The iSwift M is an improvement upon its creators’ earlier product, the iSwift Pi. Both are designed for digital nomads who prefer to work in less than conventional locations — like a lounge chair on the beach. The original weighs 2.5 pounds, is made of a sturdy plastic material, and can be used in a variety of positions. It was a big hit, with nearly $1 million in sales since it debuted in 2021. The designers gathered feedback and have since made some alterations to their design, resulting in the release of the iSwift M. The new version weighs just over a pound, is a mere six millimeters thick, transforms in one second, and comes in additional sizes.

While most portable laptop desks have folding legs, the iSwift has a unique origami-like shape with built-in legs shaped like triangles. It can be used flat as a pad under your computer, with both legs up as a conventional laptop desk, or turned upside-down with a single leg extended for use as a tablet stand. Magnets hidden within the material hold the legs in position as you work. With the Pi, you unfold the legs one at a time. The M makes that process even faster. The legs are connected in the center, so the whole desk pops up into place with a simple flick of your wrist.

When folded, the iSwift M laptop desk is so thin, it easily slots into your laptop bag alongside your computer. The weight and amount of space it takes up is so minimal, you might as well take it everywhere you go. The designers even go so far as to claim that you could slide it under your pillow, sleep on it, and still not notice. Despite all that, it’s able to hold over 11 pounds (5 kg), well over the weight of most people’s computer, phone, and coffee combined.

The designers explain: “Inspired by the Copenhagen trend, we’ve selected wool felt as the material. The material is also eco-friendly and non-toxic. And with unique high-temperature pressing technology, the iSwift M becomes a piece of art. iSwift M’s material, design, and structure make it a must-have for your working life. The slim profile makes it look like a second skin for your office devices.”

This portable workstation comes in three sizes: Mini (about the size of a sheet of paper), Standard (9.4 inches by 17.3 inches), and Max (9.6 inches by 21 inches). You can also choose from gray, black, bright green, and “Barbie pink” colors. Currently raising funds on Kickstarter, the campaign is offering backers early bird discounts up to 40 percent off retail prices. Grab the Mini for $35, the Standard for $69, or the Max for $79.

But the individual workstations we sit at could change, too, and that’s not necessarily such a bad thing. It’s an opportunity to ditch the one-size-fits-all approach and customize these spaces to better suit our needs. Enter “Olli” by Pair, a workspace solution that’s designed to evolve with you.

Made to be as flexible as possible, the Olli system includes modular elements like desks, chairs, meeting tables, coat racks, benches, screens, peg boards, and storage along with “Olli,” a base module with built-in outlets. All of the company’s employees had to work from home, and there was no room for anyone to experiment with staging the collection in their own spaces. To get around the problem — and show off what the collection can do — they created miniatures of every module, with each product designer building their own configurations at home. The results are pretty cute.

“Companies are still navigating what the future office will look like for them,” says Pair product designer Hillary. “The intent and reasoning for its need will definitely change. I’m confident the office will always hold a place in our future.”

“One of my favorite quotes is, ‘There is nothing wrong with change if it’s in the right direction’ and I am proud to say Olli answers to that,” says Pair product design engineer Samantha. “When we return to the workplace, it will inevitably be a different experience; with Olli’s versatility, organizations can virtually ‘future-proof’ their spaces.”

The Magic Desk was created by 37° C Smart Home designer Wu Junfeng, who readily acknowledges that his simple initial idea quickly grew into a more far-reaching design.

“Actually, my first thought was only about designing a desk whose height could be controlled by gestures,” he explains. “Then the idea evolved into a comprehensive workplace solution: how could the desk help maximize your work performance? Could it also play a role in caring for your health, to deliver messages for you actively?”

The easy-to-adjust desk moves from standing to a sitting height when you hold your hand close to its built-in sensor. Placing your hand beneath the sensor raises the platform, while hovering over the top of the sensor lowers it. Varying height options from 25 to 51 inches allow you to choose the best settings for you, placing the desk surface at the perfect height whether you’re standing or sitting. The distance to your monitor is also “monitored” for ideal ergonomic placement.

Although it’s a pretty simple design, it factors in the needs of the modern consumer like few other sit-stand models, with built-in USB ports and a wireless charging port you can use by simply setting your phone on it. Beneath the desktop, a net neatly wrangles in cords and cables to keep your space neat and hazard free.

Having the option to stand while you work is proven to improve posture and reduce lower back pain, contributing to overall better health, but the Magic Desk smart technology goes beyond this convenience with a built-in lamp that also monitors your activity. This LED desk lamp automatically turns off after you’ve been away for 10 minutes, and brightens the space up again once you return by monitoring your movement as you get closer. The lamp offers three brightness modes: Full brightness for efficient reading; screen mode, which is dimmer and reduces blue light; and focus mode, which provides bright light and automatically turns off notifications from the desktop unit to reduce distractions while you concentrate. Even better, the entire system charges on the port built into the desk and can be moved around to personalize your workspace in a way that always works best for you.

A small monitor also alerts you if you need to adjust your posture as you begin to slouch in your chair or while standing. Additionally, the system will remind you to make a change if you’ve been in the same position for too long.

Beginning as a fully funded Kickstarter campaign, the Magic Desk is now in production and can be found in the three classic colors of black, white, and walnut. It’s also available in two length sizes of 47 and 58 inches. The design was even recognized in the A’ Design Award competition with a golden award in the category of Furniture, Decorative Items, and Homeware Design.

You don’t have to trade in your existing desk for a new one to make this work. There are lots of options for products that simply add a bit of height to your work surface, so you can switch between standing and sitting with ease. We also prepared three modes to fit your own working style while sitting. 25 degrees offers natural typing with palms resting on your laptop; 45 degrees offers a write/read/flexible working setup with peripherals, and 65 degrees allows browsing on smaller devices like tablets.”

The designers note that they “didn’t trade thinness for durability. Apart from the rock-steady Z structure and tri-angle bottom support, [they] used fiber glass to ensure the toughness of panels and a maximum of 22-pound weight, the magnetic flap to reinforce the frame, and the PU material to shield all the scratches and heat while keeping everything soft and premium to touch.”

Bonus: you can also use the MOFT Z right on your lap, which is good news for all those folks out there working from home while firmly planted on the couch.

A Bronx, New York-based company called Chassie is here to fill that niche. Its new lineup of locally made desks come in a fun variety of surface designs by contemporary artists. With their simple shapes and clean lines, the desks appear pretty basic at first glance despite the decorative tops, but each one includes advanced features like invisible charging, “remarkable wood” that wipes clean after doodling with any whiteboard marker, and clear Lucite shelves that pull out whenever you need them.

The designs available from artists like Stephani Stilwell, Ivy Tai, Jordan Rosenberg, and Michael Hamlett Jr. all have something fresh and unusual to offer, so there’s plenty to choose from. Some are available in limited edition form, like the “Fleur de Subway” by Diana Regal and the “Art Deco” by famed artist Milton Glaser, the creator of “I Heart NY” and founder of New York magazine.

But if you’re artistically inclined, you should check out Chassie’s custom option, which allows you to print just about any design you can dream up onto a desk of your own. Plus, since you can scribble all over them with whiteboard markers, you can make your designs interactive, creating fun things like coloring books, mazes, and daily planners.

The company also explains that “Chassie is a revised spelling of the French word chassis, which usually means the frame or foundation of a machine. These carpenters are said to be descended from Maya, son of the “divine engineer” deity Vishwakarma. For millennia, they’ve handcrafted everything from utensils to chariots to ships, organizing into guilds where fathers passed on their techniques as master craftsmen to their children. More impressive still, every family, religion, and region has its own style.

But, as the designers note, “traditions cannot outlive time,” and there are concerns that the Sutradhar art may not survive things like mass deforestation, the increasing cost of wood, and the amount of labor required to complete each piece. The government has even suggested that the craftspeople start using plywood in place of timber.

Occupying the first floor of a retail shop in a market complex, “Timber Rhyme” invites visitors to walk through and experience the piece in full and contemplate how the artform must evolve to remain relevant and accessible in the modern world. It’s made of digitally fabricated plywood ribs that are connected in a waffle-like pattern to achieve unique curvatures.

Once assembled, they’re almost self-supporting, with black metal bars connecting them to the ceiling in some areas and transparent acrylic supports holding them aloft in others. The design is reminiscent of the “Superdesk” created for an office by Clive Wilkinson Architects, but the possibility of functional use is far less important here — almost an afterthought.

The architects explain: “Represented through the ribbon that pours itself into space, ‘variety in a unified continuum’ nourishes our concepts. The ribbon is envisioned to blur the boundaries between the static, the movable, and the art both in and on these components of the built space. [The] role of static elements like partition screens is obfuscated with that of movable furniture. Propounding as a functional art space, a series of ‘wooden ribbons’ twist and turn to form the display shelves, sitting spaces, meeting tables, and other design elements each flowing into the other. This transcends the interior into an art-landscape.”

“This amalgamation of technology for cost, time, and ease of making with an advantage of old craft is a win-win situation for all stakeholders of the project. The retail shop becomes a setting befitting for a dialogue between the carpenter, the end-user, and the retailer, [thereby] deepening social engagement. As plywood-carpentry meets its entropic spiral, ‘Timber Rhyme’ hopes to create an opportunity to re-imagine [the] craft of the traditional curves as an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the next generation of torchbearers of intricate carvings.”

Photos show the piece before it was put into use in its retail context, but it would be nice to see it in use, too. In any case, it’s a thought-provoking meditation on the resiliency of craft and tradition in a rapidly changing world.

Standing desks offer one way to tackle this problem, with designs ranging from portable desk platform add-ons to stands that hook onto the back of your chair. If chronic pain, disability, or just plain preference dampens your enthusiasm about being on your feet all day, other options include chairs that require active balancing to keep more of your muscles engaged, or even eschewing furniture altogether. But for those who like sitting down to work (or find themselves fidgeting a lot in the process), a new product presents a happy medium.

The HOVR is a leg swing that attaches to the underside of your desk, giving you an active foot rest that helps you burn significantly more calories than you would by simply sitting at an ordinary desk. While under-desk exercisers like ellipticals and step machines can require some focus to keep moving while performing your usual tasks, the HOVR is designed to encourage unconscious, non-distracting movement.

The design is pretty simple. Two non-slip foot pads sit on either end of a bar, hanging from a strap that mounts to the underside of your desk by way of six screws. Alternatively, there’s an independent stand version that’s more portable and requires no attachment points. Just put your feet on the pads and move in any way that’s comfortable. According to the desk swing’s creators, there’s really no wrong way to use it, since staying balanced on it naturally causes you to move your legs, improving your circulation and helping you stay alert during work hours. HOVR even backs up these claims with studies by the Mayo Clinic, the University of Chicago, and the University of Tokai.

HOVR’s creators say that their under-desk leg swing is the closest people can currently get to the motions of walking while sitting down, adding that it burns 17 percent more calories than sitting, gaining it NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) certification from the Mayo Clinic. If you want to track exactly how much more you’re moving than usual, you can connect the swing to an accompanying smartphone app or an optional FitBit-like wrist device.

Too much fidgeting may be frowned upon in some workplaces, but depending on how your office is set up, sliding one of these swings under your desk could help you channel that energy in a way that flies completely under the radar. In any case, it seems like using it would be a lot less distracting than moving all your stuff around to assemble a stand-up desk.

Of all the different designs that have tried to make every square inch of a small interior space count, the most effective is undoubtedly the freestanding room-within-a-room. These structures often plug several furnishings, like lofted beds, closets, drawers, shelving, desks and sometimes even bathrooms or kitchenettes, into a single existing space with minimal fuss. Rooms-within-rooms are ideal for lofts, warehouses, and can make for great dividers in studio apartments with high ceilings. Plus, they won’t require any expensive renovation should you want to remove or relocate them to change up your space’s layout.

Some structures, like MIT’s City Home, expand and transform to increase the size of the rooms its tenants want accessible at any given time. Others create entirely enclosed private spaces within a larger room, such as Dan Hisel’s Z Box. A few modular rooms are even designed to be portable and roll around on casters for easy repositioning. In a new design by the architects at CHA:COL, a Los Angeles apartment’s central feature acts as a creative hub.

The loft, named “Writer’s Block” by the architects, is inhabited by a New York Times best-selling author and a game designer who needed a small urban getaway to recover from long book tours and business trips. The  unit is now equipped with fully-functional living and office spaces but began as a beautiful blank slate of brick walls, wooden ceilings, and angular support beams. The interior’s initial simplicity inspired the architects to incorporate a geometric motif into their design. CHA:COL explains, “Taking cues from their writing, gaming and fantasy environment background, we drew inspiration from the Escher-like geometries of the game Monument Valley. The game is unique in its ability to transform two-dimensional lines and shapes into a three-dimensional environment that a player inhabits.”

“Similar to the way [characters in the game] move through tilted planes and angular walls, we envisioned the clients moving through a central creative area (the angular 3D entertainment area on one side and the silent writers desk on the other side) into the lounge (the inlaid carpet bands emerge out of the custom millwork piece and climb up the walls in a bold graphic mural).”

By attempting to marry the graphic and the spatial, CHA:COL eventually came up with the “Writer’s Block,” which acts as a creative workhorse for writers and game designers alike. Each person now gets a workspace that meets their individual needs and a sense of privacy without having to isolate themselves from the rest of the loft. The modular all in one prefab loft volumes in “Writer’s Block” offer a clever manifestation of a shared creative space in which concentration, inspiration, and interaction are all of the utmost importance. Imagine how different the loft would look and feel if the designers had instead chosen to separate the couple by creating two small, walled-off office areas.

“It was heartening to hear from the clients post-occupancy, that they love using the space extensively for their sketching, writing and musical work, and hang out there to collaborate often between tours and travels,” the architects happily report.

According to Ruan Hao, regarding CATable 1.0: “It is a table for us and a paradise for cats.”

This cat furniture is seemingly a bit wonky, a bit wobbly, but its crazy zig-zag legs are actually finely balanced, all in the name of style and cat appeal.

All work-at-home cat owners know it can be hard (and just a bit sad) to reluctantly (and repeatedly) relinquish your cat from your lap and settle down to work. CATable 1.0 gives your cat a little fun time while you work, but you still both get to keep each other company.
