Speaking of his brand philosophy, Minale says: “We always start a home or space from the small touch points and metal fittings first and then work outwards, which is more in tune with how an industrial designer would tackle the subject of interior design — in short, it’s reversed.”

The company now has storefront locations in London and Stockholm, offering fittings and furniture for kitchens, bathrooms, and living rooms. Hip light switch and electrical plate alternatives remain their bread and butter, but pieces like the burnt steel “Forked” pendant are also natural favorites.

Minale’s aesthetic takes its cues from his after-hours hobby of the past few years. “I was working as an architect by day and making custom motorbikes by night,” he explains. “In a garage in …East London, I taught myself how to transform stock vintage motorbikes into one-off customs. I made all the parts from scratch and started selling my motorbikes to London’s most notorious. Being an architect, requests soon turned from motorbikes to home fittings, and I set about making everything from door handles to toilet roll holders. The seed was planted and my love child between architecture and motorbikes was born, his name — Buster + Punch.”

After finding success in his career with architecture firms Foster + Partners and Richard Rogers, Minale launched his home fashion line in 2013, immediately striking a chord with London’s celebrity and sub-culture scenes with knurled knobs in the style of speaker switches and pendant lights that mimicked hand-held microphones.

Buster + Punch’s glam industrial aesthetic has led to numerous collaborations over the years, including the creation of the Rockstar Bar with Harrod’s, a liquor console made of solid American walnut with a quilted silk backing, a black-caged light, and 24-karat gold hardware. Another partnership with Rolls-Royce resulted in a bespoke version of the Buster Bulb, an LED lamp with a Royce-patented B22-fitting and a gold-plated bayonet cap. The one-off was available for just one night.

The firm’s Skull collection is the product of its most recent collaboration — this time with LA producer and Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker. Inserting the tattoo and skate culture icon into home decor, the anthology is made up of lights, candle holders, door stops, cabinet knobs, and even necklaces. The Skull Table lamp, for example, comes in all polished brass or solid steel with a distinguishing cranial fob on the end of the pull chain.

Attention to details like these is what Buster + Punch is all about. As Minale says on the company website, “In a nutshell, my mission is to reinvent forgotten home fittings into the unforgettable.”

And the future is now, as the Spirit gigabike is set to hit the streets in all its glory soon. Looking like the world’s coolest mashup, the bike evokes some serious Tron: Legacy vibes with its low-slung body and wide, pavement-grabbing wheels, married with the best of Batman’s most ambitious designs. Think Dark Knight-era Batmobile’s opaque black, chunky (but never clunky) details and need for speed. Just one look and you know this thing is gonna hug curves, burn rubber, and never look back.

The body of this motorhead’s dream-come-true doesn’t only come in basic black, but mixes things up with dark gray, metallic silver, and orange, as well as gold body options that contrast beautifully with the stark matte details found on the rest of the bike. And the details really are something. Thick, hypertrophied wheels, curving aerodynamic lines, high-tech displays, headlights and taillights that mirror Robocop’s distinctive headgear: the Spirit gigabike positively oozes speed and charisma, a bonafide influencer sure to leave other bikes in its uber-sleek and trendy dust.

Feeling your inner Batman? Then stick with the opaque, gritty black that would make even Bruce Wayne jealous and rule the streets of Gotham (or your own hometown) with the electric bike of the future. Marvel more your thing? Then go for the gold and challenge your inner Iron Man (smug sense of self-satisfaction not included). Whatever color you choose, be prepared to lean over those handlebars and ride into Tron universe, leaving just an echo of the razor-thin taillights blinking in your wake.

Creating epic rides that mimic pop culture legends is nothing new — see the real-life Mach Five Speed Racer car designed by custom car builder Mark Towle if you don’t believe us — but the Spirit gigabike cherry picks its influences from some of the coolest ones around. Even better, it’s an eco-friendly e-bike that’s road ready and totally rad. What more could you look for in futuristic transport?

Voxan Wattman was initially aiming to try to set a new land speed record in July 2020, but as a result of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, their attempt was delayed. For now, the event has been tentatively postponed until 2021. Regardless of the delays, Max Biaggi, who’s been the motorcycle racing world champion a whopping six times now, is still set to be the one who rides the new electric motorcycle at the Salar de Uyuni salt flat in Bolivia. The team’s goal is to reach a top speed of 205 miles per hour and break the earlier record of 203.1 mph, set in 2019 on the Motibec electric motorcycle by Japanese rider Ryuji Tsuruta.

While the attempt may been delayed, the company was too excited to keep from showing off their new bike and detailing the things that make it unique. For starters, the motorcycle’s front suspension has a double wishbone design instead of the traditional front fork. There’s also no parachute or front break to slow it down or stop it. Instead, it’s brought to a halt with a rear brake that slowly brings the bike to a full stop. Aerodynamics are improved and instability is reduced by using a this kind of brake, whereas a front brake increases the chance of crashing when engaged at exceptionally high speeds.

The Voxan Wattman has a 15.9kWh battery nearly identical to those in competing electric motorcycles, such as the Harley-Davidson LiveWire, which itself uses a 15.5kWh battery. The major distinction is that the Voxan Wattman’s battery is configured to unload most of its power in only a few minutes. By contrast, the majority of electric street bikes can be operated for a few hours on each trip. On top of that, the Voxan Wattman battery pack’s weight of 309 pounds is nearly half of the whole bike’s 661-pound weight.

The Dry Ice Factor

Needless to say, generating such a tremendous amount of power in a matter of minutes generates an unimaginable amount of intense heat. Since a conventional radiator would adversely affect the bike’s aerodynamic performance, the e-moto’s design team decided on a highly original approach to cooling with dry ice. More specifically, the frozen CO2 is seized in a reservoir inside the frame and assists in attracting the heat away from the motor and batteries.

Other Records to Consider

“Official World Record” sounds very lofty and finite, but Richard Hatfield, CEO of Lightning Motorcycles, is quick to point out the stats on his company’s renowned Lightning Motorcycles LS-218. In 2013, the LS-218 hit a top speed of 218 miles per heour at the Bonneville Salt Flats, setting the FIM and AMA records. He even produced the proof in the form of the time slip from the team’s 2011 Bonneville run, as well as a variety of other awards for attaining speeds higher than either the Voxan Wattman or Motibec.

Even better, he unveiled a playful add-on for the Cybertruck during the glass test demonstration: an ATV called the Cyberquad.

More Mystery

The ATV introduction was definitely surprising and fun, but only one aspect of the toy was actually revealed: the fact that it costs extra. Also implied was that the Cyberquad was not going to be available on its own. In other words, you have to buy a Cybertruck to get the option to purchase the Cyberquad ATV. Predictably, Musk vaguely hinted that “someday” the ATV may be available to purchase separately.

As a Tesla employee drove the Cyberquad onto the bed of the Cybertruck, you could almost see question marks appear above the spectators’ heads. They wanted to know how much it would cost, its capabilities and specs, whether or not it would be available at the same time the Cybertruck shipped, and so much more.

Alas, all the information Tesla offered was that the ATV could accommodate up to two passengers at a time and be charged from the bed of the Cybertruck, though not wirelessly. To date, there is no Cyberquad information available on the Tesla website.

What We Do Know

The roll-down cover and built-in ramp in the Cybertruck’s tailgate seem to have been designed specifically with the Cyberquad in mind. Of course, that feature could simply be for convenience and security, akin to a covered bed and ramp on a conventional pickup truck. But unlike standard pickup trucks, the body and cab of the Cybertruck are one continuous form. No word on whether the Cyberquad will have a similar design.

The Cyberquad moniker has already been trademarked by Tesla for their ATVs. After the public presentation, Musk tweeted that the ATV would definitely be available for purchase at the same time as the truck, though of course that date it still unknown. Production of the truck is allegedly scheduled to begin in the latter part of 2021, but it’s unclear whether the Cyberquad will be concurrently produced.

Honda’s line of ATVs with comparable appearance and internal combustion power run from $5,000 to $10,000, although Tesla has never been concerned with competitive pricing.

In The Meantime

On December 28th, Cybertruck made its entertainment industry debut in a video for a newly-released Travis Scott piece. Although the truck is parked in the film, the video also features Scott riding a prototype Cyberquad ATV in assorted scenes. It’s not much, but that might be all you get on the Cyber duo for the next year or so.

The space is designed to appeal to all kinds of people, including contemporary vagabonds, motorbike lovers, and Udine locals. Situated along a busy highway at the base of a mountain range and overlooking the sea, the Filling Station Motel offers its guests style, practical services, and a prime location. Visual Display retained many of the building’s original features, like the doors and windows, and took inspiration from retro motorist motels for the aesthetics.

The 500-square-meter hangar (about 5,381 square feet) still boasts its classic midcentury modern exterior, but it’s now covered in colorful stenciling that reads “moto custom,” “concept store,” and “osteria,” the latter term referring to a casual Italian eatery. Step through the front door, and you’ll find a sleek check-in (or rather, checkout) counter for a spacious open retail area, a brand new motorcycle workshop, and a pair oversized glass doors leading to the restaurant. Everything is painted matte black and oozes an industrial chic vibe, from the helmets mounted to the walls to the soft glow of the vintage tube lamps.

The workshop, which performs repair and customization services and also produces FSM brand motorcycles, is the heart of the business, enclosed in a kind of room within a room. It’s flanked by both the osteria, which itself offers simple, seasonal foods and local wines, and the concept store. Outside, café tables line the painstakingly restored facade, and of course, there’s plenty of parking for motorcycles. How could anyone biking through this part of Italy resist a stop here?

With a name like “Filling Station Motel,” you might expect this space to still offer beds like it did in the old days. Alas, that’s no longer the case. The name is more of a nostalgic tribute to the past, but this adaptation does preserve the spirit of the original structure — along with most of its architecture.

“Starting again is better on a motorcycle,” say the designers, adding: “beyond the entrance gate, underneath wide concrete arches painted in black, the workshop areas, offices, a convivial space, and the osteria have been created. Large transparent windows and wire mesh divisions connect all the areas and lead the guest through the different areas even with a glance.”

“You can sip a good glass of wine [while] comfortably sitting on vintage furniture or standing at the imposing concrete counter. Or you can have something to nibble while observing the motorcycles on display or watching the mechanics at work beyond two gigantic portholes. By recovering a piece of town history, the territory was rehabilitated, and we [can start to] look forward.”

A turbo-diesel motorcycle mounted to a small elevator on the back makes solo journeys quick and easy, and solar panels provide power inside. Interior comforts include a cabin that functions as a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, with the toilet incinerating all waste into a non-toxic, sterile powder. All vehicles are custom-designed so they can be kitted out with whatever technology is necessary or desired for its intended purpose.
