British fashion house Burberry is bringing its signature camel trench coats and check-patterned garments to an unexpected place: the digital world of Minecraft. Launched in November, Burberry’s in-game Minecraft adventure is called Burberry: Freedom to Go Beyond, taking place in a version of London rendered in the game’s signature pixelated style. The adventure incorporates a 15-piece capsule collection Burberry developed for players of the popular survival game, but it’s also available in real life.

The 15 pieces include multiple Burberry logo t-shirts, a Minecraft logo jacquard scarf, a black cotton gabardine car coat, a Burberry logo baseball cap, a square cotton scarf, a hoodie, a bucket hat, jogging pants, and sweatshirts. The final item in the collection (and perhaps its most notable) is a version of Burberry’s classic Waterloo trench coat featuring a pixelated white Burberry x Minecraft logo on the back.

The collection’s laid-back loungewear vibe merges the distinctive styles of the two brands, with comfort being the main priority. Price tags are in the usual Burberry territory of $250 to $2,990. The Burberry x Minecraft collection can be purchased online and in select stores in New York, Shenzhen, London, Tokyo, Seoul, Taiwan, and Bangkok.

Each real, physical garment has a digital counterpart in the game. Avatars wearing the collection get the chance to complete a series of challenges within four realms, like navigating a maze covered in Burberry’s signature pattern. The game itself is downloadable for free as an add-on adventure for the Minecraft game.

The official Minecraft website explains that “The new, free DLC, Burberry: Freedom to Go Beyond, reflects Burberry and Minecraft’s appreciation of the wonder of nature. As the player, you venture into an alternate reality version of London taken over by a malevolent entity called the Nexus. Once a place blooming with foliage and gentle animals, this land has been drained of color and life. Its inhabitants have been scattered to the four realms of air, water, fire, and earth, and your quest is to restore the spirit of the wild by traveling to each realm, reviving its Nature Guardian, and freeing the animals trapped there.”

“On your adventure, you’ll encounter creative references to the Burberry brand’s universe – including an Equestrian Knight character, Thomas Burberry Monogram maze, and a range of members from the Burberry animal kingdom, each bestowed with mystical powers.”

The pairing of Burberry and Minecraft may seem a little strange, but we can probably expect a lot more mixing of traditionally fusty fashion brands and digital technologies in the near future. Balenciaga already designed skins for the game Fortnite, and Gucci recently released the Gucci: Good Game collection celebrating the world of gaming through rainbow-hued iridescent apparel and accessories.

Burberry’s Director for Channel Innovation Phillip Hennche says he knows the collaboration is a bit unexpected. But Burberry sees digital crossover as the way of the future and wanted to work with one of the largest, most beloved games, hence the Minecraft choice.

“Gaming is a super important channel for us in terms of how we engage our customer,” Hennche told Vogue Business. “We know that it’s a very important passion point for our target markets and consumers. We know that they are there, they are present, and they’re very active in that community.”

The post Burberry Debuts Digital Clothing Collection for Minecraft first appeared on Dornob.

Designer Adi Goodrich says she named her small-batch furniture company “Sing Thing” because the furniture “would dance if it could.” Hefty, playful, and surreal, the brand draws inspiration from Goodrich’s childhood, which she spent working alongside her father in his architectural restoration and antique business. She says it’s “inspired by and made for artists” in the spirit of Italian designer Enzo Mari, who sought to craft elevated designs for a wide variety of people using easily accessible materials like pre-milled pine boards and plywood.

Goodrich built each piece in her small 8-by-10 foot wood shop in Los Angeles using pre-cut 4’ x 8’ sheets of plywood (no easy feat in such a tight space). She wanted the furniture to be beautiful and interesting, but also affordable for creative types on a budget. To that end, each Sing Thing piece has a little bit of an edge but remains sturdy and practical. The debut collection includes two tables, a dining chair, floor lamp, pendant light, side table, mirror, reading chair, and vase produced in collaboration with ceramacist Becki Chernoff of bX Ceramics.

“Beaming with confidence and joy, Sing Thing’s debut collection ‘The Frunchroom’ is a heartfelt homage to the silhouettes, materials, and character of Adi Goodrich’s most treasured influences from the French L’Esprit Nouveau movement to Lina, the beloved northern Italian woman that taught Goodrich how to live. A tip of the hat to Chicago, the collection’s namesake is a playful reference to the south-side word, ‘frunchroom,’ loosely defined as the front room in someone’s home that houses all of the family’s best moments, most prized possessions, and happiest times.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Squiggly wooden stool from Adi Goodrich's Sing Thing furniture brand.
<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Simple rectangular dining table and chairs from Adi Goodrich's Sing Thing furniture brand.
Most of Goodrich’s career has been dedicated to large-scale set designs and interiors. She has a keen eye for layering different shapes to create imaginative compositions, and that talent shines through in her furniture designs. Her signature punches of color, circles, arches, and wavy lines intersect with the raw materiality of the wood, which she first fell in love with in her father’s wood shop and associated trips to lumber mills. She says “The Frunchroom” is “an offbeat celebration of anti-capitalist objects that are just as alive as you are.”

Prior to her foray into furniture, Goodrich built a reputation for attention-grabbing scenery as a spatial designer. She studied with the Chicago Imagists at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago and La Sorbonne in Paris, and she’s currently studying interior architecture at UCLA. Goodrich co-founded Los Angeles-based creative studio Sing-Sing with her partner Sean Pecknold, which created an oversized art installation at Instagram’s headquarters and the set design of the Fleet Foxes 2022 tour.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Colorful interiors designed by Adi Goodrich, complete with colorful pastel walls and quirky curving furniture.
If Goodrich’s reference to Enzo Mari piqued your interest, be sure to check out his famous 1974 book Autoprogettazione. The revolutionary Italian industrial designer and modernist artist combined arts and crafts techniques with the ideals of communism, with a strong personal philosophy that opposed the idea that good design is only for the wealthy.

The book offers instructions for building simple wooden furniture made of the simplest of materials. Mari distributed it for free, and although the book was later formally published, he donated the rights to reproduce the furniture in the book to German charity CUCULA, which supports African refugees.

For October’s Dutch Design Week, a pair of architecture firms banded together to prove that solar power can be just as beautiful as it is functional.

When she got the commission to build the central pavilion for northern Europe’s largest design event, Dutch architect Marjan van Aubel immediately looked for collaborators to help her highlight the power of the sun.

“Marjan van Aubel called us in May, asking: can you help? …Of course, it was short notice, so we had to move quickly,” explains Michiel Raaphorst, co-founder of V8 Architects. “Three days later, we met with Marjan and Miriam van der Lubbe, the Creative Head of DDW. While sketching, we came up with a surface that allows you to harvest solar energy but also forms a meaningful part of the environment.”

“We use technology to represent a natural phenomenon, and to do so, we harvest the energy from that natural phenomenon itself. So the solar pavilion represents the energy of the sun and cooperation,” Raaphorst adds. “All these parties worked together to realize this project because we all believe in Marjan van Aubel’s message: the time for a solar revolution is now.”

The two groups came up with a gazebo whose shape followed the slope of a cloth beach chair. Supported by four steel masts, the roof was fashioned from 380 wafer-thin glass solar panels in happy shades of red, orange, yellow, and blue. From above, it looked like a sun rising in a blue sky.

The collection of colorful photovoltaic tiles produced roughly 7.5 kilowatts of energy during peak performance hours, sending enough juice to an onsite battery to provide light and heat for all evening visitors. The intended effect was to allow guests to experience the sensation of sitting in the sun even in its absence.

The underside of the roof was left exposed for maximum technological transparency. “The structure contains about five thousand kilos of solar panels,” Raaphorst explains. “We deliberately left all the connections, wires, and discs visible so visitors can see how everything works. A practical view of the structure.”

The design teams also included two connecting staircases that led to a viewing porthole where visitors could have their picture taken via an app. “Up there, you suddenly find yourself in this other world: the solar field,” Raaphorst muses. Underneath the pavilion, a reflective circular bench and steel and wood seats provided places for observers to rest throughout the day.

V8 Architects and Marjan van Aubel Studio also pulled in a dozen other companies to help with parts and assembly. In keeping with the eco-friendly ethos, they borrowed most of the standard building and energy components, returning each part to its owners after the event for a circular resource design.

The architects were excited for the chance to show how earth-conscious technology like solar can and should be incorporated into everyday life. Says Raaphorst, “Currently, energy is only harvested in a techno-functional way. We explore how to integrate the sun’s energy into our daily lives so that we can love and embrace it.”

“Solar energy needs a new, more personal perspective that is part of our culture,” adds Marjan van Aubel. “This pavilion demonstrates that solar energy can be experienced and used in a new way.”

The post Colorful Solar Pavilion Brings Shade to Dutch Design Week first appeared on Dornob.

Few retailers nail holiday home decor quite like Target, where displays of adorable ornaments, stockings, garlands, and more will tempt you into covering every last square inch of your home in seasonal items. The superstore’s 2022 Holiday Home Collections include exciting new releases from house brands and collaborations like Hearth & Hand x Magnolia, Opalhouse x Jungalow, Threshold x Studio McGee, and Wondershop.

Below are some of our favorite new Target holiday decor items you won’t want to miss. Be sure to peruse the rest at Target’s Holiday Shop (preferably with a hot cocoa in hand).

Hearth & Hand x Magnolia

Joanna Gaines has shared her personal picks from the new Hearth & Hand x Magnolia holiday collection. They include everything from wintery plaid dog bandanas to mailboxes for letters to Santa, but one major standout is this Toy Apartment Building ($129.99), which can either be used as a dollhouse for kids or as a contemporary addition to your tabletop Christmas village. We also love the Fair Isle Stoneware Milk & Cookies Set, which can be enjoyed by everyone in the family after Santa’s done with it.

The Set of Five Boiled Wool Icon Ornaments ($25) brings some characters you might not expect to your holiday tableaus, like two mermaids and a camel. If you’re celebrating the holidays in a warm winter climate, how can you resist? We also love the Star-Shaped Sweater Knit Throw Pillow, which is so cozy you might start wondering how to keep it in rotation after the holidays are over.

Kitchens are the most popular room in the house, but they’re also one of the most limited in terms of customization. You can paint your walls and customize your cabinets, but most appliances only come in a limited range of muted shades like white, black, chrome, and stainless steel. Samsung aims to change that with its Bespoke series, and its latest collaboration makes vibrant, artistic refrigerators a lot more accessible to the average consumer. Exclusive to Lowe’s, Samsung’s Bespoke 4-Door French Door Refrigerator Panels now come in exciting new limited-edition designs by artists Alexa Meade, Amber Vittoria, and Domonique Brown.

Meade, who’s best known for painting directly onto the human body, chose to splash her panels with textural brushstrokes in a gorgeous shade of cobalt blue.

Vittoria, an artist and a poet whose pieces are often inspired by femininity and the female form, created a graphic work of art in which voluptuous curves cascade across the panels.

Illustrator and designer Brown wanted her panels to bring the relaxed feeling of being on vacation into the kitchen. Her colorful design is complete with a sunset, a rowboat, and turquoise water.

The panels can be mixed and matched with Samsung Bespoke’s portfolio of panel colors and finishes so you can truly design the fridge of your dreams. Pair Meade’s blue brushstrokes with dark blue and white for a more subdued effect, or contrast it with an unexpected pop of bright contrasting color. Vittoria’s design pulls right from Samsung’s available colors, so it’s easy to get a beautifully complementary effect. You can punch up Brown’s bright scene with clementine orange, yellow sunrise, or emerald green, or make it moodier with navy, charcoal, and morning blue.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Artist Alexa Meade paints a wall her signature shades of colbalt blue.
“Lowe’s is the No. 1 home appliance retailer, and our customers know they can trust us to deliver on quality and innovation.

It’s become increasingly common for the worlds of design and architecture to overlap with fashion and its ongoing quest to stay on the cutting edge of culture. In recent years, the industry’s biggest names have pushed themselves to imagine what it means for fashion to exist in a world far away from the typical runway.

This concept was recently brought to new life with the collaboration between Italian architect and designer Gaetano Pesce and the uber-luxe Italian fashion house Bottega Veneta during their SS23 collection showcase at this year’s Milan Fashion Week. Pesce and his team hand-crafted a whopping 400 technicolor chairs specifically for the event.

The chairs’ aesthetics are as unique as Faberge eggs, each one a rainbow-colored dream of swirling colors. While some of the seats evoke stoic marble and mountains of multicolored candy, others are decorated with hand-drawn designs depicting Bottega Veneta accessories — all one-of-a-kind objet d’art meant not only to be admired, but to be an integral part of the fashion show.

Entitled “Come Stai?,” the collection served as actual seating for the show’s attendees, themselves an active contrast to the swirling shades of the floor beneath. And like fashion itself, the chairs serve a multi-layered purpose. Meant to highlight the underlying theme of diversity in fashion, Pesce’s colorful handmade chairs make a powerful statement on mass production, and how devastating carbon-copy furniture reproductions can be to a piece’s individuality.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Musician Erykah Badu wears a bold fur outfit to the Bottega Veneta show, providing sharp contrast to Pesce's colorful chair designs.
As Pesce explained during an on-set conversation, “We are all originals, and this is one of the themes to my design.” He also emphasized the importance of flow and change in design as opposed to the stagnation that can result from commercial reproduction, adding, “as a designer, I make originals, not standardized series.”

“Form, function, and thought are necessary for design and art,” Pesce said before unveiling the first of the 400 “Come Stai?” chairs. The collection will go on to find new life in an exhibition at Design Miami 2022, and the individual chairs will eventually be made available for purchase.

The post Gaetano Pesce Handcrafts 400 Colorful Chairs for Bottega Veneta Fashion Show first appeared on Dornob.

It’s hard to picture exactly what life on Mars would look like for humans. The environmental conditions are harsh, to say the least. The planet is very cold and dry with an extremely thin atmosphere, and Earth-based life forms wouldn’t survive the intensity of its solar radiation. Human survival would take a lot of hard work, and we couldn’t exactly plunk down our existing architecture. So what would a house on Mars actually look like? A new project called Building a Martian House offers one answer, developed as a collaboration between artists, scientists, architects, engineers, and the public.

Created by artists Ella and Nicki, Hugh Broughton Architects, Professor Lucy Berthoud, Dr. Bob Myhill, PEARCE+, and public input, Mars House features an inflatable gold foil structure designed to sit on the surface of the red planet, and a subterranean level beneath it. The prototype is currently on display in the English city of Bristol along with a four-month public program of workshops, events, and research that will ultimately help determine what the interiors of the house look like. For now, it’s just a shell providing space for small research groups to collaborate on projects that help us envision what a future life on Mars could look like.

“The two-story 53-square-meter house is powered by solar panels and designed to be lightweight and withstand the environmental challenges that would be faced on Mars — such as average temperatures of -63 degree Centigrade and exposure to galactic and cosmic radiation,” says PEARCE+ Architects. “The upper level is designed to sit on the Martian landscape and is formed using a pressurized inflatable gold-coated foil, making it lightweight enough to be transported to Mars.”

The architects note that: “in Bristol the foil is filled with air so it can be reused, but on Mars it would be filled with Martian concrete made of regolith (soil) and the water found below the surface, to provide protection from galactic and solar radiation. The house has a glazed elevation, with views towards Bristol’s Princes Wharf standing in for the Martian landscape. Inside, a hydroponic living room is designed to surround occupants with plants to aid relaxation. This will feed into a circular waste water system linking the plants with the ablutions and kitchen water systems.”

The entirety of the structure can currently be seen above-ground in the Martian House’s Bristol location, so we can imagine what the underground portion would look like as well. This area would occupy lava tubes that naturally exist beneath the surface of Mars, protecting inhabitants from high levels of radiation. It contains an environmental control room that houses all life support systems for the house, two tiny bedroom pods, a shower, and a low-water “Martian loo.”

All those who interact with the project in person will be welcomed to contribute to the design of its interior components, which include everything from furniture and appliances all the way down to toothbrushes. This level of public participation turbo-charges creativity, introducing a wide range of ideas that might just help us figure out real-world solutions for our quest to populate the most promising planet in our solar system. Check out the schedule of events lasting throughout the rest of October here.

The post Building a Martian House: Inflatable Installation Explores the Possibility of Life in Space first appeared on Dornob.

If the prospect of summer’s inevitable end has you feeling down, the best thing to do is look ahead to autumn. A time of crisp, balmy temperatures, pumpkin picking, and of course, leaf peeping, the fall season is always full of creative inspiration — especially when it comes to refreshing your space for the cold weather waiting just around the bend.

Leading the pack with their latest offerings from Threshold designed with Studio McGee, Target Home is serving up some of the coolest, most affordable new arrivals of the season.

This time, the dynamic design duo is upping the ante for fall with a departure from the norm. Don’t expect your typical golden hues, vivid reds, and burnt oranges here. With designer Shea McGee leading the way, the brand has gone in a decidedly different direction, opting for a much needed dose of earth-toned neutrality.

While this might be out of step with the recent wave of maximalist trends, the collection’s chic yet casual style is both classic and timeless. Think muted creams and soft whites, dove grays and light browns, and an overall palette that makes for the perfect backdrop to fall’s often deeper, over-the-top colors.

Consisting of furniture, lighting, decor, and art, the collection is big on warmth and coziness — and with oh-so affordable price tags starting at $15, it’s easier then ever for the average person to turn their home into a stylish seasonal haven. Below are just a few of our faves from Target’s fall 2022 Threshold designed with Studio McGee line.

As part of a bold advertising stunt during Berlin’s July 7th through 9th Premium Fashion Week, German DIY brand Hornbach stuck a swimming pool in a giant pair of sneakers. Collaborating with German shoe store “43halb,” Hornbach’s “Sneaker Pool” was over eight feet tall, 16 feet wide, and weighed almost a ton. The massive kicks were modeled after the iconic Adidas ZX 10000s, with great attention given to replicating every detail. White carpeting mimicked the soft fabric of the shoe uppers, while wire mesh filled in for the sneakers’ webbed material. Stretches of blue tile made up the detailing at the back of the heel, and artificial grass rugs were laid under gray rubber sheets to complete the sides.

The project fit with the Home and Garden store’s mission to “encourage people to be as creative as possible, develop their own DIY projects, and set themselves no limits.” The project was especially impressive “because the shoe, including the pool, is made entirely of materials that are available from Hornbach,” the company explained in a press release.

“With the help of assembly instructions, anyone could build furniture at home,” it continued. “With the Sneaker Pool, Hornbach is taking a step into the sneaker scene.”

While that might seem like a strange direction for a hardware chain to take, off-the-wall advertising is the norm for Hornbach. “Sneakers and pool don’t go together thematically? We say: Of course it fits! Crazy projects are in our DNA! With the Hornbach Sneaker Pool, we show how far the current love of sneakers can go.”

Earlier this year, the DIY brand teamed up with production agency Heimat on a zany two-minute commercial featuring neglected yard plants that abandoned their native soil to take a raucous joy ride to Hornbach. On the way, they run over garbage cans, compete in streetcar races, and get ticketed by a police officer.

“There’s a bit of anarchy,” Heimat founder Guido Heffels says of the brand’s approach to advertising. “A bit of giving people a good feeling whenever they create, and whatever they work on.”

The company is no stranger to collabs either, having most recently worked with Chinese visual artist Ai Weiwei, “who developed a complete work of art from DIY materials to recreate at home.” Before that, they worked with “Danish designer Sigurd Larsen and Japanese architect Yo Shimada [to design] pieces of furniture purely from DIY materials.”

In addition to working with shoe store 43halb, the hardware brand also enlisted production company Neulant van Exel for help in assembling the enormous footwear fixture. The giant Sneaker Pool was unveiled at an exclusive launch event, garnering comments that ranged from “Sensational!” to “Kinda bizarre” to “Just amazing!” At least a few guests were allowed to try out the pool during the gala.

During the event, the company explained, “The Hornbach Sneaker Pool is a tongue-in-cheek reminder that the outdoor pool season is in full swing and that anything is possible with the wide pool range from Hornbach.”

A good fashion designer has a strong understanding of the ways in which textiles drape around the human body; how to mold them to various forms and fold them to accentuate their beauty. It’s no surprise then that a cross-disciplinary endeavor between one of the great contemporary fashion designers of our time and a Parisian interior design firm is so successful.

Stefano Pilati, former Yves Saint Laurent lead designer and founder of fashion brand Random Identities, teamed up with Pinto Design chair and co-artistic director Fahad Hariri to produce two striking pieces that use textiles to create voluminous forms that stand on their own as sculpture, but also cradle the body in ergonomic comfort.

The collaboration began with Pilati’s attempts to solve an interior design puzzle of his own. When he moved from Berlin to Sicily at the start of the pandemic in 2020, he purchased an 18th-century villa with proportions far too grand for the furniture he owned at the time.

“Everything looked tiny, the volumes overwhelmed any object to the point that I preferred nothing more than something that didn’t fit,” he says. “Then I put a carpet on the side of the sofa and after I put it on the chair. It was quite simple, but very effective. What I liked [was that] it was a material that was quite rigid, was that you could mold it, and everything became quite sculptural.”

Already a fan of Pilati from his days with Yves Saint Laurent, Hariri reached out through a mutual friend and visited Pilati’s Italian home. He found the experimental draping of the straw and water hyacinth rugs on sofas and rattan armchairs a revelation. The duo worked together to adapt the concept into a reproducible piece for Pinto Design, alongside a sofa drawn from Pilati’s origami-like way of folding the fabrics that wrap his own furniture.

The use of rugs and semi-rigid materials sculpturally transforms the basic shapes of a chair and sofa, maintaining their original functions while making them visually larger in selective ways. The sand-colored “Dune” sofa consists of rounded forms, with the fabric stretched tightly across the seat and back. The outward-tilting arms, however, have an extra bit of draping that gives them an interesting silhouette. Oversized at 350 x 135 x 96 cm, the sofa features a beechwood and solid oak base, high resilience foam padding, and coil springs. The upholstery is a cotton, linen, viscose, and silk blend called “Shanghai” from heritage French textile house Maison Pierre Frey.

The “Sculpture” armchair is molded on Pilati’s own chair using the art of lost-wax bronze casting, a technique used by sculptors like Auguste Rodin. The result is more rigid than it looks, and (crucially) durable. Pilati and Hariri envision the collection as multipurpose for either indoor or outdoor spaces. The chair will be produced in a run of 8 for 45,000 each, and the sofa will be produced in a run of 30 for 65,000. Both will be available exclusively through Pinto Design.

“I agreed to this project because I find industrial and artisanal design generally inspiring,” Pilati told WWD. “It is possible to find some affinities across the industrial aspect of fashion design where it becomes necessary to recall the physics, gravity, proportions, and tensions shared between elements and surfaces. Upholstery, as a craft, is something a fashion designer can understand with a certain familiarity, I believe.”

The post Fashion Designer Stefano Pilati Turns His Textile Expertise to Sculptural Furniture first appeared on Dornob.

Perhaps you’ve never thought of checking out Zara when shopping for home goods, but a new collaboration with a distinguished designer is about to change all that. The Spain-based fast fashion retailer teamed up with Belgian architect and designer Vincent Van Duysen to develop a sophisticated new ongoing collection reimagining his most iconic styles. The first series, unveiled on June 30th, focuses on elevated yet easy-going living room furniture incorporating Van Duysen’s signature soft and soothing minimalist aesthetic.

The new Zara Home x Vincent Van Duysen collection includes 19 products, including sofas, armchairs, desks, tables, consoles, lighting, ceramics, and textiles. It’s the first designer collaboration under the retailer’s new premium ZARAHOME+ line. Made of high-quality materials like solid French oak, leather, cotton, linen. and sanded stone from Galicia, Spain, the collection will be priced higher than usual for Zara, with sofas starting at $6,300 and rugs starting at $500.

“I am democratic, heart and soul,” Van Duysen says. “And I love the philosophy, the attitude, and the positioning of Zara in the world to make beautiful things accessible for any of us. I wanted to see what that would look like for my furniture.”

Marta Ortega, chair of Zara’s parent company Inditex, has long been a fan of Van Duysen’s work. When Ortega visited the architect’s Antwerp home in person, she immediately began to envision what a collaboration between Van Duysen and Zara could look like. He enthusiastically accepted her proposal and began looking back on his extensive portfolio to get an idea of how he could adapt his signature style for the company’s customers.

“I’ve spent 35 years building up my name, my career, my aesthetics, and my DNA, and I’m here to inspire, so that anybody in the world can buy beautifully crafted furniture at a decent price from me,” Van Duysen says. “I want my pieces to be in everyone’s home, no matter who they are and no matter at what scale.”

Van Duysen’s own homes, past and present, offered a lot of inspiration for this project — especially the very first one he designed in Belgium after returning from school in Milan. He wanted to recapture the classic simplicity of that space, producing pieces that were stripped down to their “purest forms” to eliminate frills and excess.

That doesn’t mean the pieces lack visual interest, of course. Standouts include elegant stools in natural wood and leather, a dreamy boucle-clad sofa destined to give the “cloud sofa” trend a run for its money, and hefty and solid-feeling oak and limestone tables with cross-shaped bases. The pieces are designed to fit into virtually any home, from a tiny urban apartment to a stately country manor, in terms of both style and scale.

The collection represents the first time Van Duysen’s work has been globally available. Though Zara doesn’t have any brick-and-mortar retail stores in the United States, the ZARAHOME+ Vincent Van Duysen living room collection is now available on Zara’s website, with a new dining collection set to launch in October. You can also find pieces in select Zara flagship locations throughout Europe.

The post Zara’s Home Collab with Vincent Van Duysen Gives High-End Style to the People first appeared on Dornob.

Luxury automaker Mercedes recently partnered with multihyphenate will.i.am to create a one-of-a-kind “art car” that will bring more STEAM education to inner city schools.

“I grew up in a ghetto. I grew up with hip hop. I watched legendary hip hop artists rap about Mercedes, so it was always a dream to own a Mercedes. For a lot of inner-city kids, owning a Mercedes is a symbol of progress and advancing out of struggle,” the artist said. “Now I’ve reached my goal and pushed even higher by re-imagining and creating my own vision of an AMG model.”

The charitable project called “The Flip” produced the unique “WILL.I.AMG” four-wheeler, a Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S base mashed up with the Mercedes-AMG SLS and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the celebrity’s two other favorite models. The Black Eyed Peas-founder enlisted the help of West Coast Customs to make the modifications, which included giving it a G-Wagen’s boxy front end, replacing the four doors with two massive suicide doors, and converting to monoblock wheels with a collaboration logo in the center.

Will.i.am left the original interior and engine alone. “I didn’t touch the engine, because AMG really does make the best engines,” he shared. “The story of the founders of AMG truly inspires me and it is energizing to collaborate with like-minded people who also seek continuous improvement.”

The new logo, dubbed “BEAR WITNESS,” is a bear head with the Mercedes three-pointed star as a mouth. It’s also the major design focus of a limited-edition apparel and accessories line available on the company website.

In addition to an initial unveiling at the Formula Grand Prix in Miami, the WILL.I.AMG was also highlighted at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, along with a premiere of its own six-part documentary made by the entrepreneurial musician himself.

The original plan for the custom one-off was to auction it off, with the hopes of being able to fund “between 50 and 100 robotics programs, with 10 to 20 kids in each” in impoverished communities. Mercedes offered to buy the car instead, allowing all the money to go “The Flip” program, one of the many STEAM educational initiatives the artist supports through his i.am/Angel Foundation. Over the past decade, the organization has raised millions of dollars for the inclusion of courses on robotics, computer coding, information systems, computer-aided design, and art in underserved neighborhoods like will.i.am’s home town of Boyle Heights in Los Angeles

Mercedes is placing the WILL.I.AMG in its brand museum in Stuttgart, Germany. “The Flip” is just one of several joint efforts between the automaker and the singer-songwriter-rapper-record producer over the past year.

“Since mid-2021, will.i.am has partnered with Mercedes-AMG on a series of creative projects including the GT 4-Door Hybrid campaign and AMG Uncovered, but this new direction is much more than a partnership; it is a meeting of creative minds,” the company explains on its website. “will.i.am doesn’t only contribute his genius to our content and campaigns but is partnering with Mercedes-AMG as a company, collaborating on many forward-thinking and innovative projects.”

The post Will.i.am and Mercedes Join Forces on AMG One-Off for Charity first appeared on Dornob.

Upholstered in pale pink velvet, it’s augmented by a faux zebra rug, a metallic Art Deco-style side table, and a throw pillow featuring a graphic red-lipped mouth.

The collection will be released direct to consumers through both the Novogratz website ShopTheNovogratz and other retailers, representing Hilton’s first foray into interior design. Hilton says she was inspired to collaborate with the Novogratz (as they’re collectively known) after seeing the high-end look of the hotels and homes they’re known for decorating.

“We are so looking forward to this collaboration with Paris Hilton, we are huge fans of hers in all the areas her brand represents,” said Cortney Novogratz. “We share female entrepreneurship, a love of Hollywood glamor that is elegant, fun, and classic with a touch of whimsy, which both Paris and I appreciate. We both love to be ‘extra’ in everything we do and have a passion for creating stylish interiors in our own lives. We are excited to share this collection with anyone who wants their home to be luxe and special, all at an accessible price point. We are also lucky to share the love of our loyal and devoted communities above all else, just as Paris does.”

They first fell in love with design after purchasing and extensively renovating a New York brownstone in the late 1990s, and have since redesigned many spaces around the world.

You may know her as a former boxing world champion, television personality, and the daughter of the legendary Muhammad Ali, but did you know Laila Ali also has her own line of home decor? At Home x Laila Ali is a collection of affordable and accessible pieces aiming to help turn your home into a sanctuary. An extension of Ali’s eponymous lifestyle brand, At Home x Laila Ali reflects Ali’s personal style, which is “comfortable, but refined” – a blend of modern and traditional with a feminine touch.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Laila Ali stands in a room filled with pieces from her new decor collaboration with At Home.
Ali says what she loves most about interior design is the ability to make a space “feel like a hug.” It’s neat and styled, but also relaxing, inviting you to kick back and build memories with family and friends. Her collection focuses on a palette of blues and neutrals pulled from her own wardrobe, with each item created with families and working moms in mind. That means there’s nothing too fussy (don’t you hate it when bedding is dry clean only?), and prices are as low as $4.99.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Calming abstract wall art featured in Laila Ali's cozy new decor collection.
“I’m all about encouraging people to be the greatest version of themselves by living their healthiest lifestyle,” said Ali. “Now more than ever, home is a sanctuary, and I collaborated with the At Home creative and merchant teams to help customers create a place to recharge and refresh. This line is modern and refined, yet still inviting and comfortable.”

The collection is launched through At Home, a home decor superstore chain with thousands of items at budget-friendly prices. Laila Ali not only designed the pieces herself, she collaborated with At Home’s trend and buying teams on small details like color, print, and pattern. Several of the pieces in the collection feature butterfly prints in reference to her father’s most famous quote, “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.”

When designer Soranyi Soliver launched her bright and colorful rug brand Sosomo in 2020, the focus was on exploring Dominican creativity through contemporary design, bright shapes, and eye-catching colors that highlighted her desire for “transmitting sensations.” Herself a Dominican Republic native, Soliver’s brand showcases the work of local craftsmen and evokes a combination of “experimentation, risk, creativity, fun, and a bit of madness,” effectively bringing her country’s creativity and style to a much larger audience.

Now, Soliver is introducing her vivid brand’s first collaborative collection, a partnership with the American Prize for Design laureate Karim Rashid. The small collection continues Sosomo’s penchant for integrating the craftsmanship and creativity of rug weaving with bold colors and flowing compositions. And Rashid’s creative eye also shines here. A perfect pairing with Sosomo’s existing aesthetic, “the amorphous, intertwining forms create a liquid-like, fluid pattern that speaks of softness, minimal yet sensual and warm for any interior,” he recently said when speaking of the upcoming collection.

And Rashid’s vision has certainly found the perfect palette, as Sosomo’s craftsmanship and handmade aesthetic soften his usual propensity for more sharply defined shapes with a digital edge. Here, Rashid’s curvy, geometric shapes and eye-poppingly vivid colors are given an added warmth when paired with the homey, richly-made Sosomo rugs.

Standouts series include two incredibly colorful creations that are like a Skittles ad come to life — candy-colored confections intricately overlapping and morphing into multi-dimensional shapes that are almost psychedelic in their construction. For example, the “Ikona,” itself described as a “blobular formed rug,” features a scalloped edge rimmed in dark blue and vivid purple, colors that perfectly complement the more abstract amorphous shapes at its center. The fluidity of these shapes gives them a sense of movement, an undulating quality whose design contains some of Rashid’s self-confessed favorite icons: “time, body, love, fluid, and blobism.”

A second example, dubbed “Likuid,” is, by contrast more ‘traditionally’ shaped, comprising a deceptively simple white, square creation full of Rashid’s go-to color faves. Bright, burnt orange, complex crimson swirls, and deep, lemony yellows are offset by light blue highlights and splashes of purple that add to the rug’s retro 1960s appeal. The rug’s texture also contributes to its acute sensory stimulus, featuring different pile heights (a detail found in many of Sosomo’s rugs), the overall impression is one of three-dimensional depth and fullness.

Shining a light on local craftsmanship and Dominican creativity through brightly-colored geometric designs, the artisanal rug brand is ready to reach a global audience with its new collaboration with Karim Rashid. A veritable treasure trove of psychedelic swirls undulating against the richly-weaved pile creates a lava-lamp like sensation of movement; further highlighting the brand’s already established oeuvre of colorful compositions, highly harmonious hues, and ingeniously inventive designs that aim to spread the message of Dominican craftsmanship and creativity to the world in a refreshingly retro way.

The post Soranyi Soler’s Collab with Karim Rashid is Full of Retro Rug Appeal first appeared on Dornob.

For the first time ever, craftspeople in Japan have brought together two unique creative traditions: the intricate patterns of indigenous Ainu artists from Hokkaido, and the ceramic potteries of Arita, a town on Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s main islands. “Ainu Meets Arita” is a collection of porcelain plates with Ainu designs and motifs pressed or painted onto their surfaces and glazed in shades of brown, green, and blue.

The Ainu village of about 120 people consists of many artists and artisans, who still practice ancient techniques like hand-carving traditional motifs into wooden plates. To translate the project to ceramic, the artisans carved wood blocks that press the patterns into the plates before they’re fired. The result is a beautiful twist on “Arita ware,” the name for porcelain produced in Arita, which has a history of ceramics dating back to the early 1600s, when porcelain stone was discovered in the area. This porcelain became a well-known luxury product within Japan and around the world, where it was often called “Imari.”

The project was initiated by Akan Ainu Consuln, an organization founded in a small Ainu settlement. The Ainu are the indigenous people of Japan, who now mostly live on the northernmost island of Hokkaido. “We have an accent culture, born from a lifestyle of harmony with nature,” they explain. “Among traditional Ainu culture lives a rich tradition of crafts, including wood carving, textiles, embroidery, and more featuring unique patterns and designs. Akan Ainu Consuln works to disseminate Ainu culture and protect Ainu intellectual property related to Ainu performance arts, the Ainu language, Ainu cooking, and traditional Ainu designs.”

The group works directly with artists and creators in Ainu to facilitate collaborations with other creative traditions of Japan. In this case, it’s two potteries in Arita called Kyuemon and Yamaheigama. They hope to draw attention to the Akanko Ainu Kotan village and its unique culture, bringing in tourism revenue that can help keep its traditions alive.

“Since the pandemic hit, tourism to Akanko Ainu Kotan has dropped dramatically, especially among foreign tourists who aren’t allowed in the country right now,” says Akan Ainu Consuln. “This project serves as a chance to bring in some much-needed revenue to our artists, as well as deliver a piece of Ankanko Ainu Kotan to people who can’t visit in person right now.”

The plates include designs by five Ainu artisans: Fukiko Goukon, Erika Katsuya, Masaki Saito, Kiyosho Hikawa, and Hideharu Taira. “I came up with my designs while hoping that Ainu culture will become better known throughout the world,” says Goukon. “I made designs that incorporate traditional lucky Japanese patterns in order to reflect the collaboration with Arita ware, while still staying true to classic Ainu patterns.”

A Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign raised over $25,000 to bring the project to life, offering backers the choice between each artist’s collections as rewards. Once the campaign is fulfilled, the creators hope to offer the plates to the wider public.
