But the individual workstations we sit at could change, too, and that’s not necessarily such a bad thing. It’s an opportunity to ditch the one-size-fits-all approach and customize these spaces to better suit our needs. Enter “Olli” by Pair, a workspace solution that’s designed to evolve with you.

Made to be as flexible as possible, the Olli system includes modular elements like desks, chairs, meeting tables, coat racks, benches, screens, peg boards, and storage along with “Olli,” a base module with built-in outlets. All of the “Sidekick” elements slot quickly and easily onto the Olli beam (and each other) in hundreds of different ways. Workers can be seated a full six feet away from each other, but still be close enough to chat. Screens slide out of the way and back in place with a flick of the wrist.

They also let you redesign your own workspace whenever you like. Want to add a plant, or some extra books? Block out an annoying bright overhead light? Get some privacy from that one guy who’s always staring at you? Just reconfigure or add new elements to the mix.

The elements themselves are sleek, contemporary, and colorful — a far cry from a lot of the furniture commonly found in offices. “Serif,” for instance, is a simple table for small meeting rooms and communal spaces that comes in a variety of powder coated finishes. “Toast” is a portable sound-dampening privacy screen on a metal tension stand. “EOR” is a lounge sofa with a high back. They’re all perfect for pandemic protocol, even if the designers didn’t necessarily intend them to be when they started.

Pair originally planned to launch their latest workplace collection at the industry’s annual furniture trade show, NeoCon, but was forced to cancel at the outset of the pandemic. All of the company’s employees had to work from home, and there was no room for anyone to experiment with staging the collection in their own spaces. To get around the problem — and show off what the collection can do — they created miniatures of every module, with each product designer building their own configurations at home. The results are pretty cute.

“Companies are still navigating what the future office will look like for them,” says Pair product designer Hillary. “The intent and reasoning for its need will definitely change. I’m confident the office will always hold a place in our future.”

“One of my favorite quotes is, ‘There is nothing wrong with change if it’s in the right direction’ and I am proud to say Olli answers to that,” says Pair product design engineer Samantha. “When we return to the workplace, it will inevitably be a different experience; with Olli’s versatility, organizations can virtually ‘future-proof’ their spaces.”

Tape on the floor is helpful for those willing to follow the rules, but it’s easily ignored. What if more physical barriers were erected instead? One idea from metal chain-link manufacturer Kriskadecor offers a translucent, high-style option that won’t make people feel like they’re trapped in a plastic bubble. Just as importantly, they’re attractive and customizable, adding to the look of the spaces they’re in rather than detracting from them.

Unlike plexiglass shields, Kriskadecor’s permeable metal mesh space dividers clearly aren’t going to prevent infectious airborne particles from traveling between two people. But what they can do is define certain areas of the room, making it very clear where people should sit or stand. The company put out a press release explaining why they think their products are a good choice for enforcing physical distancing for the foreseeable future.

They explain that “the ‘new normal’ will have a direct impact on the design sector due to the need to incorporate protection and physical distancing measures in public spaces such as bars, restaurants, hotels, offices, shops, etc. To adapt to these changes, Kriskadecor offers fully customized space dividers to manage the flow of people, signpost common spaces, or create different environments without the need to implement heavy structures.”

“Thanks to the versatility and lightness of the anodized aluminum links, the partitions integrate seamlessly into any project. The customer can choose the colors, shapes, and dimensions, as well as fixed or mobile systems that are easy to install. It is also possible to reproduce signage elements such as logos, icons, designs, and prints of all kinds.”

The links create dividers without “breaking the visual field,” so you can still see the whole room and light and air can flow freely. Hopefully, given that indoor spaces are still risky even when everyone remains six feet apart, any indoor spaces that use measures like these will also be carefully ventilated, and visitors will be required to wear face masks. Kriskadecor notes that the chain material can be washed and disinfected without affecting its finish, either by spraying it with a solution of alcohol and water or steaming it.

Of course, impermeable physical barriers can still be helpful for situations where people need to be closer to each other, like reception desks, bars, restaurants, and checkout counters. Many stores are starting to install “sneeze guards” to protect their employees, and some concepts like the “Plex’Eat” make it possible to dine indoors with reduced risk of infection from people sitting or standing nearby. A dome-shaped transparent shield that hangs from the ceiling, this design is bound to be a little more controversial than a chain link divider, but it’s also more effective.

Now, with the global coronavirus pandemic affecting construction, there’s a real need for creative, innovative ideas. One proposal uses robotic fabrication to create timber blocks that can be easily assembled to convert existing buildings into multi-functional spaces, or even multifamily housing.

Created by Design Computation Lab, a research laboratory at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, “Automated Living System (ALIS)” is a housing prototype built specifically in response to the global housing crisis. Its usage of robotic labor is merely coincidental, but fitting for these times, and it enables safe manufacturing that doesn’t put large groups of workers together in the same space.

Based on a single building block that can be prefabricated using CNC technology and assembled by two industrial robots, the modular system was used to create a prototype of a home office. But it could just as easily be used to create indoor play rooms, co-working spaces, art studios, pop-up cafés, and flexible rooms with the potential to serve several different purposes. Plus, the reversible connections on the blocks make the whole thing easy to quickly disassemble and put back together whenever you feel like making a change.

That potentially puts the power to pull off all kinds of interior renovations into the hands of renters and homeowners, more cheaply and easily than ever before. Imagine getting a kit of these to divide up a single open-plan apartment, for instance, or to create more separation for people who have to live together in the same space.

In the future, the same technology could potentially build entire houses, apartment buildings, and even cities.

A description of the system by the Building Centre UK explains that “inefficient housing, scarce and expensive land have been identified as core contributing factors to this crisis, and ALIS (an automated living system) aims to address these by proposing spaces that do not have fixed functions, contents, or ownership. Powered by an app, individuals can select the time and function (bedroom, office, café) of the spaces they need, 24/7. A system of robots changes the configuration of the walls and utilities, and personal items are stored in an automated storage system for whenever they are needed next. ALIS is not to be interpreted as a final solution to the housing crisis, but as a tool to question assumed ‘truths’ about how we live — the home, ownership, and social habits.”

“ALIS is the work of The Bartlett School of Architecture’s Design Computation Lab (DCL), which focuses on the development of automated architectural design and production technologies for the built environment. DCL’s work comments on a wide range of prescient issues, from the global housing crisis to the future of work and limitations of material resources, proposing that automation can bring about positive change for the future. DCL’s housing prototype ALIS will be installed in the Building Centre for February 2020 and used as a working space for debate and public engagement around the future of automation and housing.”

Most people who’ve shelled out that kind of money for a flashy car showcase it in a protective garage, where they obsessively clean and maintain it, perhaps taking it out for a spin on special occasions. It’s pretty surprising, then, (to say the least) to see a Zonda turned on its side, staked through the middle like an hors d’oeuvre on a toothpick, and used as a room divider in somebody’s apartment.

This highly unusual interior decor choice makes a little more sense when you learn that the Miami condo it’s in is owned by race car driver Pablo Pérez Companc, son of Argentina’s wealthiest individual. Companc purchased no fewer than two Paganis (a Zonda Revolution and a Huayra BC, each costing around $2 million) before approaching the automaker’s founder, Horacio Pagani, and asking if he could buy a performance engine to display as art in his new home.

Why stop at the engine, Pagani suggested, when you could use the entire car instead? But here’s the catch: it’s just a replica, albeit a full-sized one made of hand-woven carbon fiber. So maybe it can’t be taken off its pillar and raced around the streets of Miami, but Companc does already have a functional Zonda R for that, anyway.

“At first I thought it was a crazy idea, especially with the cost of buying such an expensive chassis,” Companc told The Drive. “Time passed by and (Pagani) called me again. He said, ‘Ok kid, that’s it, we’re going to make a replica of the R but you have to put it in your house.’ And that’s how it happened.”

“Obviously, it’s a completely bare chassis and it could never mate with an engine, as the carbon fiber wouldn’t have the density to withstand the torsion. So it’s strictly decoration.”

The highly unusual sculptural element was installed by contractors Finish My Condo alongside Artefacto Home Staging. It was no small effort hoisting the 800-pound car up from the bed of a truck with a crane and lifting it up over the racecar driver’s balcony and into his new home. Inside, it’s supported by a custom aluminum and carbon fiber stand.

Striking in its monochromatic, glossy shade of black, the sideways sports car separates Companc’s living room from his bedroom in the modern open-plan loft. The cost of the car alone is estimated to be around $1.5 million, while the entire apartment clocks in somewhere around the $19 million mark.

Spotted elsewhere in the apartment: a miniature Pagani model which, despite its diminutive proportions, costs about $10,000.

One of the trickiest aspects of interior design is the unpredictability of users and occupants – it is hard to know upfront how people will actually behave in the spaces we create.

This solution is aimed at addressing that issue, by making it possible to rearrange areas via strategically-positioned partitions that double as back rests. Such alterations can, of course, also be used to facilitate different daily-basis needs, like casual seating versus meeting setups. 

This group seating and space divider design, Diagonal, was created by o4i Design Studio along with a host of other creative office furniture concepts.

“Diagonal is an innovative combination of sofa and space divider for public indoor spaces. It was designed to meet the needs of modern offices and waiting areas demanding flexibility and privacy.”

“Diagonal consists of two basic elements: a padded seat and a screen at two optional heights that can be placed as desired in the diagonal grooves. Although there are only two elements, they can be combined in almost endless ways. By using as a single module or combining several of the elements, Diagonal becomes a relaxed setting for small meetings, a private corner for important phone calls or a stylish lobby landscape or waiting area.”

A similar room divider aesthetic is infused into the company’s PodMeeting meeting space, “a flexible product family offering semi-private seating as well as a place for ad hoc meetings for up to 4 persons.”

Check out their PodSofa & PodSeat, as well, which “offer peace and quiet for people working in noisy spaces but also suit one-on-one discussions and phone calls when you want to make sure others will not be disturbed. The ‘window’ is one of the key features that makes these compact units feel roomy and spacious; the opening is at a comfortable height serving as an extended armrest.”

A little tilt means an end to bookends with this lightweight and flexible modular storage solution, as gravity takes over and leans each volume against another.

Nitzan Cohen‘s design makes each module a stand-alone element, able to be configured as desired – including a choice between sleek black or a Pantone-like spectrum spanning a range of palettes.

But it goes beyond that as well: each book or binder is as flexible as the storage system – pull one out and you do not need to move your bookends back together to fill the void, as the next book(s) will naturally fall back into place. A neat system, in more ways than one.

“This slightly peculiar book shelf comes from the frustration that bookshelves almost always fail to do what its name suggest, and keep the books without the help of extra elements or bookends. My reaction to it was the naïve thought that if the bookends are anyways there, why not try and make a complete shelf out of them. The most common bookends being made of folded sheet steel dictated the material and the only thing left was solving some gravity issues…”

“This design is made with only two parts, which can be combined to form a shelf of any length or height. The structure assembles without tools and can always extend or change. A larger shelf makes also for a very graphic room divider; where the backsides of shelves are not usually attractive, we gave as much importance to back as to the front. The slanted elements are a direct result from the question I posed to the structure; it is a logical and pragmatic solution, resulting in a very distinct image which conveys its evident use.”

Big open spaces are great, until you find yourself short on storage and needing more shelves or bookcases. For those willing to make the trade off, systems like these can solve certain space issues – hopefully not at the expense of creating others.

The Cargosystem units from FEG are made to be inserted into open areas – they are not load-bearing and their doors slide specifically to make their footprint as minimal as possible.

While not structural, they are strong enough to hold your stuff and stand being pushed or pulled – aesthetically, they are something between a space divider, wall and bookcase, minimal enough to fit most styles of space.

A tilted keyboard platform and monitor-mounting surface is also a bit limiting – it does not exactly lend itself to various uses or comfortable long-term sitting or working, but perhaps that is not the point if these are made mainly to be arrayed in airport lounges or corporate hallways.

Bonus points, regardless, for there being an actual prototype showing it can be built and is stable despite its thin profile.

The dismal default for most fabrics is combination of opacity and patterns. For some purposes, such as bedsheets or fully light-blocking window shades, this makes sense … for many interior applications, however, something semi-transparent and altogether more dynamic can make a world of difference design-wise.

Création Baumann has been involved with the production of so many types of textile it would be impossible to begin to list them all here. A brief overview would also be difficult, so the focus here will be on simple and color-free designs that revolve around creative pattern, printing and cutting strategies.

In some cases, transparency is a by-product of the constituent materials used and the way they are assembled. In others, a layering of certain components or selective slicing of the finished textile creates a system of solids and voids through which patterns of light and shadow emerge.

For interior space dividers and room-from-room separators, these provide a point of visual engagement but also exist in tension between being solid and invisible, windows and doors. Over glass, they add an artistic element absent in a traditional curtain, roller blind, cover panel or adhesive textile. Some have acoustic properties, too.

“The topic of Création Baumann’s sound-reducing textile solutions is an integral aspect of interior design. Surfaces made of concrete, steel or glass, minimalism and contemporary loft architecture: the architectural style of modernity fascinates us with its impressive aesthetics. But acoustics, temperature and light control are also part of a functioning indoor atmosphere. In addition, all these levels can be shaped and controlled with textile modules to specifically align them to an integral feeling of well-being for the people living in those spaces.”

If there is a take-away message maybe it is this: do not underestimate the transformative power of light-weight, relatively-cheap and easy-to-deploy materials that can serve various functional and decorative needs simultaneously. Black, white and shades of gray can go a long way using daylight and shadows, solids and voids.

It can be tempting to take too literally the minimalism we see in catalogs, imagining our own homes with the stark (perhaps boring) modern pieces adorning our floors and walls and wonder if it will really work that way. These series of three shelving unit types is therefore presented first ‘in the raw’ and then in context – the different between the photographs is remarkable.

But first, the basic choices from the manufacturer (Former): empty or filled-in backs; white, wood or glass shelves; straight horizontals or added vertical supports; symmetrical or asymmetrical layouts; wall-hung or free-standing shelf systems. Some answers to those options:

Set with a mix of bare and complete backs, overlapping shelves and other unique choices, these custom installations show how quickly a bland wall furnishing can become a multi-functional room divider – a kind of partition wall as well as visual accent in an office-plus-living room and hall-plus-bedroom, respectively.

Other examples illustrate the ways these work along existing walls, taking advantage of flat and open spaces that would otherwise need to be populated with art or decor. Of course, we still don’t all live in lovely homes like these, but it is helpful to see photos of ‘shelving in action’ to determine what the real-life possibilities of such designs truly are.

Ever find yourself fascinated with the bone-crushing efficiency of library stack systems? Flip a switch and an entire isle disappears, while another appears to reveal a hidden series of volumes. A similar principle is at work here, but in a dynamic (and domestic) fashion.

Yuko Shibata is the Japanese designer behind this modest-but-effective interior design intervention. The use of two very simple non-structural wall elements turns a small apartment into a superb multi-functional set of living, working and sleeping areas.

“This is the interior design of a single home office.  This room was previously used as a residential space,” says the designer. “It was the owner’s intent that the floor plant could be changed to completely separate the living and office sections. This request was rendered impossible, due to the original structure being of box frame type reinforce concrete construction, with almost all walls acting as supporting building frames.”

“The addition of two bookshelves, each with a large door, allowed us to create a space with the ability to adapt from home to office or from office to home, while leaving the original floor plan intact.”

One floating partition wall effectively ‘cabs’ the built-in bookcases along the side of an office-and-living-room space. A bleached-wood finish sets it apart from the surrounding static white surfaces, calling it out as a fundamentally different kind of mobile divider.

Another fold-open wall creates a separation between a small reading-and-study-space and the larger zone of a surrounding bedroom. In this case, the clear visual difference (once opened) comes in the form of brightly-colored paint. Swinging open the movable portion of the wall not only reveals shelving and seating, but opens up the connection between sleeping and living spaces (also, conversely, allowing them to be divided as needed, too). When shut, the shelves blend like built-ins and keep the secret of the other space.

Dividing a space in a serious way can be a big design decision – especially in rooms that already are or feel somewhat small. These more decorative room dividers offer something in between open-plan extremes and divided-layout plans.

Titled ‘Swarm’ by industrial designers Mike & Maaike, the name reflects semi-organic way in which the individual sticks come together to create a space-dividing system that still allows light and views through just like one can naturally see through a hovering cluster of bees or other flock of flying creatures in the sky.

Layered wooden slats overlap to make these pieces more modern than ornamental, while a wide variety of colors and dynamic positioning keep them from being too boring. Each angle results in a different composition, and adding more than one screen can create a layered visual experience.

If you thought that see-through concrete was a cool material innovation, this even more refined-looking wooden counterpart may dazzle you even more. And with the core technology now fully developed, the sky is the limit – virtually any material can be made to let light pass through it.

Sandwiched between wooden slats, the vertical strips that help light move from one face to the other are visible as tall thin bars – but like vertical pixels, the effect of the composite image is readily apparent as our minds stitch the image back together. The resulting high-tech hybrid material can be deployed in everything from structural walls to horizontal surfaces or room dividers.

Similar cutting-edge, light-transmitting fiber-optics as those that allow lights and shadows to penetrate concrete (pre-cast or poured on site) are used by Luminoso to carry light from one side to the other – making considerations of density and thickness obsolete. Just imagine: a warm and dark wooden wall providing physical and psychological solidity and security – but that also lets light shine through it.

“What it is – A patented material made by embedding fiber optics between layers of solid wood with a specially formulated adhesive. The fiber optics transmit light through the panels, which allows static and moving images to be displayed through the wood.”

There is something almost creepy about the stealth with which these folding chairs convert into a flat and inconspicuous three-panel bamboo screen; decorative shoji-style space divider one moment – tall-back dining-room-worthy set of chairs the next.

A wooden frame serves as structural reinforcement for the lighter-weight panels, which in turn slide and slot between positions to make the transformation process smooth and simple. Designer Daniel Milchtein Peltsverger may yet have a few functionality issues to resolve but the idea seems sound (and the material is sustainable as well).

Of course, this would not be too difficult to make for the DIY-inclined – which is fortunate since (for now) this screen-and-chair combination is only a concept design.
