Displaying trophies of taxidermied animal heads on your wall is passé – and pretty gross. Designer Andreas Scheiger has completely transformed the idea of wall trophies with his series of functional bike part wall hangings. Using old bike saddles and handlebars, he creates a fun but useful piece of art that bears a striking resemblance (shape-wise, anyway) to the far less friendly traditional wall trophy.

Each faux taxidermy “head” consists of a bike seat with handlebars mounted just above that, both on a wooden plaque. No two are alike as the designer uses found parts to make each trophy unique. From parts that look almost new with their funky colors and patterns to the grizzled, falling-apart, well-loved pieces, each wall art item easily reflects the personality of its owner.

The series, called Upcycle Fetish, also has a practical purpose as hanging storage. The handlebars on each piece hold everything from bikes to hats to umbrellas – whatever you need to keep up and off of the ground. Seeing the “trophies” in use makes them even more appealing since they are not only cruelty-free, but upcycled and useful. It makes for the perfect combination and a rather rad line of products.

“Drawing and painting, handicraft working and sculpting always has been his passion. Already in his early years his teachers asked him to illustrate the school´s newspaper. Later he was the leading illustrator of Austria´s biggest students´magazine, which in turn led to various assignments. Andreas Scheiger cultivated his technical skills when he worked as a graphic designer and later as an art director in advertising. Inspired by pop art, bauhaus and modernism and the inherent idea of combining graphic design with free art, he passionately experiments with materials and styles. In all his works he aspires to create a visual impact by simplifying a complex concept.”

“Andreas Scheiger´s primary works celebrate the craft of etching, engraving and letter design with a nod to both science and the graphic design of the Victorian era. The work of his “Graphic Laboratory” is surreal and yet steeped in craftmanship, rendered with the same care Victorian scientists once lavished on their instruments and instrument boxes. His ongoing project “Evolution of Type” is inspired by The Alphabet and Elements of Lettering, a book by the pioneering and vastly prolific American type designer Frederic W. Goudy. Goudy laid great stress on the revolutionary impact of the alphabetic system of writing. He believed that letters were themselves a record of man’s history and development, and that each possessed an essential and organic form. Inspired by these ideas, Andreas Scheiger has created typographic sculptures and instructional posters: letters preserved in amber like prehistoric insects, suspended in specimen tanks like budding embryos, or with their casings incised and retracted. Andreas Scheiger interpretes letters as organisms and typefaces as species, all classified similar to biological taxonomy. Each letter displays the anatomical features and evolutionary characteristics shared by so many living creatures.”

What do a laundry bag, basket, bar, rack and hamper have in common? They are all clothes storage systems and drying solutions take up space – and tend to look rather out of place inside of a room. It is no wonder so many of us give up and simply turn our furniture into an ersatz dryer.

First, this system solves the classic problem of having a single object somewhere in your small space (such as fold-out rack that needs area on all sides) since each of these wall-leaning hangers can be placed against any spare surface.

Second, though the solution is more dispersed than a solitary unit would be it is just as collapsible as the alternatives – when not in use, you can simple stack and store these sorter hangers out of the way somewhere (or treat them as abstract modern decor!).

Finally, Stephanie Estoppey, the designer of these clever laundry hanging system, illustrates how they can animate a space. Suddenly, instead of laundry laying out and looking like an eyesore it becomes part of the aesthetic of an interior – almost like decorating the room (though it may perhaps be a good idea to skip this step with your more private undergarments).

Floating on an actual cloud might theoretically offer the best sleep any of us have ever had, but in the real world, a floating mattress that can be installed literally anywhere you imagine will do nicely. The round ‘Floating Bed’ system melds traditional frame-supported mattresses with hammocks to create some of the dreamiest sleep scenarios this side of the sound barrier, and the photos will have you drifting off to daydreams about suspending them over swimming pools, hanging them from trees and creating swanky festival setups. Available in indoor and outdoor versions, the bed can be an art piece, an instant party and a natural gathering place for friends.

It can be suspended from anything that the top ring can be attached to, including ceiling beams, gazebos, tree limbs, overhangs or specially made stands that are available for purchase separately. Those options include a heavy-duty commercial aluminum stand and a lightweight telescoping aluminum stand, the latter of which is portable and can fit in a standard car, collapsing to less than 8 feet in length. Combine it with the company’s mosquito net and tent cover, and you’ve got a waterproof floating tent resembling a hanging teepee.

The Floating Bed comes in four sizes: youth (6 feet in diameter), double (6’6”), queen (7’4”) and king (8 feet). The hoops have two hinged joints and four insert joints for easy assembly, disassembly and transport, and hoop finish options include stainless steel for a modern look or a cushioned, fabric-covered perimeter wrap.

The right motion makes all the difference for high quality sleep, says the company, noting that rocking is a proven, natural sleep aid. “It is the same safe motion that we felt, gently floating in our mother’s womb. Nature selected this motion for its calming effect. It has positive effects on the limbic, circulatory, and other systems. It activates a deep, powerful relaxation response. Mothers intuitively rock babies from head to toe, using that same floating motion. Every mother knows that rocking is good for a baby. But science has found that motion is good for adults too.”

The resemblance goes more than skin deep, with a woven wood-like structure that parallels the way in which nests are built in nature. ?The result is a semi-enclosed, seclusion-granting space to relax that nonetheless breathes (though, to do so, sacrifices potential rain protection).

Almost as neat as the organic design by Dedon itself are the suggested implementations. Some are a bit fanciful, but others seem realistic assuming you have access to a large and sturdy tree. Not that you necessarily have to hang it, but it clearly is much more successful as a suspended?structure.

Finally, the main frames come in a few colors including white and a more natural-looking brown, while the cushions are available in a variety of patterns, textures and materials including acrylic, leather and polyester … how these will weather the outdoors, though, is another question.

Clamber on top of the kitchen volume to take a seat at this suspended dining table, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the living room. Bach Architects dealt with the limited space in a 753-square-foot Barcelona apartment with a creative layout that maintains a visual connection between the living area and the back bedrooms, making use of vertical space with a mezzanine level.

A Fun Way to Save Space

The architects eliminated a series of corridors and closed-off rooms in the main living space, inserting a low-ceilinged kitchen volume that functions like a piece of furniture. Ladder rungs offer access to the platform, enabling guests to dangle their legs off the edge while working or eating at the hanging table.

Knocking out walls definitely brightened up the formerly dark interiors, and painting the walls and ceiling while while leaving the original wood beams and trim intact helps the space feel even more airy and spacious. A little pass-through window lets whoever’s cooking in the kitchen talk to guests lounging in the living room and serve them coffee or plates, and creates extra counter space.

“The project consists of a full refurbishment of an apartment in the Eixample district in Barcelona, ​​in a traditional building block from the early twentieth century. The apartment, of about approximately 70 m2, originally had two rooms facing the façade, while the rest of the rooms were lit and ventilated via a wide inner patio. This arrangement generated a series of corridors and dark spaces that had little other function than connecting spaces.”

“The new configuration was conditioned by the customers’ wish to keep the two rooms at the façade as bedrooms, whilst a new living room, dining, kitchen and a study space would be organized in the rest of the house. Too many functions for such a short façade to the inner patio. The solution we adopted retains the two bedrooms and creates an open space which accommodates all the functions. The generous height of the house allowed us to design the kitchen, almost like piece of furniture, in the back of the open space, generating a loft, the top which can be used as a study, or a guest room.”

“This solution had the advantage of allowing full use of the exceptional height of the apartment and providing the generous central space, which gives access to all the other rooms. The distinct kitchen resembling a piece of furniture, and the fact that it does not use all the height further emphasizes the idea of ​​a large open central space. This very clear outline is adapted to the irregular boundaries of the apartment with the bathrooms and services.”

“The original small toilet space in front of the entrance is kept, and, again, making use of the height, we modified the bathroom near the master bedroom. An elevated bathroom floor permits a storage space underneath. Additional space is gained by locating the bathtub under the shower, combining both functions in one space.”

Changing up the wall adornments in a room can change the space’s whole feel and almost trick you into thinking you’ve done some major remodeling project. This type of change-up can result in some gnarly holes in your walls, though. The wall becomes a kind of canvas to support your every decorating whim. You can change the look of your room as simply as putting up a magnet or taking it down.

Even heavy objects like bikes or televisions can be hung up using the Magnektik system. Whatever you hang up stays put securely, but the modules are simple enough to remove and replace. This system could change the way rental properties are managed; by eliminating the need for nails and screws, renters can express their personalities and landlords can reduce the cost of making the property rentable for the next tenant.

There aren’t many coat/hat/handbag storage solutions that could be called artistic or even attractive, but this one is both. The wall-mounted storage solution called LINE was designed by Apartment 8 for home interiors firm Schönbuch. It isn’t just a cool coat rack; it’s a wall decoration.

As its name suggests, LINE is a collection of vertical bars meant to hold the things that you would otherwise just drop on the floor when you get home. When not in use, they look a lot like modern wall art.

At the top of each bar, a small fold-down arm gives you a place to hang your coat or dry cleaning. Three pegs line the lower section or the bars, providing handy resting places for hats and handbags.

The slimline design is far less intrusive in any setting than a traditional coat rack or even hooks on the wall. LINE comes in 27 matte colors and 17 high-gloss colors, so they can fit into and enhance any home with their modern art-like appeal.

These suspended wire baskets hold orbs of light that illuminate spaces in a modern and clean way without looking cluttered. From designer Martín Azúa, the Light Container pendant lamp cradles a light bulb, making it seem like equal parts art and home object.

The wire baskets are suspended from the ceiling by invisible wires, while the bulbs are at the end of long black cords. This gives the illusion that the baskets are held up by the twisting, curving black cords.

Each basket is tilted so that the ball-shaped light source doesn’t roll out. The slightly angled position is reminiscent of hanging sculptures, while the glass light diffuser around the bulb creates a soft, glowing light.

The artistic light fixtures are made in three sizes, letting you create your own personalized art installation in your dining room, living room, stairwell, or business.. The series is limited to 5000 signed units, available at the designer’s site beginning at 380€.

Putting a hanging lamp somewhere in your house always presents a dilemma: how to hide the power cord. Designer Michael Anastassiades brings the power cord out into the open in his series String Lights for Italian lighting brand Flos.

Rather than trying to blend the cords in with the walls to make them fade into the background, Anastassiades turns them into part of the design. They create volumes and shapes in the air, drawing unique geometric visions against the walls and ceilings.

Seen from a certain angle, the cord and LED light arrangements look like simple pencil drawings on a white background. It is this simplicity which makes the cord arrangements so compelling: the cords are always there, but it look a different point of view to make them stand out.

Inspiration behind the design

“Every time I take the train, I sit by the window and watch the series of perfectly parallel strings connecting the pylons, as we move at high speed,” explains designer Michael Anastassiades. “I love the way they divide the landscape and how spheres are occasionally beaded through the wires at random intervals. I also love how, in Mediterranean cultures, strings of lights are stretched between posts to mark an outdoor space for an evening party in a village square. And finally, I love how human ingenuity works around problems created by everyday things in the house (like switches and power points) that others have chosen to position where we don’t want them.”

These chairs aren’t made for sitting – they’re made for hanging your keys, coats and handbags. Industrial designer Nikos Tsoumanis creates an odd optical illusion with chairs that seem to have merged with the wall, as if it were simply constructed around them. The result is part absurdist art piece, part functional home furnishing.

The designer reclaimed three chairs and cut them apart so the various pieces could be attached to the wall for use as hangers, dubbing his creation ‘Wairs.’

The chairs were cut in such a way that they protrude from the wall at different angles, making each one unique and adding to the sense that they were just sort of thrown into some wet concrete before it set. The undersides of the seats create little shelves for small items like keys and wallets.
