Celebrity invitees to the exclusive live-streamed debut received “black boxes” containing kits to build their own miniature Louis Vuitton-embossed wooden planes along with the invites, presented as Louis Vuitton-branded airline sick bags.

The presentation itself is a video inspired by “Stranger in the Village,” a 1953 essay by novelist James Baldwin, featuring Saul Williams wandering through a snow-covered landscape with embossed luggage in hand before entering a marble-clad set inside the Tennis Club de Paris (modeled after Mies Van Der Rohe’s iconic 1929 Barcelona Pavilion). Models chat on benches, casually lean against walls throughout the space as if they’re waiting for flights, or stride around with purpose, all showing off their ensembles in the process.

Notably featuring an unusually high number of Black models, the presentation also explores Abloh’s feelings about appropriation of Black culture. Performances include spoken word poetry by Williams and British poet Kai-Isaiah Jamal, whose poem includes the line “As Black people, and as trans people, and as marginalized people, the world is here for our taking, for it takes so much from us.” Rapper Yasiin Bey, better known as Mos Def, closes the show.

“In ‘Stranger in the Village,’ Baldwin draws parallels between his experiences as an African-American visitor in the Swiss mountain village of Leukerbad in the 1950s – the only person of color – and his life as a Black citizen of America,” the show keynotes read. “It deals with the experience of being recognized and gazed upon as different, illegible, even alien. Emblematic of this circumstance, ‘Stranger in the Village” also illuminates the experience of being Black in Europe, and being a Black artist in the birthplace of European art. The performance embodies the physical confrontations with the psychological conflicts explored in Baldwin’s essay.”

According to the keynotes, the figures we see include male archetypes such as “the Artist, the Salesman, the Architect, the Drifter, etc.” The collection, they say, asks, “Who can claim art? What defines low vs. high? Who gets to make art? Who gets to consume it?”

The clothes are as sharp as you’d expect from Abloh and Louis Vuitton, consisting mostly of crisp suits, puffer jackets, vibrant patterns, and silhouettes that bust gender norms, like skirts and pleated dresses. References to travel pop up all over, too, including oversized buttons and handbags shaped like planes.

None of the clothes are more dramatic than a pair of “wearable miniature cityscapes,” which blur the lines between sculpture and clothing. Crafted as detailed 3D models rendered in typical puffer jacket materials, they include the “Paris Skyline Puffer,” featuring monuments like the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, Louvre, and Arc de Triomphe, and the “New York City Skyline Puffer,” featuring skyscrapers from New York and other cities.

Abloh became Louis Vuitton’s Men’s Artistic Director in 2019. An artist, architect, engineer, creative director, and designer, Abloh completed a Master’s Degree in Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology in a curriculum founded by Mies van Der Rohe, an influence that comes through more clearly in this collection than perhaps any other in his career.

A new collection of bold, creative garments from Japanese designer Rie Sakamoto integrates fringe into various garments in surprising ways, all using the most unexpected of materials. “Rubber Collection” takes an object you’d never normally associate with fashion and uses it as the one and only component of a dress and shawl-style jacket: the humble rubber band.

Thousands of ordinary rubber bands are knitted together like more traditional fibers to create these ultra-stretchy orange garments. Sakamoto, a graduating student at Japan’s Tama Art University, knitted them all into panels that resemble coarse linen thread from afar.

A recent piece from Spoon & Tamago explains that: “For her thesis exhibition, she decided to turn her eyes to the lowly rubber band, a stationary item overlooked in contemporary design [that] values functionality and scarcity. Working entirely with rubber bands, which have limited functionality and are definitely not scarce, Sakamoto created a line of garments that were on display at an exhibition in Tokyo last week.”

Sakamoto says she realizes that the rubber band has more functionality than meets the eye, and that its underestimated aesthetic value is really only limited by our own imaginations. Out of a range of her “Rubber Collection” sketches, it looks like only two have actually become real garments, but they show off the designer’s premise with ease, and the fringed collar, armholes, and hemline are all nice touches.

The designer also notes that the material makes the garments highly versatile, since its unusual degree of stretch will enable them to fit on a wide range of body sizes and shapes. That’s definitely something we could use a lot more often in fashion — especially now that the archetypal stick-thin model showing off clothes that aren’t realistic for most people has finally grown stale.

Rubber bands are certainly a far cry from the sort of avant-garde materials rising in popularity among buzzy fashion designers like Iris Van Herpen, including 3D-printed filament, thermoplastics, LED lights, wearable technology, and even biotech materials more closely associated with medical innovations than clothing. But for Sakamoto, that appears to be part of the point. Rubber bands aren’t high tech. They aren’t particularly exciting. They aren’t exactly sexy, either, but they’re readily available all over the world, and in the right hands, they can be art.

One has to wonder, of course, how comfortable rubber band clothing really is, especially when you have body hair. Imagine all those rubber stitches grabbing hair all over your body and pulling at it — ouch! Still, “Rubber Collection” is a fun illustration of the fact that all sorts of overlooked materials already exist, and we just have to be creative enough to see their possibilities.

So it’s no surprise that heritage brands like Moncler, which were on the brink of bankruptcy not so long ago, are now enjoying a high fashion-influenced revival. In 2018, CEO Remo Ruffini introduced the attention-grabbing collaborative “Moncler Genius” platform, working with hip designers like Simone Rocha and Hiroshi Fujiwara to obliterate the stylistic boundaries of the puffer jacket. This year’s collections might be the wackiest yet.

British fashion designer Craig Green is among the eight designers selected to create capsule collections taking the Moncler puffer jacket in bold new directions, and his vision is wild. It basically looks like Green raided the ultralight backpacking section of REI and collaged as many down-filled items as he could into outrageously well-padded outfits. You can imagine just laying down in the grass, zipping up the hood, and going to sleep for the night.

Green’s collaborations with Moncler, now in their sixth season, have always been heavy on superfluous flaps and straps, but the 2020 collection is more conceptual than ever. The designer took inspiration from samurai armor and vivid inflatables to create a series of outfits that make their wearers look a bit like enormous exotic insects.

Many of these conceptual items extend well beyond the outlines of the body. It’s almost as if a bunch of backpackers used their sleeping bags for so long without washing them, they came to life, stood up, and started walking around. Many also feature tiny openings for the wearers’ faces. It all might be a bit bizarre, but you have to admit, it’s also pretty fun.

“I have always explored ideas of protection and functionality within my work, something that is also at the core of Moncler’s heritage. I thought it would be interesting for these ideas to be pushed further, interpreting Moncler’s performance-based history and developing designs with their years of technical knowledge and expertise,” says Green.

Of course, this is just how it goes with runway fashion; it’s more about a performance of wearable art than functionality. What you can actually buy on Moncler’s website is a lot more realistic in terms of wearability, but it still retains a bit of the conceptual edge. As you might expect, they include oversized puffer jackets with generous pillow-sized funnel necks and various hanging bits retailing for around $2,450.

Ultimately, this kind of compromise is what it comes down to. It wouldn’t be a terrible thing if designers like Green could push the brands that produce the most reliable, long-lasting, and functional clothing fit for adverse weather conditions to offer garments that are just a tad more fashionable.

At first glance, the Inner Expanse Infinity Coat is an ankle-length puffer jacket with a trench coat on top. From there, it separates down to three core pieces: a vest, a puffer jacket, and a trench coat, each of which you can wear in a variety of ways.

The jacket is so adaptable because it’s been well equipped with strategically-placed buttons and zippers. These elements allow you to transform it by simply adding or subtracting parts depending on the temperature or your mood. The hood and neck piece are also detachable, and you can zip the sleeves off and on to your liking. If you want to show off the puffer underneath, the trench coat can be backless. If you want the full coat, no problem. The beauty of the Inner Expanse Infinity Coat is that you can pretty much turn it into anything you want.

The coat is made out of wind-proof, water-repellent fabric and comes in two different color options. The first is a classic and subdued combination of black and true navy. The second is much more daring. Dubbed “Marvel,” “Honeycomb,” and “Candy Pink,” this jacket celebrates color with hues of vivid magenta, soft pink, and rich yellow. The puffer jacket is also reversible, with a different color on each side. Both color combinations offer adjustable and reflective cords, thumb holes in the sleeves, snap pockets, and side zippers for better mobility. One last cool feature: when you’re done wearing it, you can take it off and neatly tuck it into a pouch that’s actually inside one of its own pockets. Not much outerwear comes with that kind of built-in storage!

The Inner Expanse Infinity Coat is part of a larger collaboration between designer Roksanda Ilinčić and Lululemon. Ilinčić is a London-based fashion designer with a very successful self-titled brand. She studied architecture as an undergraduate and went on to receive her masters in womenswear. As a designer, she aims to make her clothing experimental but still comfortable and wearable.

The collaboration combines Roksanda’s “bold and feminine aesthetic” with Lululemon’s “technical innovation” to create fashion that is unique, unexpected, and functional. The jacket is one piece of a 16-item collection available on Lululemon’s website right now. The collection includes a duffle bag, sports bra, running shorts, and other assorted athletic wear. Some of the most uncommon pieces include water-repellent trousers and a “Technical Satin” skirt, both meant to be worn over your workout gear. The whole collection shares the same color palate and striking utilitarian style.

Buying this coat may alleviate the need to buy other jackets, but it will also do serious damage to your wallet. The coat retails for a whopping $998, but hey, high-fashion comes at a price, right?

That design won Time’s Best Inventions of 2018 award, Wired’s Gear of the Year prize, and even a victory at Fast Company’s Innovation by Design awards. And that was just the beginning for Vollebak.

The Butterfly Effect

In August 2018, Vollebak introduced the Blue Morpho Jacket. Its design was motivated by none other than the amazing shimmering wings of the Blue Morpho butterfly, which are covered with infinitesimal scales that reflect light to create an iridescent blue that continually changes color. The intensity of the hues makes the butterflies extremely visible — even to pilots flying a good half mile above the rainforest.

To mimic this natural phenomenon, the brothers covered the surface of their ski/snowboard jacket with 2 billion extremely reflective microscopic blue glass spheres, with a whopping 40,000 spheres in each square centimeter.

In passive light, the jacket appears to be a basic blue color. When it’s exposed to bright light, the glow passes through the curved surface of the glass spheres, reflecting directly back to the original light source and making the whole thing light up. The jacket’s surface can also change from flat matte blue to an intense Herculean blue in a nanosecond.

When a skier descends a slope, the jacket makes them appear to be warping and shifting. If the jacket is photographed with a flash in bright daylight, the image will appear as a liquid blue metal blur, with the face and body of the person wearing it disappearing completely.

In 2019, Vollebak introduced the Black Squid Jacket. Based on the qualities of actual squid skin, this 100-percent waterproof jacket replicates the camouflage effects of the underwater critter. This time, the 2-billion-plus microscopic glass orbs are embedded in resin on the exterior of the jacket. In simple daylight, it looks like a metal-infused oil slick. When exposed to intense light, the fabric reflects every color in the spectrum.

Steve Tidball explains: “The black squid jacket focuses on replicating the elements of squid skin that make it hyper-visible. While the squid uses microscopic plate-like structures on the surface of its skin to change color, our jacket uses disruptively-structured microscopic glass spheres.” This requires not only the glass spheres, but also three layers of fabric and resin.

This stylish outerwear isn’t stuffed with puffy feathers or layers of insulating fiber, though: the 8K collection actually offers a more high-tech solution to the winter chills. More specifically, the pieces put Flexwarm technology to toasty use, providing their wearers with evenly-distributed heat that can be adjusted via an accompanying smartphone app. Prefer more heat on your back? That can be easily arranged.

“Heating technology in clothing has been around for a while now, but this has always been primarily aimed at the workwear market,” says Scott Brenchley, 8K’s CEO. “We felt that there was a gap in the market for a collection of outerwear that seamlessly blends fashion with technology.” We agree.

The company says it’s “syncing technology with fashion,” and it hopes to turn both city folk and outdoor adventurers on to it’s newest line. That’s where the stylish tailoring will play a key role, as it’s responsible for making the pieces look and feel just as much at home on the subway as they would be on the hiking trail.

Part of 8K clothing’s versatility can be credited to its slimline design: bulk-free jackets mean active people can move about freely while shielding themselves from the harsh winter elements.

Flexwarm is a very thin (just a skimpy 0.5 millimeters) printable heating material that’s divided into three “heat zones,” any of which can be set to three different heat levels. The separate heating zones make it easier to target your cold spots and prevent you from overheating anywhere, and their levels can be adjusted on the fly. When you’re battling the cold, you’ll appreciate the line’s fast-acting heat system, which can reach temperatures of up to 50 degrees Celsius in just 360 seconds.

Of course, all this technology needs a power source. The clothes come with a 7500mAh power bank that can be used to charge your phone as well as your jacket, and the company says you can expect to get a good six hours of comfortable heating from a single charge (Flexwarm is reportedly 50 percent more energy-efficient than old-school carbon fiber heating systems). The power bank can also be stashed safely out of the way in one of the jacket’s inside pockets.

8K’s new jackets and vests all come in designs tailored to both men and women, and they are all machine washable. So if you love outdoor sports and happen to get a little muddy once in a while, there’s no need to freak out. The Flexwarm layer is so thin that it can actually be printed onto fabric, which makes it fine to wash (just remember to remove the battery pack first!). The clothes even come with their own wash and carry bag. A two-year warranty will give you even more peace of mind, no matter how you much you put your jacket through.

The company’s intuitive smartphone app makes heat control a total breeze. Just decide where you want to be warmer, select that zone on the app, and indicate exactly what temperature you want it to be. After that, simply shake your fist at winter and bask in the warmth of your cozy new jacket.

The brand is drawing on The Empire Strikes Back to create a new ready-to-wear trio of jackets and parkas that look as good off-screen as they do on-screen. The pieces in the “Echo Base Jackets” collection will no doubt be coveted pieces of memorabilia, especially considering the fact that there are only 1,980 of them available (this number was chosen in relation to the year 1980, in which Empire was released). In fact, all of these units have already been sold online, but it’s rumored that there’s a small amount of inventory available at selected Columbia retail outlets. The collection consists of the “Luke Skywalker” Echo Base jacket, the “Han Solo” Echo Base parka, and the “Leia Organa” Echo Base jacket. Similar jackets were worn by the cast of the 1980 film, and their designs have been heavily drawn on to produce the Echo Base collection (but are still officially licensed by Star Wars).

The Luke Skywalker jacket boasts a two-tone colorway in the form of a tan body vest and beige sleeves. It’s a cotton blend, water-resistant jacket and outer vest, and it has a retractable hood to protect you from the elements. The Han Solo parka channels its titular character’s rugged nature, and its fur-lined hood is perfect for battling wind and snow. The Leia jacket is similar to the Luke one, but it’s more fitted and has a lighter-colored outer vest to differentiate it. Each of the jackets are made from Omni-Heat Reflective insulation, which simultaneously makes them look like they’ve come from “a galaxy far, far away” and helps keep their wearers warm and toasty. Each of the pieces are stylish, versatile, and durable, and you don’t have to be a Star Wars fanatic to rock them, as they look great on just about anyone.

The prospect might seem a little out of left field, but this is actually not the first time that Columbia has used Star Wars as inspiration for its clothing. In December 2016, the clothing company released its “Rogue One” collection of jackets and coats, which took its cues from the first installment of the Star Wars “Anthology” series. Theses parkas and jackets were part-costume, part-durable outerwear and combined Columbia’s signature sturdiness and reliability with innovative new technologies and creative detailing to give the garments a distinctly “galactic” feel. The Last Jedi was just released last weekend. and we have no doubt that fans of the franchise will be wearing their new Echo Base jackets when they line up to get their tickets.

Most people don’t make a connection between space travel and the fabric used to make their clothes. OROS Apparel, however, depends on its proprietary “NASA-inspired insulation technology” for its high-end outerwear.

The designers say that their jackets are thinner and warmer than those of their competitors and that they even incorporate built-in four-way-stretch material to provide maximum flexibility for active people. 

OROS developed its unique “SolarCore” material by studying NASA and its pioneering use of high-tech fabrics. The company then used its research to invent its own aerogel based on the insulation technology used in space shuttles and astronauts’ suits. Its designers explain: “SolarCore is a breathable insulation that maintains its thermal performance both under compression and when wet, something your old goose-down jacket can’t compete against” — and as hikers and other outdoorsy types can attest to, breathability is key to keeping dry and comfortable on winter adventures.

Want to see how an OROS jacket stands up to extreme cold? The design team took one over to a warehouse to conduct exactly that experiment. One brave soul wore the jacket while the other team members blasted them with liquid nitrogen, bringing its outside temperature down to a staggering -321 degrees Fahrenheit. Thankfully, the OROS guinea pig in the jacket was still nice and warm — the temperature inside the jacket registered a comfortable 89 degrees.

We doubt that you’ll ever need protection from cold that severe, but OROS gear will certainly make any icy blasts of windchill feel like things of the past.

We’ve mentioned the OROS jackets, but it’s important to note that the company actually offers two different styles of outerwear: The “Orion” parka “is [their] warmest, toughest piece, built and tested to conquer the world’s harshest environments.” It has a waterproof shell, sealed arms, and is equipped with SolarCore insulation throughout. You’ll probably be taking things like gloves, sunglasses, and your phone with you wherever you go, so you’ll also appreciate the parka’s six exterior and two interior pockets. Plus, we like the fact that you can detach the hood if the need arises.

The “Discovery” jacket, a model that’s a little lighter than the Orion, is wind-resistant and water-repellent. It has SolarCore insulation built into its body sections and synthetic insulation in the sleeves. Think of it as the jacket you’ll grab for that quick walk to the grocery store or a casual hike in the fall or winter. We see it as the perfect piece of commuter outerwear.
OROS also makes vests and mid-layers like fleeces and quarter-zip tops look great under other jackets or on their own in milder weather. Runners and cyclists will no doubt love their comfortable fit, flat seams, and overall breathability.

To make things even better, your legs can also enjoy OROS’ SolarCore technology. The company has designed snow pants for all genders and insulated leggings specifically for women. The leggings are made for outdoor athletic pursuits, with the insulation and four-way stretch making them practical and stylish all at once.

“Practical,” “stylish,” and “warm” — pretty good words for winter apparel in our book.

Yes, you read that headline correctly – it does not slice nor does it dice but this remarkable design by Justan Gargasz does transform into three of the handiest things one can have while traveling outdoors: a (notably reversible) convertible jacket, a backpack and a one-person tent.

The convertible backpack/transforming jacket design conceals the tent or “cocoon” in folds around the back that provide support when not in use. The arms of the jacket become the anchors that tie off the bag when resting. Both bigger items can be collapsed down into a compact sling bag as well.

The colors (blue and brown) were chosen for their unobtrusive tones – designed to blend and appear simple and unassuming both indoors and out. For a backpack tent, it does expand into a size that’s perfectly well suited for a single person, albeit more of a bivvy sack than a tent. It’s also remarkably compact once the user is wearing it as a jacket or backpack, without any weird extra fabric drooping down to reveal that it’s more than it appears at first glance.

Here’s what designer Justin Gargasz says about his creation, which he named “Vessel”:

“Vessel addresses this universal need to get away by providing the user a cocoon integrated into a jacket. At any given moment the user can go outside, take the jacket off, tie the arms around a tree, pull out the cocoon and go inside. Distance and solitude become the ends to which one escapes, Vessel providing a meditative and introspective experience during any part of a persons’ everyday routine.”
