Longing to revamp your space? Maybe 2020 is the year. As we head into a new decade, designers are forecasting some truly inspiring trends. In what’s sure to be the most eclectic year for interior design, what’s old is once again new, sustainable elements protect our Earth while making us more beautiful, and minimalism is turned up to the max. Why not start the new year out in style with a resolution to enliven your own space with the freshest decor ideas from the world’s top trend-setting interior designers?

Let’s take a look at everything you can expect to see trending in 2020:

Geometry with Purpose

Adorning interiors with geometric shapes is a hallmark of timeless design, but this style of decor can literally make your head spin if it’s overdone. Instead of past trends of mismatched patterns all competing for attention in one room in 2020, we’re more likely to see just how one or two unique geometric patterned pieces can make a bold statement. Add chic patterned wallpaper, accent pillows, or artwork to make a small room subtly pop, and a carefully-placed geometric area rug to add balance and visual interest.

Lighten Up

Natural light wood and minimalist interior design have always gone hand-in-hand. But in 2020, top designers are going even lighter with eco-friendly sustainable wood pieces that are both sculptural and artistic. Think Scandinavian design with a minimalist, clean-lined artsy aesthetic, as seen in this functional dining table lined with rounded chairs.

Bold Color Match

If you’ve had enough of gray and beige to last a millennium, then the latest trend in accent walls is sure to set your heart aflutter. Color is a powerful visual on both walls and ceilings, after all. And in 2020, we’re going to go even bolder and match the color to our furnishings.

One color can go a long way! It can add a bit of unexpected pop, vibrancy, and even drama to your space. Try a deep cobalt blue hue with a matching sofa to convey moody elegance, or warm burnt orange earth tones in a matching dining ensemble to lend warmth and grace.

Black and White Nostalgia

Framed black-and-white photography is a bold design element that works in any space, and luckily for us, it’s making a big comeback. Photos like these pull at our heartstrings by harkening back to a bygone era, subsequently making us long for those nostalgic moments that define our history.

Also on trend: create drama with a monochromatic black wall or art deco ziggurat tile.

Mix and Match Metals

Designing with gold and silver finishes has been all the rage for the last few years. In 2020, designers predict we are going to see more of this luminous trend but with a twist: mixing and matching. Pair silver and brown metals or gold and bronze to create a luxurious look. Try a free-form metal tub or a gold-finished bar cart grounded by a silvery textured area rug to glam up your bathroom.

Nostalgic Lighting

Art deco style, typically characterized by bold black and gold geometric patterns, plush furnishings, and decadent detailing, is definitely back, but we’re not just talking about furnishings. Vintage art deco revival pieces are mega on-trend in the way of 2020 lighting. With the old being new again, art deco lighting is sure to lend some glam and elegance to any space. Look for snazzy milk glass globe chandeliers, pendants, and speakeasy type lamps to illuminate every room in your home!

Posh and Plush to the Max

While minimalism certainly isn’t going away any time soon, designers also predict 2020 to be the start of maximalism. Channeling the decadent art deco speakeasies of the 1930s and curvaceous sculptural forms of the 80s, the year 2020 will be big in the way of both posh and plush. Velvet and plush fabrics are going to be everywhere, from sofas and accent pillows to dining chairs, benches, and barstools! Plush color particularly pops in velvety earth tones like burnt orange and olive green along with jewel tones like purple passion, cobalt blue, and deep burgundy.

Back to Nature

The trend towards designing with sustainable materials in mind is front and center as designers put for even highly environmental standards in 2020. Think neutral beiges and fawn wall color paired with cocktail and accent tables created with reclaimed wood, stone, cork, or bamboo.

Sculptural Trends of the 80s

From sofas and armchairs to cocktail and occasional tables, sculptural design has always been in high demand. In 2020, top European designers are welcoming the return of the 80s, when statement pieces like curved sofas were all the rage. Today, we’ll see more of that glamorous design with sofas, loveseats, and accent tables in curvaceous forms that feel more like functional art than furniture.

Ceilings with Personality

Look for decorated ceilings to make a grand entrance in 2020. No longer boring and blank, they give personality to your home with bold colors like Kelly green, cobalt blue, and poppy red. Geometric patterned wallpaper can also turn a fun and whimsical decor scheme into something striking and modern. Looking for a little ambiance? Try flowing draped fabrics to create a romantic canopy look.

The post 10 Interior Design Trends Set to Dominate 2020 first appeared on Dornob.

The Star Wars empire has remained well in the entertainment world’s center-stage since the original movie release in 1977. For the past few weeks, fans have been enjoying The Mandalorian via the new streaming service Disney+, and it’s already become a smash-hit in it’s own right. A big reason for this is an undeniably adorable character being referred to as “Baby Yoda,” a moniker that isn’t quite accurate but is definitely descriptive enough (while the fox-eared baby is the same species as Master Yoda, it is not a younger version of the famed Jedi and is simply named “The Child” in the series).

Warsies looking for “The Child” merchandise prior to the release of the series were sorely out of luck since the studio didn’t want to leak any spoilers regarding the storyline and the pint-sized Yoda look-alike. As a result, there’s been a notable gap in the release of official Baby Yoda merch, allowing a flood of knockoffs to fill the void. Several people have reported being duped by these third-party products, while others seem more willing to accept a “less than” version of the real thing. Either way, just remember to do your research if you plan on gifting “The Child” to your child this year.

Without further ado, here are a few of our favorite Baby Yoda pieces to be announced thus far:

“The Child” Tee

T-shirts are the long-lasting and frequently-used merchandise every fan should own, and this 100-percent cotton tee offers both the adorable character and the comfort. Available in white with just the image or dark gray with the character’s name printed above, there will be no doubt that the Force is strong with you when you’re wearing it. The same print is also available in a ¾-sleeve jersey-style tee with the words “The Mandalorian” printed below it. There are also black-and-white tee options for kids.

Jigsaw Puzzle

For Star Wars fans who also enjoy working on jigsaw puzzles, this is an easy choice. Unfortunately, it won’t ship until December 30th, so plan accordingly. But with 500 pieces and a bonus poster, you’ll be able to enjoy The Child’s adorableness again and again.

PopSocket

One item you can get in time for stocking stuffing is the licensed PopSocket with The Child’s image printed on it. PopSockets are obviously “pop”ular with all ages as a cell phone accessory, and they make a great way to show off your love for the little alien.

Bobblehead

There’s no better way to expose your Warsian ways than with a Baby Yoda bobblehead. Coming in spring of 2020, the Funko POP! doll will be available in two sizes. It’s a little bit creepy and a lot bit cute.

11-Inch Plush

Though it’s not expected to be released until at least February 2020, we thought this one was just too cute to leave off the list. The plush is currently on preorder and will likely be the most anticipated product in the entire lineup. After all, who can resist that face?

Disney’s decision to delay the release of instantly iconic “The Child” merchandise has been met with mixed reception, but with confidence in consumers’ ongoing desire to be part of the Star Wars story, the company now seems to be releasing new items almost daily.

“It was important to us that the reveal of the new character, the Child, be a special moment for fans, and we could not be more thrilled with the response,” says Paul Southern, Senior Vice President of Licensing and Franchise for Lucasfilm. “Today, we’re excited to release new products for preorder on shopDisney.com, and are continuing to work closely with our licensees and retailers to roll out additional items including toys, collectibles, plush, games, apparel, and more, allowing fans to celebrate the newest addition to Star Wars.”

The post The Mandalorian’s “Baby Yoda” Merchandise is Both Adorable and Frustrating first appeared on Dornob.

Artists are sometimes inspired by visions, dreams, and other ethereal encounters. For others, the muse that arouses creativity is much more mundane. Anna Yastrezhembovskaya’s motivation was the latter: a simple plaything she ran across in a toy store.

The Power of Plush

While perusing toys for her young children, Yastrezhembovskaya came upon a collection of plush toys made from wool and felt. She was instantly taken aback by the incredibly soft tactile nature of the creations. Unlike typical stuffed toys, these were so soft and cuddly — they seemed to melt into her hands when she caressed them. And what could be more comforting than a soft sculpture that appeared to have a positive response to human touch?

Anna knew right away that she had to try making these toys herself, so she stocked up on wool, felt, and tiny glass spheres to use as eyes. However, creating creatures that looked real (her ultimate goal) was more difficult than she anticipated. She admitted, “My first toy wasn’t nearly as pretty, it was rather funny. But I enjoyed the process so much that I kept trying. I was felting during my free time, even at night, and I got better with each toy I made.”

Pushing Forward

Before long, Yastrezhembovskaya mastered her art, and her portfolio started growing. She gained her inspiration from the wildlife that thrived in the local forests, including birds, hedgehogs, and bats, as well as more common pets like rabbits and cats. Spiders and baby chicks also became part of her repertoire. When she began marketing her creations online, interest grew, but it was one particular creation that catapulted her into the public eye.

Up to Bat

At the request of her daughter, Yastrezhembovskaya attempted to make a brooch that resembled a bat. When her efforts failed, she opted to create a wool and felt bat instead. Not only was her daughter impressed by her art, but the oft-maligned creature also proved an instant hit with her online fans. Before she knew it, the bat was in so much demand that she felt overwhelmed — mostly because it takes Yastrezhembovskaya 10 12-to-14 hour days to make just one of them.

She says of this experience, “I am flattered that my bats won the hearts of so many people, but the amount of orders I got was terrifying. Of course, I will keep felting as many bats as I can, but I want people to understand that these toys are fully handmade, so it’s a fairly lengthy process.”

A Passion for Perfection

Anna’s business started growing after she sold a few pieces on Etsy. From there, she started sharing her crafts around the world on a variety of platforms. Fans can feel the love and pride she feels for every piece she makes and how important flawlessness is to her.

“Wool is a very gentle and cozy material for me,” she says. “When I sort the fibers between my fingers, when I shape them with a needle — I put my soul into each toy.”

The post Artist Anna Yastrezhembovskaya Spins Simple Wool Into Cuddly Creatures first appeared on Dornob.

Making its North American debut in February 2019 on the “Big Fat America Tour,” Dixon’s new collection is designed to hug the body in a variety of seated positions. The rounded cushions on these dining chairs, lounge chairs, and bar stools encircle you with molded foam when you sit down. The London-based designer says the “extreme simplicity” of their components, including the glossy black metal bases, is a testament to form following function “while maintaining a humorous silhouette and a reductionist aesthetic.”

There’s something instantly iconic about these chairs’ shapes, particularly in this palette of black, gray, beige, and ivory. The aim of FAT, and of many other Dixon designs, is to strip out all unnecessary complexity, leaving behind a refreshingly usable object that’s also gallery-worthy in its own right. The design process played a significant role in these results, starting with quality materials and intriguing shapes and using full-sized mockups and prototypes to produce pleasing proportions.

For OPAL, Dixon formulated a custom tinted white opalescent polycarbonate for the globes to produce a ghostly ethereal effect of soft, diffused light. The spheres were then blow-molded for a shape that’s just imperfect enough to appear organic. The collection is comprised of two different-sized pendant lamps, a surface-mounted lamp, a vertical floor lamp, and an arcing floor lamp.

Dixon notes that new technologies help spur his creative approach to these new pieces, particularly when it came to lighting. The digitization of the manufacturing industry is providing designers with unprecedented freedom to experiment with innovative new materials and small production runs of concept products.

Dixon’s website reads: “Tom is a restless innovator who works mainly in lighting, accessories, and furniture. From his departure point in the early eighties welding salvaged steel into radical furniture, he has constantly reinvented himself through a series of different design lives — working on luxury Italian goods with Cappellini, Creative Director at Habitat and Artek, creating plastics company Eurolounge, and finally instigating his own eponymous brand in 2002 to rethink the product designer’s relationship with industry.”

“The latest chapter of Tom’s design journey began in 2002 when he left corporate life to create his own eponymous brand as a platform for a series of new adventures in the design of products and interiors. 15 years on, Tom Dixon is now a widely celebrated global force in interior design, with hubs in New York, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, and Tokyo. Our 600 products range from lighting to furniture, from tableware through to fragrance, and are distributed in over 65 countries; they are instantly recognizable for their sculptural qualities and engineered materiality.”

You’re far less apt to give away something you spent hours creating than something you grabbed at a cheap price point from a big box store, for example. It’s not just the time you put into the project, but your creative touch that gives it extra value. So it’s no surprise that modular furniture systems that let us be the designers of our own couches, armchairs and sectionals are growing more popular.
Stylish and interactive, this particular kit-of-parts couch, chair and stool system looks like large, heavy pieces of solid furniture at first glance. Once you know what to look for, though, each interchangeable modular object becomes visually legible on a whole new level.

Deconstructing the Modi system of transforming furniture from Moredesign, one finds it is not as simple as it first appears. The black base is a straightforward framework in which one can ‘plug’ various white cushion elements to create various kinds and configurations of useful seating. Want your sofa to have a back and two arms, like a conventional design? You can do that, or create configurations that are more like chaise lounges with a single arm and a long back surface. The limitations are up to your imagination.

Stood side by side, these convertible furniture elements can stretch to make full-length, L-shaped or other wrap-around modular couch and guest-bed sets. Pulled apart, the padded-but-rigid corner, back and armrest-hight elements enable one to create ottomans and individual chairs.

But the proof, to paraphrase, is in the final product: at the end of the day, the results look like fine furniture creations that could have come from a fashionable European designer rather than the do-it-yourself resident who gets to put them together.

The post Modular Puzzle Piece Furniture Series first appeared on Dornob.

While they might now be hidden away with baby books and photo albums, almost every child had a plush dog, rabbit, or frog that never failed to lull them to sleep or magically end their heartfelt sobbing. Now everyone can have that cushy comfort in their sofas and chairs, thanks to the combined creativity of luminary designer brothers Humberto and Fernanda Campana and star artist KAWS, a.k.a Brian Donnelly.

Seamless Coupling

Marc Benda, founder of the gallery where the new pieces are currently being displayed, explained that the collaboration was easy and natural. As he tells it, KAWS was already a fan of the Campana brothers and even owned a few of their pieces, including an inimitable Bolatas chair and an inviting couch constructed from leather teddy bears. KAWS was also aware of their other furniture created from stuffed lions, alligators, tigers, sharks, and pandas. He wanted to fuse their plush furniture with his own toys, resulting in the limited-edition KAWSxCampana collection that exists today.

The setting for the exhibit at Friedman Benda was created by Lelia Arruda, the gallery’s in-house exhibition designer. The booth was lined with petal-pink wallpaper and interspersed with images of KAWS’ signature creatures, each of them complete with crossed-out eyes and round noses. Within, a pink chair, black chair, and pink sofa were perched on round, elevated stands. The wall behind these pieces displayed two oversized plush Xs sewn together to mimic the “hides” of assorted KAWS creations. Curious eyes widened as they absorbed the odd pairing of child-like hues and an overall sense eerie morbidity. Still, the combination felt kind of perfect, and the three pieces sold almost instantly. Benda wouldn’t say who bought the pieces or whether they were bigger fans of KAWS or the Campana brothers, but he did assure everyone that the art would be going to some “pretty amazing homes.”

The Appeal Of Simplicity

=
Collaboration among complex artists sometimes bears simple results. This trio’s meeting of minds turned out furniture pieces with straightforward metal frameworks covered with 75 to 120 of KAWS’ plush toys, all of them carefully stitched together. Each plush character features two white eyeballs with signature crosses through them, a dainty soft pink button nose, and floppy arms and legs. Every piece is supported by four slim wooden legs, each of which has been slightly angled and given a round end. The crowning glory, a “KAWS” autograph, adorns one foot of each character.

Kindred Spirits

At first consideration, KAWS and the Campana brothers seem like a long-shot combination to produce work that’s both compelling and reflective of their diverse talents. KAWS has teamed up with brands like Air Jordan and Uniqlo in recent years, and the Campana brothers have occasionally swerved off the road of fine design to successfully explore set design and fashion. That shared love of artistic adventure was evident to Humberto Campana from the very beginning. He recalls: “When we first met KAWS, we understood his ability to tell those stories that you will always remember. KAWSxCampana created a common story of referring to memories of childhood, affection, and well being. We are both storytellers.”

The post Studio Campana and KAWS Collaborate on Wild Limited-Edition Seating first appeared on Dornob.

Ever enter the bedroom and realize you still have to make the bed before you can crash for the night? Making sleep simpler, one cushion at a time, this design may be the simplest do-it-yourself bed ever conceived.

Created by textile designer Linda Topic for a competition, this is a semi-serious look at an easy alternative to complex and costly wooden frames. Hard to say how well the super-soft approach would work for less-tolerant backs, but the idea is genuinely ingenious.

The core set of six comforters replace the need of any joints or support connections, while an impromptu headboard is likewise plush – the pillows are a given. For simplicity, the colors (or lack thereof) span a range from white to dark gray like the Belgian skies that inspired them. The result is beautifully textural, minimalist and luxuriously comfortable. One can’t help but think of the fairytale The Princess and the Pea. If you felt a lump of anything underneath all these layers, you’re one sensitive person indeed.

If any of this looks familiar, it may be because Dornob covered something quite similar once before – the work of Christian Hoegner which provides an all-white contrast to this bed in the form of a couch composed entirely of cushions. Christian’s sofa sleeper uses smaller cushions to achieve a similar effect as “The Bed”, but for use as a couch instead of a bed.

“Linda Topic focuses on revealing matter through simple and careful gestures. Whether using artisanal or industrial techniques (felting, silkscreen printing, jacquard weaving, laser cutting…) her work defines a dynamic space where matter and color are explored and meet. She pursues these explorations alongside collaborators within their various disciplines – artists, artisans, editors, design studios and interior designers. Linda Topic’s different projects are invitations to an open and intuitive use of our daily environment.”

The post Make the Bed: Simple Stacked Comforters for Lazy Sleepers first appeared on Dornob.

Concrete is a typical patio finish that most associate with being cheap and easy – something that results in a hard-and-fast surface that has little character to it. They key, though, is context and contrast. Set the right outdoor furniture in an otherwise cold-and-simple outdoor space and you can make it seem comfortable or even exotic.

Trendir has singled out some outdoor furniture sets from Paola Lenti that are “soft and welcoming, instantly transforming the cold, hard environment into an oasis of relaxation.” The cushions bring a plush contrast to the gray concrete but the cool colors compliment the stoney surfaces as well. We love the minimalist frame shapes and the way they create interesting silhouettes close to the ground.

Sure, your backdrop might not be quite as exotic as this architecture but all the same there are some fairly easy ways to take your interior design strategies outside and make use of what might otherwise be neglected spaces due to their overtly less comfortable surfaces and materials.

These lush Italian courtyards dripping with ivy aren’t exactly the kind of cold concrete patios many people are trying so hard to spruce up, but they’re a good example of how the right lush materials and saturated colors can transform the vibe of the space.

About Paola Lenti Outdoor Furniture

“For Paola Lenti the rug has always been a furnishing accessory that helps to define the space and adds style and character to the rooms. In the indoor rugs the protagonist is felt, a natural material with great technical qualities to which wool tails can be superimposed, whose combination generates new and original patterns and colour shades.”

“For exteriors, water-repellent materials, loomed or woven, create carpets and mats that evoke natural landscapes. In products such as the headboard of the Silent bed, or the indoor and outdoor seats of the Home and Aqua collections and the Plump mattresses, interwoven materials are used in Chain and Chain Outdoor, with which the art of weaving is proposed in a contemporary and technical way.”

The post The Right Outdoor Furniture Can Even Make a Concrete Patio Cozy first appeared on Dornob.
