bespoke hanging garden formed from stepped, stainless-steel profiles planted with a habitat of over 800 sedums and heathers – a unique and biodiverse intervention that remains active and can be farmedI The result is a new prototype for inner-city, back-lot development creating dense and adaptable urban living.”

The post Amazing Vertical Garden on a Terraced Rooftop in London first appeared on Dornob.

Create your own DIY tile pattern that’s anywhere from a perfectly symmetrical geometric design to a chaotic maze of your own creation with a fun interactive product called ‘Roll.’ You might not think a simple hexagonal tile printed with a line down the center and two semi-circles on either side could be the basis for virtually limitless design variations, but the creators have switched it up in all different ways to show just how versatile it really is.

Dreamed up by design studio Dsignio for Peronda Fashion Lab, Roll can be used to create graphic designs in a range of color combinations, from muted blue and gray to a cheerful citron accented by crisp white. The possible patterns include zig-zags, organic-looking waves, lines and circles, traditional striped effects and results with a hint of the psychedelic.

Two-dimensional wallpaper can liven up a plain wall surface, but it’s still flat, and probably not very interesting in its own right (unless it changes color, lights up or features fold-out elements.) Moving beyond mere wall coverings and into something more akin to sculpture, these wooden wall panels by MOKO interior are like large-scale art pieces.

The undulating lines and tactile qualities invite you to run your hand along its surface, interacting with it rather than just observing it from a distance. Ridges and valleys within the wood catch the light in such a way that the patterns in each design change throughout the day.

The Hungarian design firm debuted 12 unique wall panels in 2014, each inspired by patterns found in nature. They’re made of sustainably-sourced oak, eastern black walnut and other hardwood veneers in finishes ranging from matte to gloss.

Referring to their designs as ‘vertical sculptures,’ Moko explains that the thin, flexible veneer is easy to mold and shape for a real-wood finish that’s not nearly as heavy or costly as solid wood. The panels can be purchased in various quantities to custom-fit virtually any wall size or shape.

The design pictured above is called Alaska. “The starting point for this panel was the northernmost part of the USA, the snowy and icy state of Alaska. The playful and thought-provoking, crater-like hollows evoke the transition from the hardness of ice to the softness of snow and finally to the shapelessness of thaw. In Alaska, the diverse weather conditions and the ample variety of landforms are matter-of-course yet distinctive at the same time – just like this unique panel in an enclosed space. “

This one is Bondi. “The inspiration for this wall covering was one of Australia’s most popular spots, the 1 km long Bondi Beach near Sydney. Looking at the massive vertical waves running parallel to each other in perfect harmony one can almost smell the salty scent of the Tasman Sea and see the colourful whirl of swimmers, surfers and sunbathers. The idyllic image of the wind and the sea working the shore together suggests a sense of freedom, and if you want to take this freedom into the interior of your choice, then Bondi is the perfect solution.”

Another cool one is the faceted Matra. “The Matra mountain range took millions of years to form as a result of several stages of volcanic activity on the territory of today’s Hungary. The design of the panels reflects the distinctive character and aura of Matra. shaped by the forces of nature, this mystical world projects mysterious power and dominance. Spaces adorned with Matra panels are multi-faceted, as is the mountain itself, showing a new face on approach from every direction. High peaks and steep slopes alternate with gentle valleys. The play of light on the mountains never gets repetitive. The view changes every minute as clouds circle the ranges, stroking the hillsides before pouncing on the slopes.”

The post Sculptural Wooden Wall Panels Are an Awesome Alternative to Wallpaper first appeared on Dornob.

The post Wooden Wall Tiles Make Stunning Personalized Wall Art first appeared on Dornob.

Every living space should be a personal work of art – an individual statement of the residents’ personal style. It’s not always easy to achieve that ideal when you’re renting and limited in the amount of painting or wall hole-creating you can do. Las Vegas-based design studio Walls of Original Design, or WOOD, has introduced sustainable wooden tiles that can instantly change the look of an entire room with little effort and no wall damage.

Each tile is made of sustainably harvested plywood with a real wood veneer. WOOD offers tiles in three shapes: hexagons, “Y” tiles, and herringbone rectangles. The hexagons are available in eight different patterns which can be rotated, combined, and arranged into instant wall art. The “Y” and herringbone tiles are perhaps a bit more limited in their possible customization, but they still make for a stunning visual display when clustered on a wall.

The tiles are surprisingly thick and sturdy, though not so heavy that they require special installation materials. They can be hung with double-sided adhesive tape or construction adhesive. For wet or humid environments like bathrooms or kitchens, the WOOD team recommends that you use construction adhesive to keep the tiles in place.

WOOD tiles aren’t meant to cover entire walls like traditional tiles; rather, they are accent pieces that let your creativity shine. The varying patterns, shapes, and colors let you customize your own personal art pieces quickly and mess-free. And when it’s time to move or redecorate, the tiles and double-sided tape can be removed with a minimal amount of drama and wall damage.
