Not too long ago it would have sounded like futuristic science fiction, but here it is – the world’s most expensive luxury bed that is not suspended but, instead, is tethered to the ground so it does not simply drift up and away.

Seven years of study went into the development process of the permanent, non-degrading magnetic support system for this seven-figure sleeping platform. The bed frame itself is a simple rectilinear board, painted black, that appears to hover on invisible legs.

As the old argument goes: if you are going to spend a third of your life lying on something, you might as well make it something nice. Since it can hold up over fifteen hundred pounds, well, weight will not pose a problem for most people.

To be fair, it is worth questioning the real value in such an expensive solution. How is this floating magnetic bed so fundamentally different from a normal bed – or a hanging, water or other specialty sleeper? And what is it about that experience that makes the design worth as much as a mansion? Perhaps it is just another plaything for the rich, for now at least, but who knows … as technology evolves maybe it will be a teenage fad ten years from now, too. What the military did for flight, architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars may just do for the sleep (or entire furniture) industry. Maybe.

Made of poplar laminate sourced from Spain as well as spruce bed slats and powder-coated carbon steel for the mechanical elements, the bed comes in a single contemporary light wood color. You can even set it to “lock mode” if you want to make sure no mischievous kids or accidental wake-words activate it to raise or lower unexpectedly. A continuous monitoring system watches for potential failures, and the firmware automatically stays up to date.

The Cloud Bed is just the latest brilliant space-saving furniture system from Ori. Researchers have found that the warmth, pressure, and sense of security provided by weighted blankets could in fact prompt the brain to release more serotonin, the “happiness hormone,” along with melatonin, the hormone that promotes sleep and helps regulate the sleep cycle. Deep touch pressure can also help decrease nighttime levels of cortisol, the stress hormone linked to regulating blood pressure and the metabolism, thereby helping reduce inflammation and assisting with the creation of new memories.

These effects can be particularly useful to people with insomnia, depression, anxiety, autism, and sensory processing disorder, but just about anyone can benefit from them.

Weighted blankets usually consist of textiles filled with plastic pellets for an evenly-distributed weight ranging from five to 30 pounds total. All that material on top of you might sound great in winter when you could use the extra warmth, but what happens when hot weather arrives? A company called Hush says they have a solution. Their “Hush Iced” weighted blanket is specially designed for summer with cool-to-the touch fabric that wicks away sweat.

Incorporating the same advanced weight distribution and special short threading used to create their original weighted blanket, Hush has modified the fabric of the Iced’s cover just enough to make sure you don’t have to give up the blanket’s benefits for the warmer half the year. It’s also great for people who are just hot sleepers all around, even when it’s below freezing outside.

They explain: “Hush Iced is unique in that it provides a cooler way to reap the benefits of weighted blankets. Did you know that when you’re getting ready to take a snooze, your body temperature decreases to initiate sleep? Science shows that room temperature should be between 68 and 72 degrees for the optimum sleep benefits. Hush Iced can help you get there by preventing you from overheating, even during the nastiest heat wave.”

The Hush Iced blanket is available in three different weights: 15 pounds for people whose body weight is between 100 and 170 pounds, 20 pounds for people with a body weight between 171 and 240 pounds, and 25 pounds for those weighing 241 pounds and up. If you’re getting a queen-sized blanket for two people, Hush recommends going for the class above your own individual one.

The blanket is available in heather gray, and its cover is made of “proprietary fabrics” along with a bamboo and cotton blend. Inside, it’s made from things like microfiber, “non-toxic glass sand,” and cotton.

Due to the high safety standards of the aviation industry, even minor damage to certain parts is enough grounds for them to be scrapped. Rather than allow these pieces to be stripped and broken down in a scrap yard, Craviations takes them and worsens the damage to make them all more distinctive. Their aviation-inspired creations offer a certain charm to those who love planes and unique furniture.

For over two decades, Mike and Carolynn Rancourt have been running an aircraft structural repair company in Eastern Ontario, close to the Canadian capital of Ottawa. M.R. Airframe Ltd. fixes many types of aircraft, from helicopters to small airplanes and even large passenger models. They also make flight training devices and specialized equipment for machinists and technicians in the industry. Their years of experience and depth of knowledge regarding materials like titanium, stainless steel, aluminum, carbon fiber, fiberglass, aramid fibers, and honeycomb panels have given them countless ideas for unique furniture pieces.

Their first transformation was that of a helicopter-airframe-turned-bunk-bed. It can be placed over an existing queen bed, or the space under it can be utilized as a desk area. The user climbs into bed on a horizontal stabilizer placed at the back with slats that have been punched through to create small steps. The cockpit contains storage — and space for a monitor so kids can play their favorite video games.

When Craviations displays their products at design events and furniture expos (like they did in January 2019 at the Interior Design Show in Toronto), they usually attract visitors pulled in by curiosity. People are especially drawn to the Radome Lounger, which comes from the nose of a British Aerospace 146 and the aft section of a Canadian-made helicopter. It’s not the most comfortable chair you’ll ever sit it, but it is one of the most unique seats you’ll probably ever see. The mechanical aesthetic of other pieces, such as a turbine engine coffee table with cast metal and titanium sheeting, is charming for its simplicity. The helicopter gaming station, which can also be made into part of the bunk bed, is a quirky play space that would make a dream hideaway for any child.

Craviations have created many types of furniture and home accessories in the past, each with its own unique character. They make desks from landing gears, gear-top bar tables, sheet metal love seats, horizontal stabilizer coffee tables, main rotor blade candle holders, aft-section bird cage stands, gear transmission clocks, and polished aluminum benches. Regardless of the part or material, if it used to fly but has been permanently grounded, Craviations will find a way to keep it in use.

As fate would have it, it looks like those days will soon be upon us once again. Charles Hall, the creator of the original water bed, is determined to revive his iconic invention for the modern masses.

Back in 1967, when Hall was just a student at San Francisco State University, he stumbled upon flotation furniture as part of an assignment for his engineering class. That led him to showcase his much-talked-about “Pleasure Pit”: an eight-square-foot heated furnishing that harnessed the properties of both a bed and a chair. After receiving backlash from those ruling the interior industry, the innovator took to the streets and delivered his products to celebrities who were keen to be his guinea pigs.

Among these famous faces was Hugh Hefner, the American magazine publisher best known for founding Playboy. When approached by Hall, Hefner bought one of his water beds (and had it upholstered in green velvet) for the Playboy mansion. Because of the publicity that erupted from that particular buyer, Hall’s flotation furniture gained a very particular reputation — but he was still determined to make his audience see how the bed could positively impact their sleep experience and overall health.

So how exactly does a water bed contribute to a person’s well-being? According to Hall, the secret lies in its weightless motion, which enhances both sleep and personal comfort. On top of that, water beds eradicate the problem of ever housing dust mites and bed bugs, both of which can be nasty downsides to our standard home mattresses.

Water bed sales reached $2 billion in 1986, but by that point, Hall’s personal company was entering bankruptcy. Today however, he feels that has has learned from the newfound demand for “retro” products, which is exactly why he has developed a brand new water bed called “Afloat.” This queen-size model includes a heater, a filling up and draining kit, a canvas sling to help maneuver it, and a metal frame, retailing between $1,995 and $2,395.

Within its first few months on the market, Afloat completely sold out, though we’ve been promised that it will soon be available again online. The company guarantees a full refund to all customers within the first 100 nights, but Hall is optimistic that this open-minded millennial generation is going to fall in love with his quirky product pretty quickly.

Retail journalist Warren Shoulberg explains: “This generation doesn’t have the association that water beds eventually got as a place where lonely single men slept in hopes of luring young ladies into their homes. The other thing is that consumers have no idea what’s inside most mattresses. It’s all gobbledygook. It’s this great mystery, and the industry loves it that way. It thrives on that confusion. The water bed is simple. It’s a big bag that holds water.”

Sleep Number’s new smart bed 360 p5 is designed to not only help you have the best sleep possible, but also monitor your sleep and help you figure out how you might improve it. The mattress has a handy design centered around two air cavities located in the middle of the foam bottom layer, which allows each person on either side of the bed to control how soft or firm they want their side to be. This has been a feature of advanced mattress design for a while, but Sleep Number’s 360 p5 has gone one step further to include some snazzy new features that not only help you to control the comfort of your bed, but also monitor your sleeping patterns. Sensors built into the mattress’s body can detect your movements, your breathing, and even your heart rate. These data sensors are undetectable by the user of the bed, so once the technology is rigged up to your mobile app, you can go to bed safe in the knowledge that your mattress will be working for you through the night.

The smart technology in the mattress will give you a sleep score out of 100, and tell you how much restful sleep you had, when you got up, and when your sleep was less deep. Taken over a couple of days or weeks, it will allow you to trace any patterns of sleep, meaning you can think back over the day and see if there was anything in particular that might have led to a disrupted sleep that day. Drinking coffee or large amounts of liquid right before bed might result in taking longer to get to sleep, or waking up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. You might find that working out in the morning makes you sleep better than working out right before bed. You will be able to correlate stress patterns or dreams to restless sleep. The idea is that with this knowledge, you can change your daytime habits to influence your nighttime ones. Sleep Number’s 360 p5 will offer some tips on how to sleep better, and there are options to sync some of your fitness and health apps with the mattress app to allow you to get a more comprehensive picture of your daily and nightly routine. While the smart mattress will not exactly solve all your sleep problems, it can help you work towards a better, data driven slumber.

Originally launched on Kickstarter back in 2014, the BedJet is finally back, with a host of upgrades that are guaranteed to make your bed just the right temperature for optimal refreshing rest. As the name suggests, the BedJet essentially pumps temperature-controlled air between the sheets, and it even comes with a remote control (or an app, if you prefer to use your smartphone) for easy fine-tuning. Unlike electric blankets, there are no conductive wires involved here.

The unit itself fits under most beds, with its patented, acoustically dampened blower, ducting system, and outlet nozzle generating and directing a small cushion of air between the upper and lower bedsheets so as to create a tenting effect that allows the air to warm or cool the entire sleeping area. You can use the BedJet with your own bedding, and if your bed frame is too low to allow the unit to sit underneath, you can always purchase an optional stand.

“BedJet has taken a technological leap past sleep sensors that simply monitor and educate you on your prior night’s sleep,” explain its creators. “BedJet was the first product to use muscular bed climate control to hack into your body’s own natural pre-programmed circadian biorhythms to fundamentally alter what your body THINKS it should be doing while you are in bed.”

“Remember waking up in the middle [of the] night to kick the covers off because you were too hot, falling back asleep, and then waking up later too cold? That’s interrupted sleep and a reset to your deep sleep REM clock. It’s also your body not being allowed to achieve the right body core temperature for deep sleep and your brain making a manual adjustment.”

To make use of this feature, you simply enter your age, sex, and body type into the app. After that, the BedJet Biorythym Technology will create a custom sleep temperature profile that makes continuous climate control adjustments in your bed throughout the night. You can create your own profiles, too, experimenting with different ones as you go to see which one works best. There’s even a wake-up feature that lets you “bio-hack” wake-up time by subtly altering your body’s core temperature at the time of your choosing.

But the best part of the BedJet is its ability to create two separate pockets of air within one bed without requiring the sleepers to zip themselves up into individual cocoons. This optional dual zone setup works by way of “cloud” sheets: washable 100-percent paper cotton temperature layers with interior airflow cavities. The nozzles plug into inlets on either side of these sheets to give each sleeper total control over their side of the bed. When the unit is turned on, the sheets inflate, making them look like down-filled duvets.

Living spaces are also getting smaller, especially in urban centers, so furniture that transforms or serves more than one purpose is extra valuable. Why not take advantage of every available square inch of space? Beds, for example, typically hog the bulk of a room while being too low to the ground to offer much storage space underneath. Lucky for us all, a new design from Yeseul Jang, graduate of Ecole Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne (ÉCAL), is looking to fix that problem with a few simple tweaks.

The “Tiny Home Bed” is elevated on a platform to fit two levels of shelving underneath. Designed for students and other young people living in compact spaces or shared accommodations like dorms and group housing, the bed hides its built-in storage behind a pleated fabric curtain.

“Today, the number of people living in small dwellings is increasing due to limited housing capacity in urban spaces,” says Jang. “I have focused my project on the development of a storage bed for compact living. My objective was to develop a bed that was not only practical but also simple and aesthetically attractive because most of the space-saving furniture in the current market is quite massive and focuses on functional features such as foldable or transformable furniture.”

That gives the Tiny Home Bed not one but two major advantages: saving space while also being lightweight and easy to carry. It boasts a simple, airy wooden frame wrapped in polyester fabric that’s just large enough to fit a twin-sized mattress on top of. Underneath, there’s room for luggage, folded clothing, shoes, books, bins of personal care products, and whatever other items you like to keep handy. The curtain runs along a track system, and it can be opened almost all the way around to offer access from any angle.

The Tiny Home Bed also packs down small for moving, and it’s easy to assemble — two qualities Jang found crucial as she considered the lifestyle of her target customer. She cites the rise of single-person households in her native Seoul as inspiration for the project. Jang’s Master Course in Product Design at ÉCAL focuses on “the question of how design can soothe people with daily objects while maintaining the product value in markets from a business perspective.”

It’s easy to imagine a design like this becoming available at a retailer like IKEA in multiple sizes. After all, who doesn’t need more hidden storage space in the bedroom?

The designers behind Bundle Beds have removed all the anguish and made it incredibly easy to welcome house guests — or to take a comfy bed with you on your own travel adventures.

One Bundle Bed weighs just 14 pounds, so it’s quite easy to lug around. It includes a comfortable self-inflating mattress (good-bye foot pumps), a warm comforter and cover, a pillow and pillowcase, and a soft jersey cotton fitted sheet.

The bed will even work well on a sandy beach, as the cover is water-resistant, and you can take the whole thing apart to wash it if necessary. Of course, the company does recommend laying a ground cloth under the bed if you’re not going to be sleeping inside a tent. With any luck, this will help prevent sharp rocks or branches from puncturing your Bundle Bed.

If you come from a family of campers, you’ll be happy to know you can purchase different-colored beds so there are no mix-ups. There’s a gray model with teal straps and a matching teal duvet cover, a gray one with orange straps and duvet cover, and a navy bed with yellow straps and duvet cover. Every one of these colorways comes with a white and navy-striped pillowcase.

We’ve all seen those late-night infomercials for Sleep Number beds—you know, the ones that lift the head of the mattress to make you more comfortable while reading, and allow you and your bed partner to choose different comfort settings. Perhaps you, too, have spent a few post-midnight-refrigerator-raid moments watching the mattresses change position and adjust firmness at the push of a button.

But Sleep Number beds definitely aren’t a thing of the past. The technology gets more impressive with each passing year, and they’re clearly integral to a fully-equipped smart home.

Sleep Number unveiled its latest innovation at the CES 2017 trade show in Las Vegas, and it’s more intuitive and adaptive than ever. The 360 Smart Bed uses biometric sleep tracking to sense how you’re moving around at night, and what would make you the most comfortable. It’ll even detect snoring and elevate your head to stop it, and measure your quality of sleep through your heart rate, breathing, and how you toss and turn. Plus, a foot-warming area instantly makes climbing between the sheets more comfortable, even when it’s cold outside.

A sensor at the end of the bed transmits your biometric data to an app on your smartphone via Bluetooth, giving you a score in the morning that represents how well you slept. This “Sleep IQ” is pretty interesting in itself, especially for those of us who have trouble staying asleep throughout the night or getting what feels like restorative rest. Info points include the time you spent in bed, how long it took you to fall asleep and how much of your night was spent out of bed or moving around. You can set goals for the amount of time you’d like to spend sleeping, and experiment with settings that will help you fall asleep faster.

The bed responds to this data automatically, shifting and changing until it gets everything just right, with different settings for each side. The technology that accomplishes this is embedded into both the mattresses and bed bases, physically moving the mattress up and down and inflating or deflating air chambers to fine-tune your position.

On top of all that (literally) is a section of comfort padding that comes in a variety of options, depending on how luxuriously fluffy you like your mattress to be. The SleepIQ app can also connect the bed to other gadgets and apps, like Fitbits and Nest Thermostats, combining the data to give you new insight on how your physical activity and the temperature of your home affects your sleep.

It sees you when you’re sleeping—it knows when you’re awake. It might not be making value judgments on whether you’ve been bad or good, but it will bring you some gifts either way.

Naturally, all of this high-level sleep customization doesn’t come cheap; while Sleep Number hasn’t released pricing for its brand new smartphone-connected line just yet, its current mattresses range in price between $800 and $7,099, depending on quality and features. The 360 series will be available later this year.

Many of us move around a lot, and our needs for our living spaces evolve over time. That’s especially true for kids and teenagers. A set of furniture that works for you when you’re six probably won’t still work at sixteen—or will it?

With NOOK, a collaboration between designer Carlos Tíscar and furniture manufacturer JJP, there are virtually endless possibilities; it is a fully customizable bed that can transform into something new whenever you want.
