Accentuate the Positive

Start by searching your home for existing architectural details you’d like to play up. Got an interesting front door? Paint it a bright color inside and out. Original wood trim around the doors and windows? Give it a boost with some furniture polish or shift the color with oil stain, which doesn’t require extensive sanding before use. Call attention to a cool ceiling with an attention-grabbing light fixture. If you have a fireplace, make it the centerpiece of the space by painting it (or the area around it) with a color that strongly contrasts the surrounding walls.

Faux Trim Work

If your space is completely lacking any interesting trim and you don’t have the budget or inclination to add it, there’s an easy fix: add strategic bands or blocks of paint to create the illusion of molding. You can make ceilings look higher and windows wider simply with a contrasting accent color, as explained by This Old House. You can even fake crown molding, panels, chair rails, and wainscoting with nothing more than paint and tape, as illustrated here.

DIY Ceiling Medallions

Decorative ceiling medallions instantly elevate the look of any room, and you might be surprised by how easy they are to install. Available at home improvement stores for as little as $20, they’re often made of PVC and come in a variety of styles. Wainscoting with Wallpaper

The price of wood is still sky-high, so installing real bead board wainscoting is a lot harder to fit into a tight budget right now. But did you know you can get textured foam wallpaper that’s almost indistinguishable from the real thing? Wayfair has 3D embossed pre-pasted wallpaper rolls that you simply moisten, apply, and paint. Milton and King also offers wainscoting wallpaper in a more formal Georgian-style print, though it isn’t 3D. You’ll want to top it off with real chair rail or picture rail, but if you’re only doing a single room, it doesn’t add up to much.

Add Salvaged Accents

If you aren’t already in on the secret of architectural salvage shops, find some in your area immediately. These shops accept salvaged wood, trim, windows, doors, hardware, and much more from remodel or demolition projects and resell them for much less money than the new items cost. You never know what you’ll find — grand columns, pristine Victorian cabinetry, midcentury modern details, and other accents can completely transform the character of your space for a modest investment.

Fake a Fancy Ceiling

If you already have picture rail or you’re interested in adding some, here’s an easy way to fake a tray ceiling: extend the ceiling paint down to the rail. Greenhill Renovation demonstrates how gorgeous this look can be on Instagram with forest green on the walls contrasting with white picture rail, crown molding, and ceiling paint. No rail? Again, you can fake one with a stripe of contrasting paint.

Chalkboard paint is another interesting way to add details, though it takes a bit more effort. Artist Rajiv Surendra painted the walls and ceiling with it, then used white chalk to draw on architectural elements.

Faux Built-In Elements

IKEA’s inexpensive and widely available Billy bookcase is a great starting point for the look of built-in shelving without the high price tag. It comes in several heights, and you can group together as many as you like to fit your space. One enterprising couple mixed them with IKEA Sektion kitchen base cabinets, spaced them all evenly using 2x4s, and then added crown molding and trim. The result looks just as expensive as the $9,000 they were quoted for a custom job, but it cost them just $1,500.

The History of Art Deco

Similar to popular car styles that trend every few years, some great features of art deco just can’t be denied. High contrast, inundated colors, bold silhouettes, daring bursts of chrome and brass — all of these make for classic accents that never lose their appeal.

The movement was born in France just before World War I broke out. It was a time of opulence and indulgence on many levels, and it influenced virtually every aspect of life. Glamor, fantasy, fun, and lavishness inspired everything from the design of ocean liners and vacuum cleaners to the day’s music, theater, and literature. Fashion was playful and alluring, boasting an abundance of rich materials, brilliant colors, and geometric patterns.

Many of the most beautiful examples of art deco can be found on buildings from this period. Today, some of those buildings are even being restored to keep their defining features intact. For example, One Wall Street, constructed in 1929, is currently having its exterior restored by Macklowe Properties. Not only will the structure’s historical limescale veneer be restored through this process, but its celebrated Red Room will also be refurbished to its original art deco splendor, with its triple-height floor-to-ceiling mural by Hildreth Miere acting as its focal point.

Originally a bank designed by Edwin Lutyens in 1928, Hotel Gotham in Manchester UK is now the city’s most famous five-star hotel. It’s been pristinely maintained for nearly 100 years, and visitors come from all over the world to stare at its majestic, palace-like exterior and Wall Street-inspired art deco interiors. The hotel’s regal appearance has even earned it the nickname “King of King Street.”

The New Art Deco

Today’s art deco features a lot more dramatic disparity in the way of wall displays and furniture selections. The colors are deeper and surrounded by even more brass and chrome. Geometric patterns and fabrics from the past like velvet and fringed material are already making a big comeback. And since there’s no real indication that this trend is going away any time soon, we only expect to see more varying combos of concrete, inlay, marble, lacquer, and smoked glass in the coming years. Burlwood, a throwback to the 60s and 70s, is also likely to resurface to heighten the emotional response expected from art deco.

Whether you’re into laid-back California surf style or the easy elegance of coastal New England, beach vibes can transform virtually any interior space by creating an atmosphere so relaxing, you could swear you were on vacation. But how exactly do you capture that feeling through your choices in furniture, decor, and wall colors? Here are some beach style decorating tips that will help you pull it off without veering into cheesy “themed” territory.

Breezy, Open Feel

Your first step is to make your space feel more open, airy, and bright. Let lots of daylight in while maintaining some privacy with sheer curtains in light colors or Roman-style window shades, and eliminate anything that feels too dark and heavy. Floors are one exception here, as long as you balance them out with the rest of the room. The deepest depths of the oceans still remain a mystery. It’s a place where ancient, bioluminescent creatures seem to live suspended in a dreamlike state. The order of jellyfish is pretty well explored, but they still have sense of alien magic. California designer Roxy Russell was inspired by these water inhabitants to has dream up the Medusae Collection of jellyfish lamps, gorgeous pendant lights with poetic names like Hydra, Ophelia and Medusa, characters from Greek mythology.

The diaphanous Medusa Pendant Lamp, ornate Polyp Pendant Lamp and ethereal Ophelia are made from velum finish polyester Mylar and white powder-coated aluminum. The designer works in recyclable PET (polyethylene terephthalate, a form of polyester), yet is very aware of the problems created by plastic debris in our oceans and the irony of adding to our ever-increasing plastic landscape. But she believes she is doing so consciously. After all, you wouldn’t toss these lamps the way one would empty water bottles or fast food packaging. The lamps are meant to endure, and possibly even remind us of the fragility of our ocean eco systems.

Russell donates a percentage of the profits to the Ocean Conservancy. The lamps arrive in a flat box and need to be assembled at home.

“The ocean is such a boundless source of inspiration for myself and many other people, in all fields. Unfortunately, I am also very concerned about the fragile state of it’s very complex eco-system.”

“I wanted to bring to the surface, and illuminate the growing problem of plastic polluting our oceans in a way that makes people inspired to help. We have a floating island of plastic garbage in the Pacific that is twice the size of Texas. Up to 70 percent of this plastic is below the surface, broken down into tiny pieces,becoming a toxic part of the eco-system. Countless fish and birds die from mistaking these bits for food.”

“This is an opportunity to look at how we might be contributing to the problem. Most people think it’s ok to use plastic bottles because they throw them in the recycle bin or think someone else will, but what they don’t realize is that much of the plastic that is manufactured never gets recycled.”

This interior redesign begins and ends in a wood ribbon, and is a case of quite literally ‘tying the interior together’ in a single unique gesture.

Created by KHBT (images by Johannes Marburg) and set in London, this lovely flat is modest and minimalist in almost every way – simple white surfaces from floor to wall to ceiling, and toned-down details … except for one wonderfully-warm stretch of wood that winds throughout.

It starts (or ends, depending on your perspective) as the sides and surface of the kitchen counter, then snakes through the hall and finally connects to the bathtub at the other end.

This use of walnut reflects their desire to reference traditional high-end apartments of the area. It also plays off of the potentially-awkward, higher-level entry from which occupants and visitors have to step down to access main areas.

“A rundown apartment in prestigious Mayfair has been transformed into an inhabitable sculpture. Formerly there were 2 separate residential units which have been connected with a space defining spine. Due to head height restrictions of the communal staircase running across this spine various steps and level changes had to be overcome. This lead to the main concept, a meandering ribbon which becomes an inherent part of all main functions of the flat: Kitchen, Stair, Circulation and Bathroom. Made out of precious massive walnut timber it creates a fitting character to the area and a contrasting element to the white flooring.”

“KHBT is a creative studio set up by Karsten Huneck and Bernd Trümpler in London and Berlin. KHBT has consistently created spatial works of local and international significance which are published widely as well as winning various awards such as the prestigious Young Architect Of The Year Award (YAYA)in 2009 where KHBT was gaining the first ever ‘special commendation’ in the competitions history. Karsten and Bernd are also partners of the experimental architectural network osa_office for subversive architecture which acts as a platform for spatial research that feeds into the practice.”
