The most impressive deals on Amazon tablets and e-readers are happening right now, so don’t wait! Here are some of the best you’ll find anywhere.

Deals Available Now

Amazon Fire HD 10 Tablet – $74.99

Amazon’s newest, largest Fire tablet features improved performance, a redesigned body, wireless charging, and an extra gigabyte of RAM compared to the previous model. On top of that, you can also choose to boost the storage capacity to 64GB. It’s definitely worthwhile to pay the $15 to eliminate ads on the device, but now’s the time to snatch it up at a base price of $74.99 (originally $149.99).

Amazon Fire 7 Tablet – $34.99

If you don’t mind a smaller tablet that was originally released in 2019, Amazon’s Fire 7 is currently available at a truly impressive discount – just $34.99 (compared to its usual $49.99 price). That’s probably the cheapest you’ll see a new brand-name tablet this year.

Apple just revealed all of its planned software updates for the year at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, and there’s something for every user to get excited about. WWDC21 gave us a glimpse at new platforms for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, smart home gadgets, and more. Features boosting security and privacy are at the top of the list, along with sleeker interfaces and upgraded functionality.

All of the new software will be released to the public this fall, just in time for fresh hardware drops like the anticipated iPhone 13, but developers have access to the updates now, with public beta tests expected to go live in July.

iOS & iPadOS 15

The next iOS will come with lots of fresh features, including bigger app icons, photos of your contacts on text notifications, and new filter modes called “Focus” that let you fine-tune groups of custom settings like “Work,” “Sleep,” and “Do Not Disturb” according to how reachable or distractible you feel like being at any given moment. Photos shared in iMessage will be grouped into collages or stacks in your photo gallery or memories, and a new feature called LiveText will use AI to digitize any text in your images so you can copy and paste it.

The new iPadOS 15 will let you add widgets to the home screen and introduce a new “Shelves” feature that will show open windows within an app, making multitasking a lot easier. A new “Swift Playgrounds” app will also make it possible not just to learn how to code but build apps and submit them to the App Store.

FaceTime Upgrades

Soon, the days when you could only FaceTime with other Apple users will be a distant memory. Android users will also be able to participate in video calls via shareable links, so nobody in the family or friend group needs to be left out of the fun. Portrait mode-style blurring will eliminate distracting backdrops behind your head, voice isolation will help reduce background noise, and spatial audio will change where sound seems to come from based on the speaker’s location on your screen. Users will also be able to share music and video during FaceTime calls using SharePlay.

More Functions for macOS Monterey

Apple’s next big MacOS update will offer many of the same features debuting on the iPhone, like the enhanced FaceTime features and Focus notification filters, but we can also expect Universal Control, which will let Mac users transfer content between a Mac and iPad using a single mouse and keyboard. That means you could seamlessly drag and drop something like an image between your iMac, MacBook, and iPad in a single motion, an ability that’s been sorely missing. Look for some helpful additions to Safari, too, like tab groups to organize all your open tabs.

New Privacy and Security Features

Continuing its bid to position itself as more privacy-focused than competitors like Google, Apple will soon begin obscuring the IP addresses of its users on the Mail App and Safari, so companies won’t be able to identify and track you based on your activity. You’ll also be notified anytime an app uses features like the camera, microphone, or address book.

With the new iCloud Plus, you’ll be able to create obscured email addresses to hide your personal info with “Hide My Email,” shield your clipboard data from other apps with “Secure Paste,” log into sites across the internet using Face ID or Touch ID instead of passwords, and more easily erase all your personal data with a single click.

Health and Accessibility

Need to keep tabs on the health of your kids, elderly parents, or other family members? You’ll soon be able to share data from the Health app with chosen contacts, including heart rate and movement data. Even better, alerts for events like falls or long periods of inactivity can be sent directly to the phones of caregivers. The as-yet-unreleased Apple watchOS 8 will also have some cool new health features, like a Mindfulness app, new workout types in the Fitness app, and the ability to track your respiratory rate while sleeping.

For those with hearing difficulties, the new AirPods Pro will include a “Conversation Boost” feature that isolates the voice of the person closest to you and reduces background noise. You’ll also be able to see exactly where your AirPods are at all times with enhanced “Find My” abilities.

That’s not all — there are also new features coming to Siri, Wallet, and more. To learn about them all, check out the video recaps Apple created for days one, two, and three of WWDC21.

The post New Privacy Features, iOS 15, and More Revealed at Apple’s WWDC 2021 first appeared on Dornob.

We all need a little help now and then, and that may never be more true than it is when it comes to preparing meals. Now, a new all-in-one product by CookingPal called Julia could be the kitchen assistant you’ve been dreaming of. While she can’t offer life advice, she’s a true partner in all things related to cooking, including teaching you new techniques, cooking a variety of different ways, and even helping to clean up when dinner’s over.

Julia has multiple features that are sure to come in handy during the prep and cooking phases of your favorite meals. She can weigh your food for accuracy with a built-in scale and measuring cup. Then you can tap into the chopping feature, which will save you the mess of a separate cutting board and knife. If chopping’s not cutting it, Julia can also grind or blend your ingredients.

Once the food is all inside her three-liter stainless steel bowl, just ask Julia to knead, boil, steam, or grill it for you. You choose the settings, she does the cooking. That includes whisking or emulsifying as necessary, too, although some tasks do require additional accessories. But even with those components, Julia is still compact enough to keep readily available on the counter, so you won’t ever have to worry about finding enough cupboard space for her.

She’s undeniably handy at doing her share of the cooking, but Julia can also make you a better cook by providing step-by-step instructions for you to follow. On top of that, she comes with a separate tablet screen that allows you to control the cooking unit, find and adapt recipes, give voice commands, and monitor your meal through a central hub.

Never cooked okra before? Just ask Julia for recipes. Not sure what to have for dinner? Julia is your go-to girl. Listen from the two speakers as she guides you through the required steps and you watch on the screen, which itself can be angled for easy viewing with a built-in table stand. You can also use the camera to take Instagram-worthy pictures as you cook.

Julia even makes it easy to monitor dinner while you work in the garden or wash the car. From anywhere in the house, you can use the hub or remote control to check the temperature of meat or see how long until dinner is ready.

CookingPal knows that sometimes figuring out what’s for dinner is the biggest challenge of the process, so Julia is even equipped with AI technology to come up with a meal plan for you — simply provide access to the ingredients you have on hand, taking a picture with the hub camera and allowing Julia to use food-recognition software to recommend meal options based on those ingredients. When you run low on ingredients, you can use her integrated online shopping and delivery feature.

The trend for healthy living has been on the rise for decades now, particularly gaining momentum by leaps and bounds in the 21st century. One of the last places to be untouched by it is the home, but the new DARWIN Wellness System is poised to change that by making it easier than ever to monitor the air, lighting, and water quality in it.

The Company

Back in 2012, Delos launched its real estate company in New York. What made them unique was their “wellness real estate” focus. Their mission was clear: to improve the quality of home living by monitoring and controlling the elements that keep people healthy: air, water, and lighting.

The DARWIN system (aka DARWIN Home Wellness Intelligence) was formally launched in Sydney, Australia in the fall of 2019. The system includes lighting that imitates natural light patterns in homes along with sensors and filters that identify and eliminate impurities in the air and water.

How It Works

The home environment is monitored by DARWIN on a tablet similar to an iPad. The Wi-Fi-dependent system displays several metrics gathered through air quality sensors and filters that perceive and eradicate impurities like pollution and smoke from the home. On top of that, the system’s water purifiers eliminate chlorine, heavy metals, and other negative elements from the home’s tap water.

Light is also a major component in health maintenance, with natural light patterns playing a big part in overall human wellness. DARWIN’s lighting component is designed to replicate natural light patterns, with blackout shades that are programmed by residents to bathe the home in natural light at a specific time each morning and slowly dim each evening.

Paul Scialla, CEO of Delos, explains that the lighting system was designed to offset the negative effects of humans spending too much time inside. “We’re indoors for most of our lives,” he says. “And while we may not be able to change that, DARWIN gives you the ability to change your environment.”

Spreading the Word

Delos chose Australia to debut the DARWIN System for practical reasons. Beth McGroarty, the Research Director for the Global Wellness Institute, says: “Australia is a trailblazer in wellness real estate and started taking it seriously almost two decades ago, before it was a worldwide trend.” Delos teamed up with Simonds and Lateral Estate, two Australian real estate developers, for the project. Today, DARWIN-enhanced properties are on the market in the outer reaches of both Sydney and Melbourne.

According to Global Wellness Institute statistics, wellness real estate is a $134 billion market worldwide and is estimated to increase to almost $200 billion by 2022. Australia’s market share is valued at $9.5 billion, making it the third largest on Earth behind the United States and China.

Delos’ projects in Australia also include lower-cost and luxury properties. They joined forces with Simonds, a major homebuilder, on lower-priced residences in the state of Victoria and several suburbs in the Melbourne region. Lateral Estate is also currently offering DARWIN-enhanced luxury apartments in a Sydney suburb for prices ranging from $550,000 to $1.4 million.

The post Futuristic DARWIN Wellness System Creates Healthier Homes first appeared on Dornob.

With the new school year on the horizon, students are slowly starting to dust off their laptops and anticipate new challenges. But aside from more powerful, faster, and lighter portable PCs out there, there are some other really cool new gadgets that make learning easier and more fun.

Livescribe 2GB Echo Smartpen

Think your head will explode trying to catch every word of a lecture? With this nifty tool, you can rest easy knowing you won’t miss a thing. The Echo Smartpen records everything you hear and write and automatically saves it to your computer. It also comes complete with software for Mac or Windows, a 50-page Starter Notebook, two ink cartridges, and a micro USB cable to transfer data and keep your pen charged. The pen is so compact (6.8 inches long) it fits in your pocket, so you’ll have no problem taking it around and recharging in between classes.

Astrohaus Freewrite

If you enjoy taking notes but hate the bulk of a tablet, Freewrite is the tool for you. It’s a word processor that connects with the Cloud, so whatever you type is automatically saved. Whether you’re taking notes in Psych 101 or composing iambic pentameter for poetry class, this tool allows you to write on with the confidence that nothing will be lost. The Freewrite’s advanced e-ink screen is clear even on sunny days, too, so you can relax on the beach while you compose if you so please. The battery life lasts for over a week with regular use, so there’s no need to constantly recharge either.

ThirdEye Gen X1 Smart Glasses

Many lecture halls are massive, so if you’re not in the front few rows, it’s difficult to see formulas on the board or other visual aids used by educators. Slip on a pair of these Smart Glasses, and you’re guaranteed to have the best view in the room. These spectacles transform your view to one comparable to viewing a 90-inch screen from a distance of 10 feet, with a whopping 13 megapixels making sure that everything is clear as crystal. If necessary, the X1’s photochromatic lenses can also be replaced with prescription ones.

Garmin vívosmart 4

No matter how many gadgets and tools you bring to a classroom, you always have to be of sound mind and body to maximize learning. vívosmart helps keep you on track. Besides offering standard info like daily steps and exercise, notifying you of medication and supplement schedules, and tracking the number of calories you’ve burned, the device also keeps track of your sleep quality, stress levels, and pulse oxygenation. Before you head out the door for an all-night session, the compact vívosmart can tell you if it might be better to chill and relax at home.

TI-84 Plus CE

Of course, there’s more to education than writing and listening, especially if your passion is math, science, or engineering. The Plus CE graphing calculator displays connections between data, equations, and graphs in full color and includes graph lines for easy reading. The 2019 model is also 30-percent thinner and lighter than past versions, and is ideal for Use for Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II, Trigonometry, Statistics, Business & Finance, Biology, Chemistry, Geometry, Precalculus, College Math, and Linear Algebra.

Wireless charging is cool and all, but up until now, it’s required either a bulky, less-than-attractive desktop charging pad or expensive custom furniture with built-in charging capabilities. Wouldn’t it be nice if the charger could just hide beneath your work surface instead of hogging precious space on top of it? A stealthy new option brings that possibility to the table (literally) with surprising ease. You can even charge right through the thickest of phone cases, which is a definite upgrade from most of the wireless chargers that are currently on the market.

The Archon Wireless Charger crowns itself “the future of charging,” with a virtually invisible design that clings to the underside of tables and other surfaces so you can simply set your phone on top and watch that green progress bar creep toward 100 percent. Making its debut on Kickstarter and Indiegogo to raise funds for production, the Archon claims that it will be capable of charging a long list of compatible devices through wood, plastic, glass, quartz, and even granite.

As with any other charger, it won’t work through metal or magnets, so phone cases designed to work in tandem with magnetic car mounts are really the only ones that aren’t compatible with it. Just remember that ordinary wireless charging pads can’t do any of that — plus they almost always have cords of their own and bright blinking lights that can be irritating in dark rooms.

This potentially game-changing wireless charger comes in two models: one that can charge through tables as thick as 25 mm, and a “long-range” option that works with surfaces measuring up to 35-mm thick. It’s compatible with the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X, XS, XS Max, and XR, as well as a host of Android-based phones like the Samsung S6 and Galaxy Note 9, Google’s Nexus 4, 5, and 6, and over a dozen LG phones. Any device that works with Qi wireless charging should also work with the Archon, which supports fast charging output up to 10 watts on everything but Google Pixel 3 phones (though the company says it’s working on getting Google certification to enable faster charging on that model, too).

Measuring less than five inches at its widest point and weighing just 12 ounces, the charger tucks away almost imperceptibly beneath tabletops, though it’s not clear exactly how it adheres. Some sort of adhesive seems likely, given that the list of appropriate table surfaces includes materials that can’t be easily drilled into. In any case, it’s a far more minimalist option than most, and at a $59 preorder price tag ($69 retail) for the 25mm and $79 ($89 retail) for the 35mm, it’s probably well worth a bit of experimentation. Orders are expected to officially begin shipping in May 2019.

The company website reads: “It doesn’t matter if you have a pop-socket or the thickest case on the planet, Archon can wirelessly charge your phone through it. Not only that, but with our ultra long range 35-mm version, you can charge your phone wirelessly through a tabletop and a case. Archon is everything that you love about wireless charging minus the annoying drawbacks. No more table clutter. No more bright lights. No more case compatibility issues.“

The post Archon: The Invisible Wireless Charger That Works Right Through Tabletops first appeared on Dornob.

Try as we might to work with the shortcomings of expensive smartphones, laptop computers, and other gadgets made of stiff, fragile materials, they just aren’t very practical for day-to-day life. While Apple’s iPhones just keep getting larger (and still primarily consist of glass), smaller companies are sailing headlong into the future with bendable, foldable gadgets that won’t crack into a million pieces when dropped.

Dornob got a chance to see Royole’s game-changing new technology in person at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), where the company founded by Stanford engineering graduates officially debuted its proprietary flexible sensors. Derived from their development of next-generation AMOLED flexible displays, this new sensor technology can be used for all sorts of things, from transportation and robotics to smart home items and consumer electronics. And yes — the implications of this tech in the latter category are just as exciting as they sound.

The mass-producible flexible sensor technology is extraordinarily sensitive and precise, supporting multi-touch gestures, bezel-less design, and low production costs while operating on “unbreakable” displays that are said to be as thin as butterfly wings.

Royole’s CES showcase included a booth full of flexible touchscreen sensors that bent to mimic the contours of tiny robots, flexible display speakers for home entertainment and security, tablets, phones, and even clothing and accessories, making screens more or less seamlessly wearable for the first time ever. Sometimes renderings over-promise, but we can confirm that these gadgets are really just as pliable as they appear in photos.

Company founder Bill Liu was on hand to highlight the talk of the convention: the world’s first commercial foldable smartphone that’s actually a phone and a tablet in one. This “Flexpai” makes use of Royole’s Flexible+ platform technologies and boats a 7.8-inch AMOLED screen made of plastic with a 1440p resolution. A hinge along the back of the device lets you fold the entire thing in half. When it’s closed, you can use the Flexpai like a standard smartphone. Open it just a little bit, and it stands up on its own. When fully open, it blows the display size of other smartphones out of the water, yet it’s far more portable than standard tablets.

The FlexPai runs on a custom OS called Water (an extension of Google Android 9.0), and it boasts a fingerprint scanner, 16-megapixel wide angle camera, and a 20-megapixel telephoto lens. It’s also got a 2.8GHz octacore Snapdragon chipset and a 3,800mAh battery that can be juiced up rapidly thanks to Royole’s proprietary Ro Charge technology.

“Royole’s Flexible+ technologies have squarely put us in a leadership position in today’s ever-evolving consumer technology industry,” says Michael Williams, Royole’s Senior Director of Marketing.

“We are currently working with over 220 business partners worldwide to implement flexible displays and sensors in a variety of products that will reshape the world of consumer technologies.”

The smartphone is already available in China, with shipments expected to the United States and United Kingdom in the coming months.

Samsung’s new foldable smartphone hopes to simply life for consumers by giving them all one less device to worry about. The company is branding the Infinity Flex Display, or Flex, as a cross between a standard phone and a full-sized tablet.

When the Flex was unveiled in November 2018 at the Samsung Developer Conference, the presentation lights were dimmed to conceal the details of the phone’s design. Going to such lengths to protect its secrecy may have seemed melodramatic to those in the room, but Samsung has good reason to be cagey: they’re trying to be the first to go to market with a foldable device, working tirelessly to do outdo competitors like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Lenovo.

Working in conjunction with Google, the company hopes to start mass producing the Infinity Flex Display sometime in early 2019. It’ll run exclusively on an Android operating system, retaining the convenient size of a smartphone while equipped with all the multifunctional qualities of a tablet. Android will be building APIs that will allow users to operate several apps simultaneously and manage the difference in resolution between the device’s two configurations.

“We’re giving people the ability to run up to three apps simultaneously,” explained Justin Denison, Samsung’s Senior Vice President of Mobile Product Marketing, at the conference. “No swapping between apps, no closing one app to get to another. Just multitasking as it was meant to be. We call it Multi-active Window.”

The screen itself consists of a flexible backplane, protective coating, ultra-thin polarizer, shock-absorbent film, and cover display. The company explains that “the cover display is a fully functioning touchscreen that allows you to use your apps without opening the device. If you want a bigger screen, you simply unfold it to reveal the full 7.3-inch display.”

“We had to invent a new protective layer, in this case an advanced composite polymer that’s both flexible and tough,” added Denison at the conference. “We had to find a new type of malleable adhesive that [would] allow us to laminate the display layers together securely while enabling them to flex.”

Not only is Samsung working on a foldable smartphone, but they’re also looking at other ways to make their other devices more flexible for consumers, with an innovation pipeline that’s purported to include “rollable and even stretchable displays.”

In the coming weeks, the company plans to release an emulator APK to help developers test their apps for the Flex platform.

It’s interesting to see this device being labeled a “foldable smartphone” when in reality it’s more of a tablet that folds up into a phone. Either way, consumers are sure to be happy about having one less device to charge and maintain. Having the option to use the full tablet when needed but a smaller screen for quick and easy functions is something that everyone can get behind.

The post Could Samsung’s Foldable Smartphone Make Life Easier? first appeared on Dornob.

For over ten years, there was a rumor going around that books were dying in the digital age. Because of everything that was happening around us, that rumor seemed true. Bookstores like Borders, Ballenford Books in Toronto, and a swath of other independent booksellers were closing left and right. Simultaneously, e-books read on Kindles and tablets seemed like they were only going to keep increasing in popularity.

Nevertheless, books persisted. According to some articles, their death was “greatly exaggerated.” The New York Times even ran an essay chronicling the death of the book across the ages, thereby mocking the many proclamations of their demise. Now, e-book sales are decreasing while those of physical books are on the rise. While it could just be a sign of the much-written-about tech backlash that has us yearning for all things analog, some independent bookstores are certainly taking advantage of this new boom.

Some believe they are witnessing the resurrection of the book. For others, the book never died, nor will it ever. For most designers, however, the book is an essential ingredient that informs the way they think and the things they produce.

In 2011 (the same year Borders went out of business), Designers & Books (DB) started a community where creative professionals could come together and share their passion for books. They published book lists by iconic designers revealing the books that they had read during the formative years of their careers, books that changed their lives, and the many books that they were reading in the present day. From fashion to graphic design, product development to architecture, DB proves that designers are what they read. It has also become a hub for writers, critics, publishers, and bookstores to find and sell books in a community that celebrates design-based literature.

Every week between March 2011 and August 2016, DB published book lists by design professionals everywhere, including those by four deans of schools of architecture, the designers at Pentagram, car designers, designers of hotels and restaurants, and many more. The site also curates themed book lists, which are categorized by industry, and suggested book lists, which contain selections that every product/graphic designer should read.

With a very active social media presence, it’s safe to say that DB makes it onto the news feeds of those who like design and books. And it’s not just the content of a book that matters, but also the design of its cover. On a shelf, a collection of books reads like the visual story of one’s life and a map of one’s mind. The scent of a new book (unsoiled by dust) is as appreciated by book enthusiasts as the smell of a new car by car nuts. The feel of a new book, its pages crisp and cutting, is also still a great experience. Yes, a digital device can hold thousands of e-books, but the experience of using it cannot compare to that of holding an actual book. That is why the book will never die.

Despite the convenience of e-books, people like seeing the books that have given them insight displayed on shelves, both at home and in the office. Designers, like everyone else, like referring back to them when they need to because they are a visual testimony of their life paths.

The post Why Books Have Survived the Digital Age first appeared on Dornob.
