“Since I was a child I have always loved hammocks,” Sala explains. “My grandmother was of Mexican decent and had all kinds of them in the garden of the beach house. When I was 20 years old I was living in Lisbon and I bought my first hammock and I used to hang it in the ‘miradouros’ of the city. Later the hammocks accompanied me on all my wild travels to the Greek islands. During the lockdown I was lucky enough to find myself in a house in the countryside and I hung one from two trees to get back to these wonderful memories and feelings, to that sweet rocking that cures all my worries. Long live the hammocks, they always make me smile… maybe because they are themselves giant smiles?”

A smile is a sweet way of looking at the arc shape of an occupied hammock, integrated here into a black metal frame as the bright red mouth while basic line work suggests the shapes of the eyes, nose, and face.

“Bruno’s Swing” is another incredible piece by Sala that similarly makes the interactive component the “heart” of the structure, while the frame offers both support and an aesthetic element. A child’s swing takes the shape of a bright red heart in the chest of the motherly figure wrought in black iron. Sala was inspired to create this sculpture after spending many hours in playgrounds enjoying the happiness and wonder of her child swinging.

Her child had recently grown too heavy to swing in her arms, and she missed that feeling. “With the swing I felt I was doing the same thing but with the help of an architectural structure,” she says. “Before this I had been that structure and in the future I will always be that structure, of care and affection. That is why when I drew it, it came out in the form of a self-portrait.”

“Fly High” is more decorative in nature, but no less impressive. This kinetic ceiling sculpture of a woman’s figure places her head, arms, legs, and heart on different hanging wires so they move independently, making it look like she’s floating or dancing any time a breeze rolls in.

Sala also uses wires and movement in her kinetic human sculptures series. Each one is like a meditative stress-relief toy — just twang a part with your finger and watch its moving elements gently sway or spin. Many have maternal themes, like a mother bird flying with her baby bird, a woman’s figure cradling an egg, and a family of figures relaxing together, all intertwined.

As complex as it looks, the ARK isn’t too hard to set up. It comes with a lightweight military-grade telescopic carbon fiber frame, which is a pretty big upgrade from your standard tent poles and tarp. Of course, this inflatable frame is what gives it the extra stability it needs to be roomy and comfortable, whether you’re setting it up on the ground or between a few trees. Inspired by kitesurfing technology, the frame also holds the tent erect in stormy conditions. On top of that, a multi-anchor strap system gives you virtually infinite possibilities for suspension set-ups, including using a single hook point to hang it from something like a bridge or branch overhead.

A description on the ARK’s Kickstarter page explains that “a classic camping stretcher weight is usually around five to 10 kg, and it’s bulky. Designed for either a comfortable single occupant or a tight fit for two, the ARK measures about 38.5 inches tall and 122 inches wide once assembled, and when it’s in hammock mode, the floor creates three storage areas for all your gear, so it stays dry no matter what’s happening outside. It packs down reasonably small, too, at about 8 by 20 inches for the compression sack and 27.5 inches for the poles (both of which can be strapped to your hiking pack like a normal tent).

Another cool feature is the transparent roof, made of high-quality medical polyurethane to resist extreme temperatures and rain while giving you a view of the stars. Fabric shutters let you close it if you’d rather shut out the morning sun, and stiff Dacron fabric and kevlar reinforcement keep the whole thing from being damaged or punctured by falling sticks and rocks.

As you might expect, the ARK hammock tent costs a little more than something you might pick up at REI. The complete kit, which includes the tent, carbon frame and cam straps, was recently offered as a reward on a recent Kickstarter campaign for €1,895+ ($2,240). Shipping is set to start from France to the United States in April 2021, and it will likely be available on the retail market around that time as well.

If you’ve never tried camping in a hammock before, you should get on it ASAP. Particularly for those who find sleeping on the ground uncomfortable, spending the night suspended in a hammock can feel like being cradled by a cloud. Hammock tents equipped with bug nets and rain tarps have even become mainstays in every major retailer’s outdoors section, but alas, their use is still limited to places with plenty of trees.

If you want to make a trek out to a desert, beach, alpine plateau, or simply a place where hammock camping isn’t allowed, you’ll have to pull out your conventional tent and sleep on the ground — unless you get yourself a Tammock, of course.

Fresh off a round of crowdfunding on Kickstarter and Indiegogo, the Tammock is exactly what its name suggests: a combination tent and hammock. But unlike the kind that uses straps to hang from trees, this one is freestanding, making it versatile enough to go with you just about anywhere. A group called LIT Outdoors came up with the idea for this hybrid while camping in the Southern Utah desert, where trees can be hard to come by.

The company explains: “Our goal was to design a portable solution that would allow outdoor adventurists to use their hammocks anywhere in the world, whether it be a desert, beach, music festival, hotel balcony, bedroom, or your very own backyard. As development began, we discovered many hammock-lovers shared the same problems we faced, such as unpredictable weather, storage needs, bugs, and animals. This gave us the idea of putting a protective tent around a relaxing hammock. And so, the Tammock was born. You can now take your hammock adventure anywhere.”

The Tammock comfortably accommodates one person using a sturdy metal frame for support. Large openings on either side allow you to sit sideways and longways, allowing you to enjoy the views around you in whatever position you find most comfortable. Minus the rain fly, the section of tent directly above the hammock is almost entirely mesh, so you get plenty of air flow throughout the night and can gaze up at the stars while you drift off to sleep. Plus, setup is simpler and takes less time than the average tent, since there’s only one pole to handle and the frame unfolds into place with zero assembly required.

A mesh storage pocket directly overhead offers a place for sensitive items like phones and keys as well as tent lights, but you can also keep your valuables in another pocket on the side. The waterproof rainfly is easy to throw on if it starts to sprinkle. You can also use the hammock by itself, if you like, making the Tammock a double-duty piece of gear that would be pretty nice to have at pretty much every outdoor event.

If there’s one major downside to the Tammock, it’s the size and weight once it’s packed up in its carry bag. The packed size is 44 inches by eight inches, and it weighs in at a cringe-inducing 20 pounds, so it’s definitely not for backpackers or anyone else keen on traveling light. Still, if you don’t have far to hike or don’t mind toting the extra weight around, it’s a worthwhile investment.

LIT Outdoors raised $175,466 to get the Tammock into production, with backers of the crowdfunding campaign expected to receive their rewards in September 2019. That means the rest of us can probably snag some up for ourselves this fall.

The Mood Swing collection has been broadcast several times on TV in the UK. And metal sculptor Stephen Myburgh is no stranger to promoting himself on TV either; in August 2011, he appeared on “Dragon’s Den,” a TV show on BBC,to present his majestic Mood Swing copper swing seats for possible investment.
“Give me a chance I’ll make magic products that the world will buy, I promise you,” said South African-born Myburgh on the show, but unfortunately, the “dragons” just weren’t convinced.
For them, it was all about the bottom line, and retailing at around £5K ($7.5K at that time), they believed the swings were luxury items not worth their personal time and investment. The fact that the princess of Liechtenstein was a customer cut no ice—presumably this proved to them it was a niche item.

Lucky for us, Myburgh was happy to disagree. His artistry and expertise is irrepressible, and the Mood Swing’s days on UK telly were not over. ITV’s “Love Your Garden,” shown in June 2015 featured the swings, both inside and outside, as part of an inspirational garden furniture feature. Other pieces of copper furniture have gone on to internet fame.

And if it’s inspiration you’re after, British inspirational retail expert and TV shopping guru Mary Portas was seen swinging on Ostara in her Channel 4 “Mary Portas: Personal Shopper” series. Given that Portas is considered to be an influential guide to what to buy, (she also heads up Channel 4’s TV series “What Britain Buys”) this was some coup for Myburgh and his swings.


“Nature and its subtleties have always been my design program. But opulence and luxury offer the theater that I love to live with. Copper is a wonderful medium to merge these two desires,” said Myburgh.
Born in Durban, South Africa, Myburgh completed his national service then left on his voyage of discovery:
“My travels have taken me all over the world. From the jungles of Guatemala to the deserts of Egypt,” he said. “It is these places and these experiences that help me see the world as I see it now.”

In 1997 he arrived in London. Drawn to working with copper, which he believes like him, is very adaptable, he began to explore large scale metal work. A year later, in partnership with Caroline Fletcher (his future wife), Myburgh Designs launched the Mood Swing collection.
“Each Myburgh design blends high-end sculptural originality with lasting functionality, inviting you to create and enjoy your own personal paradise. Imaginatively designed garden swing seats are crafted using luxurious organic materials that mellow beautifully with age,” according to the Myburgh Design brochure.


Myburgh was warned on Dragon’s Den that “artistic talent should stay with you—for all your talents you’ll drive people mad who go into business with you.”
Well, happily it doesn’t seem to have put him off and his Mood Swing collection is still going strong and rocking the world.

In an expensive metropolis like London, finding an affordable place to live often means accepting life in a small space. Still, there are many creative ways in which urbanites have used, and continue to use, the limited space that they have. The Urban Cabin gives us another idea of how that can be done, with an architecture that relates to the history of London itself.

“With the concept we wanted to visualize London’s cultural differences and traditions, but also modern habits that are very typical for the city,” explains Corinna Natter, an experience designer at MINI LIVING, on the company’s website.

At its core, the Urban Cabin is a narrow box attached to a quaint library. What Sam Jacob and MINI have given us is essentially London’s version of Mies van der Rohe’s “Barcelona Pavilion,” a project that the great German architect designed for the 1929 International Exposition. Built with materials and an open plan rich in meaning, the Urban Cabin could be unofficially referred to as “London Pavilion.” The exterior of the cabin consists mostly of a reflective material. The façade, like London itself, mirrors the globe in terms of its diverse population and multivariate cultural history.

The library is housed in the section of the cabin that stands out as much as it sticks out. From the outside, it resembles a quickly arranged stack of different-sized books, each spine bearing its own identity. On the inside, the library is layered with stories of London, with a selection organized not by subject or the Dewey Decimal System, but by color. This colorful representation of the city is the combined result of its inhabitants’ various ways of living over the past 400 years. While many Londoners are aware that 121 of their country’s public libraries closed in 2017 alone, the Urban Cabin’s library reminds us of what is being lost. Unlike any other space in a city (including museums), libraries are transcendent areas where one can open a book and suddenly be anywhere in time. In the cabin’s library and overall architecture, we are speed reading London through the documentation of psychogeography and the changing ways of existing in the city.

Another meaningful part of the cabin is the sleeping area, where nothing but a hammock exists. To rest or sleep in a hammock is to experience life with everything up in the air: one can never be sure whether the support system will hold. As such, the hammock is emblematic of the generational precariousness of London life. Due to things like Second World War bombardment and escalating rents, the places where the average person can sleep in the city without a care are few. To rest in London is to be exposed to that vulnerability and to embrace it. The sleeping area is the only part of the cabin that feels exposed. One can sleep in front of a floor-to-ceiling high window and louvres, with their clothing and accessories all on a stand leaning against the wall. Above, a skylight acts like a built-in alarm clock, awaking potential sleepers with the natural light of daybreak.

The kitchen is the most decorated part of the cabin, where Londoners can socialize over food both inside and out. A perforated wall board allows for multiple configurations of shelving depending on the inhabitant’s particular needs. Not only can the décor be changed, but the kitchen itself can be moved. “Perhaps it’s because of the usual weather, but when the sun shines, Londoners love to make the most of it — makeshift BBQs, lunch-hour sunbathing, and so on,” explains Jacob. “Here, the idea is that if the weather is good you can roll the whole kitchen outside. We thought that providing this kind of flexibility — where your living space could turn inside out — would be great.”

The Urban Cabin is a practical space rich in London history. MINI Living will exhibit another Urban Cabin in New York next month, with hopes of further tailoring the concept to other cities in 2018.

Flat 227 by OODA — Porto, Portugal

Portuguese design firm OODA created a spacious atmosphere in this two-story apartment by incorporating floor-to-ceiling windows, using lots of white paint, and installing a newly enlarged full-height stairwell—complete with a net stretched across part of it to form a built-in hammock. The net is located next to a window with incredible views of the sea and proves that comfortable lounging areas can fit into surprisingly small spaces.

Tadeo 4909 by Proyecto Cafeína — Puebla, Mexico

The architects at Proyecto Cafeína created two-story lofts with lots of character for a new 8-unit condominium in Puebla, Mexico. The design features a sharp contrast between exposed materials, like brick and concrete, and a clean glass exterior. One of the building’s most interesting features is its net lounge area, which has been tucked away in a quiet, sunny corner.

Maison NW by Nathalie Wolberg — Saint-Ouen, France

Just outside of Paris in the town of Saint-Ouen, architect Nathalie Wolberg has converted the former headquarters of a printing house into the workshops and living spaces of nine artists, including herself. Maison NW was created as a laboratory for testing out new designs, environments, and furniture arrangements. The experimental structure contains all kinds of cool rooms and features, including a built-in hammock. According to Wolberg, the large net “allows the individual to extract himself from the surrounding environment, and makes the body become gravity-conscious.”

Micro House by Ruetemple — Moscow, Russia

The Russian firm Ruetemple was charged with the difficult task of designing a 300-square-foot apartment that would be comfortable, spacious, fun, and practical for both adults and children. They tackled this challenge by utilizing as much vertical space as possible and integrating several built-in storage elements. The architects removed the floor of the area above the living room and, leaving only the support beams in place, replaced it with a built-in hammock that would allow a family to see and talk to each other from both levels of the home. Before having its floor removed, this upper room felt claustrophobic and was not even tall enough to fit furniture in.

Baan Moom Residence by Integrated Field — Bangkok, Thailand

Integrated Field managed to pack enough space for gardening, dreaming, creating, resting and enjoying nature into just three stacked stories for a Bangkok family of five. The home was designed around a series of openings that promote daylight transmission, ventilation, and visual connections. Naturally, the team chose to install a net lounge over one of them.

Floating on an actual cloud might theoretically offer the best sleep any of us have ever had, but in the real world, a floating mattress that can be installed literally anywhere you imagine will do nicely. As if a floor-to-ceiling wall of books isn’t enough to coax a wistful sigh from any bibliophile, this renovated 1950s home in Madrid tacks on a cozy, elevated hammock as a reading nook, accessible via library ladder. Spanish design firm Eque y Seta wanted to freshen up the formerly dated home for a modern-day family, making it lighter and brighter and adding a few fun features for kids and adults alike to enjoy.

While the living room hosts more traditional floor-to-ceiling bookshelves in dark wood tones, making hundreds of titles accessible to anyone who wants to lounge on the couch or take a seat at the dining table, the library has a youthful appeal enhanced by lots of natural light. Taking advantage of the double-height space, which might be awkwardly narrow for many other uses, the hammock simply consists of white mesh strung onto a metal frame, which is attached to the built-in bookcase.

Reading nooks tend to be dark and isolating, encouraging you to settle in with some blankets and maybe even a flashlight to take in all that tiny text. In contrast, this hammock feels connected to the room around it, yet no less inviting. Daylight streams in from the glass doors leading to a balcony, and an adjacent staircase offers access to a lofted bed under a spacious skylight.

The three rectangular floors of the home are arranged in a staggered stack, topped by gabled roofing, with the library on the third floor. The rest of the home continues this minimal yet comforting feel, with little illustrations painted onto the walls of the children’s bedroom. Skylights penetrate all the way down to the ground floor and windows gaze out onto the garden, creating the atmosphere of an atrium throughout the full height of the home.

According to Egue y Seta, the key ingredients in transforming the old townhouse are high ceilings, comfort, and a splash of natural light, with a dressing made of authenticity, creativity, and a passion for books, stories, and film. “Serve generously and prepare yourself to share with family and friends a delicious home with a happy ending and a savory aftertaste that manages to convey the personality and lifestyle of a well read couple and their fairytale children.”

“Once upon a time there was a house to which we accessed by climbing up a few steps that led us into a porch and a front yard where flower pots blooming with lavender awakened our senses: a small garden that surrounds the house up until its northern side where we’ll find the terrace with its swimming pool as nowadays enchanted pools have rather little use,” say the designers. “Behind two generously sized sliding glass doors and at the very heart of this house’s ground floor there is a large living room filled with famous authors and their characters who look at us askance from every corner of the thirty vertical square meters of custom made solid wood bookcase recovered from the family’s previous home.”

The resemblance goes more than skin deep, with a woven wood-like structure that parallels the way in which nests are built in nature. ?The result is a semi-enclosed, seclusion-granting space to relax that nonetheless breathes (though, to do so, sacrifices potential rain protection).

Almost as neat as the organic design by Dedon itself are the suggested implementations. Some are a bit fanciful, but others seem realistic assuming you have access to a large and sturdy tree. Not that you necessarily have to hang it, but it clearly is much more successful as a suspended?structure.

Finally, the main frames come in a few colors including white and a more natural-looking brown, while the cushions are available in a variety of patterns, textures and materials including acrylic, leather and polyester … how these will weather the outdoors, though, is another question.

The Hydro Hammock can also be used as a liner for dug-out hot tubs in sand or snow. Dig a hole in the ground, line it with the Hydro Hammock, and fill it with water for a simple, portable hot tub.

If you’re flying, the Hydro Hammock and the heater can be checked with your luggage (as long as you aren’t trying to take along the LPG tanks). Currently the heater only comes in LPG-powered form, but electric and solar options will eventually be available. As of the time of publication, the Hydro Hammock is raising funds on Kickstarter and you can pre-order your own for a discounted price.

No matter how old you get, playing on a swing is probably the most fun you can have on a playground. Höwler + Yoon Architecture brought that fun to a 2.7 acre space in Boston by installing Swing Time, a group of 20 glowing hammocks built for grown-ups.

The swings are lit from within with LEDs that react to the swings’ movement. When the circle is still, it emits a warm, inviting white light. When a passenger boards and begins to swing, the light changes to a lovely lilac.

The interior accelerometer and microcontroller sense the level of activity to change the color of the swings. The interactive nature of this quality makes the swings seem fun and inviting, even for people who aren’t prone to playing in playgrounds.

Although the glowing swings are quite a lovely sight on their own, it’s when many of them are in motion that the installation really begins to shine. The glowing circles swaying gently or swinging wildly bring to mind the fun-filled days of youth when we could spend hours trying to make our feet reach the clouds by swinging ever higher.

Millions of people spend the entire workday in a seated position. Besides being not-so-great for your health, sitting all day can be uncomfortable as well. The Fuut Desk from Connect Design is a clever little contraption that looks and acts like a hammock for your feet.

The Fuut plays right into our natural desire to prop our feet up while we sit, and it offers adjustable lengths so you can hold your feet at different angles for working or for resting.

While we aren’t sure of the body proper body mechanics for keeping your spine and the rest of your body healthy while sitting, the Fuut looks a great deal more comfortable than the hard footstools most people prop their feet on while sitting at a desk.

The cotton, wood, and rope hammock attaches to the sides of your desk with small clips. The $30 (USD) Fuut comes in six different colors and rolls up into a tiny portable package when not in use.

We can spend exorbitant amounts of money on furniture and toys for our pets, but when it comes down to it, they tend to prefer cardboard boxes and baskets full of our dirty laundry. That’s what makes this flat pack dog hammock so brilliant. Just pop out the pieces, snap them together and wrap the whole thing in a t-shirt or sweater.

‘Wanmock’ was designed by Torafu Architects as part of the Architecture for Dogs project, a collection of dog furnishings created  by some of the world’s top designers and architects. Each individual item was designed for a specific breed of dog.

In this case, Torafu architects examined what is most comforting to a Jack Russell Terrier – the smell of its owner – to come up with their idea. The hammock is the ideal height for the dog’s owner to reach over and interact with his or her pet from a chair or stool.

The title, ‘wanmock,’ combines the word hammock with the word ‘wan,’ which is the Japanese onomatopoeic word for the bark of a dog.

“A breed-specific architectural structure designed by world-class Japanese firm Torafu Architects. In Japanese, a dog says, “wan,” the name “Wanmock” combines the woof sound with the piece’s hammock style. The Wanmock was specifically designed for a dog 10-15 inches tall at the shoulder and 14-18 pounds.
