Cities get called “concrete jungles” for good reason, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Introducing a lot more vegetation could dramatically change how cities feel for their residents, their capacity to support wildlife, and their air quality while reducing the urban heat island effect that intensifies hot weather. We’re so used to seeing major metropolises the way they are, it can be hard to imagine what they could be. Luckily, international multidisciplinary design firm WATG has done the work for us, digitally transforming New York, London, and their home city of Honolulu with dramatic “greening” animated GIF images.

It was the early days of the pandemic that inspired the Green Block project. The firm’s designers and architects marveled at how peaceful cities felt as traffic all but disappeared, the skies cleared, and the haze of pollution lifted. Suddenly, city residents were waking up to the sounds of birds and could hear subtle sounds of nature like the rustling of leaves. The firm hopes we won’t forget what that felt like, even as life returns to normal post-COVID. Led by John Goldwyn, WATG’s master planner and landscape architect, Green Block challenged the firm’s designers to use the lessons they learned from the pandemic to imagine a better future.

“Our cities have long been overdue for transformation and, as some people flee for greener landscapes in the wake of COVID-19, Green Block proves that you don’t need to sacrifice one for the other – we actually can, in fact, have both the urban and the green lifestyle,” says Goldwyn.

Green Block isn’t just a series of cool animations, either. It’s an actual solution that can see these transformations realized in the real world. This maintenance-free modular concept consists of 100-percent recyclable living building materials impregnated with native wildflower seeds and an integrated irrigation reservoir. A single module can be used throughout the city in all kinds of applications, including sidewalk mini-parks, ecological corridors, green walls, and more. Essentially, it’s an answer to the question that often comes up when you see architecture concepts full of living vegetation: how will it actually be supported and maintained?

The GIF images show Green Block in action. In New York, the iconic Flatiron district goes from its current overly hardscaped reality to a lush paradise full of vines, trees, vertical greenery, and a grassy pedestrian boulevard. The transformation aims to reduce the impact of cars, provide homes for bees, filter the air, and increase the amount of space residents enjoy for exercise and leisure. Restaurants and retail get new outdoor spaces to grow plants or offer outdoor seating and shopping, and everyone gets an enhanced connection to nature.

In London, we watch as the greenery is literally rolled out like carpets, invigorating virtually every aspect of one of the city’s most traffic-congested streets. Fleet Street comes alive in a whole new way with cycle routes, new walkable vegetated connections to the city’s parks, urban garden allotments, and even camouflage panels for construction sites. “This idea claws back space from the roads and returns it to the people of London,” Goldwyn explains.

In Honolulu, WATG pays homage to its origins as a pioneer of hospitality design with a vision of what’s possible for the tourist-laden Kalakaua Avenue on the Diamond Head side of Waikiki. The palm trees already present along the avenue are augmented by flowering native species, larger grassy areas to lounge and picnic on, and luxuriant plant life spilling over the balconies of neighboring high-rise hotels.

Goldwyn adds that “on a global level, the goal of Green Block is to facilitate and encourage further discussions around sustainable living, and how that can be incrementally and practically achieved in urban areas. This project reinforces WATG’s founding principles: designing resilient destinations and spaces where people thrive, using sustainable and resilient materials and techniques, championing and preserving the environments and communities that we touch, and delivering exceptional design solutions.”

The post Guerrilla Greening: GIFs Present Lushly Vegetated Visions of Major Cities first appeared on Dornob.

Poking out of a vast bamboo forest is a golden structure that looks like it was woven by birds or small woodland creatures. Organic in shape, its form billows above the ground, creating a protected space beneath it. Located in the Karst Mountains of Yangshuo County in southern China, this pavilion leads visitors on an immersive journey to “Impression Sanjie Liu,” a theatrical performance staged on a small island of the Li River.

Appropriately named “Bamboo Bamboo,” the pavilion is made of the same materials by which it’s surrounded. Architecture firm LLLab has succeeded in creating a sensory experience that elicits a sense of anticipation — a sort of pre-performance meditation as guests make their way to the outdoor theater.

The pavilion offers a place to retreat from the sun and frequent rains, stretching out a full 140 meters (459 feet) along the river. Lanterns set at various intervals create a soft, warm glow after dark, and in some areas, cutouts in the roof allow living bamboo to grow unencumbered. Amazingly, this canopy was hand-woven by local craftspeople using a technique that eliminates the need for any glue or nails. The result is remarkably nest-like, with support pillars hidden behind the woven surfaces.

The further visitors travel into the pavilion, the larger the lanterns become, until you’re eventually able to walk right inside them. In the daylight, they appear solid, but at night, they diffuse the light, creating patterns and shadows that add to the drama of the setting.

The firm explains that “currently, the night show entertains guests in two areas, one at either end of the island site. The entry and pagoda where guests arrive, and the main stage, perched at the bank of the Li river at the other end. Between these two points, little interaction takes place. It is here in this middle ground that two new assemblies of architecture are introduced. The first, woven bamboo lantern structures, scattered where guests circulate, whose purpose is to guide and intrigue. Then the other, a stretch of woven canopy amongst clusters of bamboo, providing an area to walk sheltered from regular rainfall. In these, the architecture relies on bamboo not only for its composition but also for its constant referral to parts that constitute the place.”

“In acknowledgment of the theatrical spirit of the Impression Sanjie Liu, moments of performance make its way into many parts of the design: the hand weaving and bamboo playing off the tension of one another. The topography of the canopy ceiling dancing between columns of bamboo as if unsupported. Even the way guests are intended to move from lantern to lantern, in a narrative of interaction. Together these subtle hints encourage a particular frame of mind, readying the guest for the main feature.”

“Impression Sanjie Liu” makes the landscape its backdrop. In fact, this site is considered the world’s largest natural theater, using the waters of the Li River as its stage and the mist-shrouded hills and sky as set dressings. Rain, moonlight, and all the reflections seen in the water play a role in the performance, while the audience stands on viewing terraces. Sound equipment is hidden among the bamboo groves, so it feels like the performance is occurring spontaneously, naturally amplified.

The post Nest-Like Woven Pavilion Built Around Living Bamboo first appeared on Dornob.

Want to leave the Earth a little better when you die? A Dutch company has crafted a unique coffin for just that purpose. Composed of live mushroom fibers, it enables dead bodies to “enrich and clean the soil with their own nutrients.”

Biotech firm Loop is concerned that today’s corpse disposal techniques have been working against nature for too long, polluting air, water, and natural biodiversity along the way. “Contrary to nature’s beautiful end-of-life cycle, people are not only parasitizing during life, but even after death they leave a scar on this beautiful planet,” the company website says. “Thanks to our modern lifestyle, the average human body contains 219 chemicals that can endanger ecosystems.”

A customary burial today includes embalming fluid, which leaks noxious compounds into the ground — not to mention the fact that conventional caskets alone use up an incredible amount of resources. The Berkeley Planning Journal estimates that the amount of wood used for coffins in the US every year tears down 4 million acres of forest and could be used to create 4.5 million homes. Cremation isn’t much better, either, as it sends carbon monoxide, fine soot, sulfur dioxide, and heavy metals into the atmosphere.

“It’s as if we see ourselves as waste, while we can be a valuable part of nature,” says Loop founder Bob Hendrikx, who first got the idea for a greener burial while showcasing his living home concept at the 2019 Dutch Design Week. If an organic material could house the living, he wondered, why couldn’t it encase the dead as well?

From those musings was born the company’s eco-friendly “Living Cocoon.” Working with the Delft University of Technology and the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Loop has constructed these caskets from mycelium, an “underground fungal network [that connects] the roots of plants to form ‘Nature’s Internet.’” In other words, the coffin recycles organic matter into essential elements for new plant life. The bottom is even lined with a mossy bed, and the entire space is inhabited by helpful bacteria colonies.

The caskets are lab-grown in one week by combining mycelium with an organic wood chip substrate. The mycelium then eats through the substrate, growing to fill a coffin-shaped mold. It’s a method that’s especially easy on the environment, as it requires no outside heat, light, or energy. When all’s said and done, the case goes through a drying process, after which it’s strong enough to hold up to 440 pounds.

Loop asserts that the Living Cocoon will biodegrade within 45 days, with bodies being fully composted in three years. In a traditional coffin, the process would take 10 to 20 years.

“When the Living Cocoon is in the ground you can even water it, add seeds, and decide what tree you want to become,” says Hendrikx.

Not only can humans be turned into compost faster with these mushroom-based boxes, but they can also help purify the ground where they are interred, since mycelium is an excellent destroyer of toxins. “It’s used in Chernobyl to clean up the soil there from the nuclear disaster,” Hendrikx notes, adding that “the same thing happens in our burial places, because the soil is super polluted there and mycelium really likes metals, oils, and microplastics.”

Hendrikx and his Loop team would love to see their Living Cocoon be a means of decontamination all over the planet. “We have a dream of having super-new natural funeral-based concepts in which we go to different cities and search for the dirtiest soil and start cleaning that up,” he says.

Loop’s living coffins are available for purchase in the Netherlands for around 1,500 euros each. The company has sold 10 to date, with one already having been used for an interment in the Hague.

The post Loop’s “Living Cocoon” Coffins Make Death Eco-Friendly first appeared on Dornob.

It started with a single shack on a remote plot of rural farmland. This one-off project turned out to be the prototype for a larger-scale venture – a modular housing system celebrating the bare-bones simplicity loft living in a natural setting.

The award-winning Shack at Hinkle Farm was designed to be as basic as possible – it was ultimately built by friends of the family, not a professional construction crew.

A vacation home for architect Jeffrey Broadhurst, the Shack is “simplicity embodied,” perched on a 27-acre mountaintop property in West Virginia. It can only be reached on foot or by off-road vehicle, and there’s no electricity – but the views are incredible.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lL0gavxH_-g

In turn, The Crib evolved to be a flexible solution for similar site conditions with different elemental variables – the elevation, for instance, lending itself to flood-friendliness.

“This prototype building is made with sustainable and recyclable materials that can be fabricated off site then transported and quickly assembled where desired. The Crib, takes its basic form from traditional American corn cribs, which were common farm buildings that served to store and dry corn. However, here the form is realized as a more sophisticated kit of parts. The simple but exceptionally sturdy structural concept allows considerable flexibility in the length of the building and degree and type of outfitting.”

It is essentially a traditionally-made, wood-frame structure that sits up on stilts with walls on three sides and a glass-and-metal garage door facing down the hill, looking out over the landscape.

The evolved version, however, comes with a variety of optional additions, such as a first-floor brick facade, additional shading and fenestration options and so forth. A wood-burning stove, small kitchen, space to sleep and area to sit out on the deck make this a modest residence for full-time purposes but a great little vacation retreat.

If you walk around Todoroki, you would notice how hilly this district is. No wonder, you then come across a ‘canyon’ at the heart of the residences – Todoroki Keikoku, the only gorge existing in Tokyo. The repeating ups and downs in the area are actually a part of the topography from the Ice Age – a dynamic environment created in some 10,000 years of time.”
“In order to preserve this rich nature surrounding the canyon, regulations for this area prescribe a setback (receding of the wall) from the border of the site and greening of the outside space. By taking advantage of these rules, the residential area can generate a ‘green ring in sequence,’ where green circles continue to develop. We approached with a broad concept for the house – the design wouldn’t complete just within the site but could also offer a sense of “movement” and “series of green rings” – which you would find throughout the entire landscape of Todoroki.”

The post Modern Wood & Glass House in Japan first appeared on Dornob.

Imagine a present where buildings work like trees, with living walls that perpetually cleaned the air across our cities. The idea seems laudable, because if buildings currently contribute to 39 percent of carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S., then retrofitting their facades with photobioreactors that can clean the air would certainly help solve the problem. This is where we are today: using biological intelligence to fix our mistakes from the past (and present) and work towards a cleaner, more resilient future.

In 2018, an installation called Photo.Synth.Etica was exhibited in Dublin, Ireland on the principal facade of Dublin Castle’s Printworks building. It was created by London-based architecture and urban design firm ecoLogicStudio in collaboration with Climate-KIC, a European initiative set on expediting climate change-resilient design. Every day, the living wall captured 2.2 pounds of carbon dioxide and stored it in cells, effectively doing the work of 20 trees. Comprised of 16 photobioreactor modules, the installation uses daylight to cultivate microorganisms that trap passing carbon dioxide molecules. The reactors themselves then turn the pollutants into oxygen. And that’s just one of ecoLogicStudio’s many innovations.
The concept of using technology to perform the same work as a tree is something that feels both exciting and defeatist. While the science behind it is certainly impressive, biological intelligence like Photo.Synth.Etica can also be viewed as overt evidence of our own desperation and inability to protect our environment.
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-63479" src="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Image2_Photo.Synth_.Etica_Photo-by-NAARO_Source-urbannext.net_.jpg" alt=""Photo.Synth.Etica," a living wall (biological intelligence) that traps CO2 and cleans the air. We arrived here not because the climate is rapidly becoming uninhabitable, but because too many of us value our personal conveniences over the planet’s well-being. We live as though the Earth is a lightbulb, soon to be spent until a dutiful servant replaces it with a new one.
We always have reasons why we cannot take the necessary measures to protect our future from climate calamity. We would rather settle for quarter measures or piecemeal changes so as to disturb as little of the status quo as possible. Designers and inventors provide solutions and get paid regardless of whether they actually work or not. If we saw the amount of time, energy, money, and hope that have been wasted greenwashing our way to sustainability, we would be ashamed of ourselves. As the science rings true in our daily forecasts and we continue to experience climatic shifts that the world has not seen in more than a century, we must do better to do more. Seriously this time.
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-63480" src="https://dornob.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Image3_Photo.Synth_.Etica_Photo-by-NAARO_Source-urbannext.net_.jpg" alt=""Photo.Synth.Etica," a living wall (biological intelligence) that traps CO2 and cleans the air. If biological intelligence is an effective solution at our disposal, then we should absolutely invest in more of it. Still, Photo.Synth.Etica is ultimately a solution born from our past failures. Facing the realities of what’s predicted to come in desperation may be inspirational because of new technologies, but it will not be fun.

The post Photo.Synth.Etica: The Living Wall That Fights Climate Change first appeared on Dornob.

Jewelry is just one of the many things we use to express ourselves. From our clothes to our hair to our makeup, how we choose to present ourselves says a lot about who we are. Now, a new line of “living jewelry” developed by engineers at MIT and Stanford in the MIT Media Lab is taking self-expression to a whole new level. The collection actually started life as a group of miniature robots, but they were eventually given a newfound purpose in Project Kino, which “enables multiple presentations of self” by “changing location and reconfiguring appearance according to social context.” That definitely doesn’t sound like any other jewelry out there at the moment.

Project Kino’s living jewelry is made possible by a function that’s been present in the robots since they were first developed: the ability to move across static clothing via the use of magnets. To transform them into jewelry, the robots’ designers simply covered them in a stylish fabric that could be shaped and changed out as desired, making them versatile enough to use with a number of different garments. The material over which the robots crawl is sandwiched between the two magnets and boasts an eye-catching sheath on its outer surface. The design team says that Project Kino, “explores a dynamic future in which the accessories we wear are no longer static, but are instead mobile, living objects on the body.” The jewelry is a tech-savvy approach to accessorizing and offers its wearer several innovative options in terms of both aesthetic and functionality.

Additionally, Project Kino has the potential to act as a kind of climate control. The wearable robots can be attached to the drawstrings of a jacket and pull the hood up as soon as rain starts to fall. In another example outlined by MIT, a microphone could be inserted into the jewelry, effectively turning it into a voice-activated recording device. For the purposes of adornment, multiple living jewels can be worn at once and reconfigured on the wearer to create different types of jewelry: arrange the bots in cluster patterns to create a feature brooch, or position them in a ring around your neck as a statement necklace. If you wear certain materials, such as velvet, the robot’s movements can even create patterns on the fabric itself, transforming the garment into a work of art-in-progress. If you cover the robots in an eye-catching, geometric material that matches the shirt you’re wearing, their path can create an optical illusion as the two patterns cross each other.

Although the robots are currently quite large, their designers hope that they’ll be slimmed down as their concept and materiality are refined. Once they’re small enough, the developers explain, “With the addition of kinetic capabilities, traditionally static jewelry and accessories will start displaying life-like qualities, learning, shifting, and reconfiguring to the needs and preferences of the wearer, also assisting in fluid presentation of self. With wearables that possess hybrid qualities of the living and the crafted, we explore a new on-body ecology for human-wearable symbiosis.” However, when new products like these hit the market, it can never really be predicted where they will end up and how they will be used. Nonetheless, the possibilities for Project Kino are definitely endless!

The post Project Kino: High-Tech Living Jewelry first appeared on Dornob.

Fungus sounds like the last thing you’d want growing on buildings. In fact, when the word “fungus,” is mentioned in the same breath as “buildings,” most of us immediately think of toxic mold growth, which can rapidly ruin entire structures and harm their inhabitants. But there’s quite literally a whole world of fungus out there — up to 3.8 million species — and some varieties have an array of beneficial qualities to offer, including the ability to absorb water, resist flames, and even form masses so solid they’re stronger than concrete. All of these things make mycelium (the root-like vegetative part of a fungal colony, usually hidden beneath the soil) the ideal sustainable building material.

Mycologists have transformed fungi into 100-percent organic and compostable bricks, and a company called Ecovative Design has mixed mycelium with agricultural waste to create a natural alternative to polystyrene and plastic packaging. Now, a group of Indian and Italian architects is demonstrating how mycelium can quickly fill in substrate within a wooden framework to create lightweight, recyclable structures perfect for short-term use as disaster shelters and temporary venues for public events.

Indian architecture studio Beetles 3.3 has collaborated with Yassin Arredia Design to create “Shell Mycelium,” an installation in a Fort Kochi courtyard in the Indian state of Kerala. For this project, mycelium spores were implanted into coir pith, and after a few days of tending, they bloomed into a snowy white covering.

“In an era of concrete jungles and overcrowded cities, degradability, sustainability, and liability become parts of the responsibility of architecture,” explains YAD. “It is an innovation in the field of biology and architecture, a concept that stresses the need for temporariness. Mycelium is the vegetative part of a fungus like mushrooms and it is being touted for the first time in India, as a possible building block.”

The YAD website reads: “The Shell Mycelium installation at the MAP Project space at the Dutch Warehouse as a Kochi Muziris Biennale Collateral, was the work of Kochi based architect Asif Rahman of Beetles 3.3 (B3.3), Italian architect Giombattista Arredia and Lebanese architect Mohammed Yassin of Yassin Arredia Design (YAD). The team met at Barcelona at the IAAC masters program and were introduced to Mycotecture by inventor-artist Philip Ross, who has been studying mushrooms with fast growing mycelia as a building material. The three architects were fascinated by this concept as they had been discussing the nature of building and humans. Are these concrete buildings we build actually a sign of progress? Is this really development? Is this the future?”

The designers go on to point out that many buildings we erect for temporary purposes like the World Cup and the Olympic Games are incredibly resource-intensive and quickly abandoned. They note that “many of the structures are erected as a sign of the prosperity and strength of a nation’s economy and the cities unconsciously pay the price. At the end of the event, after the entire world has danced and celebrated, the city remains a scarred body, devoid of life.”

The answer, then, potentially lies in making use of the opposite: living, breathing materials that not only provide us with the shelter we need for such events, but that also exist in harmony with nature and can be returned to the earth when their stated purpose is finished. This gives the building a more natural life cycle similar to that of a living organism. In fact, these pavilions are designed to begin dying right before visitors’ eyes as the top layer of mycelium planted in the coir pith is exposed to sunlight.

The architects wanted this life and death cycle to be visible and accelerated in order to question the status quo and open the door to newer, more sustainable possibilities. Of course, not all mycelium building blocks are born to die. Instead of degrading, some types of mycelium grow stronger after they die, acting as a sort of natural glue, while others can be tended and kept alive. That’s a whole lot of potential hiding right under our noses, and it’ll be interesting to see how these fungal innovations continue to evolve.

The post Is Fungus the Building Material of the Future?

What Inspired this Concept?

In January 2017, a Reigate, Surrey, tea room extension was completed in the back of a couple’s house as a retirement gift from the husband to his wife. The couple wanted a place to sit and enjoy the views of their garden and the outdoor world while they sipped on their tea in the mornings. Pitched roofs and bi-fold doors were prominent in their vision for the extension, but after mulling over several design concepts, Vita Architecture came up with a proposal that would ultimately give the couple a balcony and a conservatory without taking up twice the space.

What Did the Project Entail?

This new idea doubled the amount of new room the couple would be getting and offered them the desired picturesque views of their backyard while also giving them the option to sit out in the sun (or take shelter from that unpredictable British weather on the cooler days). The bi-fold doors were replaced with a fully glazed sliding door, whose 18-millimeter frames allow the maximum amount of daylight to flood into the room. The result is a stunning and sleek glass and aluminum-clad extension that boasts a lot of space and a modern aesthetic.

Of course, when it comes to construction, planning permission is required to make any physical alterations to a property. Thanks to a handful of pre-application meetings and a carefully detailed design, Vita Architecture was successful in their proposal. To ensure a minimal impact on the neighbors’ privacy, the team fitted the balcony with a privacy screen to deter people from looking over into their gardens.

Some key statistics include the firm’s doubling of the floor area from 22 to 44 square meters, allotting the balcony a comfortable amount of walking and lounging space. The extension’s south and east-facing facades were achieved by installing “super insulating” floors, roofs, and walls into an existing loft. This expansion also increased the home’s list price by a generous 32 percent, which made for two very overjoyed clients.

Who is Behind this Masterful Work of Architecture?

The wallpaper line features a series of non-repeating patterns with various shapes and colors. They all go well together, but they aren’t predictable or arranged in a traditional manner. The two collections, Pink and Blue, each have their own patchwork parts that fit together into strangely pleasing strips of colors.

The diagram above shows how a roll of Cut & Paste wallpaper is put up on a wall. Because the patterns are non-repeating, there is no need to line up patterns from one strip to the next. You just hang the strips up side by side and the complementary patterns make for a crazily awesome patchwork effect on your wall.

The semi-random colorful patterns might drive some people crazy, but if you’re interested in a completely unique wall covering, the Cut & Paste collection is a cute and fun way to personalize your home’s interior.

“Cut & Paste is a 10 meter roll printed on high quality non-woven wallpaper. This wallpaper has no repeat: rather than usual wallpaper that has a repeat and has to be matched and aligned, the idea behind Cut & Paste paper is the opposite. The collection of colours and patterns has been carefully designed to compliment each other without the need for matching. Just cut the paper to the length you need and paste it to the wall, with no matching or waste.”

“We started working together back in 2013, both living in London and working in Interior Design. The city gave us opportunities to start collaborating on a few Decoration and Interior Design projects and luckily we were given blank canvases to work on. This allowed us to fully merge our experience in Interior Design with the more playful world of Illustration. We received a very positive response from these first interior projects, and our design studio All The Fruits was born! Within All The Fruits we combine our passion for colour and form, and apply it to the world of interior design, decoration, product and textile. “

“As a studio, we’d love our work to have a positive impact on the chosen space. We aim to push the boundaries past what is considered safe and normal, and implement a change to the surroundings through our artwork.
Quality is of the upmost importance, both in the design process and also in manufacture, and wherever possible we promote local materials and techniques. “

The post Random Patterns Make Fascinating, Unique Wallpaper first appeared on Dornob.

Some of the structures, like the scratching post, ramps and walls are explicitly cat features – in other instances, cat-friendly sofas and other feline favorites, like laptops, simply make their way into the picture.

But even without the cat involved, the design stands on its own as well – so while a later buyer might be puzzled by the ramping bookshelves, they are also aesthetically interesting enough to work, even without a furry friend playing on them. That, or perhaps a ferret, chinchilla or rat would find them fun as well.

Hey!Cheese Photography did a great job of capturing the coolness of the space, but the creators of this lovely contemporary feline-focused home are actually Thinking Design, a firm based in Taiwan – and of course they should get credit for their great work! This cat friendly house is inspiration for pet lovers all over the world to create their own elevated walkways that blend right in to the sleek interior design.

Featuring over 200 musicians through a combination of iconography and typography, this wrap-around work of custom wallpaper manages to be dazzlingly complex and surprisingly cohesive at the same time. Commissioned by musician Olly Murs, graphic designer and illustrator Alex Fowkes documented the process of this typographic mural redesign with over 60,000 time-lapse photographs of his progress.

Artists featured range from James Brown and Michael Jackson to Kanye West and Justin Bieber, a visual tour de force timeline documenting the evolution of music over recent decades.

A few pieces of furniture, fixtures and built-ins were selected to match the colors and fit into the composition of the surrounding lettering and logos, aesthetically subservient to the wall surfaces.

The layout had to be carefully planned to seem seamless against its white backdrop, even as it wraps between walls and flows up to the angled ceiling. This same designer previously created a timeline for a Sony office along similar lines, which brought him to the attention of this new client.

About Alex Fowkes

“Born in the U.K and currently having completed projects across Europe, North America and Asia, Alex is no stranger to travel and working; Believing that experimentation and play are essential parts of the design process. He enjoys responding to physical environments with typography and graphic artwork with a belief that “on surface artwork commands attention like no other”.

“Not only competent in murals and installations Alex works with logo branding, packaging, advertising, illustration, infographics and most other arms of graphic design. Being a “visual problem solver at the source allows you to tackle any design brief. Alex has been fortunate enough to author two books on typography with Rockport Publishing ‘Drawing Type’ and ‘Expressive Type’. He has created mammoth typographic installations and murals, crafted international advertising campaigns and collaborated with some of the best creative studios out there.”

The post Typographic Mural for an Awesome Music Room first appeared on Dornob.

Steve Sauer has had to be inventive over the course of this decade-long incremental remodel, hiding a bathtub, for instance, below the floor.
“IN 2003, STEVE SAUER, an airplane interiors engineer, purchased a century-old basement storage space in Queen Anne. Seven years later, he’s created an intimate party spot and work den that soon, if he can sort out the zoning legalities, will be his home. The tight quarters here are just right for Sauer’s little-big thinking: When space is at a premium, every detail must be function-forward. Sauer, who holds a degree in whole systems design from Antioch University, aspires to one day outfit an entire building with these meticulously crafted mini pads. Making such a tight spot work, he says, is about “simplifying the right things, making everything better quality and better designed and more intentional.”

Studio Eric Klarenbeek (‘designer of the unusual’) produced the Mycelium Chair, which uses straw as a 3d-printed growth medium and bio-plastic to contain the shape while mycelium fills out the form and provides the structural strength for the seat.

Klarenbeek worked with specialists at the University of Wageningen on this project. The mushrooms sprouting out from it are a secondary effect, a sort of accidental decor growing out from the main structure and a way to tell the story of its production.

“Designer Eric Klarenbeek interest is combining materials in unexpected ways. Klarenbeek is exploring ways of making 3D prints of living organisms, such as mycelium, the threadlike network in fungi. He uses experimental raw materials for printing material: organic substrate for mushroom growing and bioplastics.”

“Working with scientists, Klarenbeek has printed a chair from straw, with a thin coating of bioplastic. Once it is mature it should be strong enough to support a person. The chair is a metaphor for what can be achieved with materials and production methods. “

“Studio Klarenbeek & Dros are the first in the world who have 3D-printed living mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms. A technology we are developing since 2011. Combining the threadlike network of fungi with local raw materials, enables us to create products with a negative carbon footprint. “

“Using this infinite natural source as a living glue for binding organic waste. Once it’s full-grown and dried, it turns into a structural, stable and renewable material, comparable to cork or wood. “

“The plant material produces oxygen during its life cycle, and our production process eliminates the necessity of heating materials in the printing process, thus reducing the use of energy. Adding up those two facts, combined with the use of local resources and production, it becomes possible to create products with a negative ‘carbon footprint’. Instead of wasting less, we strive to absorb emission. After use, the product is fully compostable, and can be disposed without harming the environment. On the contrary, it will fertilize our surroundings! “

The post Fungus Chair Grows on 3D-Printed Mould first appeared on Dornob.
