Modern life can change in the blink of an eye, so we could all use a little more flexibility. Bold, textural, and evocative of nature, natural stone is never really out of style, but be on the lookout for interiors using it in a whole new way next year. Designers are using stone slabs with interesting colors and patterns as backsplashes, countertops, bathroom floors, and even ceilings.

Maybe you can’t afford that one-of-a-kind sculptural sofa on 1stDibs, but it’s not as much of a stretch to save up for an amazing table lamp or an original work of art. These kinds of small-scale luxuries can make a big impact in a space, especially if you make them a focal point. Minimalism was king for a long time before maximalism swung in like a wrecking ball to shake things up. Anyone that’s tired of tried-and-true decor styles should definitely take note of this playful new trend emerging as the fun, party-time alternative to the contemporary minimalism that feels all too common in spaces today. As designer Nicoló Bini says, it’s a bit like “ushering in the house of fun.”

As usual, celebs have been some of the first to get on board with the carnivalcore craze. Stars like Cara Delevingne have embraced the trend’s Alice in Wonderland appeal by decking out her Los Angeles home with circusy accoutrements like a costume room, tented poker room, ball pit, and, of course, trampolines. Decidedly maximalist and fantastically fun, some could see this as a classic case of celebrity overindulgence. However, there is something to this overreaching opulence that’s undeniably appealing. As Bini explains, the trend itself “has to do with nostalgia…bringing aspects of childhood, fantasy, innocence, and playfulness into our homes, which are now becoming real sanctuaries.”

It’s easy to see the appeal of turning one’s home into a livable, enjoyable space to spend time in. After a couple years of lockdowns and pandemic fatigue, transitions to remote work, and more time actually spent at home, who wouldn’t want a bit of pizazz and panache to make their space pop?

So how does one transform their home into a daring (but not clownish) version of a carnival without splurging on an actual midway or Delevingne-esque ball pits? There’s no better place to start than some carefully curated textures and colors — think less over-the-top and more playful. After all, you don’t need to throw out all your existing decor to make your home feel a little more fun. Work in a touch of drama with bold shapes, patterned prints, and anything else outside the norm that brings you joy.

While carnivalcore itself may seem like a niche trend destined only to exist as brightly-colored content on celebrity IG feeds, it’s always a good idea to bring a touch of whimsy into one’s home — because who wouldn’t benefit from bringing a bit of the extraordinary into their day-to-day routine? The results are the opposite of minimalist, including wallpaper, tablecloths, a fleece throw, placemats, notebooks, and more in two of Dazey’s custom prints. One print features bottles of Hidden Valley ranch dressing and slices of ranch-covered pepperoni pizza, all in shades of blue, green, and orange, while the other is just a tad more subtle with a repeating ranch bottle motif in green and blue tones.

You could ranch up your dining room with the placemats ($30 for a set of two), the coaster set ($20 for four), the 100-percent cotton tablecloth ($90), and the wallpaper ($75 for a two-by-eight-foot panel). Extend the theme to the bathroom with the ranch-themed shower curtain and bath mat set ($60). Set yourself up for sweet dreams of cool ranch flavor with the 100-percent cotton bed in a bag set (starting at $190 for a comforter, shams, and a throw pillow).

The sherpa blanket ($65), acrylic trays ($40), ranch art print ($30), notebook ($18), and pouch ($20) round out the collection. And lest you wonder whether anyone is a big enough fan of the pizza-and-ranch combo to buy the couch that serves as the centerpiece of the Hidden Valley Home Collection, we’ll let this tidbit of information speak for itself: it’s sold out. Bright yellow with a cute rounded back, it comes with matching ranch-bottle-shaped throw pillows.

Dani Dazey’s eye-popping interior decor has been a big hit on TikTok for a while now, but she got an even bigger boost after serving as the primary designer of Trixie Motel. Her process of custom-creating all of the decor for drag queen Trixie Mattel’s renovated Palm Springs resort was documented on the 2022 Discovery+ reality series Trixie Motel. Dazey certainly isn’t new to attention-grabbing designs, so it’s no surprise that Hidden Valley chose her to bring their concept to life.

Dazey told Today that she thought her style was perfect for the collaboration. “I could not believe it when Hidden Valley Ranch asked me to design a home collection for their brand because I’m such a huge fan,” she said, adding that the “bold flavor” of the dressing matches her design aesthetic. In this case, “maximal design meets maximum flavor.” Dazey drew from influences like Andy Warhol and his famous Campbell’s soup can when coming up with her graphic prints.

“We enlisted Dani Dazey for her colorful and bold designs,” says Deb Crandall, Hidden Valley Ranch’s Marketing Director. “In addition to the pieces Dani Dazey designed, Hidden Valley Ranch extended the home collection with even more items designed with even more ranch because when it comes to ranch, more is always better.”

The new textile and wall-covering collection from designer Catherine Martin is just the latest reminder of Presley’s continuing influence. Dubbed the “Royal Menagerie,” the collection was made for the luxe brand Mokum, itself a division of James Dunlop Textiles.

The set designer for the new movie Elvis, Martin’s vision is a sumptuous and gloriously maximalist exploration of plush, bold fabrics and eye-popping patterns — the height of 1970s opulence. The designs capture signature sights from Elvis’ world-famous Graceland home in Memphis and reimagine the lavish suite he occupied during his famed Las Vegas residency in 1969 at what was formerly the largest hotel/casino in the world, the International Hotel (now the Las Vegas Hilton).

Upon seeing the Royal Menagerie, one can almost imagine him lounging amidst its velvety landscapes, with or without his blue suede shoes. Dominated by bold, bright botanicals and immersive patterns that even Elvis himself wouldn’t sneer at, Martin’s vision is full of depth and delightfully 1970s grandeur that is as showy and complex as Presley was himself, both as a performer and as a mainstay of the American cultural consciousness.

Of course, the designs were not only inspired by Elvis’ palatial home and Las Vegas suite. They also pay tribute to the king’s penchant for audacious, fashion-forward prints that defined his on-stage persona as much as his smooth, silky voice and gyrating hips. The “Panthera” pattern in particular, with its leopard print amidst a deep gold backdrop, is a chic homage to Presley’s distinctive duds.

Meanwhile, Graceland looms large as its colorful, stained-glass peacock windows are playfully evoked by “Royal Peacock” — fabrics and wallpaper prints dominated by green jungle hues. And don’t forget the ever-present deep shag carpeting, another iconic mainstay at Graceland.

Deep hues offset the rich textures of the fabrics and textiles, but the star of the show is definitely the plush patterns, which are pure Presley. As Martin, “a child of the 70s,” herself recently noted, “I have an affinity for pattern.” Indeed, just one look at the over-the top pieces featured in this collection is enough to satisfy any Elvis fan’s wildest dreams.

This colorful Ho Chi Minh City apartment is the perfect example of how the maximalist madness is taking over homes IRL, not just in design mags and social media feeds. Dubbed the “Dreamscape” apartment and designed by the Saigon-based Red5Studio, the space is a colorful ode to space-age design that perfectly encapsulates the swervy-curvy, topsy-turvy, vividly playful vibes taking the design world by storm.

Home to a couple who makes their living in the art world, the Dreamscape Apartment was created to provide inspiration while also evoking a welcoming, homey environment. With a focus on curvy lines and soft edges as opposed to the hard, straight lines and sharp angles so commonly seen in minimalist decor, the home feels like a retro retreat — one bursting with skittle-worthy colors that pop against its white-walled palette.

The middle of the apartment is dominated by a burnt orange sofa that looks straight out of a (comfy) spaceship — but that’s not all. A swirly, partially enclosed blue-walled “cave” faces the space-age sofa and houses DJ equipment for entertaining guests. The room itself is open, airy, and full of light, highlighting the many pops of riotous color that draw the eye — a flower power rug here, a globe light fixture there, the perfect balance of kitsch and low-key elegance.

The open plan main room flows purposefully into a dining room that’s by far the most understated space in the apartment. Dominated by a clear resin table that catches the light and swirls with delicate ripples, the effect is subdued yet magical. You can even spot a touch of whimsy in the accompanying black and green chairs, and the matching green kitchen counter behind them.

The bedroom continues the space’s study in bright, shapely furnishings with a gold upholstered bed complete with zebra-patterned bedding and super groovy light fixtures.The curved doorway and mirrored room divider are straight out of the 1988 Geena Davis classic Earth Girls are Easy — think a “futuristic” 1950s design aesthetic seen though the lens of over-the-top 1980s glam.

Despite its excesses, the Dreamscape apartment is still quite livable. Its rainbow-hued grooviness is perfectly complemented by its soft edges and muted, swirling aesthetics. It’s nighttime neon and DJ cave make it the perfect place for a party. A scintillating blend of futuristic funk and retro vibes, this Ho Chi Minh City apartment is the epitome of multidimensional maximalism — and the height of “good vibes only” style.

Coastal Grandma

You just never know what’s going to blow up on TikTok next. Would you have thought, for instance, that teenagers would see Diane Keaton’s home in the 2003 movie Something’s Gotta Give as interior design inspiration? The trend is called “coastal grandma,” and it’s all about creating a beachy, relaxed yet clean and organized vibe that says “yes, we have money.” 26-year-old TikToker Lex Nicoleta claims to have coined the phrase, and her channel is loaded with both tips for achieving the aesthetic and surprising references ranging from Reese Witherspoon to Oprah.

Natural linen textiles and neutral tones form the backdrop for this style, which is accented with vaguely coastal themed accessories like throw pillows and wicker baskets. Amber lamps, fresh floral displays, and lightweight curtains softly billowing in the breeze complete the effect. Much of this trend actually draws from Hamptons-style decor, so be sure to check out our guide to the classic coastal style.

#Cluttercore

Hold onto your hairpin legs, because midcentury modern is over, according to Gen Z. Considering that it’s been the ultimate interior design style goal for several generations now, we shouldn’t be too surprised. Also out is the kind of aseptic minimalism that makes you feel like you’re in a hospital instead of a home. Instead, young trendsetters are embracing a kind of lived-in maximalism that conveys the fact that a real person occupies the space.

The point isn’t to fill your house with a bunch of junk you don’t need. It’s to surround yourself with things you love and use. The goal is a sort of curated mess, or a feast of eye candy that gives your guests something new to look at each time they visit. #Cluttercore has been a thing for a while now, and it’s not showing any signs of going away. But don’t fret, minimalists — the pendulum will undoubtedly swing back in your direction sooner or later.

The Cloud Couch

After it was spotted in the homes of Kendall Jenner and other celebrities, Restoration Hardware’s Cloud Sofa spurred a frenzy of TikTok lust. There’s just one problem: it retails at over $4,000 per section, and if you want the whole thing, it clocks in at $12,000. Designer Timothy Oulton envisioned it as the ultimate sofa with a corner, an armless section, and an ottoman, and central to its coziness is a set of oversized pillows to nestle into. The couch exudes both comfort and luxury, and it fits right into the Coastal Grandma aesthetic.

If the price is too high, you can find some considerably more affordable Cloud Couch duplicates (or “dupes,” as they’re known on TikTok). One of the best is the Ever Slipcovered Sofa by Leanne Ford, available at Crate + Barrel for $2,199.

DIY Paint Hacks

Paint is the ultimate way to transform a space: it’s cheap, anyone can pull it off, and it makes a massive impact. Designers like Danielle Nagel of Dani Dazey LA and duo @verygaypaint demonstrate how color and pattern can make even the most uninspiring spaces pop and express loads of personality. Nagel’s aesthetic also incorporates maximalism and 70s decor, two more popular TikTok trends.

One specific example is the painted fridge trend that’s currently inspiring TikTokers to turn their boring kitchen appliances into custom creations. At Home with Ashley demonstrates with a pastel striped theme, and Jess Maple gives hers a chalkboard paint makeover.

#PlantMom

Young millennials and Gen Z have taken older generations’ love for houseplants and turned it into a lifestyle. Just check out the hashtag #plantmom on TikTok to get an idea of what this means. There are two components to this trend: using large quantities of houseplants as decor, and caring for them like you would beloved pets. We’re not talking about tucking a plant in here or there for visual interest. The idea is to fill the space with enough greenery to almost feel like you’re outside.

The popularity of this trend exploded during the pandemic, when people were stuck indoors with little to do and lacking a connection to the natural world outside. On TikTok, the #plantmom hashtag will not only net inspiration for incorporating live plants into your interior decor, it’ll teach you how to meet their needs and diagnose problems like nutrient deficiencies. TikTokers Laneys First and Regan Kastner are great places to start for all the plant content you crave.

Cluttercore is the latest maximalist interior design trend to divide us into those who love explosions of color and pattern, and those who just want to crawl back into our clutter-free Scandinavian Modern caves.

What is Cluttercore?

Like most trends these days, cluttercore first became a thing on TikTok. This philosophy isn’t about making things look picture-perfect, or idealizing a particular lifestyle or period of time (unlike the similar-sounding cottagecore). It’s about embracing the realities of everyday messes and surrounding yourself with comforting items that make you feel happy and safe. The word “clutter” usually carries negative connotations, but cluttercore wants to subvert that by associating it with abundance instead of chaos (but you know what? It’s okay if there’s a little bit of chaos).

Making Messiness Fashionable

Look around your space right now. Do you see items like tchotchkes you picked up on your travels, framed photographs, houseplants, and piles of books? Then you’re already halfway there. All the items that minimalists would tell you to get rid of or hide are part of the cluttercore aesthetic, even if they aren’t magazine-ready. The point isn’t to cover every surface with junk to make your space feel cozy, lived-in, and personalized. Your stuff reveals who you are and what you’re into, after all, and every item is an opportunity to either remind yourself of a happy memory or tell a story about your life.

Of course, a picture is worth a thousand words. Just browse the #cluttercore hashtag on TikTok and Instagram to get an idea of what this style can look like. There’s no set or rules you have to follow or influencers you should mimic. You can integrate cluttercore into your style in a way that feels natural, either by adding a few more decorative items here and there or going wild and covering every surface like some of the cluttercore-happy TikTokkers who get the most views.

How to Embrace Personalized, Lived-in Spaces

If the stuff you already have feels boring and you want to start from scratch, here are some tips. Thrift stores, garage sales, and flea markets are your best friend. Look for bright colors, fun patterns that mix well together, unusual furniture, objects that appear handmade, and whatever else speaks to you the most. Most furniture can be repainted any color you want or reupholstered if you’re crafty. Customize that weird vintage lamp with a new shade. Pop the 80s painted landscape out of that ornate frame and replace it with art you love.

Plenty of people will find even the idea of cluttercore too stressful to ponder. The mere mention of dusty shelves full of kitschy figurines is enough to send them into apoplectic fits. But for others, it’s reassurance that the way we’ve been living and decorating our homes all along is just fine. You don’t have to buy expensive stuff or try to make your space look just like somebody else’s. You can just find your own happy version of cluttercore by curating a home environment that feels like an extension of yourself.

“The circumstances we have experienced recently have led us to live the home environment even more intensely and to devote to it the attention that the daily frenzy often made us lose,” Dolce and Gabbana told Vogue in a recent interview.

The Casa collection is exactly what you’d expect from the storied Italian design house: unapologetically maximalist. Everything from textiles to dishes are adorned with the swirling Mediterranean Blue pattern, the Sicilian-inspired Carretto motif, Leo leopard print, and Zebra print, all celebrating the beauty of Italian culture. “We wanted an explosion of colors, emotions, [and] scents,” the designers say. “Each theme embodies a different lifestyle.”

Storming into the typically minimalist, monochromatic world of contemporary interior design, Dolce & Gabbana bring their sensuous Italian flair to the Casa collection. Each piece is both fun and functional, exuding sunny optimism and a desire to be seen. The familiar D&G motifs make the furniture, crockery, glasses, dinnerware, and tablecloths feel like a natural extension of the brand and imbue traditional Italian artisanal crafts with a little bit of extra opulence. Dolce & Gabbana collaborated with Venetian heritage brands and artists like Murano glassmakers Barbini and Salviati and luxury textile company Tessitura Luigi Bevilacqua to bring the collection to life.

Consisting of over 300 pieces, the designer home collection was presented in an old Venetian church as a feast for the senses, alongside classic Italian cuisine like pasta and panettone.

“All Italy presents ancestral trades that must be preserved, and we are very proud to bring them to the world now in these type of products, a company that we had already been thinking about for several years,” says Domenico Dolce.

Dolce & Gabbana Casa fits right into the new Sicilian home decor trend. The design house’s Carretto motif, for instance, is drawn from the traditional designs that have been painted onto horse and donkey-drawn carts throughout Sicily for centuries. Sicilian interior design style incorporates these vibrant patterns, rustic materials, lush textures, and weathered accents to give the home a more relaxed, warm, and homey feel that’s rooted in the Southern Italian charm particular to the island of Sicily.

Though Casa might be Dolce & Gabbana’s first official line of their own home goods, it isn’t their first foray into home objects altogether. The design house previously collaborated with fellow Italian heritage brand Smeg to produce a line of kitchen appliances decked out both in their signature motifs and intricate illustrations of Sicily. First released in 2018, that series consisted of refrigerators, toasters, blenders, juicers, ovens, and more.

Casa Vicens is considered one of the very first buildings of the Art Nouveau movement, and its colorful facade has long drawn tourists and design aficionados to the neighborhood of Grácia. It’s also a beautiful example of Neo-Mudéjar (Moorish) architecture, one of the styles Gaudí experimented with throughout his career. Completed when he was 31 years old, Casa Vicens represents the first time Gaudí mixed Moorish influences with those of Spain and Catalan, a style he would hone and apply to many more buildings over the ensuing decades.

For 132 years, members of the public could only gaze upon Casa Vicens’ vividly detailed facade and imagine what the interiors looked like. But in 2014, the home sold to Andorran bank MoraBanc for an undisclosed sum, and in 2017, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was transformed into a museum, granting access to nearly all interior spaces. Casa Vicens general manager Emili Masferrer i Fons will serve as the Airbnb host for the special stay, sharing his “insights and secrets” from the recent restoration project during an exclusive tour of the house.

“We are excited to give guests the opportunity to experience this house as Gaudí designed it – as a nature oasis,” says Masferrer i Fons. “We are deeply committed to the preservation of Gaudí’s cultural heritage, and it will be a great pleasure to share the building’s secrets and rich history with whoever books.”

The museum will be closed to the public during the stay, so the guests will enjoy having Casa Vicens all to themselves. After their tour, they’ll be treated to a Gaudí-inspired Michelin star menu in the dining room, followed by a nightcap in the smoking room. To top it all off, they’ll be sleeping in the most lavish bedroom of the house, the private chambers of the Vicens family. In the morning, they’ll enjoy a full Mediterranean breakfast in the private city garden.

If you’re sad you missed this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, take heart: you can still visit Barcelona and see Casa Vicens in person, if only just for the day. The award-winning restoration of the house by Martínez Lapeña is certainly worth a long, slow tour taking in every last detail of Gaudí’s maximalist brilliance.
