More precisely, designer Jaanus Orgusaar is. We first fell in love with his unusual, spherical shelves. The Mini, Small, Medium and Big Comb are made of plywood and come in four sizes – large, medium, small and mini.

We haven’t had a chance to ask the award-winning artist if his Dune shelf was inspired by the classic Sci-Fi book aka David Lynch movie, but we cannot resist the name – or the design. What’s evident is that Orgusaar is very much into exploring geometry. He’s built a much written-about, six-sided wood cabin.

Back to his shop though. Besides the book shelves, which work beautifully in small spaces (get the Mini), there are other futuristic pieces such as the Eight Cells Lamp and spinning Accelerator chair. Equally fascinating as this head-spinning seat is the Odyssey upholstered moleskin door, which looks like an oddly angelic portal into the future.

Get the scoop at www.facebook.com/Jaanus-Orgusaar-Disain and www.jaanusorgusaar.com (Warning: His website seems to feature the tiniest font on the Web.)

The post Spherical Shelves and More Futuristic Estonian Design first appeared on Dornob.

Coffee is an American pastime like football and barbecuing burgers. Most of us are not human without our first cup of Joe. But when it comes to coffeemaker design, we typically think … Italian. Or German. Wrong. Norway is where it’s at. Norway has a huge coffee culture; not the artisanal espresso brews that have swept our nation as of late, but black, classic filtered coffee. Cue Wilfa.

This Nordic electrical appliance company designs gorgeous coffee makers such as the Wilfa Svart Manuell. Winner of the Award for Design Excellence from the Norwegian Design Council, it is an object crafted – in cooperation with super barista and coffee connoisseur par excellence Tim Wendelboe – for pour-over style, manual hand-brewing. This process invites to slow down and be in the moment, because you pour the water over the ground coffee yourself. Even better, it doesn’t create as much waste as the popular pod and K-cup machines. The kettle holds 1.2 liters, and you can use regular Melitta filters.

If that’s too much effort on a bleary-eyed morning, check out Wilfa’s Precision Coffee Maker, an elegant automatic filter brewer. Aficionados of this award-winning coffee maker rave about its precision temperature and water control, and the fact that it brews a “coffee to the Golden Cup standard of the Specialty Coffee Associations of America (SCAA) and Europe (SCAE).” It’s available in sleek aluminum and stylish black. Learn more at www.wilfa.no and shop at www.williams-sonoma.com.

“I have spent a lot of time over the past 2 years together with Wilfa giving them feedback and teaching them about coffee. The first result was the manual brewer “Svart Manuell”, but that was meant as a teaser and a tool for the coffee geek to play with while we waited for the automatic version. There is a lot of technology and work put in to this pretty coffee brewer, and I think it looks awesome. It also brews really good filter coffee, but still you need to get your basics right like any other brewing techniques:

Use traceable and freshly roasted and ground coffee of high quality

Use clean fresh water with low mineral content (Tap water in Norway is perfect in most cases)

Use precise measurements. I recommend 60-70g per litre of water depending on how strong you want it. Use a scale to measure.

Make sure you grind the coffee to the right particle size. Too coarse will give you a watery and sour taste. Too fine will lead to bitter tastes.”

Housing, schools and other vital public buildings have always been based on the concept of minimal existence – that shouldn’t be the case today.”

Hadid was the first woman to win the prestigious Pritzker Prize – the Nobel Prize of architecture. A New Yorker magazine article described her as being dubbed the Lady Gaga of architecture, owing to her extravagant and wild designs. Hadid was born in Beirut and moved to London in 1972 to study architecture. And indeed, we could easily picture James Bond or his megalomaniac opponents lounge on this super yacht – the latter plotting world dominion; Bond, of course, frolicking with beauties. Behold Austrian mega yacht design by Motion Code Blue aka Migaloo Submarines and their brand new Kokomo Ailand submersible yacht, which is designed to look and feel like a private floating island.

The self-propelled Kokomo Ailand features an owner’s penthouse 80 meters above sea levels, two elevators, beach club, beach gym, and glass-bottom Jacuzzi. The jungle deck, a sheltered enclave complete with exotic plants, vertical gardens, palm trees and wildlife, has a pool with waterfall and cocktail bars. On the spa deck you will find the gym and massage and beauty salons, while the garden deck is perfect for lounging – or you can barbecue on the beach deck. From there, an elevator takes you to the beach club.

Your guests, who come and go via helipad, can enjoy incredible sea views from their private balconies. Should that get boring, there’s plenty of entertainment: an outdoor movie theater, laser light shows, a dance floor and stage, and an underwater elevator for shark feeding. Aside from the owner’s three-floor, 300-square-meter penthouse, there are six suites and four VIP suites. In all, the yacht is configured to fit 32 people: sixteen crew, two officers, one captain, twelve guests, and two owners. Submerged, it can endure two to three days, and with Stirling air-independent propulsion about two weeks.

The concept was presented at the Monaco Yacht Show in September 2015, and the company has already received many inquiries from interested parties. Get it? Whether or not it rains on your parade, your kid’s soccer game, or whatever outdoor situation where an umbrella and a jacket just won’t do, slip into your water and wind resistant, portable and lightweight tent escape. It provides shelter from the sun, rain and snow.

Inside the fully enclosable, zippered tent, it will be a whopping 30 degrees warmer (suffice to say, then, that it’s best used in cold weather.) Plus, you get sun protection with SPF 50 and 270 degree viewing. The popup pod is made of polyester with PU coating and measures 42” L x 42” W x 58” H. It’s assembled and taken down in seconds, so you won’t soak in the process of trying to get into and out of the tent. When you’re done using it, it folds into a carry bag of 22” diameters that weights 7 pounds. It fits a standard-size folding chair and comes with a roof, stakes and case for carrying.

The larger sibling, the XL undertheweather tent, can hold two small, armless chairs. It comes in a variety of colors, from clear, black and orange to camo. Price for a regular tent is $89.99–$99.99. First to market in the Outdoor Sports category, it’s our mission to continue to innovate in weather protection, and relief, for sports parents, hobbyists, hikers, tailgating fans, festival buffs, and anyone who’s determined to ‘Be There. Weather or Not.™'”
“Rick’s the guy with an entrepreneurial spirit and a brilliant idea. We all know most ideas usually end at the “brilliant idea” stage–but not for Rick. He’s spent years creating and perfecting the original, fully-enclosable personal Pod that pops-up and folds down in seconds (and we mean seconds). The idea came to Rick on the sidelines of a soccer field sitting in 29° degree weather, with high winds and sleet, bundled up yet soaked to the bone and freezing cold. He sketched his first Pod on the way home.”
Learn more at under-the-weather.com.

The post Pop Up Shelter for Outdoor Events first appeared on Dornob.

According to this notion, there are certain patterns and proportions that occur in nature, which go into the design of churches, temples and monuments but are also revered by mathematicians and philosophers. Think of the spiral and a snail shell. Or the Fibonacci sequence. Cozo in San Francisco wants to bring geometric art into your home via lights, sculptures and other designs.

Their nascence began with an installation project called HYBYCOZO in 2014. Yes, but this Barbie isn’t just your ordinary (and iconic) plastic doll. Hello Barbie is a creature from the Internet of Things, a tech gadget/connected device launched by Mattel in November 2015.
Basically, Hello Barbie is an Internet-connected toy that relies on consumer-grade artificial intelligence and voice recognition software to listen and talk back (sort of like Siri, if she were a Barbie). Her responses come from a pool of 8,000 of prerecorded statements. In order to work, she needs you to download an app, connect to your Wi-Fi, get access to the public Internet, and – of course – needs connection to the servers of ToyTalk, Mattel’s San Francisco-based partner, who helped to bring this high-tech doll to (artificial) life. When the user (e.g. your kid) talks to the toy, their recorded audio gets sent to ToyTalk via Wi-Fi and translated into text, which artificial intelligence software can then respond to, choosing from thousands of ready-to go responses. The system relies on keywords in order to provide a meaningful reply.

These keywords are hugely important for another reason. They are stored in a cloud database, so Barbie can fine-tune her responses later based on info she received and “remembers.” Also, all this keyword analysis goes into “trend bucket” so Mattel and ToyTalk can further refine their prerecorded responses. Since this IoT-enabled toy, dubbed “Surveillance Barbie” by the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC), is connected to your Wi-Fi, she has raised concerns from child advocacy groups and the cyber advocate community for being an easy target for security breaches. After all, she is a completely connected device that hackers might employ to get your credit card or social security numbers.

ToyTalk has taken public concerns seriously, declaring that it has created a “’bug bounty’, or an award for hackers to find any other security flaws, so it can fix them. It says in all of the cases surfaced by security researchers no children’s audio was accessed,” according to USA Today.

Will you invite Hello Barbie into your home, or do you think she should she stay in her pink Barbie Dream House? We just though you should know what’s out there: the good, the bad, the ugly and the incredible at the intersection of design and technology.

The post ToyTalk: Internet Connected Barbie first appeared on Dornob.

We do not need shelter. We got that covered. Still, that doesn’t stop us from wanting some extra, such as a tiny shelter from Full Moon Tiny Shelters, who create beautiful, minimalist wee buildings under 200 square feet. These tiny home builders are based in Nova Scotia and launched in 2013 — and tiny house movement aficionados have been paying attention from the start.

Dawn Higgins, partner at Full Moon Tiny Shelters, told the Canadian Chronicle Herald: “I feel many people are interested in downsizing and living simpler, less complicated lives. […] People are also increasingly interested in economic freedom and increased adaptability.”

Whether “raw or refined, elegant or ecstatic, playful or profound,” their small structures can be used as habitations, artist spaces, home office, writing retreat, vacation spot or boat house. Their ideals are simplicity, beauty, less is more and utmost craftsmanship. Because they build small, they can build better with only top materials. That’s why the cost per square foot of a tiny house is actually higher than that of a normal size house. It comes to around $250 to $300 per square foot. All are custom built, usually on a trailer, according to each client’s specifications. Options are having a living roof area, solar panels, a composting toilet, wood stove, small loft, grey water storage tank…

They’re not really intended as permanent homes but they are fully winterized for four-season-living, able to withstand hot summers and cold winters. Aside from being well insulated (floor, ceiling, walls), other important factors are maximizing the small space for utmost multi-use functionality, having good plumbing, kitchen and bathroom and, of course, cozy yet minimalist aesthetics that make the inhabitant feel happy and comfortable, not cramped and lacking. Beauty is huge for Full Moon Tiny Shelters, from the choice of wood to the paint color.

They currently do no have any models for sale but will soon feature one up for grabs. Best to just contact them. Since they’re in Canada, you’ll have to figure out the logistics of delivery. But the tiny shelters can be pulled on trailers and are freeway approved.

The post Tiny Shelters Think Small for Big and Beautiful Results first appeared on Dornob.

And yes, it is indeed shaped like a tortilla, although its thickness would suggest a pupusa. The taco shape comes into play when you adjust its loops and wooden tapestry balls to create various configurations for solo chillaxing or spooning – such as a chair, bean bag or comfy rug.

The inspiration for Oradaria Design? “A fabric stockist, a do-it-yourself shop, an ironmongery, a sewing machine, a hammer, 2 sprays, a garden hose, 2 foam sheets, 20 eyelets, 8 kg of polyester staple fiber, 4 tapestry wooden balls, 2 m of elastic cord, a lot of patience, fantasy, enthusiasm and sleepless nights.”

We were sold as soon as we heard “taco.” So were others.
“His built work gives economic opportunity to the less privileged, mitigates the effects of natural disasters, reduces energy consumption, and provides welcoming public space. Innovative and inspiring, he shows how architecture at its best can improve people’s lives,” according to Thomas J. Pritzker, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Pritzker Organization.

Aravena, the first winner from Chile, will be in the company of famous heads such as Jean Nouvel (2008), Rem Koolhaas (2000), Frank Gehry (1998), Oscar Niemeyer (1988) and I.M. Pei (1983). But since anyone interested in architecture can toss these luminous names about at a cocktail party, and even pair them up with their best-known works (Gehry equals Guggenheim Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in L.A.; I.M. Pei did the landmark glass Louvre Pyramid in Paris), it is the less prominent picks, such as Aravena, whose names and work are elevated into the highest echelons and thus into the cultural dialogue at large.

The winner receives a bronze medallion, a certificate and a $100,000 grant. But aside from these tangible rewards, the effect of the prize on the architect is to cement their stature, akin to getting a star on the Walk of Fame or entry in the Hall of Fame. It’s these names that make it into history books and university courses that shape the landscape and future of architecture as a whole. While the prize has become under criticism for its lack of diversity and sexism (It took 26 years for a woman to be chosen, Dame Zaha Hadid in 2004.), this year’s choice is not a member of the old guard but belongs to a growing group of socially minded architects whose mission is to solve the global housing crisis. Alejandro Aravena’s firm focuses very much on social aspects, something he says is not taught at architecture school.

So the Pritzker this year is a choice one can applaud, a selection that validates the award’s relevancy, as it puts into high relief, though Aravena’s work, a pressing global issue; and reminds us that architecture is not reserved for a lofty elite but meant for all of us, down to the most disenfranchised. Designed by San Diego based start-up Solenica, this cool looking device is an intelligent, solar-powered mirror that follows the sun throughout the day and reflects sunlight in the gloomiest corner of your home. It’s perfect for climates with a scarcity of daylight or long winter months. But even if you live in ever-sunny SoCal, you might want to add an extra pop of sunshine.

Place the orb in a spot (inside or outside) where it can catch some rays, then point it in the direction you want to illuminate. You can also set the desired point via your smartphone. Through an algorithm based on a photosensor, Lucy automatically follows the movement of the sun and delivers up to 7,000 lumens of natural light. Thus one could save energy by keeping lamps turned off.

Lucy was invented by Diva Tommei, the CEO of Solenica, when she attended Cambridge University to work on her PhD in Bioinformatics. The lack of sunlight there made her develop Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression related to changes in seasons.

Aside from bringing a healthy does of sunlight into your home, Lucy is an object of minimalist beauty and, so says Solenica, “a single installation of the device can reduce a user’s carbon footprint by up to one ton per year.” Being powered by photovoltaic (solar) cells, it requires no electricity and is an attractive, self-contained sphere without ugly cables or wires that would distract from its globe-like Italian design.

Solenica works on devising smart lighting solutions. Their mission is the “empowerment of happiness and health through design and technology.” They were chosen to join the first Qualcomm Robotics Accelerator, along with nine other startups, to receive assistance in growing their robotics. Lucy ($199) is available for pre-order.

The post We Love Lucy, the Robotic Sunlight Reflector first appeared on Dornob.

The 19 angular structures were created by LUMO Arkitekter and are set in the isolated South Fyn archipelago along a number of islands displaying unspoiled, idyllic natural beauty.

The architects dubbed these getaway shelters for outdoors enthusiasts looking to boat, fish, kayak or surf as “Blue Landmarks,” but in photos they appear black. The 50 shelters in 19 locations come in five sizes and styles, but all feature a large wood chip exterior protected with black-pigmented wood tar oil. They were inspired by traditional, simple fishermen huts where the catch was stored, and thus named after five different types of local fish: lumpfish, monkfish, garfish, eelpout and flounder. We wish we could get a better glimpse into the inside, which seems to feature minimalist, unadorned timber, but their site shows no super helpful layout for interior living and sleeping quarters.

One shelter features a bird-watching platform, another has a sauna. Some sleep just two people, others can accommodate seven. We love the angular design’s round openings which allow guests to observe nature and the sky – in fact the whole lunar orbit.

The architects worked closely with The Danish Nature Agency, an organization under the Danish Ministry of Environment, and with waivers from the Coastal Protection Zone with the goal of highlighting this locale as a destination for nature explorations, water sports and other such endeavors. Some cabins are set right on the beach, others within a reasonable proximity to the coast, some solo, others in clusters – all harmoniously coexisting with their nature setting in order not to disturb their immediate environment.

Looks like a trip to Denmark is in order.

The post Seaside Shelters in Denmark: Blue Landmarks in Unspoiled Nature Setting first appeared on Dornob.

The faceted, computer-generated triangulation pattern allows it to be highly customizable. It’s “programmable furniture” in the sense that 3D modeling technology allows companies to envision a skeleton of what their desired product would look like, while also figuring out the dimensions of the triangles – while consumers might get easy-to-assemble furniture straight of the box (shipped totally flat) with no assembly required.

The Milan-based company’s origami-like structural material is featured at Milan boutique Maison Margiela (it looks like marble curtains); also at Reign restaurant in Dubai (both with a walnut finish and shiny, black laminate); and on a Programmable Table in cooperation with MIT’s Self-Assembly Lab. Have you heard of straw bale house construction? It’s an ancient type of building method that has been gaining popularity thanks to its high sustainability, smaller carbon footprint and lower cost of a conventional home.

Unlike “regular” houses, this energy-efficient method relies on natural materials, thus reducing pollution and waste materials. According to Straw Bale Innovations, straw bale construction can lower your energy expenditures by 75 percent. These structures offer excellent insulation and soundproofing. Although one would think straw catches fire easily, according to Straw Bale Innovations, “straw bale homes offer 3 times the burn resistance” of a conventionally built home. The example shown here is the owner-built, “Rustic Asian,” two-bedroom Steve Padgitt Residence dubbed “Snowed Inn” by the owner, who wanted a sustainable house off the grid. He chose a forested area three miles from McCall, Idaho.

So what is straw bale construction? Simply put, it’s a building technique that uses bales of straw stacked on a foundation. The bales are plastered with a material combination such as lime stucco, clay, cement etc. Most commonly, the bales are held together by two strings or three strings. Aside from being highly eco-friendly, according to Andrew Morrison of Straw Bale Innovations, “straw bale homes are typically about 5% less expensive than conventional homes when all of the details are in line.”

Straw bale construction is ideal for smaller owner-builder projects such as a cottage or artist space, but one can certainly hire sub contractors and build a whole home. Anything is possible. According to Wikipedia, a luxury accommodation in South Africa, Didimale Game Lodge, was built using 10,000 bales and has housed famous heads such as Nelson Mandela and Tony Blair.

In Switzerland, Maya Boutique Hotel, also made entirely using straw bales, is the winner of the 2015 Luxury Travel Guide Awards for Best Boutique Hotel Switzerland as well as the 2015 Grand Prix Best Innovation in Hotel Concept. Thanks to its straw bale construction, it doesn’t need conventional heating and air-conditioning. Meanwhile, the method has been around since Paleolithic times.

Building a straw bale house requires deep immersion into the topic. It’s a learning curve. Aside from deciding what type of bale house to build, the size of bales and thickness of the walls, there are considerations such as whether to build a typical slab foundation, how to deal with rough electrical, plumbing and framing inspections, the issue and length of time required to plaster the bales, finding a certified baler to help.

Then there’s the question of cost and how to estimate it, and the fact that most banks won’t finance such a non-mainstream endeavor. Everything you ever wanted to know about all aspects of building a straw bale home can be found at strawbale.com. There are online tutorials, videos and workshops.

The post Sustainability Trends: A Beautiful, Natural Straw Bale House first appeared on Dornob.

First trending majorly in jewelry and watches, rose gold has now swapped over to anything from faucets to tables. Rose gold can look both old world and elegant and super modern and unfussy. Check out these possibilities.

According to German brand Dornbracht, which has been innovating bathroom and kitchen concepts since 1950, the days of “cool white” plus metal are over. Instead, warm, earthy notes are de rigueur. The rose gold kitchen fixtures from their Cyprum series are elegant and warm, made from 18-carat gold and copper. We can picture them in urban lofts as much as modern classic spaces.

Rose gold also looks unexpected and glam yet still architecturally sleek in coffee tables, side tables and dining chairs. Being metal, the color is more versatile than if it were just rose. It really works well when applied minimally with just one statement piece. After all, most people don’t want to go for bling.

The warm metal hue movement is also evident in lighting design such as this mid-century-modern-inspired pendant lamp or rosy Copper Shade Floor Lamp. Rose gold looks super luxe in combination with black accents like on these serving carts and bar carts. You can add some matchy-matchy Moscow Mule mugs.
If a larger piece in rose gold is too much of a commitment, consider a small object like a letter holder for your fan mail.

The post Shine On: Furnishings in Trending Rose Gold first appeared on Dornob.
