Mirrored ornaments and reflective lights are visible in nearly every room, inviting viewers to see themselves in the White House, and find themselves “in the great story of America,” as the Bidens stated in a welcome letter in the 2022 White House Holiday Guide.

“The soul of our nation is and always has been ‘We the People,’” Dr. Biden says. “And that is what has inspired this year’s White House holiday decorations. The values that unite us can be found all around you: a belief in possibility and optimism and unity. Room by room, we represent what brings us together during the holidays and throughout the year.”

“We may celebrate different holidays, we may sing different songs or say different prayers, but our shared American values endure season after season. May the promise of ‘We the People’ light our path forward into the new year and bring us together always.”

The East Wing represents “Honor and Remembrance,” featuring bells to symbolize the unifying, healing power of music. The columns and beams of the East Wing Lobby are lined with greenery and red cardinals, which signify the presence of lost loved ones. The first Christmas trees featured on the White House Tour are covered in mirrored Gold Star ornaments inscribed with the names of fallen service members. In the East Colonnade, wintery birch trees, glowing lanterns, and handmade woodland animals evoke the feeling of tranquility after the winter’s first snowfall.

The Library features decor inspired by literature, history, and education alongside a copy of the Declaration of Independence, printed circa 1845. In the Vermeil room, a theme of “Kindness and Gratitude” comes together with piles of gifts from Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization that delivers packages to deployed troops, first responders, and military families. If you look closely, you’ll see illustrations of the Biden family’s pets, Commander and Willow.

The China room evokes family traditions passed down through generations, with decor inspired by a grandmother’s baking tools. In the East Room, “Nature and Recreation” are honored with groupings of snow-covered fir trees and representations of National Parks from around the country. The decor in the Green Room is inspired by familiar carols, with sleigh bells, hand bells, and jingle bells all around.

In the Blue Room, “Unity and Hope” are represented by renderings of the official birds from all 57 states, territories, and the District of Columbia. This room features the grandest centerpiece of the White House holiday season, an 18.5-foot Concolor Fir from Auburn, Pennsylvania. The Red Room projects the comfort, peace, and strength we find in faith, while the State Dining Room embodies the idea of “We the People’” as the promise of the next generation, featuring ornaments crafted as self-portraits by the students of the 2021 Teachers of the Year from across the country.

A menorah created by the Executive Residence Carpentry Shop was a new addition to the decor this year, made of wood removed from the White House in the 1950s during the Truman renovation. Finally, the 2022 Gingerbread White House adds a sugar cookie replica of Philadelphia’s Independence Hall alongside the White House replica. Both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed at Independence Hall.

Planning for the White House holiday theme began back in the spring, and Dr. Biden chose the theme by June. It always takes months of preparation to conceptualize and create a holiday display of this scale and prestige. Over the Thanksgiving holiday, more than 150 volunteers spent countless hours decorating the public rooms. The decor includes 77 Christmas trees, 83,615 holiday lights, 25 classic wreaths, and thousands of garlands, ornaments, and displays.

The annual White House gingerbread house is made of 20 sheets of sugar cookie dough, 30 sheets of gingerbread dough, 30 pints of chocolate, 100 pounds of sugary pastille, and 40 pounds of royal icing.

Van Hoff’s career as a textile artist began in early 2020 after a series of shocking life events pointed her in a new direction. Her husband Matt died unexpectedly in January, and then the pandemic cost her her job as a graphic designer and art director. To process her grief, Van Hoff turned to art, experimenting with new techniques that applied her graphic design background to physical objects. The things she made to fill her time during quarantine resonated with her followers on Instagram, and now, over two years later, her pieces sell out practically as soon as they’re posted online.

“Quilting and embroidery are my current tools of choice to execute my dreams of physical, tactile graphic design,” Van Hoff says. “This combination results in fresh and unexpected forms that will shine in your home and get you all the compliments as you wear them out into the world.”

Van Hoff’s “squiggle quilts” are her most popular works, ranging from 18 to 30 inches wide and up to 40 inches tall. Not only do they bring a graphic punch of color to any room they’re in — they also have a textural element that adds a little bit of extra visual interest. Stuffed pillows in surprising shapes like eight-pointed stars and “noodles” are also big hits. Van Hoff applies her skills to wearable art, too, producing items like quilted dresses, tote bags, and giant patches to customize your favorite garments.

“One of my favorite things is finding the absolute perfect piece that fully expresses the personality I want for my home and wardrobe,” she explains. “It’s exceedingly rare, but when I do stumble across that perfect thing, it’s like meeting a brand new bff. That’s why I make what I make: to provide you that thrill of discovery.”

A recent residency at the Pendry Chicago boutique hotel produced an intriguing variation on Van Hoff’s signature style. The artist drew inspiration from the Art Deco architecture of the landmark Carbon & Carbide building where the hotel is located, producing a new wall hanging in a nuanced palette of green and gold fabric.

“This is the first event where people are able to see my work in person, which is very exciting,” Van Hoff told Chicago’s ABC 13 News. “I wanted to figure out how to incorporate some Art Deco details of the building into my designs and into my quilting.”

Van Hoff’s success is part of a larger trend celebrating traditional arts and crafts. The tufted rug TikTok craze and techniques like quilting and embroidery offer new ways for young people to express their creativity.

“I do think that sewing and quilting are having a bit of a comeback right now,” she says. “I think we’re all sort of drawn to very tactile, textural things in our digital world.”

So how does one transform their home into a daring (but not clownish) version of a carnival without splurging on an actual midway or Delevingne-esque ball pits? Dani Dazey’s eye-popping interior decor has been a big hit on TikTok for a while now, but she got an even bigger boost after serving as the primary designer of Trixie Motel. Her process of custom-creating all of the decor for drag queen Trixie Mattel’s renovated Palm Springs resort was documented on the 2022 Discovery+ reality series Trixie Motel. Dazey certainly isn’t new to attention-grabbing designs, so it’s no surprise that Hidden Valley chose her to bring their concept to life.

Dazey told Today that she thought her style was perfect for the collaboration. “I could not believe it when Hidden Valley Ranch asked me to design a home collection for their brand because I’m such a huge fan,” she said, adding that the “bold flavor” of the dressing matches her design aesthetic. In this case, “maximal design meets maximum flavor.” Dazey drew from influences like Andy Warhol and his famous Campbell’s soup can when coming up with her graphic prints.

“We enlisted Dani Dazey for her colorful and bold designs,” says Deb Crandall, Hidden Valley Ranch’s Marketing Director. “In addition to the pieces Dani Dazey designed, Hidden Valley Ranch extended the home collection with even more items designed with even more ranch because when it comes to ranch, more is always better.”

What are Gypsum Ceilings?

Commonly used in commercial settings like offices, gypsum ceilings used to consist mostly of solid square tiles interspersed with fluorescent lighting. Today, gypsum ceilings come in all kinds of different shapes, many of which are custom-crafted to fit a particular space. Though they’re made of the same materials, gypsum ceiling tiles are often on the thinner side compared to wallboard, so they’re lighter and easier to hang.

Old-fashioned gypsum ceiling tiles can still be found at hardware stores like Home Depot, but manufacturers like Gyprock and USG make tiles specifically designed for contemporary applications. Fitted to custom-made framework systems, they can be crafted into interesting curves and layered for a collage-like effect that adds architectural interest. They’re still a great way to conceal elements like built-in lighting and HVAC systems, and they can be integrated with other materials like wood for creative results.

How to Create Contemporary Gypsum Ceiling Tiles and Designs

Gypsum ceilings are usually installed below the original ceiling of the room. The process is similar to standard wallboard and drywall suspension systems, but it tends to require more precision and a higher level of finish to get good results. The joints are finished with paper joint tape embedded with joint compound before being treated with a special ceiling compound for the final coats. The surface is then coated with a spray-applied finish, and you can paint it any color you like. All the components are designed to work together as a system.

While a very experienced DIYer might be able to craft their own custom gypsum ceiling, it’s a job better left to professionals, especially when it comes to the framework. What’s the Difference Between Gypsum and Drywall?

The terms gypsum, drywall, and sheetrock are often used interchangeably. Gypsum is a naturally occurring mineral called hydrous calcium sulphate and is often used to create wallboard. It’s naturally heat and flame-resistant, soundproof, and typically comes in sheets of varying thicknesses from ¼ to ⅝ inch.

Gypsum is also the primary material used to create plaster and Plaster of Paris, which can be formed into decorative appliqués, trim work, and medallions. When applied to flat drywall ceiling surfaces, these ornate sculpted elements are also sometimes called “gypsum ceilings.” Armstrong is one brand currently using gypsum to create amazing ornate plasterwork ceilings.

Drywall, on the other hand, is made by pressing a gypsum plaster core between two pieces of heavy paper and then kiln-drying it to create a rigid material. Introduced as an alternative to labor-intensive lathe and the plaster walls and ceilings of the 1960s, it has since become one of the most popular interior finishing materials in the world. Sheetrock is simply a specific brand of drywall, but it’s come into colloquial usage as a synonym, much like “Kleenex” for tissues and “Band-aid” for bandages.

The founder of UK-based design studio Chairbox came up with the idea while lying on the floor with his legs on a couch. He wondered whether dying in this pose would require burying him in a special seated coffin (if you’re curious, the answer is that morticians have a different way of dealing with rigor mortis: massaging the corpse to loosen the stiff muscles). This thought process led the designer to mull the symbolism of a seated coffin.

As you’re probably aware by now, sitting kills. Researchers have linked sitting for long periods with health concerns like obesity, increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, deep vein thrombosis, diabetes, and stroke. It might even make you more likely to get dementia and various types of cancer. Sitting for six to eight hours a day can even undo the beneficial effects of exercising when you’re off the clock.

“Another issue is exploitation,” Chairbox says. “While we spend most of our time at work most of us can’t afford some basic things. The gap between rich and poor is growing exponentially. What’s shocking is that it’s widely accepted by society, it became a norm that we spend our lives at work slowly killing ourselves and getting almost nothing out of it. The whole grind culture is just wrong, it feels to me like voluntary slavery. We’ve been gaslit into thinking that this is the life as it suppose to be. We sit in those coffins and generate value for the stakeholders, but once the time has come they nail the lid and roll us to the corporate cemetery.”

The design is meant to prompt a little internal investigation into what we’re doing with our lives, and whether working in offices for employers who don’t value us as human beings is really worthwhile. After all, you could spend your entire adulthood proving what a great asset you are by working overtime, rarely taking sick days or vacations, and putting your employer over your family just to die or get dementia shortly after retirement (if you even make it that far). Meanwhile, another worker drone would be ready to take your place as if you never existed.

Maybe a change in career is the answer for you. Maybe it’s just a standing desk, or a seat that forces you to actively use your muscles while working. Some great options include the rounded Rodeo Chair, which can actually strengthen your spine with enough use; so-called “active stools,” or even just yoga balls that force you to balance yourself the whole time you’re sitting; or designs like the ZestDesk, which allows you to bring a portable standing desk wherever you go.

Barbiecore became a trending hashtag on TikTok earlier this year, and a quick look around will tell you it involves a whole lot of pink (and the brighter the better). Valentino’s Fall ’22 Ready to Wear collection highlighted a very specific shade of pink that has become emblematic of Barbiecore, called “Valentino Pink PP” after the fashion house’s creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli. Verging on magenta, this neon hue is impossible to ignore, and used alone, it could be a bit much. For interiors, Barbiecore enthusiasts often layer different shades of pink for a slightly softer effect.

Decorating Your Dream House

For inspiration, start with the source. Barbie’s actual Dream House has evolved many times since its first debut in 1962, but since the 1980s, it has typically featured at least four shades of pink, often accented by white, purple, and turquoise. It’s never crammed full of stuff, so despite the loud colors, it doesn’t feel too chaotic. Accent pieces like overstuffed armchairs, chandeliers, and playful wallpaper patterns make a big impact. But I’m so happy the tide is turning. Pink is such a wonderful color, and I love that more people are embracing it. Like how could I not be happy every time I walk onto my pink porch? The new pieces are being showcased in a campaign called “A Garden of Delights,” itself an homage to the quintessential English garden. Complete with immaculately shaped hedges in the form of tea cups, lamps, and armchairs, the setting blends seamlessly with the actual collection to create a true garden of Earthly delights.

The Alice in Wonderland-like fantasy garden was created by Andy Hillman Studio, while the whole dreamy scene was captured beautifully by visual artist Max Siedentopf. But the real brainchild behind the sumptuous scene was undoubtedly Michele, who has proven yet again that the iconic Italian brand isn’t afraid to push the envelope with their dynamic style choices. The new textile and wall-covering collection from designer Catherine Martin is just the latest reminder of Presley’s continuing influence. Dubbed the “Royal Menagerie,” the collection was made for the luxe brand Mokum, itself a division of James Dunlop Textiles.

The set designer for the new movie Elvis, Martin’s vision is a sumptuous and gloriously maximalist exploration of plush, bold fabrics and eye-popping patterns — the height of 1970s opulence. The designs capture signature sights from Elvis’ world-famous Graceland home in Memphis and reimagine the lavish suite he occupied during his famed Las Vegas residency in 1969 at what was formerly the largest hotel/casino in the world, the International Hotel (now the Las Vegas Hilton).

Upon seeing the Royal Menagerie, one can almost imagine him lounging amidst its velvety landscapes, with or without his blue suede shoes. Dominated by bold, bright botanicals and immersive patterns that even Elvis himself wouldn’t sneer at, Martin’s vision is full of depth and delightfully 1970s grandeur that is as showy and complex as Presley was himself, both as a performer and as a mainstay of the American cultural consciousness.

Of course, the designs were not only inspired by Elvis’ palatial home and Las Vegas suite. They also pay tribute to the king’s penchant for audacious, fashion-forward prints that defined his on-stage persona as much as his smooth, silky voice and gyrating hips. The “Panthera” pattern in particular, with its leopard print amidst a deep gold backdrop, is a chic homage to Presley’s distinctive duds.

Meanwhile, Graceland looms large as its colorful, stained-glass peacock windows are playfully evoked by “Royal Peacock” — fabrics and wallpaper prints dominated by green jungle hues. And don’t forget the ever-present deep shag carpeting, another iconic mainstay at Graceland.

Deep hues offset the rich textures of the fabrics and textiles, but the star of the show is definitely the plush patterns, which are pure Presley. As Martin, “a child of the 70s,” herself recently noted, “I have an affinity for pattern.” Indeed, just one look at the over-the top pieces featured in this collection is enough to satisfy any Elvis fan’s wildest dreams.
