Some married men don’t wear a wedding ring because they’re up to no good, but others skip the hardware because it can be dreadfully dangerous in everyday life. Certain jobs or hobbies can make the wedding ring a hazard, but putting it on and taking it back off is hard thanks to men’s large knuckles.

Designer and machinist Jeff McWhinney set out to create a safer wedding band that could easily be taken off and put back on – and it looks really, really cool. The Active Ring features a hinged opening mechanism that allows it to open with a simple motion and quickly clamp back into place.

The safety factor comes mostly from the fact that the Active Ring can achieve a closer fit than most other men’s wedding rings. Because they don’t have to be large enough to fit over the knuckle, McWhinney’s rings can fit flush with the finger, eliminating nasty catches and painful squeezes. It’s what the designer calls “the naked feel,” and it has the potential to make a lot of spouses stop nagging their husbands to wear their wedding bands.

Ties are already arguably throwbacks – vestigial fashion long divorced of function. Still, people labor to tie them daily to fit in, or hide their inability (or need for speed) with a secret clip.

This design by Josh Jakus takes another approach, celebrating simplicity by featuring the method of assembly and attachment as the prominent visual element – a zipper that runs straight up the middle.

And as long as it is focused on usefulness it might as well address comfort – the tie is made entirely from wonderfully warm and non-irritating merino wool felt. It is available in three sizes as well as both blue and grey to work with various figures and suit tones.

They say style works in cycles, so it was only a matter of time before one fashion designer or another drew inspiration from one of architecture’s modern greats, such as Charles-Édouard Jeanneret (aka Le Corbusier).

This Corneliani 2011 Fall & Winter line for men draws both directly and abstractly on this famous Swiss designer of days gone by, nearly borrowing from his wardrobe and definitely derived in part from his broader aesthetic sensibilities.

It is hard to say for sure whether he would be flattered or flabbergasted, but given his emphasis on timelessness in buildings and art, perhaps he would see the fit to his own theories and (international) style beyond the flashy runway show. The collection is subdued, in any case, eschewing gimmicks in favor of elegant and classic menswear that hints of its influences instead of shouting.
