Where would it even go, and how do you secure it?

All of these safety, space and fog concerns and more are all addressed simply by building the reflective functionality of a mirror directly into the metal surface of a shower head. The result is a clean, crisp, close-up image of your face for close last-second shaves that skip the sink entirely (without risking sleepy nicks along the way).

Lava Mae Converts Buses into Mobile Showers for Homeless People

In spite of its good intentions, charity can sometimes feel like it’s being put on top of people, forcing them to provide the help that an organization thinks its recipients need.

Lava Mae gets to the heart of important issues, though, providing showers and personal hygiene products to people living on the streets around the world. Dignity and self-worth are the core messages Lava Mae shares as it helps people access these most basic of human needs and comforts.

“Lava Mae brings critical services to the streets, delivered with Radical Hospitality, to restore dignity, rekindle optimism, and fuel a sense of opportunity,” the nonprofit explains on its website. “Our audacious goal is to unleash a Radical Hospitality Revolution around the world.”
CNN Hero Doniece Sandoval started Lava Mae in San Francisco back in 2013. She noticed more and more people sleeping on the streets of San Francisco as the city became an increasingly expensive place to live due to the tech industry boom, which skyrocketed real estate prices and sped up the gentrification process.

CNN reported that Sandoval was shocked when she found that there were less than 20 shower stalls and toilets for the thousands of homeless people in the city. “For the homeless community, it was the equivalent of being in a third-world country,” she told CNN.

The organization converted retired city buses into mobile shower units that could give people easy access to their services, and it also hands out hygiene kits, packs of new underwear, and comfortable pairs of socks.
Now Lava Mae provides outreach in Los Angeles, too, and it’s developed a kit to make it easy for people in other cities and countries to set up their own mobile shower projects for their communities. The “BuildIt” kit provides specifications for building mobile shower trailers and includes talking points to examine before launching a project. Lava Mae even helps connect new service providers with local partners, volunteers, and donors.

“We pilot, test, and refine new programs and share what we’ve learned with the world,” the nonprofit says, adding that it “forges creative partnerships across sectors to radically increase access to services and better meet [its] guests’ needs.”

Human connection and dignity are paramount in all of Lava Mae’s work, and in the list of ways in which people can help, it’s noteworthy that the first suggestion the organization provides is “Acknowledge: Simply making eye contact and even smiling at those you pass on the street is a good first step. It makes a difference when people are seen rather than ignored.”

Other ways that individuals and corporations can help are by donating supplies for hygiene kits like toothbrushes and soap or volunteering at one of Lava Mae’s locations.
In addition to the mobile showers, Lava Mae runs pop-up “care villages” to give homeless people easy access to checkups and treatment from doctors and dentists as well as a good haircut, a clean set of clothes, and the chance to talk with a lawyer if they need legal advice.

Lava Mae has served more than 4,000 individuals, provided 20,000-plus showers on its mobile units, and raised global awareness about the homeless community’s lack of access to basic hygiene.

Sitting right above Malibu’s Carbon Beach, this minimalist bathroom practically floats atop the Pacific Ocean. The little piece of perfection is part of a private and spacious guest room in the luxury hotel Nobu Ryokan. The simplicity of the custom-colored concrete walls and floors place all attention on the stained teak bathtub and exposed shower. The design incorporates clean lines and warm neutral tones to make this bathroom as comfortable as possible using as little as possible.

Above is Rebecca Judd’s Prahran townhouse, as featured on her lifestyle and fashion blog Rebecca Judd Loves. Recently renovated with the help of stylist Aimee Tarulli, the bathroom uses color to acheive Judd’s desire for a softer, more delicate space. The room oozes femininity thanks to a considerable use of blush-pink tiles. The walls are also adorned with large porcelain slates designed to look like marble. Using this method of fabrication, the materials become much more affordable and easier to work with. The bathroom boasts a large standalone tub and a pretty pink shower with tumbled brass tapware.

The Rocksplit Villa is a home designed by Cometa Architects for a private client. It features an extremely minimal bathroom with a whitewashed interior. Other than the necessities of a divider, sink, and toilet, the room is almost completely empty. Much of the room’s volume is occupied by a large, open shower with brushed copper knobs and faucets. The design is heavily influenced by its being located on Greece’s Cyclades island chain, and its makers consider it “another take on traditional and sustainable island architecture.” This bathroom’s simple purity makes it an ultimate safe haven for those who just need the basics but want them in style.

Next we have a bathroom in the home of Bruno Frisoni, who was previously the creative director for the brand Roger Vivier. Frisoni’s many years in the fashion industry helped him develop a style that was both tasteful and whimsical. Located in Tangier, the design is heavily influenced by Moroccan aesthetics. It features bold stone walls and heavy horizontal stripes. In comparison, the floor and countertops are kept light and minimal. The Moroccan motif can also be seen in a few beautifully patterned storage units and decorative antiques.

If the styles above are a bit too plain for you, you’ll love the modern yet eclectic vibe of this bathroom, which was designed by decor-lover and blogger Dabito. Believe it or not, this design was actually inspired by an influential trip Dabito took to Chicago. The focal piece of the room is undoubtedly the shower, whose walls are lined with bold hexagonal tiles. This theme is continued by hexagonal floor tiles, octagonal mirrors, and geometric patterning on the floor mat. To make the most of the room, color has been utilized in the form of a bright teal cabinet and yellow towels. These vibrant hues are contrasted by a muted marble countertop and a plain white shower curtain. Since the bathroom’s completion, Dabito has posted links to the manufacturers of its individual components on his site, just in case you felt like replicating the look in your own home!

Imagine starting your morning shower with just the press of a button, after which the water comes out at exactly the right temperature. Thanks to a smart new shower system, the anxiety we all experience while waiting for our showers to warm up will no longer a part of our rushed morning routines.

Livin was first launched on Kickstarter on January 23rd, 2018. This technologically-advanced shower was created by a small team of designers and engineers in San Fransisco, California. Combining software robotics with modern hardware, Livin provides a holistic shower experience while considering unintuitive temperature controls that would otherwise lead to careless water waste.

Turn on your shower with a voice command or from the accompanying mobile app, and it’ll immediately begin warming up the water for you. The Livin then saves water by auto-pausing the shower stream once the ideal temperature has been acheived. At this point, you will receive a notification to remind you that your shower is ready.

What’s better than a preset temperature? Being able to pause the water mid-shower! Livin further helps reduce unnecessary water flow by allowing you to pause and resume your shower with a single click. All you really have to do is bathe, cleanse, decompress, and have a great experience.

The Livin’s incredible temperature control algorithm works by calculating your shower data in terms of how the temperature is mapped in relation to the opening of the mixer valve. The result is a much faster heating time and about 1,875 gallons of saved water per year for the average household, which is equivalent to some 30,000 glasses of water.

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, we learned that the valve also uses Bluetooth to sync with your music apps and give you total control of your tunes. Connect to Spotify or Apple Music and scroll through your shower playlist in total relaxation. Use the shower controls to play, pause, and skip songs.

Livin’s developers really went above and beyond for their users by coming up with “shower recipes.” These preprogrammed recipes consist of set temperature patterns that are meant to trigger certain responses in the body. For instance, the “wake-up recipe” graudually cools down the water over the course of your shower to leave you feeling alert and more refreshed.

Of course, setting up your shower through Livin’s mobile app isn’t the only way to do things. You can also let your Amazon Echo or Google Home know that you’d like them to prepare your morning shower for you. If you feel like getting extra cozy, you can even let Nest warm the room up for you based on your shower temperature to prevent that awful after-shower chill.

Worried that your spouse or sibling will mess up your preset temperature? Don’t be! Livin takes into account that everyone has different preferences when it comes to showering, which is why it allows every member of the household to create a personalized setting for themselves. You can create up to ten profiles, each one of which can be programmed to remember a person’s ideal shower temperature, favorite music, and most commonly used Bluetooth devices. Each person will then have access to the tracking of their shower temperature, water usage, and the duration of each shower. If a profile is created for an infant, the Livin will recommend a safe water temperature and put a “safety lock” on it to keep it from getting too hot or too cold.

The Livin’s design is definitely a thoughtful one, even when it comes to installation. “You don’t have to tear down walls or call a plumber, just 15 minutes with household tools and you are done,” the team explains. New Capsule Hotel Brings Cheap Micro-Lodging to Italy

When you just need a place to get some sleep and take a shower, paying for a whole hotel room can seem like a waste of both space and money. This is especially true when you’re traveling solo, only have a few hours to sleep, or your design and cleanliness standards render most lower-budget options unworkable. On the other hand, rooms (if you can call them that) at the capsule hotels traditionally found in Japan can be small to the point of absurdity, even coffin-like. However, there’s a balance to be struck between wastefulness and claustrophobia.

That balance is currently on display at Bed and Boarding (nicknamed BenBo) in Naples, Italy. Located in the city’s Capodichino International Airport, this new “fast and cheap” lodging option boasts a set of ultra-compact private rooms that measure just 43 square feet in size. Despite their tiny proportions, these rooms still provide guests with the comfort of being able to stand up and move around. In total, 42 compartments are available at the hotel, which is open for check-in seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

BenBo is the first hotel in Italy that allows travelers to sleep inside of an airport and costs just €25 Euros, or around $28 dollars, for a nine-hour night. Those who require less time can choose to pay €8 for the first hour and €7 for each additional hour. Each capsule includes a bed, luggage stall, television, and fold-down desk surface for eating and working. The TV is conveniently equipped with a special channel for checking flight statuses — a useful feature for anyone with an early departure time.

Guests also have access to some amenities that you’d only expect to find in larger hotels, such as soundproof walls, automatic doors, a shoe rack, a complimentary courtesy kit, free Wi-Fi, and access to a hall full of private bathrooms with showers. The beds are firm and comfortable Brera models, and the pillows were designed to be “highly resistant, long-lasting, anatomically supportive, and crush-proof,” which is more than you can say for most hotel pillows.

The hotel itself is pretty cute, too. The exterior of each pod has been colorfully painted and set inside of a larger space to create an ultramodern look. BenBo is full of plants, flooded with natural daylight from the airport windows just beyond its glass wall, and displays a living citrus tree in its common area, where guests can sit down and work on their laptops or just enjoy a cup of coffee.

All in all, Bed and Boarding offers an incredible deal that can’t be beat in terms of cost-effectiveness. Hourly room rentals are great for travelers who just want to shower or take a nap, especially those on a layover or experiencing unexpected flight delays. Who wants to sleep on an airport floor, anyway? Considering the amount of money they could make, it’s a wonder that more airports don’t already have similar accommodations in place. However, now that BenBo has set an example, perhaps this idea will blossom into an international trend.

Modular and all-in-one bathroom systems are becoming increasingly popular, concentrating most of the required fixtures into a small space so the room feels larger. This concept, the Roundabath by Allegory, is a freestanding unit on a triangular concrete base combining a sink, mirror and shower with organizers for various small items.

That said, the portability of this bottom-up variant – the ViteoShower – makes it a great idea for backyards, decks and other temporary outdoor situations where water (with pressure) is readily available.

The pressure-activated design is easy to setup and attach, and turns on when you step onto the platform – no fuss, no muss, and little by way of moving parts or breakable elements making it a robust design that is simple to deploy.

Ultimately, it may not provide the same full experience as a normal shower, but could be a great way to let people rinse off in partial attire after a beach volleyball game or dip in the ocean.

Shower and Sink with 1 Swiveling Arm

This radical redesign of bathroom water features was thought up by Julia Kononenko. The 2 in 1 system does something that may be entirely new in bathroom design: it combines the shower head and sink faucet into one long, swiveling arm.

In this revolutionary bathroom design, the shower and sink are right next to one another. When you need to use the sink, a long metal arm swivels down to faucet height. When you are showering, the arm swivels back up to shower head height. One fixture, two functions.

As the arm moves between positions, a central switch automatically alters the water flow. When in shower head position, the water comes out like raindrops – but when in sink position, the water is dispensed through a central opening in one strong stream.

The example built by the designer shows just how stylish and visually fascinating this bathroom would be. Of course, we would suggest adding shower doors or at least a curtain to keep the water from splashing everywhere, but the compelling design deserves appreciation for its unique aesthetic and functionality.

Closed-Loop Shower is an Eco-Friendly Washing Alternative

In a standard shower, ten minutes of washing can use around 150 liters (nearly 40 gallons) of water. A closed-loop shower system called OrbSys designed by Mehrdad Mahdjoubi cuts down greatly on water consumption by instantly recycling the shower water. The designer’s goal was to create a shower that would not only help conserve water in the first world, but make the most of scarce water in third-world countries.

The shower works by catching the hot water that falls from the tap into the drain. It is instantly purified to drinking water standards and then recycled through the tap once again. Because the entire process takes such a short amount of time, the water only needs to be minimally reheated. The closed system uses only about five liters (1.3 gallons) of water per 10-minute shower, making it an exceptionally eco-friendly replacement for a standard shower – particularly in areas with water shortages.

Stepping over the side of a bathtub sounds like the easiest thing in the world to someone who has a full range of mobility, but for those with somewhat less flexibility, it can be tricky or even downright dangerous.

Hence the award-winning Elevated Bathtub by Zhang Jiangpeng & Zou Tao, the body of which slides up and out of the way so you can walk right into the center of the bathing area to enjoy a bath.

Alternatively, users can leave the sides up entirely to take a shower, in which case the elevated enclosure serves as a water shield to keep the spray from spreading around the room.

A simple wall-mounted LED display is easy to access from a sitting or standing position for enhanced usability, and utilizes universal symbols to engage different modes and select between temperatures.

The concept is certainly neat, but the question remains: how long does it take to drain? Waiting for a while after you are done with your bath could be a bit of a downer if you are in any kind of a hurry.
