Her passion for creating Black art stems from her childhood as a minority in Pomona, California. “Growing up, I was often the only Black kid in my class, and I found it hard to find things that represented my background,” Brown says on her website DomoINK.com. “My father and I would go out of our way to find greeting cards that had images of Black families on [them]. We’d buy them from individual sellers because many retailers didn’t carry them.”

As an adult looking to decorate her own home, the artist recognized there was still a severe lack of Black art at big-box stores. That’s when she decided to do something about it by starting her own brand of art prints, apparel, and home décor in her spare time.

“Our voices, idea, and stories still remain unspoken for in the art world,” Brown says. “I want my portraits to tell unknown stories. I want people of color to be represented.”

One of her most popular prints is her “Black Hair is Dope” portrait, which depicts a Black woman with a head cover and long twisted braids. Brown says of the piece: “I created this portrait to challenge stereotypes about Black people wearing durags. It serves to humanize and normalize that this headpiece is an essential aspect of our culture.”

At the start of the pandemic, Brown was working two full-time marketing jobs, putting in 80-hour weeks and making roughly $130,000 a year. She then quit one of those jobs and started designing in her evening hours. Although “there were a lot of sleepless nights” in the beginning, her artistic investment soon paid off. Brown’s after-hours work now amounts to less than two hours a day now and earns her $22,000 a month, thanks to sales on her website, Etsy shop, Society6 shop, and retail partnerships.

World-renowned companies including Disney, Samsung, and Lowe’s quickly took notice of Brown’s distinctive style and asked for collaborations. She’s even created art for the L.A. Lakers.

This year, Bath & Body Works commissioned Brown to craft a piece in honor of the Juneteenth. The result was an image of a Black family enjoying a picnic on the national holiday. She also recently completed a one-of-one artwork to decorate the walls of a Santa Monica Dr. Martens shop.

While her art career has officially taken off, Brown continues to work a traditional job as a marketing manager for an insurance company offering health care options to low-income Californians — but she loves making her mark with her side hustle.

“My ultimate goal is to make DomoINK a lifestyle retailer that can be a source of representation for those who are underrepresented,” Brown says. “The feedback I have gotten from people who feel seen by my work has been incredibly gratifying, and it inspires me to grow my business even more.”

Located inside LA’s Westfield Century City shopping mall, the SKKN pop-up displays small cylindrical and spherical products on huge slabs of cement and alcoves in the smooth, bare walls. Perron-Roettinger co-founder Willo Perron says he drew inspiration from rock quarries when designing the 1,330-square-foot space, bringing in large-scale shapes meant to evoke massive chunks of raw minerals. Instead of contrasting with the products, the setting amplifies their simple, elemental forms.

If the products are a little mysterious, that’s because they’re meant to be. Perron-Roettinger created opaque containers that obscure their contents, with labels like “face cream” and “exfoliator” printed in tiny, barely legible text. The refillable containers are also housed within secondary packaging that’s textured to resemble naturally occurring materials.

“We like how it feels to hold a ceramic mug, the natural color of a clay pot, what it feels like to run your hand through sand, and all the different shades and textures of limestone quarry,” Perron-Roettinger co-founder Brian Roettinger told It’s Nice That.

Staying within the same limited gray and beige color palette, Kardashian’s SKKN Home Accessories Collection is also on display at the LA pop-up. The five-piece houseware collection aims to capture the “calming aesthetic and neutral color palette of Kardashian’s home.” All made of hand-poured concrete, the collection consists of a vanity tray, spherical storage container, waste basket, tissue box, and a canister with a lid.

“I knew I wanted to complement my skincare collection with home accessories, designed to display my products and elevate the home with modern, minimalistic elegance,” Kardashian says. “When designing this collection, I wanted to bring the monochromatic interior design elements from my home to others. I’m excited to be able to share this collection with everyone.”

The SKKN pop-up shop will remain in place until the end of the year. As stark as the interior design and products may be, there’s no confusing the store for that of any other brand. Two enormous digital displays splashed with Kim’s face bookend the space, reminding shoppers what they’re really there for: a little bit of bottled essence du nouveau riche.

Willo Perron previously designed a pop-up store for Kardashian’s brand of undergarments, SKIMS, in 2021. Located on the ground floor of the Parisian department store Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann, the store was similarly smooth, beige, and low on embellishments, but drew inspiration from the hues and curves of human bodies instead of stone. The same design was repeated for a second pop-up store in Los Angeles later that year.

Last December, the company announced that prices at its stores would increase by an average of nine percent around the world in 2022, but nearly a year later, the numbers are looking just a tad higher than that estimate. IKEA has hiked the prices of some products across its five main categories by as much as 80 percent.

An investigation by Retail Week found some eye-popping increases on popular items like IKEA’s best-selling JOKKMOKK dining table and chairs, which went from £99 ($114) to £179 ($203) over the last 12 months, and the BRIMNES chest of drawers, which increased 47 percent to $125.

The MALM chest of drawers increased by 30 percent, the MELLTORP table and chairs set by 22 percent, and the TOMMARYD/TEODORES table and chairs set by 38 percent. The three-seat LANDSKRONA sofa rose 20 percent, the FYRESDAL daybed frame by 46 percent, the SLATTUM upholstered bed frame by 46 percent, and the GLOSTAD 2-seat sofa by a whopping 66 percent.

“We offer a wide range of well-designed, functional home furnishing products at prices so low that as many people as possible are able to afford them,” an IKEA spokesperson told Retail Week. “This remains our focus today and in the future. However, we are not immune to the macro-economic developments that businesses, retailers, and the public are currently facing, from the increased costs of materials and transportation to the war in Ukraine and inflation.”

“It is critical that we are financially resilient in the long term, to ensure our longevity as a business and employer, and we have had to adjust our prices to reflect this increased cost base.”

There’s certainly no danger that IKEA is going away anytime soon. Despite all of the challenges it cites, IKEA is doing better than ever. Inter IKEA, franchiser for the brand, reported record annual sales in October, with sales at all IKEA stores and online growing 6.5 percent in the 12 months through August.

The company notes that “sales have grown in money, but sales quantities have not kept up.” Inter IKEA CEO Jon Abrahamsson says the company has not passed on all input cost increases to retailers, absorbing some itself.

Ingka Group, which owns most IKEA stores including those in Europe and the ones that closed in Russia, said that its own sales rose 5.6 percent, growing in most of its markets. Availability of products also improved. In March, Ingka CEO Jesper Brodin anticipated raising prices by an average of 12 percent, but the company ended up reducing those hikes over the summer as supply chains recovered.

“We currently don’t see any big slowdown tendencies, but we have deep respect for the year that we are in…and we are prepared for a tough winter for people everywhere,” Brodin says.

If you’re shopping for home goods on a budget and bummed by this news, take heart: IKEA isn’t the only source of stylish and ultra-affordable furniture. Check out brands like Novogratz, Capsule, Studio McGee at Target, and Amazon’s private-label brands.

The roughly 322 square feet of Zhima Health’s “Beijing Youli” store at the new Universal Beijing Resort posed a significant challenge to WUUX and its founder Wang Yong. That small space was to be the first stop for visitors coming to experience the thrill of movie magic in the Chinese iteration of the Universal Studios theme park.

The designers had to somehow create a space that provided both function and “strong emotional value” for visitors to the park. Taking inspiration from the Hollywood blockbuster Inception, Yong infinitely expanded the small square footage with a series of steel arches and ceiling-mounted staircases that appear to be replicating themselves from multiple points in the room.

“The entire space, thanks to the arches and stair structures, resembles an unfolded accordion which is waking up the folded time and space,” explains the Beijing-based firm.

The design started with five tall mirrored steel arches that run the length of the store and intersect each other at the midpoint of the ceiling. Then three blonde wood “endless ladders” were positioned to look like they were coming out of the walls from above. To achieve this psychedelic look, Wong and his team added full-length mirrors on the back wall and the ceiling. Finally, the rammed earth walls were outfitted with display space for Zhima Health products, which in turn get visually boomeranged throughout the M.C. Escher-like space.

“‘A whole glass on the ceiling and one side of the wall, together with the stretching structures that present a distortion in time and space, seems to have eliminated the boundary of the room and distorted time in a dazzling way,” says Wong of the design. “With light projecting from underneath the ground and structured light belts on the arches, a metaverse is throwing its arms wide open to all customers.”

As the first stop off the subway into the park, the Zhima Health Beijing Youli store fulfills its call to “carry on the essence while pursuing innovations” of the time-honored brands it stocks. The illusion of warped reality provides an ideal realm for social networking and grabbing a refreshing drink before entering the theme park for a day of thrills.

WUUX’s eye-catching store has been hailed as a “disruptive new retail experience” that caters to the “diversified preferences” of China’s youth that also “conforms to resort culture.”

Since being founded in 2015 by Wang Yong, Wuxiang Architecture Design Studio has been involved in everything from interior design and architecture to environmental art design and space art consultation. The firm “pays attention to the sense of temperature in space and is dedicated to the purpose behind things.” The Zhima Health store at Universal Studios Beijing is the latest in a long list of work WUUX has done in commercial real estate, hotels and resorts, high-end clubs, corporate space customization, and retail experience stores.

A trendy neutral backdrop completes the illusion, with a touch of sophistication in the form of chic limestone flooring.

Cris Belos — Belo Horizonte, Brazil

This luxe, elevated boutique by the London and São Paulo-based Carolina Maluhy + Partners is dominated by creamy neutral tones and curvy, imaginative touches that exude a futuristic fashion house vibe. Consisting of four connected rooms (each more sweeping than the last), the sprawling space has no shortage of elegance: simply look to the sweeping staircase or the airy, incandescent ceiling if you don’t believe us.

Bala — Soho, New York City

Consumer engagement and sensory immersion go hand-in-hand in Bala’s first-ever retail space. Designed by Madelynn Ringo of Ringo Studio, the playful space is brimming with pretty pastels and gorgeous geometry. An experiential store where guests are encouraged to embrace the products’ textures, weightiness, and above all, playfulness, the vivid hues and soft, inviting atmosphere embody the brand’s aesthetic perfectly.

In July the H-E-B Grocery Company, which operates over 300 stores in Texas and 50 in Northern Mexico, installed “Fast Scan” technology checkout machines in its Schertz, Texas stores, prompting curious customers to post on Twitter and TikTok.

“All you have to do is run your basket through and the machine (is) going to scan everything inside the basket and pay the amount on the receipt,” explains H-E-B shopper Christoken Johnson.

The store confirmed its experimentation with automated checkout, explaining: “At H-E-B, we continue to evaluate and utilize innovative technologies in all parts of our business. This checkout option is part of a limited pilot program we’re currently testing internally with our partners.”

H-E-B is certainly not the first grocery store to foray into the world of cashier-less checkout, but it does represent just how widespread the technology has become, and how popular the “frictionless shopping” experience is these days.

Amazon was one of the first innovators of such technology, opening their “just walk out” Amazon Go grocery shops in 2021. Customers in any of the more than 50 locations can choose the automated checkout option when they walk in simply by scanning a QR code in the Amazon app and inserting a linked credit or debit card. As they shop, cameras and pressure sensors on shelves identify the customers’ selections. As they leave the store, the system automatically bills their card for their purchases, and a digital receipt is sent to their phone or email.

Similar modernizations are also happening in other parts of the world. Trigo, an Israeli tech company, has created a system very close to the Amazon Go model, with ceiling-mounted cameras that use proprietary algorithms to track shopper’s movements and product choices. The company’s tech is already operational in grocery stores in Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, the U.S., and Israel.

One standout feature of Trigo’s system is that it can be incorporated into existing grocery stores, where Amazon has to build stores from the ground up to compete. “Physical retail is the one space where traditional businesses can take on Amazon and win. The chains we’re working with have thousands of existing stores, Amazon has to build new stores,” says Michael Gabay, who co-founded Trigo with his brother Daniel in 2018.

Critics of these automated checkout rollouts worry that they’ll eliminate jobs by cutting out the need for cashiers. There are roughly 8,650,000 grocery cashiers in the U.S. today, most without college degrees and predominately coming from minority backgrounds. If their jobs disappear, an entire field of entry-level work would be eliminated.

Stores argue that the jobs will still exist, but in different forms. For instance, the digital checkout systems require that all products be physically placed in the exact right place for the cameras to capture and scan them. Inventories still need to be restocked manually as well.

What definitely can’t be replaced is the human interaction of having a cashier check out your cart. But in today’s post-COVID world, it’s hard to tell how many people would actually mourn that loss.

“The global economic environment is a challenge that many of you around the world are no doubt experiencing,” the company said in the post. “We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries. Based on these challenging economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price (RRP) of PlayStation 5 in select markets across Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Asia-Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM), as well as Canada. There will be no price increase in the United States.”

The following price changes went into effect immediately:

• Europe: An increase of €50 to €549.99 for the PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and €449.99 for the digital version.

• UK: A £30 increase to £479.99 for the disc model and £389.99 for the digital version.

• China: A ¥400 yuan increase to ¥4,299 yuan for the disc model and ¥3,499 yuan for the digital version.

• Australia: An AUD $50 increase to AUD $799.95 for the disc model and AUD $649.95 for the digital version.

• Mexico: An MXN $1,000 increased to MXN $14,999 for the disc model and MXN $12,499 for the digital version.

• Canada: CAD $20 increase to CAD $649.99 for the disc model and CAD $519.99 for the digital version.

• Japan will also see a price increase of ¥5000 yen to ¥60,478 yen (including tax) for the disc version and ¥49,478 yen (including tax) for the digital model, but it won’t be effective until September 15th, 2022.

While the PS5 has been plagued by supply chain issues since its launch in November 2020, Sony has seen a two-percent year-over-year decline in its gaming unit sales, in addition to a nearly 37-percent dive in operating profits.

Those tough conditions may be why Sony stated that “this price increase is a necessity given the current global economic environment and its impact on [Sony’s] business.” In the wake of this consumer-upsetting news, competitors Microsoft and Nintendo promised to keep their current prices for the time being.

“We are constantly evaluating our business to offer our fans great gaming options,” Microsoft said in a statement. “Our Xbox Series S suggested retail price remains at $299 (£250, €300) and the Xbox Series X is $499 (£450, €500).”

Now, Masquespacio is stepping even further into the future with their newest offering in Barcelona: a Mango Teen store that’s an iconoclastic invention steeped in both the physical and digital worlds. Brimming with bright, vivid hues and expressive angles, the store echoes the color palettes commonly favored by the firm in past projects. However, in a dramatic departure from the norm, here they’ve decided to take their vision to the next level, creating a real-life/metaverse mashup where multipurpose features reign supreme.

Designed as a way to connect teens with a new “spatial identity,” the firm wanted to create an immersive store that reflected the world many young people find themselves spending increasingly more time in. As Masquespacio’s Ana Hernandez said in a recent statement, being a teen is “…a time when you start to dream big, without taking in mind the limits. [But] above in your dreams, strange things are happening that are out of the box…things that are not real.”

It is this dreamlike aura that defines the new Mango Teen store. Like a trippy multi-layered onion, its real-life layers are peeled back to reveal doorways into the metaverse a la Alice in Wonderland, beginning with the brightly-colored entrance arch, where shoppers make their backlit way into the store, and ending with a dreamy, distorted dressing room experience whose reflective surfaces and Art Deco flair creatively combine the store’s hybrid ethos. According to Masquespacio, these dressing rooms were one of the shop’s most requested features.

The store’s real-world features ground the colorful space in reality while also serving as immersive multipurpose stations. A hotel reception desk doubles as a checkout counter, a swimming pool doubles as an exhibition space, and a washing machine acts as a recycling spot where customers can donate old clothes. The distinctive decor is also meant to mimic the store’s digital/analog combo, with matte surfaces and brightly-lit reflective paneling in beautifully deliberate fashion. Elsewhere, the blending of straight and curving organic lines is a nod to Mango Teen’s inclusive message, meant to evoke an atmosphere of gender neutrality.

Masquespacio has raised the bar even higher on their colorfully creative vision with their new Mango Teen store in Barcelona. Here, reality itself is distorted and reimagined to reflect the ever-growing digital world waiting just behind the (dressing room) curtains.

Since 2019, Etsy has honored the diversity and creativity of their worldwide creators with their Design Awards (aka the Etsies), where judges trawl through applicants’ best work to find the cream of the crop and recognize what’s tops in originality, functionality, and overall aesthetics.

Now, Gucci’s former HQ at the historic and high-end Grafton Street in Mayfair, London has come on the market for a whopping $66 million. The last private residence remaining on the prestigious street, the mansion is currently owned by a trust and has undergone extensive renovations since the brand vacated in 2010. But the property itself remains as gorgeous as ever, and much of the 14,000 square-foot home’s most modern touches remain much as they were during Gucci’s tenure.

There’s plenty of history in this former headquarters. Its recent refurbishing by Donald Insall Associates, though extensive, left much of the building’s original features untouched, including gold plaster work by Joseph Rose, cabinetry by John Mayhew, Georgian fireplaces, and 20-foot tall ceilings, all Victorian-era details that were part of the original home designed by Sir Robert Taylor in the 1770s.

These luxe touches certainly speak to the property’s illustrious past, not only as an HQ for Gucci from 2000 through 2010, but also as a house (literally) fit for royalty. During Gucci’s residence. Creative Director Tom Ford’s workspace was located in the first floor drawing room, a luxe and palatial space once used to entertain none other than Her Majesty Queen Victoria.

However, the spacious property also has plenty of modern touches, including a sauna, swimming pool, and plunge pool; a movie theater; a convenient elevator; a fully-equipped kitchen; and a stringent automated security system.

During Gucci’s residence, the top floor was reserved for the office of former CEO Domenico De Sole. Today, the top two floors consist of four VIP bedrooms, including a well-appointed main suite/lounge area complete with a private study, bathroom, and kitchenette. Elsewhere on this floor, a private wing houses additional guest bedrooms packed with their own top-notch perks. The mid-level floors—once home to Gucci personnel — contain an additional five bedrooms and bathrooms now reserved for the residence’s current live-in staff.

The ground and first floor — once the home’s hub for entertaining royalty and distinguished guests — remain as a series of sumptuous reception and drawing rooms, in addition to a lavish dining room, many of which were previously used as Gucci meeting areas and boardrooms.

Beauchamp Estates’ founding director Gary Hersham says the palatial property is the perfect home for anyone looking to live “like Gucci.” One look inside the magnificent mansion is enough to see that the iconic Italian fashion house certainly knew how to live and work in style.

The new Zara Home x Vincent Van Duysen collection includes 19 products, including sofas, armchairs, desks, tables, consoles, lighting, ceramics, and textiles. It’s the first designer collaboration under the retailer’s new premium ZARAHOME+ line. Made of high-quality materials like solid French oak, leather, cotton, linen. and sanded stone from Galicia, Spain, the collection will be priced higher than usual for Zara, with sofas starting at $6,300 and rugs starting at $500.

“I am democratic, heart and soul,” Van Duysen says. “And I love the philosophy, the attitude, and the positioning of Zara in the world to make beautiful things accessible for any of us. I wanted to see what that would look like for my furniture.”

Marta Ortega, chair of Zara’s parent company Inditex, has long been a fan of Van Duysen’s work. When Ortega visited the architect’s Antwerp home in person, she immediately began to envision what a collaboration between Van Duysen and Zara could look like. He enthusiastically accepted her proposal and began looking back on his extensive portfolio to get an idea of how he could adapt his signature style for the company’s customers.

“I’ve spent 35 years building up my name, my career, my aesthetics, and my DNA, and I’m here to inspire, so that anybody in the world can buy beautifully crafted furniture at a decent price from me,” Van Duysen says. “I want my pieces to be in everyone’s home, no matter who they are and no matter at what scale.”

Van Duysen’s own homes, past and present, offered a lot of inspiration for this project — especially the very first one he designed in Belgium after returning from school in Milan. He wanted to recapture the classic simplicity of that space, producing pieces that were stripped down to their “purest forms” to eliminate frills and excess.

That doesn’t mean the pieces lack visual interest, of course. Standouts include elegant stools in natural wood and leather, a dreamy boucle-clad sofa destined to give the “cloud sofa” trend a run for its money, and hefty and solid-feeling oak and limestone tables with cross-shaped bases. The pieces are designed to fit into virtually any home, from a tiny urban apartment to a stately country manor, in terms of both style and scale.

The collection represents the first time Van Duysen’s work has been globally available. Though Zara doesn’t have any brick-and-mortar retail stores in the United States, the ZARAHOME+ Vincent Van Duysen living room collection is now available on Zara’s website, with a new dining collection set to launch in October. You can also find pieces in select Zara flagship locations throughout Europe.
