If you loved the sets from movies like Moonrise Kingdom, The French Dispatch, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Grand Budapest Hotel, you’re probably a fan of Wes Anderson, even if you didn’t know it! The Texas-born filmmaker has won multiple Golden Globes and Academy Awards for his unique directorial style and kitsch-laden work over the last three decades.

Anderson’s style – punctuated by perfectly symmetrical framing and over-the-top pastel palettes – has become so iconic these days that the folks over at home care platform Angi (formerly Angie’s List) recently wondered what the director’s work might look like on the small screen. They took up the challenge by enlisting interior designer Lau Wlasenkov to give the sets of several beloved TV shows the full Anderson treatment. Don’t forget to look for Easter eggs from each series as you peruse these fun, light-hearted re-imaginings:

Friends

While Monica Geller’s iconic living room from the hit 1990s sitcom was already slathered in pastel purple, Angi switched it up to Anderson’s more signature red and pink palette. They also decluttered the space and added a retro wood-encased TV console. By setting the furniture at right angles, they produced more symmetry, a move echoed by the giant swaths of fabric balanced on either side of the main window. Phoebe Buffay’s legendary guitar also gets a place of honor in this Wes-ified room.

Russian Doll

This critically acclaimed Netflix series features a main character (Nadia) who finds herself in trapped in time, continually “waking up” in her bathroom at the exact same moment after every loop. In the show, Nadia’s bathroom is dark with black tiles, brass accents, and minimal lighting. The Angi designers gave it a Wes Anderson makeover by lightening the mood considerably. Geometric blue tiles in contrasting patterns create a type of symmetry above and below the vanity, as do stacks of steamer trunks placed strategically on either side. Warm-colored wood breaks up the busy-ness of the colors and designs. Savvy fans can also spot Nadia’s cigarette pack left casually in one corner.

Bridgerton

While this Netflix show about 19th-century love and gossip in British high society has already spawned an entire “Regencycore” aesthetic on social media, main character Daphne’s bedroom really goes next level with some Wes Anderson tweaks. Wlasenkov recovered the walls in bright red zebra-pattern wallpaper and outfitted both the foot bench and headboard in the same lush velvet fabric for symmetry. A playful, modern table lamp on one side of the bed balances out Daphne’s fluffy fan on the other.

Mad Men

This Emmy and Golden Globe-winning period drama set in the 1960s was credited for sparking a renewed love affair with the fashion of the era when it first came out in the mid-2000s. To make main character Don Draper’s kitchen more Wes Anderson-like, Angi erased the soulless oak-and-plaid decor and added bright yellow striped wallpaper, a happy floral curtain, and gleaming white cupboards. Draper’s hat also sits much nicer on the new dark butcher block counters.

Angi and Wlasenkov also worked together to create Wes Anderson versions of the Succession and Sex Education sets, both of which can be viewed in all their kitschy glory on Angi’s official site.

If this collection of TV set makeovers has you craving Anderson’s signature style in your own home, there are a few key things to keep in mind to recreate his signature look. Start with an element of symmetry, but keep it whimsical. Use a bold palette of three to five colors, playing around with saturated hues that make a statement while still complimenting each other. Add texture to your walls by adding paneling, even if its just on the lower half, and fill it in with intriguing colors. Create a carefully curated collection of beloved belongings you can artfully display around the room. With a little effort, you’ll feel like you’re on the set of one of your favorite Wes Anderson movies every day.

The post Iconic TV Sets Get Reimagined in Wes Anderson’s Signature Style first appeared on Dornob.

When Italian burger chain Bun turned the design of their newest restaurant over to the Spanish creative team Masquespacio, they got their very own “golden arches” in the form of floor-to-ceiling blocks of pastel hues.

Located on the Via Dell’Orso in Milan, the plain white exterior belies the vibrantly painted scene inside. Sticking with the chain’s pool-changing-room aesthetic, the design company’s co-founders Christophe Penasse and Ana Hernández contained the subway-style tiles to small segments of the walls, filling in the remainder of the roughly 1500 square feet with chunks of daffodil yellow, mossy green, ballet pink, and luxuriant lavender.

Although the colors aren’t as bold as the studio’s norm, the firm explains that “this time …the palette is a bit less splashy, to give it a more mature look and adapt it to the historic (Brera) neighborhood where the new Bun is located.”

The architectural details begin with decorative arches that frame each dining booth, creating cozy eating compartments with seatbacks made of upholstered circles, and wooden tables trimmed in gold.

“Goldish touches are one of the elements that make it more sophisticated,” said co-founder and marketing director Christophe Penasse. “We used dry plants for this space to add this more mature touch.”

Terrazzo tiles shift in color across the floor, following the flow of the rooms, while playful portholes in the booths echo the globe lighting throughout the diner.

This is the second Bun burger location that Masquespacio has tricked out for the company. The artists created a swimming pool-esque feel for the first (Located on Milan’s Viale Bligny) through a mix of olive and lilac tiles.

Masquespacio’s designers took the pool room idea one step further with this build though, creating an entire eating space encased in iridescent mirroring on the ceiling and top half of the walls, and gray subway tiles below. A pool ladder mounted on the wall completes the impression. “The outcome became a place to discover where a mirrored effect recreates the feeling of being surrounded by waves of water,” their website says.

Penasse adds that “while you can find an evolution of the swimming pool concept we used previously… here has a completely new approach for which we try to recreate the waves and blurry effect of being under the water.”

The restaurant’s serving bay is delineated from the rest of the restaurant by its green walls, counters, and floor. Mirrored tiles cover the ceiling here too, casting green above patrons as they choose their smashed-style burger of choice.

The collaboration between Bun burgers and the Valencia-based designers has been so successful that they’ve already announced plans for a third partnering for a branch in Turin.

Masquespacio (Spanish for “More Than Space”) was founded by Hernández and Penasse over a decade ago and has since won numerous design awards for projects in locations around the world. Most recently, the company was named “Young Talent of The Year” in 2020 by Elle Decoration International Magazine and awarded “Interior Designers of The Year” in 2019 by the Spanish edition of The New York Times’ T Magazine. Their continued mission is to “draw a smile on your face and make you feel excited every time we present a new creation.”

The post Bun: Italian Burger Joint Serves Up Stunning Pastel Interiors first appeared on Dornob.

Summer is in full swing, which means there are new looks for your entire wardrobe, including your nail style. Here are some of this year’s coolest trends to help you celebrate exotic vacations, backyard barbecues, swim parties, and baseball games again.

Smoky Swirls

Wisps of swirling smoke snaking across nude nails like these from Instagram’s @imarninails are having a moment right now. Best of all, the swirls can be any color, creating gorgeous abstract art.

Pastel Tips and Cuticles

Pastel colors are trending hardcore. People can’t get enough of those baby blues and yellows, sage greens and light lavenders. One way to enjoy the pastel palette in a fresh way is to paint just the cuticles and tips like in this photo from @moshbeautystudio on Instagram.

Velvet Nails

Nails that look like they have the texture of shimmering velvet fabric took over the 2020 holiday nail scene, and they’re still going strong. This incredible technique is all about choosing the right products. Getting the perfect velvet nails requires gels with fine metallic particles and chromo powders to blend into the perfect consistency.

Texture

Instead of just making your nails look like they have texture, give them the real thing. This orange and green set by @nailsbybleona on Instagram offer a prefect, vibrant mix of slick and ridged textures.

Abstract Geometry

All things 90s are back in (i.e. scrunchies and the proliferation of Friends merchandise). Instagram’s @charlotteemilybeauty posted these geometrically painted nails that are also on trend with that pastel scheme.

Playful Art

After a year of isolation and pandemic, 2021 is the time to have some fun, let loose, and let your nails show your sense of humor. Each nail in this set posted by @top_nails_bar on Instagram is completely unique, featuring bright colors and eye-catching designs and patterns.

Checkerboard

Perhaps thanks to the 90s comeback, checkerboard prints are very “in” right now. This cool set from @primpedandpolished on Instagram adds a twist by turning the pattern on its side for the pinky nails. You can also tone down the busy-ness of the checkerboard craze by painting just one or two nails in the classic squares while giving the rest a solid color treatment.

Cow Print

Nails decked out in cow print from are popping up all over the internet. This set by @madelineelizabethx on Instagram is flashy but classy in its pink, black, and white hues.

Turquoise

Taking inspiration from timeless turquoise jewelry, these nails posted by @chisatochee on Instagram almost look like the real thing. To avoid overkill, the two first nails are perfectly balanced by the last two, which are painted in creamy orange and lined with gold.

Fading Foil French

Putting a spin on the classic foil French manicure, this set by @nailstampingqueenuk on Instagram features a pretty pink base with organically lined gold foil tips. You could even riff on this theme by using a foil in an on-trend color like emerald green or rust.

Vertical Stripes

Up and down lines are a smart choice in 2021, and these nails posted by @xjuliatalisman on Instagram are so flawless with their summer rainbow of stripes. To glam up this look, you could add in some metallic lines and daring colors for extra weekend flair.

This summer’s nail trends represent a desire for freedom of expression after a year of lockdown. Above all else, colorful, playful, and bold are the nail trends to follow in 2021.

The post 2021’s Hottest Summer Trend?

The best salons offer a lot more than just straightforward beauty services. They’re also destinations in their own right, providing immersive experiences that make their clients want to return again and again. Interior design that really nails a salon’s branding is a big part of making that happen, pairing the services received with unforgettable visuals that will forever be associated with that particular business. In Stockholm, Sweden, ASKA Architects did just that for the headquarters of Maria Nila Salon.

Located within a historic four-story building in the center of the city, the new Maria Nila Salon is a vision in soft pastels, evoking the relaxing sensual pleasures of high-end salon services with fluid organic shapes. Giant MDF and plexiglass cut-outs in dripping shapes call to mind endlessly flowing hair products and introduce a youthful, playful, and creative feeling. The whole salon is awash in dreamy shades of lavender, mint, turquoise, pink, and peach.

ASKA wanted to give the building itself a voice in the design, as well. They chose colors and design elements that would complement original features like floors made of checkered marble and wood laid in a herringbone pattern. At the entrance, the purple plexiglass installation hanging from the ceiling frames the antique wooden door for a contrast of old and new.

The salon is designed to show off the company’s products while doubling as office space. Softly undulating product shelves are spread throughout each room, their shapes taking inspiration from natural elements like water, trees, caves, and coral reefs in a nod to Maria Nila’s nature-centric approach.

“The concept of the House of Maria Nila is to always be inviting, have an air of friendliness, and encourage a modern way of expressing beauty,” states Maria Nila. “While the townhouse Maria Nila now calls home is located in Lärkstaden, an area fully built on the design that dominated Swedish architecture in the early days of the 20th century, it’s clear that the inside speaks young-at-heart and playful.”

“With a wish to not compromise with the old soul of the house, Maria Nila asked the new and upcoming architecture firm ASKA to take on the mission to create an interior that would mirror the values of the brand: friendly, curious, and honest. A task that fitted well with the philosophy of the trio. ASKA’s belief is that styles, design expressions, and epochs will pass with time. But the essential architectural qualities, the residuals – aska in Swedish, will always remain. With the use of pastel colors, round shapes, and soft materials, ASKA has mixed the old soul of the building with the young spirit and energy of Maria Nila.”

ASKA visited the space often throughout the renovation to fine-tune certain elements as necessary, like adding their own custom acoustic panels when a particular room was found to be too noisy. They designed and crafted much of the furniture seen throughout the salon and brought in objects made by hip young creators like furniture designer Gustaf Westman and LED artists Josefin Eklund and My Zachrisson.

The post Undulating Pastel Office Space Captures the Spirit of Hair Care Brand Maria Nila first appeared on Dornob.

Disused industrial areas take up valuable real estate in cities all over the world, but transforming them for a different purpose can be tricky. Many are Superfund sites, or otherwise require environmental remediation before they’re safe to use. As populations continue to grow, reintegrating these places into the urban fabric can be essential, and when it’s done well, the results are incredibly rewarding. That’s especially true when the new projects retain the industrial essence of the setting, pulling in threads of their particular history and culture.

Moscow’s Khodynka Field has a long and storied history that began in the 14th century as a battlefield and host of state occasions. It’s best known as the site of the first Russian-powered flight in 1910, and a regular airfield in use through the late 1980s. Its most recent redevelopment includes the Russian National Air & Space Museum, as well as many new commercial and residential buildings. Tucked among them is Café Polet, a new restaurant designed to pay tribute to the site’s aviation history.

Set within the old Frunze Central Aerodrome, which closed in 2003, Café Polet shows off its history in references both subtle and direct almost everywhere you look. New York-based studio Asthetique has created stunning retro-futuristic interiors full of aeronautical nods with distinctive Soviet flair. There’s something dramatic to see at every turn, from bubble-shaped porthole windows at the entrance to blocky winged statues reminiscent of USSR monuments and early sci-fi films clinging to the columns all throughout.

“The idea was to take aeronautics beyond the machine level, to show humans taking flight,” says Asthetique founder and creative director Julien Albertini in Interior Design magazine. Similarly, the entry’s striped concrete floor is modeled on the markings of airport runways, “taking the idea of a landing strip, but then modernizing it.”

Against the textural concrete walls leans a jagged mountainous landscape of black birch wood paneling punctuated by shiny chrome doors, recalling the Russian Constructivism artistic and architectural philosophy of the early 20th century. Lighting hangs from flying saucer-like copper discs, some set at jaunty angles.

Within the second dining room, a bas-relief panel of plaster-coated plywood creates a striking sculptural effect on the wall. Monochromatic murals depict space travel imagery like astronauts lounging on the moon. Of all the stylistic choices, the most literal stands out as the most fun: tiny back-lit stainless steel airplane silhouettes dotting various surfaces.

Softer elements come into play, too, balancing all of the brutish materials and geometries. Metal screens covered in trailing green ivy separate the dining spaces. The chairs and banquettes are upholstered in soft velvet in shades of gray, beige, and blush. The designers consciously chose pastels to complement the otherwise neutral color scheme, infusing the restaurant with a sense of calm.

Cafe Polet is located at #2 Khodinskiy Blvd, offering a menu of European and Georgian dishes crafted by chef Aleksandr Airapetyan, with recent standouts including a salad of grilled squid, smoked baby potatoes, and truffle mayonnaise.

The post Moscow’s Café Polet Celebrates the Retro-Fabulous Look of Soviet Aviation first appeared on Dornob.

Swoon is in the business of disrupting the norm. The UK-based furniture store set out to produce beautiful, modern, high-quality designs at affordable prices, and their experimental approach to the market paid off. Now a leading online retailer for trendy furniture, Swoon is constantly offering fresh products, including an imaginative new line of kids furniture.

The nine-piece “Little Creatives” collection is designed to promote creativity in a child’s home environment, incorporating sweet pastels and prints in a line that stays true to the brand’s overall aesthetic. You won’t find any plastic chairs, primary colors, or clunky silhouettes here — it’s all just as sleek and elegant as the rest of the Swoon offerings.

Produced in collaboration with Studio Tilt, “Little Creatives” includes the Hunter Craft Trolley, Emmeline Chair, Freddie Desk, Harri Toy Box, Fynne Drawing Tray Table, Ailya Coat Rack, and more, with four of the pieces named after the kids who inspired the ideas. They’re all fun and creative, and unlike most kids furniture, they fit right in with modern interior decor.

“It has been a really fun collaborative process, bringing these ideas and designs to life with the help of the children,” says Sam Baldry, Swoon’s Head of Design. “We believe that the importance of creativity will only grow, so it is essential to nature creative thinking at a young age. We hope these pieces will encourage parents and children to do just that at home.”

“The idea to curate and co-design with children was to focus on the theme of creativity, to both excite and include children but also to engage in the debate about creativity in the education of young people,” says Oliver Marlow, co-founder of Studio Tilt. “We wanted the ideas and experiences of the young people to come alive in the products they created, and to excite and delight other children, too, as part of the range.”

“It’s the first of its kind in children’s furniture, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it. The quality of the pieces is testament to the insight and creativity of children.”

Pieces in the Little Creatives collection range from £49 to £249, and will be available on Swoon’s website from September 16th on.

Swoon began when Debbie Williamson found herself wishing all the high-end furniture she lusted over wasn’t so expensive — and that it was easier to order on the internet. She quickly realized the furniture market was open for a lot of reinvention, starting a company that provided great value, free delivery, and free returns.

Swoon’s business model deviates from the traditional furniture industry in other ways, too. Instead of releasing new collections twice a year, the brand has a design cycle every month so they can refresh their selections almost constantly. They use an experimental testing model, too, producing small batches to see what’s popular and then scaling up production on the most successful items.

Five new products debut on the Swoon website each and every day, and they often go fast, so if you see something you like, better snag it while it’s hot!

The post Swoon Launches First-Ever Line of Kids Furniture first appeared on Dornob.

For months now, Taylor Swift has teased a brand new aesthetic on Instagram, leaving fans wondering whether the star was focusing her attention on a possible upcoming fashion line instead of an album. As it turns out, we’re getting both.

Swift’s collaboration with British fashion designer Stella McCartney was initially announced in June, and the first images from the collection have finally been unveiled. And of course, everyone’s buzzing about her new release, “Lover,” which debuted at number one on the Billboard charts.

The entire Stella x Taylor Swift collection went on sale for just two days from August 23rd to 25th at “The Lover Experience,” a pop-up store in New York City.

“It’s been SO much fun to work/dream up cute stuff with my friend @stellamccartney to create a line inspired by my new album Lover,” Swift wrote on Instagram. “Can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on and tell you more about the pop-up shop at the YouTube Live event this Thursday at 4p ET!”

The collection includes ready-to-wear garments and accessories that fit in with the dreamy, pastel-washed look Swift has been sporting lately, including some soft tie-dye, airbrushed effects, and lyrics from “Lover” in handwritten script. As a whole, the look is evocative of sunny summer vacations.

The singer says she got the idea for the partnership after meeting McCartney at one of her concerts in London.

“When I started spending more time in London, Stella and I would go on walks, have cocktails, and talk about life. So when it came time to write this album, I name checked her in one of my songs, and when I played her the album, I said ‘Should we do something?’”

For her part, McCartney says she was flattered.

“I couldn’t believe that my name is in a Taylor Swift song (what?!?), and after Taylor played me the entire album it gave me such incredible inspiration for the collaboration and it really revolved around the music. When Taylor asked me, or even thought to come and do this with me, what I love is how we really complement each other in what we generate creatively together.”

In a press release, McCartney added that the line is also inspired by “vintage graffiti, band tees, nostalgic memorabilia, and Taylor’s lyrics, with some pieces also featuring Taylor’s cat Benjamin Button as a personal touch.”

The entire range is made of vegan, eco-friendly materials using environmentally friendly manufacturing processes, in keeping with the standards of sustainability McCartney holds up for everything she produces.

Fans should expect pricing to fall more in line with that of Stella McCartney’s high-end offerings than Swift’s general merchandise. A bomber jacket from the collection retails at $1,995, while a bag costs $795.

If you missed out on the New York City pop-up and you’re wondering how to get your hands on this merchandise, you might have to wait a little longer. While a couple items are available for pre-order on Stella McCartney’s website, there’s no news just yet on when the rest will drop, or whether or not they’ll be available online.

There’s a sense of childlike wonder woven throughout this new set of candy-colored interiors by designer Patricia Bustos — one that invites you to reach up and touch glass orbs as if you could pop them like bubbles and sink down into satisfyingly squishy pink furnishings. Created for Casa Décor, Madrid’s annual design event now in its 54th year, Wonder Galaxy lives up to its name as it effortlessly demonstrates emerging interior design trends to assembled professionals.

Set inside a 1930s mansion in the neighborhood of Salamanca, Bustos’ installation is imagined as a retro-futuristic dressing room for a super heroine, illustrated here in a lightning bolt-shaped portrait of model Ronja Okane by Mexican illustrator Paul Fuentes. This rather David Bowie-esque element sets the mood for the entire space, which expertly blends a number of different design trends into a cohesive whole.

Iridescent colors, feminine shapes, a sense of surrealism, a little bit of Memphis-style patterning, and the look of a 1960s movie about the future come together for a result that brings minimalism into a new visual era — one that’s perhaps a little less boring and monochromatic. After all, aren’t we a little tired of seeing almost entirely featureless white spaces elevated as the pinnacle of avant-garde interior design? Wonder Galaxy reminds us of the visual elements that made us wide-eyed and awe-inspired as kids.

Bustos, who has a background in painting and fashion as well as furniture and interior design, is renowned for her ability to bring fun and irreverence into high-end spaces. The bubblegum couches featured here are a particularly evocative choice, as are the oversized “bubbles” in the bathtub, which mimic the shape of the lamps overhead.

Even as it draws from trends of the past, the installation feels fresh and exciting. Noting that adults tend to write off fantastical things as immature, Bustos visualizes a “childhood futuristic revival” where we can stop being so serious and let our imaginations take over.

She adds: “Wonder Galaxy is a journey into the future that explores the relationship between the future and the fantasy or dream world that makes us become children again…we think that a future injected with color and with a certain surrealist air can help us recover that creative energy of childhood. We started with the pink, that color that means so much to [me] and that has a magic that turns everything serious into playful, that modernizes the most classic piece or refreshes the most sober and boring atmosphere.”

“Wonder Galaxy is a risky and colorful dressing, a three-dimensional reality that reminds us of an Austin Powers movie but in which we are the protagonists. The game of arcs and asymmetric volumes gives us a feeling of infinite depth, expanding the space resulting in a perfect balance. The gradients of colors suggest a host of parallel and utopian realities in which we could live if we wanted. Put to dream…the best thing is to do without limits. Fantasy colors and soap bubbles are mixed with unusual materials such as the iridescent or the fabric of the ceiling to generate an atmosphere that transports us to another galaxy and helps us to visualize new horizons where to dream and be ourselves.”

What would cities look like if we were to radically redefine the urban living experience by centering it around small interactive communities? The Global Village by MINI LIVING takes an experimental approach to answering that question with five compact, portable dwellings custom-designed for five different cities. The latest iteration is currently on display on the rooftop of ROW DTLA as part of the 2018 LA Design Festival, demonstrating MINI’s vision for improving the quality of urban life while adhering to the brand’s “creative use of space” credo.

Well aware of the fact that globalization and the internet are leading to a homogenization of architectural styles around the world, MINI LIVING commissioned local architects in each of its chosen cities — L.A., London, Beijing, Tokyo, and New York — to infuse each dwelling with the spirit of its locale. The firm Freeland Buck took on this challenge in Los Angeles, producing a dynamic pastel “urban cabin” that captures the city’s sunny, modern sensibilities with a graphic facade and a transforming interior that belies its mere 161-square-foot size.

Compact, attractive, and highly adaptable, this cabin can be placed just about anywhere, opening up to its surroundings by day and closing off for privacy and introversion by night. MINI LIVING’s designers use timber as a core material in every one of their cabins, while the local architects source secondary materials from their respective areas to firmly root each structure in the traditions of its setting. The cabins can comfortably accommodate two people, with transforming elements inside folding, sliding, shifting, and rotating to reveal new functions.

The Los Angeles Urban Cabin consists of two cubic volumes on either side with a third cube offset within the central void, shaking up the interior layout just enough to make it seem much larger than it really is. The translucent facade allows daylight to filter inside, supporting a hanging garden of trailing ivy that’s suspended from the ceiling. A ladder outside leads to a rooftop terrace with another small garden of its own.

“What we set our thematic focus on with this specific one is the fact that people in LA live a life that is very much connected to nature,” says MINI LIVING designer Corinna Natter. “However, usually they have to leave the city to experience it. We wanted to give them the opportunity to do that within the city — right in the heart of downtown.”

“LA is characterized by remarkable architectural variation sprawling between mountains and the ocean,” says architect Brennan Buck. “This diversity enables both the city and nature to be used as archetypal settings, not only for the film industry, but for everyone. We considered how the cabin would be captured and experienced, and utilized surfaces that vary between graphic alignment and kaleidoscopic effects as one moves around and through them.”

MINI LIVING’s first fully operable co-living hub will open in April 2019 in Shanghai, officially taking its global village concept to the next level. Though the five temporary cabins and this new hub may be located many thousands of miles away from each other, together they form a united village. The other four 2017 cabins can be viewed on the MINI LIVING website.

The post Designed for LA, the Pastel MINI LIVING Cabin Hopes to Transform the Urban Experience first appeared on Dornob.

Not every film director has a visual style and “vibe” so distinctive that their work instantly springs to mind at the sight of certain buildings, interiors, and objects. But thanks to his quirky, charming, slightly outside-of-time aesthetic, Wes Anderson has joined the likes of Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock in that hallowed realm. Just as you might say a striking retro-futuristic home looks “Hitchcockian” or frequently find yourself comparing ultramodern interiors to the ones in 2001: A Space Odyssey, there’s a particular sort of pristine vintage look comprised of perfectly complementary pastel colors and ever-so-slightly flawed symmetry that conjures Anderson’s name in our minds.

Clearly, Anderson’s oeuvre has made an impression on us, because not only are we spotting “accidental Wes Anderson movie backdrops” everywhere (as catalogued on Reddit), but some people are even starting to create Wes Anderson-themed establishments. “The Budapest Café” by Melbourne-based architecture firm Biasol is a new eatery in Chengdu, China with a design that “draws on Anderson’s meticulous, memorable, and magical worlds to create an inviting destination with whimsical character and international appeal.”

That description certainly seems to nail the appeal of Anderson’s vision. Named after the director’s 2014 film The Grand Budapest Hotel, which featured lots of pastel pinks offset by minty whites, the café takes Anderson’s flair for painstakingly curated nostalgia and gives it a good polishing, contrasting it with a few more modern elements. True to form, the establishment also boasts lots of arched doorways, gleaming 1960s-era details, and hints of a past that wasn’t ever quite real. You can easily imagine Tilda Swinton or Bill Murray breezing in at any moment.

The designers see the café as a sort of stage upon which patrons can play out their own stories, with multiple layers inviting them to explore every inch of the space. They began by studying Anderson’s films and the way he used specific color palettes and camera angles to frame his stories and characters.

“Our modern, minimalist, and refreshing interpretation is defined by design, materiality, and brand. The building façade projects a sense of grandeur, with an arch framing the entrance and welcoming patrons to The Budapest Café.”

“The Budapest Café is designed to feel feminine, light, and fun, despite its loftiness and exposed structure. A pink ball pool, neon signage, and original Eero Aarnio Bubble chair inspire playfulness, and the bathrooms surprise with speckled pink terrazzo to complement and contrast with the nostalgic-green hues of the café. The contrasting hard and soft colors and design details reflect the personalities of Anderson’s characters in The Grand Budapest Hotel, enhanced by branding integrated into the café through signage, menus, and printed collateral.”

In Milan, you can actually visit a café designed by Wes Anderson himself. Bar Luce is the main dining space inside Fondazione Prada, the iconic fashion brand’s new arts center, which occupies a former distillery. Anderson referenced Milanese cafés and landmarks from the 1950s and 1960s to create an appropriately nostalgic and location-specific aesthetic. But if his own café seems even less Wes Anderson than Biasol’s, that’s only because he wanted to make sure it was usable in real life.

“While I do think it would make a pretty good movie set, I think it would be an even better place to write a movie,” he says of Bar Luce. “I tried to make it a bar I would want to spend my own non-fictional afternoons in.”

The post The Budapest Café: A Wes Anderson-Themed Eatery in Chengdu, China first appeared on Dornob.

Black, white, green and fading all over, these create a wonderful 3D illusion on the wall – chipped paint flaking from rustic wooden boards from outside some faded home. The vintage effect captures the aesthetic of aged wood from old house brand-new roles of wallpaper.

In green, white or black-and-white, three basic patterns offer a range of possibilities. Deployed in horizontal or vertical strips on select interior surfaces, these work as full-wall coverings or can accent areas of interest in particular rooms and hallway spaces as the photos show.

For some people, the fact that these are in some way ‘fake’ makes them a bit less magical … but again, look to the images: in the right context they could look truly beautiful as long as you are not too disturbed by their kitsch potential.

The post Old Pattern, New Paper: Vintage Scrap-Wood Wallpapers first appeared on Dornob.
