Anyone curious about car sharing company Lynk & Co can now walk into a boldly designed space in Milan, check out the Lynk & Co 01 vehicle, and maybe even visit a fortune teller. The company opened its latest club on Milan’s Corso Venezia 6 in November, welcoming brand enthusiasts, car lovers, sustainability trendsetters, and anyone else interested in discussing creative new ideas. The experience is a far cry from a visit to your local car dealership, and that’s exactly how Lynk & Co wants it.

Set within the city’s High Fashion District, the industrial club has plenty of interesting things to look at, not the least of which is the 01, a compact crossover plug-in hybrid featuring a 177-horsepower, 1.5-liter gas engine and an 80-horsepower electric motor. Though it’s available for purchase, the main appeal of the 01 is Lynk & Co’s monthly subscription service, which grants you use of the vehicle whenever you need it without worrying about things like insurance and maintenance. The car can also be borrowed for shorter periods. It’s designed to appeal to a broad range of tastes, and it offers all the functionality most people need in an urban vehicle.

A partnership between Chinese company Geely and the Swedish Volvo, Lynk & Co knew that people curious about renting or borrowing the 01 vehicle would want a chance to see it in person, but they didn’t want it to feel like visiting your neighborhood Toyota dealer. They decided to bring the car to the people who will use it most — those located in large cities — instead of opening a larger public facility in a more suburban location.

Designed in collaboration with Gothenburg-based studio New Order Arkitektur, the company’s Milan location is the tenth such club to open in the past few years. The interiors repeat some motifs like a cocktail bar and a signature mustard yellow sofa, but it also boasts elements that are distinctly Milanese. A neon “whirlpool light” wraps around a column in the center of the mostly concrete space, which is also outfitted with stylish furniture, a curving lamppost sculpture by local brand Seletti, and the Lynk & Co 01 set under a skylight.

The Tarot Room offers guests a chance to look into the future, and the Candy Shop Toilet encloses sweets within glass tubes, with everything else in the restroom painted a lurid pink. The company’s commitment to sustainability is also on display in the form of recycled materials and objects for sale that hew to the same vision (like Triwa watches with recycled plastic straps). A wood-clad meeting room is lined with reproductions of famous Milanese art. Runways also weave through the space, paying homage to Milan’s reputation as a center of the fashion world.

Previously, Lynk & Co opened a second club in Barcelona designed by Masquespacio. That space was designed to evoke “a world of utopias,” drawing in curious passersby on the well-trafficked Paseo de Grácia with big, colorful sculptural elements visible through the front windows. Other clubs are located in Gothenburg, Antwerp, Rome, Berlin, and Amsterdam, with a new location coming soon in Dusseldorf. Lynk & Co seems to be focused on Europe for now, but CEO Alain Visser has said the company sees market opportunities in U.S. states like New York and California.

“Being present in Milan means not only being part of a beautiful city that renews itself on a daily basis, but it also means entering a fabric where the community that lives there pulsates with ideas: with our club and the events we will organize here,” says Visser. “We want to give space to all those people who want to change their concept of mobility and lifestyle. It’s important to have fun while driving towards a more sustainable future.”

The post Lynk & Co’s Milan Club is a Sustainable Hub for Creative Car Lovers first appeared on Dornob.

The post Lamborghini Hits the Hybrid Car Market with Innovative Supercar Sián first appeared on Dornob.

Lamborghini is an iconic brand that represents the height of German and Italian engineering, innovation, and design. Green technology, though, probably doesn’t come to mind when picturing the sporty rides made by this company. The new Lamborghini Sián hybrid, complete with a $2 million price tag, wants to change that.

In the search for new ways to power cars with less reliance on fossil fuels, car manufacturers are investing in their R&D departments to generate new battery and engine designs. With the Sián, Lamborghini is trying out a variation on the bulkier, slower charging lithium ion batteries that currently dominate the market.

The solution with which they’re experimenting is supercapacitors. With a name like that, it’s a natural choice for supercars. One advantage of supercapacitors is that they weigh about one-third as much as a traditional battery. That’s a win off the starting line when calculating weight distribution. Located behind the seats at the front of the Sián’s engine, the supercapacitor is accessible without being noticeable.

The second, and critical, feature of supercapacitors is the way they transfer power. In contrast to batteries that charge very slowly and then hold it steadily, capacitors fill with power fast and release it quickly. The capacitor mechanism is completely different from a traditional battery. Think of it as two metal plates with energy in between them. The magnetic energy repels the plates, keeping them separate. Drawing on the basic design of a normal capacitor, supercapacitors offer plates that can absorb more energy, allowing for efficient energy storage. The space between the plates is also more efficient—you might say “super” efficient.

Weight and power are both great reasons for the Sián to use the supercapacitor technology, but we are talking about a hybrid here, so the discussion has to include sustainability. Unlike other car batteries, supercapacitors don’t contain harmful chemicals or toxic metals that are difficult to dispose of. Plus, in contrast to batteries that degrade over time, supercapacitors can be charged and discharged almost infinitely. That means basically no battery waste, a potentially major environmental benefit.

Of course, Lamborghini isn’t looking to directly compete with commercial electric or hybrids, since most people aren’t in the $2 million car market. Instead, their goal is incorporate the benefits of electric power into the world of supercars. Like many electric cars, the Sián produces energy while braking. During acceleration, it practically erupts, delivering the blast of power high-performance drivers expect. While the V12 engine still does the majority of the work, the hybrid components help the Sián explode from zero to sixty in just under three seconds and hit top speeds of 217 mph.

Electric car enthusiasts might note that these specs can’t compete with the upcoming Tesla Roadster, which can make 0-60 in just over two seconds and reach a top speed of 250 mph, all for a price tag of just $200,000—ten times less than the Sián. The extra $1.8 million seems like an awful lot to pay for a flashy exterior design masking inferior performance, though that may not be an impediment for die hard, wealthy Lambo fans.

Supercapacitors offer some promise, but they’re a long way from the mass market. They’re expensive, and with their short energy retention, they can’t power the Sián—or any other car—without help from another power source. Lamborghini is working with the experts at M.I.T. to expand the capabilities and possibly create the first electric supercar sometime down the road.

The post Lamborghini Hits the Hybrid Car Market with Innovative Supercar Sián first appeared on Dornob.

The image depicted a muscular truck carrying a Ford F-150 on its back. It was certainly an arresting image — one that seemed part fantasy, part jab at Ford and their profit-carrying truck. One article even said that the announcement felt like a joke, but that releasing the image of what an electric pick-up could look like was a step in the right direction for Tesla.
Shock, awe, and ridicule aside, Musk was serious. According to him, it really will be “a pick-up truck that can carry a pick-up truck.” As he stated in the 2016 master plan, it will be “a new kind of pick-up truck.”
In the last 35 years, no vehicle has been sold more in the U.S. than the Ford F-150. If Tesla plans to dethrone it, they’ll have to produce a vehicle that offers us all that Ford’s does and then some.
Musk has been ruminating on the truck’s design and engineering components for about five years now and proclaims that it will have a “game-changing” feature. The ability to use surplus electricity to charge tools would indeed be a pragmatic game-changer.
Those worried about the company’s problematic production history will be happy to hear that Tesla is not developing its pick-up truck from scratch. It’s simply taking the specifications of the Tesla Semi and minimizing them for the new concept. The company used a similar development strategy when working on the Model 3 car and the Model Y SUV, using some components from the former to design the latter. Judging by the specs of the Semi, which has a range of 500 miles per charge and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just five seconds with nothing in tow, we have an idea of what to expect from the pick-up. Tesla hopes that the average person will be able to operate it, but that seems unlikely given the licensing requirements for vehicles that large in most jurisdictions.

The electric pick-up is expected to be rolled out after production of the Model 3 and development of the Model Y have ended. It should be revealed to the public sometime between October 2018 and April 2019, with production starting no later than 2021. However, with a smaller-than-expected scope of delivery for the Model 3, projected dates and figures are just guesses at this point.
What Tesla must remember is that competition in the pick-up truck arena is coming soon, especially when it comes to electric models.
In the Spring of 2017, Workhorse Group unveiled their W-15 electric pick-up truck, which the company hopes will be driven by fleet operators as early as 2018. The W-15 takes 5.5 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph but only has a range of 80 miles, and its electricity is generated by a three-cylinder engine. Despite these limitations, several energy authorities in the U.S. have already expressed interest working the W-15 into their fleets.

Ford, committed to maintaining its supremacy, has their hybrid F-150 scheduled for release in 2020.

Development service company Italdesign recently threw a big shindig in Turin, celebrating 50 years of working alongside the world’s leading car manufacturers. Founded by Georgette Giugiaro and Aldo Mantovani, the company assists their clients in the process of creating vehicles from conception to the start of production.

“We are proud of what we have achieved in these fifty years,” says CEO Jörg Astalosch. “Italdesign has always stood out for its ability to dare, to be ahead of its time and anticipate the industry’s needs, working daily to raise the bar of quality standards. If we look at the many prototypes we are proud to have at our Moncalieri headquarters, which were inspirational for many successful projects for our customers, this attitude for innovation — never an end in itself — is evident even after many decades.”

30 prototypes and production models that have marked significant points in Italdesign’s history were showcased inside the courtyard of the Castello del Valentino during the fourth edition of the Turin Auto Show.

1968 Bizzarrini Manta

The Bizzarrini looks as bizarre as its name suggests. With a shuttle-like build, this car looks better suited for outer space than it does for the everyday commute.

1971 BMW M1

This made-to-race car was personally designed by Italdesign’s Georgette Giugiaro and is entirely hand-built. At the time of its launch, it was one of the fastest and most dynamic cars on the market.

1974 VW Golf

The 1974 Golf was introduced as Volkswagen’s successor to the iconic Beetle. As a test of the car’s durability, two Golfs were driven over 30,000 kilometers from Alaska to Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego in 1974.

1978 Lancia Megagamma

The Lancia Megagamma was released during a time when cars were mainly judged by their lengths. This small concept van was the perfect vehicle for a family.

1981 DeLorean DMC 12

The Delorean was a sports car manufactured by John Delorean and his motor company. The car was purposed for the American market but only lasted from 1981 to 1983. Of course, the car was later made famous by the movie Back to the Future, in which it could travel through time.

Panda 4×4 Strip

This Fiat was a concept vehicle with a completely open seating area, no doors, and pick-up truck-like storage.

1984 Capsula

The body of the original Capsula could separate, allowing for different upper cabins to be placed over the same chassis. The vehicle was also made with extra storage space to serve those with tool-based careers.

1986 Machimoto

The 1986 Machimoto was created on the Volkswagen Golf platform. Designed with an open cab to mimic the sensation of riding a motorcycle, this car’s flexible seating platform allowed up to nine people to sit in it!

1988 Aspid, Asgard, and Aztec

With the Aztec, the driver and passenger are seated separately, but at least there’s a handy electronic communication link between them!

1992 Biga

The Biga is an eco-friendly model that can be mass-produced rather easily. It leaves no room for anything superfluous, as it was made to be the minimalist car of its time.

1992 Lucciola

The Lucciola was created to be hybrid, compact, light, and eco-friendly. It’s made out of recyclable materials and boasts an aluminium body.

1993 BMW Nazca C2

The C2 was made as an upgrade from the M12, with only a few changes actually worth noting. This project never made it beyond its prototype phase.

1998 Chiron

This deep blue two-seater sports car was a popular choice when entering races. Buggati named the Chiron in honor of Bugatti racecar driver Louis Chiron.

1998 Structura

The Structura was designed with a view to the future and was the official car for Turin’s candidacy for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games.

2000 Maserati Buran

This luxury, ultra-high performing range leader took inspiration for its general layout from hatchback limousines. The Buran offered sophisticated services with its elegant interiors.

2001 Aston Martin Twenty Twenty

The 2001 Aston Martin was the first of its kind to offer an open top. As you can probably tell from its name, the car was designed for the year 2020, with its sleek aesthetic giving off ultra-futuristic vibes.

2001 Volkswagen W12 Nardò

This Volkswagen is about as fast as it looks. On February 23rd, 2002, the W12 shattered world records for vehicular speed, covering a distance of 7740.576 kilometers at an average speed of 322.891 km/h.

2002 Alfa Romeo Brera

Brera took the 2004 Compasso d’Oro Award for its excellence in performance. Contemporary, elegant, refined, and essential — this car has it all.

2003 Corvette Moray

It goes without saying that this iconic American sport car pays attention to every detail. The Moray offers wave-like indents and long tapering headlights to keep you and your passengers intrigued.

2004 Alessandro Volta

The production of the Volta was dedicated to Alessandro Volta, the Italian physicist who invented the battery. As a matter of fact, the car was invented to promote a new approach to building eco-friendly automobiles.

2005 Ferrari GG50

“To celebrate 50 years working in car design, I wanted to make a Ferrari for myself that I could use with my family”, says Giorgetto Giugiaro. GG50’s name comes from Giugiaro’s initials, boasting the number 50 to celebrate the length of his design career.

2006 Mustang

Modeled after a standard fifth-generation Ford Mustang, this upgraded model by Giugiaro changes the styling and design of both the car’s interior and exterior.

2008 Italdesign Quaranta

Quaranta takes on a single-volume shape and provides step-in access to its cabin. Instead of opening the door to exit, you just have to push an electric on/off button. After that, the doors should swing open upwards in a downwind direction.

2009 Giugiaro Namir

The Namir was unveiled during the 79th International Motor Show in Geneva, being billed as the fastest and most ecological hybrid in the world. This release was a major turning point for sports cars fueled by hybrid systems.

2012 Brivido

“This is a quest for a genuine four-seater,” Giugiaro says, “to offer comfort and visibility, especially for the rear passengers, which are usually sacrificed in this type of vehicle.” The fancy sports car allows optimal natural light to pour through and provides far more leg room than usual.

2013 Parkour

“Parkour was devised as a new way of living and experiencing a metropolitan route creatively,” explains Giugiaro. “Parkour enthusiasts, who are referred to as traceurs or plotters, adapt their body to the surrounding environment, pursuing, through their movements, not just spectacle but instead mainly maximum efficiency. The purpose of parkour is to move around as efficiently as possible. By efficiently I mean: simply, quickly, and safely, [all of] which are characteristic features of our car.”

2016 GTZero

Keeping the environment’s future state in mind, the GTZero was built as a zero-emissions vehicle. Its clean design includes a comfortable passenger compartment, which can seat either two adults and two children or three adults and one child.

2017 Audi TT

The Audi TT is a compact two-door sports car. Its sporty aesthetic is perfect for everyday travel.

2017 Zerouno

The Zerouno debuted at Geneva’s 87th International Motor Show in 2017 — the first car under the new brand Italdesign Automobili Speciali. The vehicle’s racecar features have been adapted to accommodate normal commuting conditions.

2018 Zerouno Duerta

The Zerouno Duerta is phase two for Italdesign Automobili Speciali. Its carbon fiber body was chosen to promote lightness and aerodynamics as the core elements in the new design.

The post 30 Cars for 50 Years of History: Italdesign Celebrates 50th Anniversary in Turin first appeared on Dornob.

The Sno-Go Ski Bike is a fun hybrid that can handle powder, bumps, tree trails, and all kinds of other obstacles. The inventors say it’s easy enough to ride, too. “We are blurring the boundaries of skiing and downhill mountain biking,” they explain. “You get the benefit of feeling planted and secure without having to worry about catching an edge or being strapped to bulky equipment,” they add, stressing the freedom and exhilaration of hurtling down the slopes.

That “feeling planted” sensation is the result of the Sno-Go’s unusual three-ski design. The ski bike uses S.L.A.T., or Synchronized Lateral Articulating Technology, to give you stability and maximum control, and its 13 pivot points let you turn on a dime simply by steering and pushing down on the handlebars.

Want to tackle a bump or jump? Simply pull back on the handlebars to lift the front of the Sno-Go. Stopping — yes, that’s important! — is easy enough, too. Just lean your weight over to one side and cut into the snow, as you would if you were skiing.

The company used a similarly intuitive mix of skiing, biking, and snowboarding techniques when designing the Sno-Go to make the mountains more accessible to people of all ages and skill levels.

The Sno-Go was built using 6061 aircraft-quality heat-treated aluminum alloy, so you know it’ll be durable no matter what terrain you throw at it, and you don’t need to worry too much about rust, because all of its hardware is stainless steel. It’s obvious that no detail has been overlooked in the design process. “From the Rock Shox front suspension to the all-mountain wood core twin tip skis, every inch of the bike has been drilled down to a science for making the ride smooth and controlled,” the company says.

The Sno-Go team recommends that users wear sturdy boots with plenty of support and thick rubber soles when riding to keep their feet safe, comfortable, and toasty in the foot grips. Snowboarding boots will do the trick, if you have them.

If you’re wondering how you’ll get the Sno-Go to the top of the mountain, don’t worry. There’s a chair-lift hook on it, so you and the bike can ride up easily and safely, arriving in position and ready to hit the snow. And after you’ve enjoyed your last run of the day, you’ll be thankful for the bike’s quick-release system, which makes it easy to break down for storage.

The Sno-Go ran a successful crowdfunding campaign and is on track to start shipping in January, just in time for prime snow conditions. We predict a sharp rise in anxious weather forecast watching, with many people fervently hoping for snow days in the months to come.

The company says that currently, more than 200 ski resorts in North America allow ski-bikes, and that number is only going up. It advises that customers check with their favorite ones before taking the plunge and investing in a Sno-Go.

The post Sno-Go: Is it a Bike?

Perhaps you already expect a lot from a hybrid commuter car with a relatively hefty price tag: it should be comfortable and reliable, with a smooth ride, of all the latest technology and a miles-per-gallon average that blows conventional gas-powered cars out of the water.

The Toyota Prius ticks off most of these boxes and then some, making it a popular choice for everything from running errands in the city to extended road trips. But, you can’t exactly use it as a camper—or can you? While a surprising number of Prius owners have creatively DIY’d their way to making this compact car work as a home base for road trips, it’s never going to comfortably sleep more than two people—unless you pick up a little something at Camp Inn.

The Japan-based camper manufacturer took automobile enthusiasts by surprise when it unveiled this wacky Toyota Prius converter at the Tokyo Auto Salon. Attendees were initially taken aback by the strange appearance of the apparatus, with AutoBlog saying it looked like the car “was under attack from a giant marshmallow from outer space.” Others described it as a tumor-like growth and a bizarre appendage. It’s true that the camper accessory, made of fiber-reinforced plastic and officially named ‘The Relax Cabin,’ is a bit odd, and makes no effort to look like anything other than the aftermarket add-on it is.

Exactly how it hooks onto the back of the Prius isn’t specified, but one can only imagine it’s got some hooks, straps and other stabilizers to make sure the whole thing doesn’t go flying off into the highway as soon as you hit 60mph. Once secured, it extends the Prius’ bodywork out to 16.34 feet, a considerable increase from its usual size but still well under the length of most RVs and car-and-trailer configurations.

At a price tag of over $52,000 on top of the $24,200 MSRP for a 2016 Prius, ‘The Relax Cabin’ isn’t exactly competitive with other camper options. What do you get for all that dough? Room for four to five people to sleep, with three on the convertible bed in the back and two in an overhead sleeping loft, not to mention a significant dip in your fuel economy. At least it’s aerodynamic.

The height of the add-on is pretty nice, though, allowing shorter adults to stand fully upright, and you could potentially fit a folding table and a couple of chairs into the back in chilly or rainy weather. CampInn offers an optional retractible coffee table and/or side sofa. The whole thing is thermally insulated, it has its own battery charging system so that you don’t drain the car battery, and the interior panels are finished in leather. LED indoor lighting is integrated, the entrance is carpeted and there’s a high-mount glass electric sunroof.

‘The Relax Cabin’ is still available on CampInn’s website in shades that match Prius body colors. Even if this unit doesn’t take off on its own, CampInn notes that it’s already gotten lots of attention as an innovation in the camper industry, and could influence more versatile options from a wide range of manufacturers in the future.

The post Camper Add-On Transforms Toyota Prius first appeared on Dornob.

Somewhere between a working office and a stretch limousine, this futuristic Volkswagen concept car gives new meaning to taking your work home with you.

Designed by, Alexander Zhukovsky the T6 vehicular office has two functional components tethered around a central pivot, a bit like those double-long buses already on the roads, or more like semi trucks with front cabs: a pair of pieces joined but without the need for creating contiguous space between them.

The question, of course, is: what sorts of situations require multiple people from the same office to hit the road at the same time? A lot of possibilities exist, if you give it some thought: a team of architects visiting a construction site, a corporate board prepping to attend a meeting, or a shared commute between coworkers in general.

Still, if driverless cars make their way to the roads soon enough, the front portion, reserved for the driver, may become redundant before anything like this would even be on the drawing boards at car companies. Of course, this is only a concept, so it’s not likely to appear on car lots anytime soon (or maybe ever?)

“Ethnographic expeditions to the Far North, the study of lifestyle and culture of the indigenous peoples of the Russian North, the study of applied arts on par with a modern design, interest in both traditional cultural values and the latest technology and futurology – all of these categories have formed my individual design concept and my own vision of the process. ‘I realized that design is the art of using past experience to create an experience of the future. It’s like a bridge in time. This bridge is built on experiences, emotions, feelings, observations, calculations and research, and it takes form in an attractive and useful product to facilitate and decorate our daily life.'”

The post Futuristic Office on Wheels first appeared on Dornob.

You could call it an experiment in social engineering, or simply a good excuse to talk to a cute stranger – either way, the entire thing is somewhat far-fetched but so playfully imaginative you can’t help but want to try sitting at one.

Dutch designer, Teun, pictures these rocking seats in both private and public settings as sort of three-dimensional teeter-totters dependent on multiple people to make them ‘work’ as intended.

“Waiting in public spaces always could be more fun. With that goal I designed the CHITCHAT. A swinging seat from multiplex or polyester for one to seven people. If you take a seat, you bring the furniture and everyone who is sitting on it in motion. This almost always leads to interaction. It has something surprising and you get to talk about it to your neighbor. Strangers are searching together for the best balance. The ice breaks, the atmosphere improves and the waiting is less boring. The ‘rocking trees’ in the middle provide a playful effect, especially with more CHITCHATS in one space.”

Interested? You can get one or more of these rocking group seats from Design Meubels starting at €8,200 depending on the options you choose. The ChitChat is available in polyester (white for both indoor and outdoor use, other RAL colors only for indoor use), in polyester with wooden seat (price on request) and in a fully wooden version (price on request).

About the designer:

“Teun Fleskens is a product and interior designer. In a few words his style could be described as experimental, communicating, pure, natural versus industrial and clearly present but not demanding. What’s most important about his designs is that my products are not only functional but overall meaningful. The concept is very important. This can be a serious statement or just making a smile appear: capturing the essence of this conceptual thinking into a minimalistic design.”

The post ChitChat: Public Seating that Rocks first appeared on Dornob.

This luxury modular bed by Hugo de Ruiter may be the first truly novel idea for an adaptable bed-and-couch combination seen in quite some time. A focus shift is the key: instead of forcing the main mattress area to fold, twist or otherwise contort itself into a new configuration, the flexible modular headboard makes all the changes you need.

The result isn’t exactly a typical sofa, but the movable leather elements do let you use the space in different-but-similar ways, for lounging together, reading apart, or anything in between. Designer Hugo de Ruiter created this for De Sede, the Swiss luxury leather furniture manufacturer whose designs are in high demand on exclusive sites like 1stDibs. You can find “De Sede DS-1165” there for a cool $22,640.

About Hugo de Ruiter

“I consider upholstered furniture to be like a third skin. Just like a good piece of clothing, your furniture should be comfortable and suit you in many ways. My designs are dynamic in both shape and use. Components that are easy to move or shift ensure that the piece of furniture is perfectly adjustable to its user and thus able to keep up with daily life. This can range from a private moment or an intimate gathering to active comfort during the day or a lazy evening on the couch. A compact table ingeniously doubles in size to offer a warm welcome to friends at night.
In my work I call this (E)motion.”

The post This Luxury Modular Bed Transforms From Day to Night first appeared on Dornob.

Per the pair of architects from Manada, “from one side the precision that characterizes German design, and on the other side the handcrafting skills of Mexican artisans.” A desk is added to the back, using the weight of the main solid-wood structure to balance out its two simple legs.

From Studio KG, the Binpan and Ductpan each have the usual flattened lips, then add a twist.

The former ties the pan function directly into the dust bin – the latter simply adds an easier way to channel dirt into your ordinary wastepaper basket.

The post 2 Ingenious Dustpan Hybrids to Make Cleaning a Little Easier first appeared on Dornob.

Sandwiched between two outer layers of conventional glazing sits a liquid crystal polymer membrane that can be activated by remote control or turned on (opaque) and off (see through) via conventional light switches.

Such shifts in opacity mean the same surface can serve as a window, partition, privacy screen or projection surface. Prefabricated with the synthetic core in place, units can be safely brought to and installed on residential or commercial building sites with ease.

This hybrid glazing comes in panels up to ten feet by ten feet, making them potentially applicable in large-scale, floor-to-ceiling settings as well as smaller room-to-room doors and dividers. Design by Russian door makers of Mauer Buro (translates as: wall office).

“It is a laminated glass, between two sheets of which there is a polymer film with a semiconductor on liquid crystals – Magic Screen Film. Thanks to her, the glass can change light transmission, becoming either transparent or matte.”

“Control can be carried out both from a conventional switch, and using a remote control, a motion sensor or a ‘smart home’ system. The working area of electrochromic glass consists of liquid crystal particles located between two layers of a special electrically conductive film. In the off state, the crystals are arranged randomly, forming an opaque matte white surface. When voltage is applied, the crystals instantly take a parallel position with respect to the electric field and the glass becomes transparent, allowing the light flux to penetrate into the room without hindrance. Magic Glass not only delimits the space in the room, but can also serve as a projection screen.”

What a wild idea: twist metal table legs into a framework for food-growing greenery right where you eat – maybe a bit messy indoors, but for a patio dining table the effect could be quite lovely.

Per Liam Healy and Jamie Elliott of JAILmake, “The Plantable reintroduces nature back into the experience of gathering, cooking and eating a meal. It takes a currently domesticated object and enables nature to claim it back.”

“The space provided for plants to grow in the four legs reflects on the distance we place between ourselves and the processes involved in making our food. We’ve tried and tested climbers, tomatoes, herbs and sweet peas.” Made to order, each piece is custom-bent into shape with a handmade English Oak tabletop lain across it. It is one of their many pieces reflecting guiding principles, “interests are in humans relationships- how we interact with and shape environments, our interactions with nature and how we learn based on experiences, playing and trying.”

The post PlanTable Hybrid: Ornate Metal Trellis + Wood Dinner Table first appeared on Dornob.
