Dried greenery has been a big trend over the last couple years, and while it was once hard to come by, you can now find it on the shelves of many home stores. First and foremost, spring means flowers. The best and simplest spring decor for your porch is just some affordable annuals tucked into your favorite pots or some galvanized buckets, which add a touch of rustic charm. You can find galvanized buckets and basins at your local hardware store, but check vintage markets, thrift stores, and flea markets, too. Some nice choices for annuals include phlox, sweet alyssum, coleus, polka dot plant, red nemesia, and edible nasturtiums.

Creating a DIY solar fountain is easier than it sounds, and it brings so much to outdoor spaces of all sizes: sparkly reflections, the sound of flowing water, and curious creatures seeking a drink or a bath. All you need is a floating solar fountain, which you can find on Amazon for under $12, and a watertight container like a galvanized bucket, an old wine barrel, or a planter pot without a drain hole.

So What the Heck is Cottagecore, Exactly?

In a March feature in The New York Times, 18-year-old enthusiast Emily Kellum called cottagecore “like Animal Crossing, but in real life.” Think Taylor Swift, verdant meadows, baskets full of foraged mushrooms and flowers, cozy sweaters, well-worn books, the smell of homemade apple pie baking in the oven… basically, everything you’d find in or near an idyllic cottage inhabited by wholesome TikTok-loving youth.

In large part, the cottagecore trend is a backlash against the chaos and complications of modern life, tinged with nostalgia for an idealized past that never really existed. Many of the teens and early-twenty-somethings who love cottagecore grew up with the internet and smartphones as a fact of life. Their #cottagecore posts on social media yearn for a time before these distractions while simultaneously making ample use of them. Cottagecore isn’t necessarily advocating for a Luddite mentality, but rather finding small, comfortable ways to escape all the hubbub.

Crucially, it’s also imagining this idealized way of life as all-inclusive, rejecting the traditional gender roles, homophobia, transphobia, and racism that ran rampant during actual historic times of so-called “simple living.” All this is to say it’s more than just an aesthetic; it’s a mentality. Cottagecore is usually associated with fashion, but extends to home decor, too, embracing faded floral prints, gingham patterns, natural materials, dainty vintage items like doilies and teacups, thrifted finds, botanical motifs, and found objects.

How to Pull Off Cottagecore Decor in Your Home

With cottagecore as your goal, everything you place in your home should add to the sense that you’re an elf living in a small enchanted house at the edge of the woods. Put some dried flowers in an empty olive oil tin. Mix and match your patterns with wild abandon. Plant some herbs in old broken teapots. Embrace the cutesy 1970s plates you found at Goodwill. Let the white paint peel off your furniture. You don’t need much of a budget to achieve the look and ambiance, just some creativity and a good eye.

Cottagecore definitely isn’t minimalist. You want your home to feel comfortable, cozy, lived-in, and well loved, not brand new or like a spread you’d find in a catalog. Layer things that bring you comfort and that you actually use. If you’re not sure where to start, there’s lots of great stuff tagged “cottagecore” on Etsy, including mystery gift boxes of natural curiosities, art prints, vintage dishes, upcycled teapot wind chimes, tiny terrariums, and just about anything with a mushroom on it.

If you have an elderly relative with trunks of old linens and other treasures they’d allow you to raid, even better. A lot of people tend to keep their frilly tablecloths, dainty floral dishes, and elaborate place settings closed up in a cupboard for months (if not years) on end, saving them for a “special occasion.” But they’re perfect for this aesthetic, and will add a sense of personal history to the little cottagecore scenes you create.

Now, they’re bringing that aesthetic into the home for the first time ever with a West Elm collaboration. The limited edition, sustainably produced collection of furniture and home decor is made with upcycled Eileen Fisher denim and other fabric scraps.

“Our team was delighted to partner with West Elm because of our shared passion for creating responsibly designed products,” says Eileen Fisher, designer, founder and co-CEO of her eponymous company. “With these beautiful designs, we are extending each garment’s life cycle and drastically reducing the waste that we put out into the world.”

The West Elm + Eileen Fisher Collection transforms a wardrobe staple into statement-making upholstery for a series of pillows and the Eileen Fisher Swivel Chair ($1,999). West Elm partnered with the fashion brand’s Waste No More team to recycle the fabric and felt it into a new textile using no water and very little energy. As you can see, the process preserves “the story” of the original fabric, making no attempt to hide what it was. Blocks of denim in colors ranging from near-white to deep indigo meld together in an effect that’s reminiscent of watercolors, all in soothing shades of blue.

The swivel chair is classic West Elm in design, but its body-hugging silhouette gets a little extra coziness from the unusual fabric. The pillow covers include three square throws ranging in size from 20” – 24” ($169 – $179 each), two 12” x 21” rectangular pillows in either light or dark indigo ($159), an extra long 14” x 36” lumbar pillow ($179), and the option to purchase sets of two for a discount.

By nature of the upcycled fabric, no two pieces are exactly alike, each bearing their own unique abstract pattern from the particular scraps used to create them. Eileen Fisher’s recycling team washes, repairs, and hand-layers them to achieve this effect.

If you’re not familiar with clothing take-back programs, they’re a pretty great way to adhere to the principle of “circular design,” in which the manufacturer takes responsibility for the entire life cycle of the products they create. Instead of ending up in landfills, garments that are ripped, stained, threadbare, or otherwise unwearable get a second life. More and more companies are starting to participate in programs like this, which will hopefully start to make an impact on the environmental impacts of fast fashion.

“Threshold – Designed with Studio McGee” marks the beginning of a multi-year partnership between the big-box store and a husband-and-wife team known for the warm and comfortable vibes they create for their clients. Their first collection together, which included lots of clean, bright, and effortlessly chic items for the living room and entry area, launched back in April. Now, they’re releasing a fall collection aiming to pump up the coziness as cooler weather rolls in.

“I am a huge fan of this partnership because I love that Target cares about bringing good design to everybody, which aligns perfectly with my goal to build a brand that makes good design feel approachable,” says Shea McGee, who founded the studio with her husband Syd in 2014.

She’s not kidding, either — these pieces are seriously affordable without skimping on style, with the furniture items feeling just as on-trend as the offerings at much more expensive retailers. For instance, the Surfside Round Wood End Table ($119) has a sculptural look that’ll bring a little creativity into the mix, and the Mercer Rolled Arm Upholstered Chair ($349) looks like a freshened-up antique with its front legs supported by brass casters. On the other hand, the Industrial Adjustable Metal Base Counter Height Stool ($79) makes a great complement to any industrial, modern, or farmhouse decor.

For maximum fall comfiness, McGee recommends mixing in some rich colors and textures with textiles like the Eyelash Chunky Knit Throw Blanket ($35) in rust, cream, or taupe. Pendant, floor, and table lamps enhance the ambiance and add a warm glow, with the Large Seagrass Pendant Table Lamp ($200) in particular making for a great way to work an organic element and a little woven pattern into your space at the same time.

Wall art is another strong point in the collection, and there are extraordinarily well-priced options here in a variety of styles, whether you’re into abstract modern art or traditional oil paintings. Take, for instance, this highly unusual prefabricated home in Stockholm, Sweden. Conceived of by Street Monkey Architects, the roof of the “Pulkabacken House” (Swedish for “Sledding Hill”) doubles as a bunny slope.

Pulkabacken House is deceptively simple when viewed from the back. Constructed from concrete modules and black steel panels, the home mostly looks like a standard modernist unit and contrasts beautifully with both winter snow and summer vegetation. Walk around to the front of the house, however, and you’ll think you’ve accidentally wandered into a ski resort.

Built on a sloping site on Värmdö, an island in the center of the Stockholm archipelago, Pulkabacken House is warmed and protected by its neighboring hillside. The clients wanted their home to feel like a refuge, camouflaged and obstructed when viewed from the road despite its close proximity to other houses. In reality, the architects chose to angle the home’s roofline down toward the higher end of the hillside for privacy purposes just as much as they did for recreational ones.

Most of the ramp’s surface has been made smooth for sledding fun. Below, on the home’s second story balcony, a ladder conveniently leads back up to the roof for those who want to go down the hill a second (or third?) time. This same balcony opens into the main living area, which looks out onto the sea. This floor boasts living and dining spaces, a kitchen with a study bar, a master bedroom, and two bathrooms. An internal stairwell leads down to the ground floor and features a cozy reading nook for those days when it’s just too cold to go outside.

Three more bedrooms, a family room, and a bathroom are all located on the Pulkabacken House’s bottom level, along with an outdoor terrace that steps out into a garden. The entire interior makes heavy use of a wintry color palette, whose recurring shades of white and silvery gray help blend the home into the surrounding outdoor landscape. The result is very much in line with the clean, orderly aesthetic of modern Swedish design.

During the summer, the rooftop ramp is covered in grass, transforming the slope into a terrace that the architects have called a “party deck.” In fact, Street Monkey sees the home promoting a vacation lifestyle all year long. While most homes on Värmdö are only used in the summertime, Pulkabacken House seems to have been made for all seasons. Plus, as Stockholm continues to grow, more people are beginning to inhabit its surrounding islands beyond the summer peak season.

“In the summer, the population of this area doubles and children migrate in packs from house to house,” explains architect Cage Copher. “One night you could end up with all of your friends’ children sleeping over, so the bedrooms are large and many.” On the local reception to the sledding roof, he says, “The kids who live nearby seem to be making the most of it!”
