When designing (or redesigning) their corporate offices, some companies focus on the kinds of outlandish bells and whistles that go viral on the internet. 10 years ago, that might have included giant slides, on-site pubs, or even an indoor lazy river. In more recent years, a pandemic-induced shift towards working from home has caused many companies to weigh their options between scaling down their physical headquarters or going even bigger to seduce employees back to campus. Of course, there’s also a quieter, more practical middle option, exemplified by the new Poetizer offices by architect Tomáš Císař and designer Johana Sedláčková Vamberská.

Located on the fourth floor of a First Republic building on Narodni Street in Prague, the Poetizer offices are minimalist yet romantic, much like the company itself. Poetizer is the world’s largest social network for poets and poetry lovers, providing a simple platform where millions of users from 120 countries can publish their creations in plain black text against a crisp white background. The designers wanted to capture the essence of the company and its focus on environmental protection, creating spaces where employees can feel relaxed and included.

At the center of the design is a beautiful indoor greenhouse space, “a wild jungle, a mythical Eden, an area that expresses the concept of wild thinking,” as Císar explains. “Thinking that, according to Claude Lévi-Strauss, is close to our ancient ancestors and contemporary poets. He contrasted this initially intuitive and associative thinking, which he likened to a rich rainforest ecosystem, with an already domesticated, strictly rational thinking.”

Set within a larger room, the greenhouse offers space for streaming poetry readings, lounging, and brainstorming. The gabled open metal frame hosts 171 living plants with over 100 species represented, and sofas and chairs facing each other for small meetings and conversations. Between the plants, the daylight streaming in from the adjacent windows, and the deck-like flooring, six or more occupants can get a little taste of the outdoors without leaving the office.

Just outside the greenhouse is the Poetizer HQ’s main room, containing two islands of individual workstations. The desks are on wheels so users can choose to either keep them grouped together or move them away for privacy and concentration.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Sleek minimalist kitchen space at the Tomas Cisar-designed Poetizer offices in Prague.
If employees want to get even more introspective, they can choose to enter a series of smaller study rooms, meeting rooms, and conference rooms in various sizes, all painted dramatic dark hues of green and blue. Feeling almost womb-like in contrast to the bright and open main room, these spaces get extra warmth from lots of wood, pops of red furniture, lush velvet textiles, moody lighting, and additional plants.

“Proud to design for Poetizer, the world’s biggest social network for poetry lovers and a digital publishing house,” says Císar. “The concept builds upon the focus and the minimalist identity of Poetizer. The center stage of the office is occupied by a greenhouse — the wild jungle, the mythical Eden. This boldly placed object creates a space to meet informally, to stream poetry readings, or just simply to relax. Thank you very much Lukáš Sedláček, CEO of Poetizer, for the opportunity and patience.”

The post Beautiful Indoor Greenhouse Takes Poetizer’s Prague Offices to the Next Level first appeared on Dornob.

Architecture firm TAROS NOVA has pulled off an impressive feat in the Czech Republic: the construction of the world’s longest suspension skywalk. Located at the Dolní Morava Mountain Resort in Horsky, Sky Bridge 721 spans an incredible 721 meters (about 2,365 feet) between two peaks of the Kralicky Snezník mountain. At its highest point, it’s a dizzying 95 meters (311 feet) above the ground of the valley below. It took two years to complete this complex engineering project, but the bridge opened to the public this spring, drawing crowds of visitors eager to test their ability to withstand stomach-turning heights.

The design of the bridge looks deceptively simple. It’s made of metal, with a solid surface to step on and chain link mesh on either side for safety. But figuring out exactly how to support it took some experimentation. “It was a long-distance run with occasional sprints from initial design, through design to completion of construction,” say the architects. “Professionalism, precision, and hard work [are at] the top of the list. How else to describe the more than 100 bridge variants, the countless structural analyses and calculations, the demanding coordination of design, production, logistics, and finally the construction itself.”

To access the bridge, visitors either take the ski resort’s chairlift to the entrance, or they can walk or bike all the way up the nearly 2.5-mile-long trail. Though it takes longer to cross, the experience of braving the Sky Bridge 721 is at least slightly less scary than that of China’s Hongyagu Scenic Area, which spans 1,601 feet and features a walkway made of glass panels. China has at least 60 such glass bridges, in fact (some of which have been known to crack on occasion).

Sky Bridge 721 overthrew the previous record-holder for the official title of “World’s Longest Suspension Bridge,” the 516 Arouca Bridge in Portugal. The runners-up include the Kokonoe Yume Bridge in Japan (1,280 feet) and the Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge in Switzerland (1,621 feet).

Sky Bridge 721 adds yet another reason to visit the Dolní Morava resort, whether you’re actually staying there or not. Previously, the area’s biggest draw was the Sky Walk Dolní Morava, a unique wooden structure spiraling from ground level to a height of 180 feet. Pedestrians climb the Sky Walk for beautiful views of the mountains as well as the valley of the River Morava. In the summertime, everything is lush and green. In winter, it’s shrouded in white, and most visitors also take advantage of spectacular skiing, bobsledding, and other snow-oriented activities.

The Sky Bridge and Sky Walk are also part of the “Bridge of Time,” an educational trail and game created as a collaboration between LESY ČR (Forests of the Czech Republic), the municipality of Dolní Morava, and the Museum of Czechoslovak Fortifications from 1935 to 1938. The Bridge of Time includes augmented reality elements and 10 educational panels, engaging visitors with both history and topics of environmental protection.

“An integral part of the game is the light fortification object at the beginning of the game (the so-called digger, “řopík”), from which you continue along a 2-kilometer-long marked route with educational panels,” the architects explain. “In order to complete the game, it is necessary to own a now-common smartphone and have access to the internet. Educational panels with tasks are arranged thematically and in time so that after nearly an hour’s easy walk along the marked trails, each visitor is brought back to the present. That is, to the starting point at the Slaměnka Hut.”

The post Sky Bridge 721: The Czech Republic is Now Home to the World’s Longest Suspension Bridge first appeared on Dornob.

A structure of sloping roofs and plazas conceived by Danish architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) took first place in a recent international design competition hosted by the City of Prague. Beating out renowned firms like Snøhetta, David Chipperfield Architects, SANAA, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and Ateliers Jean Nouvel, BIG’s plan for the Vltava Philharmonic Hall impressed the judges with its ability to connect visitors with the surrounding cityscape.

“Many aspects had to be taken into account when selecting the winning design,” explains Michal Sedláček, chairman of the competition’s jury. “The site for the philharmonic hall currently complicates the opportunity for people to meet instead of encouraging it, so the emphasis was not only on the architecture and operation of the building, but also on the design of the public spaces in the surrounding area. The Vltava Philharmonic Hall will become a vibrant center of life in Vltavská street — a new city park will stretch eastwards from the building, the south side will open up access to the water, a square will be created on the west side, and there will be a view of the new Bubny-Zátory district to the north. The building itself will be accessible from all directions and levels.”

To fortify Prague’s reputation as a European capital of culture, BIG architects embraced elements of music and rhythm in the 1,800-seat concert hall’s layout and details.

“The new Vltava Philharmonic Hall will be a symbol of openness, accessibility, and exploration,” says BIG partner Brian Yang. “From the Vltava square, streets ascend upward connecting interior balconies with exterior colonnades and terraces. Like eight, quarter, half, and whole notes, the step, the benches, facade, and colonnade are perfectly on beat, offering its resident orchestras effective and extroverted rehearsal areas, while bringing audiences within the halls closer to the source in an environment that is both majestic and intimate.”

Concert goers and other visitors can use the walkable rooflines to climb up the building’s exterior to reach a future rooftop café. Inside the building, three separate performance halls will serve as the home base for both the Prague Symphony Orchestra and the Czech Philharmonic. The concert hall will also house the music archives of Prague’s Municipal Library on one floor.

“The Vltava Philharmonic Hall is composed as a meandering journey from riverbank to rooftop,” explains BIG founder and partner Bjarke Ingels. “Public flows and belvedere plazas unite the city life of Prague to the music within…Expressive yet pragmatic, the new Philharmonic will ascend to form a key landmark for Prague from river to roof.”

Where do you go for interior design inspiration? If your answer involves social media sites like Instagram and Pinterest, you might have a hard time coming up with ideas that are truly unique and original. With their creative renovations of attic apartments in Prague, two architecture firms demonstrate a better way: turn to your favorite works of art instead. For “The Art Maisonette” in the Letná district, Esté Architekti referenced the owners’ love of Czech graffiti art, while No Architects took inspiration from two modern paintings belonging to the owners of “Maisonette 69” in the Žižkov district.

The Art Maisonette

Esté Architekti remodeled The Art Maisonette as part of a larger renovation of the 1930s building in which it’s located. Preserving original details like the oak parquet floors and original concrete screeds on the walls, the architects introduced a new open layout to give the space a brighter, more modern feeling. The original wood beams stand out more than ever against crisp white surfaces, all the better for drawing the eye to the works of art the owners love so much. Everything is clean and neutral to provide an almost gallery-like backdrop, even the angles of the ceilings working to point out the art.

The apartment is centered around a chimney wall, with the two levels connected by a straight steel staircase featuring a transparent glass railing. The few colors purposely injected into the interior design are pulled straight from the art on display, including a vivid blue closet. As you move from room to room, the artwork almost strings together a loose narrative, prompting you to look for the next piece you know will be around each corner you turn.

“The rule of working with empathy for specific people, their lives and needs has been confirmed,” says Esté Architekti. “To step outside our comfortable minimalist design zone, the investors themselves inspired us with their distinctive taste and the investor’s non-conforming wardrobe.”

Maisonette 69

The art-loving owners of this Prague apartment asked No Architects to base their design on two paintings in their collection. The first is Number Sixty-Nine, a painting by Vladimír Houdek, which carries a special meaning for them. Hung in the kitchen, this graphic painting informed the aesthetics of the custom furniture throughout the home, the color palette in the kitchen and a fun custom heating cover branded with a 69 motif. Even the jagged contours of the kitchen cabinets are drawn from the frayed edges of the painting.

The second painting is a piece called Cesta domů by Josef Bolf, hanging on the living room wall. Contrasting the playfulness of Number Sixty-Nine, this one has a dark and melancholy quality echoed in the gray backdrop of the wall it’s mounted upon, as well as the teardrop-shaped pendant lighting in the kitchen opposite. It even visually connects to a massive multi-story waterfall mural by Patrik Hábl on an adjacent building, which can be glimpsed from the balcony.

Colors from both paintings are carried up into the private rooms, like a children’s playroom beneath a skylight upstairs. The custom furniture is gorgeous in its own right, like a pale blue built-in wardrobe full of vertical storage and decorated with circular wood inlays. Curving oak veneers within the stairwell soften the space, which is a 1990s-era attic extension of the original building.

“It is a simple living space for a family who understands art and wants to appreciate and enjoy it,” say the architects. “An interior where contemporary art is not just replaceable decoration.”

The post Two Chic Prague Apartment Renovations Draw Inspiration from Contemporary Art first appeared on Dornob.

For decades, arched doorways embedded in the embankment of Prague’s Vltava River hinted at mysterious spaces beyond. Now, those doorways have transformed into enormous elliptical windows that light up at night, welcoming the public into a whole new world of subterranean spaces. The project is part of the ongoing revitalization of the Czech capital’s riverbank, initiated in 2009, converting a formerly disused space into a lively waterfront promenade.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="View of a windowed Vltava River vault underneath a metal stairway leading down to the embankment.
Petr Janda of Brainwork Studio is the principal architect of the three-phase project, which starts with the renovation of 20 vaults set into the Rašín and Hořejší embankments in the area known as Náplavka. These hollowed-out spaces are referred to by the Czech government as “dungeons,” and in the past likely served as storage spaces for ice and goods arriving and departing in ships along the river. Now, they’ve been converted into shops, galleries, cafés, workshops, and public restroom facilities with curving walls and ceilings made of sandblasted concrete.

Six of the vaults have the stunning 5.5-meter (18-foot) pivoting windows in place of doors, which open at an offset angle and allow customers to step within their plastered minimalist interiors. Stepped stone details at the base of each arched doorway disguise elements like air conditioning ducts and flood prevention features. The rest of the vaults on the Hořejší embankment boast sculptural blackened steel doors. Each one has a multipurpose freestanding furniture unit that can function as a reception desk or bar counter, and the individual businesses occupying them are free to customize them as they like. At night, when the glass-fronted vaults are aglow, they draw in curious passersby who come to the area for farmers’ markets, exhibitions, concerts, and theater performances.

The next two phases of the restoration project, also spearheaded by Brainwork Studio, will include a floating pool (echoing the historical placement of swimming pools along the Vltava embankment) and a terminal for cruise ships. The floating pool facility is supported by a structural system of steel ribs, and the deck “appears boundless, thanks to its infinite water surface,” with a variety of depths suitable for different users and types of swimming. Floating restroom facilities that visually complement the pool will also be included in the design, accessible directly from the riverbank promenade.

The terminal will function as an amphibious intersection between the bank and the river, its appearance drawing from the visual character and traditional shapes of shipbuilding.

“Its predominant feature is the balance between the (in)visibility of the terminal and its strong architectural design derived from the nautical morphology, as well as the visual mimicry connecting the terminal with its native environment,” says Janda. “Thanks to the optical effect created by the deck edges tapering into cutting edges, it dematerializes more on both sides, which is emphasized by the reflection of the water and sky on both surfaces of the terminal wings. The basic shape is based on the spatial rotation of three propeller blades, which was further shaped with regard to the functional arrangement of the building.”

The post Prague’s Vltava River Vaults Feature Giant Pivoting Hobbit Doors first appeared on Dornob.

It may look odd, but enveloping an entire home within a glass greenhouse is a great way to make it more hospitable in punishing winter weather. We’ve seen this concept work brilliantly in Stockholm, where a pre-existing home was simply shielded by a structure made of four-millimeter security glass, and all the way up in the Arctic Circle in Norway. For the latter, a family built their own three-story cob home within a glass geodesic dome, allowing them to grow fruit trees, grapes, herbs, tomatoes, and squash well outside the brief summer growing season.

But what if you don’t want to go quite so far as literally living inside a bubble? A stylish new home by architecture studio Richard David Architekti offers a slightly less extreme take, topping a single-story modern residence with a second-story greenhouse in the shape of a normal gabled roof.

“House with a Greenhouse” is set within an orchard in the town of Chlum, Czech Republic. Each level of the home is conceived as its own distinct structure, creating a clear separation between the timber-clad living space and the greenhouse full of plants. The latter takes advantage of the warmth created by the home, stays warm enough to grow cacti year-round, and allows the residents 360-degree views of their property. Enjoying a typical European continental climate, the Czech Republic may not get quite as cold as the Arctic Circle, but it’s not uncommon for temperatures to dip into the 20s (Fahrenheit) in winter.

The base level of the home is made with masonry walls and concrete columns covered in vertically-oriented larch for a contemporary look. A black metal outdoor staircase leads up to the white steel-framed level, which is technically made of polycarbonate rather than glass for durability. Downstairs, the rooms are arranged so they can all be accessed from the wrap-around terrace outside.

As far as the architects are concerned, that ability to go straight outside from anywhere in the house is really the most special part of the design. Co-founder David Kazicky tells Dezeen that “this is definitely not typical in this part of the world. On the contrary, in some Asian countries it is quite common.”

For this project, the architects technically had plenty of space to work with, since the home comes with a sizable property all around it. But it’s easy to see how the concept could work beautifully for urban homes on ultra-compact plots, too. Perhaps it could even convert somehow for summer use, with some of the glass panels being removable for increased air circulation. Either way, the stacked concept is a great illustration of how we might rethink simple elements of common residential design — especially attics, which are often wasted space.

Looking almost parasitic in nature, an amorphous, ballooning silver volume stretches out to envelop a more traditional building in new renderings of Steven Holl Architects’ “Encased.” Chosen as the winner of an international competition to design a new concert hall in Ostrava, Czech Republic, the design adds to the existing House of Culture, itself an austere travertine-clad complex completed in 1961.

The new 1,300-seat concert hall is described by the architects as “a perfect acoustic instrument in its case,” hence the name. It’ll soon house the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra, too — the nation’s leading orchestra for commissioning contemporary music.

The metallic, vaguely alien nature of the exterior is softened by an interior lined with warm maple wood. Built on both sides of the House of Culture’s wings, the structure features dramatic cantilevered elements with a wide base at the rear and a slender, neck-like volume in the front. If you’re prone to seeing the shapes of living creatures in architecture, you might imagine the addition as either embracing or biting down upon the existing building, depending on how you look at it.

“The smooth case of zinc holds an ‘instrument’ in an extended vineyard-type plan made of concrete and maple wood,” explain the architects. “Czech composer Leoš Janáček’s theories of time will guide and give order to the concert hall’s interior geometry. Acoustic wall panels are organized according to scasovani, or rhythm, in three variants: znici = sounding, scitaci = counting, and scelovac = summing.”

They add that the hall faces the existing park at the rear of the building in order to soften urban traffic noise, while a new entrance on the promenade “rises to glide over the top of the existing historical Cultural Center in a sky-lit lobby for the new hall… a dramatic complimentary contrast between new and old creates a cultural landmark for Ostrava.”

Of the winning design, jurist Rafi Segal says, “It’s not the size of the building, but the importance and significance of it.” Another jury member, Krzysztof Ingarden, says “it is a fantastic piece of architecture [that considers] very well the relationship between the City of Ostrava and the park behind the existing building. I believe the winning project will be an emblematic piece of architecture for Ostrava [and revitalize] the city as well.”

Steven Holl Architects is known for taking risks with unconventional architectural shapes and forms like Maggie’s Centre Barts in London, monolithic metal-clad desert homes, and the delightful organic modernist “Ex of In” House. Most of the time, those risks pay off in spectacular fashion, with finished projects feeling fresh and unexpected.

Sometimes, their radical vision for architecture unconstricted by rectilinear norms hits predictable engineering snags, however, like their so-called Copenhagen Gate: the bike lane in the sky that might have been but got canceled due to safety concerns.

Construction hasn’t yet begun on this project, but it’s unlikely the new Ostrava Concert Hall will be plagued with similar problems. It’s set to open in 2023 and will be produced in collaboration with the Czech firm Architecture Arts.

By working the kindergarten into the development, the planners hope that the area will soon blossom into an energetic community within a community.

From the onset of the project, principal architect Petr Stolín knew the school would have to have a small footprint. Indeed, the completed Nová Ruda only takes up 9,849 square feet, so to make it seem larger and brighter, Stolín opted to split the mass of the building down the middle to create an inner courtyard. He then decided to wrap the entire thing up in a transparent cloak. From the outside, only the solid forms of the classrooms and facilities can be seen, allowing students and staff to walk around the premises in relative privacy. Play and rest spaces are located on the lower levels, with two 25-desk classrooms, a 30-seat dining area, and rooftop terraces above. Both classrooms have skylights and interior windows overlooking the playgrounds.

By working in elements like the fiberglass façade, large windows, and lights of various colors, Stolín has truly played up the role of light at Nová Ruda. On top of that, the windows’ orientation makes for unexpected relationships between spaces, giving children and staff quirky views to both the courtyard and the world around them. These elements of fun in the kindergarten’s architecture are great for appealing to the children’s sense of wonder and adventure , but more importantly, they provide them with a refreshing learning experience.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-64383" src="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Image5_Nová-Ruda-kindergarten_Photos-by-Alex-shoots-buildings_Source-afasiaarchzine.com_.jpg" alt="A small green playspace nestled in between the Nová Ruda Kindergarten's semi-transparent walls.
Stolín did not want to design a typical school with an adjacent yard contained in a fence — though it’s not like he had the space to do so anyways. Instead, he flipped the concept of standard school design by putting the play areas at the center and then surrounding them with the learning spaces. Since recess is likely to be the best part of the day for most schoolchildren, the kindergarten’s architecture reads like a physical representation of how we use their desire for play as a way to teach them about themselves and getting along with one another.

The opening of a new school is always a milestone achievement for a community because it marks the beginning of a promising future. After all, each child who is educated there will grow to provide value to that community. The inverse of this is also true when a community closes a school, because it’s a sign that the present has been prioritized over the future. That’s why building educational facilities where children can learn in encouraging environments should always be celebrated.

The post At Nová Ruda Kindergarten, Learning and Play Become One first appeared on Dornob.

What Is It?

The newly designed Long Story Short Hostel in Olomouc, Czech Republic has obliterated those heathen stereotypes surrounding city hostels and sent a wave rippling through the millennial travel scene. Enticing every instagrammer and travel blogger to indulge in their artistic and minimalistic abodes, the architects behind this glorious build aim to change the perception of Europe’s usually dismal-looking low-end accommodations.

The Long Story Short is comparable, and in some circumstances even preferable, to a 4-star hotel, featuring an onsite café and fully equipped dormitories and double bedrooms. Taking up the whole first floor of a 17th-century fortress known as Podkova, the hostel inherits a rich history (which also makes for an attractive backstory). Podkova translates to “horseshoe” — a word that references the “U” shape of the structure.

Who Created It?

Initiated by Eva Dlablova and designed by Denisa Strmiskova, the hostel was created from scratch and opened just two years after its first ideation. Strmiskova kept the majority of the space pure white in order to create a clean and calm environment accentuated by soft pastel palettes and black details.

What Are Its Features?

The majority of the rooms feature custom-made furniture: lamps, beds, mirrors, shelving, and bathroom appliances are all made to measure by local artisans, including Master & Master and RAV Slezák. Berker provided the Bakelite switches whilst the lamps came from Marset. The hostel’s interior lighting was done by Bulb and Ewerel, its many artworks created by local artist David Minarik, and its overall identity developed by graphic designer Jan Košátko. Košátko wanted to fuse the building’s original history with a modernist twist, so he used raw materials like stone, wood, and metal against softer textiles like those of the vintage furniture pieces. In order to create the desired ambiance for the rooms, the designers played with the lighting until it emitted just the right vibe.

With a total of 56 beds across an array of different-sized rooms including dorms, private lodgings, and even a wedding suite, the Long Story Short offers options for every sleeping preference. As previously mentioned, there is a café situated at the heart of the building, which also acts as a reception and common area. Plans are already in place for the current hostel to be expanded, a project that would include the addition of common areas like an outside terrace with a kitchen island and cocktail bar under a pergola, and eventually, a restaurant.

How Can I Book a Room?

Unbelievably, stays at the Long Story Short begin at just $16 per night, and bookings can be made directly through the hostel’s website. The following are currently available to book: “The Big One,” “Private Rooms,” “Girls Choice,” and Mixed Dorms.

“The Big One” boasts a deluxe king-sized bed, a fancy freestanding bathtub, heated floors, a wet room, complimentary bath bombs, a hairdryer, a private bathroom, an extra bed, a minibar, and a 55-inch Smart TV — perfect for a cozy weekend getaway for couples and anyone else who wants to escape the crazy world for a little while!

The “Private Rooms” are available in three layouts: the “Nook,” the “Arc,” and the “Duo,” all named after their aesthetic features. The Nook separates the bedroom from the rest of the unit, while the Arc simply has the bed area encircled by an indentation in the wall. The Duo allows two people to sleep in the bed and has a pull-out sofa bed, which can sleep two more in case you have guests!

Don’t waste your money on a 14-bed hostel dorm where you’ll be sleeping among cockroaches and limescale — begin your adventure with Long Story Short.

The post Chic & Affordable Czech Republic Hostel first appeared on Dornob.

Suspended beneath an old abandoned railway bridge in Pardubice, Czech Republic, the Black Flying House invites anyone walking by it to make a decision: will they attempt to go inside? More pertinently, how does one even get inside?

This tiny hut-like dwelling hangs in midair and is too high up for anyone to enter without at least a little assistance. The surrounding area bears a foreboding atmosphere, as if daring the most courageous of passerby to attempt an entry into the house. Even if you do muster the nerve to go in, it seems like you’ll have to come up with an inventive approach. Lucky for all of us, the architects who designed this eerie installation have hidden a perfectly sized ladder nearby.

Pardubice is situated in the Czech Republic’s Eastern Bohemia region, an area that was mistakenly used to name the popular French art movement of the 19th century. The Wikipedia definition of “Bohemian” reads: “Bohemianism is the practice of an unconventional lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people, with few permanent ties, involving musical, artistic, literary, or spiritual pursuits. In this context, Bohemians may or may not be wanderers, adventurers, or vagabonds.” This description perfectly reflects the free-floating Black Flying House, which is sure to reward any artistically-inclined wanderer who stumbles upon it with an unforgettable experience and source of inspiration.

Boasting a steeply-pitched roof, a set of rectangular windows, a door, and even a chimney, this wooden structure has been suspended from thick steel cables, which in turn have been attached to the underside of the bridge overhead. The Black Flying House has a shadowy appeal, offering no clue as to what will be inside its walls until a curious adventurer locates the ladder and sees for themselves.

Designed to be a “conundrum that encourages passersby to think,” Black Flying House is the brainchild of H3T Architekti, a design studio founded in 2009 by the award-winning architects Vit Šimek and Štěpán Řehoř. The duo’s website explains, “[Our] projects are often temporary and located in unexpected contexts that eventually generate interesting situations and create new opportunities.”

Only a fifteen-minute walk from the city center, the Black Flying House is much less isolated than it might appear to be in photos. Once you’ve made it inside the installation, you’ll find a room that contains a stove, two chairs, and a sleeping loft. It may be small, but it makes for a great lookout point and temporary place to keep warm. If you’re feeling up to it, you can even stay in the house overnight! The architects describe it as “an installation that, with its austere rendition, responded to the mysterious atmosphere of the environment. We hoped it would bring some interesting experiences or feelings.”
Sadly, the aforementioned ”temporary nature” of H3T Architekti’s projects also proved to be true in this case. Just 39 days after it was first installed beneath the railway bridge, the Black Flying House had to be taken down in accordance with an order from local authorities.
All photos by Tomas Rasl and Martina Kubesova

The post “Flying House” in Czech Republic Floats Beneath a Bridge first appeared on Dornob.

Upon being asked to design a furniture showroom in Brno, Czech Republic, architects CHYBIK + KRISTOF set out to achieve an innovative marriage of style and function. However, their client, furniture manufacturers and suppliers MY DVA group, was operating on a tight budget. Not having a lot of other options, the architects were inspired to create an eye-catching and visually stimulating structural shell from a readily available resource. In the end, they decided to use one of the company’s own products to create the showroom’s facade. Simply put, they clad the structure in My DVA group’s own chairs.

The result of this inventive idea is an imposing exterior made up of 900 black, plastic chairs, all angled to resemble the graduated stacking of roofing tiles. This aesthetic is in keeping with Ondrej Chybik and Michal Kristof’s previous designs, which have all included elements of humor and reflected their buildings’ societal functions. Every one of the chairs featured in this exterior is a “Vicenza,” one of My DVA Group’s most popular pieces of furniture. The chairs are built from a durable, weatherproof plastic and supported by metal. Vicenzas line three of the building’s five outer surfaces and can easily be removed from the walls when the time comes to clean the entire structure. If any of the chairs should break or become damaged, the company can simply swap it out for a new one.

The surrounding commercial development of Vinohrady was constructed in the 1980s and is home to many furniture and supply manufacturers. Naturally, the uniform, repetitive look of the new shell more accurately reflects the area’s architectural style and offered goods. The building was originally used as a car showroom in the 1990s but kept a drab, unmemorable exterior. While the showroom retains its original structure, CHYBIK + KRISTOF’s masterstroke of simplicity and ergonomic form has turned it into a piece of timeless architecture.

The interior design has been executed almost as skillfully as the façade’s. Three sections are encased in white, floor-to-ceiling sling curtains, which can be opened or closed to accommodate product displays of all magnitudes. Alternatively, this space can be used to exhibit multiple lines of office, school, and designer furniture at the same time. White curtains are especially useful for reflecting light and simulating the bright atmospheres of most industrial settings. My DVA group’s professional facilities, including employee offices and a warehouse, as well as technical and sanitary areas, surround the central showroom. The company’s offices are intentionally located on the outer edges of the interior to receive more natural light during work hours.

The building’s distinctive “black box” entryway and clever incorporation have earned it somewhat of a local buzz. From the outset of this project, one of the architects’ goals was to inspire more dialogue regarding architecture, form, and function. It looks like they’ve succeeded. Thanks to a thrifty fusion of clean aesthetics and free marketing, this furniture showroom now serves the same purpose that its exterior suggests: it displays furniture.
All photos taken by Lukas Pelech.

The post Take a Seat: Czech Designers Make Facade Out of Chairs first appeared on Dornob.

So many of us dream of packing up and moving all of our things into a houseboat, but those dreams often dissolve when we see just how tiny and dark most houseboats are. This one is different, however. It’s called Thesayboat, and it may just change the way we daydream about houseboats.

Thesayboat was designed by Marek Ridky, who says the houseboat’s overall composition was inspired by a quote from Le Corbusier: “Human habitation should be a cell with a view of the stars.”

This modern houseboat most certainly fulfills that ambition. With ample space for two people, the “cell” embraces views of the outdoors from every direction. Half of the top floor consists of a huge bedroom which is entirely surrounded in windows. Gorgeous wooden shutters block out the sun or protect the inhabitants’ privacy.

The other half of the top floor is an enormous rooftop deck with a hot tub. A transparent safety enclosure enhances a feeling of openness on the deck.

This openness is repeated inside, where the staircase leading from the lower floor to the bedroom is also enclosed in a see-through safety barrier. The feeling of airiness is important in such a physically confining space as a houseboat, and the designer captured this feeling perfectly.

Other comforts of home include a surprisingly large bathroom and a small but functional kitchen. We could certainly see spending a few lazy weekends floating on the water and just taking in the sights from this decidedly stylish pontoon-based home.

“Inspiration for Thesayboat, part one: Functionalism. Simple and smart plan, huge windows and many others… On picture Villa of Mac Fric in Prague designed by Ladislav Zak in 30’s years of 20th century. Inspiration for the Thesayboat, part two: Bus. Mostly Skoda RTO. Nice, simple shapes, huge windows. Maybe nobility… This type was produced between 1958 and 1972. Designer of Thesayboat remember when he was very small boy (about 1980), he went by similar younger bus on vacation to grandmother… Way to the great times!”

“Inspiration for the Thesayboat, part three: Pink Floyd. They have great sound. But especially Signs of Life from Momentary Lapse of Reason album has similar atmosphere to feeling from creating TB.”

The post Modern Houseboat is Spacious Indoors and Out first appeared on Dornob.
